Laptops - wifi speed slows after time

Q: Laptops - wifi speed slows after time

I really hope someone can help with this strange and annoying problem nbsp We have a fibre optic service which slows after Laptops - speed time wifi we always use via wifi almost nbsp new months amp months old HP Pavilion nbsp Laptops running Windows The router is Laptops - wifi speed slows after time in the same room as the laptops and is in clear sight of them All drivers are up to date and all Windows and HP updates have been installed nbsp Much of the time we receive our contracted speed of Mbps - which is fine But sometimes during the day our Download speed drops to about half although the Upload speed remains pretty constant at Mbps nbsp This does not happen on both the laptops at the same time so it doesn't seem as if it is related to wifi interference or overuse or to our ISP limiting the supply in any way nbsp It sometimes seems that on re-checking after hour the Mbps speed remains but after a longer period of time it drops to the lower speed nbsp It generally happens at least once per day nbsp The drop in speed can ALWAYS so far at least be corrected by Re-Starting whichever laptop has slowed nbsp It then opens with the full Mbps speed nbsp It has to be an actual Re-Start just shutting down and later opening up again does not correct the problem nbsp If the wifi broadband is running slow on shutdown at the end of a day then it will open up running slow the following morning But if it is running to proper speed on shut down then it opens up running at the correct speed nbsp I have tried both the MS troubleshooter and the HP Solution Centre but neither are finding anything wrong nbsp This is driving me to distraction please can anyone help nbsp

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/directdownload.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I have a home network with 3 computers and an Xbox360 and for years now I have never had a problem, but just recently the longer my modem goes without being turned off and back on the slower my internet gets, it applies to all the computers on the network and it has become quite a problem, the modem is a 2Wire2700HG-E Gateway that I got from Telus when I subscribed to their High speed enhanced.

(example day 1 I have 350kb/s download speeds and day 2 it will be as low as 40-120kb/s and it just gets lower and lower until I turn the modem off and back on)

Any help is appreciated, thanks!

I'd update the firmware on that modem/router, that would be my top suspect here.

I asked for help with this problem once before and did not get a fix --- so I am trying again Problem is network bandwidth as measured by the speed test s will decrease over time without any changes being made -- it does not matter what time of day Slows Network time Vista Speed over either It is a Vista PC running SP and hard wired to a Linksys router Wireless-G model and I am a Comcast customer with mbps service Maybe I should mention this PC sits idle Vista Network Speed Slows over time for most Vista Network Speed Slows over time of the day before the family comes home from school All of the XP systems in the house do NOT have this problem As you can see Vista Network Speed Slows over time over the course of days the download speed drops into the - mbps range and the upload speeds are greater than the download speeds The mbps measurement was taken after the reboot The only fix I have found is rebooting the machine --- then performance is as expected for a day or so before it starts to drop again Any and all suggestions welcome short of upgrading to Windows ---

Is this normal? Over a long period of time, my file transfer/copying speed slows down. For example, at the beginning it's 80-90 mb/s. Then like 5-10 mins later it goes to 30 mb/s or lower. I notice this for big files, not so much with smaller files.

I tried with my internal hard drive and the same hard drive in a enclosure via esata.

This is annoying especially you need to transfer over 100 GBs of data...

I notices this when copying/transferring files from my internal Seagate drive to my external WD drive and vice versa.

Have you done Checkdisk to see if there is any errors??

Welcome to Seven Forums,

I'd try fiddling with the router's wireless mode setting - usually on Mixed mode. Experiment - Set it to N (if available) or G/N or G. You may also fiddle with your Wi-Fi adapter's setting if available.

Hello Gurus

I have a Gateway E4600 PC with a Pentium 4 1.5GHz and 768 Rdram, Maxtor 120GB 7200 drive, Radeon 9200, SBLive and Windows XP.

When I test my hard disk drive data transfer rate with VoptXP I get 56MB/s. When I install Intel Application Accelerator drivers there is a downgrade to 36MB/s.

Is this normal? Is the drive transfer rate supposed to slow down? Am I missing something here? I await your words with bated breath

Mystified,

A:IAA slows disk speed down?

Ropey:

I didn't like using the IAA because it prevented me from installing Intel chipset updates and it removed the DMA settings for the primary and secondary IDE channel controllers.

If it's supposed to improve application performance, I didn't see it.

This is the log for a home built computer which has become incredibly slowwww... lately.
I have run (updated) Malwarebytes & Advances SystemCare, so I doubt it is malware. Most likely it is that too many programs are running in background.
Boot up time is incredibly slow. Especially when compated to another PC I recently built with similar specs.

I am on a point to point internet connection that is rated at 2mbps. With my PC connected directly to the modem or through an old Airlink101 (model AR680W) router typical DL speeds are 1.9 to 2.4 mbps. However the Airlink router has to be reset 2 to 3 times per day.

I am trying to replace this router, however every router I've tried cuts the download speed in half (about 0.9 to 1.3 mbps). So far I've tried two Ultra Speed wireless N routers; two D-Link DIR 615's; and one Linksys E1200. When I talk to their tech support after testing they say that the routers must be faulty, but what are the odds of getting 5 bad routers from 3 different manufactures.

My IP does not know of any compatability issues with any routers.

How can I solve this problem or is there a way to fix my old router. Thankyou

A:Router slows download speed to 1/2

For any of the routers make sure you have the latest firmware and then reset it to factory default settings.

Disable the router's wireless and test. Still slow?

Hi,

I have FiOS and their supplied wireless router Actiontec #: MI424WR. I have equipment that uses the newer N signal so I purchased a Linksys E3000 Wireless-N Router. This is working great for my wireless home theater equipment but I am having problems with my wired speed. It has gone from 20 to 30 mbps to around 10 mbps.

I have one of the LAN outputs on the Actiontec feeding the Linksys input, I have my computers plugged directly into the Linksys verses the Actiontec. This makes it easier to program the Linksys router. Since I am no longer using the wireless part of the Actiontec there really is no need to be plugged into it. Is there anything I can do get my speed back or will I have to plug the computer back into the Actiontec and move it every time I may need to make a change to the Linksys.

Thanks for your help!

First, Verizon FIOS doesn't provide as a fast internet as the say they do.As for the slow internet speed you can run a free internet speed test here: http://www.speedtest.net/.Also I suggest you change from linksys to net gear as i have them and im getting around 100 mbps.

Ok let me try to elaborate For the past few days I have been tethering to or WiFi Slows unresponsive. my desktop via my phone WiFi And the connection will seem to stop or slow And of course I figured it was the phone it self So I would restart the computer and it will work again I tried with two USB receivers and they WiFi Slows or unresponsive. would both do the same thing I updated the drivers on both of them From their manufacturers So today I got home internet and my desktop was downstairs and my router is upstairs So I connected wirelessly and it connected and after a few minutes it stoped loasing webpages but at that time I was on google voice and trying to open up youtube I was able to refresh google voice but unable to open youtube While this was going on I was on steam downloading an MB update And for some reason it WiFi Slows or unresponsive. was still going on but I was unable to open webpages So I stopped the download to see if it will affect it in anyway That was not the case it still wouldn't So at this point I am kind of stomped Any help will be most appreciative

A:WiFi Slows or unresponsive.

Hi there,

Just need some verification here, does your issue occurs when you are both tethering and using your wireless router?
Heavy usage of bandwidth would also add to the issue that you're experiencing and also interference from small electronics devices and nearby wireless neighbors that are using the same wireless channel as yours.
Might as well post a snip of Xirrus Wi-Fi Inspector by following the guide here.

Hello,
My installation of Firefox was running fine, then slowed down my internet connection to less than 1mbps. I have done clean install several times and installed an older version 3.6, then the newest version. I made a point of saving my profile folder (renamed so it didn't cause a conflict), but cleaning out all other files. The new install tests about 3+mbps and when I re-test a second time (within minutes) It is down to 1mbps. This happens over and over.
IE is installed and it consistently runs at 3+mbps. Can anyone suggest a solution?

Does anyone else have this problem, or even better has anyone had it and fixed it?

Problem is 2 laptops in the same house have different internet connection speeds when viewing the speed data in the Wireless connections tab.
1st laptop is an old acer (windows vista) and its running at 300mps to a virgin 50mb wireless router.
2nd laptop is a new dell xps running windows 7, corei7 etc but is only connecting at 144mps speed.

I cant figure out why this is the case as I would have thought they would both be the same. It means that the speed of the dell laptop is much slower than the acer.

Have noticed that when I'm downloading podcasts etc from itunes its stupidly slow on the dell.

Any idea on how to improve this would be greatly appreciated.

A:Alt-tabbing out of game slows mouse pointer speed

Well, I tried reversing the relationship between the game and desktop resolution. I set mouse pointer speed to the default, set my desktop to 800x600 and the game to 1680x1050, and kept alt-tabbing until fallout hung up again. After that, I was able to get the mouse pointer speed back up to a reasonable speed afterwards, but this is pretty inconvenient and unpredictable.

I use start 8 on both my windows 8.1 desktop and my tablet. My internet speeds were okay, but I wanted more. Based on the speed tests that I ran, it appeared to me that I was on Comcast's performance starter getting download speeds of 7.37mbps and uploads of 15.65. So I called Comcast to see about an upgrade. The tech that I spoke with stated that I already had the faster that they offer. He asked me how many icons did I have near the start button, I had 5, he told me to unpin them from the taskbar and my speeds went to DL - 57.48, the upload stayed pretty much the same 15.64. Just thought that I would pass this on. I don't know if this works for any other provider.

A:Icons pinned to taskbar slows internet speed

Say whaaaat? This is sure a new one on me. Maybe someone else can explain how this possibly could impact download speed. What were the shortcuts for? Anything dealing with the network?

I have a dell 32-bit running Insider Preview and nothing else.
I have an Acer 64-bit running Win 10 Home RTM and nothing else.

In my Dell, I was not able to connect Wifi after installing 14279.
Suggestion was to disable and then re-enable WiFi driver. That did not work. I went back to 14271.

So, I went to my Acer, enabled Get Insider Preview builds.
Today I got the update via Windows Update. After successful install and activated. WiFi was unable to connect.
Used the same suggestion, no avail.

This 14279 is the FIRST time I was unable to connect the WiFi.

It cannot be my computers, because they are of 2 different makes and models.
It cannot be my modem because I never have this problem .......... for 3 years.

The maddening part is............... I don't see any complaints from any forums on the same issue.
So, I can't blame MS either.
Damn !

A:WiFi not connected. It can't be my 2 laptops.

Hi All,

Apologies for a similar link but none of the other threads seem to work.

We have a cable modem and a Netgear WGR614 Router. The wifi works fine with 2 x Vista laptops, a Blackberry and a HP 5500 Wireless printer.

Our Dell Inspiron 6000 XP Laptop (which existed on this network before all the above devices) was working fine til last week and now won't connect unless on an ethernet into the Netgear router.

I've tried the standard winsock fix but it didn't work.

I can ping the router and ping websites from the cmd prompt but no browsing will take place. I get the usual cannot connect page from explorer. I've tried it on other open wifi networks nearby and it's the same. The wifi icon says Speed 54mbps Connection Excellent. I have DHCP enabled to auto on the router and all the laptops and we're running WEP 64 bit security.

Please help

A:1 out of 3 laptops won't browse through wifi

2 things to try, one, only do it if your experienced with it.

1. Take out the wireless card, and reconnect it, but make sure the laptop is unplugged and battery is out..

2. Reinstall the drivers for it. If you have already done so, my apologies, just wasn't stated.

Right now I have no other options, I'll think it over, if something comes to me I'll reply.

Hi,

I've got two very similar laptops (one Packard Bell, one Acer), both Windows 7, both Core i3, but even though they are next to each other, the Packard Bell (this one) is showing 5 bar (excellent) Wifi strength, and the Acer (the one that I really need for work) is only showing 1 bar (poor) or no connectivity. The router is in the building next door (10m away).

The Acer has the following network adapters:
-Atheros AR5B125 Wireless Network Adapter
-Microsoft Virtual Wifi Miniport Adapter

The Packard Bell:
-Realtek RTL8192CE Wireless LAN 802.11nPCI-E NIC

Any ideas? I'm at a loss!

post an xirrus screen shot for both PCs
------------------------------------------------------------------------
Run Xirrus Wi-Fi Inspector
Download and install
If you cannot access the internet with this PC, then you will need to copy the program across to the faulty PC
Save the file to a USB flash drive or other removable media. Plug it into the working computer with internet access and copy the file and install the program.
You will now need to take a screen shot and copy that back to the working PC and attach the screen shot in a reply on the forum here.

http://www.xirrus.com/Products/Wi-Fi-Inspector.aspx
Direct link to the program is here http://info.xirrus.com/Wi-FiInspectorConfirmation.html

{If the above link does not work heres another link http://www.pcworld.com/downloads/file_download/fid,77196-order,4/download.html}

Then run and install the program - on a wireless enabled PC/Laptop
if you get an error - You need will need to have NET Framework installed for the WiFi Inspector to function.
On windows 8 - (i do not have windows 8) but, it would appear that, When you first try to run, you may get a message that .net framework is needed, and included in that message is a link to download/install.

Run the program

A user guide is available here http://www.xirrus.com/cdn/pdf/Xirrus-Wi-Fi-inspectorguide-1-2-1-RevB-6.aspx

post a screen shot of the program running.
if there are a lot of networks showing can you click on "networks" top lefthand area - so we can see all the network information.

post which SSID name is yours, its located in the list, under network "Adapter Name" (1st column)

To post a screen shot of the active window.
1) hold the Alt key and press the PrtScn key. Open the Windows PAINT application (Start> All Programs> Accessories> Paint) and Paste the screen shot. You can then use PAINT to trim to suit, and save it as a JPG format file.
OR
2) if you are using Vista/Windows 7 you can use the "snipping tool" which is found in Start> All programs> Accessories> Snipping Tool

To upload the screen shot to the forum, open the full reply window ("Go Advanced" button) and use the Manage Attachments button to upload it here.
Full details are available here http://library.techguy.org/wiki/TSG_Posting_a_Screenshot

Note:
For a reliable (or robust as the Xirrus user guide says) wireless connection you need a signal of about -70 dBm or better. "A desirable signal level for a robust Wi-Fi connection will be green".
note: the signal level is a negative number, so for example -88 is worst and -40 is better

If you are using the Mac OS then use http://www.istumbler.net/ or
if you want to optimise base station position and signal strength / dead spots use
http://www.chimoosoft.com/products/apgrapher/ which has a graph function to monitor signal

I have the linksys WAP11 router and only one computer (laptop(MAC)) works on it at a time. I called Linksys but they say I have to pay $ to get the answer ( I am out of warranty period). Any advice. I am using two MAC's and have my modem connecting to my Wireless Access Point WAP11 wifi router.

A:How do I use 2 laptops on one wifi router?

It looks like the WAP11 is only an Access Point. Do you have a router connected as well? The router allows you to have mulitple computers online at the same time. Right now you are only connected through your modem, which allows 1 computer to connect at a time.

You need to get a router if you do not have one. Once you have a router, you can post back and we will help you set it up.

You can use connectify hotspot lite free version for this.
Connectify - Turn your PC into a Wi-Fi Hotspot and Get Faster Internet

Or you can set up a hosted wireless network manually using the guide in the link below.
http://winsupersite.com/article/faqt...ion-wirelessly

You can even use virtual router software to create a WiFi hotspot.

Yes. That's what routers do.
Your router will come with a setup program that should make this easy, but let us know if you have problems.

I have a pretty new laptop, 2.13 ghz AMD 2800+ processor. On the system properties screen it says it is only a 508 mhz processor, and yet in safe mode it says it is running at 2.13 ghz. I called the manufacturer and they said it runs at 508 mhz to preserve power. I am wondering if there is a way to change this and make the processor move faster... I have ordered some new ram for the machine as well, but I would like to see the processor work at its full potential. Any response is appreciated. Thanks!

However, Now the problem is, if you connect to WiFi through the laptop, irrespective of whether its charging or not, the internet becomes ridiculously slow. And if the wifi is off, it returns back to normal. Please help.

This is the strangest thing I've ever encountered.  If I shut the laptop lid, and connect to external keyboard, mouse and monitor my bandwidth, over wifi, drops from 20 MBPS +  to about 3 to 5 MBPS.  I've made changes to the power settings in the control panels in Windows 7 so it does nothing when the lid is shut.  I've checked the wifi card setting in the BIOS and it is all set and configured properly.  So, is this a defect or am I overlooking a hidden setting.  I mean its like clockwork - you start a speed test with the lid down....2-5 mbps, open it up and watch it run up to about 20!  Surely I am missing something.  Any advice is certainly appreciated.  Thank You!

I cant figure this one out some how over time windows will start to slow down for example adobe lightroom takes about seconds to open i don't know how long but after some time it will take like seconds or more and while loading it just does not look correct like black boxes that take time to get filled in This not only impacts loading of applications but the application its self becomes very slow Task manager shows minimal CPU usage same with ram its not all in use Grabing the window and resizing it looks horrible things flash over slows down windows time 8.1 in and out of place and areas take few seconds to get filled back in Restarting the system fixes this and i found the restarting explorer exe instantly brings back the performance but i am getting annoyed doing this every time explorer exe uses less then cpu and around mb of ram at the time of the performance issues and i don't understand how restarting it brings back performance or how it affects performance in the windows 8.1 slows down over time first place when it does not use much cpu in the first place CPU i k OC to ghz i did test out just running at stock same problem Motherboard is P P WS REVOLUTION RAM gb GPU GTX does anyone have a idea whats going on i am getting so annoyed i think i will go back to windows or even get learn to use a MAC i really need this get fixed as i use this PC for work Thanks

I know that this must be a common question, but I searched and didn't find anything.

Recently my XP machine has been running sow.
Slow to the point that it takes a good 20-30 seconds to bring up a right-click menue by which time the right click menue usually times out so that I have to right click it again.
Everything else is slow too, documents come up slower, response time is slower.
It's just slow.

So I defragmented my HD, scanned for viruses, and went got rid of all unnecesary tasks that were running in the background.

It didn't help.

Not only am I frusterated with my slow system, I am utterly confused as to what the computer is spending it's time doing.

If some one could at least explain why this problem keeps occuring in every computer I've ever owned if not what to do about it.

Thank you.

A:Windows slows down over time. Why?

Hi!

While I can't say for sure what the problem is (it's windows... nobody can be certain ), from experience the system slows down because more and more programs and services are being run in the background. What you can do to fix this is to run msconfig:

Start>Run>msconfig

Under msconfig, look under the tab marked startup. That's where most unnecessary programs reside. All you have to do is uncheck the unnecessary ones, and the system should significantly speed up. When you reboot the system, just ignore tha message. But remember what you changed so that if necessary you can change it later.

Hope this helps

A:Old game slows down with time

Is that 89 Celcius or Fahrenheit? It's that Celcius then that is way to high and no doubt your issue. That's 192 Fahrenheit anything over 120F (49C) should be considered boarding on too hot.

You say you downgraded to XP and in that process probably lost the some functionality that helps crontrol the CPU and requlates temps. If it's heating up that fast in that short of time then it's likely the fans aren't keeping speed with the CPU.

First, we usually tell people that if this thing is still under warranty then contact seller and tell them of your issues. A10 chips are good chips.

Second, do you have a cooling pad? Heat can cause this issue.

When I start-up my computer and log in the first thing I see pop-up is a CMD box, and a few seconds later my Google Chrome open with either hxxp:// play-toolbar.org/ or hxxp:// adverttraff.org/. I have looked all around the internet and seen companies requesting a minimum of $70 for a one time fix to get rid of these kind of things manually, I have tried using Avast, IOBIT Advanced System Care, Bitdefender and Malware Bytes, and none of this software has cleared my problem, I have done multiple scans with all of them. I need to fix and remove this issue.
Thanks in advance

Sure you can. You configure the two for Ad-Hoc communications.

My older brother and I recentely bought the HP Spectre XT ultrabook and I've started noticing that my laptop seems to be alot slower when connected to the WIFI. Using the cable works fine but as soon as I switch back to the wireless, it has this tendency to work for a minute or two at 5-4 bars (signal strength) and then suddenly drop to 2 bars slowing the connection significantly. This happens ALL the time making it extremely frustruating for me to browse the internet. I know it's my laptop that's in fault as I had the same problem when using a different wireless at a friends house. I'm not very good with this kind of problems so any help would be greatly appreciated!

A:2 identical laptops, 2 different WIFI speeds HELP!

Run Xirrus Wi-Fi Inspector
Download and install
If you cannot access the internet with this PC, then you will need to copy theprogram across to the faulty PC
Save the file to a USB flash drive or other removable media. Plug it into theworking computer with internet access and copy the file and install theprogram.
You will now need to take a screen shot and copy that back to the working PCand attach the screen shot in a reply on the forum here.

If you do not have another PC - do you have a phone connected to the internet -can you photograph the result and post the image in a reply

http://www.xirrus.com/Products/Wi-Fi-Inspector.aspx( the site now appears to require a business email, so try the direct linkbelow)
Direct link to the program is here http://info.xirrus.com/Wi-FiInspectorConfirmation.html

{If the above link does not work heres alternative links

http://www.pcworld.com/downloads/fil.../download.html

http://www.softpedia.com/progDownloa...oad-99109.html

http://download.cnet.com/Xirrus-Wi-F...-75758254.html}

Then run and install the program - on a wireless enabled PC/Laptop
if you get an error - You need will need to have NET Framework installed for the WiFi Inspector tofunction.
On windows 8 - (i do not have windows 8) but, it would appear that, When youfirst try to run, you may get a message that .net framework is needed, andincluded in that message is a link to download/install.

Run the program

A user guide is available here http://www.xirrus.com/cdn/pdf/Xirrus...-1-RevB-6.aspx

post a screen shot of the program running.
if there are a lot of networks showing can you click on "networks" top lefthand area - so wecan see all the network information.

post which SSID name is yours, itslocated in the list, under network "AdapterName" (1st column)
Note:
For a reliable (or robust as the Xirrus user guide says) wireless connectionyou need a signal of about -70 dBm or better. "A desirable signal levelfor a robust Wi-Fi connection will be green".
note: the signal level is a negative number, so for example -88 is worst and-40 is better

To post a screen shot of the active window.
Windows XP
Hold the Alt key and press the PrtScn key. Open the Windows PAINT application(Start> All Programs> Accessories> Paint) and Paste the screen shot. You can then use PAINT to trim to suit, and save it as a JPG format file.

Vista or Windows 7
you can use the "snipping tool" which is found in Start> Allprograms> Accessories> Snipping Tool
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/tuto...snipping-tool/

To upload the screen shot to the forum, open the full reply window ("GoAdvanced" button) and use the Manage Attachments button to upload it here.
Full details are available here http://library.techguy.org/wiki/TSG_...g_a_Screenshot

Also let us know the basic specs of your computer by DL this tool and then copy and paste the specs into your next post here as well.

hey everyone,
I have a:
CenturyLink C1000A wireless router/modem
xbox360
ps3
2x android phone
2x winxp laptops (sp2, sp3)
i can connect all of these devices using the default settings and key except for the 2 winxp laptops. They both detect the network, let me type in the key, but then get stuck at "waiting for network" screen. eventually that screen closes without connecting. im currently online with the sp2 wired directly to the router. any ideas or recommendations?
i can provide more information if anyone thinks it will help, and thanks in advance for any ideas.

A:laptops wont connect to wifi

Install SP3 on the way-out-of-date machine.

For the one that already has SP3 ...

Please attach a screen shot of the Networks page (don't collapse the Radar, Connection or Signal History) of the Xirrus Wi-Fi Inspector. If you need help with that see TSG Posting a Screenshot. FWIW to take screen shots with Windows 7 or Vista I prefer to use the built-in Snipping Tool.

Identify your network and also show ...

Open a (black) Command Prompt window:
Hold the Windows logo key and press r; in the Run box type cmd and click on OK.

Type the following command:

IPCONFIG /ALL

[Note that there is no space between the slash and ALL.]

Right click in the command window and choose Select All, then hit Enter.
Paste the results in a message here.

If necessary use a text file and removable media to copy the results to a computer with internet access.

2 days ago both of my laptops stopped connecting to my wifi. One of them is toshiba satellite A200 and the other one is Lenovo z575. What happened is that after I turned them on, the name of my wifi does not appear in the list of available wireless networks (other networks appear though). Both laptops work when I connect them to the router's LAN. also my iPad and my housemates' laptops do recognize the wifi and work properly. I tried rebooting the modem and the router several times, I tried reinstalling and updating the wifi adapter too. None has worked. I checked the SSID for the router and it is fine. So I guess the modem and router are fine and the problem should be with my laptops. I have installed bitdefender total protection on the lenovo to check for any malware and it says the alptop is clean. Can anyone suggest any solutions for this?

Hi everyone, I have two laptops and one of them the WiFi card dose not work, and i like to go on the internet in my room, is there a way to get WiFi sent to my laptop that dose not have WiFi like would i us a cross over cable, my laptop goes on the net only hard wired from the modem in my living room. They both have windows 7, please help me, i know there's a way i just don't know how to do that. thanks.

A:I have two laptops and one of them the wifi card does not work

Have you tried troubleshooting the wifi card? Could be drivers or software causing a conflict.

Things you could obtain, a USB wifi card, modem to split the network, new wifi card.

I've never tried this before but you could try sharing your network. This thread may be of some use. Else google 'laptop share network'.

Hello,And welcome to BleepingComputer.com, before we can assist you with your question of: Am I infected? You will need to perform the following tasks and post the logs of each if you can.Malwarebytes Anti-MalwareNOTEMalwarebytes is now offering a free trial of their program, if you want to accept it you will need to enter some billing information, so that at the end of the trial you would be charged the cost of the product. For instructions with screenshots, please refer to the How to use Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware Guide. When the installation begins, follow the prompts and do not make any changes to default settings. When installation has finished, make sure you leave both of these checked:Update Malwarebytes' Anti-MalwareLaunch Malwarebytes' Anti-MalwareThen click Finish.MBAM will automatically start and you will be asked to update the program before performing a scan.If an update is found, the program will automatically update itself. It may take some time to complete so please be patient. When the scan is finished, a message box will say "The scan completed successfully. Click 'Show Results' to display all objects found".Click OK to close the message box and continue with the removal process.Back at the main Scanner screen:Click on the Show Results button to see a list of any malware that was found.Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected. When removal is completed, a log report will open in Notepad. The log is automatically saved and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.Copy and paste the contents of that report in your next reply. Be sure to post the complete log to include the top portion which shows MBAM's database version and your operating system.Exit MBAM when done.Note: If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be asked to reboot your computer so MBAM can proceed with the disinfection process. Half the true speed so what is the problem do you guys think?

A:Does Windows Xp Have Trouble Reading Processor Speed For Laptops

My old Latitude C400 had a power conservation option in the BIOS which would dynamically change the CPU's speed depending on the system load, this would help the battery life somewhat. Check you manual and the BIOS for such an option.

I noticed my computer speed had slowed when online or playing games where I would notice high ping. I checked my task manager and found iexplore.exe having 5 processes open using up around 90% of my CPU and 80% of my Physical Memory. I scanned with Malwarebytes and it found nothing wrong, AVG found nothing and when I checked with MSE is said it had removed the virus. To my pleasure iexplore.exe had disappeared but now it is the same thing, slowing down my computer to points where I can barely open a folder, but the process name being explorer.exe. I am using Windows 7.
Heres how it usually looks in my task manager.

At around 2:30 PM each day, the internet slows down, and it says its connected but with limited access. A few minutes later, it gets full connection again, but it is super slow, then the same cycle starts over again. It stops happening around 8:00 PM.

A:Internet connection slows down at the same time each day.

Is this a wireless connection? If so, could it be a nearby neighbor turning on their wireless access point on the same or adjacent channel as yours?

If it is a wireless connection, are you using WPA encryption to stop uninvited users off the network?

Hi all I m having a bit of a trouble with home All Laptop other One find WiFi, can't laptops can my eMachines netbook M I was going to contact their customer support but for some reason their services kept One Laptop can't find home WiFi, All other laptops can telling me that quot One Laptop can't find home WiFi, All other laptops can That serial number is not in our database quot I m hoping you guys can help me I have laptops and a desktop PC Two of my laptops are connected through wireless and my Desktop PC through a cable Now this small isnt finding the wireless network my other computer are connected One Laptop can't find home WiFi, All other laptops can to It has found all other wireless networks tons of them neighbors city wifi etc but just cant find my home wifi I have reinstalled windows XP and reinstalled the wireless drivers Also checked that they re the newest out there EDIT I found a solution to this problem Once I changed the Channel Selection settings from my router from Auto to out of My laptop could find the wifi After changing it back to quot Auto quot it loses the connection to the wifi The quot Auto quot selection chooses channel which is the channel with the least noise according to the channel scanner of the router Is there any cause to worry that I have chosen Channel Why cant my laptop find the wifi when the router is set to Channel Thanks dertzi nbsp

A:One Laptop can't find home WiFi, All other laptops can

the US are only allowed to use channel 1 to 11 and some machines sold still have that restriction - Europe can use 1-13 - hence the router is switching to 13

there maybe a setting in the wireless adapter properties to allow you to use channels 12 & 13 (Japan are allowed to use 14)

goto device manager and network adapters and right click on the adapter - choose properties and see if anything there helps

Lets see the wireless networks and channels in use - use xirrus and post a screen shot

channels 1, 6 and 11 are the most common used, as they do not overlap - so wee need to look at signals greater than -80 and see what channels are in use around you

If you do not have another PC - do you have a phone connected to the internet - can you photograph the result and post the image in a reply

http://www.xirrus.com/Products/Wi-Fi-Inspector.aspx
Direct link to the program is here http://info.xirrus.com/Wi-FiInspectorConfirmation.html

{If the above link does not work heres another link http://www.pcworld.com/downloads/file_download/fid,77196-order,4/download.html}

Note:
For a reliable (or robust as the Xirrus user guide says) wireless connection you need a signal of about -70 dBm or better. "A desirable signal level for a robust Wi-Fi connection will be green".
note: the signal level is a negative number, so for example -88 is worst and -40 is better

To post a screen shot of the active window.
Windows XP
Hold the Alt key and press the PrtScn key. Open the Windows PAINT application (Start> All Programs> Accessories> Paint) and Paste the screen shot. You can then use PAINT to trim to suit, and save it as a JPG format file.

Vista or Windows 7
you can use the "snipping tool" which is found in Start> All programs> Accessories> Snipping Tool
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/tutorials/how-to-use-the-windows-snipping-tool/

Windows 8
you can use the snipping tool > Open Snipping Tool (From the Windows 8 Start Screen, type "snip" and press enter.
>Press the Esc. key.
>go back to your Windows 8 start screen - Swipe from left or press Window Button
>Press Ctrl+PrntScr button to use Snipping Tool

I spent last week in a ski hotel in the French Alps with terrible overloaded WiFi Back home now but I d like to understand the issues and I m still in email contact with the hotel Now most of the young guests laptops not WiFi but hotel mobiles for working and staff had an IPhone or similar and a tablet or a laptop so hotel WiFi working for mobiles but not laptops it was always going to be slow The general symptoms were that phones could get WiFi connectivity most of the time but laptops and netbooks could not This applied to me with a Samsung N netbook and people with much more modern and expensive laptops and sitting in the bar about feet from the router or even complaining at reception where we could see the router feet away On the other hand mobile use was patchy but worked most of the time even for my old Nokia N when the netbook next to it could not get in The only way to get laptop or netbook connection was for one of us to go to reception and insist they power cycled the router Then when it came back up we could get in and the connections worked for about an hour before we lost the connection and could not get back in The link was slow but is probably ADSL and I could at least read my email The network was n and running WPA -PSK My netbook is n and running Windows Vista but all other laptops seemed to have the same issue When failing the laptop was saying quot unable to connect quot and ipconfig all had nothing I think it was failing at the WPA level because a couple of times it got quot limited access quot with quot Autoconfiguration IPv Address Preferred quot and by configuring in an IP address I managed to get useful internet connection for mins or so I chose an address in the subnet above the DHCP range So my question is why do mobiles do better and assuming the answer is that they try harder is there anything that you can change on a laptop to increase the timeouts or the number of retries Since I like the ski package I will probably go again - I might try dual booting a Linux and getting the driver source Any other suggestions My suggestions to the hotel are to try to reduce the router range so it only works in the bar area rather than throughout most of the hotel Since they post the password on the wall of the bar with public access I m not sure their security buys them anything - anyone who wants access can get it So I wonder if turning off the security would help a lot I know lots about TCP IP and nothing about WPA - I suspect that it also prevents eavesdropping but if you don t read your email and do your banking with https you deserve to be eavesdropped The guests were English and almost all turned roaming off on their mobiles because of the high costs - so they were using the hotel WiFi Thanks for any suggestions nbsp

A:hotel WiFi working for mobiles but not laptops

Based on the limited information presented, it looks like the wireless router is just plain overloaded. Depending on the number of wireless clients we're talking about here will probably dictate a more robust system. For commercial purposes, using a SOHO wireless router is just asking for issues like this.

I have a Windows 2008 R2 domain and windows 7 enterprise/pro Laptops. I'm totally stumped on this issue.

I have a handful of users when the users have their laptop wired they can logon to the domain quickly and arrive at the desktop screen without issue.

The WIFI is Radius hosted by the DC and the signal is strong to the router and ping to the PC at stuck at logon is usually 1-3ms.

When they are wireless the computers hang at the welcome screen it can last for over 30 minutes. If I plug the Ethernet cable into the laptop within 10 seconds it finishes logging into the Laptop and is sitting at the desktop screen. I've tried removing GPP
for drives, I've tried limiting GP scripts to 10 seconds, I turned on verbose for startup and shutdown and tried KB2525332.

I'd like to post a trace but my account needs to be verified...

hi to everyone. my asus laptop model is N53S and its been disconnecting the wifi connection about 3 month. i dont think the problem is from router because all other devices like android phones and laptops are connected and working properly. my laptop used to disconnect every time that it was hit or i moved it.but now it is disconnected randomly about 5 or 6 times a day even if i dont move it. when its disconnected sometimes the red cross or a yellow triangle appears on the wifi connection and windows functions so slowly and noises starts everytime i try to hear anything. i have tried re installing the wireless adapter in the device manager but it havent been fixed. do you think the wireless adapter should be replaced? what is its problem?

My roommate and I are getting internet next month, and she wants to plug her desktop directly into the modem. There will also be a router plugged into the modem, so we can use our laptops wirelessly.

I know actual internet speeds can depend on several factors, but my question is: if she is directly plugged into the modem and downloading something, will that affect my internet speed moreso than if her desktop was wireless and downloading something?

I have few laptops some are newer some are older some are stronger some are weaker But I have some impression that all of them are getting slower over time And I'm asking what is going on Is it because of actualizations of Windows systems Are they getting heavier Or is it something wrong with hardware of the laptops I have for example one Acer with RAM and when i bought it it slower does in Why laptops time? go was working fine with the system and applications Now I hardly can run fresh restored system on this computer few applications and it is practically not working The same is with two Toshibas that I have One is one is G it was quite much for XP few years ago now they are working but they are getting noticeably slower I don't think it's just an impression so maybe someone can explain me what is wrong here PS Sorry for my English please correct me in my mistakes to help me improve the language

A:Why does laptops go slower in time?

Hi mate

The notebook don?t get slower?

First of all the notebooks are different from desktop PCs.
The notebook uses additional features like control buttons, fn buttons, some kind of other features like gesture control, etc?.
There are a lot of processes which are running all the time in the background and waste the hardware resources?

Furthermore the new software and applications needs more and more hardware resources? such software is not comparable with other applications developed 10 years ago?

Last but not least the installed OS gets slower due to the trash and rubbish on the HDD?
During the usage of system you will recessive updates, would installed some other tools and utilities which change the registry. This affects the performance of the system as well?

So slimily said there are a lot of factors which could affect the system performance and this is nothing unusual?

You could use an system cleaner called CCLeaner. It?s for free. I use it too.
Furthermore you should defragment the HDD from time to time? this helps too?

A:System slows down BIG TIME and Deleting a File

Are you sure your pc is totally malware free?
I would start firstly with thoroughly checking your pc for any adware/spyware or viruses.
Download some of the many free ones available and after updating them fully scan the pc. Not all security programs find all rogue files!

www.download.com
This site is a good place to download the likes of :
Ad-aware free edition
Spybot search and destroy
Microsofts Windows defender
AVG Anti virus

(All these are free apps).

If it appears that your pc is clean then consider any changes you have made to the pc before this began. Have you installed any third party browser add-ons/plugins/helper objects ??
Some of these can cause such problems with IE

A:Help!! Connect 2 laptops directly w/ethernet w/1 laptop wifi

After connecting them together by ethernet enable Internet Connection Sharing (ICS) on the wireless connection that has internet access. You can probably also bridge the wireless and ethernet connections, but to say that I'm making the assumption that you are not restricted to only one IP address on your free Wi-Fi. I haven't given any more details, since I assume this will jog your memory of which you did yesterday.

Are you browsing while sharing/transfering files? That would definitely cause it.

My MTU is at default of 1500..
Any more details needed please ask..
I have been experiencing spikes after minutes of stable connection.
Shown by slow browsing speed, greatly slowed download speed from 100+kb to 30/15kb and slower online video/audio streaming.
I have to restart my computer often to get rid of this menace lately, is there any alternative way to this because this is getting really irrtating.

I just purchased a new Dell XPS 17.3" Laptop. It worked great, running on the wifi internet about 15/mbps. Then it automatically began downloading and installing windows updates. It took over 10 hours to install the updates. After that it ran at 1-2/mbps! I restored to a previous time (prior to the updates) and it great worked again. Then Windows Update installed again. It installed over 75 updates, but in just a half hour. Then it slowed again. I restored again and now I have turned off Windows Update.

How do I fix this?

I'm still within Best Buy's warranty period. Should I return it? I'd prefer to fix it, I've already transferred all my data.

Thanks for your help. -N

A:Every time I install Windows Update my computer slows way down

you could return it and get a replacement--then bring it home and see if the same thing happens--that would eliminate the 'machine' as the source of the problem.

you could read the description of each update to see if one or more could be the cause of the problem (in my experience, windows 'security' updates have a bad habit of changing settings on a machine--for security reasons--that's why I, personally, keep windows updates turned off) of course reading all the white papers will take a lot of time.

you could just leave 'updates' turned off--although most people will disagree with this decision--I, myself, turned off windows updates right after I installed the OS and have 'never' had a problem--but I maintain my anti virus and anti malware apps and always pay attention to what my machine is doing (am a bit OCD)...so...that's all the advice I can offer.

Hello shadowvalar and welcome to BleepingComputer!

My name is Sirawit and I'm here to help you.

Please note that I'm currently in training and my fixes need to be approved first, that may delay our fix a bit, but I will normally reply back in 24 hours.

If I don't reply after 3 days, feel free to PM me.
==========================================================================Some points for you to keep in mind:
Backup any files that cannot be replaced. Removing malware can be unpredictable and this step can save a lot of heartaches if things don't go as planned. You can put them on a CD/DVD, external drive or a pen drive, anywhere except on the computer.
We ask you to run different tools in a specific order to ensure the malware is completely removed from your machine, and running any additional tools may detect false positives, interfere with our tools, or cause unforeseen damage or system instability.
Please do not run any tools or take any steps other than those I will provide for you while we work on your computer together. I need to be certain about the state of your computer in order to provide appropriate and effective steps for you to take. Most often "well intentioned" (and usually panic driven!) independent efforts can make things much worse for both of us. If at any point you would prefer to take your own steps please let me know, I will not be offended. I would be happy to focus on the many others who are waiting in line for assistance.
Do not attach logs or use code boxes, just copy and paste the text.
Periodically update me on the condition of your computer, and provide detail in every post.
In the upper right hand corner of the topic you will see the  button. Click on this then choose Immediate E-Mail notification and then Proceed and you will be sent an email once I have posted a response.
If you do not reply to your topic after 5 days we assume it has been abandoned and I will close it.
Once things seem to be working again, please do not abandon the thread. I will give an "all-clean" message at the very end with some additional information on how to stay malware-free.
Lastly, I would like to remind you that most members here are volunteers, and sometimes "real life" can get in the way of our malware hunt. I will notify you if I know I will need to be away for longer than 48 hours.

Using more than one anti-virus program is not advisable. Why? The primary concern with doing so is due to Windows resource management and significant conflicts that can arise especially when they are running in real-time protection mode simultaneously. Even if one of them is disabled for use as a stand-alone on demand scanner, it can affect the other and cause conflicts. Anti-virus software components insert themselves deep into the operating systems core where they install kernel mode drivers that load at boot-up regardless of whether real-time protection is enabled or not. Thus, using multiple anti-virus solutions can result in kernel mode conflicts causing system instability, catastrophic crashes, slow performance and waste vital system resources. When actively running in the background while connected to the Internet, each anti-virus may try to update their definition databases at the same time. As the programs compete for resources required to download the necessary files this often can result in sluggish system performance or unresponsive behavior. When scanning engines are initiated, each anti-virus may interpret the activity of the other as suspicious behavior and there is a greater chance of them alerting you to a "false positive". If one finds a virus or a suspicious... Read more

hello, i'm been using an HP laptop for a year now, and now i'm having this issue with my intel core i-7 5500U speed lock. sometimes it's normal, going between 2.5-2.7 GHz.. but at times and for no reason what so ever. it goes down to 0.15 GHz, yes. that low and i don't even know why, please help me if possible

A:my laptop's core speed is decreasing from time to time

Hi Haz,Laptops do this for power savings when the OS Doesent demand a high Prosessor speed. If you would like it to be high all the time and get better performance you can goStart Menu>Control Panel>Power Options>Then tap on High Performance and beside that press "Change Plan Settings">Then press "Change advanced power settings">Now go down to the prosessor power management section and expand it>Then goto "Minimum Prosessor State" and put it to 100% If this has helped please let me know!

Hello,

I just recently purchased a laptop. I am probably going to use it as my primary computer, seeing as it is better than my Desktop at the moment. My question is, does it overcharge the battery, or hurt the laptop to keep it plugged in all day, running?

Hi,

Is there a way to find the screen on time for your device running windows 10?

If there is no built in way to do this, is there any 3rd party program that can measure screen on time (SOT measures how many hours your screen is on as a way of testing battery life)

Thanks in advanced for the help!

A:How to find screen on time (SOT) on windows laptops

Not heard of SOT with regard to PCs before.

Uptime is a measure of time elapsed since the OS was started.

It can be seen at the bottom of the TaskManager Performance CPU tab.

SOT usually refers to always-on devices like Mobile Phones - where the battery life is more heavily drained when the screen is on.

I know the best time to buy a computer is never but unfortuantely I must get a laptop.

I was just wondering if there is any MAJOR technology that will bring down the prices of laptops SIGNIFICANTLY within the next month - 1 1/2 months.

The only reason I'm asking is the pentium D a few years back was around $100 cheaper once centrino came out and I don't want to jump that sort of a gun..

Thanks

when i restart my comp it takes a long time to come too, and when it does it may freeze or take a very long time to load

ive gone into safe mode and run clean up and checked my hijackthis log and everything looks clean.

spyware appz show nothing either

any suggestions as to why its taking so long to load up and why it freezes while loading?

A:comp slows down and takes long time to load/freezes

Try doing a clean boot to see if it is a problem with one of the programs that loads at start up. Take a look at the link below to see how to do a clean boot. Let us know if this fixes the problem or not. This will better help to determine if it is hardware or software issue.

...maybe HP doesn't want to show how long will their battery last in their laptops?
Why don't they release updated drivers/bios to correct this?

Here is how it should be (Acer, Dell, Lenovo etc. laptops do, I've read):

I want to leave it there day and night, I'll connect it to the laptop when I need to charge the laptop. The reason being is to avoid sparks/arcs that occur whenever I connect the adapter to the outlet. Is this a safe/good idea? Thanks

A:Is it ok to leave my laptops ac adapter plugged in the wall outlet all the time?

If you plug the adapter into the wall before you plug it into the computer, you won't have to worry about the sparks.

Hi Guys,
Have an issue with my internet speed, I am currently subscribed with an ISP for 60Mb/s Connection and I can only get that speed via cable over wifi it goes down to 26Mb/s, after I called my ISP they told me I had to buy some other wifi device that extendes my signal and is able to transmit more then 26MB/s so I bought a NetGear EX6100 Wifi Range Extender and set it up as an access point on the 5GHz channel it is currently connected via cable with the ISP Router but still im only getting 26Mb/s.
Im stuck what did I do wrong ???

A:Wifi Speed

My cable service plan is for 150 Mbps download.

I get 150 - 170 Mbps on ethernet and 30 - 50 Mbps on wireless.

I've tweaked my wireless connection as much as I can and still get the much slower speed.

It's still fast enough for my needs, so I've learned to live with it.
