Failing to update Anniversary Update on Surface PRO 3 - overheating?

Q: Failing to update Anniversary Update on Surface PRO 3 - overheating?

Hello,
I've been trying and failing to update Anniversary Update on Surface Pro 3.
Downloads, prepares, reboots and then, at about 14% of first step, it shows the thermometer gauge and shuts down.
When I power it on, it reverts to previous version of windows
I've tried it plugged in, plugged out, waiting a few minutes shutdown before starting in updating mode...
I don't know what to do

Preferred Solution: Failing to update Anniversary Update on Surface PRO 3 - overheating?

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/directdownload.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I don't know what to do the thermometer gauge represents your surface pro is getting overheated and in order to prevent heat damage to the core hardware the device/bios shuts down your device. so first we need to fix the overheating issue and then can you continue with the update.

Hi guys, I am really really tired of my Pro 4 already.
When I got the machine, it was wonders. The moment the Anniversary Update hit it, the sound is gone.

Every time I have to go to Device Manager, UNINSTALL the Realtek Audio driver.

I have tested the Pro 4 without the anniversary update and it works just fine. Is there any way we can make the sound work.

From what my limited knowledge tells me, the driver isn't booting up with the bootup. Every time I uninstall it, it asks for a reboot and when it starts, the sound is fine. Any help?

Hello all,

I installed the Anniversary Windows 10 update from scratch on my Surface Book. After installing all the Surface Book drivers, I ran Windows Update and it downloaded and wanted to install more device drivers.

Most of those drivers failed to install and it won't let me re-install them.

Can anyone please tell me why this is happening?

Hello all.
Running windows 10 pro 64 bit.
I've updated from Version 1511 to the anniversary update, 1607.
Or at least, I thought I did.
The update went well, no hiccups, no errors. Used windows update, let it downloaded and install and rebooted. Alas, system still shows OS Version 1511.
Used update again, same thing, rebooted, 1511.
Went to the windows site, downloaded the windows10upgrade9252.exe, ran it, same exact issue, rebooted, still showing version 1511.
Error logs show no issues. Disabled all external drives, turned off anti-virus, etc, repeated, rinsed, rebooted, still version 1511.
Only think I've not done is burned an ISO to DVD and updated from that.
Any clues as to what's going on?
Thanks!
Nelson Davis

I am trying to update from Windows 10 OS Build 10586.589 to the Anniversary Update but my computer freezes at 1% progress. I have tried everything I can think of including: Unplugging all extra SATA drives except my main SSD, unplugging my wireless network adapter, unplugging all USB devices (even mouse and keyboard), removing old drivers and updating outdated ones, and installing the update through a USB flash drive. It always gets to the same part and freezes until I shutdown my computer and lose no data.

You can see pictures of the frozen screen here: http://imgur.com/a/PseoH.

We couldn't install Windows 10
0xC1900101 - 0x40017
We've set you PC back to where it was right before you started installing Windows 10
The installation failed in the SECOND_BOOT phase with an error during BOOT operation
What was tried: Connected straight to ethernet, Turned off wireless and Defender A/V, Removing the D/L files, D/L fresh from ISO file, launched install file, went through approx 50% and PC rebooted - nor stuck on black screen with swirling dots for OVER 4 hours with a brief HD access every couple of seconds.
Rebooted again -- still swirling dots on black screen. Tried again, same results.
Rebooted with F8 to get original Win 10 back.
Turned on "metered connection" option for WLAN to stop this update from happening. But now I cannot get and security updates for this machine.
Please suspend this D/L until fixed. Cannot afford to have no protection!

Hi,

I just downloaded and installed the Windows 10 Anniversary Update yesterday and so far I have noticed some changes in my computer that I was not aware of before the update.

(1) Somehow my System Restore was set to Disabled and all of my restore points are now gone and

(2) All of my Microsoft Update History is also missing.

Could the update be the cause of both?

Thanks and regards,

2harts4ever

A:Update History missing after Win10 Anniversary Update

Yes, the update is the cause of both.

Major version upgrades like this change so much functionality, they often have to reset various settings to default so that they are in a known good state. Unfortunately, many have complained about the System Restore option being reset to Disabled (this is the Windows default).

As for your previous restore points, that's to be expected. You can't restore to a previous restore point on a previous OS version. All the baseline files are different, and you would be restoring settings for the old OS if you were to somehow be able to restore it.

Think of it like a Bookmark or favorite, but they've moved the location to a different URL. Restoring the old favorite only points you to somewhere that doesn't exist anymore.

As for #2, your update history is gone because again, it's a fresh OS, and previous updates are all integrated into the OS now, not patches. Those old updates don't apply to the new OS anymore.

Every time I try to update W 8 I get the error message saying the updates failed and the purple screen that says it is "reverting update". I thought it might be multiple updtaes at once cusing the problem so I tried individual updates at a time. Also disabled AV. Ran update repair. Nothing works.
This after I tried the W8 to 8.1 upgrade and it failed. So I thought I would need to make sure updates were complete. Thus the issue with updates. Ultimately I will try and install the 8.1 os after all this. Any suggestions.

Was just in a Microsoft store and was told that a new widows 10 update was coming that would allow the surface pen to work with any program including Google Docs. Has anyone else heard anything about this?
Posted via the Windows Central App for Android

A:surface pen/windows update

I think they gave you a load of BS. The pen sure works in "every app", but if the app doesn't care about ink then all it will do is act as a glorified pointer arrow. Microsoft can't "automatically" force Google Docs to be ink-compatible. If Google doesn't do it, then how would their Google Docs know "how" to store the ink markings? It's Google's job to update their app.

Windows tried to install the anniversary update. Downloaded fine - restarted itself with the normal percent completed figures then after restarting got the - 'System Thread Exception Not Handled' message.

Fortunately it auto restored the previous version of Win10 so no big deal. Quick look on the MS site is of little help - if any.

Viewed the Event Log and there are goodness knows how many messages. So I guess I'll wait until the next update. Don't think I'm missing a great deal by giving this one a miss.

Any input appreciated.

In settings, shows OS 10586.545 version 1511. In updates shows:
"Cumulative Update for Windows 10 Version 1511 for x64-based Systems (KB3176493)" was successfully installed on 08/11/2016.
Shouldn't my setting show version 1607?

Hi guys,
Recently I updated my surface pro 3 to windows 10 and I was installing the windows update and restarted my tablet when I saw this error code: 0xc0000225
A blue screen appeared and it says that: Your PC/device needs to be repaired.
The application or operating system couldn't be loaded because a required file is missing or contains errors.
File: \WINDOWS\system32\winload.efi
Error code: 0xc0000225
Press the Windows key for recovery

I tried pressing the Windows key several times, or even holding down the windows button but nothing changed on the screen at all and it is getting frustrating.
Tried pressing Ctrl Alt Del but the tablet just restarted itself to the same blue screen again.
Tried pressing F8 button, the screen just refreshed itself to the same page. Same thing occurs when I pressed F10 as well.

Has anyone encountered this problem and resolved it successfully? PLEASE HELP, THANKS!

Just got a refurbished Surface Pro and I feel like the Windows installation might be a windows update is Surface store pro and apps - broken can't bit broken Surface pro - can't update windows and store apps is broken Done all the usual googlings and every step I make takes me further down a feedback loop of 'computer says no' Firstly if I try to check for updates in control panel it gets stuck in a 'checking for updates' loop I saw one fix was to make sure the date was correct mine was WAY off oh how I delighted in the promise of that being the obvious fault - it was not The other issue is that the app store thing has never worked At first it was because the initial Windows set up messed up my attempt to log in using my Microsoft ID then I rectified that and like the update issue it too hung upon trying to start it I did the fix where you copy and paste this 'Add-AppxPackage -DisableDevelopmentMode -Register Env SystemRoot WinStore AppxManifest XML' into Powershell but all that did was delete the actual store app Store is ok now no particular reason just windows update that's broke

Of course after I set everything to not need password login my PC and MS reset everything back to login with password or PIN. Sure these are all saved, on drives etc. only accessible from the PC environment. There is a lot of bad information on how to successfully recover from this minor overlook situation on your part. You do not have to enter safe mode, repair or restore your computer, or do a clean install. None of that is necessary.

Here is all you have to do and I have done this several times in the past and was successful in every instance. Why I
never copy that x%j*(%$#dcb password down before updating is beyond me. Guess I like the stress.

Anyhow, save the heartache by following the instructions on this webpage:

After updating windows 10 anniversary, pc often remains frozen for a few seconds. It's a common problem to other PCs.  Do you have a solution?

A:Windows 10 anniversary update

Valterred The Anniversary Update (AU) is a whole NEW version of Win10.  The previous was 10586; this is 14393 -- and the community Win10 forums are awash with folks whose machines, which had previously been running Win10 without problems, SUDDENLY developed problems either trying to install this Update, or after installing this Update. My desktop has been running Win10 without problems since the earliest days of the Insider Preview over a year ago and it's sailed through Update after Update without problems.  So, you can imagine my surprise when the AU trashed my PC -- to the degree that I restored it from an image backup. What MIGHT work is something known as a repair-install.  This is the least destructive of all the Windows recovery functions and rewrites the Windows system files, including the drivers, leaving your data, settings, and applications intact. To do this, you will need to use the link to download Win10 installation media and either burn a DVD or create a USB stick: http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows-10/media-creation-tool-install?ocid=ms_wol_win10Note that when you go do download and build install media, the tool defaults to matching what is already installed on your PC (as in, Home for Home, 64-bit for 64-bit).  Make sure you select the same version as needed for your PC. If you do not, the resulting media will be different and will force you to enter a NEW product code!Once you have that media, follow the instructions in the link:  http://www.tenforums.com/tutorials/16397-repair-install-windows-10-place-upgrade.htmlGood Luck

Hi,
I was so excited to install the Anniversary Update today on my Surface Pro 4. After 10 mins of use it became obvious the update is very buggy.
The Action Center crashes all the time, I cant dismiss the popup notifications.
Edge crashes way more often cant can no longer load some sites to the point it is useable.
Extensions are unable to install despite following the guidance the site.
Generally the System is slower.
I have now rolled back the update. Microsoft this is bad...real bad. Might trade in my Surface Pro for a Mac.

A:Has the anniversary update been buggy for you?

Lol don't you think that's a bit extreme? trading in?
In any case, it would have been better if you decided to refresh the build.. settings > update > recovery

So I have come across an interesting issue. I am one of those crazy people who type with the Dvorak keymap. Well, it just so happens that I had to enter my WPA key for a wireless access point. It turns out the input box for the key does not recognize my keymap. The input method bar shows "ENG DV" but it still types in QWERTY. I tried switching it to QWERTY and typing, then switched back. Both only types in QWERTY.
This seems to be happening in the calculator also. The . key is where the e is and all of the symbols are in different places (with the exception of the ones over the number keys, since the number keys don't change unless you are using Programmer's Dvorak), however that was fixable by toggling keymaps.
Has anyone else experienced this issue?

My two pcs at home don't show the Anniversary Update at all, otherwise they're both fully updated.

It's been available since 2nd August. I could manually install it, but I'm wondering why it hasn't auto-installed yet.

Also, have the initial 'issues' reported with the update been resolved?

A:Windows 10 Anniversary Update

Assuming your devices have enough space, resources, etc to get the update - with past updates it may take up to two months to make it around the slow ring. You can speed this up by changing to a faster ring or manually getting it.

I am not sure what "issues" you are referring to.. so, maybe?

I'm not sure how you got rid of edge but yes, those removed programs will be reinstalled as that is part of the update. If you removed the apps because you didn't enjoy them the first time, try them after getting the update, they've improved a lot

This update was a pain in the ass First two tries I got a non-working Start Menu and unstable Chrome and Explorer They kept crashing whenever woes Anniversary Update I'd try to back up files Had Anniversary Update woes to revert to previous build to accomplish that Finally got things stable after having to do a fresh install However I still have issues My internet keeps randomly breaking I mean I will have quot internet access quot but nothing's connecting It even makes applications like Chrome crash if there's no connection Sometimes it will finally show an exclamation mark I run the troubleshooter and half the time it says there's nothing found other times it Anniversary Update woes says various things like the IP config was wrong or the access point can't be reached etc I have to keep running the troubleshooter until it's fixed and then ESET for some odd reason has to ask me yet AGAIN whether this is a home or public network EVERY TIME The only thing I can think Anniversary Update woes of is that the driver is unstable Which is odd it IS the latest one And there's an odd problem with thumbnails not loading I mean they're just big file type icons My photos movies etc they don't have thumbnails at all Tried using the Media Preview app to force them to load and that failed Any fix

Hello to TenForms users I am a new member just joined my first post and the reason I joined was besides the other benefits I'll get give is because I have been reading about this Win Anniversary update and some of the headaches that users have experienced getting through it I have a quite modern gaming PC and it runs very fast and very well It came with Win Home Premium installed so I had no say in the matter of whether I wanted to move up or over from Win Anyway it has proven to me to be a very good O S in my opinion - experience me May Win Update 10 for Anniversary The others. help I loved it still do but it does make you scratch your head at times and the other day while doing my normal internet stint I got the usual quot updates ready to be installed quot notification I thought I had disabled all the bigger updates which as far as I knew weren't being installed as time went on but some of the lesser ones 'were' virus defs and essential security updates etc which I didn't have a problem with BUT this one was by far a very worrying time for me Why Here's what happened The Win 10 Anniversary Update experience for me - May help others. and how it happened with a bit of aftermath thrown in to sort of clear the muddy waters Ok as I said up popped the reboot to install update message so after I finished online and terminated the connection via my desktop icon that's just what I did Well from the Shutdown and Reboot command icons I also have on the desktop I clicked on Reboot and it began the shutting down process and went to the blue screen with the little circle of dots but it just sat there After about mins I began to worry that this was a hiccup so I held down on the power button to force a shutdown I don't have a reset button on mine which it eventually did I immediately restarted it and it went back to the desktop in normal fashion and the first thing I saw was the same 'update ready' message I had no other option so again I clicked on the reboot icon and it did the same thing again it just sat there but this time I just sat too watching and eventually it did reboot but no complete message Back at the desktop again I saw the update message which was starting to irritate me so this time I clicked on the notification message and was taken to the scheduled restart and update settings screen and it was scheduled to happen at hrs by default but I clicked on quot restart now quot button and at last the update process actually began Up came the blue shutdown screen with its circle of dots but this time there was also the usual message to 'not turn this PC off' Phewww thank heavens Up came but now it was the numbers turn to make me sweat because stayed there for another good - mins then - mins - mins Oh my god excuse the language but that's what I thought this is going to take forever I went and made a cup of coffee and when I got back it was on but then it darted up to quite fast ahhhh that's better From - - - still slow but at least we're on our way It stalled on for a while then slowly proceeded up to - - - Again it stayed on for a while Eventually it jumped up to - and at some stage around here it began rebooting There was a message on the screen that this PC will restart many times so this was par for the course I guess and for the rest of this painful update it must have restarted or more times during which time I saw some poor graphics and other unusual things appear on the screen - must have been updating drivers or something Eventually I saw Complete - Yippee No not because I was happy that it had actually updated but more out of relief that it was finally over What a right royal pain in the More than half an hour Anyway the last reboot back to the desktop was quite a slow one and that made me worry a bit as my PC takes about secs from the time I hit the power switch to ready at the desktop or about secs once it's through the system checks and booting my account - like I said it's fast After it reached the desktop it was st... I downloaded the Anniversary update on my Alienware M17 laptop (16Gb Ram, i7CPU). The download all went well, but when I restarted, it is still stuck, after 4 hours.
The screen says:

Working on updates 1%
Don't turn off your PC. This will take a while.

I was able to download the Anniversary Update ISO, before I did the Anniversary Update, so I do have that as a backup, but won't that destroy all the data on my C drive?

My questions are:

1. How long did the Anniversary Update take on your PC?

2.. What is the recommended action to take ?

A:Anniversary Update Stuck at 1%

1) I haven't done the upgrade online on any of my 3 systems. I always used an .ISO.

I have an old laptop set to treat WiFi as a metered connection. When I tried to update to the latest build (14393.10) of the Anniversary Update through WiFi, it froze at 6%. I connected it to my router with an ethernet cable, and the update proceeded quickly.

2) If you have the .ISO, you can mount it as a virtual disk. You can upgrade from that (just launch setup.exe). You have the option of preserving your files and "apps".

You could also create a bootable USB drive or DVD from the .ISO. You'd then have the option of doing an upgrade (if you booted into the existing Windows installation) or a clean install (if you booted from the flash drive or DVD).

I suggest spending a little time in the Tutorials here. Not all of them are organized in the most readable fashion, but they cover all the details.

Hello, if you search the web, you will find a significant number of people are experiencing significant issues with the anniversary upgrade including freezing. As yours is a custom built PC, there's no direct comparison or manufacturer to refer to. I've noted a couple who needed a BIOS update.

If yours works reliably with Win 10 10586 but not the anniversary upgrade, I suggest you roll back to 10586 (allowed up to 10 days after upgrading) and block the upgrade. This is/was possible even with the Home edition:
Stop Windows 10 from automatically updating your PC - CNET
e.g. by using Wifi only, as a metered connection or disabling the appropriate service.

You'd need to check what actually works now in the anniversary edition for Windows Home, as this, like features and GUI, may have changed.

This was provided for Home users.. I don't know if it still applies now.

First post here so hello to everyone out there
I have a budget tablet with low end specs which was working fine, even with its limitations. It's a Chuwi Hi12 Tablet (windows 10 and Android 5.1 dual boot). Since the update it's sluggish, frame dropping, Edge freezes, etc. I did the update a week ago on my home PC (much more powerful) and didn't notice any drop in performance I decided to delete the old windows version to save space on my tablet, since it only has 64gb storage.
Is there a way to fix this or, even better, will a future windows update fix it automatically or am I being too optimistic?

Cheers

Yep, I'm apprehensive about the Anniversary for my main desktop, a Windows Pro system, with C & D SSD's and E-H as rotating disks. I've upgraded my backup desktop and laptop (both are Windows Home) with Anniversary with not hitches; however, I really need to take a lot of care with the main desktop, since it is my go-to machine.

I've elected to delay to Anniversary installation using the "Defer Upgrades" setting, but I don't know how long that will protect me.

Another issue are my two graphics cards: both are nVidia, and I had a nVidia compatibility problem on my backup machine; however, that has been resolved (apparently) and I was able to load Win10 Home with no hitches, and able to upgrade to Anniversary, again, with no hitches.

So, what about my Win 10 Pro machine with the two SSD's -- how long should I wait?

Trying to run the update, everything seems to run fine, and then I get a message about uninstalling an app that isn't compatible, but it isn't listed? I'm currently on Windows 10...
I've attached a screenshot.
I've tried doing a clean boot and still got the same results.

I'm helping a friend with her Toshiba laptop. It came with Windows 7 and she had updated it to windows 10 but could not update to the anniversary version.

The anniversary update repeatedly failed for me too. So I did a sfc/scannow which found errors and fixed them. I rebooted, turned off the windows firewall, and tried the anniversary update again. This time it started installing, warning me it will restart several times. But after a while it just shutdown and stayed shutdown. So after a long wait I restarted manually. It booted up with a message saying it was restoring the "previous version" which turned out to be windows 10.
How should I proceed?
Thanks.

The company I work for has a few dozen pcs on windows 10. The funny thing is none of them have received the AU. The IT guys aren't aware of any new updates
So for pc users in the business sector, where the pcs are managed by the company, is the AU update delayed by a certain amount? Or is it that the IT department will manage the update process?

A:When will Anniversary Update be available for enterprises?

On my desktop that I upgraded using the Windows Upgrade assistant on Wednesday I noticed last night a screen came up and said "Your PC is now eligible for the upgrade", it disappeared very quickly, so some PC's are still on roll out, it could be they just haven't seen it as it is a weekend.
Of course it could also be they are down to the IT department to do it as well.

You've probably had lots of these, but I have to request help.

My Windows 10 updated worked and I can log in and work.

My Store no longer works, nor does Start menu, Cortana, Edge or any other Windows Apps that come from Store.

I have been on the Microsoft Forum, but haven't had any help.

I have used a Microsoft Tool that reregisters the Apps but still nothing works,

Please help, if you can.

Thanks

Is it possible to skip the anniversary update but still get security updates?
The question is not whether this is a good idea. Just, is it possible.

A:Skip the Anniversary Update?

it's really difficult to get a clear answer to something with regards to win10. Not sure you can block it completely but you can prevent downloads if over a metered connection. The 1607 update might be deferred if you install it then roll back. It will be fine if you leave it on 1511 and wait till the next major update which isn't too far away. This is what i'm going to do. We'll see if this behaves any better.

After the anniversary update my Homegroup sort of thinks it has gone. If I check the settings, it says ( on all my PC's ) that there is a homegroup to join but I am not currently in a Homegroup. But ... the Homegroup is actually still active. Files and so on are being shared. I am not completely sure what is going on, has anyone else encountered this issue?

The update went smooth as can be. Sadly now the Edge browser is crashing on every single site I visit. It tells me the site is not responding and then the window with the message "looking for solution" comes up. It is every website. Any ideas?

Hi. I recently rolled back my desktop from the anniversary update because I was noticing problems with start times (slower), my wifi (poor connection) and bluetooth (connection problems with no audio). After trying to reinstall my drivers which had no success, I decided to roll back my desktop and everything works fine. Windows updates automatically so the question I have is what to do about this new update. Do I find a way to prevent updates or bite the bullet and hope that it was a bad anniversary install? Thanks.
