Still unable to open Microsoft Outlook

Q: Still unable to open Microsoft Outlook

Lots of valuable information in that file I'd like to access. I was able to create a new Outlook file in safe mode so I guess the program is OK.

It was suggested to me recently the cause may have been due to me having Microsoft Service Pack 1 at the time. I had not updated to Service Pak 2 (which I now believe has been updated to Service Pak 3). Has anyone had experience with this and, if so, do you think there's a chance that if I update my Service Pak that I might still have a chance of recovering the data I had in my original Outlook file?

Preferred Solution: Still unable to open Microsoft Outlook

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/directdownload.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I dont think just upgrading to service pack 3 would do any good.

May be you need some more luck there.

Hope you get the help you need

We have all of our user's email set up to deliver to a personal folder that resides on a server with Windows 2003. We have a small number of people that get the error message below. They eventually get in, but either have to close outlook and reopen several times or they have to reboot their computer. Has anyone seen this before? Thanks!

"Cannot start Microsoft Office Outlook, Unable to open the Outlook window.
The set of folders could not be opened. The server is not available.
Contact your administrator if this condition persists."

I have tried every suggestion I could find on the internet, but still haven't found a solution.

any help would be much appreciated.

I am unable to open any hyperlink or any website that is contained in my microsoft outlook email. This just started occurring. I get the following error messages.
"Windows cannot open this file. Windows needs to know what program created it"
It gives me two choices: 1. use the web to find the program that created it or 2. select from a list. None of these options work. I hope that someone can help solve this problem as I am now unable to open any link or web contained in the email. As an example, I was unable to click on your "confirm registration" email when I just signed up for this forum. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

I notice that this problem has come up a lot but none of the suggested solutions seem to work for me so far. I am running windows vista and outlook 2007. It has been running fine for several years but suddenly won't open and I get the error message ' cannot open outlook window'. I have tried the 'outlook.exe/ resetnavpane' in the start search and then clicking on programme - it opens outlook but a completely new version with non of my contacts etc. Grateful for any ideas.

please help me, all my work on this email, and i need it.

A:Cannot start Microsoft Outlook. Cannot open the Outlook window."

Your post is not very clear, but the way I read it, it looks like you have cut your Outlook program on drive C & pasted it on drive D, is this correct?.
If this is the case can you try to reverse the procedure & put it back on drive C exactly where was before.. Moving a program from one drive to another can cause the system to lose its connection & cause problems.

Dear AllI am getting the above error when I try to open Outlook 2007 on Windows XP. There is a quick fix to this which is to run 'outlook.exe /resetnavpane', which I find from a quick internet search. However, this is a one time fix, and I am having to do it every single time that I boot up. Is there a more permanent fix to this problem - hopefully the fact that the above fix works will identify the root of the problem. If anyone knows this and can help I would be very grateful. Thanks AdamEDIT: Moved to more appropriate forum

A:Cannot start Microsoft Office Outlook, Cannot open the Outlook window

Is that the error message in its entirety?Could you provide a link to the outlook.exe /resetnavpane fix so we can look at it and see exactly what it does?

I can't open Outlook 2003 to get my email and the error message I get says: "errors have been detected in the C:\Users\Sparky\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Outlook\Outlook.pst." THe error message goes on to say to use the "Inbox repair tool (Scanpst.exe)
to diagnose and repair errors in the file."
I cannot find my outlook.pst nor the scanpst.exe files.
Got online and tried 4 different suggestions and none worked. Would anyone please have suggestions? I want to upgrade my OS & Office, but don't know if my files will be retained or not. Thank you to anyone who can help.

Does anyone have a fix for this issue?

A:Cannot start Microsoft Outlook. Cannot open the Outlook window.

I had this problem on a customers laptop with Vista Home Premium and Microsoft office 2007 Enterprise.

I've often seen similar errors with Office including things going wrong with Word, Excel, basically any Microsoft Office application.
Nearly all of these errors can be solved by allowing Office to re-create it's profile folders. I fixed the same problem you are having with this procedure...

1. Close all office applications
2. Browse to and RENAME the following folders (do not delete them if you wish to avoid losing any emails and address books). I normally stick an _ on the end to make it "foldername_"

For Microsoft Outlook...
C:\Users\<yourusername>\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Outlook
C:\Users\<yourusername>\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Outlook

For other Microsoft Office Programs...
C:\Users\<yourusername>\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Office
C:\Users\<yourusername>\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Office

3. Open problematic application (Outlook in this case)

The next problem you will have with OUTLOOK is your Personal Folders file will be new and therfore empty (none of your old emails, calendar or contacts in there!).
Don't panic though, all you need to do is the following...

1. Open Outlook
2. Go to File>Import and Export...
3. Choose "Import from another program of file" and click next
4. Choose "Personal Folder File (.pst)" and click next
5. Click the browse button and locate the folder that you previously renamed
C:\Users\<yourusername>\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Outlook_ ??
6. Choose the "Outlook.pst" file (which should be more than 1KB if it contains anything) and click the "Open" Button at the bottom
7. Click "Next" and then "Finish" and watch all of your lovely emails, calendar appointments and contacts fly back into your active profile!

Hope that works for you guys.

Are they pop3 or ?

Call your isp and they should walk you through the settings.

Unable to select Microsoft Photos app for .svg file association when using the Open With context menu

So I tried installing ownership context menu to actually access the Microsoft Photos app, which pointed to the directory, C:\Program Files\WindowsApps\

But there is no exe in that folder, and it seems when checking task manager and opening file location of the Microsoft Photos app when it's open, it points to a created folder inside the above folder. So it creates an individual folder each time the application is open.

The option isn't under Settings \ System \ Default Apps \ Choose default application by file type

Again, I run into the same problem without being able to select the application when trying to choose based on the .svg extension.

So there is no way of selecting the Microsoft Photos app to associate with .svg

So I'm kinda out of ideas here, assistance / thoughts appreciated

Hello Rhazes Welcome to the BC HijackThis Log and Analysis forum. I will be assisting you in cleaning up your system.I ask that you refrain from running tools other than those we suggest while we are cleaning up your computer. The reason for this is so we know what is going on with the machine at any time. Some programs can interfere with others and hamper the recovery process. In the upper right hand corner of the topic you will see a button called Options. If you click on this in the drop-down menu you can choose Track this topic. By doing this and then choosing Immediate E-Mail notification and then clicking on Proceed you will be advised when we respond the your topic and facilitate the cleaning of your machine. After 5 days if a topic is not replied to we assume it has been abandoned and it is closed.I would like for you to run another ARK scan:We need to scan for Rootkits with GMERPlease download GMER from one of the following locations, and save it to your desktop:Main Mirror
This version will download a randomly named file (Recommended)Zip Mirror
This version will download a zip file you will need to extract first. If you use this mirror, please extract the zip file to your desktop.Close any and all open programs, as this process may crash your computer.Double click or on your desktop.Allow the gmer.sys driver to load if asked. You may see this window. If you do, click No.

Click on and wait for the scan to finish. If you see a rootkit warning window, click OK.Push and save the logfile to your desktop.Copy and Paste the contents of that file in your next post. Please do not post any logs as an attachment unless asked to do so.Thanks, thewall

Hi and Welcome,
What was it that led you to installing Quick Heal? Have you tried uninstalling that to see if that solves the problem?
If not,I suggest you post a HijackThis log in the malware/hjt forum here at TSG.
You'll have to be patient and wait for an expert to advise you. Not that many experts to go around the numbers of help requests.

Can someone please help.

A:Can't Open Microsoft Outlook

Try to start Outlook in Safe Mode.

How to manually, start Outlook 2003 in safe mode?
Start | run ....browse to the full path to outlook.exe

add this to the end without the quotes and a space between exe and the slash "/safe"

For 2007
Hold down the ctrl key while you start Outlook 2007.
You have to keep the key down until Outlook starts and it will tell you it is
in "Safe Mode."

Hi there,

My wife is having problems with her laptop - she was trying to send an email with microsoft outlook but the laptop almost froze, the email ddid not send and outlook closed down. She has not been able to open outlook ever since - it comes up with an error report and has to close.

Any help would be very much appreciated.

A:Can't Open Microsoft Outlook

In order to help you we need the full error report.
Is it one of those Encountered a problem and needs to close, send don't send errors?
I'm not sure if that can be copied and pasted but you should be able to view the report and write down any info.

Another option is to uninstall and reinstall Outlook. She may loose her mail and address book with this option.

I am using windows vista and when I click to open Outlook for my email I receive the message "cannot open microsoft outlook. I tried to google it and was told to click on RUN or RUN AS but I can find no such place to click. I went into properties and found email repair and was told there could be a problem with my domain security so I went to my domain provider and changed the password but could not figure out how to change the password for outlook.
When I was able to read my email through the alternate route(using web mail instead of outlook) there was only three emails and there should have been thousands.

A:cannot open microsoft outlook

i think somehow your outlook connected to the webmail and downloaded the emails. that's why there are only thee emails.
there is an option in outlook that deletes everything from the server once its downloaded. you can disable that

New to Vista and chose Microsoft Outlook for emails as I loved it with 98 and XP. Most emails with attachments come through fine but when .jpg or .wmv files come through all I see are numbers and letters instead of pics and videos, any ideas please?
Thanks SteveT.

A:Can't open jpg or wmv in microsoft outlook

Do you see a button with a paperclip on it (usually in the upper right of the message pane)? When I used it for newsgroups, that's how attachments showed up (at least in newer versions of Outlook Express; in older versions, the pic would just appear in place).
Also, if you go to tools, options, advanced, security, "do not allow attachments to be saved or opened that could potentially contain a virus". I noticed that if that box was checked, I couldn't even download attached pictures!!! (dumb Microsoft!) I don't know if in later updates they fixed that.

Not sure if those 2 anecdotes will help, but just thought I'd toss them out.

First of all - thank you for allowing me to join this site.
I'm baffled by this - for the past three days or so - I have been unable to click on a link in an email. When I used to do this - the link would automatically open in the browser window. Now I'm getting this message . 'This operation has been canceled due to restrictions in effect on this computer. Please contact your system administrator.' This is very frustrating...how can something change like this? Thanks in advance for any advice.

I am running Vista home premium. My MS outlook 2007 was working just fine two days ago and now it won't open at all, when i came back to my computer to check email i got the following message:

"Cannot start Microsoft Office Outlook. Cannot open the Outlook window. The set of folders cannot be opened. Errors have been detected in the file C:\Documents and Settings\HP_Administrator\Local Settings\Application Data\Micorsoft\Outlook\Outlook.pst. Quit Outlook and all mail enabled applications, and then use the inbox repair too (Scanst.exe) to diagnose and repair errors in the file. For more information aouth the inbox repair tool, see Help".

I searched for that link and I couldn't find it anywhere in my computer, I also did a search for Scanst.exe file and nothing came up.
I am not a computer expert so any help will be very much appreciated.

Weird, I did a search for it and it wasn't there, too. So, I spend some time looking around, and was able to find the tool on my own.

Try going to C:\Prgram Files\Microsoft Office\Office12

It should be in there right under SCANOST. It's in all caps. Make sure you get the right one.

Best of luck.

MS Outlook 2000 will not open and shows the following error: "Microsoft Outlook has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience."

What do I do now?
Thanks

Does anyone have an idea why this is?
Thanks Chuck.

A:Unable to open photos in outlook.

It might be an idea to tell us what imaging/graphics programs he has on his machine.

Or you could tell him to download and install Irfanview and accept all the file type assignments it asks to use.

Background: A few days ago I went from a dial up service to broadband. I was using MSN as my ISP, but I have discontinued using MSN and have deleted it from my PC. It was after doing this that I started to have this problem. I do not know if the two are connected.

Okay I m a knucklead I saved an Outlook XP email file on to a cd How I clicked amp dragged the file s icon from the Personal Folders menu bar in Outlook to the My Documents icon under Other Shortcuts menu bar From there I moved the email file on to a cd-r Then I deleted the original email file from my Outlook Shortcuts bar I have done this exercise in the past and have always been able to save the emails in their original text format and most importantly able to re-open them by clicking on the cd-r email file icon Confession I have a very bad habit of clearing out hidden folders on my Unable XNK to files open Outlook hard drive to Unable to open XNK Outlook files save space and utilize Disc Cleanup and Defragmenter every night before turning off my computer My concern is that I may have deleted any backup pst files Unable to open XNK Outlook files that might restore this email file because Now I can t open the file that s on the cd When I click the icon Outlook reads quot Unable to Unable to open XNK Outlook files display the folder Microsoft Outlook could not access the specified folder location quot with an address bar that reads quot outlook a quot The email file also seems to be saved as an Exchange Shortcut or XNK I tried copying the email file from cd-r on to My Documents hard drive in a futile attempt to open the file with some other text format word works notebook etc Nor do I seem to have the option of forwarding the this file to my email address to see if I can open it as my Windows XP doesn t seem to trust XNK links to emails Damn frustrating So the question is How do I open an email file with an XNK link from the cd-r when Outlook does not recognize it and the pst file may no longer exist anywhere on my hard drive Any help would be greatly appreciated nbsp

A:Unable to open XNK Outlook files

XNK files are shortcuts, as you know. Uh, you deleted the original, the shortcut links to nowhere. The shortcut contains no information about the original file except where it was located.
Sorry, but it appears you don't have any way to get it back, unless you can undo what you did in cleaning up.

A:Computer Tries To Open/config Microsoft Outlook

Hello swobo96 and welcome to the BC HijackThis forum. I see no signs of viruses or malware in the log. It is clean.I do have a couple of recommendations:1 - It appears that there are multiple anti-virus applications running on this computer (BitDefender and Panda). It is not recommended to have this because it quite often leads to file access issues and if there is an infection the multiple programs can block each other from dealing with the infected file. I highly recommend that you choose which application you want to keep and uninstall the other one(s) to prevent these problems.2 - It also appears that both Ewido and AVG AntiSpyware are installed. Ewido has been discontinued and is now a part of AVG AS. I would recommend uninstalling Ewido since it is no longer supported.Other than that, the log looks good. In regards to the installation/error messages, they point to an incomplete or corrupt MS Office installation. You should either allow the installation to take place or complete or uninstall the package. They will not go away until one or the other is performed. For assistance with installing or removing MS Office I suggest posting in the XP forum here: http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/f/56/windows-xp-home-and-professional/ . They can assist with any application specific issues and offer guidance on installation and removal of Windows applicaitons.Cheers.OT

I have a Microsoft Office Outlook file that won't open. Each time I attempt to do so I get a box that comes up and reads cannot start Microsoft Office Outlook. Cannot open file: C:\Documents and Settings\Administrator\My Documents\Wrong Number.msg. the file may not exist, you may not have permission to open it, etc. I right clicked properties on the folder and it shows a 7.6 MB file that should open with Microsoft Office Outlook. Does anyone know why this may happen?

Hello-

I use MS Outlook. I always have it open, the process uses about 18MB to 20MB of RAM when idle. That's no problem. The problem is Microsoft Word. It is alway open with Outlook. Word uses about 40MB to 50MB of RAM when idle. Just sitting, I'm already down 58MB to 70MB of RAM. Is there anything that can be done about that? I'm in no way short of memory (1280MB installed), but I haven't noticed it on other machines I've worked on.

Any thoughts?

Thanks
PJ

A:Microsoft Outlook open Application Error

You can try either uninstalling Microsoft Office, resetting your browser(s), and reinstalling Office, or you can try making changes to the registry. Note -- you should always back up the registry first before making any major changes to it. More details in this link: http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/office/forum/office_2010-office_install/internet-links-not-working-in-outlook-2010-general/17f72de9-671a-41d6-ab86-fd39b823dff9

See whether you can find All Programs > MS Office > Office Tools > Office Diagnostics. Run that and see what happens. I have only Office 2007, so I am not 100% certain whether that is the same setup for 2010.

I'm running office 2000 on XP OS. I was trying to upload pages to a new website and I turned off the firewall. Left it off all night with PC still going.
Tried to get on the Internet and kept getting the white page sever not found.
Uninstalled IE and reinstalled. Still did not work. Downloaded Spybot and ran it. Found allot of crap. Cleaned it all off and IE worked again but now if I try to open Microsoft Outlook I get this message.
This feature requires Microsoft Internet Explorer 4.01 or greater.
If I try to open Front Page I get this error.
This feature requires Microsoft Internet Explorer 3.00 or greater.

IE is working fine so I'm not sure what to do here.

Please post and email me if possible.

Hello Community,

I'm having an issue here, and reading through threads and forum posts - i'm getting nowhere.

I get no error messages when trying to open a file from a mapped drive.

I have a user onsite unable to open any Mircosoft Office 2013 files from any of his mapped network drives. If he takes the files, copies them locally to his laptop, then open perfectly fine. However, if i try to open a office file from their mapped drive, it just opens up a blank document.

--I've done the changing folder name of the Microsoft folder within %AppData%, still no luck.
--I've tried repairing Microsoft Office, still no luck.

I don't want to uninstall office, then re-install as i will have to drop the computer off our domain (Group Policy for some reason, blocks office.) *I'd prefer this to be the final option.

Surely there must be a fix around? Much thanks!

This is pretty interesting, I have no problem opening an excel document using office 97 software. It seems like I have the trouble in outlook 2000. If I create a new mail message and insert an attachment I am unable to view the attachment. I also get an error stating "The system cannot find the file specified"." Excel opens but doesn't display the page or a blank page. There is no problem when I try the same with word. It's kind of weird because we are using terminal server here and this is the only session that I am having problems with. Please let me know if anyone has run into this problem.
Thanks

A:Unable to open excel docs with outlook

It is a security thing with MS and outlook. Here is how to fix in in Outlook 2002, it might work with 2000 or you might lower your security setting but I tried when I had 2000 and it didn't help. I had to forward every attachment to outlook express.

Try this and see if it helps.

Opening ALL Attachments with the Outlook E-mail Security Update and Outlook 2002:
Outlook 2002 allows the user to use a registry key to open up access to blocked attachments.
To use this key:
Run Regedit, and go to this key:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\10.0\Outlook\Security
Under that key, add a new string value named Level1Remove.
For the value for Level1Remove, enter a semicolon-delimited list of file extensions.
For example, entering this:

mdb;url

would unblock Microsoft Access files and Internet shortcuts.
Here is a list of most of the extensions that are blocked. You can copy and paste this list into the registry key.
ade; adp; asx; bas; bat; chm; cmd; com; cpl; crt; exe; hlp; hta; inf; ins; isp; js; jse; lnk; mda; mdb; mde; mdz; msc; msi; msp; mst; pcd; pif; prf; reg; scf; scr; sct; shb; shs; url; vb; vbe; vbs; wsc; wsf; wsh
If you are using this registry entry, a glance at Help / About Microsoft Outlook will show Security Mode: User Controlled above the license information.
For your convenience, Outlook MVP Ken Slovak has written a free COM add-in that adds an Attachment Security Options page to the Tools / Options dialog in Outlook 2002. This add-in is effective only in Outlook 2002, because earlier versions do not support the registry entry listed above.
After applying this registry fix or using the COM add-in, the user still has to save the attached file to a system drive before opening it. In essence, the fix rolls the attachment behavior back to Outlook 2000 SR-1, with its included Attachment Security Fix.

I hope someone out there can help me.
I am using Windows XP Home Edition and cannot open any attachments in Outlook Express. This includes JPG, PPS, PDF, and other types of files. I also cannot download any files from web pages opened in Internet Explorer when using the normal download utility. If I go to a third party download, it works fine.
I have tried just about every thing suggested in this forum to fix the problem, but I have not had any luck. This started about a month ago when I was using IE 6. I thought installing IE 7RC1 might solve the problem, but it didnít. The only error message being generated occurs when I try to save an attachment. It says the operaion could not be compleed (or something like that).
One note that might help: when using Thunderbird, every thing works as it should.
Does anyone have a clue that might help me?

A:Unable to open pdf attachment in Outlook 2003

Is it possible that there is embedded Java script in the file? I know of other issues with this and there is a box to check off in the Preferences under Java Script. This option recently drew some concern from Adobe though because of a potential malicious code exploit, so I'd wonder about those PDF's from Russia.

Not sure if this advice will help, I hope you get it resolved.

For some 'unfun' reason my Outlook has stopped opening doc/jpg/etc. attachments (still opens email attachment-.eml). I can open the attachment in webmail.

I get "Can't create file: right click folder to create the file in, click properties on shortcut menu to check your permissions to open the folder ." I also get Can't create file" when I try to save the attachment.

It's a pain to have to open in webmail when I want to save files to my harddrive.

Would GREATLY appreciate any assistance in correcting this.

A:Unable open pdf files in Outlook Express help!

PDF is not usually used for pictures, but rather for documents with type, pictures and layout that need to keep the same layout when distributed.

to open PDF you will need to have Adobe Acrobat Reader installed.
You can get it for free at the adobe website.

We have several end users who have reported the following problem:

While working in Excel, the user(s) will wish to send a file via email. They select File --> Send To --> Mail Recipient (as attachment) and get an error stating that Outlook was unable to open one or more attachments.

If the user saves the file locally (to their desktop or My Documents for example) and then creates a new email in Outlook, they are able to attach the file to the email (by choosing to insert attachment/clicking the paperclip) and send it in that way.

Has anyone experienced this? Is there a reason? Is there a way to fix it? Our users much prefer the shortcut of sending excel worksheets as attachments from within the program.

All the PCs are running Windows XP Professional and Office 2003.

What is set in Control Panel ==> Default Programs ==> Associate a file type or protocol
for Protocol MAILTO (protocols are all the way down after file types)

and what is set in Control Panel ==> Default Programs ==> Set your default programs ==> Outlook
are all of the defaults set? "This program has all its defaults"

You might want to compare your settings against one of the machines that doesn't have the problem.

Microsoft Fix it? I think you are doing something wrong. Program Scanpst.exe is located in your Office installation folder in ProgramFiles and has nothing to do with that message.

I have Windows XP (2007).
When trying to open Outlook - message says cannot start, cannot open window, the pst folder has errors - use Inbox Repair Tool. When using the repair tool, the test results say minor discrepancies found, optional to repair. When I don't repair, Outlook still doesn't open. When I use the Repair Tool and begin the repair, the repair gets hung and stops. When I try to copy the PST file to an external hard drive to save it and possibly delete and reload, it cannot copy saying "I/O error".

Background, for quite a while, opening Outlook has begun with message that a personal folder did not close properly - checking. Have run the Inbox Repair Tool in the past and it has worked.

But for now - can't go past the above blocks. Any suggestions?
Thank you.

Please Note - There is no warranty implied with the program, and it is provided As Is only -

After you reboot are these the listed problems (above) given to you, and no other directions ?

I am running Office 2003 and Windows 7.
On trying to open Outlook I get the following error message "unable to open your default e mail folders. the information store could not be opened". This is a new fault. The system was previously working. Problems started when I replaced the outlook.pst file with info from another computer. However I did a recovery and it started to work again with the new outlook.pst. However it has now gone back to the above referenced error message.
I have run scanpst on the outlook.pst file but it comes back with no faults. I have removed Office 2003 and re-installed but all to no avail.

Anyone any ideas.

Hi there

After upgrading from Windows 7 to Windows 10, we are having an issue on one of the device in relation to opening Mail (Microsoft Outlook 2016) icon in Control Panel. It didn't open the window Mail Setup - Email accounts, Data Files, and Show profiles etc etc.

BTW ... we are using Microsoft Office 365 online services and download from MicrosoftOnline.com

What I've done so far:
1. After the upgrade, all Office not working (Excel, Word etc etc)
2. Uninstall from Program and Features >> Didn't work
3. Force to unstalled manually via Microsoft Tool >> Complete remove
4. Reinstall Office 2016 >> Mail icon didn't work
5. Do Office Quick Repair >> Mail icon didn't work
6. Do Office Online Repair >> Mail icon didn't work
7. Uninstall and reinstall Office 2016 >> Mail icon didn't work

Any ideas?

A:[SOLVED] Hijacked home paged, unable to open regedit and Outlook

I found fix for locked registry editor:
As part of their routine, many worms and Trojans make changes to the registry. Some of them change one or more of the shell\open\command keys. If these keys are changed, the worm or Trojan will run each time that you run certain files.

For example, if the \exefile\shell\open\command key is changed, the threat will run each time that you run any .exe file. This may also stop you from running the Registry Editor to try to fix this.

They may also change a registry value so that you cannot run the Registry Editor at all.

Symantec Security Response has created a tool to reset these registry values to their default settings.

WARNING:
Do not use this tool unless:
A Symantec technician or document directs you to do so.
After reading the removal instructions in the writeup, you are sure that the tool is required.

Follow these steps:

Download the file UnHookExec.inf and save it to your Windows desktop.

(If you cannot connect to the Internet from the infected computer, download to an uninfected computer then save it to a floppy disk. Then take the floppy disk and insert it in the floppy disk drive of the infected computer.)

Note: The tool has a .inf file extension.

Locate the download file, either on the Windows desktop or the floppy disk.

Right-click the UnHookExec.inf file and click install. (This is a small file. It does not display any notice or boxes when you run it.)

Follow any other instructions for the threat that you are trying to remove.
