i bought recently a new dell laptop model 3558 inspiron with procesor intel core i5 ...it has a linux preinstalled on it ,but it does not help me very much ...i want to buy a windows 10 license but to avoid surprises and wasted money ,i would like to know if this laptop is compatible and tested with windows 10
I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.
I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.
You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/directdownload.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)
Your computer does support Windows 10. You can click the links below for information installing Windows 10 as well as a drivers link.

Most likely possible. I installed Win10 on a Dell Studio 17/1747 a couple of days ago that had Win7. Have also installed it on 2 Dell Inspiron 15 Notebooks, just finished one. One thing to watch for is perhaps the need for updated/Win10 compatible drivers for Wireless Network and, if you have it, Bluetooth Wireless [both of my 15s needed it] but check support.dell.com with your Service Tag to be sure.
Hey guys my laptop is being really confusing lately, it wont open any icons and when i click on them it says getnow download manager and has a giant loading screen come up. I think this happened when i clicked "open with," and now most of my icons dont do anything. I can get on to the internet but only if i right click on the icon on my taskbar and open a site i was on recently. Even when i go back to open with, none of the options work. I downloaded WinRAR a while ago and still have it but its not installed apparently and wont open. So im screwed. Please help!!
Welcome to TSG.
Run a full and uninterrupted scan using your installed antivirus and see what comes up.
how can I tell if the Sata hard drive is actually connected to the SATA controller and not the IDE controller? or how do i tell which controller is in charge?
If the Dell is new and it has an Intel processor, you'll see a program in the Start Menu called the Intel Matrix Storage Manager. That shows all drives and the format of their connection.
If the Dell is new and has an AMD processor? Beats me.
I recently purchased a used Dell Laptop running WIndows 98 SE. It came with an Ethernet card and is enabled. When I went to sign on to the internet, it says it can't find my modem. I go under other devices and listed is PCI Ethernet Controller and PCI MUltimedia Audio device. There are yellow question marks next to each. I look up the ethernet controller and tells me that a driver is not installed. I attempted to reinstall and it says it can't find a driver.
How do I get this ethernet card to work?
Under PCMCIA Socket is listed a Texas Instruments PCI-1225 CardBus controller. Does that mean something?
Thanks again for everyone's help.
Just pulled out the card and it's a 3com 10/100 lan cardbus pc card wti5h Xjack Connector. Moel 3cxfe575bt
Hope this helps.
I'm not a tech person so bear with me.
The LAN connection worked fine fine up till a few weeks ago but now I can use the internet through wireless connection only.I tried turn off the wireless connection & connect the modem to my laptop using the LAN cable...didn't work. I used another cable (i thought the one I used before was faulty). It still doesn't work & I can't see the LAN symbol either. Is the LAN port broken or something? what should I do?
In your BIOS screens, look for 'On-board devices'. Click it open to expand the options, look for 'Integrated NIC', select that. Select the option 'enable'.
Press F11 (save and exit). That should make the LAN icon appear in your taskbar, and let you connect your pc to the router via a CAT5E cable, and the 'net.
I own a dell laptop and the on button doesn't work properly. I can turn the computer on but with a great deal of difficultly. I have to press REALLY hard, sometimes hold it sideways, turn it upside down, it's a real hassle. I've been told by a friend that'll i'll probably need to get a professional to fix it but I'd like to know if there is a way I can fix it by myself?
Thanks in advance
Your friend may be right, but it depends on what is causing the button issue. What's the make and model# of your laptop?
On some models you can take off a few screws, pull off a panel and switch out the button. At the same time, that's the best case scenario; most laptops are pretty tough nuts to crack and many switches are built into the motherboard or daughter board (therefore creating the need to replace the whole part).
I have a Dell laptop at work, I'll have to look up the specific model, that runs on vista home premium. Yesterday, the "i", "j", "k", "m", and space bar stopped working. Any thoughts on what may be wrong or how to fix it??
i think its just problem in function[Fn] keys.
are you check it using press Fn+num lock key.?
My dell stylus pen can't be activated after my Dell Venue 11 Pro device is upgraded to Windows 10.
Please advice me how to solve this problem. Thanks in advance.
I have the same problem after upgrading to Windows 10. Don't say it's the battery because I have replaced with a new battery and still won't work.
Dell, please provide solution.
I recently bought a new Dell laptop Inspiron 1545 with Windows 7 64-bit, Pentium(R) Dual core CPU T4200 @ 2.0GHz (2CPU's), 4096MB RAM. The graphics card is an ATI Mobility Radeon HD 4330
The main problem is that the Sims 3 game wont load on it. I put it in and I can hear it whizzing round however nothing happens and it doesnt recognise it. There are no error messages or anything.
I have used the game on a previous Dell laptop and it worked fine so the game is alright, also, I have played other games on my new laptop and its fine. On the other hand it doesnt recognise certain DVD's either. I thought the spec of my laptop was adequate for the Sims 3 but I could be wrong. Any help would be much appreciated!
What happens when you double-click on the DVD drive letter in Computer?
Dell inspiron 1470

Can you access the disc through manually through My Computer? If not, then I would try the disc on another computer. If it doesn't work there, it's possibly a bad disc.
My wife has an HP docking station that allows all the cables and such to be plugged in to that, instead of into the various outlets around the laptop. Sure is nice to be able to plug everything into one central location. However, her laptop was stolen. I have a Dell Precision M60 laptop and am wondering if it will work.
Anyone out there absolutely certain it would work? Obviously, unless I'm absolutely certain it won't fry my system I'm not going to try it.
Unless for some amazing coincidence the connections on the back of the two computers are identical, a docking station for one manufacturer's computer won't work on another.
I recently bought Dell Inspiron 14R N4110, which came only one default partition (C:\) with Windows 7 Home Premium.
But later on, I did one more partition (D:\), and I installed all drivers(which comes with Dell laptop). but some how my internet is not working properly. Sometime its too slow and not connecting.
I reformatted the laptop, and Restored the modem/router to factory defaults (in that order) neither helped. But if I restored my laptop to factory default (which I don't want, because it has only one partition C:\ ), than everything works fine. Why its happen ?
I hope that you people will be a big help.
I greatly appreciate your help.

My old dell had too small a hard drive, and being too lazy to install a new one, I took out my IBM thinkpad and hooked it up instead, the dell mouse works with it, but its registering as an IBM mouse, and the scroll wheel won't work. Also I hooked up a Dell Trinitron 21'' monitor, and that won't work at all, I just get a black screen. Any thoughts?

hi i just got a new laptop today im using steam it says i need to download flash player ive installed it looked it up on add and remove programs but i cant use it and it wont run please help
Did you ever find the Flash Player in the Add/Remove programs view?
Please uninstall the Flash player, reboot the machine, then download and reinstall it again.
Is it steam that isn't recognizing the Flash Plugin? Because the Flash plugin is only really used in the Browser-view of steam and shouldn't affect it's functionality in any other way.
If both are installed and problem persists after reboot, also Repair steam from Add/Remove programs after Flash has been installed, to make sure that Steam knows it's installed from the start.
Otherwise get back to us with more information, what error codes you get, where it won't load etc etc.
every thing is on max not shure why it works only sometime head phones work all the time but speakers come and go sometime when i bang the back the volume comes for a second and diissapears i need help
fully updated driver
The jack where you plug in your headphones probably turns the speakers
off when the headphones are plugged in.
Over time, this causes wear to the jack and it does not make contact
properly,so the audio is not being passed to th speakers.
You can have the jack replaced(expensive?), or use a set of USB powered
BTW,not a good idea to bang on a laptop.
My brother recently purchased a Dell Inspiron 15 3521 with Windows 7 & one of the USB 2.0 ports doesn't work. We've plugged into it all of our USB Drives & an IPod Touch & it doesn't respond to anything. Their are no errors in the Device Manager & scanning for hardware changes doesn't change anything. The Other USB 2.0 & the 2 USB 3.0 ports work just fine. Is their anything we can try before we call dell since it brand new so it has a warranty on it.

is there a driver that will work with vista for my modem?
Er.... what is the make an model of this modem?
A little history regarding your problem wouldn't hurt.
My Dell Inspiron Laptop which runs on Windows Vista will not start properly, the screen will go black after loading, this is before i can get to the log on stage. There is only a cursor which i can move.
I then started Startup Repair and it performed the checks, but my computer still wouldn't start. I then tried System Restore which didn't have a backup. I clicked the link to create a backup, but it said 'Your computer is running in a limited diagnostic state'. I have tried running the Windows Vista disk and it doesn't change anything. I have tried every method I know of, but I cannot get my computer working. Is there any other way, if you know please help me.
One last thing you can try is to press F8 while booting and on the next menu, select the 'Last Known Good' option
Inspiron 15R SE 7520
When I attempt to start my laptop it goes to the Dell logo screen and will not boot Windows 8. Any suggestions?
I've had the computer less than a month and if I have to restore the system completely it will not cause much of a problem.
Thanks for the help in advance!
Re-installing windows is the last resort. So before doing that, you can try the steps mentioned below which might fix the issue. 1. Restart the laptop and start tapping the F2 key at the Dell logo for enter the BIOS. 2. Navigate to the “Advanced” menu. 3. Change the SATA operation/selection in BIOS from Intel Smart Response to AHCI. 4. Press F10 to save changes and exit. 5. Reboot the system. 6. Go back into the BIOS by tapping the F2 key and change the SATA operation/selection in BIOS from AHCI to Intel Smart Response. 7. Save changes and exit by pressing the F10 key. 8. Reboot the system and it should boot normally into Windows. In case the above steps don’t fix the issue, run the Pre-Boot System Assessment (PSA / ePSA) Diagnostics. Run the test and check if gives any error code. Note down the error code and update me with the same, would let you know the next course of action. Please write back with results.
Hey There! I have a Dell Dimension L500r with a pentium lll processer, 256 MB of Ram and and 80 GB hardrive that is currently running Windows 98 SE. I want to update to Windows XP but i don't know if my computer could run. I really don't care if it's prety slow but i would like to atleast listen to my music in media player and run the internet even if it was as slow as crap. It's running very well right now. I have considered windows ME but i can't find the upgrde CD ANYWHERE! I really would like XP ! Would it workplease help
The small buissness I work at has had a computer donated to us with Windows ME. The three users would prefer Windows XP, yet, as I understand it XP may not run on some systems based on hardware such as motherboard, etc.
The computer in question is a Dell V350 with Intel[r] Family 6 Model 5 processor.
Please help-- Thank you,
You might be able to run it but, it would probably be slow on a 350mhz machine. It also needs 128mb of ram, supports as low as 64mb but, once again, would be slow. Here are the system requirements. Please note, a system meeting system requirements usually runs like a turtle.
Here's What You Need to Use Windows XP Home Edition
PC with 300 megahertz (MHz) or higher processor clock speed recommended; 233-MHz minimum required;* Intel Pentium/Celeron family, AMD K6/Athlon/Duron family, or compatible processor recommended
128 megabytes (MB) of RAM or higher recommended (64 MB minimum supported; may limit performance and some features)
1.5 gigabyte (GB) of available hard disk space.*
Super VGA (800 ◊ 600) or higher resolution video adapter and monitor
CD-ROM or DVD drive
Keyboard and Microsoft Mouse or compatible pointing device

Did an update in from Windows 7 64 bit where it worked fine. Updated to Win10 and noticed that the touchpad driver doesnt work and the brightness wont work properly. I have tried everything to fix them and nothing! Dell doesnt officially support Win10 on this laptop. It's pretty frustrating! Thanks!
Officially, Dell only supports EXX30 series and newer. But a lot of times, W7 drivers do work in W10.
I would go to Dell's website and pull the touchpad driver for W7 and see if it works.
I have tried My Dell Downloads on multiple Dells with Windows 10 -- and it doesn't do anything after clicking "Register System".
I have tried it on Windows 7 Dell PC -- and it does work!
I have opened up all the security settings, etc, and no luck.
How do I download the factory installed software on Windows 10?

What Model Dell do you have? It helps.
If you have Intel Display Audio, that is the audio for HDMI, unless you also have a separate video card that provides it.
Uninstall the Intel Display Audio, in the Device Manager, RIGHT click on the Intel Display audio entry then LEFT "Uninstall". DO NOT uninstall any drivers. Restart the PC and when Windows starts it will detect and reinstall the Intel Display Audio. If there were any Windows corruptions with this, the reinstall will fix it.
Just wanted to relay a little experince I had with a refurbished Dell unit here at [Dell] x64 Audio Windows work won't Pro HD with Realtek 7 work I ordered a Dell [Dell] Realtek HD Audio won't work with Windows 7 x64 Pro Studio refurb and when it arrived I noticed the analog inputs outputs weren't recognized [Dell] Realtek HD Audio won't work with Windows 7 x64 Pro in the realtek audio manager It wouldn't notice any devices plugged into either the front or the back panel It did recognize the HDMI and Digital inputs I uninstalled drivers installed three different drivers with out any luck Each time I uninstalled the device rebooted installed the drivers and rebooted again These drivers were the latest Dell drivers for Windows x Realtek drivers for Windows x and even the Realtek Vista x just in case After using Dell tech support they did exactly what I had already done they sent out a tech to replace my motherboard The tech installs the moterboard boots up the machine after configuring the cmos and we notice the analog jacks are now showing in the Realek Audio Manager Ok we're making progress We plug in the speakers in the rear jack the little pop up says a device is plugged in Seems to be working We play some audio and nothing We plug in my earbuds into the front jack pop up says they are plugged in green audio jack is no longer greyed out in Audio Manager but still no sound Now I'm pissed this is a new motherboard I start uninstalling the drivers and install from a new download from Dell After the reboot the pop ups start going crazy the system thinks there are audio devices plugged in all jacks The tech leaves since he can only install the hardware and I have to wipe the drive and install fresh just in case there was a problem with the chipset talking to the old install of Windows Format install new copy of Windows install latest drivers same results Contact Dell support they do the same things again and determine that I need a new system So now I have to wait - weeks without audio which sucks Anyone want to chime in here and tell me I missed something System specs to the left obviously
Hollywood, how did you resolve this? Did the new system work? I'm seeing the exact same issues with my refurb (wonder if I got your old box, sigh).
Has anyone tried to install Windows 7 on a dell dimension 3000? Any driver issues, or compatability issues? I am going to do some testing and this is the only test computer I have. It does have 2 gigs of Ram.
What about other specs???

I cannot get into safe mode F8 doesn't work. I can't try any repairs on computer because I can't start computer. Any help please. Cheers Dasha.
Does anyone have experience using the Windows 10 Pro upgrade disc that comes with this desktop?
I ordered this specific model a week ago I'm now sitting here using it as I type this. I popped the included disc in, rebooted, and then hit F12 to boot from the disc. The disc ran and I attempted to select the option to install Windows 10 and keep my files that are on the drive. It told me the drive is locked so it can't install. So instead I then tried another option which was to wipe the entire drive clean and install Windows 10. That didn't work either because there was a "partition missing". There is an astonishingly low amount of search results related to my problem on the internet. So I was hoping someone here had some experience or advice to offer me.
I have performed a system recovery (using the Dell Backup and Recovery App) which took the laptop back to the state that it was when it came from the factory. Since then I get prompted to activate Windows 8 but I get a "Windows cannot activate right now" message all the time. What do I need to do to re-activate Windows 8?
This error can happen if the computer is not connected to the Internet.
If the computer is not connected to a wirless/wired Internet then connect the computer to the wired/wireless internet and try to activate Windows 8.

I have an Inspiron 7520 and uninstalled and reinstalled the new version of Dell Backup and Recovery Manager -- upgraded to premium to make sure that I would have full ability to use the program. Note: the old version didn't work at all -- hung up on backup, etc.
I have rebooted.
When I try and open the Manager interface, I can't. All I get is the clock logo with the hand spinning. I cannot set the destination. I cannot select what I want to back up. I've tried this several times and just get the spinning clock which I end up ending through Task Manager.
I have tried opening the Manager from the installed link on desktop, from my list of programs, from the Start menu, and from the tray icon. Nothing works.
I have the same issue with the non premium version, I made the mistake of upgrading to v184.108.40.206 that is available for download and now have the same spinning clock, the program never loads so can't do anything with it. I have tried twice now to uninstall and then reinstall but still the same issue with spinning clock.
This is on a brand new XPS 8500 running windows 8. The reason I tried upgrading is that the version I had would not create recovery disk on usb key (would take forever to see the usb key and then would fail with pretty much useless error message before writing anything to the usb key, all it would do is format it to something that could no longer be read by windows.
I have just installed Windows 8 Professional edition alongside Windows 7 Professional, however I cannot use my built in monitor when within the normal mode of Windows 8, Instead I have to use an external monitor (I'm currently using my TV via HDMI), however, in safe mode I can use my built in laptop monitor, or if I disable the intel HD 3000 graphics driver, however I do not want to do this because I would prefer to still be able to use my dual-monitor setup, I have all of the latest drivers for the video devices and still no avail, could someone please help!
Thanks in advance,
Hi, my friend was having problems with her labtop and she gave it to me to fix for her.
the computer was suppose to come with vista, but when I had been given the computer it was already reformated to windows xp. nothing was working even the right click wouldnt function propery so this computer was a mess.
Now I upgraded it to windows 7 ultimate and everything is working flawlessly except the dvd drive.
when putting cd's into the dvd drive, they work perfectly, and I have tried numerous dvd's so its definantly the drive that is having problems.
the dvd drive model is tsscorp model ts-l463a
does anyone have the proper driver and firmware, or can guide me on what to do from here.
I am confused!

Can I install WinXP Pro from older Dell laptop on to new Dell laptop?
I am using a Dell Inspiron 8200 right now and in order to save some money on my new Dell laptop, I'd like to order Home or MediaCenter with the new computer and then install WinXP Pro myself instead of paying the extra $119 to have them do it. I have a Reinstallation CD of WinXP Pro that came with the old Dell laptop; will I be able to use it to install WinXP Pro on my new one?
probably not no. they are usually pretty good at stopping people install their restore discs onto different systems.
Would Dell Factory restore DVDS work after Dell replaced the motherboard? I haven't tried it because I have the dell re-installation disk, just wondered if I ever need to get rid of this computer. I am planning on keeping the computer as long as possible. Just for information no activation was required. I didn't have to use the OEM key on the back of the computer.
With dell's the key is intergrated with the os. If they replaced with same motherboard then I do not see why it wouldn't.http://www.sevenforums.com/general-discussion/368451-would-dell-factory-restore-work-after-dell-replaced-motherboard.html

Welcome to the Community, it could be an issue with the harddrive. I suggest you can start by running the Hardware diagnostics.
To run diagnostics press and hold down the "Fn" key (on the lower left hand bottom of the keyboard) and turn on the system,it should ideally bring up screen showing Pre-Boot System Assessment.
Another way to run the diagnostics go to F12 screen, scroll down using the "up" and "down" arrow key, choose diagnostics and press Enter.
If the diagnostics shows any error code/message please post it back.
Since your system is getting stuck on black screen with blinking cursor, you can also try to release flea power.
To release flea power disconnect the charger and remove the battery, press and hold down the power button for 30 seconds, reconnect the battery and charger.Turn on the system and see if it boots to Windows.
Hope this helps,
Over the last 2 days I have been having a problem as indicated in the title of this post. The fault has rectified itself 3 times, but again today, it is back to "battery plugged in, not charging." As I am running the laptop (Windows Vista Home Premium; 32 bit) on the adapter without problems, I assume that the adapter itself may not be faulty.
I also have a Dell Inspiron 630M laptop running Windows 7. Can I safely use that adapter with the Vista laptop, without causing damage to the Vista ? If it is safe to do so, and the battery on the Vista starts charging, then it would indicate that the Vista adapter/charger has some kind of fault.
Hoping someone can give me some guidance. Thanks.
If the adapter has the same plug and the same or higher power rating, you can swap them.
Check to see whether the 1545 recognizes the AC adapter or whether it shows unknown (F2 at powerup). If it shows unknown with two different adapters, you have a bad power jack or a bad mainboard.
The previous driver allowed for edge scrolling but latest version does not have the capability.I understand for those upgrading to Windows 8 with touch screen capability this is not an issue but what about us who do not have touch screen. In my opinion this is a major flaw. Please let me hear form you if you too are unhappy about the new Windows 8 Touch pad driver. By the way, I tried rolling the driver back but the previous driver causes serious erratic behavior. Below is a screen shot of the version for the newest Windows 8 Touch Pad driver.
This problem appears on Windows 8.1
1) Go into c:\program files\DellTPad\
2) In this dir I have
a) DellTouchpad.exe: this is the app called from control panel whose picture you posted.
b) DellTPad.exe alternate utility to set touchpad setting. When launching this I have this option (translating into english) "one finger actions/multi-finger actions", and then it allows you to set single finger vertical/horizontal scrolling.
I had a hard drive failure on my XPS 15, I replaced the hard drive, and then reinstalled Windows 10. I reinstalled all of the drivers listed on the XPS15 9530 support page. However, now the integrated web camera does not work. In the drivers list, there is nothing listing a web camera to install. I also tried installing Dell Webcamera Celntral using this download link (http://en.community.dell.com/support-forums/laptop/f/3519/t/19448019
It also appears that there are some issues within the device manager list (picture below).
Does anyone have an idea how to fix this?
We're listening. We'll surely try and assist you. I would suggest you to update the BIOS on the computer. Please enter your service tag # on the link below, then download the BIOS required onto the system and install it.
Also, I would suggest you to run the test on Webcam on the system.
1. Open the link http://dell.to/14YjKb2
2. Select ?choose a diagnostics test? under ?Diagnostics? tab.
3. Select ?Camera?.
4. Click on ?Test selected devices? button.
5. Let me know if the results.
Would any of you please tell me where to find the proper -bit drivers to use on a Dell Inspiron S The official Dell website does not share drivers for that edition of XP My computer came with Ubuntu pre-installed Please help me get the right drivers XP Pro -bit The only reason get do work How help XP Pro you site to me. won't on Dell Dell (64bit) 531S? why I m searching for -bit drivers for XP is Dell site won't help me. How do you get XP Pro (64bit) to work on Dell 531S? because I have no interest in using Dell site won't help me. How do you get XP Pro (64bit) to work on Dell 531S? Windows Vista or any -bit operating systems from Microsoft Like I mentioned before the Dell website is not offering the proper drivers I need for this computer and the Windows XP -bit I ve read articles about getting -bit drivers to work on that computer but I haven t found any website that offers the same drivers I m basically on my own according to this Dell expert see below That person told me about the drivers without sharing single link to download the -bit drivers or chipset Dell site won't help me. How do you get XP Pro (64bit) to work on Dell 531S? for XP which he she mentioned Dell does not support bit in that model and the reason there are no drivers You are basically quot on your own quot to try and find suitable drivers However if you installed the Chipset drivers Windows should either install a generic driver or find suitable drivers The correct install sequence is Install Windows Install chipset driver Install Device Drivers On Intel systems the chipset drivers define what is on or attached to the motherboard I assume the AMD drivers do the same thing Click to expand nbsp
The very best database for drivers is DriverGuide.com . You need to create a free account to gain access.
What the tech suggested was installing enough drivers to get your networking to work and then letting Windows find all the missing drivers automatically using the now working internet by selecting the option "search for drivers automatically" when installing the devices through the add/remove hardware applet in the Control Panel.
After doing a clean install of my computer about a week ago (Windows XP Home Edition) my Dell speakers won't work at all, in WMP and on websites, such as YouTube. I installed the driver from Dell Support but they still don't work. Everything is plugged in properly and the green light on the right speaker goes on, but no sound at all comes out. NOTHING. I looked around in Audio settings and everything seems to be in place. The speakers aren't muted or anything. Could someone please help me solve this problem? Thanks!
Check your connections again. We've all plugged in the PC connection to the wrong port from time to time.
If that's not the problem, uninstall the driver in Device Manager and reinstall.
Dell Audio doesn't work on my Dell computers but Realtek does. Why is Dell Audio on my computer if I can't get it to work? It looks like a better program with far more features.http://www.sevenforums.com/sound-audio/400590-dell-audio-doesnt-work-my-dell-computer.html

edited to add: I have Windows 8.1...All my Microsoft office programs are old and I need to purchase one for home use that also has Outlook? I'm currently using Microsoft Windows Mail with the Essentials program. I don't know if it was already installed or it came with my Microsoft Office 2003. But I have issues with it.
What do I use? The home versions of Office don't appear to include Outlook! Can I transfer my Microsoft office 03 and buy Outlook?
Sorry, I know this is a foolish question, but I'm trying to not buy what I don't have to. I'm guessing the Mail button (app) on the Windows 8 is simply an app to allow users to get mail from different places in one place. I don't use any of those freebie emails. I hate them.
What works best on 8?
I am using MS Office 2010 Pro, works perfect on Win8.1 You could use Mozilla Thunderbird https://www.mozilla.org/en-US/thunderbird/ With Open Office https://www.openoffice.org/product/index.html

I have recently bought a new laptop manufactured by Dell Inc. USA, which has currently Windows 7 Ultimate 32-bit installed by default by the OEM. I would like to upgrade and try out the latest Windows release "Windows 8.1 Pro" on my new Dell laptop. So, I am asking that which is the best version of Windows OS for my Dell machine according to my specs of laptop (you can check the specs by clicking on "My System Specs" in the bottom of the post). Will it be Windows 7 or Windows 8.1 Pro, which one is the best version a/c to the specs.?
Welcome to the forums, create a small partition and try the trial version of Win 8.1 Ent, I couldn't find the Pro version.

Unfortunately I created a system password and an admin password on my mother in laws bios setup - thinking i was changing her login password. I realize that it did help the forgotten login password. I have now fixed that issue but would like to turn off the system and admin password. Is there anyway to?

They are asking the key which I dont have it.i contacted singapore office and they asked me to scan using command prompt by giving the command as, sfc/scannowit says there is no violation..but the activation message kept popping up.and now they directed me to Bangladesh dealer as am using the laptop in dhaka.could u please help me......it says my windows will expire on 4th novemberregards
It is possible you have a pirated copy of Windows. Computers with a factory installed legal copy of Windows do not need to be activated. The activation code for Windows 8 is located in the system BIOS and is read automatically. You can check the code by using one of the utilities that will extract it from the BIOS. If there is a code, contact Microsoft and ask them if the code is valid.http://en.community.dell.com/support-forums/software-os/f/4677/t/19658436
I recently bought a cd writer and have found out it was originally meant for a dell computer - mine isn't a dell though.
The writer manual is here - http://support.dell.com/support/edocs/storage/p60335/en/index.htm
The machine is just some clone I picked up at a garage sale, it works really well except that the cd writer quit recently. It has an MS- 6738 motherboard and duron processor running Ubuntu 10.04 currently.
Will the dell cd writer work in it? So far I'm having no luck but I'm new at this so I wasn't sure if it was my error or simply not going to happen
ok I have windows XP On Both Off my computers but my other one has a dell monitor and I've tried to get it to work so many times I got lucky I think twice first time it worked but then I shut it off for the night then I had a hard time to get it to work but I finally did and after that I can't get it to work it keeps saying to set it up through the disc drive I think I haven't turned it on for a bit I'll have to check it,
but can anyone help with what I said?
Hello!my hdd failed along with everything in it.I bought a new drive to intall windows again but I will not have the original Windows now.Is there anyway I can download the original Windows files?
Thank you so much for all your help.Konstantinos Tsigkaras, Greece
If you did not make the backup media to reinstall Windows you will need to purchase the OS disc. I do not know of any place to download Windows. Since you are in Greece you may want to contact Dell Support in your area to see if you could get a Windows disc if you are still within your warranty period. If not, you can search ebay for a Windows disc or other Websites that may have them available. The link below sells disc, but I am not sure if you could order from them and have it shipped to you in Greece.
Cannot get into computer it just says Locked when I try to put my password in I cannot get any further it does not allow the mouse to work either can anyone suggest how I can unlock it so that I can put my password in please.
You have no restorable OS image backups, correct? I was going to ask about the usb password reset [that I can make with Win7Pro], however, I do not know if your OS has that feature.http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/t/604613/locked-out-on-dell-laptop-windows-81/
I am stuck on the page with the blue stip with www.dell.com written on it.
Below it is written "loading PBR for descriptor2...done"
It refuses to go beyond this point.
and welcome to the Forum
What model? Are you using the Dell Reinstallation CD or the PC Restore feature?
I have been asked to repair a dell inspiron 1420 laptop for my child. the problem is the laptop has no operting sytem or driver load at all. can any help with this I need to load my Windows 7 operating system and that appears to be working fine but i am not stuck at no device drivers were found. so i tried to used my pc to download some drivers but i am not sure of the order and i dont know how to download the drivers on my pc and apply them to my laptop since laptop has no OS
Forgive me but your post isn't making much sense. You're trying to get the Windows 7 drivers for the Dell laptop, but you can't because it has no OS. That makes no sense. If you have loaded Windows 7 on the laptop, you should be able to get online and find the necessary device drivers, as long as the native Windows driver for the laptop's network card allow you to get online. If not, you should try to download those network card drivers from a different PC or laptop and put them either on a disk or USB flash drive and load them onto the Dell laptop from there. You just need to get either the model number or the service tag number from the laptop and go to support.dell.com and you should be able to find all that you need from there, as long as Dell provides driver support for that model of laptop with Windows 7. If I am way off and this information is not what you need, please let us know and clarify what it is that you need.
Hey guys, i know a little about computer but not to much.... i have a dell inspiron 1100 laptop, the hard drive went in it, so i ordered a new hard drive, when it came in a installed it...i went to load XP from the XP cds i got with the computer from dell...all the computer tells me is "invalid system disk"..whats is going on with it...
Did you create a partition and format it?
I currently have a Dell XPS M1730 laptop that has been rendered useless with viruses. I wish to reformat/reinstall Windows 7 Ultimate x64 on it. My problem is that the original factory disc has been lost by the original owner. The original operating system on it was Windows XP and was upgraded to Win 7 Ultimate.
I want to download the drivers for the laptop from Dell's website but I am unsure if I should download the drivers for the XP version or the Vista version. There are no other driver versions available.
Any advice is greatly appreciated.
If win7 was an upgrade version, then you must have a justifying genuine operating system installed and activated which in your case was xp.http://www.techsupportforum.com/forums/f217/help-with-installing-windows-7-on-dell-laptop-742881.html

I have a dell Inspiron laptop with windows 7 64 bit with a bunch of problems ( viruses and stuff) and I wanted to install a fresh copy of windows 7. I have a copy of windows 7 64 that I used on my desktop. Can I use this on my laptop? And can I use the cd key on the bottom of my laptop For the laptop?
Thanks in advance
What model Dell laptop?
You most likely have a recovery partition that you can access to reset the laptop back to factory settings.
Start the laptop and at the Dell logo press F8 to get to the Advanced boot options
Once at the Advanced Boot Options choose "Repair your Computer" once there
you can get the Option to preform Recovery.
My Dell laptop (Windows 8) started acting up several hours ago. I can get to where I put my PIN number and the wheel starts moving and then stops and that's it.
I've read other posts about this but I am an old lady and very far from being technically savvy (but I'm terrific at following directions and Crush used to help me with everything in the past).
Thanks in advance for your assistance. You've always come through before and I've always made sure to express my appreciation.
In the meantime I ran an ePSA Pre-Boot System Assessment. The message I received was "Long Self Test Unsuccessful"

If this means anything to anyone, maybe it will help solve the problem. If not, any assistance will be GREATLY appreciated!

Update: Pulled the hard drive out, hooked up to my XP machine and formatted it. Put it back in the laptop, now get a NTLDR is missing error. Restarting and booting from a Windows 7 CD results in the same thing as above - the process hangs at "Starting Windows" page.
What's going on here? Is it BIOS? Am I looking at a new motherboard?
How can I boot my Dell Studio 1749 Laptop from either a USB or External HP CD/DVD drive in order to bypass a disabled internal CD/DVD (with stuck disk)?
And how do I create the USB Boot Drive?
The F12 boot options freeze up trying to boot my repair disk in external dvd.

New Dell with ubuntu, hum.what version win 7 do you have (oem, retail, etc)?
Hi I'm new here so please go easy I have a few problems with a Windows Dell laptop About two months ago there was a problem with the hard drive As the laptop was still under warranty I sent it back and Dell exchanged the hard drive for a new one However I now have several issues and the laptop is no longer under warranty I cannot perform refresh nor restore It tells me some files are missing and that my Windows disk will provide these files However as Windows came packaged with this laptop I don't have any such disk I also unwisely never created any restore points laziness I have tried entering my windows key into the windows site but it doesn't seem to recognise it I never had this problem before I sent my laptop back to Dell it always worked perfectly with both refresh and restore in the past My display is weird at times Sometimes the colours are strange particularly things like blues yellows and blacks When I start the laptop sometimes I get a weird white net curtain type of effect with three strips one on the left one on the right and one in the middle Other colours don't appear correctly though this seems to be erratic on some screens blue will look blue on other screens blue with look like a dirty green It is also erratic as to when it happens On some start-ups it happens on others it doesn't Plus once the laptop has been on about ten minutes it corrects itself Moving the screen can sometimes result in a fix The laptop is telling me I can't run certain programs as MSCVP dll With Problems Windows Several Laptop 8 Dell is missing I have tried reinstalling C as the Windows website suggests but nothing Please can anyone help
I start my dell laptop I get the dell loading screen and then a black screen with a blinking cursor I can access F and F but cannot get into F because windows just won t even boot up However if I put the dell diagnostic drivers disc in and go to the F option and boot from cd it will boot run all the diagnostic tests which all have passed and that s it It won t boot the windows cd or any other cd for that matter I can get into the BIOS and Dell Cannot Windows On Boot Laptop run the tests internally and again all pass and that s it That is all I can do My laptop is no longer under warranty I have no drive for a floppy disc to make a bootable windows disc I don t know what else to do I simply cannot afford to trash the hard drive or anything for that matter Can someone please help
The old black screen with blinking cursor...that's an easy one .Black Screen (fixmbr) - http://support.microsoft.com/?scid=kb;en-us;314503 You need to get to the Recovery Console and run the fixmbr command.Type in the number (1) on the line where it asks which install you want to access. At the password prompt in the Recovery Console, just hit the Enter key. When the prompt reflects "C:\Windows, etc.", just type fixmbr and hit Enter/OK (whichever).Warning comes up, reply affirmatively ("yes").Exit (after command is done), reboot.Louishttp://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/t/129939/cannot-boot-windows-on-dell-laptop/
I have a Compaq Presario V2000 laptop that got a virus and my daughter (who didn't know what she was doing :0( ...) wiped the harddrive clean and then installed the Windows XP OS that came with my Dell desktop (for Dell only). Now, the color is distorted and the page is too big for the laptop screen (it cuts off at the edges). Also, there is no sound. Is there anything that I can do to fix this, other than purchase another Windoes XP OS (which I can't afford :0(...) and install it. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks and have a BLESSED DAY.
i have that same laptop, dowload the drivers and then transfer them to either a cd or a thumb drive, then put the cd / thumb drive into the computer, and then install the drivers.
Driver page found here, i would only download the video, sound, chipset, intel/pro wireless driver, and the Synaptics Touchpad Driver, after that use windows update located under start<windows update, and then update your computer. Windows may ask you to activate it, the product key is located under the laptop
I have just opened my laptop and it's so laggy on the login screen when I login I cannot open start and open applications I cannot type it delays like 1-5 minutes I don't know what's happening and I noticed that Microsoft Edge Icon is gone missing? I tried to boot on safe mode it's still laggy. It's a 1/2 year old laptop can you guys help me figure out what's the problem
Btw, I already tried REINSTALLING WINDOWS 10 and it's always stuck at "Scanning and Repairing C: at 1%"
Thank you for writing to us!
We would suggest that you restart the system in normal mode .
1- Check and run all the updates that are pending
2- Ensure all the Drivers are installed
3- Check the task manager and disable programs from startup.
4- scan for adware and malware
5- un-install unwanted programs
6- Factory reset ( restore to factory defaults)
Kindly lets us know if this help.
I have a Dell Latitude E6520 which came with Win 7 Pro OA installed. I upgraded to Windows 10 when prompted to do so by the Windows pop-up last Autumn.
It worked pretty well for a while but there are ongoing issues with sound and with iTunes and I need these for my work so I would like to just go back to Win 7, even though more than 1 month has passed.
I tried to download the Win 7 iso to help do this, but when I tried from the Windows iso site (at Windows 7) I got the error message "The product key you've entered appears to be for software which was pre-installed by the device manufacturer. Please contact the device manufacturer for software recovery options."
I did contact Dell support but they say I would have to buy a Win7 CD from them at some cost.
Is this really necessary? I just want to revert to Win 7.
Hello Dev and welcome to Ten Forums!
The response you got from Dell is disappointing. A factory installed OS usually has a special partition reserved for reinstallation of the OS. If this is still present ( and there is no reason why it should not be) you ought be able to get back to where you were using a recovery disk or some other procedure that Dell should be able to provide.
Disk Management (right click on your start button) should show what partitions you have on the hard disk.
I have researched the TECH SUPPORT FORUMS for any ideas how to fix my problem and none of them work I've tried rebooting from the recovery disks and they don't work It won't start in safe mode or any of the other options there and I can't get it to boot to Windows Boot 7 Laptop Dell Won't the last known good configuration Needless to say I don't even come close to getting the option to restore the computer to a previous point I ran a system test holding down the FN key while turning the computer on and everything passed so I'm Dell Laptop Won't Boot Windows 7 pretty sure it's just Windows not loading completely The computer starts to boot but freezes with Dell Laptop Won't Boot Windows 7 a blue screen not completely blue - not screen of death it has some windows type swirls and a large cursor If my recovery disks don't work - Dell Laptop Won't Boot Windows 7 what options do I have Other than a factory reset I'm at a loss what to try next Any ideas HELP Using a Dell Inspiron with Windows Home Edition
What happens when you do try and enter Safe mode? Does the computer lock up?
What happens when you run Windows Repair via the CD?
I just got the Windows 7 upgrade package for my laptop, which currently has Vista. The package consists of the Upgrade Assisant DVD (which has the drivers and applications) and the Vista to Windows 7 upgrade dvd. The directions from Dell are to start with the Upgrade Assistant, and then use the upgrade dvd.
Would it be better to use the upgrade dvd and do a clean install rather than an upgrade? Is that possible with the Dell media?
Dell normally provides for a step where it removes old application versions, drivers etc before it upgrades.
If you tried to do a clean install you would still be faced with researching what applications, drivers etc. may cause you a problem.
Why not follow the Dell instructions and see how it goes?
hello i new to this forum and i m having more than a few problems with my laptop lol anyways first i reinstalled windows mainly because the wireless card quit working that was the Windows Dell XP Laptop problems first Dell Laptop Windows XP problems time i reinstalled it in my laptop and its about years old so everything seemed to run fine after i also installed all the drivers too the problem i am having is the computer won t turn off properly when i either press the power button or when i go to start and select turn off it will go to the desktop background and thats it so i have to use quick shutdown by just press and hold then the computer after a certain amount of time running most of the programs will crash that are running and it won t let me run any new programs and the final problem is everytime Dell Laptop Windows XP problems i turn off and then start my laptop back up all the setting reset to default the most common one i can think of when i choose all the icon in the bottom right hand corner to hide they reappear again after new start-up i also have the low virtual memory error that keeps popping up every so often btw its a dell inspiron with windows xp any help would be great thank you nbsp
Might be a rootkit or a virus.
I was hoping that someone could give me some advice on this problem I'm having with my computer before I take it to a store to get repaired if I can't solve it on my own I usually leave Dell Windows. Laptop: Not loading my laptop on overnight and since shutting the top of it cuts off the internet connection the next morning I usually have to reboot the computer to get the connection to start up again Well I did that today and everything was going fine Dell loading screen came up but then so did the Boot Menu It gave me some options Safe Mode Safe Mode with Networking Safe Mode with Command Prompt Last Known Good Configuration Start Windows Normally I tried every option even letting the timer count down to start windows itself but it would go to Window's loading page then once that was done it jumped to a blue screen with words on it that I couldn't read then sent itself back to the Dell loading page and the Boot Menu all over again I've tried letting it run itself over and over but it doesn't work and I've let it stay turned off for Dell Laptop: Not loading Windows. over hours I usually can think of something to do in this situation but it seems nearly impossible since it isn't letting me do anything at all Courtney
what type of internet connection - dial up, dsl, cable, other? are you behind a router? firewall? network?
try going into your event viewer and check the system or application logs for errors.
My Dell Inspiron laptop developed Windows restore Dell on cannot I Laptop XP the I cannot restore Windows XP on Dell Laptop following fault after powering on it started to boot into Windows and then blue-screened It has Windows XP with SP manufacturer-installed I bought it from new but it came with no install or repair disks I contacted Dell and they said the laptop was beyond their support time and they would not send me any media So I attempted a repair using an XP Home installation disk This was one I downloaded and burned myself quite legally as I have an MSDN subscription However I have no COA key for it I figured the laptop's product key would be the right one to use since I was repairing not installing I booted with this CD and chose the Install Option and then R epair When prompted for the key I entered it carefully but it was rejected as invalid I continued by choosing not to enter a key and the repair completed On trying to boot from the HD again this now succeeds as far as the Welcome screen If I choose an account with admin privileges it prompts me to activate Windows If I choose Yes it gives me just the desktop wallpaper and a mouse pointer - no icons or Start menu so I can do nothing If I boot in Safe mode I can log on as quot Administrator quot This gives me a Start button So I go to run quot Activate Windows quot but it says quot Cannot run this in Safe Mode quot If I ever get to run the windows activator no doubt it will reject my laptop's product key However it shouldn't because the quot old quot windows is still there with all the user accounts I tried to follow the instructions at this site Update your Windows product key - Microsoft Windows to update my product key I downloaded the utility but it has to be run on the laptop in question as it needs to check files on the HD I can't boot into normal Windows to run it and it won't run in Safe Mode I'm wondering now whether to try and borrow a DELL Windows XP Home installation CD Perhaps if I try again to repair Windows with such a disk it would accept the laptop's product key If this is worth trying does it matter whether it's the install CD that came with any Dell machine that runs XP Home or must it be one that was supplied with an Inspiron laptop Any ideas on this or any other approaches I can try will be most welcome Thank you
Dell has been very good at furnishing the installation discs . . did yu try here:
A borrowed Dell disc should work fine . . Dell discs are not specific to the pc . the key problem is likely because it is for OEM installation versus Retail.
My situation may look funny but please do help. I have purchased Dell Inspiron online from Dell website, the laptop arrived with windows 8 pre installed (Home edition). I had trouble installing few softwares, hence I downgraded my laptop to windows 7.. The mistake is that I didnt take a back up of the product key nor did I create a recovery disk. Now I am running on windows 7.. Can Anyone help me how do I go back to Windows 8.. I checked with Dell they said they have to send the recovery disk to my postal address. Which I am not currently residing.. Can anyone help me solve my problem.. Thanks a ton in advance..

Thank you for writing to us!
We would need the service tag to the system.
You could also complete the activation over the phone by calling Microsoft.
Kindly Private message the same .
My dell inspiron laptop with i3 processor shows crashed. Startup repair says can't repair and showed error list.

I've ried using the Microsoft Media tool, but it won't recognize any of the flash drives I've tried using my work laptop. I created an ISO flash drive, but I got a black screen message that BOOTMGR (???) was missing. When I turn on the power it opens to a blue RECOVERY screen.
What else can I try?

What else can I try? Remove the usb key, turn on you notebook pressing repatrly ctrl till a boot menu appears. With arrows select Hard Disk and press Enter.
Media Creation tool works inside Windows and it doesn't need any usb key too, it can upggrade directly as is Window Update choosing update now
If doesn0t work, complete the recovery sequence for gettin back control on laptop.
USB Media key is useful for upgrading more devices one after other

Do you see a post (BIOS) screen on intial boot up? If not then you could try opening it up to see if the video cable is not connected correctly. It could also be the bulb behind the screen that has gone.
What happens if you plug a monitor into the laptop (if you are able)?
Just recently had an issue with intermittent conectivity to my WIFI router with my Dell XPS Laptop Windows OS Started right after some Windows updates I reverted back and restored to previous settings and the problem would go away Laptop / Dell Windows WIFI Intermittent / 7 for a day - Intermittent WIFI / Windows 7 / Dell Laptop and then start up again Would not even connect to the router and give local connectivity other laptops iphones and ipads had no problems connecting at all I was out of ideas While searching I came accross this post on Techguy org Thread is now closed but I wanted to reach out to the Kazanov and let them know I found out the problem and made some changes to the WIFI router that apparantly has fixed the problem weeks running with no issues I will post original post at the end of this post To fix the problem I changed the CHANNEL on the WIFI router FROM AUTO TO Channel A friend worked on a military base and managed over wifi connections and he said that many times for a reason unknown to either of us some laptops would not connect to channel or Intermittent WIFI / Windows 7 / Dell Laptop and these are the default channels for a WIFI router set to AUTO Just wanted to come back and post the solution to the post below And if the Administrator can open the old thread back up and update it so Kasanov knows the solution that would be great Here is the original post by Kasanov which is the exact same problem computer OS as I have Kasanov Wrote Intermittent WiFi connection I have a dell desktop with Windows One day wifi started working intermittent I connect to my signal then after - minutes it disconnects Two scenarios The icon tray signals all is well Yet no connection When I double click at the wireless dash board it say no internet connection The icon tray signals an exclamation mark quot limited access quot Then it takes several attempts to reconnect and about - minutes minutes later it reconnects for just - minutes again I am able to connect to my Linksys router from other computers in my home even while i am having problems with that one computer I even tried the wireless adapter with other computers and it seems the problem is not with the adapter I checked for channels interference and it seems there is no conflict I am out of ideas nbsphttps://forums.techguy.org/threads/intermittent-wifi-windows-7-dell-laptop.1036519/
