I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I have a really weird problem with my laptop.
Although the internet connection works good, yesterday I noticed that the wifi icon on the taskbar was disappered.
I tried to open "network connections" in the settings of the start menu and the page was blank without any connections.
I tried to plug the ethernet cable but nothing changed.

Do you know what is the problem? do you think that is due to viruses?

Thanks in advance

A:Network connections and wifi icon

Do a System Restore to a time when this was not happening.
Restart the computer and press F8 and choose Safe Mode With Networking. Then go to Start/Run and type ncpa.cpl and press enter. Are there any network connections there?
This is usually caused by a virus, please click on the link in my signature for Virus/Malware Help and post in that section of the forum for more help.

I want to enable WIFI, but there is no icon on the Network Connections page of the Control Panel. All I see is a box with this info:

"Local Area Connection - Network 4 - Intel(R) 82578DC Gigabit Network Connection"

How do I add a WIFI icon to the Network Connections page?

My router is (AT&T) 2-Wire 3800HGV-B (the router sees a wireless dongle on my TV, so I know WIFI is active).

OS: Windows 7 64-bit.

I have been searching but have not searched perhaps as far as I should
In my Windows 8 taskbar on the right there are a few items I can select and customize but see no selection for network icons.
I am using Windows 8 with Start8 product add-in.
I can see speaker icon, skydrive icon, troubleshooting icon and so on......

This is an HP Envy 15t laptop.

I can get to Charms to show up and select Devices.....among other things

Thank you in advance

A:Can I add Network (Ethernet and WIFI) icon to taskbar?

Hello Peter,

You should be able to turn on the Network icon for your taskbar in your System Icons settings below.
System Icons - Turn On or Off - Windows 7 Help Forums
If you mean the Charms bar (black bar on right that slides in), then click on the Settings charm to see the Network icon at the top right corner of the bottom section.
Charms Bar - Open in Windows 8

If you like, here's a shortcut below that opens directly to the Networks flyout.

Well, due to other issues (thank you Cnet download for installing all kinds of malware on my computer with the program I was trying to get), I had to use a system restore to get rid of something that took over my computer and it also fixed this issue. I used a restore point from before the Windows update that I installed.

As you can see, it's not very smooth. The white curved lines have bluish spots inside. When I first installed Windows 10 on a virtual hard disk (vhd), nvidia drivers for my gtx 760 installed automatically by Windows 10 and the icon was very smooth. Later, I had to do a fresh install of Windows 10 on a Samsung Evo SSD and this time, it didn't install my graphics card driver automatically, I had to download it from nvidia's website. Anyway, how can I improve the look of this icon and make it smooth?

Hi i have a hp probook 4530s. I recently installed a new norton security package upon restart the wifi icon amd every thing to do with wifi has dissapeared. There is a wifi on off button on the keypad area and when i press it, all that seems to happen is the Bluetooth turns on/off i have looked in the network adapters amd nothing is there. Its like wifi option has just got up and left my laptop. I recently upgraded to windows 10 and when i went to the hp support site they dont provide drivers for windows 10 as i was going to try install the drivers for wifi again. Im stumped can anyone help?

I remember seeing a post on the HP Forums about this, but just now, I can't find it. From what I remember, this was a known problem with the new Norton security package. You should check the Norton security forums to see about this as they probably have a fix for it.

Wifi icon shows a red x. never getting far enough to even validate that After I click Close to that the Wifi icon then shows with a red white x I can then no longer see any wifi networks available at all After a minute or so the red white 'x' goes away and I can then try again but get the exact same results The network card that was in the laptop DW didn't technically have a Windows driver from Dell so I took a card from a different laptop that is supported DW but it has the exact same results I also tried connecting to a different wifi and got the exact same results Anyone have any idea what might be causing this or how I can fix it My other laptops phones Fire TV stick etc can all connect to the router just fine The laptop was just reimaged a week or so ago and worked fine for a few days before this happened Thanks

My Wifi Icon appears different sometimes. The Wifi works with both Icons, but I was just curious what one of them was. == The one below with the cone is how it should be. But then sometimes I get the one with the monitor and a cord like the Wifi is unplugged, but it still works. I was just curious what the one with the monitor was supposed to mean?

A:WiFi Icon

The one with the monitor and the Ethernet cable is showing that the Ethernet connection is working.

Usually if an Ethernet cable is plugged in it will override the Wireless connection and Windows will choose the Ethernet connection. If you unplug the cable it will go back to using the wireless connection.

The Wifi icon in the task bar (attachment) usually stayed solid with 5 bars, but after a Windows 8.1 reinstall the Wifi icon fluctuates up to 5 bars when i open a web page and down even to two bars when no web page is open. The Wifi signal is quite good at the moment but at times i do get drop outs. I have a TP Link WN8200ND USB adapter and sometimes the computer is unable to recognize it and i have to unplug it and replug to get connection again. I`ve update the appropriate drivers uninstalled and reinstalled but no change. Somebody who knows please?

My system was functioning fine until I was at the hospital and a unsecure network message came up on my computer. I went to my hotspot so my daughter could do her homework. The next time we got on the laptop there was no wireless connection for my hotspot and the wifi symbol was not lit up I tried the f2 key but still no luck. When I go thru the WLAN utility from control panel it says "there were no adapters available and enabled". I tried to restore to an earlier date but it said " there were no changes made" and the network connections do not show any of the wifi connections. I have looked on device mngr to see if there were any "!" and there are none. I'm not sure if the hosp. wifi somehow confused my WLAN card. I am baffled.

Does anyone know how to change this icon back to a WiFi icon? This is on my laptop and it is really annoying that I see this instead of the signal strength of the network I am connected to. Also, whenever I move the mouse over the icon to see the network I am connected to (I have two) it always displays the wrong router name until I click on the button that opens the WiFi connect window. I don't know why this is like this but it seemed to have happened after I plugged in my Ethernet to transfer some files to my Xbox. It has never returned to the original icon since then.

Any help would be appreciated,

A:WiFi Icon

Is there an arrow just on the left of the icons ? If so, click that and it should show the full range of icons available, one of which should be your signal strength. What you are seeing is the icon for your ethernet connection status(not connected at present)

More of a trivial question, but for anyone else who has the Windows 7 Ultimate RC, what color is your Wifi icon? I've saw screenshots of people who also have W7RC and their Wifi color is green. On my build my Wifi color is gray. It's because it was gray I initially thought my Wifi wasn't working.

Hello Aln688, and welcome to Seven Forums.

It's for the signal strength. The more green the stronger the signal.

Left click on the network icon in the notification area and choose "open network and sharing" and then select change adapter settings. There you will see if they are both enabled. And if you only want wifi than disable the "local area connection" and vice versa.

Trying to be certain I have all the W10 drivers ... so using the System Detect feature which, I don't think is working.  Trying to fix:

Suspecting a driver issue (recently upgraded to W10 from 8.1), trying to check drivers.  System Detect has been running for HOURS ... with a lot of disk activity, but seems 'hung' (see screen shot).
Computer is on the Dell W10 approved list.  Inspiron 3521.  Any help is greatly appreciated.

Then Click on System configuration tab and then Click on Components and find the wireless card of the system and then download the wireless card driver found under Network section.
If you are not able to determine the wireless card. Please private message me the system service tag so that I can check and provide you the correct driver.

Windows 10 has been working just fine for me since I upgraded my Lenovo laptop from Windows 7 to Window 10 last year. It automatically connects me to my home network when I start Windows. Until just a few days ago the icon in the system tray was the normal icon for a network connection. A few days ago the icon change to the icon for the airplane mode even though I am not in airplane mode. My WiFi connection is working as it always has but the icon is wrong. Turning airplane mode on and off does not solve the problem.

What do you recommend?

I don't know about Windows 10,. however Windows 7's icons can be changed via: right-click on icon, properties, change icon; however, you have to change the "master icon" wherever it is on the hard-drive, I think the next restart will give you what you want in the notification tray.

See if there's an Update for your Sound driver. It may be cued in optional Windows Updates after enabling Automatically get recommended drivers and updates for your hardware . Check there first. If not the latest driver for your model from Toshiba Model Content Page is from 2009, so I'd probably try to find a newer one on Realtek Support Downloads.

Otherwise uninstall it in Device Manager and reboot.

Hello JingleJangle, and welcome to Seven Forums.

It looks like your shortcut arrow overlay icon got messed up somehow. You can use either method in the tutorial below to restore the arrow icon. Method Two is the easiest way with the program.

I don't want to combine my windows, but when i have only one window open in any program, i know what it is and don't need to see the label as that makes the whole taskbar filled up pretty fast.
Is there a way to hide labels when there is one window open, and show labels when having multiple windows?
I've tried googling it but it doesn't seem like it is possible with some program either.

A:Taskbar, only icon when one window, icon+label when multiple windows?

Nevermind, catered to my needs by altering the minimum width of the taskbar "entries".

Yes, this virus is still out there and somehow it got to me, and on my day off to..
Anyways, I have Webroot spy sweeper and AVG:Free Edition control center. The AVG is always turned on but my WebRoot wasn't. I scanned with both and the Virus icon is still there. Its the one that keeps popping up with a message saying that my computer is infected. Critical System Error! System detected virus activites, they may cause critical system faiulre ect.. My Web Root has not got rid of it after sweeping my system twice. I got a message earlier to install Spysweeper Quake? But I did not. Anyone have any info on how to get rid of this thing? I have no idea how to access my hijack logs. Any easy instructions on how to get rid of this annoying virus icon would be appreciated.
Thanks in advance!

Hey, I've been coming to this forum for a while now since I set up my Windows 7 system, the tutorials here are fantastic, and have helped me customized Windows 7 just the way I want it!

except just after the last couple of days, I noticed that a few of the icons in the start menu were missing, and replaced with what looks like an Adobe Illustrator file icon, and when I open the program, it also shows the Illustrator icon on the task bar :S

I was just wondering if any of you might know what would cause something like this, and I greatly appreciate any help that is given

I'll attach a photo to show you exactly what I mean:

Has anyone of you noticed this?

I need help getting to the bottom of this, not sure why it's happening, or when it started happening, maybe a week ago...

I get a seemingly random icon flash on the taskbar for no more than a few miliseconds, so i checked
event viewer to track down what was happening and the only thing i can find is 2 events in the subcategory
Application that states the source as RestartManager
and the event ID as 10000 and 10001, these both appear every time the icon flashes on the taskbar

I think this issue is also causing fullscreen flash vids to show the taskbar and a loading circle on the cursor... also Battlefield 4 likes to get a black screen then when i alt-tab i'm back to the game without any crashing or any error besides this ominous
black screen

I'm running 8.1 legit

1) no IE icon on desktop or in programs. i have internet access through verizon. i recently got windows update to install IE7 in the hope that would restore the icon/program but the only way i can access the internet is via the verizon browser. i clearly installed IE7 because now the "sidebar" of my verizon browser says that "sidebar i currently not compatible with IE7...". so why can't i get the IE7 icon in my program list or desktop?

i have attached the HijackThis file

2)my volume controls have disappeared from my windows taskbar and i'd like it back. do you know how?

The shortcut icons for my desktop icons are all missing and have been for about a year. I foolishly must have installed something at some point that removed the shortcut icons. I just started searching for results only to find a solution on this forum.

The problem is that the information that I need is in closed threads that no longer have the attachments that I would need to solve this issue.

The following link was the article that I found that had the correct info that I needed.

I have created a shortcut icon which takes me directly to my Online Banking Login page.
I would like to place this icon (an image of a padlock taken from windows icon cache) on the taskbar.
My problem is, when I drag the icon to the taskbar a popup asks me if I want to 'Pin to Internet Explorer'...this is the only option given.
If I drop the icon onto the taskbar it changes my 'Padlock' icon to that of Internet Explorer...Clicking on this IE icon still takes me to my Online Banking Login page but I find it confusing having an IE icon.

Does anyone know how I can have my 'Padlock' icon showing on the taskbar.

I have been having this issue for two months and am getting tired of it, my wifi icon is almost always "disconnected" even when I'm connected, and I have to manually enter a wireless's network info each time I change networks. Other than that no particular problems. I updated the driver, and everything was fine before (I don't mean that it was because of the update). Only changes where program installations (but no device controllers of firewalls or...), and I fiddled with the services a bit but normally all the ones necessary for wifi are ok.

I seem to have a problem with my WiFi. Left-clicking the wireless icon in system tray doesn't work as in literally nothing happens. When I open the network and sharing center and click on "connect to a network" then also nothing happens. Right now it's only a minor problem, because my laptop auto-connects to networks it already knows but when I want to connect to a public WiFi in a cafe for example I can't look up any networks.

Also I'd like to point out that setting up a new connection to connect to a WiFi works but for that I need to already know the network name and security type. Windows can't find any problems either and I've reinstalled all network adapter drivers.

Hope anyone has any ideas and thanks in advance.

Sometimes Windows 7 SP1 shows a warning triangle on the WiFi system tray icon. The warning triangle is a yellow triangle with a black exclamation point in it.

Here is how it looks:

How does one determine what is causing that warning?

The WiFi works fine. The icon's tooltip shows the correct SSID, with "Internet access" in italics below it. Clicking on the icon shows that Windows is connected to the correct SSID. Everything seems to work fine, but Windows must think there is some sort of issue. There is no indication, outside of the triangle of what that issue could be.

What's causing that warning triangle?

i would appreciate the help

A:after a factory reset - i am missing wifi bars icon

Try this:

1) Right-click on your LAN icon in the lower right-hand side of your task bar and select "Open Network And Sharing Center."
2) On the left-hand side of the Network Sharing Center choose "Change Adapter Settings."
3) Make sure that your "Wireless Network Connection" icon is enabled by right-clicking on it and selecting "enabled". You'll know that it is already enabled if the right-click menu option says "disable".

If that doesn't work, you might be missing a driver or another piece of software-like item. Did you buy this machine brand new?
Also, please use the TechGuy SysInfo utility and paste the results in this thread via a reply.

Welcome to the Seven Forums

How did you change the icon?

Do Option 2 of this tutorial SFC /SCANNOW Command - System File Checker it will not harm any data or programs you have installed it will try to find and repair any corrupt system files that you have. You may need to do this up to 3 times with a reboot after each scan.

Then do Icon Cache - Rebuild

And maybe Notification Area Icons - Reset

Anybody noise, know merely 3040 with that screen mouse Optiplex and beeping solid a a computer icon, strange a BSOD smaller - this be? icon mute was the power button of the computer At first I thought it must have been the new Windows BSOD When I googled it though I couldn t find any similar incident the BSOD appears different from her description too I checked the event log but there was nothing critical or error that I couldn t account for It has Kaspersky internet security installed and it s up to date so I doubt it s some virus malware Plus the computer is new - months Now I m wondering if it was indicative of hardware failure or power surge I asked her to take a photo next time she sees it but I thought I d ask here in the meantime nbsp - I ve seen computers coming up with a screen from the MoBo informing me that the computer was locked in order to avoid damage from a power surge that just happened But Optiplex 3040 micro strange BSOD - beeping noise, merely a solid screen with a computer icon, a smaller mute icon and mouse support! Anybody know that this might be? never seen one with a mouse cursor and no text at all Anybody with a dell having come across anything similar any idea what that might

At Windows 7, I created 3 program shortcuts which execute same executable. Then I changed icons for second shortcut and third shortcut. When I launched the executable from the second and third shortcut, the taskbar icon of the executable will be that of the shortcut icon instead of the executable MainForm icon. In XP and Vista, it will use MainForm icon in the taskbar. Is this the intended behaviour of Windows 7?

A:Windows 7 use shortcut icon as taskbar icon

Looks that way...

Oh, is this not a service any more then? When KB3035583 first came out it installed a service called GWX, has this GWX service disappeared today and been replaced by these scheduled tasks? Would other scheduled task managing programs let you disable this: for example windows' task scheduler or CCleaner(startups section, scheduled tasks tab, maybe tick "advanced")?

Hi, please help me solve this simple problem..My icons (image), the picture went missing, now only showing the default file type. And you know it is troublesome for a designer to view every folder to know its content, when I could just view it first hand without opening the folder. This is how it looks now. When normally it looks like this, the one is circled is how it should normally be like, but after a few seconds it turn into the ones i marked Xim quite frustrated over this. Please let me know what happened.Thanks<3,BX

A:Icon's (icon Image Preview) Went Missing

Open up Windows Explorer, click on the Tools menu and select Folder Options
Click on the View tab
In the window that opens, uncheck the top box that says "Always show icons, never thumbnails" and then click on Apply

Check your folders to see if this change has taken affect.

BTW - if you can't see the menu items, press the Alt key and the File...Edit...View...Tools...Help menu items should appear. To keep this behavior permanent, put a check in the 2nd box where it states "Always show menus"

Everytime i delete an icon on my desktop, another one becomes transparent I've been looking what was the problem couldn't find anything.

A:Icon on desktop goes transparent after deleting another icon

Are you saying you now have several transparent icons on the desktop? What happens if you click an empty part of the desktop? Do the icons go back to their original look or do they stay transparent? What happens if you restart the computer?

You could try rebuilding the icon cache.

Hello 3lpete and welcome to the BC HijackThis forum. I don't see any signs of viruses or malware in the log. It's clean. Let's try a different scanner and see what we can see. Before running a new scan let's clean out the temporoary folders. Download ATF Cleaner to your Desktop.Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.Click Select All found at the bottom of the list.Click the Empty Selected button. If you use Firefox browser, do this also:Click Firefox at the top and choose Select All from the list.Click the Empty Selected button.NOTE : If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt. If you use Opera browser, do this also:Click Opera at the top and choose Select All from the list.Close ALL Internet browsers (very important).Click the Empty Selected button.NOTE : If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.Click Exit on the Main menu to close the program. Now download WinPFind35u.exe to your Desktop and double-click on it to extract the files. It will create a folder named WinPFind35u on your desktop.Note: You must be logged on to the system with an account that has Administrator privileges to run this program.Close ALL OTHER PROGRAMS.Open the WinPFind3u folder and double-click on WinPFind35U.exe to start the program (if you are running on Vista then right-click the program and choose Run as Administrator). In the Drivers section click on Non-Microsoft.Under Additional Scans click the checkboxes in front of the following items to select them:Reg - BotCheck
File - Additional Folder Scans
Do not change any other settings. Now click the Run Scan button on the toolbar.Let it run unhindered until it finishes. When the scan is complete Notepad will open with the report file loaded in it.Click the Format menu and make sure that Wordwrap is not checked. If it is then click on it to uncheck it.Use the Add Reply button and Copy/Paste the information back here. I will review it when it comes in. Make sure that the first line is code with brackets around it [] and that the last line is /code with brackets around it [].If, after posting, the last line is not /code with brackets around it then the log is too big to fit into a single post and you will need to split it into multiple posts or attach it as a file.Cheers.OT

i cannot change the explorer icon nest to the start orb.I've downloaded the themes at deviantart and followed each and every steps..and use resHack also.but i still can't change it.Any idea?

A:cannot change explorer icon (icon next to start orb)

Should be able to just right click on the explorer icon, then right again where it says Windows Explorer, then Properties, change icon. Point to where the new icon you want to change to is, and apply. Might have to reboot for it to change.

Hello I really try to find a way to get the following issue on MS developers radar If there is any reliable way to contact them I would be very thankful for a short note I tried it in the Resources and Tools for IT Professionals TechNet forum but I got only one response and no one from MS So I try it here due Icon refresh introduced icon win+d key flicker with since I guess here are a lot of smart people The problem I notice a short flicker from desktop icons when you press the quot win d quot short cut Sometimes some application windows also Icon flicker introduced due icon refresh with win+d key flicker when you use this short cut I guess the reason is some kind of refresh for the icons actually it seems to be the same behaviour when you use the context menu on the desktop right mouse click and use the command quot refresh quot It can easily be seen when you are on the desktop with all it's icons and have a small window open and then press win d a couple of times The Icons refresh and therefore flicker That should be smoothed out I notice this behaviour in Win Win XP This is no problem with a similar command in OSX or Ubuntu I find this behaviour visually highly annoying and not smooth I would be very happy when this short flicker would be solved for a smoother visual experience What do you think about it kind regards

A:Icon flicker introduced due icon refresh with win+d key

Doesn't do it for me. When I press Win+D multiple times, the current window (my browser) minimizes and the Control Panel icon (the last one I had clicked on) is highlighted, then the next press brings the browser window back exactly as it was. No flicker of any kind.

Sounds to me like a video/monitor problem.

Go to the Computer manufactures website and Help-support section for Wifi driver updates,
They will usually have a utility to auto search all existing drivers and post the updated releases,
You can also try Intel directly but most will recommend getting them from the manufacture's website.

Until yesterday, everything worked fine, but I let my laptop to my children and ...

I lost Wifi Icon for another type of icon, I mean the small icon between volume and hour (see "Win7 network.jpg").
Usually, I could view all possible Wifi networks, now I see none, it says "no identified network card".

I tried to de-activate and re-activate the wireless connections, but without success.

"Win7 network 2.jpg" is what I see when I unplugged the LAN cable.

Thanks 4 helping

P.S. Restauration did not help.

About 3 weeks ago, I was using a public WIFI connection. *something* went wrong, my computer froze up, and ever since, my system icons have been disabled and I can only connect to my home WIFI connection - by going to the control panel and manually connecting. Since I no longer have my connectivity icon, I can not view the available networks, and therefore cannot select one to connect to. Only my home WIFI connection works.
This is bad, since I will be moving soon and leaving my home network. I have tried every tutorial I have last resort would be reinstalling the OS...but I'm not even sure that would work. I am running Windows 7 Home Premium. Any ideas?

A:Can only connect to home WIFI, possibly due to no system icon access?

Do you have more information on this *something* that went wrong? Could it have been a virus? What antivirus do you have? Is it, and windows update ... all up to date?

Have you tried going into network and sharing center and using it to find another network (should be something there that says connect to a network). You might try first downloading the wireless adapter driver from its correct website and saving it to your computer, removing your current one, and then installing the newer one you just downloaded. You will have to reenter the network password (if you have one, and you should) for your home network, but hopefully this will solve the problem.

Let me know what wireless adapter you have and I can look for the correct download for you
