Preferred Solution: How long does a computer replacement typically tak...

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/directdownload.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I am doing this through Windows Update on a new HP dv7-4270 laptop...all current updates installed except IE9.
Started over an hour ago, and nothing's going on in the Win Update box. No green bar, no animation of any sort. Just says "Installing Update 1 of 1."
Should I just stop the install and try again?
Thanks in advance.

Just noticed...the Stop Installation bar is greyed out. So...what do I do about that?

A:How Long Does the IE9 Update Typically Take?

Not normal time limit. The installation of IE9 usually gives an extra dialog box that pops up in the taskbar that asks for extra confirmation, but doesn't necessarily popup on top of other windows, in the foreground. This can be distracting to the point of one not noticing it at first sometimes. Did you click on the notification and allow the installation prompt? Is so, might try all over again.

This machine has a long history of crashing intermittently. I've historically told it's been related to graphics drivers, but I've uninstalled and reinstalled and wiped and started fresh with those dozens of times. I've also done the same thing with the network drivers, since the Killer/Qualcomm/Aetheros seem to be notorious for that.

I've run memtest and found nothing. I have not been able to reproduce the crash in any way, and it certainly doesn't seem related to stressing the system. If anything, the system's more likely to crash when it's cold and not doing anything.

I've attached what's been spit out of the DM log collector, a zip file of all the minidumps I see, along with a screenshot of what bluescreenoverview pulled from the dump files.

Any suggestions or advice gratefully appreciated.

Something I forgot to mention - other people have fingered the wireless driver but that's also something I've installed/reinstalled repeatedly.

I have been getting multiple BSOD. Computer seems to work fine. I usually leave it on and it goes to sleep. Randomly when I come back sometimes it has gone to BSOD. It is now happening every day to every other day. I've tried updating most of the drivers. The only time I have triggered a BSOD is when I try to update the audio driver (Realtek HD Audio). I've tried everything I can think of - scanning for malware / virus. Updating all the drivers. I ran a memory test as well which was OK and can't seem to figure out the cause. Any help would be greatly appreciated. The error that it gives is IRQL_Not_Less_Or_Equal. I've attached the dump file and other info as requested. Thank you.

I've gotten several BSOD crashes when my computer is not in use. Yesterday, it happened for the first time when I was using it, so I was able to see the error message on the BSOD: CRITICAL_PROCESS_DIED. I uploaded the zip file below. Thanks.

A:BSOD Crashing, typically when computer is not in use

Although it appears that you have updated Windows, your secdrv.sys driver dates from 2006 (it dates from 2012 on my Win8 system). Please visit Windows Update and get ALL available updates.

smihlp.sys dates from Mon May 30 12:21:37 2011 - it's likely a part of the UPEK Protector Suite
Please update it to the latest, Win8 compatible version.

Out of 4 memory dumps there were 3 different BSOD error codes. The differing error codes are usually symptomatic of a lower level problem within the system. They are usually caused by one of these things:
- borked (broken) hardware (several different procedures used to isolate the problem device)
- BIOS issues (check for updates at the motherboard manufacturer's website)
- overclocking - You'll know if you're overclocking or not. If uncertain we can suggest things to check.
- compatibility issues (3rd party hardware/drivers)
- low-level driver problems
- or even malware (scanned for when we ask for hardware diagnostics from Initial Hardware Diagnostics or Hardware Diagnostics ).

You can get a head start on the hardware diagnostics if you'd like - they are located here: Hardware Diagnostics

Define the entire scope for us. What application? How do you have this long string? Where is it located? I'm assuming you're using Word and VBA?? How/where would you like the output? Would a custom function suit you (UDF)?

This is legal copy of Vista, but I don't have CD and have missing files ..edit.. lady I got it from doesn't have anything to help me ..edit.. will have to buy a new Vista and the question is - there are many ways to buy programs on EBAY and so many claims and all over the page with different prices. All I need is way to clean up this program and just get 5 or 6 .dll files that are missing..edit..Maybe I don't need them. I would like to know if I can clean this up and use it or go ahead with over a "hunnert dollers" new Vista. By the way when does Vista support run out? By the way #2 - What's supposed to be wrong with Vista? I have always liked it. I think I'm too slow to see the problems.

Thanks

A:Replacement Vista from EBAY edited - too long

Your computer might be a good candidate for Win 7. Provide us with some basic info as to make, model, installed RAM etc.

You could also run the MS Win 7 Upgrade Advisor...http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=20

If it is, I'd get it over Vista in a heartbeat. Copies of Windows 7 can be purchased for just under a $100.

Support for Vista is set to run out in April 2017. Support for Win 7 runs out in Jan. 2020.

Win 7 here: http://www.newegg.com/Product/ProductList.aspx?Submit=ENE&N=100006816&IsNodeId=1&Description=windows%207&name=Operating%20Systems&Order=BESTMATCH&isdeptsrh=1

As to why VISTA is good or bad.......That's more a matter of personal experience.

A friend of mine and I are going to attempt to play some multiplayer command and conquer via wireless ad-hoc. I had to screw around with my laptop to get the wireless adapter working (discovered that I had to unplug my ethernet cable to allow the wireless to work on the laptop) and finally got the connection to establish in Windows.

We didn't have time to give the game a try as it was getting late but I noticed after punching 'ipconfig' into the command terminal that while I was being auto-assigned an IP address (the first octet being 169...weird?) I wasn't assigned a default gateway. I've not done ad-hoc in years and can't remember if this is normal or not. Do I need a gateway IP for this to work?

A:What typically happens when 2 PC's connect via wireless Ad-Hoc?

Ad-Hoc requires you to manually configure the network, since there is no DHCP server. If one of them is running ICS, you will have a DHCP server.

My IT group has migrated my profile to 3 different computers, including one computer that was built from scratch rather than using our existing image. This suggests to me that it is not a hardware issue (i.e. RAM).

The problem often occurs when I am using the SonicWall Global VPN client and/or Chrome. Sometimes both, sometimes only one. That said, I can't reliably reproduce the problem.

My internet connection is Comcast Xfinity.

I have done my best to provide the requested info. The attached zip will show 4 BSOD events from last night. The reason there are not more is that I received a new computer yesterday in an effort to fix this problem.

Please let me know if there is anything else i can answer.

Hi everyone I've been fighting with this issue for what seems like forever at this point I've been able to get by ignoring it or trying occasional tweaks but after having it crash multiple times during my conquest of northern Constant any ntoskrnl.sys typically activity, with BSOD during Europe in CK as the Empire of Scandinavia well My patience is shot These BSOD's Constant BSOD during any activity, typically with ntoskrnl.sys tend to arise from ntoskrnl exe with the usual BCC being b or e They can happen while I'm Constant BSOD during any activity, typically with ntoskrnl.sys just using the Internet they can happen when I'm playing CK Constant BSOD during any activity, typically with ntoskrnl.sys Really any time my computer decides it's time to shit the bed I've not been able to identify the underlying cause as it happens so randomly Here are the steps I've taken to try and resolve this Downgrade driver from latest to read somewhere that it's more stable for my graphics card Update NIC and wireless adapter drivers had earlier issues with the network sys Run disc checks and Memtest disc check found a few errors Memtest was clean Run Malwarebytes and Spybot in regular and safe mode completely clean Upgraded my CPU cooler to the Coolermaster EVO this was mostly done because the stock was just crappy Reset BIOS values I'm just completely stumped Please let me know if I can provide any further information I would really love to get a definite answer or to have someone more experienced look over the logs to see if they can spot any issues Whoever resolves this for me the next child born to my dynasty will be named after you in-game and I will post a screenshot to prove it

Typically when I step away from my laptop, or leave it over night - I will awake to it having a BSOD and reboots to the Dell Alienware Recovery Program. I've updated all the drivers I can, and it still is giving me this issue. Luckily it rarely happens while I'm actively using the laptop.

Not sure what it is although I am willing to guess it's got something to do with some drivers or perhaps motion-joy controller emulation software The first and rd crash are very similar The only thing I can think of that I did similar that made it crash was when I went to plug in a Wireless Adapter s The first time i swapped them out taking my awus h out and putting my Linksys AE in it cause it to crash Also putting my Awus h in caused it to crash not to long ago I used a driver updating software that came along with Advance System Care and in the middle of it i cancelled because I was tired of waiting so I think Random BSOD- when plug USB) using (Typically something Kind of in i it has something to do with that since as soon as I pushed cancel it miraculously said DONE I think i attached the zip file correctly please tell me if I have not Thanks in advance for any of your help Can anyone help me with this Keep in mind this is a fairly new PC Custom Built of course This problem only started BSOD- Kind of Random (Typically when i plug something in using USB) a few days ago

A:BSOD- Kind of Random (Typically when i plug something in using USB)

Well thanks for nothing folks. I went on a did a little more research myself and found this wonderful tool
Instant Online Crash Analysis (which analyzes and gives you analysis instantly instead of waiting on people. I would recommend it to anyone here having issues with BSOD and knows how to get into there .dmp files
(If anyone was interested, it was caused by Xbox 360 controller emulation software). Instead of DS3 and motionjoy drivers, I am now using SPC emulation tools instead.
Toodles!

For some silly reason I removed the 2 128mg PC2100DR ram sticks from my old computer that was working just fine. When I reinstalled them and I try to boot up I get a long beep, a pause, and another long beep. This senario continues and I shut the computer down as soon as possible. I'm sure I have the ram seated properly. Any ideas? Thank you in advance

If you are sure that you have them seated correctly try one stick at a time.

Actually - as I cannot uninstall Lotus Notes (because of a registry entry the uninstall app cannot find) I am forced to manually delete the files. Which registry entries would also be safe to remove?

Hi,

IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL (a)

This indicates that Microsoft Windows or a kernel-mode driver accessed paged memory at DISPATCH_LEVEL or above.

This bug check is issued if paged memory (or invalid memory) is accessed when the IRQL is too high. The error that generates this bug check usually occurs after the installation of a faulty device driver, system service, or BIOS.

1. Remove and replace ESET with MSE for troubleshooting purposes as it may very well be likely causing conflicts:

ESET removal - How do I uninstall or reinstall ESET Smart Security/ESET NOD32 Antivirus? - ESET Knowledgebase

MSE - Microsoft Security Essentials - Microsoft Windows

2. Uninstall Open Hardware Monitor, really old and buggy drivers (2008).

3. Navigate to services.msc and disable the nVidia Streaming Service, and then restart the computer.

4. RTCore64.sys is listed and loaded which is RivaTuner/EVGA Precision/MSI Afterburner. This software is pretty infamous for being absolutely terrible, and causes a whole slew of conflicts with the original OEM GPU control panel. I'd uninstall ASAP.

If you're using it to control fan speeds, use SpeedFan instead.

Hello and welcome onetimer to check the PSU see this

Using HW Info

You can test the volts on the PSU with HWInfo HWiNFO, HWiNFO32/64 -Download < download the right bit version andclose the right hand window select Sensors and scroll down to the power sectionwhere you will see what the volts are doing see my pic.

The original right hand window shows themachine running and is handy for that but for looking at the components in some detail close it and use themain left hand side panel

FOR OTHER COMPONENTS

Open each + down into the componentitself and then click on it - in theright hand side will appear all sorts of details including brands speeds andother essential info that device. See pic for example.
Seems like you have decent size PSU in there but just worth a check run this too

A:Computer is slow..hangs for a long time when opening my computer icon

Hello, punkopunx
Welcome to TSF

My name is Billy O'Neal and I will be helping you. (Billy or Bill is fine, if you like.)
Please give me some time to look over your computer's log(s).
Please take note of the following:In the meantime, please refrain from making any changes to your computer.
Also, even if things appear to be running better, there is no guarantee that everything is finished. Please continue to check this forum post in order to ensure we get your system completely clean. We do not want to clean you part-way up, only to have the system re-infect itself. :)
If you do not understand any step(s) provided, please do not hesitate to ask before continuing. I would much rather clarify instructions or explain them differently than have something important broken.
Finally, please reply using the button in the lower left hand corner of your screen.
Old topics are closed after 3 days with no reply, and working topics are closed after 5 days. If for any reason you cannot complete instructions within that time, that's fine, just put a post here so that I know you're still here. We get a lot of people who simply leave, and if there is no contact for that amount of time I will have to assume you have "vanished" .
We need to run a Scan with DDSPlease download DDS, and save it to your desktop, from one of the following mirrors:This is a mirror
This is another mirror

Disable any type of "Script Blockers" or "Script Protection" installed on your system.
Double click on your desktop.
If prompted by any script blocking tools, please allow any actions taken by DDS.
When prompted to preform an Optional Scan, please select
Two reports will open. Please reply with the generated reports:DDS.txt <-- Copy and paste into your next post
Attach.txt <-- Attach to your next post
We need to scan for rootkits with GMERPlease download gmer.zip and save to your desktop.alternate download site 1
alternate download site 2

Unzip/extract the file to its own folder. (Click here for information on how to do this if not sure. Win 2000 users click here.)
When you have done this, disconnect from the Internet and close all running programs.
Note: There is a small chance this application may crash your computer so save any work you have open.
Double-click on Gmer.exe to start the program.
Allow the gmer.sys driver to load if asked.
If it gives you a warning at program start about rootkit activity and asks if you want to run a scan...click NO.
Click on "Settings", then check the first five settings:System Protection and Tracing
Processes
Save created processes to the log
Drivers
Save loaded drivers to the log

You will be prompted to restart your computer. Please do so.
Run Gmer again and click on the Rootkit tab.
Look at the right hand side (under Files) and uncheck all drives with the exception of your C drive.
Make sure all other boxes on the right of the screen are checked, EXCEPT for "Show All".
Important! Please do not select the "Show all" checkbox during the scan.
Click on the "Scan" and wait for the scan to finish.Note: Before scanning, make sure all other running programs are closed and no other actions like a scheduled antivirus scan will occur while this scan completes. Also do not use your computer during the scan.

When completed, click on the Copy button and right-click on your Desktop, choose "New" > Text document. Once the file is created, open it and right-click again and choose Paste or Ctrl+V. Save the file as gmer.txt and copy the information in your next reply.
Note: If you have any problems, try running GMER in Safe Mode

In your next reply, please include the following:DDS.txt
Attach.txt

OK I got a new Lenovo Yoga 900 80MK0010US model. They replaced it and the replacement has issues so they are willing to replace with model 80UE003AUS.

Since I'm not a tech person and this was just a gift from someone who bought me the laptop.
I am told replacement is better than what I have.

Here is differences that I see on spec sheets:
Processor from I7-6500U (2C, 2.5/3.1GHz, 4MB, 1600 MHz) To I7-6560U (2C, 2.2/3.2GHz, 4MB, 1866MHZ)

Storage from 512GB SATA SSD To 512GB PCIe SSD.

Nothing else different.

While my sons do gaming, we just use windows based products and quickbooks. Im sure its fine just want to make sure it is better

Thanks

A:Replacement Computer

It does appear the new notebook is nicer - at least on paper. The normal CPU speed is a bit slower, but when tasked, it will boost to a higher "turbo" speed - though .1GHz is not likely to be noticeable. The RAM is faster though not sure that will be noticeable either. Generally more RAM gives a bigger bang than faster RAM. PCIe SSDs do tend to offer faster performance than SATA SSDs. But SATA SSDs are already extremely fast - especially compared to even the fastest hard drives. So again, not sure you would notice the differences. Altogether, however, on some tasks, there may be a noticeable performance gain. But still, whoever told you the replacement is better was telling the truth.

A:Old computer to New computer Help. kinda long bare with me

Unplug all cables from the motherboard except the power cables, remove all cards and RAM, then try to boot. You should get BEEP/ERROR codes for missing RAM. If not, there is a motherboard/cpu or power supply issue...at which point the only way to isolate further is by swapping parts.

As for the display settings, try updating/reinstalling the video drivers.

Get a refund and a build a better PC - that graphics card is rubbish and laptops have bigger hard drives. What about the PSU? Is it 80+ Certified Bronze? As for the motherboard it might be propietrary - stick with name brands like Gigabyte.

A:Choosing a replacement computer system

Hi,
As you're in the UK, may I suggest Which? as a good source of reliable unbiased reviews to supplement comments from TSG members?
In case you don't know about Which? (quote) " ... we are now the largest consumer body in the UK, with over 617,000 members that subscribe to our magazine, and over 254,000 online subscribers* - and this is constantly growing." http://www.which.co.uk/about-which/who-we-are/overview/

If you want to read individual product reviews there's a one-off charge of 1 per review.
Laptop reviews http://www.which.co.uk/technology/computing/reviews/laptops/

This page though is free & rates desktop brands http://www.which.co.uk/technology/computing/reviews-ns/desktop-pcs/best-buys/

I've no connection to Which? I'm just suggesting a source of info.

Hope this helps?

Not sure what happend... So Idk what to do... Should I buy a new power supply and see if everything is ok? Or just give the computer to some lab and have em to "make it work" ??

A:replacement motherboard/processor - Computer not turning on

First of all, have you read the guide at the top of the forum for problem builds? If you follow ALL steps of the guide, you will find the cause of your problem.

Next I assume you did not just install the mb without checking that each standoff was in the correct position. One incorrect standoff and the board will short when you press the pw ON button.

Oh those Best Buy geeks...
My parent's pc died on them and they took it to get serviced...3 weeks later, it came back with a new power supply, but the computer is awfully, awfully slow (it takes 10 minutes from.startup to load internet explorer). Factory reset has done nothing...did they touch something they shouldn't have?

A:Computer slow after power supply replacement...

You would have to ask them for a list of that which they did.

What brand, model, model # PC, or same information for the motherboard?

Computer specs would be helpful.

Which ;power supply was it: brand, model, model #, wattage? Same for now?

If you aren't happy, take it back & have them install a new power supply and politely insist that they demonstrate it to you before you accept it back.

Start the computer, note time from start to desktop appearance or log in screen appearance.

Start the computer in safe mode & do the same.

To start in safe mode, start > run
type: msconfig
OK
boot.ini tab
put a check in "safe book"
OK
exit without restarting
Shut down.
Turn on.

Post your time logs here.

See #17 at http://forums.techguy.org/windows-xp/882028-my-update-problem-2.html for an example.

Hello guys,

Ive recently took out my PSU fan because it makes a noise like it is catching on a wire, ive took it out and the noise has stopped (guessing that was the problem) im about to order a new fan but also my case fan's have now broke. How long will my computer run for without permanently damaging the computer itself? my CPU/heatsink fan is working but case and the one at the back has broke due to the wire snapping connecting the motherboard to the case fan.

I have 3 fan's. one at the back and two on the side. Where the two on the side are the wire has snapped. Is it easy to fix them as well?

I have a Desktop PC Windows 7 Originally currently running windows 10 pro. The outside of the Computer feels hot to the touch. Not "Oh my god I just burnt my hand hot. more like. Wow Hot."

And its not as loud as it used to be I don't think.

How do I find out if its being cooled down or not. Plus is there a way to cool it off on the outside. Should I buy a little fan to put next to it or near it. I have never felt it this hot before. But I also do live in a mobile home and the temp in here just 10 minutes ago was 90 in the whole house.

Sounds like your internal fans are not running. I would suggest shutting down the computer, then when cool remove the case cover. See if there is a lot of dust collected inside the case. This is what usually stops the fans from running. If there is a lot of dust, blow or vacuum it out. Make sure you unplug the power cord first. Once clean, make sure there is nothing that can fall into the computer while doing this next step. Plug in the power cord and press the start button. Observe to see if the fan(s) run. If not, unplug the power cord again. See if you can gently turn the fan(s) with you finger. If hard to turn, you may be able to fix the problem with specific cleaning around the blade housing. If they turn easily, but don't run when powered up, you will need to get replacements.

but just say a heavy user who uses it every day say around 4-6 hours a day.

A:how long does a computer last?

I'm gonna guess 4-10 yrs, maybe more, maybe less. Depends on how abusive the kids are, lol.
Luckily, computers can be upgraded, well almost all of them can be.
If yours is store bought, IN MY OPINION, I'd get the extended warranty.
I was so glad I did on my very first IBM. The start button pooped out on me and the kit or whatever wasn't cheap. But it was free for me.
The opinions you receive here will be wide and varied. Sometimes it is just luck, too.

I am into gaming, mostly rpg and some shooter games. My gaming computer is just over one year old:

winXP pro x64
AMD phenom X4 955
3.2 ghz
8 GB RAM
ATI radeon 4870 dual 1ghz each
2 hard drives in raid 0, 150 gb each

How long will my computer last before I have to replace it? I only use it for gaming.

OK, I hope I posted in the correct section.

I have Windows XP SP2 and recently I have seen that my computer takes for ever to start or restart. I added 2GB of RAM and it worked great for 3-4 months. But the last 30 days or so it's just SLOW!!! Once it "Warms up" it runs fine but the damn thing is like an OLD OLSMOBILE WARMING UP IN A COLD WINTER MORNING. It shouldn't take this long to start.

I have EVERYTHING shut off to MINIMAL start up items. I have run every scan in the world and there are no Trojans, virus, ad-ware.

Any ideas or suggestions would be great!

Thank you,

OK I'm going to try to describe sorry) is I'm I is computer possessed( long, this my think my problem as detailed as possible I've always thought myself to be relatively smart amp Self sufficient when it comes to computers and to be honest right now I'm SO LOST Ok Saturday morning I clicked onto my firefox icon and started it up A few seconds into browsing I couldn't click on Links the menu bar I think my computer is possessed( this is long, I'm sorry) I could minimize the window but I couldn't click on anything in on my desktop So I hit Ctrl alt delete and ended the firefox process After I did that things seemed to work ok But they'd freeze up periodically and jump out of the freeze once I ctrl alt delete amp closed ANY open window Right now this is my main problem I immediately thought I'd had a bug so I ran Norton several times amp Lavasoft adaware A few cookies showed up but nothing else major Then it started to slow way down I think my computer is possessed( this is long, I'm sorry) and then I was CONVINCED I had some kind of worm or something so I put in my XP disk and pretty much reinstalled windows I backed up my pictures etc first and it took SO LONG because of the freezing etc Anyway once that was done and my computer was fresh amp clean I expected it to run smoothly but it kept stalling and freezing up A tech forum can't remember has made a suggestion to someone else to install spybot amp adaware and run it in safe mode I did this and it found a registry edit HKLM- gt System - gt currentcontrolset - gt I think my computer is possessed( this is long, I'm sorry) Services- gt wscsvc- gt start d word It should be So I changed it to and things would run ok then it'd freeze up I'd check and it was set back to I've run all the virus amp malware programs I know and a scan from kaspersky picked up virus but they ended up being nothing Sooo Up until minutes ago the registry problem didn't go back to I JUST changed it while typing this back to As I'm writing this I've kept a few google pages open and had to Ctrl alt delete and close them just so things would unfreeze What do you guys think Hardware problem Virus I'm sorry if I've not explained this well I can answer any questions Edit to add I also forgot to mention that my computer skips back Like If I'm on THIS page right now editing sometimes it'll skip me all the way back too google where I started This is somewhat why I thought this might be a hardware problem because my mouse is old or touchy it has back and forward buttons on the sides of it But I really don't know

A:I think my computer is possessed( this is long, I'm sorry)

I had a wierd problem like that and like you I re-installed windows. Took me hours to back up everything and re-install all again. To my surprise the problem persisted.

Turned out that one of the keyboard keys was sticking doh!

In short, it sounds like a hardware issue.

I have a p4 2.8 ghtz with 512 RAM. I have 2 hard drives: 80 gigs (master) and 120 gigs (slave) . It was working well until recently: I had to reformat my main drive and reinstall XP from scratch. Windows now works very well...once I get it started ! Everytime I boot or reboot my computer, I have to wait more than 5 minutes before using windows. I get this black screen with white dotted lines slowly filling up at the bottom for about 4 and a half minutes before the windows logo shows up. I verified my connections/jumpers, went through my bios settings, even flashed the bios to an earlier version: no success. Do I have to reinstall windows ? Could that take care of the problem?

For the past few months my computer had a hard time to start sometimes it took 2 hours to start. But yesterday when i tried to start it, nothing...only the green light on the on/off button going really fast. The fan on the processor works but the hard drive does'nt work. I tried unplugging and repluging the IDE cable from the hard drive {While power on} and then the hard drive started but still nothing{and light on the on/off button still flashes real fast}. Any idea what the problem is?

I don't know if this can be helped but i'm having a hard time loading "My Computer". As soon as I click on the "My Computer" icon, a flash light animation appears. So i'm assuming it's looking for "My Computer". Anyhow, It takes aproxmately one minute for "My Computer" to be found. Thus, this makes it hard to see hard drives and removable drives. I know there are shortcuts but I want this My Computer to work. Any suggestions?

A:My Computer - Long Load.

I had the same issue and found it to be mapped network drives that were no longer active. Each time I opened My Computer it would search the network for the shared mapped drives, sometimes taking up to 4 minutes to finally open. Once I right clicked on the old mapped drives and chose disconnect, My Computer icon would open up immediately. If you don't have any mapped drives, it could be looking for something that is a short cut and which is no longer active.

Hope this solves your issue. Let the forum know if it works.

Hello,
Is there a way to make my PC shut down after it has been inactive for a certain amount of time. Like for example, if I didn't use the PC for something like 2 hours, it would automatically shut down, sort of like how a screen saver comes on. Thanks

I've had an issue of my computer freezing after being on for so long (anywhere from 6-20+ hours of my computer being on without me actually using it). I'm trying to figure out what the problem is.. I scanned my computer for malware (I use Malwarebytes' anti-malware) and I also scanned my pc with Microsoft Security Essentials, the both with full scans no issues (also tested in safe mode, had one issue a while back, but removed malware). I use Ccleaner frequently to remove registry errors as well as clean up the pc in general.

What could possibly be the problem?

a side note.. when my computer freezes it may freeze when the screensaver was on OR when the screensaver isn't even on (on desktop screen) - meaning I'm not on the computer during the time.

A:Computer freezes after being on for so long

Do not use registry cleaners frequently - they can damage the system.
Start with trying this:

Then please run the following DISM commands to see if there's any problems with the system (from an elevated (Run as administrator) Command Prompt).  Press Enter after each one:Dism /Online /Cleanup-Image /ScanHealthDism /Online /Cleanup-Image /CheckHealthDism /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
FYI - I have repaired systems using the last command even though problems weren't found with the first 2 - so I suggest running them all.
From this article: http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/hh824869.aspx
You can also run sfc.exe /scannow from an elevated (Run as administrator) Command Prompt to check for further corruption.

Also, please provide this report (make it soon after the next freeze):
Please do the following:
- open Event Viewer (run eventvwr.msc from the "Run" dialog)
- expand the Custom Views category (left click on the > next to the words "Custom Views")
- right click on Administrative Events
- select "Save all Events in Custom View as..."
- save the file as Admin.evtx
- zip up the file (right click on it, select "Send to", select "Compressed (zipped) folder")
- upload it with your next post (if it's too big, then upload it to a free file-hosting service and post a link here).
FYI - If we're looking for Event ID 41 errors (unexplained shutdowns), there's more info on that here:  http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2028504

A:Overall OS help, but I need to get a file off of my computer. Very long. Please help.

Someone more helpful will probably post sooner or later, but:

1a) see ^. Sounds to me like your HDD is failing, but it could be a particularly nasty virus and once you can access OS, it could possibly be cleaned, tho' it may even then make more sense to reinstall. If you have the Recovery Console installed, or can get to the Recovery Console from your OS disk, you can always see if you can repair XP.

1b) maybe, but if your HDD is failing then you'll need a new one first.

2) your best bet imho is to hook the drive up to another computer as an external using an enclosure or a [sata or IDE] to USB cable kit. While it's connected, if it's recognized by the OS you can scan it for viruses & transfer off files.

If it's not recognized, you can run drive diagnostics -- a good place to start with that is SeaTools. Seatools for DOS can be downloaded as an ISO and burned as a bootable disc, if you want to try to diagnose the HDD without removing it.

If you hook it up externally to another computer, and the OS doesn't recognize it, TestDisk still may be able to help you recover the file you're wanting, even if the HDD is partially toast (bad MBR or many bad sectors) -- read through the HDD support forum Have you "lost" a hard drive, partition or files in your computer?

To get better/more targeted assistance, post all the information about your computer that you can -- Laptop/Desktop Brand/Model or if custom-built PSU/MoBo/CPU/HDD/GPU/RAM/Shoe size.

Good Luck!

jw

EDIT: Whoops, just saw that you said it's a Compaq Laptop, so, post the model number (as specifically as possible) and if it's been modified in any way.

Hi cindylo,

Bug check F4 is usually related to storage/hard drives. Do you have an SSD? Did you update to the latest firmware for it?

Upload a screenshot of your hard disk using crystal disk info:CrystalDiskInfo - Software - Crystal Dew World
Screenshots and Files - Upload and Post in Seven Forums
Run Disk Check on your hard disk for file system errors and bad sectors on it:Disk Check
Hard drive test both short and long with: SeaTools for Windows

hey, you still need an SSD.. anything over 20 seconds is ridiculous in 2015..

Hi, Ive built 2-3 computers, and I am just wondering how long does it take you to build a computer, from start to finish (start being unpackaging all of the parts, getting the necessary tools together, and finish being plugged in and starting to install the O.S.) Im not really looking for a professional point of view because they do it all the time, Im talking about a person who has built 2-6 systems, and not old systems, newer ones which take more time, also Im not talking about water cooling systems. thanks alot! -Nick

A:computer no long starts

My first guess would be a video card problem
if you hit escape, do you get any info on the screen?

most newer systems have a video card built into the mother board, if you are currently plugged into an add on card (one that you can remove) you can try removing it and using the onboard one, this may require you to enable it in the BIOS

Okay guys for my epic tale of woe I present the following I ve built eight or so computers for my family over the years I m typing on one right now But for some Computer Story) Woes (Long reason the gaming rig I put together for my sister about two years ago Computer Woes (Long Story) never has seemed to work right She beleives It s demonic posession I m writing to solicit any fresh insight on the situation I ll begin at the beginning hopefully getting the full scope of the situation will help any would-be advisors Started out simple enough just a nice middle-range game rig Original MB was an MSI K N-Neo socket with an AMD athalon Graphics were handled by a Nvidia G-Force gt remember this was about two years ago not a bad card for the time in X agp Storage is A WD gig rpm spindle SATA HD Partially I do admit it s my fault Got a bad motherboard but since there wasn t the scratch for a new one right off the bat I wracked my brains trying to trouble shoot away every other conceivable problem Replaced the video card had the memory tested passed just fine flashed the Bios to latest version disabled the onboard sound and installed soundblaster PCI card Nope System was still volatile and extremely unstable Particularly when handling anything multimedia related I was busy with work and my sister gave up on her computer for almost a year until she wanted to try World of Warcraft and she drug the beast back out into the sunlight After finally bellying up to the bar I replaced the motherboard Swapping the MSI out for a FoxConn NF SK AA- KRS This necessitated an upgrade to a PCI-E Video Card for which I selected a Diamond Radeon X meg card Other components remained the same After crossing fingers and saying a prayer computer POSTed without issue Windows XP professional went on smooth as silk and I sighed a breath of releif UNTIL I tried to load WoW for her Install went just fine opening intro movies played just fine but when it goes to the intial screen to accept the EULA The computer will either lock up hard or reboot Yeah Great A couple of times windows wanted to send in an error report and asking for details revealed the problem as a stop error Driver confict whoopie Well after updating the sound video and N-force drivers I m beginning to wonder if the bad luck has followed me to the new board When I tried to install the old Sound Blaster bit card from the old machine something funny happened When I installed it into the first PCI slot the computer suddenly wouldn t POST When removed it started up again no problem When I tried the second or third PCI slot The computer simply dosen t recognize it s there This board was ordered from NewEgg com so I ve no worries about being able to return it Just before I do I was looking for a second opinion or a concensus from other tech-heads Is this a bad board or am I missing something Any constructive comments or suggestions would be greatly appreciated nbsp

I have windows XP and it takes a while to boot up before going to the windows xp screen. While I'm waiting for it i see white bars that look like this:
||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||| (they connect when it loads)

Before this problem i had my power supply replaced. It worked normally when i got the computer back but i had some blue screens saying 'memory dump'
Then the slow bar problem appeared. There was a problem with the system32/config file being missing or corrupt. It said to use the recovery console to repair but I didn't know how, so I just reformatted.

After reformatting but the problem was still there. I reinstalled xp.

The computer works fine after; it is only the startup that has problems.

Well basically to a give a little description taking up Computer to start to long of the problem I will go step by step on how this whole thing goes down So first my computer will start up normally it will get past the initial windows loading screen and get past the welcome screen in good fashion but when it gets to the next screen where the computer is officially starting up for use it stays in this black screen with only the mouse cursor present for like - minutes I can get to the task manager by pressing ctrl alt delete and when I go to click the processes tab it reveals that not all the windows processes have started Computer taking to long to start up up yet in a timely manner I have already tried disabling Computer taking to long to start up some programs from starting up with windows but that didn t fix the problem The only things I haven t done yet to try and solve this problem was clean the dust out from the inside of my computer and possibly many other things I m not really sure though But I only had this computer for like months could the dust really pose a problem that early in this computers life span Anyways I just want to know whats wrong with my pc and fix this problem before it develops into something disastrous

A:Computer taking to long to start up

But I only had this computer for like 7 months, could the dust really pose a problem that early in this computers life span? The warranty is usually for 12 months (if you purchased new) -If you pull it apart that usually voids the warranty. Let the shop where it came from check and clean it if needed -

Hey guys thanks for taking the time to look at this I really appreciate it This story is long just FYI But thanks again for any help Here is some background into my problem I have been using my Girlfriends laptop It s a newer Dell that runs windows She had this printer that stopped working for an unknown reason So we called the help desk people at HP They messed around with the computer and got the printer to work for a few days then it stopped working again We decided to buy a new printer from HP thinking that would ( Computer long) automatically restarting solve our problems So I uninstalled the old software for the first printer and tried to install the new software for the new printer I thought it would be an easy process but it didnt work so we once again had to call HP and ask them to Computer automatically restarting ( long) set it up for us Anyway we got the printer working and that s where our trouble started So I woke up the next morning and fired up the computer It said that the computer did not shut down properly due to a driver and and went into the start-up repair process After min or so the computer was back to normally and working As the days have gone by we keep having problems with the computer shutting down after long periods of non-use and saying that the computer didnt start up properly And now the start-up repair has failed and says that start-up repair cannot repair the problem automatically I get this response Boot critical faile c windows system kdcom dll is corrupt result failed error code x I am thinking this problem may have been caused when I uninstalled the old software or installed the new software for the printer or its possible that we may have a virus Any advice on what to do Thank you for your time Jordan

A:Computer automatically restarting ( long)

Hello Jordan, kdcom.dll is an essential operating system file that could habe become corrupted for a whole host of reasons. If the System Recovery option has failed (See Microsoft Technet social to ensure you selected the correct recovery options - also look at the advice on how to Fix the MBR (Master boot record) in the thread). If recovery still doesn't work you could always look into copying a non-corrupt kdcom.dll from a working machines to yours. There are various ways to do this, e.g. plug your hard drive into another computer. If all else fails take a copy of all your data from your Laptop (If you haven't already done so) and consider running a repair/re-install, or a clean install, of Windows 7.Hope this helps. I'm sure if there are other things you can try first someone here will advise.good luck,Steve

I went into my startup menu and deselected everything except antivirus anti-spyware Microsoft Operating System x idk why there s two and it still takes between - minutes to shut down The only thing I ve done since it started doing this was install new RAM last month gb because my old set was bad and causing multiple BSODs and CPU beeping Since I changed that I haven t had any of those problems at all but the thing is it didn t start doing down long takes Computer shut to this immediately after I had installed it so Computer takes long to shut down I doubt that would be it I did install some new software the other day but this has been going on for a least a couple of weeks This really isn t a problem as far as me using the computer but it is very concerning to me since it s not normal behavior I ve Computer takes long to shut down run disk and registry cleaners antivirus anti-spy defraged HDs and unistalled rarely used programs that take up a lot of space My C drive is gb and I have gb free and when I shut down I m not running excess or system straining programs just Chrome antivirus and spyware maybe a media player but I make sure to close all that except the anti s before I shut down I m fine with putting the computer to sleep rather than shutting down but I don t want this problem to continue for fear that it could become worse Also does anyone know any reason why Windows Explorer would restart when I right-click on anything in My Computer This has been happening for a couple months already but I always forget to bring it up I have to take the long way around if I wanna adjust properties etc on any drives rather than right-clicking Setting back to a restore point does not work as I ve had to do that a few times when trying to diagnose my previous RAM issue It doesn t happen in my Admin account though but I really only like to use that account when I need to Sorry if it s long but thanks a bunch for sticking around and finishing this epic tale of technological atrocities nbsp

I have two computers my new desktop computer and my older 2 year old computer. I have a printer connected to a 16ft extension cable and then connected to my computer. From my new computer it does work saying that the device is not recognized. When I plug it into my laptop it works perfectly. Is there anything I can do to make it work on my new computer? I installed the printer drivers on both. Thanks in advance for your help.

A:Long usb cables not recognized on my computer?

In practice, the USB specification limits the length of a cable between full speed devices to 5 meters (a little under 16 feet 5 inches). For a low speed device the limit is 3 meters (9 feet 10 inches).

When you say it's an extension cable.., does that mean 16 ft extension PLUS some other cable length? An even if not, while 16' might meet spec i'd still try a shorter cable since it's approaching the limit.

A:computer will not boot up ( really long post =-P )

4) It depends on where the drive came from. Used, it may have a hidden restore partion. Or it may have been partitioned by a previous owner.

1 throught 3) Chances are none of that will work. You had errors on install. That could cause any amount of problems. I don't think there isa workaround here; you need to find out & fix the problem that prevented the normal install of XP.

It would be more helpful if the entire text of the error messages was posted; it will help others to do research i.e. Google looking for possible causes.

Post full system specs.

Also, test your memory using the version of memtest86 you burn to bootable Cd. This will test also test your optical drive, which could be the problem.

A:the computer takes way too long to shut down

Here are some steps you can take to try to speed up Windows Shutdown. Before editing the registry, be sure to either create an image of your system partition or backup the registry. If you don't know how, please ask.

 1) Make sure "clear pagefile at shutdown" is not enabled:
start - run - regedit
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Session Manager\Memory Management]

Set ClearPageFileAtShutdown value to 0

2) Start - Run - Regedit
Navigate to the following Registry key:
HKEY CURRENT USER\Control Panel\Desktop
Double click on the AutoEndTasks entry and replace the 0 with a 1 in the Value data text box

For the next two, if the dword value indicated does not exist, create it:

Double click on the WaitToKillAppTimeout entry in the right pane and change the Value data to 2000

Double click on the HungAppTimeout entry in the right pane and change the Value data to 1000

Reboot

3) HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control
Right-click on WaitToKillServiceTimeout and change it to 2000

I am about to build myself a custom gaming computer, although I have somewhat of a tight budget. I want to be able to make a computer that is able to last for about 4-5years (I know I am pushing it), and I would really like some help trying to pick out the right parts. By making it last, I mean the computer being able to stay up to date with current gaming requirements.

Although first, I want to know if these computer parts would be able to ensure that my computer "lasts" along time. :suspiciou

AMD Athlon 64 3500+ CPU, Socket 939, with Built-In Dual Channel Memory Controller
ASUS A8N-SLI Deluxe Motherboard
2GB OCZ Dual Channel DDR400 of RAM
En6800GT 256MB DDR PCI-E Video Card
74GB SATA150 10000RPM

Im not really worried about the CD drive/sound card, so I was just wondering about these parts.

A:New Computer, BSODs, Long beeps. Need help.

I scanned over your post. What I see here is the need for you to exchange your ram for something more compatible. And your ram seems to be faulty.

A few months back, my computer would shut down when it was on for too long. I figured it was the power supply, so I replaced it. They gave me the wrong power supply, but I installed it anyway. It is the wrong size. It seems to be working fine, but it still turns off. I am guessing when something gets too hot inside the computer it turns itself off because I opened the case and put a fan blowing in the tower. I haven't had the problem since. I was wondering what could be wrong with my computer for this to happen and what I need to do about it.

Thanks!

Hi everyone, I have a compaq presario with windows xp home, recently I started receiving a long beep when I started my pc. And sometimes (different lengths of time in use) it would shut down and show black screen. I check out the post beeps and thought my memory might not be working right. I tried to reseat the memory, it seemed to clear the long beep, but then I started to do it again, I went and purchased new memory and still it gives a long beep or shuts down at different times in use. No specific pattern. I did notice a win32 error in the error log report. Any ideas as to what might be causing this problems.

Thanks
Jim

I wish to gather statistics concerning my internet connection's behaviour as reported by my router over an extended period. I am using a monitor similar to Routerstats, which will only record when the computer is fully on.

Would running the computer as per title for, say, up to a fortnight be safe for it?

A:How long is it safe to run a computer non-stop?

Yes no problem, just turn Windows automatic updates off, or some of them could trigger a reboot.
