Cannot make a new Windows 7 user account (password problem)

Q: Cannot make a new Windows 7 user account (password problem)

i can't finish the setup process. i'm trying to create a "standard" account, but when i go to create a password for it, no matter how many characters and no matter how complex (uppercase, lowercase, numbers, etc) it will absolutely not accept anything as a password (and i am copying/pasting the password from notepad, so it is being typed correctly).

i checked all the secpol 'password policies', and there don't seem to be any interfering requirements.

i attached a screenshot, if it helps.

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

My grandmother was recently hacked and she changed all her passwords herself (yay!). However she did not write down her new local user account password for her laptop.

I tried downloading OPHCrack, I burned it as an ISO file and put it on a DVD-R(only thing I had on hand) and i changed the boot order on her BIOS menu to had the DVD drive as the first priority. It does not run....I hear the disk drive moving, or spinning but the program does not run. Are there any other options or do I have to do a complete system restore to bypass this? Also if that is what I have to do how do I do that without being in her control panel?

Hi. As if everybody else's password problems weren't bad enough...

My XP got badly currupted, so I moved the hard drive to a healthy computer so I could save my documents before rebuilding. The problem is that the user account folders, containing everything I want to save, are locked, and I can't get a prompt for the passwords (I know them) because this is now an E drive and the OS on it isn't doing anything.

Thank you for any help you might be able to give!

I'm running 8.1 on a laptop and a desktop. I have admin accounts setup on both, associated with my primary windows/live/outlook/ whatever-they're-calling-it this week account. I've set up Standard User Accounts on each machine associated with an alias. I can log-in to outlook from either account with the same password, but I can't log-in to either machine using the Standard User Account with that password. Any help getting this setup working would be appreciated. Thanks.

My operating system is Windows XP, Home Edition. My problem is as follows: My daughter's user account is password protected and for some reason won't recognize the correct password. I have attempted, under her account and under the administrative account, to change the password and also delete it, but the attempted changes are ineffective. I tried making the changes under safe mode, but her account, for some reason, doesn't even appear when I go to User Accounts via the control panel. I considered just transferring her music and photos and setting up a new account. But, her photos are privacy protected so the account won't let me do that.

I have a Panasonic FZ1000 camera that is wi-fi capable. However, I'm having the worst time getting the PC and camera to pair, as have many others. One suggested workaround was to disable "Password protected sharing" in the control panel's Advanced Sharing Settings. However, windows won't let me do this because (to the best of my knowledge) I would first have to remove the password from my Guest user account. I have tried numerous times to do this, but unsuccessfully. Here's what's happening: I enter the Guest account using its proper pw. In the control panel, I get to the "remove your password" screen. Here there is a field asking for my current pw. I enter the pw used to gain access to the Guest account and get the message that "Windows cannot change the password." BTW, "Password protected sharing" can't be disabled in the Guest account, either. Help please.

I can not find any access to password for the Administrator user account. I have tried many options but that one is never listed. I am the administrator and there are no other accounts.

A:How do I change the administrator user account password in Windows 10?

If you're the administrator, and there are no other accounts, try the below steps.

I was under impression that the user account password security in Windows 7 or Windows 8 has been improved by Microsoft since the old days of Windows XP, and that it is now virtually impossible to bypass it... well, I thought so until I read this, or watched this.

Can someone confirm or deny that it is that easy to bypass someone's Windows user account password? If so, why even setting it up? It just makes life more complicated...

Also a follow-up question. If I use something like disc encryption (TrueCrypt), or Microsoft's own BitLocker, will it be as easy to get into my data too?

A:how do i disable creating a new user account & password in windows 7 (answer pls)

Create a password for your account and lock the desktop when you're not using it. If he doesn't have access to Windows he can't change anything.

If he needs access to the system, create a limited account for him. This type of account won't be able to create new accounts.

i have quite a strange problem on my personal pc since the last few days. I cannot login to my useraccount(which has a transparent picture at the logon screen since a few days).
I have just one workarround: if i login with my adminaccount and logoff, the userpicture of my privateaccount appears again and the login is possible.

What could this problem be related to?

Hi there,

What I mean is, is there any way to make a user account on XP which runs nothing(no programs or processes) at all apart from those which are needed by the OS? I only have 1gig of RAM installed and If I'm lucky I can have 600 free to play games with. I'm not too savvy with what processes are needed and not, I do have a fair idea but it's never quite enough.

Is there anyway to just have an account which loads nothing apart from what is needed?

Thank you for reading.

I am trying to figure out how to set Windows 2000 Pro up so that any user who logs onto it, their account with look the same.
Eg, so if i configure the account (with a certian style, desktop colour, taskbar, and icon placement), is there a way (i was thinking using the "All Users" folder) i can make it so everyone who logs on, their account will look the same, as the next person who logs onto that computer (with the same wallpaper and colour scheme).
This can be done in Windows 98 rather easily, yet I cant figure out how to do it in Win2k without actually having to wait till the user logs on, to configure their account. I need help please!

A:how do i make every user account who logs onto Win2k look the same?

I assume that this is either a standalone or in a workgroup. (if it is on an NT or 2000 Domain, there are different ways to do part of this)

You can use the all users for putting in the icons that the user will need. What you will need to do, is place the icons in the allusers desktop folder, then make it read only.

For the color scheme it is a little harder, as you will need to directly edit the user.dat in the default user folder under documents and settings. This file is where the registry setting that controls the colors for new users is kept.

Open up regedt32.

Click on the hkey_local_machine key window and highlight HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE.

On the file menu, go to registry -- Load hive and click on it.

It will open up a standard windows open file box. Navigate to Documents and Settings\Default User and open up the NTUSER.DAT.

The next screen will aks you to name the hive, (This does not rename it in windows, but is just for use by regedt32). I would name it something other than default, as there is already a key called default. I use test when I do it personally.

Now, you will need to open up the test key and go to the control panel\desktop option. In there will be the setting for the default wallpaper. You just double click on the wall paper subkey and it will allow you to specify the path to the custom wallpaper. This needs to be the complete path to the wallpaper in the form of C:\path\wallpapername.bmp.

Now for the colors, they are also under the control panel. This can be done one of two ways, either you can go into the color section and set each one individually by rgb value, or you can go into the appearance section and set it to use a particular predefined windows scheme. Just double click on the current key and type in the name (excatly) of one of the predefined schemes, which are listed in the subfolder under appearance called schemes.

For example, if you wanted new users to have have the eggplant scheme when they logon for the first time, then you would need to double click current and replave Windows Standard with Eggplant.

Now, to lock the settings so that the users cannot change them, you will need to go to start -- run and type in gpedit.msc and press enter.

This will allow you to lock the users from making changes to the desktop area.

In gpedit, go down to the User Configuration and open up the Administrative Templates. Inside of there, the places you will need to look at are the control panel\display portion. You can prevent the users from changing the wallpaper and appearance (color) of the system from there.

You can add Administrator to the Welcome screen using regedit. You would open regedit then navigate to this registry key:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE>Software>Microsoft>WindowsNT>Current Version>Winlogon>>Special Accounts>User Lists.

Create a new DWORD value and name it “Administrator“ (without the quotes). Then modify the DWORD value making it '''1".

Administrator will show on the Welcome screen after a reboot.

have a system here that I'm locked out of due to an unknown password. I've tried all the safe modes available but everything wants a password for the user account. I also attempted an image restore but that also wanted a password. There appears to only be one user account on the system & that is the one that has the unknown pass. I'm pretty much locked out of the system as nothing goes beyond the password request. I've also tried [removed by mod] Live CD but it was unable to retrieve the password. Does anyone know of a good free password recovery or reset tool that will allow me to access the system?

Did you follow the steps in this MS article?
How to copy data from a corrupted user profile to a new profile
Note: You must sign in at least once to the New Account before you can copy the old profile, as the account folder is not created until it is signed into.
After copying the files, click on the New_Username folder, then click on the folder named Old_Username's Documents. Double click the Desktop.ini file, and change the line Owner=Old_Username to Owner=New_Username
Note that you will have to redo any customizations, i.e. wallpaper, colors, Folder Options, Cursors, etc.
Desktop.ini is a hidden file but if you followed the steps in the MS article your system should be set to display it.

Make sure you DO NOT copy the 3 ntuser files -- those are the ones with the corrupt settings.

But your users would have to memorize login. Or you can write a little note right on the Welcome screen wallpaper by editing it in Paint and changing it.

Click Start, and then click My Computer. On the Tools menu, click Folder Options, and then click the View tab. In the Advanced Settings section, clear the Use simple file sharing (Recommended) check box. Click OK. Then, follow these steps:

Right-click the folder in question, and choose Properties.

Click the Security tab.

Click Add, and type in Administrators, click OK.

Select Administrators group that you've added now.

Put a checkmark near Full Control (Allow) in Permissions box.
Click OK.

Windows XP Home Edition, you need to start Windows in Safe Mode in order to see the Security tab. Remaining steps are the same.

Once you add Administrators group and give them Full Control for the folder, the Make this Folder Private option is automatically disabled. Level 1 permissions are no longer in action.

Hello Frenchman,

It depends on if the user account is a Microsoft account or local account.

If it's a Microsoft account, then you are out of luck since it's required to have a password, and it cannot be removed. You can change the password to whatever you like though.

If it's a local account, then you could change it's password and leave the password fields empty to remove it and no longer be password protected.

So far as I can tell, the only solution is to treat it like a lost password and re-install Windows using the format option which I believe means losing all files including all data files. Someone please tell me this ain't so!

I have a laptop running Windows 7 where I have an administrator account and a user account set up (not the Windows 7 guest account). When someone logs onUo the User account there are two *.exe files which do not run without requesting administrator passwords to run. How do I set these files to run without administrator passwords in the User account? They are not harmful applications and are related to the battery management on the laptop.

A:Administrator Password In User Account

Here is a link. Not sure if will help, but helped me.
Add Take Ownership Option Shortcut in Right Click Menu of Windows 7
Go down to the link that says download "take ownership"

Unzip the file, using WinRar.

While in said user account, go to the files you unzipped, double-click the "install Take ownership.reg"

It will install a right-click option in the context menu that allows you to take ownership of a given file or folder.

BE ADVISED: maybe make duplicates of the .exe files in question in case it doesn't work. Or you can re-download them again I guess.

If it works and you are done and happy, you can double-click the "removeTakeownership.reg" and it will remove the entry from your registry as well as the option in the right-click context menu.

Two things you can try doing:

(pulled this from here)

1. Restart your computer and hit F8 multiples times until you see a menu-like screen, if you see the Windows splash screen then repeat this step
2. Highlight and hit enter on Safe Mode with Command Prompt. Try logging in there. If it still doesn't work, then go to step17
3. If you are able to login, once a command prompt pops up, type: net user administrator password /active:yes (you can specify whatever password you want for the administrator account.)
4. If you get a message saying "The command completed successfully", then restart your computer by typing: shutdown -r
5. Boot up again pressing F8, but this time choose just Safe Mode.
6. You will be able to login as Administrator with the password you set in Step 3
7. Hit (windows logo)+R
8. Type regedit
9. Once the registry editor opens up, look for HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\ProfileList
10. In the left pane, find the one that starts with S-1-5..... and ends with .BAK; if you don't find one, skip to step 15
11. Right click it and click Rename, then change the .BAK to .BK
12. Right click the one with the same numbering but without the .BAK and add .BAK add the end
13. Right click the one that you renamed to .BK and clickRename, delete the .BK
14. Eventually, you have switched the .BAK from the end of the second entry to the first. That should probably fix your problem.
15. If you didn't find a .BAK then try this: Open Windows Explorer to C:\Users\Default\AppData\Local\Application Data
16. If you find another Application Data below the one you're on, then delete it. That should probably also fix your problem.
17. If you can't login in Safe Mode, then reboot and hit F8 until you see the menu again, then hit enter highlightingRepair Your Computer
18. Wait until all Windows Files finish loading, then hitNext when it asks keyboard language.
19. Try logging in here also, choose your user from the dropdown menu, and type the password, then jump to step 23
20. If that still doesn't work, then if you have your Windows Installation CD still, put it in and restart your computer.
21. Hit F12 until you see a menu of boot options, choose Boot from CD
22. Choose keyboard language then hit next. Find Repair Your Computer from a little below the center left.
23. Choose Open Command Prompt and type: net user administrator password /active:yes (here again you can specify a password)
24. Close the command prompt and click Restart and jump to step 5
To disable the administrator account, type this in an elevated command prompt: net user administrator /active:no

Is there a way to require a password whenever the UAC Box appears I'm wondering Is there a way to force UAC to require a password anytime it pops up I've been trying to increase security by using a non admin account but that presents a problem First of all I can't use some programs due to inaccesible files Not to mention I have to log into an admin account anytime that I want to do anything User Control: Required? Account Password security related I don't like to use the admin account because after the initial password there is very little internal security other than a User Account Control: Password Required? UAC box User Account Control: Password Required? and even those are just Yes No What I want seems to be a mix of the two similar to the way user accounts work on OS X Whenever I attempt to access something secure ie something that UAC would notify on Windows should ask me for the administrative password This way even if User Account Control: Password Required? I'm on an admin account I'd still need the password to access the feature instead of just getting a worthless pop up that asks me whether I'd like to proceed Apparently in some installations a standard user would be prompted by a password when trying to access something security related On my computer I just get an error and or a dialog that says to log into an administrative account This is the type of prompt I want

A:Solved: Trouble with a User Account Password

Boot into Safe Mode and log in as administrator, (if you are asked for an admin password, try leaving it blank, as this is the default setting)
Once logged on as admin, you should be able to access the user accounts and change or remove the password.

To get into safe mode, keep tapping the F8 key early in the boot up process (Some keyboards may require you to turn on the F Lock feature first)

If I do not need a password, how do I set it up without one? If I do that, will it complicate being the administrator? Thanks for any help!

EDIT: I will be using Windows 8, Home edition

A:Setup-single user account with no password?

Hello JoGirl, and welcome to Eight Forums.

Yes. You would just need to set it up using a "Local" account instead of a "Microsoft" account. Only with a local account can you leave the password fields blank to not have one.

The only issue with it being an administrator account without a password protection would be a security issue of everyone being able to use the account since there is no password they must type before being allowed to.

Hope this helps,

A:UAC - User Account Control will not allow any entry into the Password Box.

Assisting in forgotten password threads is against the rules here, but we can address the issue legitimately.

It sounds as if something is messed up in the OS. Quite logical huh?

I think we can address all 3 issues I can suspect in 1 step here, without breaking any policies.

I recommend a custom install:

That will backup your data, but still do a clean install. Just remember not to format!

That will address a possibility of malware, corrupted OS, take care of the password issue, and remove all programs that may be contributing.

Yes, its always a good idea, malware and viruses can easily by pass a firewall if you browse to dodgy side by accident and they can get control of your computer. I would also recommend keeping UAC on to ensure further security.

A:UAC - User Account Control will not allow any entry into the Password Box.

Additional Information. The UAC pop-up window also only gives me the highlighted box to Cancil the process. It will not allow me to Continue. Further: A box at the top of the pop-up also advises that an Unidentified Program Needs Permission To Run.

A:Windows 8.1 Unknown User Account Permission problem

Hi Jon, welcome to the Eight Forums.

The user profile with SID (security identifier) ending with 1001 is usually (not always) the first user account created when Windows is installed or a pre-installed Windows booted first time. In most cases this means it's your own user account.

You can check for which user account that SID belongs by giving the following command in Command Prompt:

wmic useraccount get name,sid

This example from my laptop, the first account I created when I installed Windows 8.1 was a local account called Admin which got the SID 1001:

SID ending with 500 belongs always to the built-in administrator account, SID ending with 501 to built-in Guest account, whether these two accounts are enabled and active or not. Other user accounts start from 1000.

What the above means is that you have most probably tried to remove your own account. Don't do that !

Although this password problem is recent, I have never been able to get to the store.

I'm wondering if there is a way to change an Administrator account password or create a new administrator account without booting into the actual drive that Windows XP is on, but rather when the drive is accessed from externally (eg. USB). I know the original administrator password. Thanks.

A:Changing User Account Password Without Booting Into Drive

If you know the original password just log on and use the control panel. Also it is against the forum rules to discuss unautorised accsess to a system.

Windows 7 OS 64 bit.
My account on the PC is an administrator account and has no problem, I have set up another standard user account for my spouse but have password problems with this account.

Originally I set up the standard account with a password, later as administrator I then removed the password from the account and the screen tells me that the password has been removed. The problem is that one month on from the password being removed the system puts the original password back onto the standard user account. I then have to go back into control panel/user account and remove the password, the accounts screen shows that the password has been removed. The problem is that one month later the password automatically reapplies itself and has to be manually removed yet again.

Any ideas anyone!

Hi have had this problem for a while now and any help would be greatly appreciated Essentially I cannot install anything as it requires User Account Control verification but the password field for the admin pass does not show up so the only option each Account as install no Control Cannot User password in anything field time is to click 'No' and cancel the installation I Cannot install anything as no password field in User Account Control assume this is because there is no admin password set I tried for a long while previously I have tried to enter using safe mode and try and disable UAC yet when doing so the UAC actually pops up in sade mode without the pass field again I have also tried using Offline NT Registor and Password Editor to create a new pass for the admin yet no luck as the admin afterwards doesn't require a pass nor does the pass field in the UAC show I would really like to find a way to solve this and am willing to do whatever anyone recommends Thanks

A:Cannot install anything as no password field in User Account Control

Hello Archaic, and welcome to Seven Forums.

If the administrator account doesn't have a password set, then you should be able to just log into the administrator account and create a password for it as usual. Without a password, you would just leave the password field blank and press enter.

In Windows Vista, when I try to execute a program from a standard user account that requires the admin password, it says the password is incorrect. It is the correct password because using the same password, I can log in to the Admin account.

Can someone help?

A:Standard user account will not accept Admin password

Lets first make sure that the problem is not worse than it seems
Run an sfc check
System Files - SFC Command
Make a full anti virus scan
Download and run a full scan with malwarebytes.
If all are negative
Open another user account and see if the problem persisits, it may be corruption in one account.

Delete the strange account totally (when logged on good working account). Reboot (not necessary I think). Strange account is really gone? Remake the account without a password. Works?

A:Tricky Windows XP User Account/Profile Transfer Problem

You can't modify an existing account that way. When using "FAST", you need to create the account you need first, then the files/settings will be transferred to that.
Start over, don't creat any dummy accounts, create the accounts required (I assume they have different names?). RUn the "FAST" in the newly created accounts.

I'm trying to backup the pictures, music, and videos that are saved on my buddies laptop. He forgot the password for the main account and whenever I try to transfer files to an external hard drive, a screen pops up and tells me to it cannot transfer files without password. Is there anyway to get around this? EDIT: I thought maybe it would be important to add that the account that I'm using to get access to the files must not have permissions to change anything on the computer. Don't ask me how my friend figured out how to restrict himself from changing anything on the computer, but he did and this general lack of knowledge about computers, likely got in into the trouble, that now is going to require me to do a full restore.

A:Trying to backup files before doing full restore, but don't have the password for user account

Is it possible for me to work around this password? If not, I can always just lose the pictures, music, and videos... but I'm trying to avoid this.

Hi everybody, recently my desktop running on Win xp started to boot very very slowly (unimaginable ... it's not posssible to work !!!! horrible!!!) so I tried to boot into SafeMode. But in safemode after loading some files it displays Safemode in four corners and stops. I've a password protected account and "My Documents" folder is not accesssible to other users. When I try to get the files from "My documents" folder by connecting the SATA HDD to another PC, the folder shows empty and when I try to copy it, it doesn't allow. Pls tell me how to get back the files and folders. After backigup the files I'll format the drive and clean install Win xp. Thanx in advance...

A:Accessing folders/files of Password protected User account in Win XP

Try this on your other pc with the laptops hard drive connected:

Use an Administrators account:

open my computer and from top menu select tools >Folder options > View :

Then scroll to the bottom of the list in window and UNTICK "Use simple file sharing (recommended)"

click apply at the bottom and apply to all folders at the top and click ok:

In my computer note the drive letter of your problem hdd then run: "chkdsk D: /r"
where "D" is the drive letter of your problem hdd.

Let the process finish (might take a long time).

When diskcheck has finished open the drives and go to the folders that you want to access (dont try to open them yet)!

Right click on the folder and select properties then select security tab at the top,
Click the owner tab at the top
then in the change owner to section click to highlight the "Administrators (........)administrators"
(.....just means some chars)
tick "replace owner on subcontainers and objects" and apply. then ok to exit that window.
In the properties window that is still open, Highlight the "Administrators" and Tick the "Full Control" tickbox under "allow" Apply and OK to close the window.

You should now now have full control any data in that folder. Repeat step (2) for all the folders you want to get information from. You can also perform step (2) on individual files if you still cant access them.

If this does not work I'm sure someone else will suggest recovery method for you
let us know your progress please.

I have used the same password on my user account ( Administrator) since purchase of Vista in Feb 2008 and decided to change it but although I am certain I have typed in the password absolutely correctly when I try to make the change it says my password is incorrect.

It is just a home Computer.

I haven't logged off today because if I do I expect I will be denied access and I have a few personal documents in the User account that I need daily access to.
Any suggestions as to what may have gone wrong as the password is just a basic one which is easy to remember.
