Preferred Solution: Laptop wont reset

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

When i try factory resetting it says 'preparing' shortly after it says 'there was a problem while resetting your PC' and under it says 'No changes were made' and under that it says 'check problem for solution' and i click it and it exits out itself and nothing happens. i need to restore my laptop to factory settings because it has gone so slow and wont let me go out applications but when it does it freezes and is very slow message edited by HarrisZaman

A:i try to factory reset/restore my laptop but it wont let me

Do you really need to use Factory Restore, which loses all your own files? Maybe it would be best to tackle the slowness. As often as not (but not always) this is due to malware. I would suggest running these three small freebies which are safe and well used on Malware forums. They often unearth what your anti-virus can miss:AdwCleaner: Download button near top - not anything else on the page).Download and "Save" the file somewhere. Go to the saved file then double click it to run the program. Use the "Scan" button, followed by the "Cleaning" button.Junkware Removal Tool (JRT) Download button near top - not anything else on the page).Download and "Save" the file somewhere. Go to the saved file then double click it to run JRT. It might appear to have stopped at times or flash the screen but sit tight until it has finished.MalwareBytes: Download button top right - not anything else on the page)Install and Run the program but before doing its Scan go to "Settings > Detection and Protection" and put a checkmark in "Scan for rootkits". Quarantine anything it finds. Please copy/paste the logs on here. Even if the symptoms go away further checks might be necessary to ensure your computer is properly clean. Also let us know if there is any improvement afterwards.EDIT:If you can't run them Save the download files on another computer then transfer them over to the one giving trouble using a flash drive.Always pop back and let us know the outcome - thanks

Hello,Basically my laptop starts, shows the lenovo screen, screen goed away and nothing else happens.Story: My laptop was being sluggish and I figured resetting it would solve allot of problems. So I did, it went to reset nothing unusual, but then, it said the reset had failed, and it gave me a couple of options, which I dont all recall, but i pressed continue. After that, blank screen nothingness.I can barely tell as my screen is semi broken, from when I was cleaning it, I guess some liquid got inside and ruined the screen somehow, but still did semi work. Conclusion: wont go past the lenovo screen when starting up because of reset that failed. I hope someone can help.Greetings, Me

So, we have multiple computers that the wireless capability stops working randomly and can be fixed by going in to the BIOS and resetting it to the defaults.

Any idea why?

system specs

Amd 64 [email protected] 1800Mhz
MSI NForce4 chipset MB
Nvidia 6600 256MB PCi-ex.
seagate barracude 80Gb
512 MB DDR.

an overclocking utility which came along with MB used to show my system as 1800MHZ as 200 MHZ with a multiplier of 9. some tweaking made it 201Mhz and x 9 and hence my system ran to 1809 MHz. but now even after i have reset the overclock and system shows 200x9 yet the running sped of the machine is 1809 Mhz and somehow i feel the macine is very laggy, ie Windows media player /winamp takes a few secs to open up etc. . . n so on.

why could this be happening and any solutions?

after scrapping through my last issue (dud ram). i now have a couple more probs. first networks connections folder is empty. second my useless wireless usb thingy doesnt work nemore (i think is cause of prob one). and third there are no network connection icons in the system tray. i am currently using the dud comp right now to type this, cabled lan works fine, just the only way to get the status is with ipconfig. have tried the winsock repair tool thingy, didnt work. tried netsh reset catalog thingy spat out some dumb error about not being able to get the information it needed something to do with a class not bein registered, no specifics of course (dear god that would be smart for windows). and thats where im stuck. cant find neinfo on wat class is stuffed or how to fix it.

Hi I had to do a factory reset on my friends Toshiba and now it wont update. My friend has a Toshiba Satellite Laptop which is a Windows 8.1 64 bit, 4 gig. The reason for a reset was do to constant freezing and video lagging. There were several things that were ocurring. I had done scans to make sure is was not a virus issue before doing a factory reset.

I have checked services to make sure it was turned on.

I tried to upload a snipit to show you the error but for some reason it wont let me download it Argh! It should have downloaded.

Here is the error code on the update page 8024A008

I go to "properties" - "customize" and press "restore default" in the "folder pictures" section and then apply the new setting but it wont go away.
I tried to find this photo on the hard drive to delete it but i cant find it anywhere.

I've included some screens to show you what I mean:

Someone let me know how to sort this out please

drummerguy101, First go into Folder Options>View tab and choose "Show hidden files and folders" and uncheck "Hide protected operating system files {Recommended}", click Apply/OK then open that Desktop folder and find the Thumbs.db file, right click it and delete it and reboot your computer. You can then go back into Folder Options>View tab and reverse the changes you made if you wish to.

All you have to do is go to your appdata>Local>IconCache.db (if you don't see it you'll have to enable hidden file in the Local folder "Properties when you right click the folder")
and then delete it.

Then you have to go on task manager>Processes tab and end task of "explorer.exe"
Then you have to go to the "Applications" tab and click new task button and restart explorer.exe by typing "explorer.exe"
Thats it!!! Hope it helped!!!

I have followed the tutorial on this site to reset the reliability history - trash RAC files etc. The graph clears ok but a few hours later back comes all the old problem. I am thinking there must be another file hidden away that is being accessed for the data. I would not be bothered normally but I check components on this test bed machine and it would be easier to see whats happening with a clean graph when I switch bits around.

Welcome to the forum,

Have you cleared the problem reports, Problem Reports and Solutions - Clear History

Or erased them from the event viewer?

That was what I had to do to keep them from showing back up in a few hours.

Hi all,

I really need some help, I bought a surface pro from a friend yesterday, it had been turned on before I got it so I thought I would reset to factory settings, all was fine until the reset was around 90%, then a box appeared saying "the computer has restarted unexpectedly or encountered an unexpected error. Windows installation cannot proceed. To install windows, click OK to restart the installation".
But when it restarts the same message pops up.
Any help welcome as I really don't have a clue what to do now.

Many thanks

A:Surface pro 2 wont boot after reset. PLEASE HELP

Hi there

I think you'll need to re-install Windows -- in the BIOS you can disable protected boot so you should be able to boot a new recovery USB for a Windows re-installation. There's tutorials on this site about making a recovery USB.

A:Vista wont do a factory reset

Start by telling us why you want to do a reset. There may be an easier way to fix whatever the problem is. A reset should always be the final option, never the 1st. We also need to know the make/model of your computer or laptop.

So i did the option on windows 10 to reset and clean my pc. It got stuck at 5 percent so I did a manual reset and when i turned it on it had a black screen. It says "an operating system wasnt found. Try disconnecting drives that dont contain an operating system. Press Ctrl+Alt+Del to restart" when i dud that it said the same thing so i went to the start up menu and pressed f11 and it went back to that black screen saying an operating system wasnt found. This is the problem I have: It won't let us access the local disk and says we don't have permission. I am the only user. It won't let us save anything on that disk either. I have gotten all of the documents, videos, and pictures backed up so that's not an issue. We are really just trying to reset the computer with a fresh start but it wont let us.

Okay so this is everything i've tried:

Resetting the computer- This wouldn't let me because it said it had an error. I did this by holding shift while restarting and then troubleshooting from there. I've tried the option of saving files and also whiping the whole computer, both ways won't work.

Booting in safe mode- it works but nothing has come out of doing anything in that mode.

What do I do? I've read multiple forums and nothing they suggest is possible. Suggestions?

A:No access to Disk and wont allow me to Reset the Computer.

OK, start by better defining no access and local disk. Is the disk the only hard disk in the computer or one of many? Is it local C: or D: or something else. Is it local internal or external via USB?

Are you logged onto the OS that is installed on the drive or is the OS operating from somewhere else (e.g. USB stick)?

Read is a form of access, can you do that? Write is another form, can you not do that? In what directories are you trying? What circumstances changed from when things last operated properly?

You could further expand your hardware profile for us.

Optional: You say you visited several forums, these wouldn't be Microsoft forums would they? Say that ain't so!

If this is permissions related, you might look at Brink's tutorials on taking ownership of your files.

A strange problem indeed.

Triple check your wiring is correct using your motherboard manual. Be sure the motherboard is mounted correctly on the standoffs and no grounds are occurring.

Faulty buttons on the case itself?

Reset bios to optimal defaults, clear cmos.

After that I would return the mobo.

Sorry I cant be more specific, Hope this helps.

My wife and daughter accidentally deleted my windows 8.1 partition along with all restore points on my hard drive. So after a long time with help from a mod on this website, it was decided a factory reset was in order. I did the factory reset, i loaded windows 8, I went ahead removing factory installed mcafee, when it came time to restart i did so. On the immediate boot up my system will not load. The screen goes between flashing light and dark black. Any ideas of what this could be? I am able to get into the BiOS screen but do not know what to select.
I have a Dell Inspiron 660 moved into a after market case. the entire system was working smooth until this all happened with the windows 8.1 being deleted. I just bought this system 6 months ago and am really hoping I dont have to buy a new one. any help is most appreciated.

Can you order recovery disks from the manufacturer ?

EDIT--- After you get it fixed, it would be a good idea to get Macrium Reflect.

Either the free or paid Standard version & make system images so you can restore your computer that way.

I bought the paid version & consider the money well spent.

I did a factor reset on my computer because i was having some issues, now when i go to start it up it will bring up a message saying something to the extent of not being able to start because it doesnt have windows on it. So my guess is that during the reset it deleted my windows 7 off the computer. I cannot even get to the sign in screen and i dont think my computer came with a restore disc, also i definatly dont want to pay another 200 dollars for a windows 7 disc. Also another thing against me is that my computer is a dvd r only it has not read a software disc that i put in it to download a game. Any ideas for a solution? all responses are well appreciated.

My laptop was running slow so I thought I would do a hard reset since I didn't have any important files on it. So I reset it and I got a blue screen error, then a listing screen with a popup box saying there was an error or my computer restarted and I should press OK to install. I found a solution online to get past the popup box, I don't remember what it was though, but now my laptop is stuck in a state of constant reboot. It goes like this:Blue HP Logo with loading circle,Black screen,Blue HP Logo,Installing and configuring Windows install screen that doesn't move past 64%,And then black screen. This process constantly repeats. Please help.

I used the media profile to download Windows 10 to a USB and everything worked fine but now there's another problem. My laptop was working after reinstalling Windows, but then I shut my laptop over and went away for ten minutes or so and I've came back to a black screen with no display at all. The white LED is on so my laptop is on. It has around 40% charge in it as of typing this. The screen is unresponsive. Please help again but thank you for helping me fix the first issue.

A:Re: I hard reset my laptop, error occurred and now my laptop...

Hi @kirsty_mcq17, Thanks for the update on your situation. I understand that you are now having issues with the display being blank and the system unresponsive. Have you tried doing a hard reset since the system stopped responding? If the system will not boot into Windows normally, let me know if you get any errors. You can also try using Safe mode. Once you are able to log back in, please make sure you download the latest HP drivers and Windows Updates. From what you described, it sounds like the system may have gone into sleep or hibernate mode. This document will take you through troubleshooting possible issues with those features. If you feel this post has answered your question, take a moment to click Accept as Solution. Thanks!

Trying to fix packard bell easynote laptop with vista home premium, it wouldnt boot so i tried the vista repair (is it just me or does this never work), when this didnt work i used the packard bell factory reset option and selected the partial recovery so as to keep users data.

It got to the point where it had to reboot but then said it was unable to continue installing vista. I thought no problem i'll do the full recovery instead.

But, now i cant seem to boot into the recovery option anymore.

Can anyone help me please?

A:Vista failed on factory reset now wont re-install

hi shotr of a reinstall i would have a look here for more info i would also look at trying a linux live cd to see if you can access the drive and save the data to an external hdd or some media if possible then go for a reinstall however that is a last resort try pb first they may have something

Hi, My partner was going to sell her HP pavilion x2 Detachable, So i went on to do a factory reset, waited around 2 hours at it slowly ticking away then it said it had failed. Ever since then it got stuck in a continous HP loading screen to resert loop. Ive tried restarting, hitting esc and tried re-doing a reset but it continously fails, now it gets to a point which im able to log in to user, comes up with preparing windows, then just goes to a blank screen.

A:HP Pavilion x2 failed factory reset now wont load

Enter the BIOS by pressing the power button and immediately tapping the F10 key. Change the system date to 01-20-2014 Press the F10 key again to save the change.  Try booting again from the recovery media.

Hi there First post so apologies for posting too much or too little information but here goes anything. have wont reset, open/do done Just but factory seems installed to Chrome I'm on a Dell XPS running Windows Vista Service Pack Using Internet Explorer for the time being Here's the problem I've downloaded Google Chrome it appears to be installed it's in my control panel registry etc However when I click on the program to run Just done factory reset, Chrome seems to have installed but wont open/do anything. it from anywhere nothing happens at all When I go to install it this happens - I go to the google chrome browser website hit Just done factory reset, Chrome seems to have installed but wont open/do anything. download it downloads fine the 'run box' appears all ok Everything goes as expected up to the 'installing' phase - The installer box runs for about - seconds then dissapears completely However as I said above Google Chrome then appears in my shortcuts start menu etc as if it has been installed correctly the only problem is Just done factory reset, Chrome seems to have installed but wont open/do anything. that it wont open Here's what I've done from the start step by step - - Did a factory reset of my PC yesterday - Updated Graphics Drivers - Tried to install Chrome problem occured Thought it might be because I hadn't installed Windows Important Updates yet So I uninstalled Chrome - Installed Windows Important Updates - Tried Chrome again didn't work uninstalled again - Disabled my virus checker and firewall and windows defender Chrome Still didn't work I then uninstalled them completely still didn't work - Downloaded offline installer of Chrome still official google version didn't work - Downloaded CCleaner went through PC and deleted all google related things from everywhere I also double checked I didn't have any other unwanted programs running McAffe was still around in my PC from the factory reset for example - Tried Chrome again still not working I've obviously tried re-downloading loads and restarting the pc a hundred times I'm literally at my wits end Have no idea what to do I literally haven't installed run or done anything else to the PC it's straight from the factory reset Also I've done factory resets lots before and never had this problem so it is strange Lastly it might be worth noting that the factory reset came with Google Desktop already installed and McAffe anti-virus As I've already said I've manually got rid of those I'm just letting you know they were there Thanks so much for reading any help would be massively massively appreciated I'll happily post any more information if it's needed

A:Just done factory reset, Chrome seems to have installed but wont open/do anything.

It's quite possible that there are remnants of the pre-installed Chrome on the computer, but how did you uninstall McAfee as just using the standard Windows Uninstall via Progs & Features is insufficient, as it leaves residue in the reg which can cause conflict problems.

A:system wont reset to factory. Says missing files.

Hi, Thank you for posting in the HP Support forum. Welcome ! I am afraid there is a bad news. The code shows that your Hard Disk Drive (HDD) has failed. This is a hardware problem - faulty Hard Disk drive (HDD). You will probably not be able to recovery your files (more to follow). I also see your warranty period has expired.  Your options:  If your computer is with warranty period expired, you will need to replace the faulty HDD - buy it on your own. There are variety of options - vendors you can choose from - you need 2.5 inches HDD SATA. You can get it online or from PC retail store.   How to replace the faulty HDD with new HDD or new SSD: please, find info and instruction in your computer's manual or watch YouTube videos examples for HP 2000 (example > . If you do not want to do this on your own, please bring the computer (or ship it) to HP Authorized Service Center where the technicians will do this for you. If you are not sure where such a center is located, check these or contact HP for assistance in finding the nearest one for you:>>>>>>   Last part - once you replace the faulty component - you will need to reinstall back your operating system - Windows or another. So, IF your computer originally came with Windows preinstalled by HP (a.k.a. OEM Windows), then you need to use HP recovery media - DVDs or USB pen drive you have previously created   or   recovery media purchased from HP. Some general info >> You can purchase the recovery media from here >> Instructions how to perform recovery >>   Please, let me know how it goes and do post back if you need assistance. Looking forward to your feeback/reply.

I was running Ubuntu Linux then decided to change back to Windows XP I was happily running the Windows set-up disc to reformat the entire hard drive After this was done the set-up disc went on to copy over a load of files and then went into a reboot the screen went black OK but then everything just hung In the end I went to power off intending to start again The computer would not power off except by my pulling out the battery and supply and wont wont power off boot Laptop cable If I reconnect the cable Laptop wont boot and wont power off I can power on with the power button after which I hear the fan and the optical drive being read but then it just stalls - nothing on the screen cannot get in bios and still refuses to power off It quot s either a big coincidence or the three symptoms no screen no bios no power-off are all a result of the failure to self-reboot during the windows set-up I have removed the CMOS battery and left it out overnight but to no avail Can anyone help My laptop is a HP Compaq NX Thanks

A:Laptop wont boot and wont power off

The first question is hardware or software? That this happened in the middle of a Ubuntu to XP conversion is interesting, but may be purely coincidental. It could be a straight-up hardware problem that just happened to occur at this time.

So, the way to determine this is to try to boot using some kind of media. XP disk, Ubuntu Live, Hiren's, whatever. It if boots, hardware is possibly good. If not, hardware is bad.

If hardware is bad, you WANT the hard drive to be bad. Everything else costs more money than the computer may be worth.

PLEASE HELP: A few days ago my laptop wasn't working very well. I was exploring my options and decided to reset it. I tried this and it told me there was an issue resetting it, so I tried resetting it again. Now the laptop will not fully turn on. It turns on and displays the hp logo then the screen goes blank. After a few minutes the hp logo displays again. All the function keys work but I can't find a solution. Could it just be the fan? Please help, my laptop is my life. The laptop is an HP Stream Model: 11-r010nr

A:Reset laptop, now laptop isn't working

Try holding the Esc key down while booting and the press F11 to run the system recovery.  If this does not work, you might have to boot from a recovery USB to restore the laptop.  If you did not create one, you can order one from HP.  If this has Windows 10 on it, you can also do a fresh install using the downloadable installation media from Microsoft.

Hi All, I bought a Sony Vaio laptop yesterday and took the xp tour and created a user account. I have decided to sell the laptop cos the screen is too small.
Is there a way to delete the user account and reset the laptop so the person who buys it thinks it is brand new? Apart from taking the tour nothing else has been loaded on the laptop.

A:How do i reset laptop???

A couple of things:

Log-in with the account you just created. Go to Start, settings, Control Panel, User Accounts. Click on the name/account and click remove.

If the above doesn't work... Re-boot laptop, press F2 until you get to a black screen. Go to Safe Mode (using the UP Arrow key) Here you'll be logged-in as the Administrator. Follow the above procedure starting from "Go to Start, Control Panel..."

On mine I just depress the "on" button & hold it there until it shuts down.

Then I can depress the button once it is off--- to turn it on.

Just to clarify, did you mean that you wanted to do a factory recovery/restore to restore your preinstalled Windows 7 back to factory conditions, or to do a system image recovery with a system image that you created?

Hi This is desktops, perhaps repost in the Notebooks section. Also if you could better describe what you want to achieve by the term 'RESET'. Is there a particular problem and you want a re-install which protects your current data?

I have a basic laptop. I downloaded an emulator for some old school games. Noticed my internet was unsually slow and it almost seemed like I had no access. Wasn't a copyright claim either btw. I can't search anything. So I tried to reset my computer, and this "virus" won't let me. It closes all my settings whenever i go to the reset page. It does the same thing on airplane mode too. I deleted all the files I could involved with the emulator. Still it's roaming around. How do I get rid of it? Like this just is uneccessary. I'm a guy who smokes ganja so be easy on me with technicalities

I have a Dell Inspiron 2200 on my hands. It's a definite problem child. Sometimes it recognizes the hard drive, sometimes it doesn't. Sometimes it sees the CD-ROM drive, sometimes it doesn't. But it is very sporadic and I have done hardware testing with Hiren's Boot CD. Everything seems to be fine. So one of my next guesses is that the BIOS or something is screwed up and decided that I need to reset the CMOS. But I have never done it to a laptop before and have no idea where to start. Help? Please?

A:Laptop CMOS reset?

Go to and then to drivers and downloads, enter your service tag number from the bottom of your laptop.
You can also click on Technical Support there to get a copy of your original configuration if you do not know it.
Then download the BIOS file: BR114952 for a floppy disk install, or I2200A07 or I2200A07.txt.
Read all the instructions, then go ahead to install. it is pretty safe compared to most other brands.
Also download and install your chipset drivers if your computer was built before 01/17/2006. In fact, I would download and install all drivers with release dates more recent than your purchase.
But be aware that you could have both defective hard drive and defective CD-Rom drive.

What happened immediately preceding this? Did you use a software program to possibly set a hard drive password? It could also be a BIOS/User password. If you go into the BIOS Setup, use your Tab and arrow keys to find Security information and see if there is an Administrator/System or User password. If someone else has physical access to your computer, check and see if he/she might have changed something.

Acer normally has a click here to begin that process under a certain subdirectory. Because my Acers no longer carry that hidden partition or the acess menu -- I can't remember where that menu was. c:\program files or c:\program files (x86) might be places to start, if such have not been overwritten yet.

Over the last few days since I started using my Inspiron with reset just PC to about anything, will Laptop barely run Windows on it after a hardware issue that arose Laptop will barely run anything, just about to reset PC a while back from my own doing I barely did anything on the laptop Laptop will barely run anything, just about to reset PC before it started acting all crazy and all I did have to do a hard Shutdown quite a few times when it seemed to freeze up on a black screen or at other times before this all started but I m assuming that had nothing to do with it though it couldn t have helped I ve tried multiple Laptop will barely run anything, just about to reset PC times to do a System Restore only to keep coming up with an error code x because of some anti-virus program installed currently running when I have more than one installed which I know shouldn t be done but dunno which work or not at any given time And now I can t even do one to before this all started as I ve repeatedly kept trying to do while disabling certain services in Windows Task Manager Because I tried uninstalling some Windows C Redistributable programs from other people who ve had the same problem where with some programs or whatever I keep getting a quot The application has failed to start because its side-by-side configuration is incorrect quot message And after I attempted installing the files I downloaded to fix this problem I got the SAME message as I do for the programs that refuse to run So did I do see something wrong in what I needed to do As at this point I feel like my only option is to reset my PC to its default settings but keeping what files I have installed even though I might lose certain programs that despite the fact they shouldn t still be working they do and doubt I can use them again after resetting the PC if I back them up and reinstall them like McAfee even if I have another Virus protection program that is still being paid for afaik But I think this is the only I can fix whatever issue is causing it as well as hopefully get back what programs I already or rather the only ones it would let me do so with deleted As I dunno what is causing said issue on apps programs to prevent me from installing downloadable files like the C Redistributable files I downloaded if that s not the issue or even installing one I didn t already have I tried looking at my Windows Event Viewer to see if it d tell me anything but it didn t do so when I redirected it to be examined through the Internet And I did maybe also try upgrading my Windows earlier before I interrupted it when I needed use of my laptop during a live television event earlier for something that I didn t even get But I dunno if that would even help at this point So thoughts

Hi!  The 840 G3 appears to have a battery compartment that is secured by screws.  Sometimes there is a combination of keys that can be pressed that will simulate the function of a power reset (powering the laptop down, removing the battery, pressing the power button for a length of time to drain capacitors, replacing battery, and powering up) so that users don't have to remove the battery.  I've googled and found some key combinations for other HP products but can't find one for the 840 G3.  Does anyone know of one? Thanks!

Hi, Thank you for posting in the HP Support forum. Welcome! I am not 100% sure if I understand you but I'll try to help. As mentioned by you and as confirmed by the product's manual, it comes with non-removable fixed battery. May be you want to perform hard reset to power off the computer >> Why do you want to perform this you write about ? Is there some issues with Windows ? If so, have you tried restarting it (instead of Shut down) ?  Because in Windows 8/8.1/10 this process is by default different from what it was in Windows XP/Vista/7.

The only way to reset the "memory" on the battery is to completely drain it.
Unfortunately, draining it once a week has probably worn it out.
Should only drain it when it shows signs of not fully charging.
