Preferred Solution: Hard Drive SMART Check: Failed

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/directdownload.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hi, The 24 character error code does confirm a Smart failure and would indicate that the Hard Drive is failing and needs to be replaced. If your notebook is still under warranty, contact HP and arrange to have the drive replaced - If needed, you can check your warranty status Here. If you live in the US, contact HP Here. If you are in another part of the world, start Here. If you are out of warranty and would like a guide on replacing the Hard Drive yourself, please let me know. Regards, DP-K

Unfortunatly this error indicates that the hard disk needs replacement. You could call HP and setup a service or take the unit to a authorized service center.

The electronics on the disk-drive have 'S.M.A.R.T'.SMART does real-time monitoring of many characteristics of the disk-drive, e.g.,* how many milli-seconds from "off" to "ready",* maximum temperature,* number of hours of usage,* number of "bad" sectors that have been mapped to some "spare" sectors,* and so on. So, a "SMART failure" is an indication that the "observed" values have exceeded the "normal" values, i.e., "out-of-range". Take the notice as a warning that your disk-drive is "dying". Google-search for 'download SPECCY free'.Download, install, and run it, to look at all the measurements in the SMART categories. Make a "backup" of your files/music/pictures/bookmarks onto an external disk-drive,or buy a brand-new disk-drive, connect it, and "clone" your current disk-drive onto the new disk-drive,and reconfigure your computer to boot from the new disk-drive. Is your disk-drive relatively "new", e.g., less than 2 years old?If so, it may still be warrantied by the manufacturer,i.e., ship them your disk-drive, and they will ship you an *EMPTY* replacement drive. You'll need to reinstall Windows, and reload your files from your "backup".

So this really irritates me because I just spent hundreds of dollars sending my laptop to HP last year because the hard drive completely failed. I have a 1TB hybrid hard drive and 22Gb solid state used for caching.  When I booted up my computer Intel Rapid Storage Technology said there was an issue.  When I opened it, it says that the status of: SATA disk (932 GB)(System) Accelerated, is Failed.  My SATA_Array_0001 22GB is fine though.  So I ran a System Quick Test, everything passed except Hard Drive Short DST Check: FAILEDFAILURE ID: Q4MP7Q-6RA82U-MFGJWK-60W303 This is weird because other than the computer telling me there is something wrong every time I restart it, It seems to run just fine.  Im just worried because I don't want it to randomly die on me one day.

Hi there @nmulji,  Thank you for joining in on the HP Support Forums and Welcome! This is a great place to ask questions, find solutions and get help from others in the community! I read your post on the HP Support Forums and understand that the Hard Drive in your HP ENVY TouchSmart 15t-j100 Select Edition CTO Notebook PC failed the Short DST Check.  SMART (Self-Monitoring Analysis and Reporting Technology System) uses a technology known as predictive failure analysis to tell you when a hard drive failure is imminent. Have you tried to Restore the BIOS? If not, please try this step first. Then, just to be on the safe side, back up your data that way it does not get lost. However, there might be certain conditions that cause a hard drive failure message to display when a problem does not exist (a false positive). To fix false positive hard drive errors, please try updating the hard drive firmware. You can check whether an update is available by going to the  Get software and drivers page. You will need to put in your Model Number and then click the links that pertain to the computer configuration and see if a hard drive update is available.  You could also try to do a  Disk Defragment to consolidate files and move them to another section of the drive where errors are less likely to occur. Did this reply resolve your issue or answer your question? If yes, then please share the good news! Let others know this reply was helpful by clicking the Accept as Solution button. You can also show your appreciation by clicking the Thumbs Up. If you require further assistance, I would be more than happy to continue to help you. Please re-post with the results of the troubleshooting. Thanks!

Hello I upgrade my pc with SSD everything seem to go fine but of my TB drive giving me a Smart error now i wonder if SSD has anything to do with Drives failing My theory is that SSD runs on a flash based chip it is very stable but mean time it has huge access point of data that why it is fast The reason i am thinking that SSD is killing my other drives is because my setup is a Media center Software such as windows media center and media browser keep accessing my TB Hitachi drive for movies TV show and so on SSD in my opinion is running other ! SSD SMART failed Hard drive Error Can ? drives Kill other drive to max point of spin and read write in same time which could caused these drive either over heat or over used that is just a theroy of mine Can SSD Kill other drives ? Hard drive failed SMART Error ! MY Setup Media center pc Can SSD Kill other drives ? Hard drive failed SMART Error ! with TB Hard drive Hitachi and GB SSD drive Error Message Smart error bad backup and replace Thank you

A:Can SSD Kill other drives ? Hard drive failed SMART Error !

Ther's not a chance that an SSD caused that. Really, what is a mechanical hard drive supposed to do? They spin up and read/write data. A Mechaninal hard drive would be reading/writing more if the OS was installed on it. That is constant.

Had this laptop for about 6 years, had a few issues in the past, but nothing major like this. After, I ran a system dianostic, the result shown that the Hard drive short DST failed. Not totally sure how to do a recovery, I do have the Recovery Discs, so I searched up how to run the discs; turned on the system- press f11-  window loading files- window starting- then it just stuck on a window blue screen with nothing but the cursor. Can I even use the Recovery Discs? I want to replace the old HDD with a new SSD, but I'm not sure if I have to install a new OS or can I recover the old hard drive OS and transfer to the SSD?

A:Hard Drive failure (Hard Drive Short DST Check: Failed)

DST:Fail means  the hard drive has failed and will need to be replaced. If you are still in warranty HP will send a replacement. If not a retail laptop SATA hard drive can be used. Just be sure to get one of at least equal capacity as the original in order to use Recovery Discs. It can be larger, but not smaller capacity. For instance if you have a 500GB hdd you could use a 750GB hdd but not a 320GB hdd.

Hi, Sadly to say, the HDD on your machine failed. The following link shows its specs:          http://h20564.www2.hp.com/hpsc/doc/public/display?docId=c03663774 You can replace larger (capatity) and faster HDD. Any standard 2.5" SATA HDD on the market today can do the job. You need Recovery media to rebuild your machine. Did you create one ? Otherwise, please try:              http://support.hp.com/us-en/document/bph07143 Regards.

Hi @Himanshu9001, Thank you for visiting the HP Forums! A great place where you can find solutions for your issues with help from the community! I have looked into your issue about your HP Pavilion Notebook and getting the start up error message failure ID. This error is DST Short Test Failure code. What that means is your Hard drive could be failing. I recommend  the first thing you should do is back-up all your personal files etc as soon as you can. Wondering if maybe reseating the Hard Drive would help. After you reseat it I would run the Hardware Diagnostics again. Please get back to me how this goes. If this post helps you to resolve the issue you can click the Thumbs up icon to show gratitude! Thanks.

My laptop isn't starting , when i open it i get the hp logo then a black screen , when i made a fast system test the hard drive short DST check failed with a failer ID: PLW6J2-6SL88N-MFPWXG-60RR03 and a Product ID: E2G95EA#ABV.my main concern is the data stored on the hard disk what can i do to get the laptop working a don't loose the data ?

A:hard drive short DST check failed

Stop using the laptop. Replace the hard drive with a new one. Get a SATA to usb adapter to connect the old drive (which you will remove) to another computer to try to salvage data. There is a good chance data is still recoverable this way.

Hi,Sadly to say: Most of the time the 24 char failure id indicates the HDD is failing and need to be replaced. Is it still under warranry ? Getting black screen error boot device not found/no OS daily.  Been trying to do a backup which then results in this error. Ran UEFI quick test which gave failure ID: GK763H-6KA88D-MFPX0K-60S703 The quick system test passed but gave SOFTWARE ERROR for the HD Short DST check. Please advise.

Hi there, I am getting the following error message on bootup. HP ENVY m6-1188ca Notebook PC Hard Drive Short DST Check: FAILEDFAILURE ID: GU71BT-6AA892-XD7X1F-60RK03  System Restore, System Refresh, Automatic Repairs, no recovery options seem to work. I keep getting to this screen only and cannot enter Windows. Is this a strictly hardware issue for certain? What are my options and next steps? Laptop is way past warranty. Thanks in advance for all responses.

My Hp Pavillion Beats Laptop is getting a Hard-Drive Quick Test Failire ID# U4QDW8-7G584T-MFPV7F-60UR03 and the product ID is - G6R14UA#ABA. Looks like I am going to have to replace hard-drive and operating system, but since the HD is not functioning, I cannot access the OS installation and I no longer have the recovery disks. Does HP provide the orignal OS upon request? I kept getting a blue screen with an error code 0xc0000185. I ordered the recovery Disks from HP but when I went to recover the machine, it sort of reads the cd and then I get the HP logo and the circle just spins and spins. We left it alone for hours and nothing. I ran a Hard Drive Test and it said Hard Drive Short DST Check: FAILEDthen gave this Failure ID: 63621R-7AQ87K-MFPV6K-60XL03Product K7U05UA HARD DRIVE 1 SYSTEM EXTENSIVE TEST: FAILED Any idea what I can do? It is just out of warranty- Of Course.

A:Pavilon Failed Hard Drive Short DST Check

Hi, The 24 character error id does confirm a failure of the short Disk Self Test and would indicate that the Hard Drive is failing and needs to be replaced.  This is also consistent with the issues you describe. If you would like a guide on replacing the Hard Drive yourself, please let me know. Regards, DP-K

First off I have a HP 2000 Notebook PC with Windows 8 and I used Internet Explorer 10.

Processor Name : AMD E-300APU with Radeon ™ HD Graphics.

A few days ago, my computer started getting slower & slower, not responding, freezing up and even going to a blue screen before coming back to the page I was at.

So I put it in Safe Mode with Networking and ran Malwarebytes full scan - nothing.

Then I hit F2 at reboot and ran some of the tests on there - Battery was Okay, memory was okay, but this one failed :

Hard Drive Short DST Check - Software Error

Failure ID : RSG080-6P579C-MFGJXG-60VS03
Product ID : D1E80UA#ABA

Does this mean I need to update with windows update, that there isn't enough memory or does it mean my Hard Drive needs to be replaced? This laptop is only 1-1 1/2 years old....

A:Hard Drive Short DST Check Failed - Software Error?!

Your hard drive is probably failing. I would get your important data off it as soon as possible. After your important data is off download Seatools for Windows and do a diagnostic to confirm the hard drive failure.

You can't "fix" bad sectors.

You can however, decide if it's worth spending anymore time on an old 80GB hard drive with bad sectors that can fail at any moment.
Whatever your time is worth to you, only you can decide.

On some Toshiba's I've worked on, including my own Tecra, I press Escape and Function 1 to get a boot menu and with an XP CD in, there's a three second only window in which to "press any key" when the prompt appears. Are you seeing that prompt when you boot from CD? You might also benefit from formatting that hard disk in the other machine if you already started to install on it.

A:HDD error "1720-SMART hard drive detects imminent failure attribute failed: #83" ... failing?

The fundamentals still apply:

for every partition ?X?
chkdsk ?X? /f /r
The /R will remap bad sectors in an effort to avoid future I/o errors.

a} fix all partitions
b} get the SMART data and save it for reverence (it will not be reset to zero by chkdsk)
c} view the SMART data every day
d} look for increasing statistics

PLAN on getting a new HDD asap

Sfiir, welcome to the forum. The error messages that are receiving are telling you that your hard drive has failed.  Your only option is to replace it.  You should replace it with a hard drive the same size or larger so the System Recovery media will work. Please click the Thumbs up + button if I have helped you and click Accept as Solution if your problem is solved.

My laptop wouldn't restart after I updated it and a hard disk error came up so I ran a hardware diagnostic test and it said the smart check passed but the short DST failed. I don't know what to do now.

A:Passed smart check but failed short DST hardware diagnostic

Did you do the extensive Test? If so, and you got the same response: Failed. I'm afraid, you might need a new Hard Drive. If your PC is under warranty, call HP Support, they will fix it, but you will have to send it to them.  If out of warranty, you will have to purchase a Hard Drive and replace it or have someone install it for you, like a computer technician. Hope I've been of some help, I'm not a computer expert,  but the same thing happened to me a few weeks ago. HP Supporters are wonderful here. From what I've learned on here, I am just trying to help out another.  Hope it works out for you.

With drive sectors, health drive smart hard 2 bad my is good but shows data my Seagate GB sata hard drive the re-allocated sectors count shows bad sectors in the Ubuntu disk utility for the smart data In this multi-boot desktop PC the XP with a my hard drive smart data shows 2 bad sectors, but drive health is good drive monitor program called Active Smart shows this drive health status as good including that reallocated sectors count item so is this not to worry about for now or what I do monitor the hard drive temperature which does stay cool enough in the seventies up to about F Or can this be caused by mixed partitioning methods since the new way is now align to MiB and not align to cylinder as it was I used the GParted tool to create and change partitions when it was set as default to align to cylinder but then I recently used both my Vista Disk Manager and the newer version of GParted to re-size some of the partitions which both now use that align to MiB method by default which often has near MB gaps between partitions then nbsp

I was running Win XP which finally failed and I was able to enter in safe mode (only, no networking) and ran all the tests I could think of. Hard drive is ok and so I attempted to repair WinXP from the installation CD. However, the PC failed to shut down and restart so I eventually force closed it. Now it won't even load past the initial black windows screen, don't even get the option of going into safe mode.

Is there any way I (or someone) could access the hard drive to retrieve the data? I guess I could reinstall the OS but don't want to do that yet as I'll definitely lose the data.

Any advice would be appreciated.

Thanks.

A:Win XP failed, repair failed -- can I access hard drive?

Sure, there are many ways. Depending on what you want in the end decides how to proceed.

If you have a lot of space free on the drive, you could boot off a linux dvd and create a new partition. You'd have to shrink the existing, then make a new one. Then you could just copy over the data from the old one to the new one. Then reinstall windows onto the old partition, and copy your stuff back (then delete the partition and expand the remaining to fill the rest of the space).

You can also just boot off a linux disk and copy it to a thumb drive or whatever.

Or you could remove the hard drive and place it in another computer.

Also, I'm not convinced you lose the data if you install Windows again. I'm pretty sure you can install without formatting the drive. Your programs won't work, but it shouldn't overwrite any of your data. This is a non-ideal solution though.

Hi, The 24 character error code is a failure of the short Disk Self Test and would indicate that the Hard Drive is failing and needs to be replaced. As your notebook shipped with Windows 10, it is probably still under warranty, so contact HP and arrange to have the drive replaced - If needed, you can check your warranty status Here. If you live in the US, contact HP Here. If you are in another part of the world, start Here. Regards, DP-K

A:Hard Drive Short DST Check : WARNING and Optimized DST Check...

Yes you need to replace the hard drive. Since you have upgraded to Windows 10 it is very easy to get recovery media directly from the Microsoft Media Creation Tool. For most people, the problem is not physically swapping out the hard drive, but restoring the operating system since they do not have recovery disks. Post back if you want a service manual and/or video showing the replacement, purchase options for a new hard drive and step-by-step for restoring Windows 10. We would need the full model...g6-????

I just started getting an error...  Smart Hard Disc Error  on my desktop and it is only 1 year old.  what could be the problem.  is there an easy fix?  It cannot have a hard drive problem already, it is not used everyday.

A:smart hard drive error

Hopefully the disc is not failing, but the error message does say that the computer is having a problem talking to that disc. Shut down the computer and then turn it back on.  As it is first turning on enter into BIOS (by tapping F10 or ESC).  Under the Advanced or Diagnostic tab you should find the facility to run a test on the Hard Drive.  Post back with the details of any error messages. #HPExpertDay

Hi I own a gateway laptop model: P-6860FX. It's great for gaming but in the past couple weeks it's been giving me the SMART failure on my recovery drive, and now it's giving it to me on my C: drive as well! The laptop has been running slower and slower and I even tried reinstalling windows 7 and wiping my old files out to maybe speed it up but that didn't work. At this point I'm sure I need to replace my hard drive which brings me to my question, can I just pull the one in there out, replace it, then install windows 7 on the new one and be able to run my computer?

Hi nbsp As stated I have an HP envy laptop that I purchased year ago Just days ago my warranty has ended At the same point in time I was also trying to roll back to a previous windows install as there was a pesky app that was installed when I lend the laptop to my friend When I got it back it works just fine but it had that malware in it that I want to remove nbsp So I fired up system restore and go on restoring It finished doing so until nbsp it restarts When it restarts I was stuck in the loading screen with the HP logo for hours to which I decide to fire up the restore through the recovery media All works well until I got stuck in the installation I got stuck at When I searched on the internet why the reason might be because the wi-fi adapter is still on I am able to open it SM... Long Short DST check but Disk DST and passed Hard failed, up and take it off for a moment But because I need to go to work I decided against it I turned the laptop off and set off nbsp When I got back I can't even let it proceed to the installation saying that there's an issue with teh windows install and it needs to reboot Did that same thing several times and nothing happened nbsp Then I decided to go to BIOS and do the hard disk check It passed the SMART test but failed the Short DST as well as Long DST It produced the error code nbsp MFUC T- RG K-CD WMG- DK nbsp Is it possible for me to resolve the issue by my own through another reinstall Or is the HDD really is ruined If this is the case I'm probably just going to go ahead and replace it with an SSD

A:Hard Disk Short DST and Long DST check failed, but passed SM...

Whenever the Hard Disk Short DST test fails that indicates that the Hard Disk Drive has failed and that requires a replacement to resolve the issue This issue could be due to Application or driver conflicts, virus issues, file corruptions due to incompatible applications, improper shutdowns, update failures due to conflicts, sudden power surges, if notebook is dropped etc.. HP will provide a replacement Hard Disk Drive if the Notebook warranty is Active, If not you need buy a SATA Hard Disk Drive from a retail shop nearby Please make sure you are getting at least equal capacity as the original one in order to use Recovery Disks. If you need you can buy a larger, but not smaller capacity Hard Disk Drive. For example if you have a 500GB Hard Disk Drive you can upgrade it to 750GB Hard Disk Drive but not 320GB Hard Disk Drive Please try the below shown troubleshooting steps once:Step 01. Remove the battery and unplug the AC/Power AdapterStep 02. Press and hold the Power button for more than 30 SecondsStep 03. Plug in the AC/Power Adapter (leave the Battery out for now)Step 04. Press the Power button and check if the Unit works normal If the above mentioned steps does not help, then you can try reseating the Hard Drive on your Notebook If the issue persists again please Contact HP if your HP Notebook is under warranty, HP would replace the Hard Disk Drive and provide you a Recovery media to restore factory operating system after replacement (if you've not yet created Recovery Discs/USB Media) Note: Back up all the personal data to an external drive if it's possible. Otherwise you could connect the failed HDD via SATA to USB adapter with another PC or same PC after replacement of HDD & re-installation of OS and try copying /recovering the files. I am working on a Toshiba Satellite Laptop for a friend and am getting the following message on restart:

SMART Failure predicted on Hard Drive 0 HITACHI_DK23EA-60-(PM) . . . A failure may be imminent.
Press F1 to continue.

If I press F1 it goes into Windows and all is well. Is this message a serious issue? Is there anything to do to check thsi out or do I just actually need to replace th HD?

As always, thank you in advance for any help.

It seems every thread I start I hard may do? the I ocurred drive fail. saying should What Event SMART always begin by saying i'm sorry if I put this on the wrong section so let's just skip that part xD Anyway my friends laptop which has different specs from that one a ghz dual core a M series GPU and gb RAM started getting this SMART event ocurred thing like years ago So being a dumba back then I thought formatting reinstalling OS would solve the problem So I did Installed W HP x used Driver Genius to install all drivers and SURPRISE the error was still there So he kept the computer as SMART Event ocurred saying the hard drive may fail. What should I do? it was and surprisingly it survived all these years Nothing happened really he just used his laptop for his usual stuff with SMART Event ocurred saying the hard drive may fail. What should I do? no problems whatsoever weird But just recently he asked me to install W HP x so he could use Sony Vegas Pro for some reason Vegas only exists for x and if there is a x I can't find it So I did and installed it and then the problems started The laptop is now crashing frequently recovering from it in like seconds every time It works I guess and you can copy around and mess with stuff on the computer but after awhile it eventually crashes for - seconds I have no idea why this is happening and only then I thought of his SMART event error so I downloaded WD diagnostic tool clicked the quot view SMART data quot button and everythin was right except for quot re-allocated sector count quot which was at value at worst and at threshold could this last formatting fried his hard drive for good His warranty was gone even before he ever had the SMART event he has the laptop for like years now Is it because of the x windows Is there a logical reason for it not work properly on this laptop Or was the excessive formatting that damaged the hard drive for good Thank you for your time

A:SMART Event ocurred saying the hard drive may fail. What should I do?

I would immediately backup all data to a different hard drive.

A reallocated sector count means that one or more sectors on a hard drive are bad. Every modern hard drive has spare sectors available and the bad sectors are "reallocated" (transferred) to a spare good sector. But once you run out of spare sectors, the hard drive will usually suffer a sudden and catastrophic failure.

I believe the hard drive was already in a near failure status when you formatted and installed the x64 operating system. That is what probably pushed the drive over the edge. But I also believe the drive was going to fail anyway even if you hadn't installed the x64 OS.

Had some problems with my lap top freezing and then going to a blue screen error message.  Told me that I did not have a hard drive or an operating system.  Usually just turning off and resting made everything OK.  Now I get the error message that my hard drive has failed the SMART test and is in danger of crashing -- I have backed up everything but now what do I need to do?

A:SMART Failure Predicted on Hard Drive Disk 2

I just wanted to add that I understand that hardware problems are typically not caused by malware, but this was so sudden and the computer still works so well that I just want to be sure this isn't caused by some sort of malware. The computer's hard drive does have a small partition for Recovery, which I assume is what is being referred to as 'hard drive disk 2". If the Hijack This log is clean and the hardware problem is being caused by something else, do you know anywhere or anyone you could possibly refer me to for help? I heard that if the problem is just with the recovery partition, as long and it's never actually used things might be okay.

If this turns out to have nothing to do with malware, I'm sorry that I wasted your time. I know that you're all really busy and I really appreciate you taking the time to look this over for me. Thank you again!

I've used HDDGuardian for years on Windows 7 with no problems. Since upgrading to Windows 10, I've noticed that the process exits itself after a certain period of time (when the screen saver comes on, or when the computer goes to sleep). In typical fashion (not exclusive to this software), the tray icon remains there but disappears as soon as you mouse over it (because the process has ended).

I reinstalled HDDGuardian (was running 0.62, the current version already), since Win10 was an upgrade, not a fresh install. The problem did not go away.

So I decided to switch to DiskCheckup, but the problem persists - the process exists after a certain period of time.

No other resident software (tray icon or not) has this issue.

Is there something about windows 10 that HD monitoring software makers haven't updated to enable compatibility/proper functioning?

Anyone here using one of the two pieces of SW above, or any other disk monitoring software, successfully?

TIA

I have a 466 mhz Compaq Deskpro with Windows 2000 loaded on it. When I boot the computer I get the following message: "1720-smart hard drive detects imminent failure. Your hard drive is detecting an imminent failure. To ensure no data loss, backup contents and replace this hard disk."
I've tried 3 different hard drives, flashed the bios, upgraded the bios and yet the error message still remains. When I hit F1 the system boots into Win 2k fine. Any suggestions on how to get rid of this error would be appreciated.

go into your bios and disable the SMART drive feature for a few days, and then re-enable it. Just a guess, but it can't hurt.

Good luck,

A:1720 - SMART hard drive detects imminent failure

Hi VentureForth,Pro hard drive recovery is VERY expensive. That doesn't sound like an option. I have had some success using Norton's system works. It can look at the drive and see if things can be recovered. Your local guys may have done that. You can try to boot to a DOS boot disk and navigate over to you data. The key there is drive recognition. All Windows/DOS fixes need to at least see the drive. I would also take a shot with the manufacturer's software. Western Digital has data lifeguard tools. Let me also point you here: Leurgy's hard drive postThis post has all types of hard drive info. As a last resort, try hard drive CPR. Don't laugh, I have seen this work many times. With the computer OFF, remove the hard drive and rap it on the side (The side 90 degrees from where you plug it in - not on its top or bottom). When the drive has ran for long periods of time and then gets cut off for an extended period, I have seen the drive arm get stuck in the parked position. This is a do at your own risk thing and should be done only when you are sure the drive has to be replaced.Question to you... Is the hard drive clicking as it tries to start?Good luck, Rigel

Hi I have a Dell XPS laptop which for whatever reason decided one day not to boot I took the opportunity to do a backup and full restore using Dell DataSafe which crashed and got stuck at On attempting to restart my computer I receive an error message from SMART that my hard drive is about to fail and despite me furiously tapping f to enter safe mode the error screen always overrides the safe boot menu which I sometimes see for half a second but never long enough to do anything about it The backup I did using DataSafe prior to my first system restore is on a partition went to a partition on my C drive so I'm loathed to switch restore SMART detection with Hard Drive and Problem system Help! out the HDD completely at this point I just want to boot in safe mode so that I can move my backup to my external HDD but I can see absolutely no way to do so I Help! It is a fake virus and I have it too! Fortunately I have my trusty iPad!
Anyway, do a google search on SMART HDD and you will see what I am talking about.
I ended up having to buy PC Tools ($40 Australian) to get rid of the virus though I am not 100% sure if it is completely gone.

I have hopefully pasted in the link I am referring to.
For my particular issue I think I am going to have to reload the OS. At present I am backing up to DVDs because any USBs or external HDD is not recognised.
The good news is that once you follow the instructions and unhide your data should still be there. Good luck.

A:SMART imminent hard drive failure error message

Hi celkiar04 and welcome to TSF !

The best solution would be to attach the drive to another computer. Is this a laptop or a desktop ? Is this a SATA or an IDE drive ?

If it's a regular 3.5'' drive then simply hook it as a slave on another computer. If it's a 2.5'' laptop drive then you'll need a 2.5'' USB enclosure or a 2.5'' to 3.5'' IDE adapter.

Once you've backed up your files, you can run the manufacturer's diagnostic utility on the hard drive, though usually when you start getting S.M.A.R.T. error messages the only option left is to replace the drive.

How serious is this? I'm running on a Dell laptop with a Intel(R) ICH9M-E/M SATA AHCI Controller.

It is saying that I should back up all of my important files because of possible hard drive failure.

PLEASE HELP? I don't know how to fix this because I don't know what it means.

A:Hard drive is reporting a Smart Event error message

It telling you your hard drive is on its way out. You can try running a check disk and see if that helps. But to be on the safe side you should back up your personal files.

Xp would not start because my hard drive went south. At least that's what Dell says. They got into my system to take a look see, and the conversation lasted all but a few minutes. Apparently that was the problem the whole time and i didn't know it. I have a refurbished one on order and hopefully it will be here soon. Gonna do the surgery myself. It looks pretty easy. I think installing the new burner was a little more diffucult. I didn't want to spend a whole lot because i'm gonna get a new computer in February. Any advise would be appreciated.

A:XP failed because hard drive failed....

Remember when installing the drive to unplug the computer and take out the battery if it is a laptop. Also avoid carpet or any static.

Hi! I'm wondering if anyone can help me.

On booting the computer the other day the S.M.A.R.T diagnostic program suddenly came on saying that a "hard drive failure may be imminent", when I open up Intel Matrix storage console it says that the hard drive in port 0 has had a S.M.A.R.T event recorded against it but the one in port. 2 is"normal".

Is port 0 the volume with the operating system on it and if so what would be the best way to back up the drive and does anyone know how to change the hard drive and how much approximatly would this cost ?.

Thanks for any help inadvance.
Paul.

A:Satellite Pro P200 - Smart error "Hard drive failure imminent"

Hi!

In my opinion you should backup all data as fast as possible. In worst case you could the HDD could completely die and then you are not able to backup the data on it.

After this you should exchange the HDD. It?s depending on the HDD model that you buy how much it will cost but HDDs are not so expensive these days. I think it be possible to get one for 50 Euros.

Bye

My hard drive failed last Saturday reading quot operating system not found readable) hard drive? recovery an old (failed vista using of new a partition still Installing the drive on but quot BIOS testing resulted in error Installing vista on a new hard drive using the recovery partition of an old (failed but still readable) drive? replace hard drive At this point the drive won t boot but data can still be read I have a new hard drive The backup disk I made for Vista isn t working I thought of borrowing one from a friend but my OEM key on the bottom has completely worn off Installing vista on a new hard drive using the recovery partition of an old (failed but still readable) drive? HP says they cannot help and Microsoft wants me to pay for a replacement key I d like to avoid that if possible Is there any way to use the recovery partition on the old drive to install Vista on the new drive My laptop has two hard drive bays but I only have one caddy so ideally I d like to connect it using an enclosure Also I do have access to another computer that I could use as a quot go-between quot if needed For example if it s possible to simply copy and paste the recovery partition files I could use the enclosure to copy them from the old drive to the working computer then put the new drive in the enclosure and copy the files onto that Any advice appreciated Thanks

I have what I believe is a probably Hard Disk failiure; however, the Windows utility provides different output than the error codes provided by the System level check. The below is from my OS check:Microsoft Windows [Version 6.1.7601]Copyright (c) 2009 Microsoft Corporation. All rights reserved.C:\Users\user>wmicwmic:root\cli>diskdrive get statusStatusOKwmic:root\cli> It seems to indicate status as OK. However, the system level Hardware Test before booting shows the following:Failiure ID is: 9PMPKK-5B284T-XD002K-60QS03Product ID is XG809UA#ABA  I assume the OS level SMART Test is less reliable, then? Thanks!

Hi navedalamalam,
2000-0151 error indicates your hard disk drive (HDD) has failed and may be nearing the end of its life. Please backup the data from the system if it’s booting up. Please enter your service tag # on the link below, select the OS, then download the BIOS from BIOS section onto the system and install it. Then run the diagnostics again.

Hey everyone!

I was told hard drives can break down & have to be replaced.
hard drives with moving parts that is.
My question is if my hard drive where to fail, I would have to buy a new one and install windows vista first to go to my windows 7 or can i just install windows 7 on it?
Not sure if you understand what I mean, if not let me know please.

I just want to keep this in mind because you never know what can happen.

Happy birthday to me (-:

A:failed hard drive

Well it depends if you bought a full install of windows 7 or just the upgrade. If you only bought the upgrade then you have to install vista then go to W7.
