Security updates for kernel mode drivers on Windows 8.1 OS causing our .NET Windows form application to freeze when pop-up or modal dialogs are opened

Q: Security updates for kernel mode drivers on Windows 8.1 OS causing our .NET Windows form application to freeze when pop-up or modal dialogs are opened

Hi there,
The following security updates from Microsoft on Windows 8.1 OS are causing freezing issues with our application (pop-ups/ modal dialogs). The application is a .NET 3.5 Windows forms application.
KB Fix - 3168965

KB Fix - 3153199
KB Fix - 3161664

We found that the issue is caused by the security update for kernel mode drivers that are updating the following file - Win32k.sys - Any update to this file on or after May 10, 2016 through Windows Automatic update is causing the problem.

Our clients do not agree to turn off the automatic windows updates.
Is it possible to setup a GPO to change the Windows Update settings for all PCs in the domain to stop all the new updates to the file Win32k.sys?

Is Microsoft aware of this issue & is there a plan to provide a resolution to this issue in terms of a future KB fix?

Thanks & Regards,
Vennila

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/directdownload.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

An event 41, Kernel Power is abnormal shutdown. It may be accompanied by a BSOD but that is not the fact all the times.

Apparently it is not a BSOD issue. Have you experienced BSODs? Let us know.

A:Folder Causing Windows Crash When Opened

The module thats causing the problem appears to be lmpgspl.ax.
That a codec for a mp3 player or a video player I think.

What that suggests is that the folder contains audio or video files, and immediately on opening the program that is associated with those files (and that uses lmpgspl.ax) is trying to associate itself and it is causing the problem.

Either the program that uses lmpgspl.ax is damaged, or the file(s) it is oppening is/are damaged.

It may require that you uninstall whatever uses lmpgspl.ax (search and see what program folder its in, or look at it -right click- and see what the properties are) or that you delete the file or folder using safe mode.

Hi,
I have windows 7 and a possible virus. Symptoms are: Internet explorer opened up a redirect page randomly once in a while, even though I use google chrome. After a while, things got laggy, and I could no longer click anything without my laptop freezing. I have anti malware installed already, and I am running it in safe mode. But the scan is getting stuck at a file in the system 32 folder called xmllite. I've read that this is a possible virus. How can I proceed?
I am currently going off of a mobile device. Even in safe mode with networking, everything is painfully slow.
Thanks

Hi!!! Another problem! I was innocently chatting using Windows Live Messenger, when I recieved an invitation to accept a file called 'photos.zip', from one of my contacts. I stupidly extracted it and double-clicked on some sort of anonymous file, I think it was called 'webcam_photos_2007_screensaver' or something along those line...

Anyway, at random times, the worm opens up all my online contacts and attempts to send them the 'photos.zip' file, along with a message saying something like 'these are my holiday pictures', and lot of other things.

I have deleted everything to do with photos.zip, and run my AVG virus scanner, where it picks up trojans ( but I believe that is something to do with WinFixer and the WinAntiVirusPro2007 business, which I am currently sorting out). I have run Spybot, McAfee Stinger, but nothing.

HELP?!?!

Hello braindead999,
The link below will explain the TPM driver and what it does.
When you in stalled the Vista x64, did you do a clean install with a format, or load it over the top of the Vista x32 as an upgrade ?.

Hello everyone, I just got my Lenovo Y70 from Amazon, I got a BSOD in the first 15 minutes, so I assumed auto updates were installing something nasty that would go away once they were done. So they're done, but the BSOD keeps on ticking.

The machine is 2 days old. Nothing has been installed yet.

Since it happened yesterday morning, I've:
1. Completed all Windows Updates (although it happened before any of them had the chance to cause it)
2. Reverted the device back to factory reset
3. Allowed for Troubleshooting tool from BIOS to take a whack at it, which it claimed has resolved the issue (at one point I couldn't even boot the machine) but then I got the BSOD during what appears to be random activities while using the laptop

I've attached the tool file as instructed, any help would be greatly appreciated.

PS: Go as technical as you like.

Hey guys, I need your help with something I screwed up in the Registry.

I kept getting the proxy problem where I unchecked it and it would check itself.

So I went into Safe Mode and went into the Internet Setting option and changed the values for the proxy to 0.

For some reason my dumb ass right clicked on internet settings inside the registry and clicked permission. I removed all permissions or something like that which is causing everything that i open to display this message.

Windows Security [These files can't be opened, Your Internet security settings prevented one or more files from being opened.]

It also wont let me open the registry anymore :/ which is why I am worried. Is there any way someone can make me a reg file that can reset my setting with me just running the reg file on my computer.

A:Windows Security, These files can't be opened

You might be able to use 'free' Registrar Lite. Download Resplendent Registrar Registry Manager Lite - MajorGeeks

If you can download it, "save" it to you downloads. Don't click "run".
If you are able to open the file, make sure every 'bundled' application is unchecked, before installing!

Windows Can't Security: These Files me for starting a new thread on this but I've looked back over all the other related threads and can't find Windows Security: These Files Can't Be Opened! an exact match or a solution I first noticed this problem yesterday after starting up my pc I'm using Photoshop and adobe bridge when I click on a thumbnail in bridge to open it in photoshop I get the message 'These Files can't be opened' amp 'Your internet security settings prevented one or more files frome being opened' I don't understand how internet security settings can be interfering with a program like photoshop I tried downloading an update for adobe bridge but when I try to install it I get the same message I've tried altering my internet security settings as advised in the other threads here but it makes no difference I have defender switched off and McAfee AV running I also tried disabling McAfee AV but that didn't help with the problem either I've run a full system AV scan with zero issues detected I've also tried system restores at different points and still no luck When I try the restore it scans for a report on all the programs etc that will be deleted and yet when I carry out the restore they are all still present and working confusing eh I'm really hoping someone can help me with this as I'm a working photographer and photoshop is an essential tool for me Many Thanks Paul

A:Windows Security: These Files Can't Be Opened!

"I've tried altering my internet security settings as advised in the other threads here but it makes no difference."

^ By that you mean that you went into the IE control panel (named Internet Options) and set all the zones (four of them) to default? There are a couple of settings in there that don't change back to defaults-- even if you click reset zones. In this case I would check the Internet zone

Firefox, messenger and many other programs refer to the IE zone settings.

I first noticed this problem yesterday after starting up my pc. I'm using Photoshop and adobe bridge, when I click on a thumbnail in bridge (to open it in photoshop) I get the message 'These Files can't be opened' & 'Your internet security settings prevented one or more files frome being opened'. I don't understand how internet security settings can be interfering with a program like photoshop. I tried downloading an update for adobe bridge but when I try to install it I get the same message.

I've tried altering my internet security settings as advised in the other threads here but it makes no difference. I have defender switched off and McAfee AV running, I also tried disabling McAfee AV but that didn't help with the problem either. I've run a full system AV scan with zero issues detected.

I've also tried 3 system restores at different points and still no luck. When I try the restore it scans for a report on all the programs etc that will be deleted and yet when I carry out the restore they are all still present and working.......confusing eh?

I'm really hoping someone can help me with this as I'm a working photographer and photoshop is an essential tool for me.

Many Thanks

Paul

Hello everyone, today I purchased Windows 7 with the hopes that installation would be smooth and quick.... but fate hates me. I successfully made it through the Windows 7 installation page, but when the system rebooted and came to the "Starting Windows" screen, it froze! From here, I spent hours searching for information and playing around in BIOS, and finally, after hours of frusturating tinkering with my system, I got it to work!! I later found that it worked because I turned off the "integrated audio" option in my BIOS, but now if I turn it back on, Windows 7 crashes again... what can I do to fix this? Because Windows 7 isn't very fun without sound.

Thanks

A:Integrated Audio Causing Windows 7 to Freeze!

Im getting the exact same problem. I also have a Creative SB Audigy and the same problem happens as with the onboard sound, it will freeze for about 10 to 15 minutes and then 'sort' itself out but then freeze again about 20 senconds later. I've tried unistalling drivers and getting the manufacturers drivers both vista and XP and trying them in compatibility mode but no luck. Everywhere i have looked no ones had a solution so it seems like windows 7 is of no use as it is and will probably have to go back to XP

Hi, I have this problem that whenever I open file explorer the task manager shows 100% disk usage causing my computer to be unusable. It happened just yesterday. My laptop initially came with windows 7 and I upgraded to windows 10 last year.

After encountering 100% disk usage often I decided to do a clean install and everything was fine for few months, 2 days ago I had the blue screen when I restarted my computer, it said "umountable boot volume" and then it restarts itself and perform automatic repair. Since then whenever I open the file explorer my windows freeze, is there anything I can do to fix it?

My laptop is a Toshiba P850 Model number PSPKBA-05F00U

Thank you so much,

I tried resetting the BIOS to factory defaults and this is still happening. I'm currently booting to and running Windows 8.1 to determine if it's just a Windows 10 issue. This may have been caused by recent updates. Has anyone else been running into the same issues?

I took some maintenance measures to see if I have fixed the issue from my end. I updated the hard drive firmware and set up the power connectors to keep only one boot drive plugged in at a time. I previously had both the Windows 8.1 and Windows 10 drives plugged in at the same time, which may have caused the stability issues. But is the freezing a known issue with the latest updates?

Hello,

This is a complete long shoot not sure if anyone will know about this or not.

I have a Datamax Printer E4203. I currently have to use the Datamax PassThrough driver to print from the software I use.

However, you can't install the PassThrough on windows 7 due to the following error:

Windows can't install the Datamax PassThrough kernel-mode print driver. To obtain a driver that is compatible with this version of windows you are running, contact the manufacturer.

I've spoken to datamax and they aren't doing a new version of this driver for windows?

I've tried disabling the following Group Policy Object. Click START/RUN gpedit.msc navigated to Computer Configuration -> Administrative Templates -> Printers and changed Disallow installation of printers using kernel-mode drivers to Disabled still no joy.

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks, David

Hello guys, hope anyone can help :)
Basically my Display suddenly freezes and turns black after what runs normally and drops an error "Display Driver NVIDIA Windows Kernel Mode Driver, Version 372.90 Stopped responding and successfully recovered" then it repeats the same freezing and restarting process and eventually restarts the computer..
All drivers are up to date, new widnows system is installed
Could it be a sign of changing to a ne GPU?

Hi,
I just upgraded from win 7 to win 10.
Admin account works OK. Whenever 2 standard users attempt login they get BDOS 'unexpected kernel mode trap'

OS-Win 10 pro

Bought the PC from new with OS win 7 (I think professional, don't recall sp)
Hardware is about 2-3 yrs old.
Intel i7-4702MQ @220GHz, 8GB RAM.
Uses internal Intel HD Graphics 4600 adapter

HP Probook 450G1.

Many thanks.

A:Windows 10 unexpected kernel mode trap

Hi. . .

The 3 dumps were identical.

Probable cause listed as netio.sys, a Microsoft networking related driver. It is not the cause; merely a default.

See if Driver Verifier flags any 3rd party drivers - Driver Verifier - Windows 8.1, 8.0, 7 & Vista (BSOD-related)

Be sure that your networking drivers are updated (Ethernet & wifi -- even if not used).

Any such problems with the system under Windows 7?

Thanks for letting me process my 1st Windows 10 dump file! :)

Regards. . .

A:[Freeze]Application broke windows

Removing the RAM and putting one chip in solved the issue.

Putting in the RAM chips one by one should work, even if putting them all in will result in the system failing to boot.

Interestingly, although it initially appears the RAM chips are broken, once they start working, memtest fails to detect anything wrong with them over a 4-hour period of testing - at least that's how it was the last three times.

This issue happened to me another time this year - a software fault generated some sort of weird error, that can only be solved by moving around RAM chips. And memtest shows the chips to be OK.

Vodoo magic, friends.

Hello and thanks for viewing this thread A few days ago Windows XP Home started giving me trouble when I booted my computer Sometimes it Kernel blue Drivers?) screen Exception (Nvidia Mode would just hang forever on the Kernel Mode Exception blue screen (Nvidia Drivers?) launch screen and sometimes it would briefly flash a quot Kernel Mode Exception Not Handled quot blue screen before instantly restarting the computer I was able to successfully boot into Windows a few times but about minutes later the screen would become scrambled suddenly and the computer would inevitably lock up I researched this issue some and found it to be related to driver errors I piddled around in safe mode for a while and tried to figure things out but I decided it would be easier to just do a fresh install of Windows since I had reformatted a little over a month earlier and had very little to back up After doing a fresh install I was reinstalling my drivers and the same Nvidia display drivers that I ve used since I built this computer years ago started causing the same problem I was having before I booted into safe mode and uninstalled them and the problem was fixed Then I tried installing a newer version of the drivers and the same problem happened Since I bought this computer this error has never occurred so I would be grateful if anyone here could shed some light on what might be going on Thanks in advance nbsp

do a fresh install of Windows since I had reformatted a little over a month earlier and had very little to back up. After doing a fresh install,Click to expand...

In view of the above have you now on this new install installed the motherboard drivers - chipset etc and all updates, especially SP3.
re graphics as far as I can see 258.96 is the recommended driver for that card on your system
http://www.nvidia.com/object/winxp-258.96-whql-driver.html
Do you now have a Minidump from the crash AFTER this new install, if so have you examined the dump file and also do you have any warnings in device manager, including on hidden devices.

If necessary - disable restart on failure and post the full Error and parameters.

May find that Who crashed will supply the analysis of the minidump if you have one.
http://www.resplendence.com/whocrashed

simply install and click analyse.

Please post the results, of the who crashed analysis as they appear, not in a file that I have to open,.
Finally if you already have the mentioned driver or you install it here are the full rlease notes with all known hiccups.
http://us.download.nvidia.com/Windows/258.96/258.96_WinXP_Desktop_Release_Notes.pdf
Also I notice that the motherboard includes full testing facilities and stress tests, in the event of no progress with above I would be inclined to run those

New install of Windows 8 Professional on my homemade computer. Has seven on it as well, on a different HDD, but it's been having BSOD issues too. I believe they're seperate issues. I hope I got the files uploaded right. As far as i can tell, like many others, my issues reside in the Wireless subsystem somewhere, but that's where my search dead-ended. If you need any system info, I can fill you in, but the program you had me download looked like it grabbed all that.

Thanks in advance,

Mason

A:Windows 8 BSOD Kernel Security

Your BIOS dates from 2011. Please check at the manufacturer's website to see if there are any BIOS updates available for your system. Also check the readme file to see if they apply to the problems that you are having. Please be advised that flashing the BIOS is a very unforgiving process - and one mistake can physically damage your motherboard.

Only 55 Windows Updates installed. Most systems have 66 or more. Please visit Windows Update and get ALL available updates (it may take several trips to get them all).

E: drive has less than 10% free space. Windows likes 15% free space in order to perform stuff "behind the scenes" without adversely affecting the system's performance. Please free up 15% on ALL hard drives (you can get away with 10% on larger drives and won't notice a large performance penalty)

Realtek RTL8192CU Wireless LAN 802.11n USB 2.0 Network Adapter is installed (but I don't see the device in the systeminfo report):

I do not recommend using wireless USB network devices. Especially in Win7/Win8 systems.
These wireless USB devices have many issues with Win7(and I suspect with Win8) - using Vista drivers with them is almost sure to cause a BSOD.
Should you want to keep using these devices, be sure to have Win7/Win8 drivers - DO NOT use Vista drivers!!!
An installable wireless PCI/PCIe card that's plugged into your motherboard is much more robust, reliable, and powerful.

AMD OverDrive (AODDriver2.sys) is either a stand-alone application, or a component of the AMD VISION Engine Control Center. This driver is known to cause BSOD's on some Windows systems.

Please un-install all AMD/ATI video stuff from Control Panel...Programs...Un-install a program
Then, download (but DO NOT install) a fresh copy of the ATI drivers from Global Provider of Innovative Graphics, Processors and Media Solutions | AMD (in the upper right corner of the page)
Use this procedure to install the DRIVER ONLY: ATI video cards - DRIVER ONLY installation procedure - Sysnative Forums

If the device (AODDriver or AODDriver4.01) remains a problem, open Device Manager, select the "View" item.
Then select "Show hidden devices" and scroll down to the Non-Plug and Play Drivers section.
Locate the AODDriver entry, right click on it and select "Un-install". Reboot for changes to take affect.

Sometimes the driver remains and continues to cause BSOD's. If this is the case for you, post back and we'll give further instructions for safely removing it.

If overclocking, please stop. Remove the overclock and return the system to stock/standard values while we're troubleshooting. Once the system is stable again, feel free to resume the overclocking.

Please update these older drivers. Links are included to assist in looking up the source of the drivers. If unable to find an update, please remove (un-install) the program responsible for that driver. DO NOT manually delete/rename the driver as it may make the system unbootable! :

I have read complaints from incensed Windows users about user profiles becoming corrupted and unusable and it seems that Windows' updates are one of the culprits Is that true 7 Causing Problems Updates Windows I am now very chary of allowing any Windows 7 Updates Causing Problems updates from Microsoft and have stopped all updates I think that for security issues my antirus program could take care of them In fact I have changed from Windows XP to Windows just about a year ago and I have had my user profile corrupted three times within this period I was using Windows XP for many years and I have never encountered any corrupted profile problems - not a single time This makes me regret ever changing to Windows Each time my profile is corrupted I have to rebuild my new user account from scratch The Fixit that is supposed to remedy the corrupted profile problem just didn't work because I have tried it from another user account that I have opened prior to the corruption of the account The whole action of the Fixit started and ended within the new user account and there is no way it can fix the corrupted account in this way Please let me know how I can just save ONLY MY USER PROFILE so that I can reinstate it and only IT in case of future corruption of the account This will save me a load of work rebuilding everything from scratch

A:Windows 7 Updates Causing Problems

Windows updates are VERY rarely the cause of problems - despite what many people like to say.
The problems with updates usually fall into three or four categories...
1) Pre-existing system corruption - such as failing hardware - causing problems which are exacerbated when an update fails.
2) Malware attempting to either prevent updates, or corrupt files.
3) User error -such as switching the power off when the system appears to have frozen during a long update, or at shutdown.

Your user profile is contained partly in the registry and partly in the filesystem - your best option always is a full backup, but System Restore will also save the details required.

Since this problem appears to have happened a number of times, it's important to try and find the cause, rather than patch the effects.
Windows 7 is a very different beast to XP - and cannot be treated in the same cavalier way that people got used to treating XP. This is by design, as one of the problems with XP was that it was originally designed in an inherently insecure fashion (as was evident when SP2 was released with a huge number of fundamental security changes).
I rather suspect that your problem is going to be caused by using methodologies in Win7 that you used to use in XP - and which are no longer either effective or appropriate.

Hey guys ,
as the title already mentions I'm experiencing some hard issues with new windows updates.
So, yesterday I wanted to refresh my updates via Windows Updates. Everything worked fine before but afterwards everything just went wrong.
After I installed the new updates i couldn't login in many clients for example Battle.net , League of Legends and I couldn't even connect to a TeamSpeak server.
I reinstalled Windows and it worked fine again. Then I upgraded again and the issue was back again. I'm not really sure what's causing this. I hope anybody of you can help me
yours faithfully
Andrew

Hi.
I've got some minor problems but still I find them quite annoying.
First:
When I'm running Win 7 my display is flickering. It just looks like bad reception on a TV station. When it gets too bad the display turns blak and after a second everything is fine and it starts all over again.

Second:
After a while Windows states that there is a problem with the Nvidia windows kernel mode driver, version 186.81 and that it has been restored. (This info is given after the screen turns black).

I think that there is a connection between those two problems but I don't know how to solve it.

I've got a nVidia Geforce 9650m GT grafics card and after I installed win 7 downloaded and installed the driver.

It is even worse when aero is running.
In Vista everything was fine.

Im facing "Unexpected kernel mode trap BSOD" during windows update. I came to know that reason for this issue is, bsnl evdo usb modem driver "UE 100 1xEVDO USB modem" (Prithvi bsnl cdma evdo usb modem). But I cannot find latest driver for this driver. A:Unexpected kernel mode trap BSOD-during windows update

I was having the same issue.

wdf01000.sys, unexpected kernel mode trap

There is nothing you can do about it except uninstalling the "BSNL connection manager". BSNL/prithvi will likely never release an update for the driver. I found that if you try to restart/start your PC with the modem connected, then you will face the issue, either while turning the computer on, or while working in it.

I suggest that you start the computer first, after having access to the metro menu/desktop, plug in the modem.

Actually, this modem is faulty. Frequently disconnects when data speed increases, overheats quickly, etc.

Anyway, try the above method. If it doesn't work then let me know. I think I may be able to provide you an alternative software.

Hi crid86,

Welcome to the 8forums.

Please uninstall everything of AMD using Display Driver Uninstaller and install new drivers from AMD

Please remove the Gigabyte software, it is known for causing crashes.
Please remove Daemon tools, it is also known for causing crashes

Daemon tools, Alcohol 120% and Power Archiver Pro uses SCSI Pass Through Direct (SPTD), which is a well known cause for BSOD's.
Please remove Daemon Tools and run the SPTD pass through remover.

Uninstall Daemon ToolsDownload the SPTD standalone installer and follow these steps:
Double click the executable to open itClick on the button shown below

If the button is grayed out, like in the image, there is no more SPTD installation on your system, and you can close the window

The AMD Video drivers have been flagged a few times.
Below I have marked a parameter with the value 3, this simply means that something has been corrupted.
Sometimes it is extremely difficult to find the cause / solve the problem with this crash and parameter.
I sincerely hope that this is not the case.

A:Windows 8.1 Kernel Security Check Failure

What is your Q: drive? - there is no information available about it in MSINFO32.nfo

Daemon Tools (and Alcohol % software) are known to cause BSOD's on some Windows systems (mostly due to the sptd.sys driver, although I have seen dtsoftbus01.sys blamed on several occasions).

Please un-install the program, then use the following free tool to ensure that the troublesome sptd.sys driver is removed from your system (pick the 32 or 64 bit system depending on your system's configuration): New link (15 Aug 2012): DuplexSecure - Downloads (pick the appropriate version for your system and select "Un-install" when you run it).
Alternate link: Disk-Tools.com
Manual procedure here: Registry and SPTD problems | DAEMON Pro Help

MSI Afterburner and Riva Tuner (along with EVGA Precision) are known to cause BSOD's in some Windows systems (it's driver is usually RTCore64.sys). Please un-install them immediately!

If you're overclocking, please stop the overclock while we're troubleshooting. Feel free to resume the overclock once the system has been stabilized.

Processor may be overclocked!

You have both McAfee and 360 Internet Security (I think this is the program listed: Start Menu\Programs\360安全中心 )
Please uninstall both. Only have one antivirus and one firewall running at a time (they fight each other and cause problems such as BSOD's).
If so desired, then install a freshly downloaded copy of the latest Win8.1 compatible version of the one antivirus/firewall that you choose.

The memory dumps blame Netwbw02.sys - a driver for your Intel? Wireless WiFi Link Adapter
While this is the named cause, other things can cause this (such as the antivirus/firewall conflicts, the Daemon Tools problem, the MSI Afterburner/Riva Tuner programs, or even other things)
Please:
- download the latest, Win8.1 compatible version from the Lenovo website. If not available from Lenovo, then download it from http://downloadcenter.intel.com (search for the Intel(R) Dual Band Wireless-AC 3160 )
- uninstall the current Intel WiFi drivers/software
- install the freshly downloaded drivers/software
- monitor for further BSOD's

Finally, these BSOD's are caused due to a buffer overrun - an attack vector that malware likes to use.
Be sure to scan your system with an independent malware scanner (in case your anti-malware programs are corrupted).

Having troubles with windows update basically it updates all hunky dory then Windows fails to start I get startup recovery and the only thing that gets it working again is system restore Less basically From the beginning then Windows updated automatically but on the restart I had the options for startup repair or start windows normally Starting normally just loops it back to this page I used the fix automatically option but that failed so I Updates failure boot causing Windows used system restore to get it back up and running and disabled automatic updates I waited until the March updates were released in the hope that a fix had been issued but it's still occurring Weirdly it seems to update fine it goes through the usual restart configure etc routine and loads to the desktop and even restarts ok if I do that straight away But if I use it for a little while and then restart I'm dragged back to startup repair Updates causing Windows boot failure Figured something on my system was broken so I ran SFC which found unfixable errors Whether that's connected or not I couldn't say But it prompted me to try a repair install with the Windows DVD that came with my system SFC log is attached This failed with the error quot This version of System Recovery Options is not compatible with the version of Windows you are trying to repair Try using a recovery disc that is compatible with this version of Windows My installed version is bit home premium as is the DVD so I'm stumped on that one also Some googling suggests that it's something to do with AHCI drivers not being loaded but the fixes for that were beyond my competence level Registry editing is not my thing edit Also noticed from one of the tutorials that I can't do a repair install with OEM Windows probably explains that problem I've narrowed it down to one of the updates in the picture 'Insupdates png' Sorry I know that's probably not as helpful as knowing the exact one but it takes a little time for the problem to manifest So my questions are can I safely reinstall Windows from the DVD if I need to Would that even fix it Better yet is there a way to fix this without having to reinstall Many thanks in advance

A:Updates causing Windows boot failure

When Windows Updates cause unbootable Win7, System Restore to before they were done and then install them in small groups or singly to isolate the problem update. If it won't install start a Support case on Windows Update website which offers free email support.

You may need to make a new System Repair Disk or obtain media for your licensed version as discussed in Step 1 of Clean Reinstall Windows 7.

You can do a Repair Install on Factory OEM, you just need retail installation media for your version and not the Recovery disks.

But if you haven't done one yet then I'd opt for the vastly superior Clean Reinstall Windows 7. Everything needed is in the blue link to get and keep and perfect install.

I just bought a brand new computer:
Intel Core 2 Duo E8400
2Gb Adata DDR 2 x 2
500Gb Sata2 Western Digital Caviar SE7200RPM 16Mb

Windows XP Pro

Installed Office Office Pro 2003

When in Outlook, it will not remember the Password.

The OS had to be reinstalled and now the store who sold me the computer (a week ago) insists that it will work fine if I do not do any Windows Updates.

Is this correct?

Should I accept a new computer with this limitation?

I would greatly appreciate any comments or advice.

Thank you

Anyone else finding the same thing?
I am getting an increasing number of machines into the wksps which are refusing to boot after an automated XP update. Not necessarily SPIII but some of the small ones are equally responsible.
Usually I can get a temporary fix by using system restore but not always and have to resort to a windows repair and then disable the updates to stop it happening again. Not the ideal solution perhaps but expedient under the circumstances.
Also I visited a Gigabyte site today to be told that I had to uninstall an XP service pack if I wanted to run elements of the site under XP - Vista worked OK.

A:Windows updates causing increasing problems

You can remove the Windows updates individually with the Windows installer cleanup utility instead of a big Repair (which will remove them all!)

Also which Gigabyte site link exactly? (I want to try it from my end)

A:Lack of Windows Updates causing BSOD's

"I try inserting my license key off of my box ..."

What "box" are your talking about? I've never seen the key displayed on a box. That's probably the product ID. The key is always inside the disc case on a slip of paper and on the Certificate of Authenticity (COA) sticker supplied with the disc. The COA sticker is the holographic label that should be affixed to the machine. You may have entered the Product ID instead of the Key.

Im running an AMD Athalon 64 X2 4200 with 4 Gigs of RAM Nvidia Gforce 8800 GTX and two SATA 32 gig hard drives .I recently reset my bios on my ABit An9 32X motherboard and havent updated it (not sure if thats the problem, cant find a frickin floppy drive that works). I then set up a Raid 0 and installed the driver. I then set up Vista and all was well. Next, I downloaded the 111 Windows updates and tried to install them. It broke my PC. I used system restore. I tried to figure out which update is breaking my PC. After repeating this process, I found that the Security Update for Windows Media Format Runtime 11 for Windows Vista for x64-based Systems (KB954155) is definitely breaking my PC. I get this error: Windows could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt:
<Windows root>\system32\hal.dll.
Please re-install a copy of the above file

WHY?

A:Windows Updates Causing Blue Screens

Hal stands for "Hardware Abstraction Layer." It is software that enables Vista to communicate with your hardware. As a system file, it is one of the files that the System File Checker can repair.

Boot up. Go to the Command Prompt. Right-click on it and "Run as administrator." Type in sfc /scannow. You might have to do it a couple of times for it to work.

If the problem persists after, say, three tries, I'd run a checkdisk on the drive.

i cant find windows 10 drivers for my HP Compaq dc7800 Small Form Factor PC

A:windows 10 drivers for HP Compaq dc7800 Small Form Factor PC

Hello, Thank you for posting in the HP Support forum. Welcome ! I am afraid there are no official Windows 10 drivers for your computer as it is too old model created long before Windows 10 was even in the MS plans. Officially, your computer only supports Win 2000, XP, Vista, 7 Please, note that Windows Vista and 7 are still under active support by Microsoft. Windows 7 is stable and reliable OS with support till year 2020 and is the preffered business operating system (based on current statistics at the moment). I'd recommend you continue using it on this PC. As for Windows 10, if you insist on trying it, you may want to test.Do create a back-up of all your files on external media. You can get Win 10 Enterprise edition and test it for free for 90 days >> https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/evalcenter/evaluate-windows-10-enterprise Once you install Win 10, you can try to update drivers for network, sound, video, chips, etc... using the Windows Update method or Device manager. Here is how >> http://support.hp.com/us-en/document/c03330139 Although HP does not officially support or offer drivers for W10 for this device, Microsoft may have drivers and the device might work on Windows 10 (no guarantee). If it works, you can use it. If not, just restore back your previous copy of WIndows or preferred OS. If you need details on how to prepare Win 10 installation media, how to back up your files or something else, please post again and I'd provide details. Let me know if this works for you.

Hello and welcome to the forums Bruntz!

64 C at load is normal for that graphics card.

Is your GTX 260 overclocked? Set it to default clocks and try again.

Try using these latest beta drivers from NVIDIA for your graphics card:-

New Windows kernel mode flaw points to future attack vectors.

A new Windows flaw that allows all current, supported versions of Windows to be crashed was published on Friday by Israeli researcher Gil Dabah. The bug allows a local user to cause a system to suffer a blue-screen of death crash. In principle, this may also allow attackers to run code of their choosing with kernel privileges, though in practice, the looks as if it would be difficult due to the nature of the flaw.

Hi

I'm having issues updating Kernel-mode driver 1.11 KB2685811 - I've used your forums previously to help solve issues via running sfc /scannow, SURT etc but I cannot find any solution to this issue. I would very much appreciate your help in fixing this problem.

Details below:

I have been having a lot of blue screens on my laptop lately with kernel security check failure error. BlueScrenView software says it is caused by ntoskrnl.exe.

I am asking this question since I think I ran out of ideas - I have tried scanning windows files with sfc /scannow, Malwarebytes, also cleaned files and registry with CCleaner and updated drivers with Driver Reviver. What I could not do is scan my pc for viruses with Avira - everytime I have tried that, windows crashed.

What else could I try doing?

This is LIST_ENTRY corruption - almost ALWAYS a driver (and given that the machine is querying interface information when the bugcheck occurs, that's about as smoking gun as you can get):

Hello,

We have a Dell PC running Windows 8.1 Pro and in the last day or so, we have started to get regular (within 30 mins of restart) "Kernel Security Check failure" BSOD crashes. We have not installed or changed anything recently so this is a mystery.

I have followed the guidelines in the Blue Screen of Death (BSOD) Posting Instructions and generated a zip file which I have attached below.

Any help gratefully received!

A:Regular Kernel Security Check BSOD on Windows 8.1 Pro

I found a link that showed how to debug the dmp files and it seems that the issue maybe be due to this bug in Windows 8.1/2012 R2. I applied the Hotfix KB3055343 and since then, no BSOD's .. finger's crossed this is the solution!

You'll need to determine the model number by running MSINFO, since you never provided that detail in your zip file.

A:BSOD Windows 8.1 Kernel Security Check Failure

Hi brownieee,

Welcome to the 8forums.

I have checked the 3 most recent crashes, they look pretty much like each other.
Everytime the NETIO.sys file was marked which is the Network Input/Output System.
This usually points to the network drivers, but looking a little deeper the Nvidia Video driver is flagged.

Please uninstall everything of Nvidia using Display Driver Uninstaller and install new drivers from your manufacturer.
Please be careful with removing the right drivers as you have switchable GPU's.

Hi all,

I am using Windows 8.1 64 bit. I started getting the annoying BSOD of Kernel Security Check Failure since the past couple of days. It happens after my PC is on for a few minutes and will then restart and happen again after a few minutes. I first noticed this when I was browsing the internet. As far as I know, I haven't made any major changes to hardware/software over the past 2-3 days.

I have uploaded the dump files as suggested, by using the DM Log collector Tool created by John (z3r010).

I will be very grateful for any help - as my productivity has plummeted for the past 2 days!

Thank you,
Bob

So, I installed Windows 7 RC today on my Dell Mini 10 and everything was smooth sailing.

At this point my only available resolution was 800x576.

Windows Updates picked up a couple of drivers, one being the Intel GMA 500 drivers. I installed the drivers and the system restarts.

The restart seems slow. I have about 45 seconds of a black screen and my cursor can be moved easily and then all of the sudden the login appears.

I login and the taskbar comes up, but the desktop is black. If I refresh the desktop my wallpaper returns and everything runs fine. The resolution at this point is 1024x576.

If I disable the driver I'm back to square one.

Anyone else experience this problem? Is there a better driver that I should be using? Any help or insight would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

Hi,

I installed lots of Windows Updates a few days ago and ever since then, my Outlook constantly freezes up and my Internet Explorer freezes up (it doesnt even load the homepage). I dont know for sure if its the updates that caused the issues, but the issues definitely appeared shortly after they were installed. Does anyone know of any specific updates that may cause such issues? Any help/assistance is greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
Kevin

This is an inconvenient delay not anything serious Running Windows updates updates Microsoft Security blocking Essentials other windows if it makes a difference Issue Microsoft Security Essentials auto-updates block Microsoft Updates until MSE is finished Description I have Microsoft Update or Windows Update whichever it s known as in set to automatically check for updates but not download or install Microsoft Security Essentials updates blocking other windows updates without my approval I do this so I can review what s being updated I m a little wary Microsoft Security Essentials updates blocking other windows updates of Microsoft putting an anti-piracy app in as a quot critical quot update in the last year Microsoft Security Essentials updates blocking other windows updates or two Anyways when I boot up the computer it checks for updates and alerts me of them However Microsoft Security Essentials also auto-checks for updates upon boot and if it has an update it will automatically being downloading and installing it in the background Which is all well and good except whenever that s happening it causes MU to quot fail quot updates until it s done updating Thus I have to remember to wait until the MSE update is done then run the MU update Question MSE definition updates are included under quot Optional quot updates in MU is there a way to make MSE stop updating independent of MU so I can queue all the updates together I feel like this would be the easiest way to prevent this annoyance I don t see an option and I d rather put up with this annoyance if the only solution is to put all updates back into Microsoft s hands completely nbsp

A:Microsoft Security Essentials updates blocking other windows updates

My understanding of MSE is it will check several times during the to make it has the latest updates. Most GOOD VA programs will do this as there are several releases daily for AV definitions. This is the only way you and your machine will be aware of these releases.

When some of these attacks happen, a definition is released, but as the infection is refined, the the definition must also be refined and/or improved. I use F-Prot on my machines, but I install MSE on the kids and grand kids machines. I have seen as many as 12 releases in one day from F-Prot, this is what is call" being on top of things".

So I would not want to rely on ME being the one to check several times daily on all of my machines to see if a new release has been made.

Dell Latitude D830 laptop, Vista OS

I had to format and reinstall Windows and used Windows Update to install fixes. When it needed to reboot, I would occasionally get caught in an endless reboot loop. The computer would POST and the progress bar on the Windows loading screen would get about halfway across then blue screen and reboot. I am able to use my Windows CD to do a system restore but that would undo some updates. I changed the setting so it wouldn't automatically reboot and got these errors:

STOP: 0x0000007B (0x80403bA0, 0xC0000034, 0x00000000, 0x00000000)

A:Windows Updates causing endless reboot loop

If I am not mistaken 7B points to an inaccessible boot device, may be a defective hard drive. Since you are using DELL, may be it has a recovery partition that you can use to fix/undo any changes. Can you into Safe Mode? Did you try Last Known Good Configuration?

Hi,

I recently got a Dell Inspiron 530 with Vista 32 home premium installed.
Every time ANY Windows update is installed my Windows Mail contacts list becomes unusable, issuing the message 'unable to choose recipients'.
The only way around it that I know of is to backout to before the updates.
Other sites have recommended backing out specific updates but it's ALL updates - I've tried installing/removing them one by one and the issue occurs on each one.
I do NOT want to go to Windows Live and I don't want to pay for a new version of Outlook. Is there ANY way around this problem? Microsoft don't seem to be bothered in fixing it.

A:Vista updates causing problems with Windows Mail

Obviously not. I'll install Thunderbird.

I have Windows 7 Home Premium, and so have also had to put up with all the latest updates. The problem is that after installing them, something happens to my screen resolution (all icons and text are enormous). I have already done two system restores to fix this, but after each one the updates are once again installed and so the situation reoccurs.
I should also add (since the two things are surely connected) that for a while now I've been getting messages regarding my video card drivers. I have checked with AMD, and my drivers are up to date. Yet yesterday and the day before I also got a Blue Screen of Death.
I've installed WhoCrashed, but this won't work since dumps are not enabled(or something similar!!).
I see that my laptop is ready to install the updates again...

I have had to reinstall Windows 7 three times because of this problem. It has to be the Windows updates because after a clean reinstalling of Windows 7, the computer works fine. I am able to download Norton 360, do a system restore disk, download Steam and some games. The next day I turn on the computer, it automatically tries to download and configure updates. It never finishes and it restarts. Eventually it tells me it failed to configure updates and I can get on it again. But Update indicates there are more than 20 or so "important" updates that need to be installed. I disabled automatic updates since the updates are what caused the problem. But I realize it can't stay this way. Eventually I will have to get some of those updates to operate the computer.

I want to consider a new operating system if there is no solution to this.

A:Windows 7 Updates Causing Shutdown/Restart Loop

Welcome,
Please do your reimage again BUT do all of the updates before you add any applications. 360 could be your one exception.
I think that once you have the operating system current, reboot and check for updates at least once after it says there are no more updates. You will be able to add your applications. If you haven't installed and activated 360, do so BEFORE installing any applications, games, etc.

Hello hello.

I getting on the brinck of crying here. ."

I have a brand new build computer and had the Windows RC installed when i started to get BSOD / nvlddmkm.sys

I have sense installed a genuine Win7 after a lovely reminder from Microsoft.
With the new install i don't get a BSOD, but i do get the "Display Driver Nvidia Windows Kernel Mode Driver Version xxx.xxx (what ever version of Nvidia driver u have installed) stopped responding and has successfully recovered."

It only happens in games, and i have tried a lot of stuff to get it to work so i can have fun with the new gear. But just can't get a solution. Anyone here who has a experience with this problem and know possible solutions?

I have monitored the TEMP of the GPU but it does not matter if the temp is 55 or 70 c when it crashes.

Hi,
I got an error today when booting up my computer. Restarting and logging in allowed me to get in and log in, however it took abnormally long and there was a blank screen on my computer for roughly 30sec-1min (normally takes about 3 seconds).

I have attached the debug files and if anyone could please look over this for me it would be extremely appreciated.

Thanks in advance,
Kingfield

Hi,

I have been using windows 8.1 for a while without any problems, but from a few days occasional kernel security check failure started becoming more and more frequent which is pretty annoying. After it crashes it restarts itself and when i login, it immediately crashes and restarts once again. If i login once more after that it takes some time to crash again.

I attached the zip from diagnostic tool, I would really appreciate some help regarding this .
