Zone Alarm update failing

Q: Zone Alarm update failing

I'm still using XP Pro, SP3, with a P4 CPU @ 1.8 GHz, 2 G of Ram. I recently installed the free trial version of Zone Alarm AV and Firewall. It's been prompting me to update (I thought it did that automatically, oh well), so I clicked on "update" and it starts to download, and fails repeatedly.

Preferred Solution: Zone Alarm update failing

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Have been getting windows opening from Zone Alarm telling me to replace the version I have.
In the end I did ,and it failed to recognise it's own updates or let me switch the antivirus on.
I then uninstalled it from the PC, and went to their website and downloaded their latest version.
within 30 minutes away it is throwing up the same window asking me to replace it with  the latest version. The attached pic is what I get with that latest version. I am about to go through all this on my laptop too, Should I ignore the adds to update?.

A:Is Zone alarm (free) still safe? It keeps failing and wanting to replace the latest version.

Thanks all, I'll just stay clear of Zone Alarm from now on.
I liked the layout and functional way it's firewall worked, especially in regards to installed software, but it is now too much of a risk, and there are others out there.
I'm happy with Avast AV and Comodo FW.
Both Avast and Widows defender say there are not the two viruses the Zone Alarm one was saying was there.
You may consider this thread concluded, as I cannot see the point of continuing with Z/A while there has been a failure and others are just as free.

Hello and welcome to Techspot

Am I to assume that Z.A is Zone Alarm?

If so have you tried uninstalling and reinstalling the programme?

Also would you please fill in your system specs including which OS you are using in user profile at the top of any page click on edit profile.

Hoping I'm in the right forum...[I'm somewhat above a door knob on PC problems but can follow directions pretty well ]

Using XPpro 2002 with IE on pentium 4

I keep getting message to update to Zone Alarm 6.5 to the next version
After checking other forums [not as member] I read many horror stories of how it messes up the PC and has to be uninstalled etc. - So I keep saying remind me later

Believe it or not I'm still on dialup- so all downloads take forever
so don't want to chance getting into a black hole with ZA -

Anyone have any tips or info on why ZA is so risky and is it even worth having?

Thanks for help on this

I have Zone Alarm Free Firewall installed on my PC, which has been fine. I recently up dated the firewall and since then I have encountered a couple of problems. I have Windows XP and I usually use Google Chrome as my search engine, however the home page has been changed to Zone alarm search, I have removed the toolbar, no difference. I then uninstalled Zone Alarm but the home page remains on my PC. How can I revert back to my original homepage? Also my PC will freeze if unused for awhile and I can do nothing but reboot and start again, could this be linked to Zone Alarm?
I also have AVG anti virus installed, I have not added Zone Alarm anti virus.

Many Thanks.

Yesterday my PC - running XP SP2 - did some (unknown) automatic Windows updates before it shut down. Today neither IE7 not Outlook Express will access even my router, let alone the Internet, unless ZoneAlarm is turned off - yet I can ping the router or Internet sites quite easily. There is no problem if Windows firewall is turned on instead.

I have a wired Ethernet connection to a D-Link broadband router.

Overview: A security vulnerability exists in specific versions of ZoneAlarm®, ZoneAlarm Pro, ZoneAlarm Plus and the Zone Labs Integrity™ client. This vulnerability is caused by an unchecked buffer in Simple Mail Transfer Protocol (SMTP) processing which could lead to a buffer overflow. In order to exploit the vulnerability without user assistance, the target system must be operating as an SMTP server. I've had a number of calls today of people not being able to get to the internet.
I have found that all had Zone Alarm and it has been determined the issue is a result of recent MS Security update which is affectin Zone-Alarm.

If you think you have this issue you can disable Zone-Alarm temporarily and then test whether you can get access. If not - your issue may be something else and would be worth starting your own seperate thred.

See Link here at Zone Alarm Thread.

A:Firefox won't connect since I downloaded latest Zone Alarm update!

I would recommend that you run a separate virus scan and any other scans that you have such as Spyware, Adware, etc. When you run these scans I would recommend that you turn your Zone Alarm firewall off and turn windows firewall on. This will protect you for the little bit that you are running the scans. Then when you are all done see what the outcome is. Then we can move on from there.

You might want to also look at the Security section under the Advanced tab in Internet Properties to see if you may have locked out the installation by demanding signed programs, etc.

I have gone through all the steps to clean and protect my computer (Windows XP Dell) and thought I was really clever. Took me best part of a day. However, my partner can't now connect to the internet from his laptop, (also running Windows XP), and I am about to fall asleep trying to suss out how to find the IP address of the laptop to add to the trusted zone of Zone Alarms: which keeps flashing up messages that various addresses are trying to access my ports!! Help, before I lose all credibility. My computer is now trussed up like a turkey, and I am about to become single again. A:Unable To Add Laptop To Trusted Zone In Zone Alarm

I'm in the same situation, and have learned a few things. Go to Start > Run >cmd. In the black box, type ipconfig. This will give you the ip address of the computer you're on, as well as the gateway ip address of the wireless router. I also have zonealarm firewall, so I added the ip address to the trusted zone. You may also want to check your wireless router's info because depending on the security you've set, it may ask you for a code (WEP or WPA). Let's start here and see what happens. Sounds like this will be one for many inputs...

Hello slyblackdragon,I see you have an open HJT log posted in the HijackThis Logs and Malware Removal forum. You shouldn't make any changes to your system, while your HJT log is posted, as that could change the results of the posted log, making it difficult to properly clean your system. At this point, the HJT Team should be the only members that you take advice from, until they have verified your log as clean.I'm closing this topic until you are cleared by the HJT Team. Zone Alarm is a good program and I have used it for quite some time now. But, yesterday I upgraded to the latest version 3.1 ( I believe) and I had nothing but problems with my system from the 1st minute I started trying to use it.

The best version they came out with was 2.6.362 and I will never upgrade again.

Trust me once I did the upgrade nothing worked right on my system.

Luckily, I had my system ghosted on the back partition. So, I ghosted it back to the way it was, took me all of 6 minutes, and everything is fine now.

So, just a warning. Don't upgrade to the new 3.1 version.

Good luck,

My zone alarm program seems to prevent Outlook Express from receiving mail, as deactivating it allows. My server suggested removing OE from the list of programs of ZA. Why is this happening and is the advice good?

Also ZA keeps asking if I allow "common client cc" to activate the internet. Yes/no. What does this mean?

Many thanks.

It still doesn't work?. Is It needed to re-boot system so changes can take affect?.

Please Help ??

You should see a setting that would prompt you when a program wants access to the internet in the zone alarm. set it to prompt you then try to use the messenger and you should be prompted. Then when prompted be sure to change its settings to allow it to send and recieve.

I installed MSE the other day and right away had system hangs after boot. Went through the boot list and disabled things to troubleshoot. Disabled Zone Alarm True Vector and no problems. Once back online I searched for MSE problems and Zone Alarm was high on the listings. Seems MSE doesn't like ZA very much. I happen to like ZA a lot so I guess I'll head back to ESET NOD. I had zero troubles as far as operation untill MSE. Free is nice , if it works.

Its not usual for it to run that much, though I don't monitor it much

You could try trimming your startup programs.

Go to Run and type MSINFO32
On the left choose Software Enviroment, then Startup Programs. Copy/paste the list here.

This will reduce rescources.

Unless of course, you have something thats trying to get out. Have you run a virus scan lately?

Hi, you guys were so kind to help me out last time, I'm hoping someone can help me this time.

During the last debacle of the vcclient I installed ZoneAlarm free firewall. Since then, I have had the following problems:

1) Can connect on IE for a few minutes, then nothing. I can connect continuously through all other programs; aim, yahoo, games, etc.

2) unable to OPEN ZA. Nothing comes up. I can't turn it on or off.

3) Unable to UNINSTALL ZA. Says something about not being able to run vsmon.exe.

4) Unable to perform manual uninstall as listed on the ZA website.

I have to get this off of there, it's driving me INSANE.

Probably with the most recent version of Zone Alarm, something appeared in my MS Outlook. 3 new folders in the folders list: ZA Challenged Mail, ZA Junk Mail & a sub folder of that called ZA Phishing Mail.
I can't get rid of them, can't find where they came from in ZA and I hate them 'cuz they often grab real mail that I don't want filtered.
Do I have to dump ZA completely to get rid of these?
When Outlook loads, a ZA splash screen pops up for a second, says: ZA Security Suite, Powered by MailFrontier.
If I delete the folders in Outlook they just come back again when I close and re-open Outlook. Can't find any reference to this in Add & Remove Programs.
Any BTDT on this?

Anyone else have trouble with MSN messenger and Zone Alarm. I just switched to cable and am using Zone Alarm as a temporary firewall while i wait for my new router to arrive. But, like the last time I used Zone Alarm (about two years ago), MSN Messenger struggles to connect and stay connected. It took me ages to track the problem back to Zone Alarm last time (reinstalling, reimaging, reformatting etc). I actually have to uninstall ZA instead of just disabling it (which i obviously tried). MSN is set to have full access to all zones in the program control panel.
Its more curiosity now, as my new router should be arriving today and I will use that firewall instead.

I assume you mean the splash screen?

Go to your Winnt\All Users\Start Menu\Programs\StartUp directory (I'm 'translating' this from Win98, so you might have to look around a bit) , and rightclick the ZA shortcut you find there.

Choose 'Properties', and just add -nopopup -nosplash to the path, so that it looks like this:

"C:\Program Files\Zone Labs\ZoneAlarm\zonealarm.exe" -nopopup -nosplash

This is based on ZoneLabs instructions, and has proved a safe way of uninstalling ZA:

First, select 'Configure' from the main ZoneAlarm window, then deselect the 'Load ZoneAlarm at Startup' check box.
Reboot. That way TrueVector and other ZA files will not be active during uninstall. This causes most problems.

Now Uninstall Zonealarm by using the Add/remove applet, or from Start menu/Programs/Zone Labs/Uninstall ZoneAlarm.

Reboot. Subsequently verify that the following folders and files have been removed. If not, delete them:

Just managed to get rid of the preinstalled McAfee suite....and what a bear that was. Took a Dell technicion an hour and a half to get rid of it via remote access ( AND it cost me ?37.00! To get rid of a program I didn't want in the first place).

I am running AVG on this laptop but I wonder - do I still need Zone Alarm or any other protective measure as well as well? I thought WinXP has a decent firewall built in and I don't want to double up unnecessarily thereby slowing my laptop to a crawl.

Anyway know?

A:Zone alarm, do I still need it?

my opinion is no, i use xp's firewall

but i am sure there will be some security techs weighing in on this question.

lets hear from the experts

Can somebody tell me if the freeware version of Zone Alarm 2.6.632 is the version that had been replaced in the past 5 months or so. I looking for the version that was in use, just prior to the latest version being released.

Hi, Just thought I would ask since I never seen it before on my ZA icon. On occasions I see a curved up arrow on my ZA icon in my system tray and i was wondering if that is natural and is suppose to happen or is this spyware? If someone could let me know i would greatly appreciate it.

No worries dude, Zonealarm is working normally for you and is just updating "Zone Labs security software is receiving an update, such as an update of
new spyware definitions or virus definitions." pg. 15 of the Zonealarm Manual, found here:

i just downloaded zone alarm (free version) and i wondered how you can access the progam list that you allow access to. i also would like to know if you can trace an ip address and find out which program is accesing it. and i have 600k ntl broadband and i wondered what connection you would call it (asdl, cable modem, etc...)
any help would be great thanks a lot.

If I understand your question correctly the list of programs allowed access to the web will be created as you go online and ZA asks you for permission for each program.

Zone Alarm should open in its Overview window and on the left hand side you should see a reference to Program Control. Clicking on that produces two options Main and Programs-clicking on Programs shows the actual list of authorised programs. It indicates whether a program already has permission by a green tick, if you have told the program to ask for permission each time there will be a blue question mark and if you permanently refuse access, there will be a red X.

Personally, I make most programs seek permission every time. If you have a lot of autoupdating programs this will be a nuisance so it's your choice. Sorry I can't help with the rest of your query.

I use the free version of Zone Alarm firewall. Today in in the active programs section there was a symbol with a hand on it. When I moved the mouse over it to see what it was, it said "Application Layer Gateway Service Listening to Port(s): TCP: 1032". Anybody know what it is?

Hey folks I've never seen this before Upon the advice of one of our own malware experts I was advised to use a different firewall than the default windows in Zone the way Alarm one I was so unlucky as to choose Zone Alarm free This application has done nothing but reeked havoc on my applications including screen reading apps I need just to get around the computer since I've been blind all of my life as most of you may know In fact I can't do anything with internet explorer since ZA throws up an alert and my Zone Alarm in the way screen reader can't read it I tried several Zone Alarm in the way ways to get rid of the alerts until I find an accessible firewall that doesn't kill my essentials Zone Alarm in the way I have tried using Win Patrol to delete the file that causes the alerts to pop up I tried uninstalling ZA completely with Revo Uninstaller first and now ever since when uninstalling it I constantly get the message that one of it's files is missing I can't delete the program files folder directory since the dang thing is running How do I get this thing out of my way MSConfig doesn't even allow it to terminate when unchecking it in the list any input would be great Many thanks Chromebuster

Hi All
Any advantage or disadvantage to useing Zone alarm pro
instead of the free version?
Running win xp on a new computer.
Thank You

A:zone alarm

I run the Plus version myself. I have other things to handle what the Pro adds to Plus.

The free version is good ... I got the Plus because there was an instant off $10 coupon, so I got it cheaper than regular retail ... and the relatively small amount of money was worth what the Plus added to the capabilities.

I have Zone Alarm installed and I am wanting to stop it from checking my e-mail for junk. Is there any way of disabling this and deleting the Junk Mail folders etc?
I cannot find any way of disabling it.

A:Zone Alarm

I opened up ZA, then clicked on the email protection tab, and turned the Junk Email Filter radio button to 'Off'.

Then deleted the ZoneAlarm folders in outlook, and removed the ZoneAlarm bar from outlook - ie right clicked and then turned it off.

Seems to have gone for me.

I have Zone Alarm 7.0 which I downloaded in mid January. Now I want to add something and I cant because my Zone Alarm keeps asking for a password (which I have reset online several times) which says I am typing in the wrong password. Now I am so frustrated I just want to remove Zone Alarm and cannot because attempts to remove it require the same dumb password.

I restarted in safe mode and removed files that end with rdb, ldb, tmp. No luck.

Attempts to remove from the start menu still ask for password.

I get to the screen after dl is complete, where you enter your name and email addy....then click next...then the next "next" button isn't clickable...but the "buy Pro Alarm" button is. Can't seem to get beyond that. It says the versin is free. Any ideas? Thanks! Take care and have a great day. angelize56

I leave my computer on all the time. After a prolonged period with no use, ZA locks me out of the internet. I have to shut down ZA and start it up again. Is there any setting to prevent this?

A:Zone Alarm

wiggin , If memory serves me right ( i did use zone alarm at one time , but don't any longer ) there is a setting that locks your pc after a period of inactivity , although in saying that , if it's being used it would be just a case of hitting your keyboard to de-activate it.

Anyway have a look to see if it's the culprit by opening ZA and choosing "program control" in the left hand pane and checking that the automatic lock is not enabled.
