Dell XPS 8700 and EVGA Geforce GTX 1060 SC

Q: Dell XPS 8700 and EVGA Geforce GTX 1060 SC

Easy strait forward upgrade, NO PSU upgrade required, size of the card makes it easy to install, scores better than GTX 980 with less power consumption. Just make sure you clean uninstall the previous card download the driver form Evga for the new one and your done. 10-15 min upgrade.
I don't game so I cant day how well it does but I will be using this for video editing so i will post updates if needed. Here is a bench-test I've done:

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I purchased this card from Amazon to play a game. The card installed properly and worked fine except that it kept putting the computer into a sleep state which usually required powering off and restarting.  The last time I turned the monitor off the system became unresponsive.
This system has 32 GB RAM and has Bios v 11, 256 GB SSD with WIndows 10 Professional v 1067, Build 14393.105.
I removed the card and replaced it with the stock GTX 660 that came with the system. I am returning it to Amazon as incompatible.

A:8700 problem with Zotac GTX 1060 AMP

Others are finding 10x0 cards compatible, so it is either Zotac specific or a driver SNAFU. I suspect  drivers more than the card itself, especially if it will POST and boot and get into windows.
If you have not yet returned the card I suggest trying to un-install and re-install the drivers.
A common recurring problem when upgrading is part of the previous driver or previous driver setting remains and it conflicts with the new install. It has been so common that there is a great tool written to remove all the litter, called Display Driver Uninstaller, and while I have not used it on Win10, I've used it on Win7 and 8 a few times.

Hey, so im looking to upgrade my graphics card in my computer, which i bought about a year ago; overall it's pretty good other than the crappy radeon r7 200 series graphics card that came with it. I'm planning on buying an EVGA GEFORCE GTX 1060 3GB soon. I have multiple problems: Firstly i'm not sure if it will fit into my motherboard or if it's even compatible with it, this being a GA-F2A68HM-HD2.
Furthermore, I'm not sure what the power output is of my pc, so idk how to check if it can support it (i also dont know the power requirement of it so any help on that would be appreciated)
Notes, in my case, it is mostly empty spare for the fans, cpu etc, the motherboard has nothing opposite it, with about 10/11 cm of space between it and the side of my pc.
Any help with this would be amazing,
Thanks in advance.

Just tried to install a new Geforce GTX 1060 and get a blank screen. When i power on the Erazer internal lights come on and fans start running but no boot. Could it be a power supply problem or motherboard incompatibility? The card requires 400W power but that shouldn't be a problem for the 510. Doesn't it have a 600W power supply? Anyone else tried to upgrade to the Geforce 10 series? Thanks for any help! Surjin

Hello, I have XPS 8700, which came with OEM GTX 745. I am thinking of upgrading it to Geforce GTX 970 or 980. Do these video cards word on XPS 8700?
I am especially concerned, because, while recommended system power for 970 is 500 W according to nVidia's specification, total power of XPS8700 is 460 W. Has someone successfully installed GTX 970 or 980 on XPS 8700?

I currently have an XPS 8700 running a Geforce GT 640 card with three monitors, and want to add two more.  I attempted to purchase another 640 card and SLI the two together, but they won't fit into the case together.  My next step was to purchase a GT 620 card an attempt to run the two of those together(but not SLI), but for some reason my computer isn't recognizing the new card.  I'm fairly certain the 620 has power and I installed the drivers for it, but it's still not recognizing it and the monitors won't work when plugged in.  Is there some setting that I have to change to get the system to run two cards at once?

If it isn't possible to run 5 monitors in this fashion, what would be the best way to do so?

Thank you for any help.

A:XPS 8700 - trying to run 5 monitors with Geforce

You only have one PCI-e X16 slot for video in the XPS 8700 so where are you installing that second video card? The other PCI-e slots (x1 and x4) probably don't  have enough bandwidth for a video card.
If your 3 monitors are currently connected to the add-in GT 640 video card, you should be able to connect the fourth to one of the onboard video ports, but only after you go into BIOS setup and enable the Intel Multi-Display option.
A fifth monitor could be connected using a USB>{video} dongle, where {video} is one of the ports available on the monitor, eg USB>HDMI or USB>VGA, etc.

Hi Mattmazz
Thanks for writing to us.
Please disconnect all the connectors and then hold down the power button for 15 secs, now remove the memory modules and put them back one by one and observe for any changes.
If possible please try another set of memory modules. If there is a separate graphics card, remove that as well and try the onboard.

I have the HP Pavilion 550-153w  and I want to put in EVGA GeForce GTX 950 FTW GAMING ACX 2.0. Will my system handle it?

The question would be why? What do you want for it?  A particular game? Of concern is the i3-4170 processor.  If it's a game, go to game-debate and do the "Can I play It".The GTX 950  peaks at 90W. Your system would require a minimum of 350W. I would recommend a Corsair CX 500, provided that your processor is sufficient (which I really doubt).

I can not decide between these two cards. The Evga is just barely faster than the PNY and I know Evga's a really good company for video cards, but so is PNY, and right now I have a PNY 7800GT. I just don't know which one to buy. I've read some reviews of people saying that the Evga is loud and uses a lot of power. As of right now I'm leaning toward the PNY.

A:GeForce 7950, PNY or Evga?

Well, I'd get EVGA. They offer a great warranty, and should make great, quality cards.

And an EVGA card will use the same power as a PNY card. I don't know what is that people talking about :unch:

Gang I have a new to me EVGA NVIDIA GeForce 620 GT card that has an unfortunately noisy fan. don't know if it will last or not - it does not feel crunchy, just noisy AFTER THE Nvidia drivers load.
While booted but not into windows 7, its nice and quiet - don't know the idle speed. same with safe mode or whatever else, until the Nvidia driver set loads up, then it goes up considerably and is really annoying.

anyway to do this? I'm fighting with MSI Afterburner utility but so far can't find a way to do anything that the Driver spec doesn't already have builtin

So i have tried my hardest to get this stupid graphics card installed on my widows 10 64bit desktop. The problem is rather straightforward, no matter how many methods i try i can't get a signal to my monitor with the card in. Likely because i don't have the drivers. I plug it in right, i put in the 6pin pci like it says, turn it on to a black screen. I tried installing the drivers without the card in but of course it has to be in or the disk won't install the drivers.

I'm willing to try everything that won't cause permanent damage to my computer, this thing is gonna have to last me a long time. So please give me a hand here. The closest i got to anything working was a blue screen of death which was fixed by the programming in the pc itself. "Whew"

I recently bought a geforce 6800 gt 256 mb video card by EVGA. And my favorite game, Battlefield 2, cant handle it on all high settings on 1024x768 resolution. It runs well, but sometimes, i get frame drop to like 20. Thats with Anti aliasing turned off.
So i am deciding to buy this cooling for it.

And was wondering how much i can bring up the core clock speed up by, and if that speed would make any differnce?
Here are my system spec

-Amd Athlon 64, 3200+ (With Dynamic overlocking enable, which increases processor speed by 10 % under heavy load)
-MSI K8t neo MB
-2 gig corsair XMS ram
-AC97 audio onboard sound
oh yeah, the card is AGP version.

A:Overclocking My EVGA Geforce 6800 gt

every single card is different. I`ve had some cards that will clock to the sky, I`ve had others that would hardly do 10MHz over stock, it`s just luck of the draw as to how good your card will overclock. I use coolbits to overclock as it`s about the easiest and has an auto detect feature which most times gives you a good overclock, but also keeps you in a 'safe' theory anyway.

NVIDIA’s 7950 GX2 is a logical extension of SLI in putting two cards on a single board and does its job well.

Advantages of the card include higher performance than any other single video card on the market, improved AA modes and more. Once NVIDIA releases the driver for SLI of two of the 7950s, it will likely outperform anything on the market.

im working on a EVGA GeForce 7600 GS and the cooling fan is got a bad bearing and i have searched and searched for a replacementy for it and it seems they r not out there?!?

seems that it would be a common fix?!?

anybody have any suggestions??

A:cooling fan for a EVGA GeForce 7600 GS

Contact EVGA. If you recently purchased the card within the past 30 days, they should ship you a new fan for your card.If not, you'll have to try and match one up from an older graphics card. This may or may not work. For the time being, take off the case and place a fan as close to your case as possible to keep the temps down. This is only a temp fix, but it will buy you some time to find the correct fan.
There are also graphics card fans that plug into a pci slot specifically designed to cool the card. The run around $$20 US and some work better than the onboard fan.

It needs that power connection, usually there is a cable that comes with that card that you can attach one end (2x 4 pins) to the PSU and the other 6-pin to the graphic card.

It might just need that power.

If it still doesn't work, even if you think it is seated perfect take it out and put it back in.

You know it seems unlikely but I just bought a 9600 GT yesterday and put it in. I had the exact same problem. Power was connected, it was in just fine and yet no signal.

I took it out and made sure there was no dust and that it was in there correctly when I put it back in and It is working fine for me now.

I know the 275 has 240 shader processors vs 216 with the newer 260 but is it worth the upgrade? Also, I'm looking at the 896MB RAM too, not the 1792MB version (although I'd like to have it but can't afford it).

The only things the GT 430 really has over your current card is DirectX 11 and much lower power,

Video Card Comparison -

for everything else it would be a downgrade. There aren't many reviews that have both cards in it but this one does (for most of the benchmarks),

That card is a good choice. I'd go for a better psu with that thing, you'd barely make it.

On the other hand look into a 4890 1gb, it does beat out the 260 in some benchmarks and is a bit cheaper.

EVGA GeForce GTX 660 FTW ACX Cooler 2GB - $159.99

ASUS Radeon HD 7870 1.0GHZ 2GB - $154.99

I would appreciate any quick responses, as these sales are bound to end very soon!

A:EVGA Geforce GTX 660 FTW Edition vs. Asus Radeon HD 7870

The ACX cooling blows the heat right into your case, I had the 760 4 GB w ACX cooling. But it was still a good card.

You should go with a 700 series card, bought directly from EVGA.

EVGA | Products | Graphics - GeForce 700 Series Family

That price for the 660 is after a mail in rebate, something I never even consider when buying pc parts. You have to look at the total price you`ll be charged, shipping and tax included.

I`m thinking the 7870 would be the better of the 2 cards you have listed. AMD owners would have to chime in.

Hi Ken, Look aon the top back of the graphics card for a switch.  See the below image. You should have received a pamphlet in the box describing the use of the switch (legacy mode or UEFI mode).  If your PC has a version 8 HP BIOS then disable secure boot if set. If your PC is not at a version 8 BIOS level then the switch should be in legacy position.  The pamphlet should describe the use of the switch.

It should not be too much of a problem to install the new video card. You just open the case and install the card in the AGP slot on the motherboard. The card should be autodetected on boot up

I personally think you'd be better off getting a Geforce 8400GS, or ATi HD4350, or Geforce 210GT for that kind of money. I've no idea which is better of the three, but they're all under 50 bucks.

I would have recommended the HD4670 if it wasn't over 100 bucks, which is shocking given the price I paid for it here in the UK a year ago!

A:EVGA SuperClocked 03G-P4-2666-KR GeForce GTX 660 3GB 192-bit GDDR5 PCI Express 3.0 x16 HDCP

This should answer your question. The GTX 660 has 30FPS with ultra quality at 1680x1050. Lowering the quality settings to high, raised the frame rate to nearly 50FPS.

Final Thought:

If you can live with high settings however, you'll boost your frame rates by around 60%, sometimes as much as 80%, which is enough to make the GTX 660 and HD 7850 practical options. ...
Fortunately, there's less to consider when choosing a processor -- just make sure you have a quad-core chip. It doesn't even have to be a new one, as even the Core i7-920 and Phenom II X4 980 took care of business. ...Click to expand...

Side note:

As was the case with Battlefield 3, as long as your processor has four cores/threads, it shouldn't have a problem in EA's latest shooter. The only processors to struggle were the dual-core AMD Phenom and Athlon CPUs, while the game can utilize up to eight threads if your chip has them on tap.Click to expand...

Another improvement would be to get 8GB memory. In my opinion 4GB is boarder-line to being sufficient.

I just installed my new EVGA GeForce GTX750 1G G-Sync video card and it works great, but I'm getting a really high pitched whining sound from it.

I know the older versions of this card had noisy fans but this one is quiet except for this high pitched noise. I saw threads in the EVGA forum for similar problems on other EVGA cards.

I think I'm going to return it but would like to know what is an equivalent card for a similar price. I paid $102 for it and I now see it for $109 so something in that price range would be great.

I'm not a gamer, just wanted a decent video card with a DVI output so I could use my DVI KVM switch with my two Desktop computers.

A:High pitched whining sound from new EVGA GeForce GTX750 1G

Back in 2007 I had a noisy fan in a brand new desktop. And (after considerable angst) the source was the NVIDIA GeForce graphics card. Turned out there was a white wire touching the GeForce fan under the card, and that was the source of the noise. I moved the wire and restarted the machine. It was totally quiet. Perhaps a quick look at your fan to make sure nothing is touching it?

Yes your motherboard could run it, yes it is a good card, yes you will need a new psu (I suggest the Antec TruepowerII 550) and yes, you need more ram. You have enough ram to run all of the modern games, but only in lower settings. If that's ok, then get the card and a psu.

I feel that I should be more observant. In Control Panel > Sound > Playback > Select the Realtek device > Properties > Levels there are the exact changes I need. I don't know why I didn't notice until now. Could explain why there was no "Show Meters" button in this release but I thought Windows 7 also had the same leveling and there was the leveling in Dell Audio as well.
I'm still going with a new sound card from Creative however, seen a super nice $70 one that looks awesome and seems to have features to match.

My suggestion. shutdown, unplug both power and SATA from your old HDD reboot and see if it works.
Assuming it does, we can sort out next steps to get your HDD setup as a data disk.
What version of Windoze? What BIOS version. It don't think either matter but it might help to answer the questions.

Hi everyone, I am newbie here. Recently I need to upgrade my ram on XPS8700. And I went to Best Buy and bought a "PNY - 2-Pack 8GB PC3-12800 DDR3 DIMM Unbuffered Non-ECC Desktop Memory Kit". It does not work, computer can not power on with flashing orange lights.
So I went to Crucial website, it recommends me to use a DDR3L RAM. I saw all the DDR3Ls are for laptops. Could it be used in my desktop? And my current RAM is Hyundai. Could it be mixed with other brand like Crucial or Kingston?

A:Dell XPS 8700 RAM upgrade

Laptops first started using DDR3L which is why the market is flooded with it, however you just need to look for the desktop version for your computer.  If you go to crucial they should have an auto test that will detect the correct ram for your machine and give you the list of options you can pick from.

I'm considering installing an SSD on my desktop computer, and have read several places I need to set my BIOS to AHCI mode. I have no such mode listed in my BIOS. The only 2 options listed are LEGACY and UEFI. Is Legacy just Dell's description for AHCI? Can I just install using LEGACY? I can't seem to get any answers from the Dell forums. I'm using Windows 7 64 bit OS. I think the bios version is 8. If I use the LEGACY mode, will Trim still work? This will be a clone, not a fresh Windows install.

What are the possible cpu coolers that you can install on the mobo dell xps 8700 motherboard without any fancy ghetto mounting. Just as if it was a normal motherboard?

The XPS 8500, the precursor to the XPS 8700, has standard Socket 1155 spacing. Socket 1150 shares the spacing of the 1155, and thus I believe an aftermarket cooler should work.
A Cooler Master Vortex was a perfect fit on my XPS 8500 motherboard, and I assume the same would hold true for an XPS 8700. You will use optical drive-type screws to fasten the cooler to the board rather than the flimsy plastic push-pins.
Looking at an XPS 8700 mainboard on eBay, I can see a standard four-pin CPU fan header, just like that of the XPS 8500.

Aurora R1 is running Windows 7.x
Aurora R3 is running WIndows 7.x
What MS OS can the Aurora R1 support (2560x1440 display, updated GPU)
What MS OS can the Aurora R3 support (2560x1440 display)
Can either move to Windows 8.1.x? Or both?
Can either or both move to Windows 10.x?
What is significantly different between Win 8.1.x Pro and Win 10 Pro?

Thanks gurus!

First there is a free upgrade from Windows 7 OEM to Windows 10 Retail so there is absolutely zero point in purchasing a Windows 8.1 Retail license...
Windows 10 TH2 is essentially a fixed version of Windows 8.1 where Metro Apps work correctly as "Windows".
Almost any system shipped with Windows 7 can run Windows 10. As they are 2009 and 2011 models respectively Dell did not provide updated drivers for Windows 8.x or Windows 10 because they are all out of warranty. All the drivers should be inbuilt into Windows 10 TH2 or automatically obtained via Windows Update. Its advised to update your BIOS to the latest revision before proceeding.
A Clean Installation also in general performs better. See here for details:
Both systems likely have a legacy (non-UEFI) BIOS so take that into account when making the Bootable USB. Although you may want to look at the BIOS settings for the 2011 model to see if there is UEFI support.

Since I upgraded to W10, the Audio Service and internet connection both keep crashing. Randomly.

My computer is the only one hard-wired to the router. We have others and none loses their signal. I made sure to try wi-fi on and off, no difference. Tried a different cable.

The Audio service crashing is much more annoying. It happens every 15 minutes. Everytime, I can restart the service like if nothing happened.

I tried to update drivers, disable / uninstall every listing in the Audio controllers (device manager). I have NVIDIA, Realtek and Logitec Webcam 500 High Definition Audio.

Audio service keeps crashing, no matter what.

I currently own a Dell 8700 XPS.  I am running Windows 7 Home premium.  It has an i7-4790 and it won't turbo boost.  I have checked the settings to make sure it is enabled.  When I run AIDA64 Extreme, it ramps up to 3.59 but won't push past that.  The temperatures are all good, I believe the highest it gets is 72 degrees C on one core with and average of 68 degrees C for the the processor.  I only run the test for 10 minutes.  I recently updated the bios from the Dell Support page and it is running version A11.
I also downloaded and ran Intel's processor diagnostic and it passed.  Dell's CPU scan didn't detect any errors either.
Any suggestions?

My PC went into a restore mode on its own after locking up.  It had been updated to Win10, but after the restore it was back to Win7.  Most of my files are there along with MS Ofiice and the related data files.  Missing are my email program (Mozilla) and files and my Quicken and files.  There are a number of locked files that return "access denied" when I try to open the file or directory.  I'm guessing everythign is there, just hidden.  i have not reinstalled Mozilla or Qbooks yet, just in case that buries the files deeper.
Someone suggested i reinstall Win10....MS said they would give me another install for free after the 7/29 deadline, but again, I want to see if I can recover my files.  There is no restore point to go back to since the Dell utility ran.  Any direction will be appreciated.

Before you go getting a new hard drive, I also had this issue. There are two versions of Win 7, one includes drivers and one doesn´t. Try this: go into your device manager and scan down to find your Audio then look to see if there are any big yellow questions marks. These will be missing or out of date drivers. Update or install these drivers then see how you go. Control panel> sound> test. Good luck.

I just made a new Complete Factory Restore of my XPS 8700. I used an external WD My Passport drive. I cleaned and reformatted the drive before I started and the creation seems to have been successful.   I wasn't sure how much space it would take so I had this 500GB Passport available. The restore took about 10 GB. MY QUESTION IS : Can I store other folders/files on this drive and it won't mess up the restore function?RegardsJH

As far as I know yes, just keep your backup files/folders in a single folder in the root directory.  The restore program should ignore it since I believe its just a generic script that it runs.

The only thing that I can think of to try is uninstalling the previous card that's being replaced, Nvidia GT 720, and booting with the new card installed. But I'm not sure that'll help, I just don't understand why I'm not getting basic, legacy video when I reboot the computer with the HD 5770 installed.

Any ideas?

Hi Was your Original OS Windows 8? ...

It also seems possible that your Computer is not Compatible with some Graphics Cards ..
Have seen this with your Model and Xps 8500..
I am sure that you have checked that the card does work ...

I am getting random BSODs with a brand new dell XPS 8700. I got my older SSD replaced through RMA assuming that could have been the cause and installed Windows 8 fresh install after getting the new dell. I've been having random BSODs on the computer, it will even happen when I'm not even using the computer and leave it on.

BSOD dump files attached.

? OS - Windows 8 64bit
? What was original installed OS on system? Windows 8 64bit
? Is the OS an OEM version (came pre-installed on system) or full retail version (YOU purchased it from retailer)? Came-preinstalled, but I reinstalled it when installing brand new SSD
? Age of system (hardware) Less than 2 weeks
? Age of OS installation - have you re-installed the OS? Less than 2 weeks

? CPU: Intel i7
? Video Card: Nvidia GeForce GE GT625
? MotherBoard
? Power Supply - brand & wattage

? System Manufacturer: DELL
? Exact model number (if laptop, check label on bottom): XPS 8700

I have debugged the dumps and all seem to have the same error, I have done some research about your crashes and have found some possible causes:

1.) Incorrect BIOS Configuration
2.) Faulty RAM Module

The Fixes for these are as follows:
1.) Restore the BIOS Configuration
2.) Remove the faulty RAM.

Modifying BIOS/CMOS settings incorrectly can cause serious problems that may prevent your computer from booting properly. I cannot guarantee that any problems resulting from the configuring of BIOS/CMOS settings can be solved. Modifications of the settings are at your own risk. But it may be the only way to fix the BSOD's you are encountering.

If I was in your position I would try restoring the BIOS first, before trying to remove RAM. If you are ensure on how to restore the BIOS please look at this before trying: How can I reset CMOS or BIOS settings?

I wouldn't try the hard reset unless the normal defaults do not work. If neither work then try removing the RAM.

This is going to sound stupid/crazy/dumb/etc...but tonight, for the first time, I noticed a flashing white light on the front panel of my Dell XPS 8700...the light is next to the "Mini/MMC SD/RS/SDXC' slot...doesn't appear to have anything to do with putting an SD in. The light is sporadic, sometimes quickly flashing and then nothing..other times multiple flashes. My computer appears to be working fine.
I have searched all over the Dell site and can't find anything...I know on my laptop I have a flashing light next to the battery light..I have always assumed that is the processing light.
I feel like this something I should know; I just want to make sure that it is a normal thing.

A:What do the flashing lights mean on the front of the Dell XPS 8700?

Hi Troyj1972
Thanks for writing to us.
Do you see a cylindrical icon beside the light, it indicates the hard drive.
Which means there is a continuous access of data on the system which is indicated by the hard drive activity light. Even if you haven open any programs the HD activity will still blink as the windows is using few backend programs , drivers etc.
The system is working normal, nothing to worry about.

I have the Dell XPS 8700 Desktop with a 2TB drive.  If I will be doing some video editing with Adobe Premiere CC, should I store all my video files on the OS C: drive? Or, should I purchase an additional internal hard drive (i'm thinking a WD Black 7200 4TB drive) to work off of?

A:DELL XPS 8700 Desktop Video Editing

The extra hard drive will help, as it will eliminate contention between the OS and video editing.
