touch screen has two lines across the top

Q: touch screen has two lines across the top

I just bought an R5-571T from Best Buy. It's a two in one, but there is a doulbe ine that goes across the top of the screen. My initial though was that it served a purpose and there was some setting that was causing it, but I haven't been able to find anything. I took a screen shot, but the lines do not show up in the screen shot. If you're using the Chrome browswer the location would be right through the middle of the tabs going accross the whole screen or about 3mm down from the top and the lines are about 1mm apart.

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

My Ideapad S415 touch screen has suddenly stopped working.  I've had a tech connect to my PC and try a BIOS reload of default settings, plus unistalling all "HID" devices in Device Manager with no resolution.  I've also tried a system restore with no luck. The system properties does see the touch capability. Suggestions? Thanks.

hi Hersh,
Welcome to Lenovo Community Forums!
First do a Power Drain
     (If the battery is removable)
Remove AC and Battery and hold the power button down for 15 sec.
Turn the computer back on and see if the Touch capability is now detected under System Properties,
                  If not
I suggest you contact Lenovo Technical Team about the Issue as this may be a device detection issue.

A:Lenovo S210 Touch broken LCD and Touch screen

Hi Magnutus, welcome to the forums.
Please check if you Lenovo S210 is on warranty under with this tool.
After that you can open a ticket with Lenovo for the screen to be fixed, if it is not under warranty it will have a cost.
If you are the guys that like to fix it yourself (and it is not under warranty) I can recommend you to check the support site for your model, read the Hardware Maintenance Manual (on the documents area) and check how the machine is organized on the inside. On the parts lookup page you can find the parts number so you can find a replacements for the component that is giving you issues.
I hope this links helps you.

Yesterday I was on my laptop and before I shut it down it went into what looked like a different mode. I booted it up this morning and it is still in this mode. It looks like touch screen mode but I do not have a touch screen.  The icons on the task bar are spaced out and there is a back button on the task bar too which is not normally there. When i right click against the task bar, one of the buttons says "Show touch keyboard button".  All of my files are spead out as if to have room for touching if I had a touch screen but I do not. I am finding this very annoying because I cannot get onto my desktop properly and is not in the right mode. Please help!

Hello @JeffJadoo, Thank you for visiting the HP Forums! The Forums are a great place where you can find solutions for your issues, with help from the community! I understand that you are having an issue with the Touch Screen, and wanted to assist you! Did the notebook originally ship with Windows 10?  How did you go about formatting the notebook, and installing Windows 7?  You may be able to use the Recovery Manager to restore the drivers, however, based on how you installed Windows, the Recovery Partition may already be removed.  You can also try reviewing the following document, to see if the information helps: HP Notebook PCs - Touch Screen Issues (Windows 8) Please post back with the results.  It is possible that the Touch Screen may not be supported for Windows 7 on that particular notebook. Please let me know if this information helps you resolve the issue by marking this post as "Accept as Solution", this will help others easily find the information they may be looking for.  Also, clicking the Thumbs up below is a great way to say thanks! Have a great day!

Check the Touch funtionality in OKR environment.
Turn off the computer and Turn it back on and right away start tapping F2.
Select Recovery. Once in the Recovery screen Test the touchscreen by touching any of the option if it will respond.

If the touchscreen works in OKR Environment, I suggest you perform a One key recovery (expect dataloss).
If the touchscreen still did not work in OKR Environment, I suggest you call Lenovo Technical Team for assistance.

I've accidentaly dropped my backpack, while the laptop was in it and cracked it's screen so I need to replace it. Is it possible?I've read that whether screen you are changing, its working depends on the quantity of pins on the Video signal connector.

I don't like to say it, but it sounds like the graphics card is dead. I had the same issue on an old 8800gts, it would work until I installed the drivers, then I would get very bad artifacts/lines down the screen.
I tried it on 2 different PC's with the same end result once the drivers were installed.

Have you tried putting the removed drive back in?

It looks like a video card problem (hardware) to me - but it shouldn't be that because you're able to use the USB Startup Repair functions (am I right in this assumption?). That means (to me) that it's likely to be a video driver problem (?).

Can you attempt to boot into Safe Mode? If so, what happens?
Does the screen problem show up after POST is completed? If so, at what point does it show up?

Hey all, I woke up this morning and started using my computer to find that there were white spots on my computer screen that I had not previously noticed. I have had the computer for two years and haven't had any similar issues. There does not appear to be anything wrong with the pixels, as the color changes appropriately - it's just brighter. Furthermore, the bright spots on the screen heat up much more than the rest of the screen, which remains cool. I also noticed that, though this may be a separate issue, the touch screen isn't responding. Here is an image (it's much more noticeable on a white background):   Any help is much appreciated!

any suggestions as to what this might be?? should i try unistalling it then reistalling??

maybe its your monitor. could be the monitor doesnt properly support the resolution / refresh rate youre running it at. like, i had this dell 17" CRT that said it would run on 1280 x 1024. but it got distorted at that resolution. so my suggestion is you try reducing the resolution a notch or two. plus check the refresh rate. maybe your monitors dying...

Now I dont know if you can see them but there are little green lines in the bottom left corner. my friend says he cant see them in on the screenshots so maybe only i can see them, i just hope u know what im talking about.

Any idea on how to fix this?

A:Little Lines on my Screen

Hi soulja,

First, this may be a monitor problem (one of my monitors has a white line that goes across the top)

I can't see any gray lines in your photo, but then again, the resolution is a lot lower than your screen's.

Take a screenshot of your screen, copy it into paint, and hit Ctrl+PageDown. Scroll to the bottom left corner. If you see these lines huge and magnified, then it's an XP problem. If not, it's a monitor problem.

A:Lines across screen

Hello Sharon, welcome to Bleeping Computer!

When you say you've updated your graphics card, does that mean you've removed the existing card and fitted another? If so I'd suggest first to try the monitor on another computer, in case the flashing is being caused within the monitor or connecting cable.

All of a sudden tonite I have lines cascading down the screen. Very faint hint of white lines. almost like the old days with tvs and the horizontal hold being out of wack except this is very faint and the screen itself is not distorted. Just horizontal white lines that cascade down. Did the obligiatory check of the cables from the printer to the computer and nothing going on there. tried rebooting and no luck I could make some guesses but if this is obvious to somebody i would appreciate any ideas.

now for some strange reason after posting this i turned of the monitor and turned it back on and the lines are gone???

My new one, seems to have these random screen spasms where a line will split across the screen like a cracked windshield, only for a split second but it is very repetative and will not go away. Any help would be great, I am not good with computers so please, break it down to stupid level for me.

Dell Inspiron E1505 Intel core Duo Processor T2050 Windows XP

I read a number of posts about what seems to be similar to my problem. Screen gets lines through it, seems like a connection problem in the hinges. Sometime depending on how I tilt the screen or if I leave it open in one position, it will work fine.

There was a site for a Toshiba, is there a site for Dell that will show me how to check connections? As a novice is this something I should even attempt myself?

Is there anything else I could/should check? Could it be a driver? How would I check that? Computer is about 3 years old, and I really hate to spend big bucks to get it fixed.
Sure appreciate any help!!

ok checking your cables is no big deal, just go ahead and unscrew the monitor (screen) cable and screw it back in. some times its just a matter of a lose cable.

My fiancee is using Windows Vista on a Dell Dimension C521 that's a year old. When he turns the computer on, the entire screen has horizontal and vertical lines (mostly green) running through it. You can barely see where to enter the password but are able to do so. When we tried to go back to a restore point it said Windows was unable to shut down entirely and the restore point doesn't take away the problem. Any suggestions? Thanks in advance.

Hi -

Have you tried checking the very back of your monitors cord and checking for marks or possibly defects? Have you tried another monitor - or tried your current monitor on the Dell on another computer?

Have you tried doing a hardware diagnostics test?

Last night I was on my daughters laptop trying to install family security.
I went to the windows security centre and was told that I would need to install family protection in order for me to restrict the sites my daughter views. I clicked download.
I then got a message that said windows has experienced a problem and needs to shut down.
I tried to restart but the only thing I get are green and grey lines on a blue background. There is no start menu or cursor.
I tried pressing ctrl alt del. when I do this the lines fade and I am left with a dark backgrount with 1 vertical white line.
I have tried the escape as well as f2 and f5 but nothing.
My young daughter is crying as I have broken her computer.

Just lines and the square mouse that moves is all i see...

I have taken the video card out and made sure it was inserted good, and checked all the connections.

This seems like a graphics card problem; whether it is fixable or not is uncertain at this point.

Could you try a different video card in the system? Perhaps borrow one from a friend, or steal one from a different computer.

It might be the graphic card it seems that those vertical red lines are artifacts or it could be software related to the graphic card, I just had a similar issue but the red lines where horizontal. But mine was way worst it would shut down and show a blue screen telling me and error that points to the graphic card.

Try reinstalling the software for your graphic card, see how that works.

Have you heard weird noises of the fan before that?
By the way how old is your graphic card, wich type of graphic card and how do you use it. ?

Since yesterday I have been seeing white lines across the screen of my laptop. I have a Sony Vaio CR120E early 2008 model. The white lines/band running horizontally across the screen is not permanent, and goes off if point pressure is applied from the top coverside of the screen, or on the face of the screen.

I did , open my laptop monitor and checked the data connection to the screen and the power supply, and they both look ok, although still on applying pressure the white lines go on and off.

Now I am not sure, it is an issue with the ribbon of my monitor or whole LCD monitor. Do note, that the lcd monitor do works fine sometimes. Please advise.

A:lines on laptop screen

It is most likely one of two things:

1.) Bad video card

2.) Driver issues

Try running the laptop in "Safe Mode", if there are lines down the screen the problem is most likely the video card going bad.

Next, try connecting the laptop to an external monitor to see if the problem remains.

I don't know where to post this question, so started here.

Horizontal lines have started appearing on our Toshiba laptop (about four (4) years old). They start by shading (screen can still be seen through the lines, but very faintly) about one-quarter of the bottom of the screen and move slowly up until the screen is nearly covered.

Have tried everything including a complete hard drive erase and rewrite - nothing has worked.

Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thank you.

I've run multiple stress tests on the card and it never errors out. Also i've swapped every other part in my computer with spare parts. (CPU, RAM, Monitor) I'm at an crossroad here. Is my video card dying/faulty. Or is the power supply dying?

Hi everyone,
So here?s my problem...
I have been using a Viewsonic E90f+ 19" CRT for about a year now. I recently purchased a Viewsonic a G220fB 21" CRT from a private seller. A few days later I noticed lines on both the monitors (single or dual display, doesn't matter). These horizontal lines start straight on the edges and seem to converge to a point. I have tried these monitors on other computers and the lines still appear. I have also noticed that these lines aren't visible or noticeable during boot up or login. My video card is an ATI X700 if it matters. It seems really strange that both monitors have this problem since they both were purchased at different times. Anyone out there have any idea what?s going on?

A:Pc Crash With Lines On Screen

If your not finding any malware the symptoms you describe could be due to hardware or overheating problems caused by a failed processor fan, bad memory (RAM), failing power supply, CPU overheating, motherboard, drivers, etc. If thats the case then reinstalling Windows will not resolve the issue. When was the last time you cleaned the inside of your computer? Open your machine and make sure the fans are working and the heat sink on the processor is not blocked with dust or debris. Remove the CPU's cooling unit and clean the fins on the heat sink that sits under the CPU with a can of compressed air. Dust restricts the airflow and prevents proper cooling. You can also remove the cards, RAM modules, clean and reseat them. Check your connections and fans to make sure they are working properly and monitor the temperature. If the computer is overheating, it usually begins to restart on a more regular basis. In Windows XP, the default setting is for the computer to reboot automatically when a fatal error occurs. If that fatal error only occurs when you're shutting down, the system reboots automatically and you should be able to see the error by looking in the Event Log. An alternative is to turn off the automatic reboot so you can actually see the error code when it happens. This is a Blue Screen of Death (BSOD). To change the recovery settings and disable automatic rebooting, do this: 1. Right-click on My Computer and select Properties > Advanced tab.2. Click the Advanced tab.3. Under "Startup and Recovery" click on the "Settings" button and go to "System failure".4. Make sure "Write an event to the system log" is checked and that "Automatically restart" is UNchecked.5. Click "OK" and reboot. Doing this won't cure your problem but instead of restarting you will get a blue diagnostic screen with information displayed that will allow you to better trace your problem.Download and run Motherboard Monitor 5. A:green lines on screen

Typically, solid lines that run through LCD screens is not good. It usually indicates that the screen itself is bad or (hopefully) one end of the cable has lost connection with one of the leads on the cable. For any of the TouchSmart computer, this involves a major service event - just to check the cable connection (to LVD1 or 2) on the motherboard.

A:Vertical lines on LCD screen

To check if the vertical lines on your screen is caused by a faulty LCD screen, try to access the bios and check if the vertical lines appear. If you see the vertical lines on the bios screen that means your LCD will need to be replaced. But if you did not see any lines then it is possible that your issue is with the video card. Try to reinstall the video card driver for your system and see if that will help.

A:Flashing Screen and Lines

Laptops are notorius for frying video chips. Can happen when you close the lid and the monitor and everything stays on, everything overheats and bingo - dead graphics chip on the mobo and possibly other hardware problems. Unfortunately this usually means replacing the mobo . Another possibility is a damaged cable where the lid hinges on to the body - this is usually a flexible ribbon cable that supplies the video signal to the monitor. This would be a much cheaper fix but probably the less likely cuprit.

Good luck, hope it is still under warranty. Anything that shows up before the operating system is almost certainly hardware related except for the odd BIOS problem/virus.

They mostly go away after logged in for a few minutes, and they usually go away if I run my thumb along the bottom bezzel piece. I can also create them by running said thumb along bottom bezzel piece. Does this sound like an issue with a faulty screen, or something else? Today when i turned on my computer i had much thicker and longer lines/artifacts that go down the length of the screen. When I open a game such as WoW, the artifacts get much more frequent and violent.

Ive tried changing resolution, refresh rates, drivers, reinstalling DX9, opening and cleaning my computer, reinserting video card with a different power cable, disabling fastwrite in display properties....

Im running out of things to do! Its a unusual problem because ive had this computer since last November and this is the first time these artifacts/lines are appearing. They appear even in the BIOS and windows loading screen, although its not as severe.

Finished playing Battlefield 2 online, logged off and got back into my desktop but I periodically get these vertical lines (about an inch thick running the full height of the screen) it's even doing it now as I type this.
I have a feeling that my graphics is to blame (it's getting on a bit) but I'm not sure.

The pc is only 3 months old so I can't see it being that, the graphics card is about 1.5 - 2 years old which I took from my old pc and put into this new one.

I've rebooted a few times but I'm still getting this happening. So any ideas? Any help is appreciated. Thanks.

Here's my specs:

P4 3.2
1024 gigs of ram
250 gb hdd
Power color ati 9800 xt graphics card

Hello everyone, as the title suggests on my family computer, there are these lines on the screen. They change in colour as the computer boots up. It wasn't doing it a couple days ago, and it's not a faulty monitor because I changed that already. I'm thinking it could be the graphics card, or the power source not being able to supply enough power. It won't show anything past the windows loading screen (when the flag is waving and there's the loading bar) and it only shows green vertical lines. It shows white ones before this part, but green here. I will attach a couple of photo's taken of the screen. I took them with my cell phone camera so sorry for bad quality. It's an XP with a Intel celeron 2.33GHz processor with 2 GB's of RAM. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you in advance.

Hi I have just set up my old PC after not using it for awhile and the display is all messed up From boot-up there are lots of horizontal lines on the screen many with small gaps although the normal display is still visible behind the lines The problems is always there from boot-up onwards except if the screen is completely blank I ve changed the graphics card which fixed things for a while but then the problem returned I have also tried the monitor on a different PC on screen Lines boot after and it works okay and I ve reset CMOS so it looks like the Lines on screen after boot problem is the motherboard Does anyone know if Lines on screen after boot theres anything I can do Is the problem likely to effect both AGP and PCI cards or just AGP The computer isn t used for anything that requires decent graphics so I was thinking of getting an old PCI card but woudl like to know if it would work or whether I should just give up Thanks Doug nbsp

hey henry,

i recommend testing another spare monitor on your computer and see if its a monitor problem.

I recently had a virus on my computer, shortly after i noticed it green lines began appearing across my screen, because i could not remove the virus with my anti virus software and the fact that my computer kept crashing, i reformatted my hard drive. I hoped that the green lines and the crashes would stop afterwards but they havn't, i read on alot of forum posts that these things are due to a fried graphics card, but when i switch to the onboard graphics card the lines still remain.

Before i go out and buy a new graphics card i just want to know whether that is really the issue or if it is due to something else.

Try using your monitor on another system to check whether it's not causing the problem. If the monitor is fine then it should be related to the GPU. However, since you say that it's also happening with the onboard video, it does seem a little strange. Just ensure that your system temperatures are not too high.

The sites that are suggesting the card is faulty are likely right. This is one of the common symptoms, another cause can be heat or lack of power(ie. cheap power supply or failing power supply). Pop open the case and see if the issue gets any better. Or have the card tested in another computer.
