Taskbar & system tray Icons don't appear when windows 10 starts

Q: Taskbar & system tray Icons don't appear when windows 10 starts

Dear Members,

I am facing a typical problem with Laptop Lenovo G50-80 with following configuration :
Core i3 - 4GB RAM - 1TB Harddisk - AMD Radeon Graphics Card - 15.6" Screen - Windows 10 Home SL.

The problem i face is when i start Laptop Windows 10 starts... Desktop icons are displayed but Taskbar icons and icons on system tray are not displayed. Time and date are also not displayed. If i do not do anything the system state remains as it is. But if i double click on Taskbar the icons are displayed and then i can use the Laptop.

I tired following things :

I used one touch recovery to restore to factory default settings ( Twice )
Chkdsk with /r /f

But the problem remains same.

Can anybody please suggest solution ?

Preferred Solution: Taskbar & system tray Icons don't appear when windows 10 starts

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/directdownload.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

This is one of those things that could be worded in so many ways, there may be a solution out there but I have no idea what phrasing may have been used in such a case. Basically, I recently switched to using a vertical taskbar on the left side, more workable area on widescreen monitors. I love it so far, except for the change in system tray behavior. They're doubled up, which is fine, but if I have an odd number of icons it disturbs my general arrangement. This is hugely annoying for me as I frequently use the system tray to open multiple applications I always have open in the background, such as IRC or AIM. Easiest to explain using animage.

Is it possible to have the tray like it is in the second one? Or if there is a way to have a single line of icons, that is also an acceptable solution.

I'm currently personalizing the themes. Then I saw this happen.

Anyone know how to change it to default?

A:My system tray and taskbar icons changed itself!

Quickest way would probably be to just use system restore.
If you can't access the start menu, you can ctl alt del and use the run feature in the task manager. (file -> run)
Start System Restore from a command prompt

Hi...just recently when i started my computer up..and after windows loaded...there was just my background...all my icons & task bar & system tray were gone. The only way i could turn my computer off was manually....than i waited a bit..and when i started it again..windows did a disk check..than when it loaded again..all my icons & other stuff were back. But when i restart it or turn it off & than turn it on next day...its same thing again..just a background...so it looks like the only way my icons come back is when windows does a disk check.
Whats causing my computer to do this? I've had problems with trojan horse virus's recently...dont know if its related. I hope somebody out there can help me solve this problem.

Thanxs in advance

This is actually for a friend and I tried everything I could think of but nothing works. She recently installed WindowBlinds and as she was installing Avast it apparently happened (if this helps)

What happened is the icons in the System Tray, and the Quick Launch icons because the Start menu, and even the icons inside the Start menu have enlarged. They are probably 1.5x the size of the original and are also blurry. The time in the bottom right now includes the date also.

I thought her taskbar was moved up a notch, but it's as low as it can go. So thats not the problem. If you right-click the taskbar when it is unlocked and go to View, you can change the icons from large to small. It's on small. So something else happened.

Any clue what could've happened?

Could be a crap theme. Try changing themes or uninstalling WB completely.

ok a simple issue I hope
In my taskbar sytem tray icons will be enclosed in this bubble thing with the arrow on it it collects icons to save space. (sorry no idea what its called)
options in notification area are set to show all icons, but it persists to put icons in that bubble..it is not the balloon notification I'm talking about.
I would like simply that it does not hide icons in this bubble.
thanks in advance Vagablonde

A:Taskbar system tray hides icons even option is unchecked

Well that`s what ticking the box is supposed to do.

You`ve done that and yet all your icons still do not appear ?

Another way would be to check to show each and every icon and notification.

Whenever I do an Autoupdate, there are often slight changes to the system tray icons. Or, they are in a slightly different order.

Today, WU gave me an update for the display adapter; afterwards, my networking icon disappeared! (But I was still connected okay.) I went to the properties for Notification Area (Taskbar and Start Menu Properties) and the Networking checkbox was unchecked. I checked it. I've also had times when the Networking checkbox was completely grayed so I couldn't check or uncheck it.

A:Windows Updates changes system tray icons

Welcome
Most people update in the wrong way, causing problems, crashes and freezes.
Most time those updates require restarting the computer and if you have them set for upadate automatically, the restart can cause conflicts
May I suggest change your automatic update settings to notify and on the Second Tuesday of the Month (patch Tuesday) install only one or two at a time. Never mind the small concern that you have, you may be avoiding much bigger problems.
http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials...ate-reset.html
I have helped many who have had major problems, by setting update to automatic.
Patch Tuesday is Almost here, try it then and let us know.

So here's the deal My mom's laptop computer's hard drive just died I in not Icons Windows up tray system showing - 7 ran at-home diagnostics on it tried it on a different computer and listened for abnormal sounds while connected externally I'm about sure it's dead I dropped it Icons not showing up in system tray - Windows 7 off at the local PC repair shop to get a second opinion but while they have it I wanted my mom to have a functioning computer At first I was gonna run Linux off of a USB but I remembered that I Icons not showing up in system tray - Windows 7 had an old hard drive with Windows on it I got an SSD so I no longer needed it I installed the functioning hard drive into my mom's computer and it works just fine Haven't yet installed drivers for everything only the wireless card The problem I seem to be having is that even though the wireless drivers are working and I can connect to the internet through Control Panel the WLAN icon isn't showing up in the system tray -- in fact nothing save the battery and audio icons are showing up in the system tray Is there something I need to install to fix this What could be causing this

A:Icons not showing up in system tray - Windows 7

Hello Caleb, and welcome to Seven Forums.

Double check using the tutorial below to see if you have Network and any other system icon you want to show turned on.

System Icons - Turn On or Off

If they are grayed out, then see if the tutorial below may be able to help to enable them again.

System Icons - Enable or Disable

Hope this helps for now,
Shawn

Soooooooooooooo, I have designated these as different even though they both go at the bottom of the screen.
The ones on the left seem to be known as icons in the "Taskbar" but the ones on the right when installed usually say they they can be put in the "Tray". What makes them different (at least on my both my Vista and 7 OS's) is that the ones on the left, in the Taskbar, are large and the ones on the right, in the Tray, are small.
Soooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo,
Is there anyway to make them all the same uniform pixel size?

(I dun't care about Vista anymore, Lucy)

thanks for the help.

A:Taskbar / Task Tray icons

If using small icons is ok with you, you can set that in taskbar properties.
Then they should all be the same size - small icons.
Right click on the Taskbar and click Properties.

Taskbar - Use Small or Large Icons

If you want large icons in the Notification Area I don't think you can do that.
Here is an old SF Thread about this:
Notification area icons and date/time font sizes

If you're adventurous you can play with customizations and see if you can find something you prefer:

Dear Friends
The icons that normally appear in the system tray have gone missing. Clock and Wireless icons are there but Battery and Sound Volume (speaker) are missing. I have tried all help available on the net but failed to resolve the issue.
This problem is resolved by using the following method. (Only to come back on next boot.)
Start Task Manager
Under Processes, select explorer exe. END process twice
File New task Run - explorer. Exit Task Manager
Please help to resolve the problem permanently rather than ending the explorer exe and restarting each time I reboot.
Thanks.

I solved this problem by system restoring but the question I have is what caused the problem Could it be data corruption malware or something else It tray and with icons taskbar windows missing "Had" lag explorer problem seems to definitely be software related since I fixed the problem by system restoring I did not remember any major differences software related between the days this problem has not occurred and started occurring with the exception of "Had" problem with taskbar tray icons missing and windows explorer lag a Windows Update for quot Windows Defender quot it is possible for a definition update to cause these symptoms Two problems I quot had quot before system restore Taskbar icons not appearing quot most quot aren t showing up the processes are running Really bad Windows Explorer lag second lag when opening folders in "Had" problem with taskbar tray icons missing and windows explorer lag start menu alt tabbing from full screen etc About four days ago I started Vista and noticed some of my taskbar icons missing despite the fact that they re all loaded when I checked the task manager I followed this guide which said to go to quot HKEY CURRENT USER Software Classes Local Settings Software Microsoft Windows CurrentVersion TrayNotify quot and then delete the values quot IconStreams quot and quot "Had" problem with taskbar tray icons missing and windows explorer lag PastIconsStream quot I did that and restarted explorer exe it worked and brought back my taskbar icons However it s not permanent the problem comes back after I restart my computer and Windows Defender never reappears in the taskbar even after I followed those steps On the same day of the problem I notice windows explorer in general has been really unresponsive and slower than usual For example - when I go to quot Start Menu quot then open any folder windows explorer lags for seconds anything explorer related lags and is frozen before the folder actually opens Another example - When I alt tab from a full screen video game doesn t matter which game it also lags seconds before explorer responds and updates Before this problem occurred windows explorer rarely lagged or slowed down for more than seconds but now seconds I fixed the problem by system restoring but does anyone know why these symptoms showed up in the first place I want to avoid it from happening again but if it does happen again how can I solve this issue without system restoring Also I did a virus scan with Avast custom settings I set all the scan settings to highest but found nothing during the period of problems Any help and info will be really appreciated thanks nbsp

Good evening I'm not sure if this is the appropriate place for me to post this but I had a couple quibbles with dual monitor support on both Win and Win Insider preview There was the nice addition in Windows Insider Preview of with issues monitor Dual taskbar/tray icons. having a clock on both your monitors whereas Dual monitor issues with taskbar/tray icons. that wasn't the case in Win but not having the option to have the tray icons on both monitors is KILLING me I am a gamer and generally use my second monitor for generic stuff i e Steam friends chat web browsing and launching games or other things from the tray using my second monitor while I am in a game Now my problem arises because I have to set my second monitor as the main monitor That makes games launch on that monitor by default and I use DualMonitorTools to do things like lock my cursor to one screen switch windows quickly from one screen to another etc Those functions may be rolled into Win by default but when I was using I needed to use third party software to be able to launch what I needed on my main monitor while still having access to my tray icons and taskbar The games I play I launch on the smaller second monitor which is my quot primary monitor quot in Windows settings and then use DMT to flip them to my REAL primary monitor This doesn't work with all games not to mention it is pretty clunky - when it should be easy I am not sure if I explained my issues well enough but in summary how about an option to have dual splash areas for tray icons

While trying to to remove some malware/virus the computer hung while an antimalware program was quarantining and removing a single file, it hung up for over an hour. Computer froze. I powered down and restarted in safe mode, which immediately failed then restarted, I let it progress to the normal login which took ~5 min to get me to my desktop, no icons, no taskbar. Was able to get to task manager but when attempted to run explorer.exe manually or msconfig or regedit it just closes. The only thing I am able to perform from task manager is log off or restart the computer. I attempted windows repair from cd twice with no success, ran chkdsk from recovery console with no errors. Any ideas or help would be appreciated before I re install XP.

Try uninstalling the updates one at a time until you find the offending update, then reinstall the rest. One thought is seeing how you're using a ghost image, it might be the WGA tool

Hello Delkoo and welcome to Seven Forums.

You might try rebuilding your icon cache.

Icon Cache - Rebuild

Then take a look at customizing the notification area (old system tray.)

A:How to restore missing tray icon? Windows 7 Tray Icons Changer

Hello bageraz and welcome to Seven Forums.

I'd uninstall the Tray Icon Changer using the forced uninstall option from Revo Uninstaller (they have a 30 day free trial.) Hopefully this will also remove unwanted bits and pieces from the registry.

Revo Uninstaller Pro - Uninstall Software, Remove Programs easily, Forced Uninstall

Then I'd try running a system file checker scan from an elevated command prompt (option two) to see if any system files were damaged or corrupted by the TIC. If any problems are noted run the scan 3 times rebooting in between each scan.

SFC /SCANNOW Command - System File Checker

Hi,I hope someone here can help with this.
For some reason, the taskbar on my desktop has gone from being on the bottom,to going along the left side.I tried to drag it back, but the best I could do was to get along it on the top.Any ideas as to how I can get it back to the bottom?I tried dragging it all over the place, but it just won't go to the bottom.
It's running win 2000.Thanks.

A:Solved: Taskbar/system tray

Not sure if it's the same in Win2K, but won't hurt to try.

Right click on the taskbar and make sure "Lock The Taskbar" is unchecked, then just left click and hold on a blank area in the taskbar and drag it to the bottom, Lock it again when your done.

Hey Guys,

I'm not too sure if this may be possible. I've done a bit of "googling" but the key words always bring up "how to move the taskbar" but that is not what I want....

Basically my monitor has developed a small leak down on the bottom right, nothing major, it can wait until I've saved up to get a nice new one. For now though I can't see my tray notification and more importantly the clock. Is there anyway to move the sytem tray (including the clock) further towards thw middle so that I can see it?

XP has been around for years so I would have thought someone would have come up with a way!

Thanks

A:Move the system tray NOT the taskbar

It's built into the program to always be on the right of the taskbar when horizontal (top or bottom) and the bottom of the taskbar when vertical (left or right side).

Hey guys,

Lately my bottom right display on the task bar is disappearing. This includes the clock, and all system tray icons.

All I have to do is open the task bar properties and click OK and then it comes back. This does not happen after a reboot, it just happens suddenly for no reason, and a couple times a week.

Any explanation for this?
Thanks

Bear with my details as I fear this is not a common problem- I can t find it on Google I have been recently not sure what caused it having troubles with the taskbar and system tray in windows XP Pro Some time after a fresh reboot seems not to occur directly after a taskbar with tray XP Problems and Professional system reboot my windows on the taskbar don t respond correctly to my mouse clicks That is to say that for instance right now if I click on a different internet explorer window on the taskbar that window doesn t Problems with XP Professional taskbar and system tray come up in front of this window as in normally would Instead the taskbar section of that window changes Problems with XP Professional taskbar and system tray from its regular blue colour to the dark orange colour as it would if something in that window had changed in the background for example when you get a message on a MSN messenger window that is running in the background Alt-tabbing brings Problems with XP Professional taskbar and system tray up the window no problems and if I click the desired task times it comes up - once to turn colour twice to minimize it and the third time it pops up in the foreground This is quite ANNOYING The second issue is with the system tray Often times with any application it seeems when I right-click the sys tray icon the resulting menu stays there even after I click off of it- in the background or in other applications The only way to get rid of it is to select one of the menu options This is also very annoying I doubt it is any virus or spyware as I stay updated with those software My windows updates are complete I did need to get a fix for service pack as it crashed my system but its ok now I just updated my video driver from the windows site and thought it resolved the issue but it hasn t I can give details on programs running in background if needed but I try to minimize these If anyone has any idea what is going on I d be willing to try Seves nbsp

A:Problems with XP Professional taskbar and system tray

I have found the problem. It was my D-Link wireless card configuration utility. The other programs worked fine until my mouse hit the D-Link one. I have solved the problem by removing the program from the startup and am now using the Windows wireless network configuration. I tried to update the drivers from the D-Link website but I think the problem is with the utility program. All is good now.

What I'd like is for a program that normally appears in the system tray to show in the taskbar at all times it is running so i can easily see it and use the exit functions etc.
Specifically for Steam - (X) minimizes to system tray and hides activity in the task bar. I don't mind if this results in 2 icons showing (1 for an active window and 1 for the process) I know you can do the same from system tray for this particular program, but I just don't have the habit to look there for anything other than system background applications.

I'm running Windows 7 Professional x64 and am comfortable tinkering with registry and system files if needed.

So the questions are:
1/ Can a system tray icon be permanently moved to the taskbar applications area?
2/ If not, can a background process be assigned a taskbar icon when active?
Thanks in advance,
Eric

Whenever i right-click the system tray and go to properties, customize and then go to hide so the icon of a program is hidden always it keeps appearing after the next reboot. the icon goes away initially but after reboot it comes back shown instead of hidden. Even when i go to properties, customize and click to hide it. The description still says hide when inactive after i click to another icon but when i click to hide it it stays on hide in the description but as soon as i click another icon the description goes back to hide when inactive but yet works and is hidden untill i reboot and then when i go to customize, it says hide when inactive?

this is only a problem with zemana antilogger system tray icon it doesn't do this with any other program icons

A:system tray icons

Hello hello2007.
Is there an option in the software itself to disable the icon ?. Check under tools/options/preferences to see if it can be disabled.
As this is an anti-logger piece of software, it may be designed into the software to keep an icon in the system tray.
A lot of security software does this, to ensure that you know it is running.
Not much help i know, but at least you know its running.
Good luck and keep us posted.

Hi there everyone.

I seem to be having a problem with a 2 troublesome programs.

Advanced System Care Free 3.3.4 and Orbit Downloader 2.8.13 which are both the latest versions respectively.

I noticed this issue ever since I moved to Vista. Back in XP the two would simply run on startup with no flukes. This time, however, there are a few lapses. Let me explain.

1. Advanced System Care Free starts up most of the time but there are times that it just dosen't and the the tray icon is completely missing even when I start the application manually.

2. Orbit Downloader, no matter how many times I select the option for it to startup it simply refuses to do so.

Any suggestions?

Hello Oreo,

Double check to see if the notification icon may be set as hidden somehow.

You might see if placing a shortcut for the program in the Start Menu Start Up folder may allow it to run at startup for you instead.

Hope this helps,

I have noticed that I have several unwanted icons in my Notification Area (System Tray). Icons that appear to be malware. They are: WebCompanion.exe, wb.exe, pcm.exe, pccum.exe. These exe files and icons only appear in the system tray. Anti-virus and anti-malware report that the system is clean. They do not show up in a search or uninstall program. Deleting "IconStreams" and "PastIconStreams" in the registry did not remove the icons on reboot. Anybody have a clue??

After system restore, some icons on my system tray disappeared, including my Comodo firewall and my batterie's power management software. Now I know the processes are running. How do I get icons back to the tray? Thank you.

How do I go about doing this? I have been searching google for a while now and all the hits I get are about how to show/hide them or about changing icons for task bar, which is not what I'm talking about...

A:Changing .ico for system tray icons?

You will need a resource hacker of some kind so you can export/import the icons from the .dlls

For the Action Center flag are in the ActionCenter.dll

For the Network icon (the wireless and wired) are in pnidui.dll

For the Volume icon it is in SndVolSSO.dll

If you have a laptop the battery indicator is bitmaps instead of icons they are in batmeter.dll

You are showing you have 64-bit installed so the above .dlls will be in both C:\Windows\System32 and C:\Windows\SysWOW64

You should put copies of these .dlls on your desktop and modify them leaving the originals alone.

After you have your .dlls edited to properly change a system file you need to take ownership give yourself permission and rename the original .dlls and then copy in the new one, look at Post #6 of this thread will tell you how to do it Basic Networking Information

If you need more information or help let me know.

Hello,
We have a remote user with a Windows 7 Pro laptop and the icons are missing from the system tray. The clock is there but Volume, Network, Power, and Action Center are all missing. Everything seems to work, it's just that the shortcuts aren't there.
To connect to wifi, the user has to go into Control Panel and bring up Network and Sharing Center and he can connect that way.
I messed around with the "Select which icons and notifications appear on the taskbar" settings but nothing changed. Then I tried going to the "Turn system icons on or off". The Behavior is listed as On but they are greyed out and
can't be changed.
Is there a fix for this? I'm trying to avoid making the user ship the laptop in for reimaging.
Thanks.

Welcome to Seven Forums JOY6679. Do you run any cleaning or registry programs? Some can and will reset the icons. If you set them the way you like and restart, are they changed right away, or only after the PC is shut off and then restarted?

This has been bugging me for a while and I have become pretty fed up lately. Whenever I minimize a program to the system tray, it always has a chance that when I open the tray to double click the program, it will not show back up on the screen. In fact, I cannot right click it to close it either. I must go to task manager, kill the task, then go back and reopen the program while never minimizing a program.

I am running Windows 7 64bit on 6GB RAM, and Quad core processor. Is there a reason why this happens? If so, what can I do about it?

So I want to hide an icon that is showing in my system tray. It's not really necessary to be there, and there is no option to not show it there. This is for a launch manager on a laptop. I've gone to customize and changed it to "hide icons and notifications" for this particular program, but it still shows.... is there a way to get rid of this?

A:Hiding Icons In system tray

Is it for a bluetooth, wifi or what special function on what computer model? Did you hit Apply(if available) after changing on customize notification? Try using Mike Lin's StartupCPL and download the Standalone EXE Version (34 kb) and look for launch manager after launching certain application. Uncheck launch manager, Apply.

Hello

I wonder if anyone has come across this problem.

I recently installed a small UPnP program (TwonkyMedia) which I use to stream music to a player.

After the installation, most of the icons in the system tray just disappeared! These include icons like Google Calendar Sync and volume control icon, the icon used to eject the USB drive, for example. Most of the icons that disappeared are of programs in the Start Up folder.

Does anyone have any idea why this is happening? Although no icons, most of the programs seem to work fine. Google Calender Sync, for example, still works silently.

Thanks.

A:How do i change System Tray icons?

First thing I'd suggest is download and install Download IconViewer that way you can look at the icons from the property window there will be an icon tab.

SndVolSSO.dll For volume

pnidui.dll For network

batmeter.dll For the power on a laptop. These are bitmaps.

For a 32-bit system they will be in C:\Windows\System32

For a 64-bit system they will be in both C:\Windows\System32 and C:\Windows\SysWOW64

To properly change a system file you need to take ownership give yourself permission and rename the old file and then copy in the new one look at Post #6 of this thread will tell you how to do it Basic Networking Information

Some use msconfig but I don't. Start>Run>type in msconfig>Ok/Startup tab
----------
First right click on the icons in the system tray(or double left click to open)and try to access the "settings", "preferences" or "options" of each of the applications that you don't want to start when the computer boots up. There should be an option labeled "Start upon Windows Startup". Make sure that option is unchecked.
If there is no option, download and install
CodeStuff Starter to manage your startup programs
Launch the program and uncheck any program that you don't want to load/run at startup.
If you later change your mind, replace the checkmark.
It's very easy to search within the program too!
Right click on an entry>Search Internet>search engines & some sites below.

Hi, this is most likely caused by a windows update you will need to do some reg mods to fix this. I cannot replicate the problem so I want you to backup your registry settings before you do this (also create a restore point). Go to start search and type regedit open registry editor. Navigate to:-
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Classes\Local Settings\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\TrayNotify

Then in the right payne right click and delete:-
IconStream
PastIconStream

Do not reboot go to taskbar right click and select "task manager" under processes select explorer.exe and click on "end process" go back to task manager "applications" and select new task in the box type explorer.exe press OK . Now check the notification tray (properties and check what you want)

When I start my computer, everything is loaded correctly, but most icons meant to be loaded into the system tray don't appear. (not just hidden!) It is only the icon that isn't loaded, as the programs themselves are up and running.

The only way I can make them appear is to do a system restore to a previous date, but they disappear again the next time I turn on the computer. Also, the system restore says that nothing has been changed since I set the restore point. So I'm confused why that makes my icons load. But anyways, I'm hoping someone knows how to fix this permanently so I don't need to do a system restore everytime I want to use something like power management.

:D

Thanks so much for your time!!

My laptop is an Acer 5738Z with Windows 7 and NIS 2010.
Sometimes one or two of my system tray icons are missing on booting up.If I switch off and reboot, they magically reappear. The icons that should be there are:-
Battery.
Network.
Volume.
Norton.
I have them all ticked to show icon and notifications.
Does anyone else have this problem? Is it a bug in Windows 7 or is it a fault on my laptop?
I'd be grateful for any help and comments.

A:System tray icons sometimes missing.

Hello Citroen, and welcome to Seven Forums.

You might double check to make sure that you have them set to "Show icon and notifications". If you do, then resetting the notification icons may help.

Hope this helps,
Shawn

Hi,
There are some icons in my Windows system tray getting duplicated and the duplicated ones go away once I pass the cursor over them.

Is it a behavior of some kind of virus, a Windows bug or something else? It drives me crazy on how they happened! I really wanna help on this, thank you in advance.

I know this is a commonly asked question but the fixes I have found online so far have not worked for me. The problem is simple, my systray icons do not show up anymore but the clock does and I cannot access the 'hide inactive icons' check box that is in the properties area of the tray because it is grayed out.

Thanks in advance to anyone who can help out.

I set "Always show all icons and notifications on the taskbar", but the icons have spaces only.

How can I solve this problem?

A:system tray icons problem

Try placing the arrow over the icon you want on the taskbar....Then right click.

In my context menu I see "Pin to taskbar" seventh item down, yours may differ....Click on that.

Recently I have had a small problem with the System Tray in Windows XP. Usually there are 5,6 Programm that I have set up for running at start up and their icons show up on the System Tray everytime I start the computer . But now some of the Icons do not show up anymore, the programms still run at start up ( I can easily check it out by showing the task manager and the names of the programms stay still on the list) but their icons have disappeared. The icon of volume control is also disappered although I have enabled it in the control panel. It resulted in many unconvenient things for me because some progamms only work through their icons on the system tray. Can anyone here help me to solve out this problem ?
Thanks in advance !

A:Icons on System Tray disappear ??

Try deleting the history of these icon streams.

Navigate to the key:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\TrayNotify

Then, DELETE the IconStreams and PastIconsStream entries.

Windows will rebuild the IconStreams on the first reboot and the
PastIconsStream on the second reboot. All I can tell you is I had the
same problem with intermittent missing notification tray icons and
that problem was permanently solved using the above procedure. Please
observe standard practices when editing the registry.

My Win 7 64 bit computer currently shows 2 identical icons in the lower right system tray for the weekly microsoft/windows updates that are available. Previously, whenever an update was availabe an icon would show. This week there are 2 identical icons. My updater is set to notify me when updates are available but not to download or install them. I have downloaded and installed all the critical updates this week. The icons currently still being displayed only relate to optional updates that I do not want to install currently.

Why are there 2 icons? And, how do I eliminate one without installing the optional updates?

A:Two Identical System Tray Icons

Hello poolmon

This is usually just caused by the system tray icons messing up which happens from time to time. This should solve your issue - Notification Area Icons - Reset

Hi all!

I was trying to solve a problem regarding display window sizing and made a change, which I can't specifically remember, in Control Panel>display>performance. I chose maximum performance instead of best graphics or something. Computer speed went up considerably.

But, I now have flickering in my System Tray icons every 20 seconds. Checking Windows Taskbar CPU useage the normal useage while connected to net is about 6%-15% Cpu useage. Every 20 seconds at icon flickering the CPU spikes to 35%-45% useage.

Not all icons affected, only O/S Firewall Status, O/A program icon, Windows Security icon, Clock icon and Start button flicker.

HPDigital Imaging Monitor icon, Avira AV icon, System Sound icon & Device Mgr.-uninstall HP printer icon stay constant & don't flicker.

I much prefer the improved performance but don't want to break something, just hate that sound of kilobytes crashing into each other.

Any help appreciated, thanks!

Hi,

Is it possible to remove a program's tray icon and still keep the program running? not hide but completely remove. Im trying to remove Steam's icon because I dont want my account to be visible but still keep the games available. Steam doesnt have an option for this, could it be done another way?

A:Removing system tray icons

Well if this helps you:

Windows key + r and run "msconfig". Go to the startup tab and uncheck Steam. That will not load your icon and you will not see it ever again until you load Steam. I think you should stick with hiding it because if you hide it, it still doesn't show your account regardless, right? I'm not a big steam fan so I'm not 100% sure as to how it works.

Hi all,

Im trying to change the system tray icons in windows 7 home premium but it doesnt work. I tried it with a program called PS Tray Factory and it crashed my explorer.exe. Seems like its not compatible to windows 7 yet.

Anyone know of another way to change them?

A:Changing system tray icons.

You can take ownership (Take Ownership Shortcut ) of the appropriate dll files that generates the system Trey icons, and then back them up (for restoration of the originals , if needed) and replace them with the modified ones.

For example, SndVolSSO.dll for system trey sound icon, ActionCenter.dll for action center icon ,etc. they are situated in C:\Windows\System32

In deviantart.com, you may have a lot of nice system trey icons

On my XPS 15 (L502X) I'd like to widen the day and date area so that the day and date fit on one line. For instance, for today, I'd like it to display "Friday/09/16/2016." I have made this change in settings, and when I hover the mouse over that area, the display is correct. But because the display area isn't wide enough, it otherwise shows only the time. This works fine on my desktop PC--plenty of room there. I don't want to increase the taskbar height. I want only to widen the day/time/date area to accommodate the day and date on one line. So how do I widen the day and date area on my laptop? Thanks.

I have been noticing a strange problem with my Win bit It does not happen every day maybe once a week or so When I boot up the system and the desktop loads I noticed that all of my security AVG ZA SpyBot etc program icons in the system tray notification area next to the clock don't load I get the network power volume icons but nothing else tray notification showing.. System not icons I should see icons for my security and other start up programs I have loaded but they don't show I have to reboot the system three or four times before the tray icons will show The system works fine otherwise The security programs run fine when they are loaded so they are not the problem System tray notification icons not showing.. I tried a Google search for this problem and came up with this possible solution System icons do not appear in the notification area in Windows Vista or in Windows until you restart the computer However this seems to only apply to the volume power network System tray notification icons not showing.. icons and not my program icons I also found this but it is for Win xp Systray icons missing Windows Problem Solver I don't really know if any of those quot fixes quot can apply to Win Like I said the problem of quot missing system tray icons quot only happens once a week or so YES I DO System tray notification icons not showing.. have notification set to ON That is the first place I looked So that is not the problem Has anyone else seen this happen in Win If it is a program fault by Microsoft is there a solution Thanks for your help Scott

Loptop computer, an Acer Aspire 5003WLCi running Windows XP Home.

Today, I noticed two icons that are normally in the system tray are gone. They are the blue battery icon for the laptop battery status, and the Windows volume control speaker icon.

Yes, I opened the "Power Options" icon in Windows Control Panel, and under "Power Options Properties/Advanced, the checkbox "Always show icon on the taskbar" is checked. Yet the icon will not show.

Same thing for the Windows volume control icon, in Control Panel, I clicked "Sounds and Audio Devices", and on the "Volume" tab, I have checked "Place volume icon in the taskbar", but there's no icon. They were both there yesterday, and I didn't knowlingly change any settings.
