Q: Hard Drive short test unsuccessful on a an Inspiron 15 3000 Series

My laptop will not boot, the screen comes on and the dell logo is there and the lights flash around the like it's trying to boot and then it goes dark and that's it. When I check the setup it can find the hard drive, it lists it by the HDD. When I run diagnostics it fails with short test unsuccessful. I have reseated the hard drive and tried to reboot, but it is not working. I'd like to run chkdsk /r from the command console like I saw in one of the possible solutions, but I don't know how to get to the command console. I'm thinking I need a new hard drive but I would like to try everything to save this one first.

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

My Dell Labtop can't detect the internal Hard drive
I get this Error Msg:
Error Code 0141
Msg: Error Code 2000-0141
Msg: Hard Drive- No Drive Detected
The Given error code and message can be used by Dell
Technical Support to help Diagnose the Problem.
My Question is 2 things : first What other information would you need to better help me with this situation

2nd ~ If its not detecting my hard drive at all ...does that mean I have Bad cells ?

Hi,            The failure ID refers to Hard disk drive failure. If the unit is under warranty, then you can call the HP Support to get the Hard disk drive replaced if not you have to get the Hard disk drive replaced yourself and then reinstall the operating system using recovery disk.

i have dell inspiron n 5010 ,and after starting 2-3 minutes later it completely switch offs and it happens every time .i ran dianostics from boot menu and found dst short test hard drive fail error code 2000-0146 but after starting i can easily open hard drive before it automatically switch offs.Please Help

HP diagnostics returned error code 9lhvwc-5rg85u-mfh15f-60t903 during a hard drive short self test this evening. Prior to the test, the disk drive was working very slowly, as if it had trouble reading data. I am able to log in with windows in it's normal mode, but the drive performs poorly. Safe mode is better. I own an HP dv7-6175us with serial number 5ch134ijx7.

I suspect it's an issue with the header, because the disk drive was also clicking, and it was the click you hear when the accelerometer halts the hard drive. I suspect it's impact/shock damage. It was repeatedly clicking for about 5 time before I shut it down manually.

I have a HP Pavilion g7 that wouldn't boot up. I did the restart and press F2 to run the system checks and it came up that the hard drive short dst test failed.  Can the files still be retrieved fron the hard drive? If so, how do I do it? Any help would be appreciated, Thanks.

Any help would be appreciated, Thanks.  Yes, the files can most likely still be retrieved.  To do this, you would need to take the hard drive out of the notebook and connect it directly to a desktop computer or insert it into an external hard drive dock/cradle and browse to the files you need.  If you feel this is too difficult then you could take it to a local computer repair store and they'll be able to do this for you (for their fee). Once you've got the old drive out, you can have another put in and recover the operating system using the HP Recovery Media and it'll put the notebook back into the same condition as it came out of the box.

Suddenly my dell latitude d620 stopped working. Message when I boot the laptop is "Start DST Short Test - no hard drive detected - error 1000-0141".

I removed the hard drive (hitachigst travelstar) and placed another one from another laptop. The laptop worked well. I placed the 1st hard drive in the 2nd laptop. I got the same error as above.

So is something wrong with the hard drive???

When I shake it gently, I can hear a small part moving inside. This doesnt happen in the 2nd hard drive. So is something broken too?

Seems to be the case. But don't worry too much, hard disks are inexpensive and easily replaced.

When I restart a blue screen comes up saying "Do not turn of your machine loading windows. I have left it run for over 40 minutes and then turned off my computer. When I turn it back on it goes to home and works fine. Is this a problem with Windows or with my Dell startup? Do I need to reload Windows 10?

This may be a dumb question but I'll ask it anyway.  I love my 3000 3157 win the pentium quad core but I notice there is the same machine out with the faster i5 and/or i7.  As you know the cpu is not socketed on this motherboard so I am wondering if the faster i5 + motherboards keep the same general design so that it may be possible to upgrade the motherboard in this laptop at some point?  To mean anyhow upgrading to a motherboard with a faster non-socketed cpu would be more cost effective than a new machine.  The only thing that really bothers me at this moment is the lack of good stylus support and a second minicard slot for cellular network would be very desireable as well.

This isn't a practical upgrade -- there's no guarantee the higher-end models are even built by the same manufacturer, and while they make look similar externally, retrofitting a mainboard from a higher-end 7000 series into a 3000-series may not even be possible.  By the time you pay for a board/CPU AND replace the display assembly (it's the display that differentiates a true tablet notebook from one that just has a touchscreen like the 3000 series), you're likely to spend over $700 just in parts -- and wind up with a Frankenstein system that may or may not work properly.
There are true tablet systems in the 11-13" range -- these generally run at or over $1,000 new -- you just won't find those features on a $350 system such as your 3000 series, nor is it practical to upgrade the internal parts.

My Dell laptop will not turn back on. The piece that goes into the laptop from the plug seems loose. The light on the AC adapter is green,but the light on the laptop will not go on. I have trued the things in the above posts to see if they work but it will not turn on. This is extremely frustrating. I don't know if I should buy a new ac adapter or what. Any help is appreciated.

I was told I could add the Dell Active Stylus to the Inspiron computer, and it turns out I cannot.  Does anyone know if there is a brand out there that works when the Inspiron is in tablet mode?  I'm seriously disappointed!!

I have the same problem. I've tried three or four different styli, and none of them work. The only thing I can write with is my finger. I'd really appreciate hearing if anybody has found a stylus that works with the Inspiron 2-in-1 in tablet mode.

I just recently bought this laptop and the audio worked just fine then. I don't know why the audio isn't working anymore. I updated my audio drivers and checked if my audio was muted. Still ends up not working. Any answers?

How long ago did this start happening, was any changes made to the system just prior to when the system lost sound?
If you haven't tried already connect external speakers or a earphones and see if you get sound then, try to find out if this is a absolutely no sound issue, or simply that the integrated speakers aren't working.
Check the playback devices and make sure that the correct one is set to default, right click on the speaker icon on the taskbar and choose playback devices; Windows may show a number of different playback devices, look for Realtek High Definition Audio, is it set to default and if not what is? Right click Realtek and choose default click on the test, do you hear sound now? If not, test the other playback devices in the same way and see if you get sound back.
Do a search for Dell Audio and if listed select the Dell Audio Utility and run it. Check here to see if the speakers are muted, click the advanced tab and if nothing else seems to help choose to restore defaults.

My wife has an Inspiron 15 3000 Series laptop that has started to type 4 when the b key is struck, ' when the r key is struck and nothing when the s key is struck.  Is there a solution other than wiping the computer and reinstalling everything?

my Inspiron won't turn on when I press the power button the Dell logo comes up then the screen goes black. Then it starts to blink black and then a blue screen. The blue screen says "Windows Update Important updates are available. Go to PC settings to install them." In yellow letters at the bottom right of the screen. It never starts up.

I purchased an Inspiron 11 3147 with what appears to have a non K-Slot security slot. However I have been unable to find out what kind of slot it is. Along with the laptop I bought a Kensington security cable (Dell part number A5883764). The bar on the cable is too wide to fit into the slot on the notebook. The cable fits fine into my other devices with a k-slot. The only explanation I can come up with is that Dell just didn't make the slot big enough, which I also find hard to believe.
I opened a case with Dell, but the support tech was not able to find a compatible security cable and advised that I contact Kensington.
Attached is a picture showing the slot and cable.
Has anyone else had similar problems?

I recently received my Dell Inspiron 13 7000 and I had the same problem with my Kensington combination lock.
Researching information in the web, it looks like Dell changed the security slot to a shorter one (Noble security Wedge) for some Tablets, Ultrabooks (including Dell XPS 12) and Inspiron 14 (7437) - 7000. There is not information for Dell Inspiron 11 3000 or 13 7000 series but as I can see in some pictures the size of the slot is the same that the Inspiron 14 7000.
The new slot is using Noble security Wedge (Manufacturer Part# : TZ08 | Dell Part# : A6451164) and the link to buy it in Dell store this special security cable is:

Hello I just bought this Inspiron gaming laptop as a replacement for my old Studio XPS that out recently and one of the selling points was the ability to add a hard drive in the empty bay I threw my XPS s HDD into the slot but then the Inspiron wouldn t boot Removed it booted fine I assumed that this is because the HDD comes before the M SDD in the boot order and tried to fix that but to no avail With the HDD removed I set the BIOS to legacy boot but it appears that reading an M slot is beyond its capabilities because Windows just cycled quot choose a boot option quot over and over no matter which Hard Drive disk option I chose there were I assumed one would be the SDD I switched the BIOS back and everything s back to being fine There must be some Drive Inspiron Add to 15 7000 Series Hard way to do this but I m coming up empty on searches Does anyone have a solution

Hi everyone,
I have a Dell Inspiron 15 3000 series laptop, and while I was using it tonight it suddenly turned off.
I know it wasn't because of overheating, because the computer was cool to the touch right after it shut off.
All I had open was Skype, and I was watching a video in Windows Media Player.
The specs: 4th-gen i7 CPU, 8gb ram, 1TB HDD
Devices plugged in: Samsung 21.5" monitor via HDMI, Logitech G430 via USB, Logitech G302 via USB, Acer keyboard via USB, Blue Snowball via USB.
The laptop was on AC power and was fully charged when this occurred.

What could've happened?

Could have still been an overheating problem. The CPU has autosense heat protection and will shut it down and may do that even if the case is not hot to the touch.

I see a lot of USB ports being used, is this your usual setup? If you are watching a video, the USB mic did not need plugged in.

Second time I install all from scratch and after installing all I get this bsod. Im in safe mode. Uninstalled drivers but the same happens. Really puzzled since I dont know whats wrong. Dell diagnostics are ok too.

Hello guys!i-ve bought this model of pc yesterday here in China (isn-t a fake pc because i've bought directly to the dell shop). The problem is that all USB port doesn't work and also the integrated webcam.I've tried a lot of solutions, also enter in the administration panel where you can check all elements in the pc.

When I move my laptop with out connecting the adapter it get shutdown. If adapter is connected it works fine. Is there any problem with the mother board? How can it be solved?

So when the computer is on battery mode, it shuts down? Have you tried checking your BIOS if the battery is performing well? Please also try running the on board diagnostics of the computer. Hello,

We bought the Inspiron 11 3000 series 2-in-1 with the Intel pentium processor and Windows 10 back in August 2015. We've recently been having problems with the audio, it goes from quiet to loud and then loud to quiet without touching the volume. It almost sounds like it's skipping, but the volume just goes so low you can barely hear it, then goes so loud you almost have to turn it down.
When the laptop is plugged in the problem seems to vanish and the volume is constant.

Does anyone know what might be the problem? Software, hardware? I appreciate any replies.

Between all the bugs in this computer's OS and Widows 10 this has been the worst computer I've ever owned. What happened to the old Dell? They used to make a reliable product with great customer service.

Just purchased a new Inspiron 15 3000 series laptop and booted it up for the first time today.  I am having difficulty figuring out the touchpad, specifically the scrolling.  It worked initially during set up, but then once I had that done, I can no longer get it to scroll - at all.  I have looked through all settings, and it seems like everything is right.  The drivers are up to date as well.
What can I do?

Good day i have a DELL INSPIRON 15 3000 SERIES.. I started using it from FEBRUARY 2016... I have no problem using it until this June 12 2016.. It just wont turn on... When the adapter is plugged the charging LED opens but later the light will disappear.. I already tried the 30 seconds power press without the battery and the adapter to release the stock power.. But it still doesn't work,,, I'm confused because why do the CHARGING LIGHT TURNED ON WHEN I PUT THE BATTERY ON AND PUT THE CHARGER IN..?? any help please or suggestions... please and thanks

I have purchased Inspiron AMD 3000 series from Amazon. From beginning battery drain out within 2 hours after full charge.

If you're actively using the system for that period of time (i.e., continuously working and/or viewing videos, etc.) that's probably all you'll ever see from a very low-end system with a CPU that's not particuarly power efficient.
If you lower the screen brightness and slow the CPU, you may be able to eke out another hour -- but 2-3 hours from a low-end system like this is about all you can reasonably expect.

This started happening occasionally. Now it happens more frequently. If I leave my machine on overnight (or for an extended period of time) It will lose internet connection. It keeps connection with my Router (Charter Cable, Arris Model SBG 6580) and network, but has only limited connection. When I restart my machine, the connection returns to normal. My roommate is on the same network connection and he has no problems. My iPhone is also connected and it has no problems. I have a very infrequent router problem, but I know when this happens because everything goes down. I restart the router and all is well.
Do I need some kind of software or firmware update?
Do I have something running around inside my machine? My Anti Virus doesn't find anything nor my Anti Malware.
Any help is appreciated.

Vertical, mostly green lines, cover the lower half of the screen, and flickers in brightness and sometimes different shades of pink. Horizontally, the top half of the screen also appears in the bottom half of the screen. Have gone through all the Dell recommended diagnostics except for the external monitor because I don't have access to one.

My name is Kerellos, and I've been having a lot of issues with my built in keyboard.  A lot of the keys stop working at random times (a, q, z, 1, left Ctrl key, ` and Esc key) .  I have tried to reset my computer but it doesn't help.  I end up having to use the touch keyboard, and I don't like to. This is getting very frustrating. Please help.

Hi there,
Bought my LP Inspiron 11 3000 Series earlier this year and was really pleased with it because it was fast and light.
Then DELL sent out a BIOS upgrade which has turn my lovely speedy laptop into a dead donkey in that it no longer "sleeps" - it reboots from scratch every time, the time it takes to boot is painfully slow when before it was really fast, and it takes *ages* (sometimes feels like years) to open applications such as Excel, Word, or Chrome.
What has DELL done to my laptop?  Please, PLEASE, is there a fix?

I have attached several different USB keyboards (including Dell SK-8135) to my laptop to use the number pad in my accounting soft ware. None of the number pads work. I have checked that these keyboards work  when attached to my desktop, they do. I have checked to insure the num lock is on. It is. I tried searching for a driver specific to the Sk-8135 keyboard. No Luck. Any help is Greatly Appreciated.

I just bought the above laptop. It came with ubuntu preinstalled. I did a clean install of windows 8.1 and downloaded all the drivers from the Dell support site. All drivers installed easily except the wireless+bluetooth driver. It keeps giving in error:"Activate bluetooth using wireless switch". I don't HAVE A wireless switch on my laptop!!! I tried restarting. On some googling, I installed quickset and toggled airplane mode with it. It works, but the setup is still stuck at that. Please help me!

Does it come up with any error messages ?
Kindly try the following steps :
a.Boot using Windows 8 Installation disk and perform startup repair.
b. Insert the disk into DVD drive and restart the computer.
c. Press F12 key (typically this is F12, but it can differ between computer manufacturers) and choose the drive that you inserted the installation media into.
d. Once the Windows Setup window appears click Next.
e. Click on Repair your computer.
f. Click on Troubleshoot and then select Advanced Options.
g. Click on Automatic repair.
h. Follow the on-screen instructions and finish the repair.

I installed a new router at home. All devices are working ok but the Dell Inspiron can't connect to the wifi.
I try updating the drivers using the following installer:
Network_Driver_HP06Y_WN_10.0.0.276_A00.EXE
But after restart the notebook it still can't connect to wifi. Windows doesn't help with the error message:
This version of windows is really poor. I feel very frustrated with windows, because it doesn't say anything about the issue in order to guide / help me to find a solution. I can't believe how dark is it.
The current driver version installed is 10.0.0.276:
Windows event viewer also doesn't show any error that could help to solve the problem.
Searching Internet didn't find anything useful.

Since I did not get an answer here, I went ahead and ordered the machine anyway, and took a chance. It does NOT have either feature in it.

It passed my other tests, so I'm keeping it and the next computer I get will probably have both of those features, but for this one, I guess I'll live without, since the network isn't finished to the point where I could actually use it anyway yet.

Just sharing...My keyboard stopped working one day. It sometimes worked when I started the computer but stopped working after that. I followed instructions, and updated the drivers to no avail.On youtube I saw a few video regarding problems with windows 10 and the keyboard not working. I had installed windows 10 about a month before my keyboard stopped working. The video states you must go to the settings, ease of access, and keyboard.  Within keyboard you just change the various switches as instructed. I restarted my computer and to my amazement it worked. I'm just putting it out there should anyone be facing the same problem.

It appears you have remnants of a previous McAfee install(besides SiteAdvisor) on your machine.

Please download the McAfee Removal Tool MCPR.exe and Save it to your Desktop.Close all programs and double-click MCPR.exe then click Run
Follow the on-screen instructions.
When finished, it will say 'CLEANUP SUCCESSFUL'.
Click 'Yes' to restart your computer.
Then delete MCPR.exe from your desktop.

Hello everyone, About a month and a half ago, I've bought the mentioned laptop. During the first week of using it, I've noticed that somehing is wrong, so I ran some tests in Lenovo Solution Center. HDD had faild it, so I've contacted your service immidiately, and they replaced it with a new HDD.  The laptop was in service for like 27 days, and when I got it, I had a problem booting up a system... When it finally started to work I couldn't download and install drivers normally, it stared to freeze, aborted the actions etc. Like the last time, I managed to download Lenovo Soultion Center and ran the tests, again. The result of the test was Warning for SMART Short Self Test and SMART Drive Self test. Can you somehow advise me what to do? Thanks in advance.  Result code: WHD01V000-HL0Y9G

It would be best to contact tech support for the recommendation and decode of WHD01V000-HL0Y9G , 
and since you are experiencing freezing at this moment , back up your files as needed . 
 
You may also run counter scan using similar diagnostic software as this to check further and verify the detected imminent drive read failure . SMART test are pre detection software to alert users to back up their files if the integrity test falls its set standard each different from different harddrive manufacturers ( example seagate , Western Digital etc.) . 
 
LSC may be a bit sensitive to its SMART detection but then if you are having freezing issue , most likely it is doing its job as expected.

Hi,

I recently ran a scheduled diagnostic test of my PC with the manufacturer's diagnostic software. I received two error messages and the advice to promptly replace my hard drive. The first message was Failed (Error code: WHD20-1VR) and the second was Failed (Error code: WHD16-T57). The apply to Targeted Read test and Smart Short Self Test respectively.

So I ran Chkdsk for the C: drive and received no error messages.

Which is correct and what should I do about it? The error message won't go away on the software.

CHKDSK is a very basic check that mostly checks file system and can be set to scan for bad sectors. The manufacturer's diagnostics actually check the physical drive to make sure its operating within the designed parameters and is more thorough.

You should replace the drive.

I ran the hardware test this morning and everything passed but the SMART short self test. It failed and gave me this code. WHD01V00G-BK7W0J It says to send to Lenovo but I don't know where. The SMART short self-test that failed may have detected some certain sectors on the drive that are bad and predicted an imminent HDD failure so I would recommend you contact the lenovo helpdesk and report your findings as you likely need to send the unit for service.

The SMART Self-Test Unit means that the diagnostic utility failed to read some certain sectors on the drive and predicted an imminent HDD failure.
 
If with the test you did you are getting a SMART test or a smart short test failure then I believe you need to back up your data and be ready to replace the drive.
 
I recommend you contact Lenovo support and report your findings as you likely need to send the unit for service.

Best that you back up all your files are the harddrive would soon fail.
SMART test are harddrive integrity test that pre warns before it crashes and that you may need to change the harddrive very soon.  You may need to create your installer media too.

Had this laptop for about 6 years, had a few issues in the past, but nothing major like this. After, I ran a system dianostic, the result shown that the Hard drive short DST failed. Not totally sure how to do a recovery, I do have the Recovery Discs, so I searched up how to run the discs; turned on the system- press f11-  window loading files- window starting- then it just stuck on a window blue screen with nothing but the cursor. Can I even use the Recovery Discs? I want to replace the old HDD with a new SSD, but I'm not sure if I have to install a new OS or can I recover the old hard drive OS and transfer to the SSD?

A:Hard Drive failure (Hard Drive Short DST Check: Failed)

DST:Fail means  the hard drive has failed and will need to be replaced. If you are still in warranty HP will send a replacement. If not a retail laptop SATA hard drive can be used. Just be sure to get one of at least equal capacity as the original in order to use Recovery Discs. It can be larger, but not smaller capacity.For instance if you have a 500GB hdd you could use a 750GB hdd but not a 320GB hdd.

Running XP pro Sp2, IE 7 & Mozilla 3.6 8 . Using Mozilla, facebook, farmvile game. Mozilla has the file plugin-container.exe, which taskman shows hogging resources. Out of the blue my pc started the beeping randomly while using mozilla. When I close, no beep since. All other apps are standard, usual and up to date. No new hardware or software. Recent past & some random scroll bar moving by it's self, have not found a fix. That happens on both browsers. Should I remove or disable the plugin-container.exe, & would it affect mozilla & farmville? I read where it suppose to stop the browser from crashing, but it doesn't. Also have virtually the same setup up on another pc routed with this one. Please give me some insight!

Hey all I have quite the dilema Yesterday i uplugged my optical drive ad because my i soo quite i forgot it was on, wheni plugged it back in it spark which scared sh*t outa me and i quickly popped the cable in. Subseqeutly the hard drive won't spin up in the case or in my exteral case. Is it just simply lost? or could i replace the electronics from another drive into it?

Curretly usuing Ubuntu live cd quite pleased I have to say.

**EDIT** what about removing the platters and putting then into a different hard drive? too hard?

Hi I just got a Dell Dimension and No Dimension Drive Slot Hard 2nd for 3000 in when I decided I wanted to put my nd GB hard drive in it for storage I realized there s no bay slot for the hard drive to No Slot for 2nd Hard Drive in Dimension 3000 go in The original GB hard drive is mounted in a bracket enclosure vertically against No Slot for 2nd Hard Drive in Dimension 3000 the front of the case Here is a picture of the inside of a Dell Dimension and it looks exactly like the inside of mine http www saisin to sokumen jpg You can t see it really well but there s a molex connector going to the hard drive there at the front of the case What am I going do I really need that extra HD for storing files The way the bracket is designed it looks like I may be able to screw another bracket against the first one with another hard drive in it Here are my questions Does anyone know where to get another mounting bracket like the one already in my Dell Dimension for another hard drive Can I get some sort of enclosure that will allow me to fit the HD into one of the optical drive bays I ve heard of USB enclosures for IDE hard drives Are they fast I don t want to have a slow link with my system Does anyone have any other ideas I don t want to go and get another case I don t even know if the components could easily be transferred to another case with all the USB ports in the front and back I d appreciate any help you could give me nbsp

Kyle, welcome to the forum. This error message is telling you that your hard drive has failed.  Your only option is to replace it.  You can test it further using the SMART test from the BIOS.  When you replace it you should buy one the same size or larger.  If you didn't backup your personal data, you will not be able to retreive it.  You should begin doing this immediately after you replace the drive. Please click the Thumbs up + button if I have helped you and click Accept as Solution if your problem is solved.

If you want a partition on that drive that keeps the transfer rate above ~100MB/sec, create only a 400GB partition (that's ~40% used, see your graph).

Did a system quick test and it told me hard drive short dst check: FAILED and also gave me a failure id. I don't know what to do

My notebook wont start and stack at black screen with loading circle in the bottom. Help i tried the diagnostic test and im having failed short dst hard drive. ( i dont even know what is that) i need help!!!

I Inspiron installation in 15 3251 SSD of Unsuccessful installed a mm Blast Patriot GB SSD in a Dell Inspiron laptop I backed up the old GB HDD onto an external hard drive using the free version of Macrium nbsp Upon trying to boot up I saw - quot Checking Media -Failed quot very close to those words I checked the Unsuccessful installation of SSD in Inspiron 15 3251 Bios which told me that the new SSD was not detected I re-checked the seating of the SSD into its socket and it felt snug The old HDD was also mm and had a brace that I used for the new SSD nbsp I assume that the new SSD was blank and had no formatting could be incorrect on that If so would the failure be that the new SSD was blank I e would the bios theoretically detect the SSD if it had an OS or any formatting done to it nbsp I m not sure if this SSD is compatible or not I also wonder if the SATA control circuitry on the motherboard have a problem with the new SSD or it might not be working at all I really don t know if the old HDD is bad or not I m just assuming that it failed When whatever started to fail my computer got hung up on the Internet after viewing only a couple of pages That happened once again and the third time I tried using it there was media failure Macrium has an option for restoring to a new media if you upgrage to the premium service nbsp This problem is turning into an opportunity for learning an awful lot nbsp Thank you for any insights anyone can offer No matter what you know there is always someone who knows more nbsp

hi all,
I am having a weird problem. The BIOS randomly will not recognize the hard drive. I put it in a different computer and it works, so there is nothing wrong with the drive. I also put another hard drive into the dell, and it sees that one no problem. All of the jumpers are correct for the other drives in the dell. I am stumped. as a random note, never in my life have i seen a dell that works with no problems. =P

A:Dell dimension 3000 will not recognize hard drive

On the Dimension 3000, the drives have to be set to Cable Select (CS) Though obviously if it works at random, that is probably not the problem. On a Dell that age it could be a dodgey cable, or if this is the original drive that came with the computer it could be a drive that is on its way to the big Cyber Dump in the sky. I have a 3000 that I recently had to replace the Factory original drive in because it had problems booting to windows, then the drive eventually just died.

Hello there!My computer recently started rebooting (BSOD) nonstop after turning it on, and it won't even go into Safe Mode. After running a system quick check, I received a message stating Hard Drive Short DST: Failed.With this message, I assume I need to replace my hard drive. I'm not sure where the best place to look for a new laptop hard drive is and how to find one on the HP store. Recovering potentially lost data is also a concern. What's the best way to go about replacing the drive and attempting to recover what was on it?

 You can use any manufacturer's hard drive. HP uses Toshiba, Seagate,etc in their laptops-they do not make their own. Western Digital is a popular replacement. Best Buy, Staples even Wal Mart carries hard drives. Getting black screen error boot device not found/no OS daily.  Been trying to do a backup which then results in this error. Ran UEFI quick test which gave failure ID: GK763H-6KA88D-MFPX0K-60S703 The quick system test passed but gave SOFTWARE ERROR for the HD Short DST check. Please advise.

Dear HP Team, My Laptop is showing a problem. It's display is getting unresponsive suddenly while working and then the display gets black.. I did all the diagnostics in HP hardware diagnostics. Among all of the diagnostics, only HARD DRIVE SHORT DST CHECK and HARD DRIVE LONG DST CHECK came as  failures.Hard drive DIAGNOSTICS SHOWS:Result: FAILEDFailure ID:QC42TL-7Q388U-XD7WMF-61AM03 Product Number:M1W23UA#ABASO, What should I do now? Your hard drive must be replaced. Post back if you want specific help with that. On  your model it is manageable for the end user to do, although not real easy. Are you under warranty? Manual see p. 46.  If this is "the Answer" please click "Accept as Solution" to help others find it.

I know my hard drive is failing. I cannot boot my computer tried every method. It's in the automatic repair loop. I'm going to have to send it in I'm pretty sure of it. However I was able to access the notepad through the command prompt and noticed that I can still see my files in different folders. Is there a way for me to back up my files? Is there a way I can access a program from command prompt and transfer files? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

When the UBUNTU DVD boots - you will see a screen - with Language on the left panel and two option images labelled

Use "Try ubunto" ONLY. This option will run from the DVD and "will not" install onto your harddrive
Be careful, if you do install onto the PC - you will wipe the data and software OFF your hard drive.., you have been warned, only use the option "try ubuntu"
​Now you should see a UBUNTU desktop
This at least proves the main parts of the PC are working
NOTE: if you only see a black screen - then this is a known issue, and can be resolved by using the following:-
On some hardware configurations, you need to set some kernel parameters for ubuntu to boot or work properly. A common one is nomodeset, which is needed for some graphic cards that otherwise boot in to a black screen or corrupted splash, acpi_osi= to fix lcd backlight and other problems.

Hi,

I recently aquired a new molex-sata adapter for adding a second HDD to my computer, but when I plugged it in and turned the PC on, it won't power up. Without either hard drive plugged into the power supply, the PC will start but obviously go no further, but with either hard drive plugged in the computer simply won't start.

I've tried with three molex-sata adapters now and none of them will make it work, so I was wondering if it is likely that the new adapter has ruined my hard drive? If not then any tips for fixing it?

Hi I'm new to the forums so I hope this is the right place to post this nbsp But anyways I basically dropped my HP Notebook -f Fail? DST Check Drive Short Hard dx and now it won't boot Hard Drive Short DST Check Fail? When I turn it on it goes to the loading screen for a few seconds and then goes to a blank black screen and after a long while a blue screen that has an 'Unmountable Boot Volume' error Sometimes it starts and says 'Preparing Automatc Repair' but only for a few seconds again then it goes back to the black screen and the same error I saw some tutorials but it involved me getting a bootable CD or USB drive and I tried that and it still won't work It just makes the loading screen stay on a little longer then goes back to the error So I ran a System Quick Check and it failed the Hard Drive Short DST check I don't know what any of this means do I need a new laptop nbsp

It appears the impact of dropping your computer damaged the hard drive. The Hard Drive Short  DST Check Fail error is an indication that the hard drive has failed or is about to fail.
