I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/directdownload.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

As the topic says, I can't disable DEP for explorer. I went to my computer, properties, advanced, performance advanced, DEP. I disabled it for explorer and it tells me I may need to restart my computer. It still runs it, so I figure I need to restart. I do and it closes again. I go to the DEP and see that it was re-enabled. Is this a known issue? If so, can someone help me with it? If not, can someone still help me with it?

Hi bolitho!

Could you go into some more detail for us please? Can you tell us what version of Vista you are using? Can you tell me what program you are using to download with? Can you tell me the last thing you downloaded?

There are a lot of variables here, and before we can give you an answer that works, we have to know as much as possible.

Thanks!

I currently have a program which runs continuously on another computer. Every now and then, DEP will block the execution of this program while it is running and the inflow of tasks to be processed will continually pile up. If I'm monitoring that computer, I can just close the DEP message and continue running it without a problem but if I'm away from that computer, I'll have a large and almost never ending bottle neck if the DEP pops up. I've tried turning off the DEP through the my computer -> properties method already and yet it still runs from time to time when i execute this task.

I would thus like to receive an email (when i'm using another computer) when the DEP runs. Is there anyway or any .vbs or .bat scripts that let me do that?

Oddly enough, we were able to resolve the issue simple by changing his view preferences from icon over to list. Well, it is Windows Explorer that DEP warned about, so you have no choice as to whether or not to run it again - Windows Explorer runs every time you log in.

It is probably another exe that caused the DEP in Windows Explorer. If you did try to run a program just before the DEP message appeared, then I would question that exe. If you have doubts about a program, upload it to VirusTotal.com and let their 39 antivirus programs give it a scan.

A:Data execution prevention

DEP - Enable or Disable
it does not affect your computer speed...
it just marks part of memory by as no execute....

if a programs tries to access this memory then its shutdown...

Data Execution Prevention (DEP) is a security feature that can help prevent damage to your computer from viruses and other security threats. Harmful programs can try to attack Windows by attempting to run (also known as execute) code from system memory (RAM) locations reserved only for Windows and other authorized programs. These types of attacks can harm your programs and files. If DEP notices a program on your computer using memory incorrectly, it closes the program and notifies you with the DEP stop error. DEP is ran in a software mode and in a hardware mode. If your processor supports DEP (NX for AMD, and XD for Intel), then you will have hardware and software DEP. If it doesn't, then Vista will just use software DEP. 64 bit applications will have DEP enabled all the time by default, but 32 bit applications do not and must have DEP manually enabled for them. For more information, see: Windows Help and Support: Data Execution Prevention: FAQs NOTE
If a program is being closed by DEP, then make sure that it is a DEP compatible version and check for an updated version. If it is not DEP compatible, then you can uninstall the program or turn off DEP for that particular program. See: How to Turn DEP On or Off for a Program

WARNING
Do not disable DEP, or exclude (OptOut) a program, unless you have adequate protection and are having problems only with a known safe program that DEP will not let run and you cannot live without it. Remember DEP stopped the program for a reason. Either it is just a improperly running program, or some sort of malware trying to get into restricted memory.

Adequate Protection:
Antivirus program with realtime scanning (EX: Avast or AVG are good ones)A spyware/adware program with realtime scanning (EX: Windows Defender, Spybot Search and Destroy)Enable Vista's UAC (User Account Control). It asks you for permission first for anything that wants to run with full access to the computer.

A:Ie7 And Data Execution Prevention

I've had nothing but problems with IE7 and Vista. Read some of my problems with red x's and IE7. Microsoft knows there is a problem but has done nothing to fix the problem.

With that said you might try something I did that seemed to correct my problems with IE7 and has bothered a lot of people. I would suggest going to help-typing in "turn off UAC" and following the directions. You can always turn it back on but that might just help you correct your problem for the short term. I have mine turned off and finally IE7 is behaving like it is supposed to.

One suggestion-As soon as you can, I would upgrade your Vista Basic to Vista Home Premium. Not much of a difference in cost but feature wise it is well worth it. Check to see if you have the minimum requirements to run Home Premium. You will be glad that you made the change. I have read that Wal Mart has made a deal with Microsoft (and I guess some of the computer manufacturers) not to sell Vista Basic in their stores.

Good luck and post back on how you are doing.

p.s. If it doesn't help, turn UAC back on.

Also, try to do a system restore back to when it was working properly. You didn't mention how long you have had the Dell but if it is under waranty I would call Dell.

Are you using IE to access the discussion forum? There is another DEP setting in IE7. Go to Tools > Internet Options > Advanced > Scroll down to Security > Enable Memory Protection .. Uncheck that. On Vista, you have to right click IE and Run as Administrator in order to change it, otherwise that option is greyed out.

I am so irritated by this stupid program. I have disabled DEP, I disabled PAE which supposedly was a sure-fire way to eliminate DEP - and I still have programs coming up as stopped from execution by DEP! How can I permanently eliminate this annoying thing so it doesn't trouble me anymore? I run Vista Home Premium x64. DEP has never once stopped a virus, but it is constantly stopping programs I want to run.

Why am I getting a pop up by the notification area telling me that everytime I shut down iTunes? This is on my Vista laptop. I click it

A:What is Data Execution Prevention?

It what protect your files. It is what I was trying to tell you about. With the shock player in Vista. You can change the settings in it to allow your Itunes. This is why it it is throwing a error at you now. I don't really remember how. But if you read the help file there it may explain to you how to do it. This program here is what was vista downfall . Sense Vista though in 7 and up it has changed.

Explaining my problem is sort of a long story, so I'm including what I think is most relivant.

Back in May, my 2002 dell with windows xp finally ceased to live and I purchased a new gateway hard drive. Everything worked amazingly for a while until suddenly every time I tried to open a link I would get a DEP error message.

Being fairly computer savy, I clicked on the annoying little message that pops up and followed the steps exactly. I went to settings changed it to turn on except for programs I select and added the IE.exe I've done this dozens of times but still nothing has changed.

Can someone please help me fix this?

A:Data Execution Prevention

Hi, the problem is not with DEP it's with IE so undo all that you have done in DEP. Then go to IE tools internet options advanced and "reset" IE. This should reregister relevant dll's, if you like you can do this manually, the manual way is much more thorough so is recommended.

Copy and paste ALL of the below into notepad then from notepad menu select "file" then "save as" in the save as window save this as IEFix.bat and save to desktop. Double click on the file to run (be patient it takes time if it hangs then close out and do it again). Reboot for the changes to take effect.

Hi, I have a customer's site where in the last two days, five of the PCs are giving Data Execution Prevention error messages. "To help protect your computer, Windows has closed this program. Windows Explorer."
These are all Windows XP machines, with SP2 : have not installed SP3. These PCs have all been running fine for a year or two. No new tasks recently. I have googled and searched forums, but cannot find anything that seems to give a good answer. All affected PCs are running Sophos. There are many more PCs in this location which are not affected. I have run Spybot S&D, but this doesn't find anything I think is relevant.
I am suspecting some new virus, but am not finding any other reports of something like this in the last few days.
Does anyone have any good ideas ?

While Windows Live One Care was doing a virus scan on my Vista Home Premium system (Dell Inspiron 1501 laptop), I attempted to connect to the Internet. IE7 closed itself due to Data Execution Prevention. It was working earlier, and the only thing that I could determine had changed was One Care's optimization. I contacted One Care via live chat they recommended I clean up temp files and unload browser add-ons. It fixed the problem. When attempting to reload the Google Toolbar add-on, the problem resurfaced. I've grown somewhat attached to the Google Toolbar, but I'm more interested to know what the true source of the problem is than I am about getting the toolbar back.

Anybody got any suggestions?

Hi and welcome,

If you still need help please post the logs from this app:

Download Deckard's System Scanner to your Desktop.:

http://www.techsupportforum.com/sect...eckard/dss.exe
http://deckard.geekstogo.com/dss.exe

Close all applications and windows.
Double-click on dss.exe to run it, and follow the prompts.
When the scan is complete, a text file will open - Main.txt
Copy (Ctrl+A then Ctrl+C) and paste (Ctrl+V) the contents of Main.txt here.
A folder, C:\Deckard\System Scanner, will also open. In it will be another text file, Extra.txt.
Please attach Extra.txt to your post.

Note: some firewalls may warn that sigcheck.exe is trying to access the internet - please ensure that you allow sigcheck.exe permission to do so.

To attach a file to a new post, simply
Click the[Manage Attachments] button under Additional Options > Attach Files on the post composition page, and
copy and paste the following into the "Upload File from your Computer" box:

C:\Deckard\System Scanner\Extra.txt

Click Upload.

What DSS will do:
--create a new System Restore point in Windows XP and Vista.
--clean your Temporary Files, Downloaded Program Files, and Internet Cache Files, and also empty the Recycle Bin on all drives.
--check some important areas of your system and produce a report for your analyst to review.
--System Scanner automatically runs HijackThis for you, but it will also install and place a shortcut to HijackThis on your desktop if you do not already have HijackThis installed.

Let me know if anything has changed.

Thanks :)

ps. Regarding registry cleaners:
I don't recommend using registry cleaners.
Then can and have been dangerous.
Many don't make proper backups and the backups they do make are totally useless if you can't boot if it "fixed" something it should not have.
Unless one can go through each & every entry flagged as bad/corrupted & understand exactly why then pick out the ones that should be fixed... (most people can't) I don't recommend it.

I speak from experience cus I lost 2 machines from reg cleaners and I consider myself well versed in the windows registry.

Two things to try.

1. After you changed the settings in Control Panel, did you exit and re-run the program?

2. Maybe try reinstalling the program?

Hi
I was just surfing the web normally, on my Vista machine, when all of a sudden an error came up saying that windows has encountered an error and will restart in one minute. When i click OK on that, i get a little popup from the taskmanager, saying something about Data Execution Prevention. I didnt have time to read it, because vista restarted.
After the reboot, it takes me to the login screen, saying Please Wait for about a minute and then reboots again.
Now, however, it has decided to go directly to a black screen, without even showing the Please Wait sign. So now, i have a PC that boots into a black screen and stays like that until further notice from me

The good news is that i can still login through safe mode.

Can anyone please help??

Best Regards,
Yarob

A:Data Execution Prevention

Have you tried a System Restore while in SafeMode to a point just prior to the sudden event? If it restores ok but doesn't help the problem, another cause of a sudden event like that and still woking in safe mode is a hardware problem. Or, maybe an attack by some malware trying to get on the system, which I don't have any experience with so am just speculating about since I've never seen or heard of Windows rebooting because of a DEP event.

ok this just started happening, i recently installed pinacle studio and daemon tools before it started to happen (i dont think either are the culprit)

when i go to open a video in windows explorer i get a data execution prevention window, says it has to close W.E. and then W.E. goes bye bye, thing is it was happening to the videos in one folder then stopped, and i went into another folder to play a video and its doing it to them...

im no idiot, but i dont know *** the problem is, free of viruses and spyware according to my scan...

and no its not porn videos its anime (not hentai either you perverts), so dont even start

I've been having a window pop-up every hour or half-hour that says Windows Explorer is being closed to help protect my computer. It tells me that it's Data Execution Prevention. It will close explorer and then bring it back within a few seconds...none of my other programs close, but it's a nuisance. It will bring me out of other programs and slows me down a lot. I tried running chkdsk, but that didn't help. It only started just recently.

I'm running Windows XP home edition.

Hello dark messenger and welcome to the BC HijackThis forum. Let's start out with 2 things. We need to make sure all hidden files are showing so please:Click Start.Open My Computer.Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.Select the View tab.Under the Hidden files and folders heading select Show hidden files and folders.Uncheck the Hide file extensions for known types option.Uncheck the Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option.Click Yes to confirm.Click OK.Now perform a search for these files and delete all instances. Windows XP's search feature is a little different. When you click on 'All files and folders' on the left pane, click on the 'More advanced options' at the bottom. Make sure that Search system folders, Search hidden files and folders, and Search subfolders are checked.wmimgr32.exeGo to the Jotti's malware scan page and use the buttons at the top of the page to browse to the above file and submit it for a scan.Several scanning engines will be used to check the file for any threats. Please post the results of the scans back here.Next, update Ewido and then close the program.Start in Safe Mode Using the F8 method:Restart the computer. As soon as the BIOS is loaded begin tapping the F8 key until the boot menu appears.Use the arrow keys to select the Safe Mode menu item.Press the Enter key.Start ewido and do the following:Click on the Scanner button.Click on the Complete System Scan.If anything is found you will be prompted to clean the first infected file found. Choose Clean and put a checkmark in the checkbox for Perform action on all infections and click the Ok button to continue the scan. When the scan is complete close ewido and reboot the computer normally.Post back the information from Jotti, the Ewido log file and a new HijackThis log and I will review the information when it comes in.Cheers.OT

Hi

I had to reinstall Windows XP Pro with SP2 in an office and every 5 minutes explorer crashes.

Data Execution Prevention
To help protect your computer, Windows has closed this program.

Any idea why this keeps happening ?

Apparently this doesnt happen when working on other software like Tally, Office etc etc. Happens when on desktop, browsing explorer, network neighbourhood.

Thanks

A:Data Execution Prevention

Have you updated the installation? If you cant browse the web to get to windowsupdate.com or something try going to Control Panel -> System -> Advanced - then in the performance section click Properties - goto the Data execution Prevention tab and turn it off.

Whilst DEP is off however some programs will not work so hopefully after updating set it back on and it should be right.

Between now and when an expert comes along, I'll tell you what I would do. I'm not an expert, just a semi-skilled user.

Boot into safe mode and scan it with your spyware and antivirus programs. Then reboot into safe mode again and try a restore point from before the problems started.

I would try other things on mine, but I think it would be unwise for me to advise it to you. I hope that helps. It shouldn't hurt.

A:data execution prevention

Hi Sydoz, and welcome to Vista Forums.

It sounds like DEP is disabled. Check using this tutorial to make sure that it is enabled again.

DEP - Enable or Disable

For the other problem, you might check in Windows Features to see if Spider Solitiare and others you wanted are checked (dotted) under Games.

I may have finally resolved a problem I've had with a program but changing DEP to protect only essential programs and not all programs. I tried it with all programs and inserted the wayward program as an exception but it didn't help. Once I changed it to essentials only, the program is finally working as expected.

What am I at risk for and are there other ways to protect myself? I use a hard router so shouldn't that act as a firewall?

Thanks,
Burt

A:Data Execution Prevention (DEP)

The main concern here would be virus infection, not so much hacking.
Just use a active antivirus to try and offset the difference.
Essentials still covers base system files though.

I had DEP enabled in my Bios setup, but have just had my OS reinstalled (Vista Home Premium 32 bit) and now cannot find DEP mentioned by that name in the Bios settings. There is reference to "No-Execute Memory Protection"-is that DEP by another name, and if so do you agree it is a good idea to enable it?

Your advice would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks and regards,
Roy Whitethread

A:Data Execution Prevention

Hello Roy,

Yes, that's just another name for DEP in the BIOS.

I think it would be a good idea to have DEP enabled to help prevent malware from getting into restricted memory. You might also consider enabling DEP inside Vista also.

Hope this helps,
Shawn

Data execution involving some software by ULEAD and DEP I recently got an 'easyCAP' dongle for capturing video from a composite source I installed the device and tweaked Data execution prevention.... its settings till I got it to work I play a bit of online poker and Data execution prevention.... use 'PKR' when I run the app the program it now crashes and tells me DEP closed it It's always been fine till I installed ULEAD If I try and exclude PKR it won't allow me and says the app won't run without dep enabled So into msconfig disabled the ulead associated service s at startup and try again no avail I uninstalled the video software and deleted its reg keys and it still didn't work So I done a system restore as a last resort and all is well now To confirm the problem was related Data execution prevention.... to this software I re-installed it and got the same result and done it all again Would anyone out there have any idea WHY some video capture software would prevent PKR executing And a possible work-around

I have a similar problem in that DEP won't let me run my nvidia control panel and adjust the settings on my video card. I try to tell DEP to monitor all programs but this one, and it tells me it won't let me do that. I dislike programs that act like that. Intensely dislike.

DEP may be a good idea, but I don't think so in this instance.

I have AVG paid anti-virus and I scan with Malwarebytes and Ad-Aware regularly.

I tried to capture analog video from a camcorder by means of the Pinnacle Studio 9.4 program in .avi format and I've got the DEP window of the win xp sp2 when I tried to manipulate the created .avi file. The media player played it normally after double clicking on it but Nero couldn't load it in order to write it on a dvd. Why this happened and why I couldn't delete it till I used the delete command from the dos window? The Power Director Pro also created some problems in the process of doing the same task and I got restarted (blue screen) after tried to open the program with error 1003 which used to come a few months earlier when I had problems with the nvidia display drivers (sw).
When I close these programs I get error messages I don't remember right now.

A:Data Execution Prevention Popup

Nothing much here...we'll just fix some minor issues there and then deal with the DEP popup in the end.

Run a scan in HijackThis. Check each of the following if they still exist and hit 'Fix Checked' after you checked the last one:

O1 - Hosts: 216.93.168.167 auto.search.msn.com
O1 - Hosts: 216.93.168.167 sitefinder.verisign.com
O1 - Hosts: comments (such as these) may be inserted on individual
O2 - BHO: MyWebSearch Search Assistant BHO - {00A6FAF1-072E-44cf-8957-5838F569A31D} - C:\Program Files\MyWebSearch\SrchAstt\1.bin\MWSSRCAS.DLL
O16 - DPF: {41F17733-B041-4099-A042-B518BB6A408C} - http://a1540.g.akamai.net/7/1540/52/...eInstaller.exe
O16 - DPF: {AB29A544-D6B4-4E36-A1F8-D3E34FC7B00A} - http://www.wildtangent.com/install/w...bad/wtinst.cab

Uninstall MyWebSearch via the Add/Remove panel.

Delete this folder if found:

C:\Program Files\MyWebSearch\

One of these methods should fix the Dr. Watson problem:

1. Go to My Computer->Tools->Folder Option->View and check 'Show hidden files and folders' and uncheck 'Hide protected operating system files'. Go to your c: drive. Right click on the boot.ini file and go to Properties. Then double click on the boot.ini file to open it. Change the line that says /NoExecute=OptIn and change it to /NoExecute=AlwaysOff. Now save the file and close it.

2. Right click My Computer and select Properties. Go to Advanced tab->Startup and Recovery and click Settings. Click the drop-down box next to 'Write debugging information' and select none.

3. Go to Start->Run and type in regedit and hit OK. Go to File->Export and save the registry somewhere as a backup. Go back to the Registry Editor and navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\WindowsNT\CurrentVersion\AeDebug. Double click on 'Auto' (in the right pane) and modify the value to 0.

Your log is clean.

To help prevent future spyware infections, read the Anti-Spyware Tutorial and use the tools provided.

Are there any problems now? If not, you should be set to go.

A:Data Execution Prevention Error

You may want to run a virus/malware scan, first off. http://www.kaspersky.com/virusscannerIn the meantime, you can add an exception for Explorer.exe in Data Execution Prevention.1. Click Start, click Run, type sysdm.cpl, and then click OK.2. Click the Advanced tab, click Performance, and then click Settings.3. In Performance Options, click the Data Execution Prevention tab, and then click Add.4. In the Open dialog box, locate and then click the program. (should be C:\Windows\explorer.exe)5. Click Open, click Apply, and then click OK. When you are prompted to restart your computer, click OK.

It seems like, quite often when I open up a disk to use its content... As in, via my computer, that an error says Data Execution Prevention prevented some script from being ran. Anyways, My Computer freezes and I'll have to close it via task manager.

I am wondering if this is an error caused by viruses. But I've done a NOD32 scan as well as housecall scan and it shows up nothing.

A:Data Execution Prevention? Whats That?

Are you using XP?Please run this scan and see if it sees something. If running Vista then Run As Administrator. Please download Malwarebytes Anti-Malware and save it to your desktop.alternate download link 1alternate download link 2Make sure you are connected to the Internet.Double-click on Download_mbam-setup.exe to install the application. When the installation begins, follow the prompts and do not make any changes to default settings. When installation has finished, make sure you leave both of these checked:Update Malwarebytes' Anti-MalwareLaunch Malwarebytes' Anti-MalwareThen click Finish.MBAM will automatically start and you will be asked to update the program before performing a scan. If an update is found, the program will automatically update itself. Press the OK button to close that box and continue. If you encounter any problems while downloading the updates, manually download them from here and just double-click on mbam-rules.exe to install. On the Scanner tab:Make sure the "Perform Quick Scan" option is selected. Then click on the Scan button. If asked to select the drives to scan, leave all the drives selected and click on the Start Scan button. The scan will begin and "Scan in progress" will show at the top. It may take some time to complete so please be patient. When the scan is finished, a message box will say "The scan completed successfully. Click 'Show Results' to display all objects found".Click OK to close the message box and continue with the removal process.Back at the main Scanner screen, click on the Show Results button to see a list of any malware that was found.Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected. When removal is completed, a log report will open in Notepad and you may be prompted to restart your computer. (see Note below)The log is automatically saved and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.Copy and paste the contents of that report in your next reply and exit MBAM.Note: If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be presented with 1 of 2 prompts. Click OK to either and let MBAM proceed with the disinfection process. If asked to restart the computer, please do so immediately. Failure to reboot will prevent MBAM from removing all the malware.

Hi all looking for a spot of help reference a message box that pops up when viewing some not all photo's on the computer The message I get is pasted Prevention problems..?? Data Execution below and it basically closes the program that has the photo's in it Any help appreciated Data Execution Prevention DEP helps prevent damage from viruses and other security threats that attack by running executing malicious code from memory locations that only Windows and other programs should use This type of threat causes damage by taking over one or more memory locations in use by a program Then it spreads and harms other programs files and even your e-mail contacts Unlike a firewall or antivirus program DEP does not help prevent harmful programs from being installed on your computer Instead it monitors your programs to determine if they use system memory safely To do this DEP software works alone or with compatible microprocessors to mark some memory locations as quot non-executable quot If a program tries to run code malicious or not from a protected location DEP closes the program and notifies you DEP can take advantage of software and hardware support To use DEP your computer must be running Microsoft Windows XP Service Pack SP or later or Windows Server Service Pack or later DEP software alone helps protect against certain types of malicious code attacks but to take full advantage of the protection that DEP can offer your processor must support quot execution Data Execution Prevention problems..?? protection quot This is a hardware-based technology designed to mark memory locations as non-executable If your processor does not support hardware-based DEP it's a good idea to upgrade to a processor that offers execution protection features

I have Vista Home Premium and Microsoft Works Suite 2002 for XP loaded. Some of the programs in Suite 2002 work and some don't, they open and then a Data Execution Prevention error displays and it close the window. I have turned off the System setting DEP for those programs as the windows help suggested, but it still comes up with the DEP error when I try to open those programs. I assume it is because my software CD is for Windows XP, any solutions out there to make it work with Vista?

I can't open a installasion, it closes change or remove programs, it closes most of the stuff!! Even it's own settings!!! So I'm asking if I can delete the DEP. Can I?

A:Data Execution Prevention Stinks

First make sure you are installing known good software (not something questionable).

You can disable DEP for the software you are installing by going to System Properties > Advanced tab > Performance settings button > Data Execution Prevention tab > tick the button for Turn on DEP for all programs and services except for those I select. Then Add the program you are having trouble with.

You can also completely disable DEP for all programs by editing the boot.ini file (C:\boot.ini) by changing /NOEXECUTE=OPTIN to /NOEXECUTE=ALWAYSOFF. You must reboot for the change to take effect.

I need help on DEP(Data Execution Prevention). I just recently have this problem on one particular folder. When ever I try to open it, I get a DEP error message and it freezes up for maybe 15 to 20 seconds. Then it closes that particular folder. I use to be able to open this file just fine.

Hi--I wonder if anyone has any ideas on this...

I have just recently begun to get DEP error messages on my XP SP3 machine.

When that happens, google desktop search (which I have running as a deskbar) always crashes and must be manually restarted.

So I'm assuming it is a Google desktop related problem although that may not be accurate. I did a full scan of my system with AVG Grisoft just to be sure and it came up negative. Grisoft AVG and firewall has been running continuously as well.

Two questions. Is the error message I'm getting a false one relating to some issue with Google? If so, how do I stop getting DEP to crash google desktop?

I suddenly started having a problem tonight with my PC. Everytime I try to go into a specific media area of My Documents I am getting a Data Execution Prevention error. So after some research I disabled the DEP function with these instructions: http://www.zensoftware.co.uk/kb/article.aspx?id=10002

This stopped the DEP message, but now I am getting a "Windows Explorer has encountered a problem and needs to close" error. This, of course, forces a shutdown of the folder the same way the DEP problem did. I think I know which files are causing the problem, but I can't get into the folder to delete them. Is there any way to fix this?

I also ran sfc /scannow but am still getting the Windows Explorer Error and cannot get into the folder.

Anyone's expert opinion(s) would be greatly appreciated! Thank you!

Some time back I had enabled hardware DEP Data working Prevention (DEP) not Execution on my laptop which runs XP SP and has a Core Duo T processor This was working properly as confirmed by the Data Execution Prevention section of Performance Options as well as by running NXTEST If I run NXTEST now it tells me that DEP is not active Also if I run some applications that used to crash unless they were in the DEP exclude list they no longer crash Windows both in the Performance Options as well as in the procedure outlined in http support microsoft com kb tells me hardware-enforced DEP is active If just for testing purposes I disable DEP in my BIOS Windows appropriately tells me that my processor does not support hardware DEP so obviously Windows recognizes that quot everything is OK quot for hardware DEP to function properly I have NoExecute optout in my BOOT INI file and quot Turn on DEP for all programs and services except those that I select quot selected in Performance Options After restoring my system from several old backups I ve determined that the problem started between June and August I Data Execution Prevention (DEP) not working reinstalled all relevant applications on top of my June Data Execution Prevention (DEP) not working system but DEP still works so I must conclude that the problem is caused by some Windows IE Office update that had been applied I m not in a position to reapply the updates in the order they had been previously applied so I m not able to identify the culprit Can anybody out there who has an up-to-date Windows Office IE and hardware DEP enabled try to run NXTEST and see what it says please Thanks nbsp

Hi all

I`m using a HP Pavilion dv6000 laptop. Recently, I keep getting blue screen of deaths with the error stating "Memory management".

Next, when I start up my laptop, all my programs closed under the name of "Data Execution Prevention".

Windows sidebar, MSN Messenger, Wifi, all kind of stuff closed in the name of "Data Execution Prevention" by itself. Even task manager, when I tried to open it, it tells me that too.

My firefox also crashes and reboots everytime I try to use it.

Is there any advice anyone can give or help me with my problem?

Thanks

Hi Im sure Execution Prevention me Data driving mad.. Ive asked this question in the past and dont think I managed to fix the problem I have just transfered photos from my camera to the pc which are automatically stored in an Adobe folder and a sub folder is created in quot My Pictures quot When I open quot My Pictures quot and open the new folder titled Adobe as it happens then open the new picture folder I get a message telling me the program has Data Execution Prevention driving me mad.. to close due to a Data Data Execution Prevention driving me mad.. Execution Prevention problem This is so so annoying and I cant find an easy way to remedy the problem Any help on this matter would be greatly appreciated as its driving me nuts Thank you in advance Rich PS below is part of the DEP write-up Data Execution Prevention DEP helps prevent damage from viruses and other security threats that attack by running executing malicious code from memory locations that only Windows and other programs should use This type of threat causes damage by taking over one or more memory locations in use by a program Then it spreads and harms other programs files and even your e-mail contacts Unlike a firewall or antivirus program DEP does not help prevent harmful programs from being installed on your computer Instead it monitors your programs to determine if they use system memory safely To do this DEP software works alone or with compatible microprocessors to mark some memory locations as quot non-executable quot If a program tries to run code malicious or not from a protected location DEP closes the program and notifies you

I have DEP turned off I hate DEP

here's how to do it
Total Disabling DEP on Vista (Not recommended)
NB: You must open a CMD window as an administrator, like this:

1. Navigate to "All Programs" and "Accessories"

2. Right-click on the icon "Command Prompt"

3. Click "Properties" tab and in the "Shortcuts" where you normally are, click "Advanced"

4. Check "Run as Administrator" and confirm with 'OK'

5. Now that you have administrator rights on the CMD can be applied afterwards.

6. Navigate to "All Programs" and "Accessories"

7. Click on "Command Prompt"

8. Paste this to later in the prompt window:

Quote:
bcdedit.exe /set {current} nx AlwaysOff

Hello everyone. My computer continually decides to send out the message that "Windows has encountered a problem, and has to shutdown." I read from the "info about this" in the announcement of the problem that it is the DEP (Data Execution Prevention) that is doing this. I've tried to shut it down, but the computer warned me that I can't shut it down, or my computer will be vulnerable to virus infection. WHAT DO I DO???? I'll be in the middle of working in MY PICTURES, and it will shut down... frustrated.
