Windows 7: Disk 2 (external hard disk) is Unknown, Not Initialized

Q: Windows 7: Disk 2 (external hard disk) is Unknown, Not Initialized

Hello,

I have run into a problem that has been causing me quite a bit of headache as of late. A week ago, my WD Elements External Hard Disk is not displaying under hard disk drives, but does display under Devices and Printers. This is what it shows under computer management:

I have tried to initialize the disk using MBR and GPT options but failed receiving I/O Disk Error.

Please help, thank you.

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/directdownload.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Sorry to say your WD Elements is dead and you have tried everything. There is nothing left for me to do, honestly. I would have done the same thing before declaring it dead.. No DIY data recovery is possible. The only option open to you is to entrust it to Western Digital Data Recovery partners in your region. Check with them whether there is any hope of recovering data in good shape.Telephonic consultation is free.

Hi,

I'm new to this forum.

My external hard disk (Seagate) is detected in the task bar after connecting, but not visible in "My Computer".

It is visible in Device manager under Disk Drives but not under USB.

There are few threads in this forum which are similar to mine, except that their Drives are visible in the Disk Management as Unallocated Space, mine is not.

SEE ATTACHMENTS !!!!!!!!!

I've tried all tools, tried in Windows XP still no solution.

Is there any way to atleast recover the data !!!!!!!!!

Your reply is appreciated !!!!!!!!

Have you tried running the Seagate SeaTools for Windows to diagnose/repair.

If not check your external drive now.

Hello. Through the power of google, I have come here to see If I can get any help recovering data. Essentially found this thread: disk 1 is unknown, not initialized, unallocated and just having really similar issues.

Issue is with my sisters External Hard drive, a WD My Passport Elite 070B.
Asked her a few questions on how she was using the drive/any issues and she explained that she had to pull the usb plug while still reading/writing because it would hang/freeze (/facepalm)

Downloaded PW Minitool Recovery and EasyRecovery Pro Trial, but haven't really run any lengthy tests yet. Just tried them out for 10 mins to see if anything would show up. Going to leave the computer on tonight and do a full scan though.

Some other things I have tried:
-Tried connecting it to other PC's/Laptops(XP/Vista/Windows 7/OSX). Same thing.
-Tried different USB cables

Any suggestions or things I should try?

This quick new hard disk. So sad I cant access it anymore? why this happen?

You can see from the photo MY computer cant even see this driver anymore, so I check on the
- Disk management it said unknown no driver letter too ,Not initialized.
-Click Initialized it said i/o device error

I have try uninstall the device and restart let it install again still the same.
Checking many thread have the same problem, I wonder anyone solve this kind of problem before?
--------------
Update the possible cause of it, I believe my external hard disk spoil because my laptop was low battery and suddenly off either it goes Hibernate or off there is no time to read or write in the hard disk.
Then I just unplug the external hard disk.

If you face this situation don't unplug it, turn on the computer back and do a proper remove or shut down everything.

Hi empog,

Welcome to Seven forums.

It could be an either an issue with the harddrive itself or it is formatted in a partition which is not recognized by windows.

Once the harddrive is connected open command prompt and type diskpart and hit enter. Then type list disk and hit enter.

Whatever information is displayed kindly post a screenshot for the same.

A:Unknown - Not Initialized Disk (External HD)

Hello Matterito!

You could try a couple of things: changing the enclosure, as this one's controller may be corrupt, or hooking up the disk directly to the computer.
Also, see if your USB drivers need updating.

Following this, it may be that your disk is just damaged. It could be just that the partition table is corrupted, so may be writing full zeros to the disk and repartitioning and reformatting it would help fix the issue. That is in the case that you don't need the information on the drive.

Hi I've been recovering data from three older internal hard drives for a friend by way of an external HDD enclosure connected via USB to my laptop It went well for the first two HDDs but the third well It's a Maxtor DiamondMax HDD GB and is also marked SATA On most occasions the HDD in question does not appear under My Computer Under Devices and Printers I see the external HDD enclosure as quot USB to ATA ATAPI bridge quot but not the HDD In Disk Management I see my internal drives and CD DVD ROM but for the HDD in question only quot Disk Unknown Not 2 Disk unknown, initialized HDD) is (external not Initialised quot - I get the option to initialise it as MBR or GPT I cancel at that point On rare and seemingly random occasions my laptop does pick up the HDD as drive F but usually asks me if I want to format it nope At this point Disk 2 is unknown, not initialized (external HDD) it also appears under Devices and Printers My Computer and in Disk 2 is unknown, not initialized (external HDD) Disk Management as 'RAW' and 'healthy' Disk 2 is unknown, not initialized (external HDD) On three occasions I have seen the drive name on two occasions all of the files - and on one occasion I was able to copy four files across to my laptop before losing visibility of it So I know all the files are there However the HDD disconnects itself or is disconnected quite quickly such that I am back to position for the vast majority of the time I have tried TestDisk and EaseUS Data Recovery Wizard which do not see the HDD I have also tried MiniTool Partition Wizard which mostly does not see the HDD but on one occasion did pick it up as F and also its name At that point I searched for files but after a short time the HDD became disconnected PW carried on scanning but after - hours re-started having found nothing though I suspect that behaviour was more to do with the HDD becoming disconnected in mid-scan So I am back at position Disk Management sees it as Disk unknown and not initialized nothing else sees it I hear the HDD quietly spinning and can feel a low-level vibration on the rare occasions it appears as the F drive it makes a bit more noise when reading but nothing out of the ordinary - so I think it's okay mechanically I'm now out of ideas Any suggestions Thanks in advance for any help

I've got 600GB HD (Rock mobile disk) that goes without saying need to be recuperated. It was working fine earlier this summer when I last accessed it. A few weeks ago, I plugged it in again and it gave me an I/O Device Error, read and unspecified error.

I have been researching a solution non stop and today when i plugged it in once again something worst happened, this time I see a External HD not Detected: Disk 1, Unknown, Not Initialized in Disk Management.

Can someone please help?

I guess there is mechanical problem with the hard drive. you can try checking and repairing bad sectors (http://www.articlesbase.com/hardware...s-6907958.html), or just send it to some drive repair center.
but, if there is important files on the drive, you'll have to recover data before repairing it.

Is you have a empty hard drive kicking about or somewhere to store you data, move it all to there.
Then format you drive, see if that works.

A:Disk 1 Unknown, Not Initialized

I'm not sure you will have much luck if the disk is not readable. You can usually use a Linux distro to try to read it, but you've tried that. If it can be read you can also try Copy & Paste - in Windows Recovery Console. Other than that you could try Recuva and see if that will work. But, if the disk can't be read, I'm afraid there is nothing you can do if those 3 options don't help.

Hi, thanks for reading this and thanks for your help.

My laptop took a fall and after that it doesnt enter the boot sequence for windows, stops at the laptop manufacturer logo.

I remove my hdd from the laptop and put into a external drive i keep for this purpose, checking hdd?s.

I can?t find the drive in my computer but I can see it in disk managment. It says Disk unknown - not initialized.

I?ve tried using PW but i cant see the drive on there. I would really like to keep my files I have on that drive but it seems to me that it toast.

That is bad news mate. Usually a mechanical HDD won't survive physical shock like dropping etc. This is because of the microscopical gap between the head and platter. Heads flying height on modern HDDs is about 5-10 nano-meters. For example: an average human's hair is about 25000 nano-meters in diameter. A drop will most likely cause the head to stuck on platter or cause scratches on platter surface.
I would suggest diagnosing the HDD using "Seagate Seatool" and verifying it's health.

SeaTools for Windows | Seagate
Run the tool and select your external HDD for testing. Then choose "Basic Tests --> Shot Generic" and wait for it to finish.

If the test is a pass, run "Basic Tests --> Long Generic". If either of the test fails, the case will be beyond DIY and you should consult a data recovery pro for recovery.

Start with this free tool. You should try to recover the partition before worrying about recovering the data. If you can recover the partition, the files should be OK if they haven't been over-written.

Best Free Partition Manager Freeware and free partition magic for Windows 7, Windows 8, Windows Vista and Windows XP 32 bit & 64 bit. MiniTool Free Partition Manager Software Home Edition.

Select Partition Recovery Wizard. Choose the drive, then full disk, quick scan. Quick Scan may take 5 or more hours.

If the partition is eventually found, select and double click on it. You should then see all files in the Explorer.

This 2.5" SATA drive is from a Toshiba that seems to have died this morning. There's no boot, no BIOS, nada.
I removed the drive and attached it via USB to my Win7 box where it shows as "Unknown, Not initialized, and offline." There are no rt-click options in disk management. I can hear the drive spinning, but it shuts down on its own occasionally, and sometimes won't power up at all without a bit of fiddiling.
I can't get any response at all from my Linux box, and neither Test Disk nor Recuva finds it at all.
Is there anything else to do, or is this drive dead, as I suspect it is?

If the controller in the enclosure failed removing the drive and slaving it into a desktop PC may let you recover your files. If the drive failed there isn't much you can do.

A:Disk unknown, not initialized, and not showing partition

Hi

For any serious troubleshooting, diagnostics or recovery attempt, you should always connect an HDD to a direct SATA port. Usually you can easily remove the header of any Seagate Golex drive and then connect it to an internal SATA port.

Let us know what "Disk Management" reports when you connect the drive directly.

A:Recover Data from Disk that is unknown and not initialized

If the data is critical, and it sounds like it is.. the first thing I would do is use a software that makes a sector by sector backup or image of that uninitialized drive. That way if trying to make it readable by initializing it should hose it, you have a copy.

After that, if you know that the unititialized drive was at one time formatted NTFS then you might try initializing it with Partition Wizard freeware

But it may be worthwhile to talk to someone well versed in disk recovery. There may even be some dedicated forums around for that specialty.

If you get lucky and the Partition Wizard initialization shortcut works, then the files should be there after doing a non-destructive format as NTFS file system.

Assuming that's what it was to begin with.

I ran BIOS diagnostics on a Dell OptiPlex 3010 yesterday and received an error code (2000-0142) - short self test unsuccessful. I pulled the drive and swapped a new SATA drive to get the user back up and running quickly. I'm trying to connect the drive with the error to my laptop using a StarTech USB 2.0 to IDE SATA Adapter. When I open Disk Management I see Disk 0 (my laptop drive) and Disk 1 (the connected drive). It says Unknown / Not Initialized. When I right click and try to initialize it says "The device is not ready." I've tried the more actions > refresh / rescan. Now when I right click the option to Initialize Disk is grayed out and I can only see Offline and Properties.

I browsed through a thread from about 2 years ago and couldn't find a helpful solution.

A:disk manager shows DISK1 unknown and not initialized

I had a Seagate drive fail suddenly last week -- a lot like the situation you described, and neither the Seagate nor the WD drive diagnostics even see the drive when it's in an external drive caddy. When I connect it to an internal drive cable, I get a SMART error and the PC hangs on the boot.

Have also tried Minitool Partition Wizard and some other data recovery apps, which CAN see the external drive, but they can't find or recover any partitions.

Suggest you check with Minitool as they offer a free trial of a data recovery app that might work for you.

This is the first time in years that I've had a drive fail and NONE of the data recovery apps have been able to find anything on the drive.

Hi.
My external (seagate) hard drive can be detected, but it won't show on My Computer. I tried few options however the device is still not being recognised.

It appears in my device manager. I have uninstalled it, plug my hard drive back. It gets detected, but it still won't appear in My Computer.

It also appears in disk management. It's shows as Disk 1 Unknown, Not Initialised and the right column is blank.

I downloaded the MiniTool Partition Wizard and attempted to recover my data. I completed all the steps expect the last step as I can't right click to give the drive a letter.

I have important unbacked information on this device. Any help would greatly be appreciated. Thanks

A:External Hard Drive Not Detecting. Disk 1 Unknown.

Hello Liyah,

Your screenshots are two small to be able to read.

For now in Disk Management, see if you area able to right click on the smaller Disk 1 box in the lower pane, and click on an Online or Initialize option in the context menu. Afterwards, make sure the disk has a drive letter.

Disk - Set as Offline or Online

Hope this helps for now,
Shawn

A:External Hard Drive HELL (Unknown, Not Initialized)

Do NOT initialize it. With a usb stick or dvd Puppy Linux boot firmly in place ready to boot, can you reconnect the WD 2TB drive back to the computer like it was in the old days? Boot Puppy Linux, copy all the data folders and files onto another reliable external media. If that does not work, you might be heading for a local business-oriented computer fix-it place. However, let's see what others here might want to add.

Hi Jumanji,

My external HDD (WD) is not getting recognized in my laptop from last few weeks. I have followed different threads but didn't get any working solution.

I have tried below options:

1. Disk management : Initially showing MBR/GPT options but none worked. After that its showing my external HDD as 'Disk1 unknwon not initialized'.

2. MiniTools Partition Wizard : Installed MiniTools Partition Wizard v9 in my laptop however my external HDD is not showing in the tool as Disk2.

Could you please help me to get the issue resolved or recover the data at least.

Many thanks !!

Hi all, Let me start off by saying i have spent the last few hours looking online for anything that would be able to help sort out my problem and found your forum the most helpful and the only one i have signed up to. So thankyou in advance.

I have a WD1200D036 (2.5 120GB external) that is not showing in My Computer nor was it showing up in DM but after going to device management\Disk Drives then Volumes tab and clicking on Populate it turned up in Disk Management as: Disk 1 Unkown not initialized. when i click on it and select initialize disk it opens up and asks me to select disk 1 and what partition style (I just sent with MBR) then click ok. It pops up with a error "Incorrect Function"

Any ideas??

Hi

I would suggest verifying the health condition of your hard drive first. You can use "WD Data Life Guard Diagnostic" to do that.

Download : WD Support / Downloads / Legacy Internal / WD RE2

The WD tool will list both your internal HDD and USB HDD for testing. Select the USB one and choose "Extended Test" to run. Let us know the test result in next reply.

Hey,

Yesterday, I was working with my PC while my 1TB Seagate external hard (http://www.amazon.com/Seagate-FreeAgent-Ultra-Portable-External-STAA1000101/dp/B0045JLPMO) was plugged in via USB. The USB connection was a little bit loose.

Then when I was plugging a USB flash memory in, I noticed that the external hard was disconnected.
I connected it again, but it didn't appear in My Computer.
Here is the state in Disk Management and Device Manager:

After that, I plugged out the "SATA to USB converter" from the hard and connected it directly to SATA cable inside the PC case (like internal HDD), but this time nothing showed up in Disk Management, Device Manager and BIOS. However, it took a long time for the system to boot.

I searched and read lots of threads and tested some other stuff:

(It didn't appear in Minitool Partion Wizad).

I've got a lot of data on this HDD which really matters to me.
Any help is really appreciated.

Hi there Sedhadi,

If your HDD is failing the manufacturer's tests it is probably dead. IF you need to get your data back look for a reputable data recovery company in the area.
Hope that helps.

Hello

I am trying to recover data from my external HD 1 TB Fantom Drive GreenDrive. It crashed and I had no choice to force power down. When I look into Disk Management - I see that Disk 1 Unknown Size Not Initialized.

See Disk Man.JPG for printscreen of Disk Management.

I tried following the Mini Partition Tool advice and did not find the external drive on the software. Please see Mini Partion Tool.JPG for print screen.

I am thinking about buying another external HD 2TB and clone this drive to recover the data. Any advice to clone a drive that I cannot select.

Thanks in advance for your help!

I've seen that and the HDDs had truly crashed, wasn't anything I could do but in a couple of instances I sent them off to a firm that recovers data if the platters/disks in them haven't been physically damaged. Sometimes the read-write heads will scratch the platters and they are then truly screwed up.

Hi!

First don't mess up with the WD drive settings.. download partition wizard 7 (its free)..then .. open it ..click wizard(menu) .. select partition recovery wizard.. and it will find the partitions on it i think.. that way you can recover your partition that has been lost.

This could be any issue causing your problem , software , usb drive may have errors on it / or ?
Imaging your 150 Gig via Usb will take time { Mine are about 40-50 Gig } Operating System And Programs Only.

I personally partition my main Drive eg: c:\ and d:\ and so only the operating system is on C;\
Then use the D;\ to store your personal files. , this way your c:\ wont keep growing in size as you are storing everything there.
If you cant actually do anything with the computer because of warranties as you stated "just serviced" , ask them why you cant Image Drive.

Options:
1/ Try another hard drive to backup to.{ Usb will always be slower } than directly connected to Mobo.
2/ Use Mini Tool Partition Wizard [ Free } to create another partition - http://www.partitionwizard.com/partitionmagic/partition-windows-7-system.html
3/ Remove all Temp Files / Restore Points / etc with Ccleaner { Free ] - https://www.piriform.com/CCLEANER
this will reduce C:\ size to minimal size { defrag drive also }.
4/ Use any program to Image C:\ { I use Acronis }. to the D:\ Backup Folder.
5/ Then copy the image to any portable drive or external if need be.
6/ Use the D:\ for your personal files and folders as a backup also.

Sometimes you have to do things yourself - than rely on Service Centres and Costs.
If you run a Business then you claim all your costs incurred.

All this will take time but you will have backups and feel at ease.

hi all,

i would like to ask you a very basic question:

What is the difference between an external hard disk and an internal hard disk mounted on external enclosure?

Is using internal hard disk in external enclosure risky in terms of loosing the data?

Is using internal hard disk in external enclosure reliable to use?

kindly let me know as there is a vast difference in the price of these hard disks. The external hard disk is costing more and if i use internal hard disk in external enclosure price is very much reduced.

my only concern about using internal hard disk in external enclosure is the reliability.

thanks in advance,

Couple of hours ago my Windows 7 could not recognize my external USB hard disk (Maxtor Basic). It came up on Disk Management and Device Manager but not on My Computer. However I fixed it (by deleting its line off regedit in HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\MountedDevices, plugging out the ext. HD and plugging back in). Windows automatically installed the drivers and I could access the drive.

But now Windows shows my Maxtor as a fixed disk drive, instead of "devices with removable storage". I still have the option to "Safely remove hardware and eject media" from taskbar, however I rather have Windows treating it as a Removable USB Storage so that the disk can sleep when not in use. I am pretty sure it has something to do with regedit, so any help would be appreciated.

Welcome to Windows 7 Support Forums, Sactyr.
A word of caution! Its never a good idea to alter your register,
IMHO please review your device manager and check your devices for your disk drives, check for any warnings in the driver area.
I'm attaching my screenshot for comparison as I have a similar configuration.

If I am saving a backup to internal hard disk vs USB 3.0/2.0 USB external hard disk

1. Backing up to an internal 3.5 hard disk vs backing up to an external 2.5 hard disk using USB 3.0, roughly how much extra time would the external backup need to complete the backup process?

2. Backing up to an internal 3.5 hard disk vs backing up to an external 2.5 hard disk using USB 2.0, roughly how much extra time would the external backup need to complete the backup process?

A:Speed of saving to internal hard disk vs USB 3.0/2.0 external disk?

There's no definitive answer, it would all depend on which internal drives you had (SSD/HDD, SATA 6GB, SATA 3GB) and which external drives you had and their relative transfer speeds. It's all just guesswork without that info.

I have a problem regarding my external Toshiba hard disk 500 GB where it can?t be detected in my computer and also disk management. I have formatted the external HD since I was asked to format it when an error popped up.
So I formatted it and after the formatting completed, I tried to connect the hard disk to my Windows Win 7 laptop. When I connect it to the laptop, it can?t be detected and yet the hard disk is blinking with its white light like it used to when it is connected to the laptop. I tried the disk management thingy, but it can?t detect my hard disk. I tried in other laptops but the result is same
What can I do to make it better? Please help me.

A:External hard disk not detected in My Computer and in Disk Management

First off, how old is your Toshiba external HDD? Also, when it starts to spin up, do you hear any sort of clicking or whining noise?

If you hear any noises that sound off, it's possible your external HDD is failing.

When you formatted it, what file system did you use to do so? Because sometimes even if Windows can't detect it, I have had success with booting with a Ubuntu Live CD, and then connecting the external HDD in order to format it that way. It all has to do with how Windows formats HDD's and how Ubuntu and other Linux systems do.

If you can I recommend downloading Ubuntu onto a CD and boot to it on one of your computers, in the Live CD mode, so it doesn't install anything. Once its loaded, plug in the Toshiba and try to format it as NTFS (this is important, because Ubuntu doesn't use it as a native file system, so you need to make sure that NTFS is selected on the format window, not EXT4 or the other types of Linux OS File Systems)

If it doesn't work, post back here, and I will see if I can help you some more. Also feel free to PM me if you have any other issues.

Regards,
-Alex

I may not be able to deal with the drives connected to Windows 10 - for I don't know how it will treat alien drives. As I see it both drives are bad ( In Windows 10).

I do understand that you have a SATA to USB adapter. Can you just take one drive - mark it as No 1 --, connect it to a Windows 7 system and post the screenshots of Windows Disk Management and PW screenshot? Always post full screenshots with all information seen and not truncated/cut screenshots.

Mark the other drive as Drive 2, unplug drive No.1 , plug in drive No2 and again repeat the screenshots. We shall not mix drive 1 and drive 2 together. It will lead to confusion. We shall deal with only one at a time.

I would rather prefer to work within a known environment.

I have an external hard disk which got corrupted. When i connect the disk through USB it shows as an unknown device in the disk management with no option to format.

In My computer the device is showing as H: drive but unable to access it. It asks if i want to format or not but when i go for format it does not do it. I want to erase the disk completely as of now. What should i do??

I tried to load it from linux but there it shows as Device Error. Disk Failure is Imminent.

Can something be done or is it a hardware failure.

A:External Hard disk showing as RAW in disk management

Sounds like the drive is failing or the circuitry in the enclosure is faulty.

I would first remove the drive from the enclosure and hook it up as a slave to a desktop PC. See if you can then access it. If you can, then post back for further instructions with the version of your OS.

I want to install it on the external hard drive.

Is it possible to install windows 7 on a USB external hard disk like the one above?

If yes then how?

My dad was cleaning out the office and came across a nice, unopened, sealed box copy of Windows XP Professional. He told me they never used it, so he gave it to me.

I've got my handy dandy 500GB External Hard Drive here, I'd love to experiment.

How can I install Windows XP to the Hard Drive and boot off of it?

Do I have to do anything special? Or is it like installing to a regular computer; boot into the installer, select your drive, install, yay.

Any help would be nice--thank you!
Oh yes, I have posted this in the External Hardware forum as well, I was unsure where to post it, sorry if its considered spam!!

Hej,

My external hard disk up until a few weeks ago had been working perfectly. The next time I used it - windows 7 will not recognise it. I have tried different USB ports and computers. But it doesn't seem to work. It doesn't show up in device manager or disk manager. Its like nothing is plugged in. I tried switching hard disk cases and power supplies. But still nothing. The hard disk seems to try and run every so often, the light flashed red and it makes whirring noises as if it was connecting to the computer.

Please I dont know what else to do ? And it has almos 1500 GB of data.

Thanks for any future help

Hello vaena10 and welcome to Seven Forums.

Since you've tried different USB ports and even different computers, it sounds like the HD may have died. You might find something that lets you retrieve your data from this previous thead. I'd suggest reading the entire thread before trying any of the tips:

Hi,

I have installed win 7 in my new computer, evrything was working perfect while I was using it without any external hard disk.

Now I shutdown the computer just to connect the External HDD, after restarting it windows loads and mouse pointer appears with black screen. after waiting for sometime the blue screen error appears and system restarts.

everything works fine if I remove this external HDD. also if I connect this HDD to another old computer it works smoothly.

I don't understand whether this is a windows problem or hardware problem, please help me and guide what to do.

Thanks in advance
ravi

A:Windows 7 crash if external hard disk is connected

Hi bkzed, Welcome to SF

If you are having a true blue screen then please post the dump file http://www.sevenforums.com/crash-loc...d-problem.html

Sometimes programs that deal with disk drives can have issues with ext HDD especially those connected via usb (how is yours connected) an example of this is acronis or partition managers, do you have any such programs installed, if so it may be worth temp removing them to see if it fixes your problem or just post the dump and we can have a look

Hope this helps

I have a laptop with processor ghz and DDR RAM which suitable to install vista I heard many people said that RAM just only eonugh store vista services means that no more available memory to store other third party software services that installed I know I can increase my page file but I don want to do that because it will slow Vista Windows external Possible? hard disk? install inside down performance Is possible install VISTA inside external hard disk Because I don want install vista inside fixed disk which required reformat disk if vista not suitable for my laptop Very time consuming to uninstall OS on fixed disk Haha I just want to try Possible? install Windows Vista inside external hard disk? VISTA only Here's my question Possible? install Windows Vista inside external hard disk? If boot from windows Vista DVD will it able to detect my external hard disk Is required to change bios settings Now if having two OS which XP inside fixed disk and Vista inside external hard disk How I gonna choose which OS I want to login at the startup

A:Possible? install Windows Vista inside external hard disk?

Answers:

1. That depends on if your bios is capable of booting from a USB device. Read the manufacturer's instructions to see if this is possible.

2. You are probably going to have to choose one or the other by changing the settings in your bios to point one way or another. So each time you reboot, you are going to have to go into your bios and select the bootable device.

Some other observations: I think that the performance that you are going to get is going to be substandard... you already don't have enough memory and the fact that you will be running the OS from the external drive, well, that should slow it down quite a bit as well.

Be sure that if you do go through with this that you don't accidentally wipe out your fixed disk... I have seen this happen a lot with people "trying" Vista.

I have an Acer Iconia W500 that came preinstalled with Windows 7 32bit Home Premium. I made recovery discs from the tablet before installing Windows 8 on it, which runs great. What I would like to do, if possible, is to use those Windows 7 restore discs and restore them to an external hard drive and be able to boot from it and run the original Windows 7 that came preinstalled. The reason I am wanting to do this, as there were some programs, drivers, and other things that I cannot download from Acer or retrieve from the restore discs, and can only access from the OS if it is actually running. Thanks, ahead of time, for any help.

A:Help Restoring Windows 7 Recovery Disk to External Hard Drive or USB

This is why many WIn8 previewers keep the old OS in a Dual Boot so it is readily accessible by booting or via Explorer. It would have also been better to back up a Win7 backup image which could be virtually mounted in Disk Mgmt. to access any files. Recovery Disks are not that flexible and will only recover the machine to exact factory condition on the internal HD.

What drivers or other needed software is missing from the Acer Support Downloads webpage for your model. These can often be found via Google. I have never seen a problem with Acer in countless Clean Reinstall - Factory OEM Windows 7

Hi,
I'm using Dell studio 1558 laptop with Windows 7 and 8 in dual boot.
I've 2 external hdd, WD my passport 0740 and Sony HD E1.

well in windows7, these 2 ex-hdd or any one of them doesnt go to stand by,
but in windows8, they go to stand by (stops spinning, indicator led goes off).

In both, windows 7 & 8, same time duration for "turn off hardisk after" are selected, and all other power options are same, I've checked.

Even i face the same issue with my windows 7 in desktop.

What should i do to make them go to stand by in windows 7 ?

A:How to make external hard disk sleep/stand by in Windows 7

I would shorten the Sleep period before it proceeds to Hibernate, to take advantage of the Hibernate function which is perfected in Win7.,

I set my installs to Sleep at 30, Hibernate at 45-60. This writes the desktop to HD and shuts the PC down, whereas Sleep keeps power to the RAM and apparently the USB ports. When you resume from Hibernation it also starts up much faster.

A:How do i fix unknown, not initialized and unallocated external hd?

Sorry to be the bearer of bad news ... but I had almost exactly the same thing happen to me on a Seagate 2TB hard drive. Working for months, even passing surface checks with no errors and then, one day -- "bad disk".

I've tried every data recovery app I could find against it (4 of them) and none of them find anything.

I've had drives fail me over the years and have never run into this situation where the drive powers up but NOTHING can be recovered from it.

So, I've resorted to sending it off to a local data recovery outfit

Hey guys,

I have this new Western Digital My Book that I got about 6 months ago and it suddenly will not show up when I plug it in. I tried looking for solutions on what's happening but I can't get past the first few steps, until I found one where it says that the drive is probably toasted! Anyway, I'm still not giving up hope. I tried it on two computers, I tried uninstalling and reinstalling the driver but it's still the same. I tried initializing it and it's giving me "The request could not be performed because of an I/O device error". I would like to chkdsk it but I forgot what the drive letter of the hard drive, so I can't really search it.

Here're some screenshots.

A:Can't format hard-disk nor do partition when using boot disk. Hard-disk failure

It sounds like it might be the bootable CD you've created is not picking up the HDD's/partitions.
To eliminate this as a posibility travel to bootdisk and grab the WinME bootdisk and boot from there. If it picks up the HDD you can FDISK and Format from there.
The other option is to boot using the XP CD and let it handle the formatting/partitioning duties...

Some background Where I m working right now we have a server with two virtual machines running servers on it As far as I know the server uses vSphere VMware s host for virtual machines or so it seems enables management and setup of virtual machines on the an drive Windows R2, disk vSphere, external and Server hard 2008 actual machine Each virtual server runs Windows Server R For our purposes it s not vSphere, Windows Server 2008 R2, and an external hard disk drive really important that there are I only want this to work with one of them anyways The issue There is a USB vSphere, Windows Server 2008 R2, and an external hard disk drive hard disk drive plugged into the actual physical server right now The problem is that I can t seem to connect it using the vSphere interface to the virtual machine that is running Windows Server R I ve read this http www techrepublic com blog networking how-to-add-usb-devices-to-vsphere-vms It was helpful in getting me to the point where I added the USB controller to the virtual machine Now I need to add the USB device But it doesn t show up Anyone have any experience in this Any ideas nbsp

A:vSphere, Windows Server 2008 R2, and an external hard disk drive

According to this here:
http://vninja.net/virtualization/using-usb-pass-through-in-vsphere-4-1/
"If none show up, make sure it?s actually connected to the host. If your device is indeed connected, but still not listed in the vSphere Center Client it?s not supported."
The device (hard disk drive) that they have might actually not be supported. I find that highly unlikely as it's just a USB 3.0 hard disk drive... but at the same time, it's possible that it may not be supported.

Some further reading here:
http://www.vmware.com/support/vsphere5/doc/vsphere-esx-vcenter-server-50-new-features.html
"USB 3.0 devices connected to the ESXi host are not supported."
The ESXi host (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ESXi) being the computer running the vSphere host OS, so this further suggests that it might actually be the case that the system does not support the drive plugged into it. (On account of it being USB 3.0.) I would HOPE that since USB 3.0 is backwards compatible with USB 2.0, this wouldn't be an issue... but still, it is a possibility in my opinion.

EDIT: Also worthy of note, vSphere will allow me to add the UPS device we have connected to the server to the Virtual Machine... so it IS seeing USB devices. Just not the USB device I want it to.

Hi Elnene,

I am actually having the same issue regarding a spare external drive and Windows 7. The drive works perfectly on XP and Wii but the second I plug it into my laptop (windows 7) **YOU NEED TO FORMAT......** This is not an option! I have searched the internet far and wide - there are a few fixes that have worked for some but unfortunately not me. I also noticed that NONE / NO ONE / NOT ONE Windows 7 'Help sites' that have Windows 7 'gurus' have bothered to EVER answer this rather common problem. There are threads older than 4 years that have never been answered and I see your thread is already 4 weeks old... Sad really.

I CAN'T BELIEVE MicroSoft can't help regarding this issue???????????????????

In this time I hope you have come right!!!
Kind regards

A:wd 2tb external drive - unknown, not initialized and unallocated

Hello nsingla and I am sorry you and your brother have this problem!

Things don't look so good now. You've done and tried a lot with aim you need, still looks like the drive's partition table and/or file system are corrupted to a stage that prevents other software to work correctly onto the drive.

I could additionally suggest trying to scan and repair the drive. Try downloading the WD ultra Drive Utilities for Windows and see if you could repair the drive:

Support Answers

If nothing works, the drive is probably too damaged and beyond repair. Hope this is not the case. But perhaps the worst part for the drive was the formatting attempt. Which, by definition, would delete everything from the HDD.

Good luck and post back with results!

You should try directly conmcting it. If that does not work, try this: Recover a flash drive turned RAW ? Partition Wizard and TestDisk. Do recovery with partition wizard. (Don't mind the name) But if that does not work, your drive is dead. Like a wise man said, backup, backup, backup!

If not, then how should I ensure that I can easily install Windows 8 after a hard disk crash? Do I have to keep my Samsung optical disk of Windows 7?

I'm not positive, but I'd guess a $14.99 price for Win 8 would be a download, unless Samsung is offering some special promotional price for a disc.

I've seen a price of $69.99 for Windows 8 Professional, which I think is for a disc.

I'd find out what that $14.99 price is good for. It may be for an ISO download, in which case you could burn the ISO to a disc.

I'd keep the Windows 7 disc regardless. If you are like most people, you probably will find 7 preferable to 8.

It would be helpful for you to tell us computer, install discs, installed hardware, connection, hardware configuration you have, as well as the age of everything, and the recent history of failures and difficulties..

A:Unknown new hard disk drive.

Do you have a media player plugged in by any chance? (iPod, Zen, Zune).

That would also show up as a removable drive, BUT, if it was a media player, you would be able to access it.
Mine has done that with my camera also. it would show 2 separate drives....one that I can't do anything with, and the other which is where the pictures are stored. If I remember, they are called "removable drive" and "fixed drive.

I guess my first guess would be an external media player. If you have one plugged in, I'd unplug it from the computer and see if that other drive disappears.

i need to reformat my hard disk but i have lost the windows xp installation disk...what can i do besides having to purchase another copy of windows?

A:Reformat hard disk without windows xp disk?

Well you kind of need a CD in order to boot from it. Keep your CD key with you and maybe borrow someone else's disk, then enter your key. Another way you could is maybe find a download-able version of windows XP that you can burn to a disk then again when prompted enter your current CD key. (I'm sorry Techspot, I DO NOT endorse illegal pirated software but in this case he isn't really stealing it because he does own XP, he just needs the disk. Or maybe there is a copy of XP available that you are free to grab and are genuinely allowed to download.)

Don't know your key? Download the keyfinder from Here Click on the THERE on that page.

You can download it from THERE (251kb) or visit the author's website for more download links:Click to expand...

and when you do get it write it down somewhere so you don't lose it, just don't tell anyone what it is though.

Gday I have Hard & Paragon Hard External Disk Suite Manager Drive USB emailed Paragon and am awaiting there reply but you guys seem to know a lot more and try and solve the problem Up to this point I have used either Acronis or Paragon for my backups I prefer Paragon over Acronis mainly because the restore by Paragon is far quicker I have both bootable CD's but in this instance I would like to concentrate on Paragon I downloaded Paragon's Advanced Recovery CD Build Put it in my rom and booted looked at a black screen for minutes Removed it and rebooted it got stuck at the loading of Vista then I got another black screen no hard drive movement Rebooted again this time with the regular Paragon bootable CD It booted into the recovery console Now this is where things go from bad to worse I tried finding my OS after a lengthy period I received an error disk i o fault no operating system found Now disk is my external hard drive where my backups are kept So I rebooted with the CD in went into the recovery console and clicked on quot safe restore quot after playing the waiting game I get a message disk i o fault Took out the Paragon CD put in the Vista one tried a repair but there was no OS to repair So I installed Vista and because I didn't want to have to reinstall all of my programs again yer lazy I know but that's what backup's are for Checked with the fresh install that my two external hard drives had there drivers and were present They were both accounted for in Vista So put back in the Paragon bootable CD got to the recovery console tried a quot normal restore quot and once again got disk i o fault So I tried a quot safe restore quot same error message Back tracked to see if my OS was still there and IT HAD GONE So again I installed Vista checked with the fresh install that my two external hard drives had there drivers and were present They were both accounted for in Vista Put back in the Paragon bootable CD got to the recovery console tried a quot safe restore quot and once again got disk i o fault Back tracked to see if my OS was still there and IT HAD GONE AGAIN So yet again I installed Vista this time I tried copying over the latest backup to a partition that the Paragon recovery console could read Tried again and yup you guessed it lost the OS again this time the error message was disk i o fault Once again I installed Vista this time however I installed the Paragon software initially it wouldn't find my backups but I was like a dog with a bone and eventually got Paragon Paragon Hard Disk Manager Suite & USB External Hard Drive to locate them This time I tried a restore from the Windows environment crossed my fingers my eyes and my legs eventually Paragon said it needed to reboot to continue the operation I rebooted and the recovery looked promising but I could not sit there and watch it waiting for it to fail so I went and watched the TV for a couple of hours I came back to my PC and OMG shock horror EVERYTHING WAS BACK Now for the question I have used the recovery console before and it found my USB external hard drives why this time could it not Footnote I also tried my Acronis bootable CD it loaded then the screen went black I have since done a backup to my external just to make sure it was still viable it worked without a hitch I also did a backup on a partition that is on a different hard drive to my OS just in case I run into this problem again Whether or not it will be read is a whole different story

hi there..

my name is Anis...i just bought external hard drive 500gb...but after I formatted it..it's just about 400++ gb can be used..i would like to know..how to use the extra/reserve space for my ext hard disk?by any means, i want to fully use my 500gb space for the external...please help me...thank you...

A:How to fully use the extra hard disk space for external hard drive?

It should have about 465GB, what are you seeing?

You will not have 500GB due to the conversion between binary and decimal for reporting sizes.

I have used a hard drive disk for 3 years or so and today when booting I see its not showing and I get a message from disk management that it is not initialized although as I say its been running perfectly all this time and was so reliable that I placed all my "needed program and file on it" ...sad eh If I right click to/and initialize will I loose all my data on the disk..? I see the disk in the management consul as 'disk one 'but with the message not initialized..can anyone help..I saw and saw an old thread but not sure if it the same thing.. Can anyone help please..?? urgent..

A:Disk not initialized message

Sounds like your disk has become corrupted, or has otherwise failed. Disks are notorious for failing, just when you think that they are "running well". The only answer for data redundancy is RAID 1 (or a derivative), plus backing up to an external hard drive.

I suggest using some sort of Partition repair program in an attempt to rebuild the disks "Index" thus potentially allowing you access to the disks contents again. However this sort of activity is risky, either you will fix the partition or make the situation worse, in my experience the outcome is usually 50 / 50 - sometimes things end with a smile, and other times a tear!

Best of luck...

Hello,

Trying to get an old external HD working.

Msg. that come up is that the Disk is not initialized.

Gives me the option of doing so.

What does not initialized mean, exactly, please ?

If I do, as the option suggests, will this wipe out everything on the HD, such as a re-format would do ?

Thanks,
Bob

A:Disk Not Initialized Msg. Meaning Of ?

It means that Windows somehow failed to recognize the mbr (its signature) as being valid. Initializing the disk will (try to) overwrite its mbr. The partition table is usually stored here.

The instructions say I should stop it when closing down pc but when I select it on remove hardware icon it just says 'this device cannot be stopped now, try later' even though I have no programs open that are using the disc. Will it cause damage if I leave it on and just close down. Have done this a couple of times but wonder if I will damage it.

A:how to know when was my external hard disk was used?

Hello and welcome to the sevens forum.

First I don't think you can tell when your external hard drive was used, unless you have something on your system that would tell you if it was used or messed with your kind a out of luck so to speak.

You can always set up a password on your external hard drive to lock people out.

Even though it appears you're having the same problem, please start a new thread. It's very difficult to keep two problems straight and who's working on what in a single thread. Thanks for your cooperation.

Please post complete details on your environment and we'll be glad to help you out.

If it's just a formatting question, Control Panel, Administrative Tools, Computer Management, Disk Management, and you can partition and format the drive there.

well, my external hard disk was working just fine then it started showing as "local disk E" and i couldn't open it. I searched online for a solution and did the "chkdsk" thing and it worked again. few hours later the problem game back.. this time what i did before didn't solve it. it only made the contents of the hard disk appear but i couldn't use it .. so i copied some of the small files i needed from my 300 gb of data on it. now it's back to the "local disk e" thing and i can't even use cmd while the hard is connected. is there a way to solve it or at least copy my files from it?
Edit: now i can't even use cmd or disk management or my computer when the disk is connected
