Hi, I updated my X1 Carbon 4th gen to 1.17 BIOS, and since then, opening the lid won't wake the computer from hibernation, except when plugged.Bios changelog states Disabled the power button when the computer is in battery mode and the
computer lid is closedbut when I read "power button", I don't think "this is gonna break the behavior of the lid". And of course, no rollback is possible from 1.17, so I'm stuck with a computer wich won't wake from hibernation correctly. I just can advise you all to not upgrade bios, and see what's inside the next version...
I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.
I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.
You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/directdownload.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hi, I have x1 carbon 20FB and I have Synoptics WBDI bio scanner. Device is working fine when I try to use scanner to log in to the computer. I'm interested in ability of using the scanner to store other passwords from secured web sites utilizing the scanner. Is it possible? If so - what do I need? I recently got a X1 carbon 4th gen (20FB), and I have been super happy with its performance. However, it seems like whenever I have the laptop closed, the keyboard is leaving a mark on the screen. I sent it to repair, and they changed the screen, but that didn't seem to fix it. I noticed that the body and the lid are not perfectly aligned - one of the corners of the lid seems to be jutting out a little bit with respect to the rest of the body. I've attached picture to show this. I'm not sure if this is a part of the general design of the Carbon. Can anyone with a X1 carbon 4th gen confirm that this alignment feature is not present in their machine? Thank you ?https://forums.lenovo.com/t5/ThinkPad-X-Series-Laptops/X1-carbon-4th-gen-20FB-lid-and-body-alignment/td-p/3441108
Hi, We are having an issue with our X1 Carbon's(20FB). The audio output via an HDMI cable works, we see the Epson speakers in the playback devices. After the user is logged on for a while, the speakers will no longer showup in the playback devices and the auidio will just come through the laptops speakers. After we restart the computer, the audio will again work and play to the speakers. Windows 7 X64 Any help or thoughts on this is greatly appreciated. Hi, does anyone know if there is a list of compatible embedded LTE chips that will work on a X1 Carbon 20FB? The reason why I ask this is bec the current model, EM7455, only operates at some frequencies that some abroad contries do not support and the older models such as the EM7355 support those frequencies. One being GSM. I tired to install a EM7355 into my 20FB laptop but the bios isn't allowing it. Thanks!
EM7455 is versatile enough and supports a lot of 4G/LTE including LTE-A and 3G bands worldwide. It does not support 2G (GPRS/EDGE) access technology.

Hello all, We've got the same problem here with our x1 Carbon 4th gen (20FB). Lucky, we just purchased 2 but not 2 dozen. Both of them have the same problem which same as Swhitcher. We've called the Lenovo support hotline and ask for the onsite support. The on-site engineer replaced the mother board for us, but after 1 hour, problem occur again. We're going to deploy those computers to the end user very soon.So please, give us the solution as soon as you can, Lenovo! Many Thanks! Hi, I've got an X1 Carbon 20FB (4th gen), and noticed it doesn't have Lenovo System Update on it, which I've found useful in the past. So I went to the Lenovo downloads site and found System Update, but it doesn't list the 20FB as one of the X1 Carbons it supports - it only goes up to 20BS, 20BT: http://support.lenovo.com/se/en/products/laptops-and-netbooks/thinkpad-x-series-laptops/thinkpad-x1-... (See the "Note for ThinkPad X1 Carbon users") Should I avoid downloading System Update then? I've not noticed anything that's not functioning, but I figured it makes sense to keep things up to date from a security and features point of view. Why is it not included by default? Hi all, I have have new X1 Carbon and really like it. However I am getting regular BSOD failures once or twice per week. I am running Win7 Enterprise SP1 and have all the lastest Lenovo urgent updates installed and most of the recommended and optional updates installed too. The BSOD have been of the following types:KMODE_EXCEPTION_NOT_HANDLED (1e) on June 28thMEMORY_MANAGEMENT (1a) on June 30thBAD_POOL_CALLER (c2) on July 6thMEMORY_MANAGEMENT (1a) on July 7thDRIVER_CORRUPTED_EXPOOL (c5) on July 21st At first I thought it was faulty RAM so I ran MemTest (http://hcidesign.com/memtest) for over night for two nights in a row and no issues were detected. Has anyone encouneted this issue and know how to fix it? Any recommnedations from Lenovo? If required I can attached detailed log dmps. Thanks,Ian
Look in the event log to see if a driver is throwing an error before the BSODshttps://forums.lenovo.com/t5/ThinkPad-X-Series-Laptops/Frequent-BSOD-with-2016-X1-Carbon-20FB/td-p/3377470
Hi, trying to get a Windows 7 Install done on a Carbon X1 2016 20FB w/ Samsung950 Pro. Bios 1.14 (latest as of May 2016)Special issue is, I need to get it done in a Legacy mode (BIOS,MFT style). I was able to install Win7 based on a win7 image that got the 950pro drivers and the USB3 drivers infused through NTLITE, and then I build an image with Rufus 2.9 (both UEFI/GPT and UEFI/MFT) worked, with the X1 BIOS was set up to UEFI only with CSM.BUT I need to to run on the BIOS setting 'Legacy' and in MFT style, b'cause the special Win7 installer I need to use does not support anything else. I know, sounds weird, but..... . So- is there a fundamental limitation against booting / installing a Win7 on a Carbon X1 2016 20FB - Samsung950 Pro in Legacy 7 MFT mode?https://forums.lenovo.com/t5/ThinkPad-X-Series-Laptops/Carbon-X1-2016-20FB-Samsung950-Pro-Windows-7/td-p/3338627

Hello, I have this problem for month now :I close my X1 Carbon lid before going to bed, and in the morning, when I resume it from hibernation, the trackapd and trackpoint are totally unresponsive. Everything else work fine, I just have to wait, sometimes 20/30sec, sometimes a whole minute, to have the trackpad working. This is very frustrating to have a computer resuming so fast from hibernation but being unable to use it. I have the latest BIOS (1.15), latest UltraNav driver (126.96.36.199).Tried several drivers uninstallation/reinstallation, several fresh windows install, problem is still present. Actually on a fresh install of Windows 10 64bit (Anniversary update).https://forums.lenovo.com/t5/ThinkPad-X-Series-Laptops/X1-Carbon-2016-20FB-Ultranav-unresponsive-for-30sec-1Min-after/td-p/3386336
I recently reinstalled my windows 10 system and then can not find my wireless card. In the Device Manager, there is two hardware without drivers. 1) Network controller; 2) PCI simple Communications Controller.I went to the Lenovo support page and find out I need to install Huawei Huawei ME906s Wireless WAN Firmware Updater for Windows 10 and 8.1 - ThinkPad. However, I can not install this. It showed "Error code 10: Find port failed" Did I install a correct version. Or what kind of drivers I need to install for my wireless card. I'm setting up a new X1 Carbon with machine type 20FB. It came with a Samsung MZNTY256HDHP SSD. I noted there was a recent SSD firmware update package for this laptop model, so I downloaded and ran the updater. It reported there were no updates. However, after digging a bit deeper, I discovered that the SSD firmware updater for the X1 Carbon 20A7/20A8/etc. DOES have an update for the SSD in this machine. What is going on here? Does this firmware update somehow only apply when the SSD is installed in a 20A7? Or did this particular model of SSD just get missed when Lenovo was putting together the firmware update package for the 20FB?https://forums.lenovo.com/t5/ThinkPad-X-Series-Laptops/Missing-SSD-firmware-update-for-X1-Carbon-20FB/td-p/3485035

Hi, the power options sets that the display should turn off in X minutes. But it doesn't do it at all. Instead, the computer is locked and the display dimms. I'm pretty sure that I have installed the latest monitor and graphic card driver. For testing it, I have also unplugged all USB devices. What can still be the reason? Thanks!https://forums.lenovo.com/t5/ThinkPad-X-Series-Laptops/Thinkpad-X1-Carbon-2016-20FB-won-t-turn-off-display/td-p/3479770
Hi all, I have the X1 Carbon 2016 (20FB) and it is running Windows 10 Enterprise. I have all the lastest Windows and Lenovo updates. It all works pretty well except when it comes to starting back from sleep mode. I have the laptop configured to go to sleep when I close the lid. However when I reopen the lid, the power button and keyboard lights come on but the display stays off. Opening and closing the several times doesn't help. The only way to get the display to turn on is to quickly press the power button. This puts the laptop to sleep. If I press the power button again the laptop comes back to life and the display works again. Anyone else have this issue? Any possible solutions? Just got my brand new X1 Carbon (4gen 2016/20FB) with the 512 GB PCIe NVMe SSD (THNSN5512GPU7). Was expecting a blazing fast disk, but it felt sluggish something that AS SSD Benchmark confirms (see attachment). According to the specs this drive should offer up to 2400 Mb/s read and 1500 Mb/s write. But I get 1800 MB/s read and abysmal 113 MB/s write. The machine has all the latest updates from Lenovo (incl BIOS) and all the drivers for Windows 10. Anyone else tested their drives? Found a Dell XPS owner with the same drive that complained about the same issue. Turning off windows write cache buffer flushing does help, but that is not a good answer.

The small piece of plastic which seems to protect some pins in the centre of my is broke My - Carbon's port power to it us... X1 safe X Carbon's power port broke off and I'm worried about well what I should worry about For illustration the piece I'm talking about is the one in the middle of the port here http i imgur com FMrpSIo jpgI can push it back into the port temporarily as I've done for the photo but when I plug in my power cable then unplug My X1 Carbon's power port broke - is it safe to us... it it comes off in the tip of the power cable and I'm worried about losing it as I almost did today It looks like this http i imgur com anYfZA jpg when the plastic plug is removed and this http i imgur com CVwBbm jpg is what the bottom of the plug broken end looks like From these I'm guessing that it's there either to protect the pins from breaking prevent them from touching each other or both So my questions are twofold What's the danger here Is it just the pins breaking bending I'm not too concerned about this I always keep my laptop in a sleeve case or could something be shorted out my computer blow up if things go wrong and the pins touch Is it safe to continue using my computer Is there any way to fix this I can only think of trying to glue it back in but there are so many little pins around there I'm worried I'd mess something up doing so not to mention that the piece itself is tiny My laptop is out of warranty and while I'd be okay with paying to have the power port replaced looking at the hardware maintenance manual it seems like the entire system board would have to be replaced I don't know how much this would cost but I assume it'd be more than it's worth Solved Go to Solution
If you accidently short out the pins in there, you could blow fuses on the motherboard, that wouldn't be good. If you give me your model number, (not the serial number), I could probably provide a video of disassembly and installation of the port.'
Depending on the model, the port is separate from the motherboard, it's attached by a cable and a plug.
I manually put the system to sleep via the Start menu or whatever it's called now nbsp Usually when I come back and hit the power button it resumes just fine nbsp But it seems that every now and then it gets totally stuck wake X1 2015 Carbon won't sleep from nbsp The green light on the power button is blinking slowly but the machine won't respond at all nbsp I press the power button press the enter button do everything I can think of but it stays off nbsp This happens on battery X1 Carbon 2015 won't wake from sleep and on AC nbsp It's not X1 Carbon 2015 won't wake from sleep easily reproducible it's done it maybe two or three times in the past week that I've had it nbsp I'm looking for some pattern but haven't found it nbsp nbsp The only resolution I've found is to hold down the power button until I get full power off nbsp Then I can boot from scratch losing anything I had open at the X1 Carbon 2015 won't wake from sleep time of the sleep nbsp Any ideas
I've had this too...seems to me to be a Windows 8.1 issue. Frustrating, especially coming from a MacBook Air which is pretty flawless in the reliability, dependability and battery life department.

I had the same problem. If you have windows installed, do not shut it down normally, but make a hard reset (press for a few seconds the turn-on button). It looks like Windows Computer (WC) does not really shut down so you miss the chance of entering the BIOS.To me it works by then pressing the F1 button (without any extra Fn or Ctrl, etc..) a few times after pressing the turn-on button again (no need to press them at the same time).Btw., if you want to install GNU/Linux and boot from USB, you may need to change this in the BIOS: _security _disable secure boot, and_startup _UEFY legacy -> both My system: Win10 (now Debian), X1 4th generation, PCIe SSDhttps://forums.lenovo.com/t5/ThinkPad-X-Series-Laptops/X1-Carbon-will-not-boot-or-enter-BIOS/td-p/1218670

In an attempt to get Ubuntu to boot from an USB flash drive, I reset the BIOS by pressing F9 in the BIOS menu.Unfortunately, it seems to have reset the entire BIOS (instead of just the settings as I had hoped). Hello nbsp I have a ThinkPad X Carbon rd generation Two days ago I have updated the nbsp Carbon... ThinkPad Fan - Problem BIOS Update after X1 BIOS to the latest version nbsp The installation went well and I successfully booted into Windows with no Fan Problem after BIOS Update - ThinkPad X1 Carbon... issues However the fan was not working anymore I did not notice this until the laptop was extremely nbsp hot which is very unusual for this laptop under low medium load In particular nbsp I was just running a disk cleanup using the native Windows tool and after minutes I decided nbsp to kill the process this operation usually takes - minutes My Fan Problem after BIOS Update - ThinkPad X1 Carbon... feeling was that due to the temperature the cpu was in nbsp throttling At that moment I noticed that the fan was not active nbsp After a shutdown the fan was again working However I noticed that the fan nbsp kicks in much more often than it nbsp was used to For this reason I did two things - I have downgraded the BIOS to BIOS updated the CPU microcode I am not sure that the microcode was downgraded as well when I downgraded the BIOS nbsp - I have run the Intel Processor Diagnostic Tool Fan Problem after BIOS Update - ThinkPad X1 Carbon... I was afraid that the high temperatures may have damaged the cpu The tool reported that the maximum temperature of the cpu during the benchmark was always safely within the expected threshold and all the tests were passed nbsp Now I still can see that the fan kicks in much more often than usual I have noticed using sensors nbsp under nbsp Ubuntu that every time there is a very short burst peak of cpu usage e g I start Google Chrome and visit nbsp Gmail the sensors report a very high temperature nbsp but just for lt nbsp second e g from degrees to degrees and then soon goes nbsp back to degrees This is the reason why the fan kicks in it remains active for - minutes starting from a high RPM value and then going down as expected I don't think that the temperature actually reaches degrees I expect an immediate but small increase e g degrees of the temperature due to the burst but nothing like degrees nbsp I think that the sensors are nbsp returning junky values I never saw this temperature behaviour instant jump temperature degrees or more due to short bursts peaks before the BIOS update nbsp In my opinion the sensors are not returning stable values as before but they are very jumpy Few questions - Is there any bug report about BIOS update How can you explain the temporarely non working fan after the update I think this may be a serious concern - How can I debug my issue with the temperature sensors Is there any way to reset them Do you think this is a software or hardware problem - Do you think that the high temperature may have damaged the sensors nbsp nbsp Thank you Emilio nbsp
Laptop has got anti overheat thing so if temp rises over 100c it will automatically power off like if the battery was dead and that you unplugged it that sort of power off so temps you don't have to worry but as long laptop alone isn't idle at 80-90c then laptop needs clean out to fix it and if that won't fix it then it could be something elsehttps://forums.lenovo.com/t5/ThinkPad-X-Series-Laptops/Fan-Problem-after-BIOS-Update-ThinkPad-X1-Carbon-3rd-generation/td-p/3307720
On my old T420, I was able to set a HD password on my SSD in the BIOS so that if anyone ever stole my laptop and pulled the drive, they wouldn't be able to access the data without the password. I'd like to do the same with my X1 Carbon Gen 4 with 512GB Samsung 950pro NVMe HD. However, in the BIOS, I see no option to set a HD password. I can set a power on password, but I don't think this means the HD is encrypted. I assume anyone can pull the HD and read all the data.https://forums.lenovo.com/t5/ThinkPad-X-Series-Laptops/Setting-BIOS-HD-password-for-NVMe-on-X1-Carbon-Gen4/td-p/3437135
Asus p7p55-m mobo, windows 7 64bit:
I updated my BIOS to attempt to fix a video issue, as suggested by XFX. Now my onboard sound isn't outputting anything. Latest drivers installed, windows recognises card, BIOS has enabled onboard sound. Green bar shows in Windows volume control when I'm playing music, but no sound on speakers. Speakers work fine on a different input source.
Hello, I just recently performed the 26-Jul BIOS update to 1.14, for my Thinkpad Carbon X1 (20BS) with windows 10.The update went ok, but afterwards, Windows is crashing when booting. Using a bootable Windows 10 installation disk also crashes when booting. The recovery environment also crashes when booting. Using detailed logs, it seems to crash when activating the ACPI microcontroller. I would assume that has something to do with the UEFI update, that I have disabled in the BIOS. Enabling it does not recognise the disk, as it is not a GPT partition. I tried to rollback the BIOS, but it does not allow it. Do you have any suggestion on how to proceeed? Thanks,Pedrohttps://forums.lenovo.com/t5/ThinkPad-X-Series-Laptops/Thinkpad-Carbon-X1-20BS-Bios-update-windows-locked/td-p/3385126
Took my X1 Carbon on vacation with me in Thailand. Used it once. Tried to boot it the following morning and a message about something missing - in courier font without a screen driver. Now it will not boot even into just the bios. Press the power, and the power button lights up, the keyboard function selection is active and can be toggled through, the keyboard can backlight, but nothing else. Then a short time later it shuts down on its own. I have tried powering it on and using a paper clip to press the reset button. Any ideas?
Is your warranty still active? This would be a good time to use it.https://forums.lenovo.com/t5/ThinkPad-X-Series-Laptops/X1-Carbon-20A7-No-Bios-No-Boot-keyboard-lighted/td-p/3300128

In my BIOS I have an option that is under Power Management called Wake Up On Lan. What is it. I found it to be the reason my PC kept rebooting itself when I shut it down or plugged it in..
It's a feature that allows for your machine to be remotely powered on (through your NIC).
Inspiron 3847 desktop. I want WOL to work. In the BIOS it says Disabled. However it is also greyed out and I cannot move to enable.
Link light is NOT on when powered down.
Other network adapter settings via the OS are Enabled but the command does not work. (Will work with other PCs I have)
The online manual doesn't list BIOS screens so I can't see the options. I suppose it's just not available in this model and hence greyed out.
Is there an option for PXE or something else that needs to be enabled in order to make the WOL option available? Do you have to change some power settings in BIOS so that the network card isn't turned off?
You could try resetting BIOS to defaults to see if there's just an error that can be cleared:
Reboot and press F2 to open setup
Copy down all the current settings
Power off and unplug
Press/hold power button for ~15 sec
Open case and remove motherboard battery
Press/hold power button for ~30 sec
Reinstall battery (right-side-up!)
Reboot and press F2
See if WOL is available now
And if you experience any boot issues, make sure BIOS settings match what you copied
I am trying to setup up my home computer to work with WOL. I have selected the "Allow this device to being the computer out of standby" in the Device Manager under Network Adapters. After doing a google search, I have also discovered that I need to enable WOL in my computer BIOS settings. I have reached the BIOS settings, but I cannot find any selection to enable WOL. I think the computer is new enough (2 years old) to be WOL compatible, though. How do I turn it on in BIOS? There appears to be no manual for this motherboard, and there is nothing about it in the Dell XPS 400 Owner's Manual.

The system is a recent build, less than 2 months old, and the problem has occurred from the outset.
S3 is enabled in the bios, which is the original Award (F3); rev. F8 is available but one attempt to flash via the internet failed (this mobo does not support floppies) and I had to clear cmos and rebuild the raid array using Intel's Rapid Storage app to get the system to post again and regain access to the bios.
I've tried to make an emulation floppy bios cdrom to update the bios but the program I used (Bart's clean20, which everyone links to in this situation) failed to insert the actual bios file when running the iso build.
A further complication: the latest bsod has corrupted the bios again (it's a dual bios mobo) and I cannot access it at post but the OS will load. I'd also be extremely grateful for the procedure to update the bios and correct this problem in one fell swoop if it's at all possible to do so.

In short, quite the mess! I'd be extremely grateful for any help offered.
Hi and welcome to SF!
Why do not you use the Gigabyte @ bios?! It can be download here: @BIOS
It's very use to use, but read carefully the instructions. And here is your update bios: http://www.gigabyte.com/products/pro...=3655&dl=#bios
Good luck and let us know the results!
When I wake up from sleep, Windows 8 wakes up and opens up everything I had open but it's as though it's mimicking waking up from hibernate. When I wake up the PC I see the BIOS screen, followed by a black screen, then opens up Windows with my applications. It's not instant like my other PC with W7, especially considering I have an SSD.
Furthermore, I went to my BIOS and put the ACPI suspend type to S1 from S3, which fixed this issue however my fans would always be running in sleep then.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Windows 10 overrides bios settings for wake-up.
I have set in bios to wake up on ctrl-esc.
That works until I boot into windows 10.
Now when I shut down windows 10, my computer will
wake up on ANY keyboard event or mouse event.
OK so then I uncheck in windows:
power management->allow this device to wake up the computer.
Now the problem is that when windows shuts down, it turns off
the keyboard totally so it is impossible to send keystrokes.
All this time my settings in bios are:
don't power up from mouse
powerup on ctrl-esc ONLY
In windows 7 I don't have this problem, everything works
as set in bios.
My computer is not in sleep or hibernate.
Another thing to note is that when I power it up
by clicking any key ,and then power it down on the switch
next time it will only start on ctrl-esc.
(hybrid sleep is off)
OK I figured it out.
I need to disable "fast startup".
Everything works fine now.
But if I wanted fast startup , is there a way to
choose which key wakes up the system?
This seem to happen after hybrid sleep mode. (As also earlier
with regular sleep or hibernation mode). Re-enabling in bios
cures the problem. Sound performance as good as can be for
built-in audio. (Will try the latest realtek driver set, although
windows reports that PC is currently up to date).
Sound familiar to anyone?
Try to reinstall your chipset driver first.
If that doesn't work then check the the hybrid sleep mode settings, I have read it causes some problems.

What directions? How do you know that any change is needed or possible in the BIOS?
I probably shouldn't be posting here, as I have never used WOL, but I thought it was just a matter of enabling the feature in the Properties of the adapter (in Device Manager). It does make sense that it could be an item in the BIOS; I just don't recall ever reading that anywhere.

Hi I am new here Hoping someone can help me out with this issue I work in IT so am not a complete computer bonehead and am at my wits end with this My laptop is about years old it's a toshiba For whatever reason it Laptop wake extremely wake up sleep minutes to mode, slow from 5+ to started taking minutes to wake up from sleeping If it sleeps for an hour it's OK but if you leave it sleep all night and try to wake it up in the morning it's quite cranky After the minute wake up it performs as normal It was running Windows Home bit Troubleshooting steps that I have taken are as follows Reinstalled windows Issue was resolved but after about - weeks issue came back I thought maybe it was some type of windows update so I reinstalled windows again and paid closer attention to the updates Issue presented itself again after Laptop extremely slow to wake up from sleep mode, 5+ minutes to wake - weeks and there were no updates immediately done prior to it starting I started to think maybe it was something related to my hard drive so i performed laptop surgery and swapped out my original hard drive with a solid slate drive and installed windows Ultimate bit this laptop can support bit so I figured why not upgrade Laptop extremely slow to wake up from sleep mode, 5+ minutes to wake issue again was resolved for a few weeks and now it's back to taking minutes to wake up again If you're turning the laptop on from scratch it takes - seconds tops if you're restarting it's - seconds tops man I love SSD if you're waking itup within the hour its - seconds But anything longer then that minutes It barely has any software installed all I use this laptop for is the internet and office type stuff I've checked event viewer to see if it's having driver issues or this or that and haven't been able to pinpoint this One of my coworkers suggested defragging the registry but that hasn't sped it up either Any thoughts My current work around is just to always power down the laptop

I may not be able to help, but I am curious - is this a dedicated telephone line?
If not, what services do you use, like call forward, messaging, call waiting, etc.
Or does the dedicated line have anything like that that you know of? (or didn't know of)
I've started to have no screen 950 sometimes sometimes black wake, touch wake. why? Lumia randomly restarting, on on a number of debilitating problems with my lumia which is a shame because they are the same problems that made me leave android for the WP platform To start off my phone has been randomly restarting The restarting seems to have started after the anniversary update version There's nothing common between one reset to the next Lumia 950 randomly restarting, sometimes black screen on wake, sometimes no touch on wake. why? just that they become more frequent as battery life reduces starts at around This is also sometimes accompanied by a streak yellow across the screen I don't know if this is relevant or not My second issue which has been happening the longest is that the screen will sometimes be completely off when I wake up the phone I will put the phone into sleep with the power button and when I wake it up with the power button the screen is black I know the phone is awake because windows hello will try to sign me in I have reason to believe that the touch digitizer is also still working This is fixed either by trying to sleep cycle the phone or by holding down the power button until the phone prompts me to power it off This seems to wake the screen up the screen also sometimes wakes up when windows hello signs me in but this is rare This problem has become less frequent since the anniversary update My third problem is that sometimes the touch digitizer doesn't work on wake This is similar to my last problem except that it always goes away by sleep cycling my phone This problem has also become less prominent since the anniversary update Any advice would be greatly appreciated I'm probably going to take my phone to a windows store this weekend to see it they can do anything about it but I'm not hopeful exactly I've had bad experiences with my last windows phone a lumia icon so I'm starting to lose trust with Microsofthttp://forums.windowscentral.com/ask-question/437888-lumia-950-randomly-restarting-sometimes-black-screen-wake-sometimes-no-touch-wake-why.html

More to above: Dell has suggested I must re-install Windows. I've never done that, and I realize I'd probably lose all my applications and data - no good. Seems to me that's like using an atomic bomb to kill a mosquito. And why should I assume that will work?
But is there a way to re-install -- or maybe fix -- Windows that leaves everything else safe?
FYI - About a month or so ago, I ran SFC (System File Checker) in repair mode, and that didn't help with this problem.
Hello. I'm looking at this laptop: http://www.dell.com/us/p/inspiron-15-3542-laptop/pd?oc=fncwg2327b&model_id=inspiron-15-3542-laptop
I would like to know if it has wake on LAN and wake on RTC or not.
Since I did not get an answer here, I went ahead and ordered the machine anyway, and took a chance. It does NOT have either feature in it.
It passed my other tests, so I'm keeping it and the next computer I get will probably have both of those features, but for this one, I guess I'll live without, since the network isn't finished to the point where I could actually use it anyway yet.
HiI own a X1 Carbon Gen 2 thinkpad and wonder if it is possible to replace the current keyboard with a X1 Carbon gen 3 keyboard (with proper mouse buttons), or if it will not fit?I have tried to check the manuals and the connectors seems similar although some things, such as the fingerprint reader, seems different. I have no problem "loosing" the adaptive keyboard and fingerprint reader if I can have all the functionality of the keyboard and trackpoint on the new "keyboard" (i.e. the gen 3 frontpanel).
I am interested in this exact topic as well. Looks like the Gen 3 keyboards lack the adaptive keyboard - that clear stripe on the top that changes. The FRU for these X1 Carbons seem to be the whole keyboard, adaptive part, trackpad and bezel - they go for 150 USD or so. Problem is we don't know if it will work given the model year differences. A nice alternative would be just to replace the trackpoint. They came close with this one, but it is no macbook in terms of tactile feel of the pad. I really am having a hard time with it and it's been about a month. Lenovo please help!https://forums.lenovo.com/t5/ThinkPad-X-Series-Laptops/X1-Carbon-Gen-3-Keyboard-on-X1-Carbon-Gen-2/td-p/1939212
I have ASUS G72.
Logmein software is able to wake the computer up with On Board Wake up is disabled or enabled in BIOS.
I have also Toshiba L505D.
Logmein software can wake the computer up only if Wake up on LAN is enabled in BIOS.
What is the difference between ASUS BIOS's On Board Wake up option and Toshiba BIOS's Wake up on LAN option?
UPDATE: I found out that ASUS's Option was for diskless boot and using network hard disks as hard disks. Nothing to do with Wake up on LAN.
One thing that could make a BIG difference here is the fact one is a PC and the other is notebook. The ATX Form Factor standard for PCs calls for the power supply to deliver +5Vsb standby voltage to various parts of the motherboard, to include the front panel power switch, RAM (for hibernate modes), and various devices (keyboard, mouse, NIC) for such "Wake on...". commands.
A notebook, however, does not have this standby voltage because obviously, it would run down the battery if the charger is not plugged in.

I'm trying to find the settings called "ModemRingOn" and "PME Wake Up Event" both in bios but i can't find them.
Does anyone know where they are? Like under what options in bios?
They may not be there at all. If the modem is built into the board, maybe.
I'm trying to find the settings called "ModemRingOn" and "PME Wake Up Event" both in bios but i can't find them.

BIOS's vary widely; there is no standard features that are included. It's possible your BIOS has neither of them.
If these are features you are interested in exist, the first thing to do is to check the motherboard manufacturer's web site's "support" page, and find out what the latest version of BIOS is available for your motherboard, compare that to what you actually have on your motherboard, and then read the change log to see if possible these features were added.
You can also research these features by Googling the text "ModemRingOn" and the model number of your motherboard "GA-XYZ123" in the same search, in order to filter hits that are limited to those that include references to both of these qualities. Look for forum posts, and other technical sites & information.
Also, look for the User Manual for your motherboard on-line. Sometimes these include information on the BIOS of the motherboard.
My main system has Windows7 and I have an HP Proliant Microserver with Windows Home Server 2011 (probably irrelvant) and Wake on LAN hardware. The server is "off" right now, but the LAN activity light is blinking, so the LAN card has retained power (for the W-o-L function).
Do I have all I need to wake the server from my desktop, or do I need to install extra software (to send the "magic packet", to wake the server). If I need 3rd party software, then what is recommended?
I've tinkered with WoL during my professional IT career, but never really had much serious use for it, but now I have systems of my own, I'm more interested in getting it working.
It has been a long time since I played with WoL. You might already have what you need to send that "magic packet", but this little 3rd party tool might be easier to use:

I have two gen 2 X1 carbons, one with an i5 4200u (8GB RAM) and the other is i5 4210u (4GB RAM). The 4210u one, when not doing anything very intensive, is completely silent. I can put the vent up against my ear and hear nothing at all - the fan is off. The 4200u is not the same. When it boots off, the fan is off. It will stay off for about 30 seconds and then start up. It's very quiet but I don't see why it's on at all. It should be off, all it's doing is wasting power. Why is it that the 4210u stays off until I'm doing something intensive but the 4200u is always on? The 4210u is 100Mhz faster but they have the same TDP. Is there something I forgot to install after updating to Windows 10 that tells the fan to shut up when not doing much? Hi, I have read that all the carbons after the gen 2 use an M2.ssd. Is there anything to stop you from changing or swapping the ssd around. Are there any videos or pictures online that might show me where the drive is located. Is there anything that would stop me from buying the model with the smallest and cheapset M2 ssd and then later putting in something newer? Thanks

It's not possible because the two systems use SSDs with different physical sizes. The original X1C uses an mSATA SSD but the X1C2 uses an M.2 SSD.

Hi,My X1 with great specs is not as good as it should be (i7, 8GB RAM, 500G SSD).2 -3 times a day it crashes (BSOD). After installing Synaptics general drivers, that's gone. But I end up with many applications not scrolling. The fingerprint is unstable. Often the light is green when logging on, sometimes still working, sometimes not working at all. Searching the internet, I find I am not alone. This is my first post on this forum.I have been using Thinkpads for something like 15 years, and mostly been proud and happy about it. X, T-series, even 770 (?). They were all very stable and usable for business use.My X1 is mediocre however.I would very much like Lenovo to do something about these issues for their flagship system.https://forums.lenovo.com/t5/ThinkPad-X-Series-Laptops/X1-carbon-failures/td-p/3343246
HI everyone, I have a question regarding SIM in x1 carbon. I am not very good with technology, so I don`t know if my x1 carbon has a working SIM slot. It has a slot for SIM card but when I put it on, it doesn`t respond anything, like `detecting` or something like that. My question is: does x1 Carbon (Model 20A8-S00600) has a working SIM card slot. If it does, how can I make it functional. If it doesn`t what do I need to do/buy to make it functional. Thanks,Kushtrim

Hi and welcome, kushtrimYour laptop is "WWAN ready" only, i.e.has the SIM card holder, the SIM card reader and WWAN antennas installed. WWAN modem wasn't factory preinstalled, that's a cause you don't see anything once SIM card is installed. So, to use laptop WWAN capabilities, purchase and install WWAN modem - 3G or 3g/LTE.https://forums.lenovo.com/t5/ThinkPad-X-Series-Laptops/Thinkpad-x1-carbon-SIM/td-p/2211034

I just bought a new X1 Carbon (Gen 4), and am looking for a sleeve for it. I took the Carbon especially because it's so lightweight and small, but unfortunately the offical size-matching sleeve from Lenovo (X1 Ultra Sleeve) is quite big, and weighs almost half as much as the laptop itself, and twice as much as a regular zip sleeve...I'm looking for a small lightweight neoprene/polyester/whatever sleeve with a zip in which the X1C Gen 4 would fit nicely. Any recommendations from people who already went through searching for one? Or maybe there is a basic reversible sleeve with the X1 Carbon dimensions planned from Lenovo? I believe that drive in not self-encrypting/ Please note that the BIOS password is not what is used to encrypt self-encrypting. Rather it is the ATA (hard disk) password. In any case, if you set an ATA password, it is considered uncrackable. If you have a self-encrypting drive and no ATA password, the drive can simply be moved to a different machine and read directly.https://forums.lenovo.com/t5/ThinkPad-X-Series-Laptops/X1-Carbon-512-GB-SSD-Encryption/td-p/3305843

I just bought my NFS Carbon Collectors Edition about a month ago, and the first time I installed it everything worked perfectly...but just recently I did a complete reboot and cleaning of my system (as in everything). When everything on my comp was back to normal, I tried to install NFS again but alas! It failed!
For some reason the only point I can reach during the installation process is the license agreement, which appears blank. If I agree with the license, it then tells me that I need Direct X 0(yes 0) or higher to continue.
I have no idea what that's about... I checked my disk, which is so new it doesn't have time to get any scratches on it, and even scanned it for errors, but nothing showed up.
I really need some help on this matter. Any support will be appreciated.
Install the latest version of DirectX, available here, and see if it works.
My friend is trying to play Need For Speed Carbon, but it doesn't load up. He gets a black screen, but then it quits with the error NFS has encountered an error and must close. He has an Integrated 92mb vid card (should be enough considering the game ran fine on my Laptop's integrated vid card). his drivers are up to date, but still no go. Any suggestions?
