Preferred Solution: No Admin Access /Cannot change existing user accounts to admin account

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/directdownload.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I have changed the UAC in my (Admin) account to turn it off. I have accounts for 3 other people, regular user accounts.
On those regular accounts, if you try to start several of the games I have installed (LOTRO, Neverwinter, etc.) UAC stops the game from loading, asks if you will allow, then rejects it as you need to be logged in as ADMIN to give permission.

I checked UAC while logged into a regular account, and it is turned on (After I turned it off in ADMIN account). It will not let me change the setting, saying I need to be logged in as ADMIN.

Now, I am NOT going to give my 8 year old granddaughter ADMIN rights, so how do I turn off UAC in that account?

A:User Account Control will not change in non-admin accounts

Hello mac,

UAC settings can only be changed by an administrator. In addition, UAC settings are applied globally to all users on the PC.

User Account Control (UAC) - Change Settings in Windows 10

As a workaround, you could see if using the tutorial below to create an elevated shortcut that a standard user can use without getting a UAC prompt may help. However, this method does not always work for games.

Basically I have two admin accounts one of which belongs to another member of family and one which belongs to me. Heres the situation:

The person who owns the other Admin account is changing my accounts password (also an admin account). Surely there is some way to make it so that I can not have my account's password changed unless it is logged on to my actual account (so my account's password can only be changed if my account is logged on?)

Is there a way?

In urgent need of help!

Thanks!

A:Prevent Admin Accounts From Changing Other Admin Account Passwords In Xp!

Here's an article (for Win2K) that may help: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/309799But, IMO, the issue here is that the other person can't be trusted. In such a situation I'd suggest making the other account into a Standard User account - that way they won't be able to mess with your stuff, and they'll be reliant upon you for anything that requires administrative privileges.

Hi,
I am working on a 2012 ADDS based network and I have the following requirement.
I want to create a local administrator user account on the local domain computers (Win XP, 7 and 8) which will have full access on the PC but not the permission to edit other local administrator accounts.
Please advise how I can achieve this.

Thanks in advance,
Andreas

A:local admin account with no permit to edit other admin accounts

Local admin account by definition has access to everything and even if it doesn't it can take ownership and give itself the rights. In other words i am not sure that you can achieve what you
are trying to do.

I would suggest create a single shared local admin account and give it your desktop admins, change the password every 60-90 days to keep it more secure. This is common practice in many
organizations.

Hi,
I have a Windows 8.1 system on a lap top that was used by a former employee. Her name was still on user name and I couldn't change it without Admin privileges (otherwise was asking for a smart card). Found out how to get in to admin in safe mode with Net
User Admin yes- then discovered that the old log in and information / desk top is no longer available. The docs are under Users (old employee's name) in C drive, but the docs and settings no longer show up and the admin log in is the only one available - no
option to change users.
When I went in and said Net User Admin no - thinking if I disabled admin user it would go back to the old log in -  there was no log in available at all.

Help?

A:Unable to access user accounts as admin

Try this:

Open an Elevated Command Prompt
Enable the hidden Administrator account: Enter net user administrator /active:yes

Reboot and got to safe mode (press F8 during boot).
Login as Administrator (no password).

Open Control Panel, User Accounts.
Check you account and make sure it's still setup correctly.

It sounds like you have infected your machine with malware. It is highly inadvisable to use keygens.

I am the sole user of this computer.

The control panel tells me I am an administrator but when I go into my account it says I am a standard user and won't let me change it to Administrator.

I just want to manage my own computer and - for instance - delete files on a CD which has somehow become write protected.

I googled lusrmgr.msc but when I put it in run was told this version of Windows 10 didn't have those rights

thanks in advance

Trying to delete files on a CD? Surely you jest!!! A CD is a read only device, you can NOT delete anything off of a CD.
How did you install Windows 10 without making yourself the Administrator. I've installed W-10 at least a dozen times so far and I've always come up as the ONE and ONLY Administrator.
But still, I have to install and use "Grant Admin Full Control" to be able to 'Take Ownership' of certain files and folders.

okay freshly into win now having obtained a new hdd for my comp I have been running as the admin of my computer since accounts became an unavoidable thing barring the occasional frustration-induced blunder I tend to stay Properly Paranoid in my habits to make sure I have no problems but win doesn't think that I could ever be intelligent enough to have full rights on any account other than the built-in admin account which of course I'd want to avoid using outside emergencies that render other accounts damaged somehow so I'm looking to find out how to make another user account with FULL admin rights not just the constantly have to get permission stuff that a standard snort admin account has full rights that don't involve constantly having to run as administrator yes yes I've heard people trying to get me more paranoid so that I'd endure the added hassles all it does is make me more irate with the situation so if noone's willing to provide me with instruction on this it's probably best for the thread to be left to fall off the board

A:of win7, admin rights, admin accounts, and real admin accounts

I don't know what your problem is. To make another administrator account - Start - Control panel - User Account -
Manage another account - Create a new account - Give it a name - put a check mark for Administrator -
click - Create Account.

Hi

Ive stumbled across a problem that has been causing me grief for a few days now, every time I try to access my hard drive (C disk) it says, access is denied. Also, i cant edit permissions because I've lost admin rights. Ive tried many things including unlocking the system admin, this lets me access a few extra things like being able to use the sfc command in cmd, however, it doesn't allow me to access the C disk or change permission because it also has lost admin rights? I fear that this is a bad problem and I don't know how it happened. I have tried restoring to a previous date and that doesn't work either.

Any help and/or advice would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks, Shimin4tor

A:Hidden Admin Account Access Transfer to User...

Hello Skeet, and welcome to Eight Forums.

Just to note, that while signed in to the built-in elevated "Administrator" account, Store apps will not work.

Your other files are not missing, but just in the other account's "C:\Users\(user-name)" folder instead. Since the built-in Administrator is a separate account, it will have it's own "C:\Uses\Administrator" folder and settings.

If you like you could just include the other account's folders into the Administrator's libraries.

Hope this helps,

I'm going to let a technician have my Windows 7 64bit PC in order to do clone the HDD to a SSD and then replace the HDD with the SSD. I think the techn wants an admin level account. I am concerned that (s)he not gain access to confidential files etc that would be available to me were I logged in. Is there a way to let the tech have admin access (s)he wants w/o having to be concerned about the privacy of the info on it? Can you create an admin level account which deprives its user from gaining access to files on a certain directory under c:\users

A:granting another user access to an account with 'admin' privileges

Acerman why don't you clone the drive yourself it is really not that hard with Macrium Macrium Reflect FREE Edition - Information and download

See my pic it shows the process but remember the drive you clone to has to be as large or larger than the drive you are cloning from.

There is a way of dragging and dropping the partitions into a smaller drive but it is not reliable enough for me.

The alternative is to image your drive slip a new one in - install the system using this
Clean Reinstall - Factory OEM Windows 7 and then use the image to get back your data. As you seem to be concerned that you have data that you do not want to be copied or whatever. That is so easy if you know how and I can and I am not a techie so the shop bloke would be more than capable of doing that.

Hi,

I added a user to my XP Pro and then switched admin privileges. That didn't work out as well as I expected, as when logged in my original account, my files were "read only". I switched the admin privileges back, but two problems persist: 1. my files are still "read only" even when logged in as admin, and 2. I am unable to delete the new user account ("permission denied").

Thanks very much for helping me.

A:trouble with admin and user accounts

Hi .Just how did you go about switching admin privileges?FWIW: IMO, the read-only attribute really doesn't mean anything. If you check, you will find that any files on a CD/DVD are "read-only" and that makes sense, since the content of a CD/DVD cannot be modified while on the disk. But these files, when copied to a hard drive, may still reflect a "read-only" attribute...but they are indeed capable of being modified.Scroll down to Read-Only at http://www.pcguide.com/ref/hdd/file/fatAttributes-c.htmlIf you are referring to folders/files that fall into the Docs & Settings category...that may be a different issue, one which simply requires your taking ownership of the files/folders in question. How to take ownership of a file or folder in Windows XP - http://support.microsoft.com/kb/308421 Louis

Manage other account etc However when I click on any of these links nothing happens at all What could be the possible reason of this Window is updated I am able to do other stuff that only admin can do for example installing uninstalling software running system tools etc Moreover I am able to make changes to user accounts from Computer Management I look forward for your reply Regards P SOLUTION credit goes to medab Hello all after being suggested by medab I finally switched to Microsoft account from local account and now everything is working I again switched back to local account and tested everything is still working yet Please note that I installed a fresh copy of windows again and then created a microsoft account and created a local account then switched to local account You may NOT need to reinstall it Well I think this must be reported to microsoft guys but before that try to test this on your machine Procedure to get this problem's situation is as below First make a fresh install of windows any edition When setup complete there is a step in which you are asked to make an account Don't select microsoft account instead select Local account Let the setup complete Now when you are all done just log into your local account and try to see if you get the same problems that I mentioned above If yes then it should be reported to windows team

No. When you install an AV program, it's for the whole PC. Usually only administrators will be able to adjust the AV program's settings though.

Like the title says I mean WTF It was a custom that a so-called friend of the family conned my mother into buying at inflated prices I checked Told my mom not to trust him but she felt sorry for him because he just lost his job working for a company that make computers Loser actually has the balls to act like I am a idiot that don t know anything about computers speaking to me like I read two account admin CDs the can from not my from I accounts. but Guest XP other Home am a baby This isn t the only problem I have but most of the others are manageable I had to put in a new RAM chip because the one he place in was only had megs added a gig RAM chip from best buy and a new sound card because there was no sound card I can read CDs from my XP Home Guest account but not from the other two admin accounts. Anyways I can see the disk drive in I can read CDs from my XP Home Guest account but not from the other two admin accounts. my computer and it knows when there is a cd in there I have to manually access the files or exe for installing things like Microsoft Office in Guest it basically does not autorun when a cd is place in but I don t even get that in my admin accounts It either sits there doing nothing or it tells me to insert a cd when I try right clicking on the disk drive in the I can read CDs from my XP Home Guest account but not from the other two admin accounts. admin accounts EDIT I am pretty sure that this problem has something to do with the OS or at least part of the software because I have taken the drives out and placed them in another computer before Unfortunately the guy that made the thing refused to give me the OS installion disk Didn t bother to put a CD image on there either

Do the security programs updated and maintained separately? For instance, if I update, run, or use immunize feature in Spybot S &D in the admin. account, does that extend to the regular accounts as well? What about the opposite? If I use admin privileges in a user account to do the same, does that extend to other accounts as well or is it contained withing that account?

I am running Windows 7 64bit, 32GB Ram, Dual 10 core processors.

All accounts on the box will randomly get locked out. This lockout is occurring "at least on the surface" with no repeated log-on attempts or no repeated bad password entries. Simply press a keyboard or move the mouse to unlock the system, enter password and it says account is locked out. I attempt to switch users and it says that account is locked out also. Every user and Admin account on the box is locked.

This behavior is randomly happening. I have not been able to duplicate the problem.

Password complexity is enabled and it has a file the password is measured against
Number of bad retries attempted is set at 3
An administrator must unlocked the account once it is locked.

Again, this box is not a part of a Domain, thus no domain controller is controlling the user account.

Last night I created additional user accounts to allow someone else to use the computer without being able to access everything (limited). The first account i created would not let me make it limited...it was permanently check marked admin, so I had to create one more account that i could make limited. When all was done, I deleted the limited account but i was unable to delete the additional admin account. The problem I have is, where did my original admin desktop and all the files and settings go??!! I cannot find it and the items i had saved there. How can i get things back to the way they were??? It should still be there. I am assuming you were using the "Administrator" account?

To get to it, at the welcome screen do CTRL-ALT-DEL twice until a username/password box appears. Then Type in Administrator for username and then your password and hit OK. This should let you into your desktop.

I have created two new user accounts. The first I set up as a standard account, logged on, did a few things, then logged off, logged on as my administrator account and editted the account to be an administrator. When I log back on as this account, it appears that the user still does not have administrator privileges even though under the user it says "Administrator". For example, the UAC control does not appear when you click on "Change User Account Control Settings". Also, trying to install software where the installer asks for admin privileges fails. However, the second account created started as an adminstrator account and exhibits neither of these problems.

I just haven't seen anything in posts about this and wonder what the difference is and if there is anything that "second class" administrator user can do to become a "first class" administrator.

Does UAC control display a confirmation question? this is the case for administrator accounts
Does UAC control ask for username/password? This is the case for standard accounts
Change the account back (just for testing) to standard account. Does it ask for username/password when changing system settings?
system built-in admin account has admin rights always
manually made account with admin rights has only admin rights after you allow it in the UAC control popup.
manually made account without admin rights has only admin rights after you allow it in the UAC control popup (enter a admin's username and password).
That's how it should work

I am admin ( WIN 7 Pro 64 computer 4 years old): In admin user default account, any and ALL open, and .exe functions denied.

CMD right click 'run as admin' (net user admin etc.) has no effect. Checking all folders I show FULL permission. Right click 'run as admin' has no effect on any file.

Created new USER with ADMIN functions and all works in that account.

Q: How can I trouble shoot my normal ADMIN account (it has all of my 1000s of folders, programs etc.)
Q: Or how can I transfer all of my doc to my new user internally? (Without backup to external drive etc)

This happened after a Microsoft standard update weeks ago. I tried restore, but restore fails. By now I have done much on the computer and restore not an option.
I have not been able to open or run any program files.

Any help I would be grateful!

A:Admin User Error5. CMD solutions failed. New User with ADMIN works

Wow. 2 days and not a single suggestion or reply?

Is this a really a simple common error? Is that why no replies? Or is there no help for it?

I searched the forums for hours over 2 days reading multiple posts and possible solutions and came up empty. Nothing applicable to my situation.

I have tried:
1. System restore. It always fails, even in SAFE mode or REPAIR mode.
2. Run as administrator (Both from right click and from CMD)
3. Sharing all folders (Although this ADMIN account has all privileges/permissions as it is anyway)
This created a 2nd ADMIN account. Don't know why.
4. Reset all privileges back to default settings.

Have not tried to re-install windows as I don't have a copy of Win 7. Plus I would like to avoid the reality of reinstalling so many programs and files.

Right now when the Original Admin user tries to run a .exe, I get a "Setup was unable to create the directory "...etc..." Error 5 access denied.

Any suggestions would be appreciated. It would at least get me moving trying some things. Thank you.

Now we want to install another programme and we cannot do this without an administrator account.

Any suggestion how I either can reset the password of the administrator account or create an new account with administrator rights.

Although there may be techniques to recover a lost password it is forum policy that we do not discuss these here - your best bet would be to visit a local security specialist and get them to recover/reset it for you - and a change to the policy for the replacement admin may be a good idea, I always wrote a list of all passwords and stored it with the Managing Director and also in a fireproof safe

Hello Everyone I made a HUGE mistake today I was configuring puters at a time amp accidently made the only admin account into a limited account At first I swear I remember seeing the at least one other account that was an admin but I guess not The login screen is a bit wierd Account XP User Admin in as well Instead of it being the new xp screen with the users Admin User Account in XP icon it has the old version with the window asking for the username amp password I tried to enter the UN in that I thought I remember seeing amp a variety of possible passwords but nada My questions are is it possible to reverse the limited restrictions on the formerly admin account without any other admin account This seems unlikely but I guess there has to Admin User Account in XP be a way right GOD I hioe there is a way If there really is another admin account it seems unlikely that windows would allow the only account to be changed to limited access then how can I recoup the forgotten password I didnt make a passwords disks I am in a super jam here folx so if any mad scientist out there can help mw out I would forever be greatful Thanks in advance peace rusia nbsp

Prior to setting up a laptop as a 'family' unit with 3 different User accounts, I (administrator) installed programs which allowed access by 'all users of the computer'.

I have the 'Adminstrator' privileges.
The other 3 User accounts have been assigned 'Limited' accounts.

How do I 'take back' control of specific programs that I dont want the 'limiteds' to mess around with.

Hope I am being clear in what I would like to implement?

A:Changing user accounts access to existing programs

There is a program included within XP that allows very detailed control of users, though I'm not 100% its on XP Home, I have XP MCE, which is based on Pro... Type "gpedit.msc" into "Run." The Group Policy config utility should come up. If it does, do the following:

Expand "User Configuration" in the tree on the left, then expand "Administrative Templates" and click on "System." This should bring up a list on the right of settings. Among these you should be able to find "Don't Run Specified Windows Applications."

Once you have found that, double click on it. Then select the "Enable" radio button. This will allow you to click the "Show" button in the box below it. Click on the "Show" button. Then click "Add" on the right. Type in the name of the program, such as "WinWord.exe". Click OK and then apply. Repeat for more than one program. If this is done correctly, it should bring up an error of "This operation has been cancelled due to restrictions in effect on this computer. Please contact your system administrator" when someone tries to run said program. This restricts the program on the account that it is done on, but I haven't tested it on a multiple user PC as I don't have one so if it doesn't suit you don't do it =P.

P.S. If someone knows a reason why this idea could cause problems, that I do not know of, pipe up! :)

Recently I did a clean install from the windows installation tool off a CD I made. Soon after logging on and making my first account (again!) I couldn't open the C drive. I messed with the owner options and made my account the owner so I could open it. Possibly before or maybe after (I'm not sure) I realised I wasn't able to use any admin settings, (like add another account or see advanced system settings) open any applications that required admin rights (like CMD or any installation file) or do anything in the system menu. I've tried to look up the solution but can't find anything that fits the description of my problem. Any help is welcome. Thanks in advance for at least reading this.

A:Transferring Standard (Admin) Account to Hidden Admin?

Hello milw0rm, and welcome to Eight Forums.

You could use the tutorial below to elevate your standard administrator account to have the same elevated rights as the built-in elevated Administrator account.

Be warned though, that all Metro Store apps and the Store will not work in an elevated account.

Using Win 8.1

First off, the account I'am signed on with is listed as admin type account. It's the one I had to enter my windows account email.
Since installing the new MalwareBytes 2.0 program (which went in without any problem) it put an shortcut icon on desktop. I tried too move the icon from desktop to another folder and it said I needed admin rights to do this. Usually once I click on continue it gives me access and proceeds to carry out the command.
So I followed the tutorial to build hidden admin account. I type in: net user administrator /active:yes, it completed. I signed on to the admin account and tried the same operation and it still asked for admin rights.
What am I doing wrong?

UpDate: MalwareBytes 2.0 has a self protection ability that needs to not be enabled, otherwise everything associated with the Program including program icons located anywhere cannot be moved.

I want to change my first account from admin to standard, but you need to have atleast 1 admin account on available at the time, so since it was my only account, I made another and made that admin too, the I changed my first created account to standard. However! The first account can freely go from standard back to admin by itself...is there a way to stop this?

The Daughter is 12 years old now and needs to have her own desktop (space) and such so I created another account for her with no password required.

I noticed when I mouse hover on her icons they display empty "Check Boxes". What is this for?

Also, I run two displays.
In my account the start button displays the start menu in the same display (right side) as the button & task bar.
In her account it displays to the left display on it's right edge.

any answers on the above or any other tips would be great.

I looked at the tutorials but no lessons on what an administrator can do in the other accounts. Some newb account creations tips would be nice. Or a link to it .......?

A:Non Admin User Account Questions

Hello theRock,

The check boxes are to make selecting multiple files easier to do. You can turn this off or on if you like though.

Select Files using Check Boxes

It sounds like the menu open appearance setting has been changed. This can show you how to change it back to the default "Left Handed" setting instead.

If you wanted to restrict what she can do, then you might consider making her account a standard account instead and using Parental Controls on it.

Hope this helps,

After pressing the icon and xp login plays the tune, all that i am greeted with is a blank blue screen. I accessed task manager and logged off. Logged in my admin account and deleted the new account and created another, the same thing happened again, and again etc.
So cannot create a new account , anyone know why?

Your brother has admin rights
You are standard user.

You wanna have admin rights?? If so, ask your brother to login and he can give you admin rights

Account was active (and I wasn't paying great attention) and set the admin. account almost fully to what and how I wanted it to be, not realizing that it was the admn. and not my user acct. that I named my own name, as the standard recommendation of not logging or using the admn. acccount as your logon or user acct. Is there a way I can trick or copy the admn. to my name or delete the user acct. in its sub or alternate, such as the acct.-my name and then use those settings as I was going to, and then rename admn. to other acct. if that makes sense(?) or would I just have to go ahead and bite-it and reset the same settings or the profile for my alternate-user acct.? Thanks, Joe

A:setting up Admin. and user account

There are registry changes you can make to trick xp to load other profiles, but imo it would be safest to leave the admin account as is, setup your user account and proceed as normal. I only use the reg changes if i join a pc to a domain that has a profile being used and they want that profile as the domain profile.

Hi guys, i have recently begun to use a user account instead of running full Admin and my question is should the two separate accounts be treated separately when it comes to security,  and do most keep one account minimal with just a few programs or to just surf and the elevated one for something else.

I am the only user  but am confused about security.  I started with just an admin account and kept everything up to date and ran scans regularly etc... but i am finding i'm doing the exact same thing with the user account.

When i update one and run scans i should automatically do the same for the admin account?  Windows update for example, i need to check for updates with both accounts?

Sorry for the confusion and thanks

A:User/Admin account question

Hi,

1. Click the Windows Start button and then click Control Panel. The Control Panel appears.
2. Select Large icons on the right-hand side under the View by menu (if you are not already in Large icons view). This will display the Control Panel features as icons. Locate and click on  User Accounts.
3. The User Accounts panel appears
4. Click the Change User Accounts Control Settings option. The User Accounts Control Settings dialog box appears.
5. Windows 7 UAC settings have a slider to change between different notification levels. You can choose one from the following four options:
Never notify
Notify me only when programs try to make changes to my computer (do not dim my desktop)
Notify me only when programs try to make changes to my computer
Always notify
6. If the need arises to turn off the UAC to troubleshoot ACT! related issues, a general guideline is to change the setting to Never Notify, which essentially disables the UAC feature.
Note: A reboot of the computer will be required after choosing this setting.
You  can also change a user's account type, Follow these steps:
If your computer is in a domain:
1. Open User Accounts by clicking the Start button , clicking Control Panel, clicking User Accounts, clicking User Accounts again, and then clicking Manage User Accounts.  If you're prompted for an administrator password or confirmation, type the password or provide confirmation.
2. On the Users tab, under Users for this computer, click the user account name, and then click Properties.
3. On the Group Membership tab, click the group you want the account to be in, click OK, and then click OK again.

If your computer is in a workgroup:

1. Open User Accounts by clicking the Start button , clicking Control Panel, clicking User Accounts and Family Safety, clicking User Accounts, and then clicking Manage another account.  If you're prompted for an administrator password or confirmation, type the password or provide confirmation.
2. Click the account you want to change, and then click Change the account type.
3. Select the account type you want, and then click Change Account Type.

A:user profile - no admin account

Restart the machine in the "Safe mode"
Use the "Administrator" account and password if you set one up. If you did NOT set up a password, then just use the "enter" key when in the password box.
Once up and running in the safe mode, you should be able to make a new account of the admin group.

Until recently, I was using an Admin privileged user account on my Windows 10 PC for all use. I now use a non-admin account for all use and have 2 Admin privileged accounts in back. One Admin account I use to authorize anything requiring admin privileges and the other I don't touch I just have as a back up restore point.
My question is if I should disable internet on the Admin account that acts simply as my restore point? Is there a security benefit to doing this or could it be a security risk due to not getting auto updates?

A:Securing my Admin user account

The extra admin account is unnecessary since it does not serve the purpose for which you intended, i.e. as a restore point.  One admin account and one standard account should be sufficient.

Also, the "internet" or a network connection does not work in the way you describe.  Disabling the wireless connection on one account disables it for all accounts on that machine.  You cannot selectively turn on the wireless for one account and not for others.  The same goes if you are using a wired connection.

I am assuming that you mean Windows updates, which are updates to the operating system.  Once the operating system is receiving updates, those updates apply to all users on the same machine.  The operating system is central to all users.  Although individual users may apply their own settings (e.g. wallpaper) or install applications for their sole use, those things do not affect the operating system as a whole.

A:why is my guest account the only admin user?

Which version of Windows 7?

I don't think the Guest account can have administrator rights, be an administrator. The actual Administrator account is hidden by default. You need at least one User set with administrative rights, shows as Administrator but others can be Standard users.

Ok, I may have made a mistake here, I was told to click this SID thing and change my SID I code in order to be able to install this WindowBlinds application however, it seems to have gone crazy.

After restarting my computer, It now has two users after looking in the C:/users - one Gareth.GarethPC which has NOTHING IN IT. And the other is my original GARETH account which it wont let me access - asking for an ADMIN password however It wont let me type anything in!

So I can't do any activity that requires Admin access, i've been trying to system restore naturally Admin required.

Any help? I'm wetting myself.

I Admin please access accounts control can't - help! panel have two user accounts on Vista Home Pro One is a standard limited user account password protected and the other is my admin account obviously with admin privileges and password protected I am not sure when this started happening but I am unable to launch Admin accounts can't access control panel - please help! control panel under my admin account I get a pop-up of quot Windows cannot access the specified device path or file You may not have the appropriate permissions to access the item quot The title bar of this pop-up has quot EE -A A- D - -BEB C quot I can only get to CP from my limited account Then I am prompted to enter the Admin account s password At times even trying this fails with the same error the first time I try to launch CP Usually the second or third time I launch CP it will actually launch Someone suggested I set up a new admin account and then from that account rename the original Admin account s profile so that Windows would rebuild it upon reboot Well I did manage to create a new admin account using admin privileges from my limited account but even that new admin account can t launch control panel Interestingly after I set up the second admin account when I try an admin cp function from my limited account it does correctly show me a pop-up showing me two admin users to choose for entering the admin password So it does know the two users as admin accounts I am at a loss as to what to do try Is there a way to repair the OS using the original DVD I didn t see any applicable repair options Any help is appreciated Thanks Walter nbsp

Hi
I need to either change a guest log in (kid's access) to
adminstrator, or a way to reveal or change the password
for the Admin profile. Thanks for your help.
I tried this already: Run: cmd net user guest *
I tried to rest the guest password this way but
it didn't work - I'm thinking it is because I am not
logged on as admin in the first place. What do I do now?
Thx
lrr

A:change guest login to admin or figure out admin password

you cant change an admins pw from a guest account....at all

only way to change the admin pw is to boot to safe mode and enter the sys admin account or use a hacking program iso which you can find easily but use at your own risk....

My ex set up my notebook for me which runs windows 7. He set himself as the administrator and me as a standard user. As he's no longer about how do I switch me to admin instead of him? And no he won't give me his password to do it (I've asked)

A:How do I change admin user?

Hello Princess, and welcome to Seven Forums.

Given your situation, I would recommend to reinstall Windows 7 by doing a factory recovery/restore since it's a notebook. This will give you a fresh start again.

Hello creativex, and welcome to Ten Forums.

If you meant for how to convert your added account to be a "standard user" account instead of an "administrator" type account, then the tutorial below can help show you how to.

I'm not sure if this is in the right forum, or even if this is possible, but...

Is there any possible way to make it so that my normal account can be transformed into an administrator account?

In order to make one of my games function properly, I need to enter the task manager and set the affinity so that the game uses 1 core to operate. In order to do this, I have to run the application, switch user accounts (from mine to the admin), set the affinity there, then switch back.

It gives me no option to apply administrative settings when I try to set the affinity on my main account, it just tells me I can't.

Any help would be great, thanks!

Hi ans welcome to seven forums

Why not either run as admin all the time, or Run with elevated rughts? There is even a tutorial on how to run elevated rights in the tutorial section here on SF

I have a friend who keeps getting borderline malware (e.g. browser toolbars) installed on his computer. He has no idea how it happens. There is even an active antivirus on his pc (I believe norton). It comes with his new pc and is valid for 1 year.

After I clean his pc, if I change his account type from administrator to limited user, it should prevent any toolbars from installing, right?

Would this break any software or cause any file to become inaccessible?

A:Safe to change from admin to limited account?

Apologies if this is really obvious to you... but the consequences of getting this wrong are very troublesome to say the least so I'll say it anyway just on the 0.1% chance you didn't know it...

You must always have at least one Administrator-level account active and working on a PC at all times.

Otherwise you'll be locked out of being able to do anything at Admin-level and sooner or later this will be a big problem.

As an example you have to be careful to do things in the right order; for instance you can't change the only account to Limited and then add an Administrator account later; by then it's too late and you're locked out of Admin-level access.

Warning out the way, I'm not totally sure whether it would stop toolbars.

I generally use my machine as a Standard Level account and for instance I can update Firefox to a whole new version and add something like Adblock Plus without being asked for an Admin password, so I guess a malicious browser add-on may be able to get installed too. But running as Standard user does give some protection.

Also there are times when your friend might need admin rights. For instance if he uses Java (not Javascript but Java) then (a) I'd recommend getting rid of it, but (b) if there's some reason why he absolutely must use it, I think you may have to be logged on as Administrator to update it. (And be careful not to just click on defaults but to untick the Ask toolbar or whatever foist-ware it tries to install.) And since Java is a problematical piece of software that's often being targetted by the bad guys, you really want him to be able to keep it updated as soon as possible.

I'd recommend giving your friend 2 accounts, one standard one to use day-to-day and another Admin-level account for the times when he must log on as Admin - tell him to ring you when that happens perhaps.

I don't know what happens if you try to convert an existing account from Admin-level to Standard. My hunch is it should work but it's always possible that some software app won't play ball.

My Windows machine has only one interactive account - the built-in quot administrator quot account It is just an internal file- and media-server without a monitor which is accessed exclusively through Remote Desktop I would like to change the quot user picture quot associated with that built-in admin How admin change the built-in to picture the for account? account Trying to do it the quot usual How to change the picture for the built-in admin account? quot way - through Control Panel - gt User Accounts - does not work Apparently user picture selection is handled by a Metro app And Metro apps are not launchable How to change the picture for the built-in admin account? from the built-in admin Most likely there are workarounds I can try using that hack that enables Metro apps under the built-in admin Or I can add another interactive admin account and try changing the picture of the built-in admin from that other admin I don't know whether any of these will work I haven't tried yet But is there a more straightforward way to set the user picture for an account Like copy the picture file to some folder or something like that

A:How to change the picture for the built-in admin account?

Best practice is to not use the built in Administrator account for general use. Create an admin level account for daily use and leave the built in account for emergencies. If you have only one account and for some reason you cannot log into it you will have no access, no easy way to solve the problem. Having an alternate account makes this much easier.

I'm having some issues with a child accessing inappropriate material on a PC in our home. All of the PC's were originally setup with only Admin accounts (no user accounts).

I want to setup new user accounts and would like to copy the admin desktop and any programs on the Admin account to new user accounts. (Games, educational programs, etc.)

My goal is to lock down the PC's so only an admin (and not) a 'user' can make changes (add software, make dns changes, etc.). (I will be changing the Admin Password)

Any advice to direction to previous posts or other resources on how to do this is appreciated.

A:Copy admin desktop to new user account

From an Administrator User account you can create Standard User accounts. Standard User accounts are severely restricted in what they can do. Programs that have been installed by an Administrator User account will be usable by the Standard accounts unless they were installed "for this account only."

From the Administrator User account you should be able to copy stuff to the Standard User desktops.

I just reformatted my pc and reinstalled a new OS. Anyways in my old OS I had somehow managed to active admin account/rights. I remember doing this because I was installing a theme and had to mess around with .dll files in windows folders.

Anyways the reason I want to get the admin account back is to do the same thing and also I dislike having to click on show processors from all users in task manager..

My question is how to active the admin account which lets me do all of this.. And then get rid of the default user account so I don't need have to select between admin and user when I turn on my computer all the time..

Hope my question was clear.

A:Creating a Admin account and getting my default user.

Hello Ringo,

If you like, the tutorial below will help show you how to enable the built-in elevated "Administrator" account that you can use when you need full rights and access to the PC.

Built-in Administrator Account - Enable or Disable

The tutorial below is for an elevated Task Manager shortcut that'll open Task Manager with "Show processes from all users" already clicked on.

Task Manager - Create Elevated Shortcut

Next, you can use the tutorial below to set Windows to automatically log on to a user account of your choice at startup.

Log On Automatically at Startup

Hope this helps,
Shawn
