I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

This is what happens when I try to use the search feature on the start menu... as you can see it isn't working properly...
I've looked already to see what possible fixes there are and have come across renaming/deleting the key HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Curre ntVersion\Explorer\FolderTypes\{ef87b4cb-f2ce-4785-8658-4ca6c63e38c6}
But... I cannot find it in my registry editor.

I've also come across restarting the search service, rebuilding the index, and applying the hotfix, none of which worked. That and the hotfix wasn't even compatible for some reason, any other suggestions?

I upgraded from Windows XP to 7. I have "menu command" and "menu pop-up" sound effects set but they are not working for the Windows 7 start menu. They used to work for XP. It was helpful to hear a sound effect whenever a menu expanded or item was pressed in the start menu. I know this may be a minor problem, but can this be fixed in a future patch or service pack?

Whenever I go to use my computer it takes a while to start working properly. I don't mean like to boot up, but for the first 5-10 mins or so it freezes and stutters. Once it starts its working fine. (It's not sleeping or hibernating while I'm not using it.. The screen turns off. That's all) Main use is Adobe Lightroom. The CPU isn't maxed out (hovers around 30 percent) and the RAM isn't either. Any ideas? I should add that there are no other programs open except Lightroom and maybe chrome. No scans in the background either. Windows 10

A:Windows 10 start menu not working

It's a real pain, Microsoft still haven't made the "Start Menu" stable. I would suggest that you use the Windows button and "X" together then select "Shut Down or Sign Out" then select "Restart". I've found this to work and usually the restart cures the problem, BUT, we shouldn't be faced with this basic failure of Windows. This also applies when the "notification menu" fails too.

I have the same problem, Search only reveals main folders e.g., Programs but does not reveal files within folders. I have also tried the recommended fixes like the Registry Key mentioned but this key does not exist on my computer. Microsoft have provided a 'hotfix' for the problem (Beta) but this did not work either. Would a repair install fix this issue?. I am reluctant to go down this road as everything else is running very smoothly.

If you're using the Start menu Search utility, then open Windows Explorer, click on your C drive, and type the file name in the search box in the upper right of the screen.

My laptop is LENOVO G510. It came with windows 8 single language. I upgraded to windows 8.1 single language a year ago. I updated it to windows 10 home by triggering the update. The upgrade went successfully. But the problem now is the start button, applications in the taskbar(only right click) and icons on the taskbar on the right side(time, battery, wifi etc) are not working. They work if I click them after a gap of ten minutes. But if I click them for a second time immediately, they won't work.
I got a message box showing "startmenu and cortana are not working, it will be fixed the next time you sign in". When I sign out and sign in, there is no change.
Is it my only problem or it occured to many laptops?
Is there any way to fix it?
Is Microsoft working to fix it soon?
Please inform me.

It wouldn't be windows if it didn't get old at least once daily!

Have you tried duplicating the problem in safe mode? It may be that some application that loads on startup is kind of "half crashing" or conflicting with another program.
I would try it in safe mode and see if you are able to access the functions you speak of. If you have no problems in safe, you can try rebooting in regular mode and using ctrl alt del to bring up task manager. Then start quitting unnecessary applications until you get control of the lower part of your desktop back.

Hi, please see my replies to the same issue in this thread (above)
Resolution To Nonfunctioning Start Button??? - Windows 10 Forums

Unfortunately powershell commands like that have broken universal apps since build 10586 (November), unless MS has fixed this in a recent update.

Do check for 3rd party conflicts, and then do an in-place upgrade install as per that thread.

The in-place upgrade install
- keeps everything
- sets system restore off (again!)
- may lose custom fonts
- may need you to set up your WiFi connection again
- may lose an odd association
- needs subsequent windows updates to be redone

Hi guys,

Quite confused, and not sure what to do.

Any help is appreciated

Right click at it > click Command Prompt (Admin) > type powershell > press Enter key.
At the flashing prompt, copy and paste this command line ( to avoid typo it's best to apply Copy/paste method)......

Get-AppXPackage -AllUsers | Foreach {Add-AppxPackage -DisableDevelopmentMode -Register "$($_.InstallLocation)\AppXManifest.xml"}

A:Windows 10 boot logo shows up twice and then start menu stops working

Here are a few suggestions:

1.) If this has happened for a long time I wonder how your hardware would react to a different operating system? (Just as a test)
2.) Windows may be slow for any of the following reasons: bad RAM, failing Hard Drive, incorrect or missing drivers for one or more components
3.) Bad or failing Motherboard
4.) There are a number of free tools available which boot from a USB bootable stick that can help you test your RAM, Hard Disk and, in some cases, your MB, too.

Search these forums or the WWW for some of the available tools that you can use to diagnose hardware problems.

Just some ideas that I hope can help.

Hello All,

When I click on the search button in the start menu of WinXp,
or when I use the search item in the context menu, it doesn't work.

Nothing happens and I have to wait about 30 seconds
before regaining control over the computer
(the start button remains in the dark state, and nothing reacts,
except the task manager)

Searching does work if I use the Search button in Windows Explorer.
It also works in safe mode.

Reinstalling the search assistant does not help.

I also checked my computer with adaware, spybot and some AV-programs,
but that doesn't help either.

Anyone have any suggestions?

Its been happening ever since I installed Win7.

For example, When I click Start, type "CC" in the search box, the Start menu displays what I intend to start (CCleaner) but when I press enter I get this:

Its acting completely wierd!

On top of that, when I right click the entry, I get a menu which is expanded towards the left awkwardly. See below:

I also recall that I have unchecked "Allow files on this drive to have contents indexed in addition to file properties." in the properties of my Windows 7 boot drive.

And since the programs are installed there, I think the problem might be related.

I have checked it again but it dosen't have any effect!

Please help! Any and all replies appreciated!

Thank you!

Hello mangaliagr Welcome to the Ten Forums! and apparently the "World of Upgrades" as well!

Your description certainly does seem to suggest the laptop there didn't see 10 come with it but was to see an upgrade to 10 from 7, 8, or 8.1? Often the upgrade from one version to another newer one will simply come out "Buggy as All Heck"! You may see immediate problems or they might remain tucked away at first and appear sometime later since something never went on fully at the time of the upgrade itself.

How am I doing so far? When going to upgrade a 7 laptop to 10 the problem of not even seeing a Start button as well as not being able to get into the AllApps was immediately seen. Fortunately I was already planning a clean install to follow anyways already having seen two desktops seeing upgrade installs with the first coming out a mess due to having storage drives plugged in during the upgrade attempts that is!

Once I discovered that the additional drives had to be unplugged the upgrade proceeded to be the mess that came out followed by a second upgrade install to repair the first! A week later the first week 10 was out a clean install replaced the mess! Unfortunately you could well end up either needing to see a repair install if not a full fresh copy of 10. But let's try a couple of other things first.

First on the list would be the System File Checker and if you did 10 media made up by chance either a usb flash drive or burned a dvd having the flash drive plugged in or the dvd in the drive will be a help if the system tool should find any files missing or goofed. It will simply start extracting what it needs as long as the repair isn't too extensive where other options would then have to be looked at. To get that running simply right click on the Start button which should still see the right click menu appear and simply scroll down that until you get to the Command prompt(admin) option. At the dos like prompt type in: "sfc /scannow" and hit enter to get that going.

It's certainly not a sure fire remedy but could get things cleared up for you. The Second item of interest is the Disk Check tool you would schedule if you can without a hard boot that to see the tool run and repair any disk errors found on the drive. While you still have the elevated command prompt open you would type in: "chkdsk /r/f" without the quotations for the r=Repair and f=Fix repair switches both added onto the command there. You should then see the message that the tool has been scheduled for the next startup since it can't be started up when at the command prompt.

For the immediate start you can still go to the C drive in an explorer window to right click on it and open the Tools tab looking for the Error checking button on the properties screen there. The tool checks for file system type errors and will fix what it can but won't be replacing anything.

When I click on the Start Menu it does not open. Right Click will open the context menu, but I cannot access the actual Start Menu. Also, the Command Prompt will not run, or rather, it opens but immediately closes.

Found a possible fix: was told to run PowerShell as Admin, then paste and run

"Get-AppXPackage -AllUsers | Foreach {Add-AppxPackage -DisableDevelopmentMode -Register "$($_.InstallLocation)\AppXManifest.xml"}".

Did this but did not fix problem.

Windows 10 installation is up-to-date.

Please help; next step that I am aware of is to Reset Windows 10, but this will cause me to have to reinstall all of my applications ( a real pain in the ***, as I'm sure everyone here knows)

The missing start menu was a known bug in the beta of Windows 10, sounds like it made it into your system too.

You can try Safe Mode and to launch it with Command Prompt and run SFC /scannow

I am having a problem with my Dell Inspiron One desktop that requires I go into safe mode. Problem is something happened to the f8 key and I cant access RUN as my computer crashes before I get into the Start menu.

What should I do? Any other ways of getting into safe mode?

My problem is I boot it up then it crashes and goes to a blue screen where it says "A problem has been detected and windows has been shut down to prevent damage"
Then I am told to disable or remove any newly installed hardware. I cant do this from the start menu as the computer crashes when it fully boots up, this is why I have to go into safe mode. If anyone else has had this problem and there are other possible solutions or ways of fixing it please do let me know.

Always include the exact PC model and version of Windows in your posts.
The BSOD probably has more info on it that may help understand your problem, so please post it here.
If you reboot, press F12, and get to the menu, run the diagnostics from there including RAM and extended hard drive tests. Copy any error messages and post them here.

Hello RumourMaker,

You might see if a simple restart may sort it out. If not, then see if doing a System Restore at boot using a restore point dated when the Start Menu did work properly.

Hope this helps,

I recently was asked to upgrade Dell backup and recovery. When I did this the upgrade did not complete but since then the start menu is no longer working. Initially I got a critical error and was asked to restart. Since then nothing happens when I click on the start menu (just the indication for a few seconds that it does try to do something - blue ring - is showing). Also the Internet explorer icon is no longer showing in the bottom task line.
I can still right click on the start menu and get the power option but I cannot call up any apps or programs from there anymore.
How can I get the start menu with the apps and programs call running again?

When I installed Windows 7, some programs would have a little arrow on its shortcut on the start menu that would let me do some actions (eg, word editor would let me view recently open files, media player would let me play/pause songs, messenger would let me open a conversation window). (BTW, I don't know what this feature is called - i attached a screenshot).

But now, the arrows are still there, but when I hover my mouse over them or click them, nothing happens. Why is it not working as before and how do I make it work again?

[NOTE: I don't know where to place this question. If questions about 8.1 must go somewhere else please feel free to move it.]

My problem is that I can't add programs to Start Menu teh way I used to do it, with right click, context menu and Add to Start Menu. It is still there in the context menu, but it doesn't work.

Anyone knows?

Apart from that, in 8.1 when I install a new program, it won't put a tile in the Start Menu by default. I need to do it manually by looking for the program in the list and righ-click-add-to-start-menu, but again, it not always works.

A:[8.1] Add to Start Menu not working

Check "All Apps" by moving your mouse so the downward arrow appears on the start screen. You'll have to find the app there and choose "Pin to Start." If you can't find it in the list, search for it, right click, and choose "Pin to Start." Both should get you the same result.

I had been using the Windows 10 start menu since yesterday but now some hour ago it stopped completely working and I can't access my calendar, search bar or Cortana or click on anything on it. The only thing I can do is right click. I have tried to figure out how to get the Windows 10 update window up to see if there is any new update but without having access to the start menu I have no idea how I can do that.
Would anyone have any idea how to solve it, so I can get the start menu to function again?

Welcome to Windows Seven Forums.

You should be able to launch the Start menu by pressing the Windows key on your keyboard.

The Windows key is the one between the Ctrl key and the Alt key.

If it does, open an elevated command prompt and run sfc /scannow

Hello, Welcome to BleepingComputer.I'm nasdaq and will be helping you.If you can please print this topic it will make it easier for you to follow the instructions and complete all of the necessary steps.===Your infection may have cause this start menu issues. Try this.To make your files visible again, please download the following program to your desktop:Unhide.exeOnce the program has been downloaded, double-click on the Unhide.exe icon on your desktop and allow the program to run. This program will remove the +H, or hidden, attribute from all the files on your hard drives. If there are any files that were purposely hidden by you, you will need to hide them again after this tool is run. This may take sometime, please let if finish.=====However, the newer variants of the FakeHDD rogue programs are now deleting the following folders and storing them into a numbered folder under %Temp%\smtmp\:%Temp%\smtmp\1\ => %AllUsersProfile%\Start Menu%Temp%\smtmp\2\ => %UserProfile%\Application Data\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Quick Launch%Temp%\smtmp\3\ => %AppData%\Roaming\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Quick Launch\User Pinned\TaskBar%Temp%\smtmp\4\ => %AllUsersProfile%\DesktopIt goes without saying that running a %temp% cleaner ahead of restoration would result in loss of these folders <- you may have already run such a tool.Keep me posted.

First check to see how much ram you have (one or some may have gone bad) you may have only enough to run your OS. If this is not the case then run your antivirus s/ware, see if that solves it. If not, whack yur Xp cd in to boot to, and repair yur current install, no data will be lost.

Try getting CWS Shredder, Ad-Aware 6.181 with newest reference build, and Spybot Search and Destroy.

CWS Shredder
and get CWS Shredder

Ad-Aware 6.181

Spybot S&D 1.3

and LSP Fix (Just In Case)

Run CWS Shredder, Ad-Aware, and Spybot S&D, and let it fix everything it finds. Unless you are sure that the program in question is legitimate. Other than that i got nothing... if you aren't too sure about what to delete I guess I'd just wait until a real techy got in here.

LSP Fix is a program that can fix a broken internet connection if a needed .dll file is deleted. Like I said this is a "just in case" program. After running the programs create another log and post back here.

I know those hosts file entrys are pointing to good websites that would get you outta this mess. However I don't know if you should fix them. Well what I said is worth a shot.

So last night I left my laptop on and it downloaded and restarted following a Windows Update. When I log in, my icons (on my desktop, on my taskbar) are not showing. The start menu also does not appear, when clicked OR when the windows key is clicked.

Windows Explorer (explorer.exe) "stopped working" almost immediately each time I rebooted. I have ended the task and create the new task of explorer.exe through the Task Manager but that doesn't accomplish anything, the icons are still missing and the start menu doesn't work.

I restored to a previous save of Windows from a few days ago previous to this issue but the problem is still consistent.

I'm losing patience browsing through various websites and forums and would appreciate any advice or suggestions to find a solution to my problem.

With Thanks,

A:Start menu not working, icons not appearing...

Mark, try creating a new account via Control Panel, User Accounts. See if the problem exists or not. If not then the old account is corrupted so what you can do is copy everything from your old account to the new one (hopefully not the corruption which is usually registry related).

Hi all!

About a year ago, my pinned IrfanView icon in the start menu stopped showing recent documents. The "arrow button" was still there, indicating that there should be some documents to display, but none showed up. Even the pinned documents were gone. When I opened new documents with the program, the list failed to repopulate.

I made a thread here. There were no solutions. In time, I learned to accept that images couldn't be accessed via Start Menu.

Now, yesterday the same problem occurred with Adobe Reader. I had an occurrence of the Adobe Reader crashing around the time this issue became evident.

In summary, this seems more like a Windows issue, not a bug of an individual program.

I have not cleared or turned recent items off and on. Clear recent items on exit is turned off. I don't log off often. Other recent documents work as they should.

How can I fix this?

A:Recent documents not working in Start Menu

Hello Higgins,

It sounds like some sort of issue with your jump lists. You could use the tutorial below to reset and clear jump lists to see if that may help. If you like, create a restore point before doing this. This way you could do a system restore back if it doesn't help, or you do not like the results.

Hope this helps,

I am struggle a lot with Windows 10 honestly.
So all of a sudden, Cortana stopped functioning and start menu stopped working.
I have tried all steps and tweaks available out there to fix the issue beside changing the profile and backing up the entire user because I can't risk doing that and lose my files.
So I tried restarting which Microsoft recommended including their start menu fix which resulted in nothing.
Tried powershell command, no changes yet.
Tried doing updates... NADA
Tried creating a local administrator user and nothing yet.
So I'm hoping there is someone who had similar issue and hopefully got that fixed.
Please help me out from this mess.

My computer was attacked by the System Fix Virus. I ran a program called Trojan Killer, but it wanted $40 to remove the virus, so I then ran Rkill and Malware bytes. It appeared as though the virus was removed after running those programs. I then ran Unhide which restored my desktop icons, but it did not restore my Start Menu icons. I looked and could not find the smtmp files to restore manually. I don't know how those files could have been deleted, because I didn't run a cleaner during the process. Could someone please help me find a way to restore the Start up icons?

I'm having a rather frustrating problem. When I click on any desktop or start menu icons, the apps won't launch. The apps appear in windows processes, but do not show in applications on the taskbar. If I right click them and use 'Run as administrator', they launch correctly. Items in control panel are behaving likewise. I can launch control panel, but am unable to elevate some of the commands to administrator status (no right click launch available).

Driving me crazy . Please help if you can....

Have you done a system restore to a time before the problems started?
Relevancy 74.82%

Hi I am new here so forgive me if this topic has already been covered I have looked through many posts but cannot find the answer to my problem Until recently I had jump lists appearing in my start menu but about a month ago I noticed that they had disappeared also when I tried to restore to an earlier point to fix this problem I found that all my restore points had disappeared except one and this was from my last windows upgrade I have tried the suggestion at one of the posts to delete any large files above MB found at quot AppData Microsoft Windows Recent AutomaticDestinations quot but this did not work and when I checked my file string it is the same to Recent but there is no AutomaticDestinations folder Under privacy in the properties of start menu and taskbar the Store and display in Start and taskbar checkbox is grayed out also in the customize window the quot Number of recent items to display in jump lists quot is also grayed out If there is an answer to my problem I would be very thankful I am including on Start working Lists Jump Menu not a copy Jump Lists not working on Start Menu of the Taskbar Properties and Customize Start Menu windows from my desktop

A:Jump Lists not working on Start Menu

Hello Dave, and welcome to Seven Forums.

It looks like your recent items has been disabled. You could use an option in the tutorial below to enable and turn back on recent items. Afterwards, your Jump Lists should start repopulating with recent/frequent items again as you open and close them.

I'm new to Windows 8 but not at all computer noob.

Since I turned on a new computer, SEARCH function is not working anywhere.

I can't enter the search mode in Explorer (CTRL+F or WIN+F does simply nothing) and when I go to Start menu screen and start typing, nothing happens. When I'm in Start menu and go to search it gives me no results no matter what I type - it just says: This app can't be searched. (as you can see below).

Could you please help?

Thanks in advance.

Hi all. When clicking on my desktop shortcuts nothing happens. The icons becomes highlighted, then nothing. Same thing with everything in the Start menu. Nothing will open out of there. Now, a few things will open when i click on them just on the desktop such as my yahoo messenger and Irfan View, and a few others, but the rest do nothing. My quick launch bar does work.

I defragged a couple of days ago. I have run 4 diffenert virus/spy/ad removal programs. I even reinstalled Windows XP the other day.

Can anyone help me??

How did you reinstall XP? Did you reformat and do a complete install or did you use one of the repair options?

If you did a new installation you will have to reinstall the programs.

Hey all, I need some help. I'm not very good with stuff, so hopefully someone has a solution for me?

My desktop and start menu shortcuts are not working at all. their all still there, although they just show up with a blank white icon. When I try to open something, it brings up a window with a list of programs asking me what I would like to use to run the application. Control panel, My computer, recycle bin, and a couple word files are fine. but things like itunes, google sketchup, firefox, ie will not work.

I've tried safe mode, system restore, and system maintenance with no luck..

does anyone know of a solution for this?

Thanks a lot!

I've added a explorer.exe that i've changed with Restorator 2007. When the install is done, the orb is invisible and when hovering over it, the mouseover effect works and i can se my custom orb though inverted and abnormal.

I would appreciate any thought, help or possible solutions to this, thanks a lot!

I installed the new Windows 8.1 Service Package 1 update earlier today. I was loving it. They finally got to addressing how bad Windows 8 was for laptops. However, the new context menu in the Start Screen simply does not appear anymore. It was earlier, and I have made no significant changes to the system in that time. When I right-click on a tile now, the only thing that happens is that it gets highlighted. No context menu to speak of. In addition, I can't get a context menu for the "Apps" section either.

A:New context menu in W8.1 SP1 in Start Screen not working

Well, I found out what was causing by playing with it more. Having a UXPatched theme in makes the context menu disappear. Most likely because they don't have any assets for them. I guess I can mark this as solved now.

Good day all.

This is a wonderful forum - great work guys keep it up.

I have a problem which suddenly reared its ugly head a few days ago with regards to desktop shortcuts and Start menu shortcuts (or .lnk) not running the associated application.

I have found the Regfix.reg fix for this but everytime I run the fix I get the error in the attached screenshot. I also ran a fix from Symantec called UnHookExec.inf to reset application .exe files to default - this fix can be found here:

How do I overcome this?

I am running Norton360 ver. 2 and the standard Vista security protection.

Any help is appreciated.

Well that's kind of a redundant title.. I'll explain it better down here. I have several programs pinned to the start menu for convenience sake and part of the convenience of pinning programs like Wordpad to the start menu is the dropdown submenus that some programs have. I could just scroll over Wordpad and open the document I want to like that. Now the dropdown menu isn't working so I have to open it first and maneuver from the C drive that I hardly even use to my D drive and several more folders inside. Now that's still not too bad, I know. But I miss my shortcuts. :c Anyone know why this might not be working?

To be extra clear, this is what I mean by "dropdown menu:"

A:Start Menu Dropdown Menus Not Working

Hello ZomBrony, and welcome to Seven Forums.

Do the menus open if you click on the arrow?

If so, then see if checking the Open submenus when I pause on them with the mouse pointer box in Customize Start Menu settings may help.

Hi there,

I'm still new to 7, but for some reason when I want to type a program name in Start Menu doesn't seem to work or doesn't find the program.

For example typing this is not coming up like on the screen below:
