Preferred Solution: hard disk test failed

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/directdownload.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Please tell us a little more about your computer. It sounds like either the hard drive has failed, or the hard drive has come loose from the motherboard. It is also possible that it is a problem with the motherboard itself.I am assuming you are running the Hard Drive Test from BIOS. Have you tried placing the hard drive in a different SATA port on the motherboard? It could be that just the SATA it is currently connected to has failed. You could also place the hard drive in another computer and seeing if it gets recognized then, indicating it was a problem with the motherboard (in which case that computer is pretty much screwed. Contact your manufacturer to see if it's under warranty and if they'll replace it).If neither of these work then most likely the hard drive is shot. You'll pretty much have to either get the hard drive replaced by the manufacturer or buy a new one. One last thing, have you tried running system recovery off of the Vista Installation Discs?

Yes. One day soon it will not boot up. At a minimum you should be backing up religiously.

A:Hard disk Short DST test failed

Hi, The 24 character error code does confirm a failure of the short Disk Self Test and would indicate that the Hard Drive is failing and needs to be replaced. If your notebook is still under warranty, contact HP and arrange to have the drive replaced - If needed, you can check your warranty status Here. If you live in the US, contact HP Here. If you are in another part of the world, start Here. If you are out of warranty and would like a guide on replacing the Hard Drive yourself, please let me know. Regards, DP-K

A:hard disk ide dps test failed and not booting.

Hi dionrodrigues,
Is your PC new and have added any new components to it recently (RAM in particular)? The error code you are getting usually appears when there is new RAM installed. If you could upload the BSOD it would be helpful. Another thing to try would be reseating your RAM.
As for your hard drive, I would suggest connecting it with different cables and in a different port. Afterwards, you could consider running a brand specific diagnostic tool on the disk to check its health. There are third party software solutions to be found online, however the once from the manufacturer provide the most accurate results as they are developed for such drive and know the firmware best. You can upload a screenshot of the SMART status after running an extended test. It would be best if can test the drive on a different PC with different SATA cables.
If you manage to access the drive I strongly recommend doing a backup prior to any testing just to be on the safe side.
If the drive has bad sectors it is recommended to change it, or if you use it Ė not to trust it with important information. Having regular backups is always a good idea
Keep me posted,

My computer was working fine, it turned off fine. Later when I turned it back on it wouldn't go past the black windows logo screen with the loading bar. Then every time I turned it on I got the improper shut down screen. None of the safe mode or configuration options would run. I tried all the boot options and none would work. Tried using start up disks and couldn't get repair or anything to work. Got a message that windows couldn't find mass storage device and HDD test had read failure. Everything pointed to a bad drive. For the heck of it I tried windows reinstall and it worked, even tho I lost my info. So I don't understand why a working drive would suddenly become inoperable when it's really not. What would do this? Don't want it to happen again

My 2 TB WD MyPassport Ultra has stopped working. In disk management, it shows unallocated and when i try to initialize it, it says an I/O error has occured. This hard disk was bought only 20 days ago from amazon.

I tried inserting it on different computers, through different cables etc.

I read a lot of threads on this forum on similar(same) problems. I performed WD Lifeguard test, and my hard disk failed both quick test and extended test. What should I do?

The suspected cause is that it was being used on a computer when the system showed blue screen of death. It has not been working since then.

A:Hard Disk not recognised; Unallocated; Lifeguard Test failed

If hope that you had a back up of your stuff or there was nothing important on that drive. You have to contact Amazon and get a replacement. The BSOD did not cause the problem, the problem caused the BSOD. There is a surprisingly large number of HDs that are corrupt when purchased. You should not have a problem trying to exchange it. I do wish you good luck and sorry about your situation.

So this really irritates me because I just spent hundreds of dollars sending my laptop to HP last year because the hard drive completely failed. I have a 1TB hybrid hard drive and 22Gb solid state used for caching.  When I booted up my computer Intel Rapid Storage Technology said there was an issue.  When I opened it, it says that the status of: SATA disk (932 GB)(System) Accelerated, is Failed.  My SATA_Array_0001 22GB is fine though.  So I ran a System Quick Test, everything passed except Hard Drive Short DST Check: FAILEDFAILURE ID: Q4MP7Q-6RA82U-MFGJWK-60W303 This is weird because other than the computer telling me there is something wrong every time I restart it, It seems to run just fine.  Im just worried because I don't want it to randomly die on me one day.

A:SATA disk failed and Hard Drive Short DST Check: Failed

Hi there @nmulji,  Thank you for joining in on the HP Support Forums and Welcome! This is a great place to ask questions, find solutions and get help from others in the community! I read your post on the HP Support Forums and understand that the Hard Drive in your HP ENVY TouchSmart 15t-j100 Select Edition CTO Notebook PC failed the Short DST Check.  SMART (Self-Monitoring Analysis and Reporting Technology System) uses a technology known as predictive failure analysis to tell you when a hard drive failure is imminent. Have you tried to Restore the BIOS? If not, please try this step first. Then, just to be on the safe side, back up your data that way it does not get lost. However, there might be certain conditions that cause a hard drive failure message to display when a problem does not exist (a false positive). To fix false positive hard drive errors, please try updating the hard drive firmware. You can check whether an update is available by going to the  Get software and drivers page. You will need to put in your Model Number and then click the links that pertain to the computer configuration and see if a hard drive update is available.  You could also try to do a  Disk Defragment to consolidate files and move them to another section of the drive where errors are less likely to occur. Did this reply resolve your issue or answer your question? If yes, then please share the good news! Let others know this reply was helpful by clicking the Accept as Solution button. You can also show your appreciation by clicking the Thumbs Up. If you require further assistance, I would be more than happy to continue to help you. Please re-post with the results of the troubleshooting. Thanks!

On some Toshiba's I've worked on, including my own Tecra, I press Escape and Function 1 to get a boot menu and with an XP CD in, there's a three second only window in which to "press any key" when the prompt appears. Are you seeing that prompt when you boot from CD? You might also benefit from formatting that hard disk in the other machine if you already started to install on it.

My computer is an hp Pavilion Entertainment PC dv2000. Since I had a boot-up problem (hangs after login with cursor arrow on blank screen), I did a system restore to an earlier date, but the problem still persists. So I did a hard disk self test on BIOS. It comes up with a "Test Status #1-07 Fail" almost right away, and then stops the testing (it is supposed to take 129 minutes).

I have been trying to get information on this message, but I have had no luck. Can anybody help me?

It is rather urgent, unfortunately :-(

Thanks!

Hi, The 24 character error code is a failure of the short Disk Self Test and would indicate that the Hard Drive is failing and needs to be replaced.

Pretty weird stuff you got going on - media player starting like that. It might take less time to put in a new drive and make a fresh OS build than to ferret out way this stuff is happening. But if you want to play with and learn from the situation that you have, Process Explorer might reveal what is launching media player.

Hi,

I recently ran a scheduled diagnostic test of my PC with the manufacturer's diagnostic software. I received two error messages and the advice to promptly replace my hard drive. The first message was Failed (Error code: WHD20-1VR) and the second was Failed (Error code: WHD16-T57). The apply to Targeted Read test and Smart Short Self Test respectively.

So I ran Chkdsk for the C: drive and received no error messages.

Which is correct and what should I do about it? The error message won't go away on the software.

Thanks for helping.

A:Question: Failed Targeted Read Test and SMART Short Self Test

CHKDSK is a very basic check that mostly checks file system and can be set to scan for bad sectors. The manufacturer's diagnostics actually check the physical drive to make sure its operating within the designed parameters and is more thorough.

You should replace the drive.

I ran a diagnostic test on my computer because I am unable to boot my operating system. When I start the computer, I get the CNTRL ALT DEL screen and then the password screen but from there I get a dialog box that states "the procedure entry point CoRegisterInitializeSpy could not be located in the dynamic link library ole32.dll" and a blank desktop. Any help would be GREATLY appreciated!

When I start my pc it stops at the start in the black ones. (the one with the bios at the start) Hardisk failed appears when I press f1,f8 and others then it is askin for a system disk. Boot from disk press any key etc. on top of it appears secondary ide 80 connector not installed. (something like that I forgot what exactly appeared but I think youíve got it). Iíve checked the connections already inside but they are all right. What is the cause of it. Thanks.

A:Help!!! Hard disk failed???? Why..

Who is the manufacturer of your disk ?

You may be able to download some hard disk checking utilities from the Manufacturers site.
These are usually in the form of a boot up floppy, that will load some tools to check the drive.

I have a Seagate SATA Barracuda -Gigabyte Model ST AS hard disk here that has failed It spins but it is not detected as present by either Windows or the BIOS When I first got it it would actually bring up the Windows XP logo as though it would start Windows Then it would go to a blank black screen with a blinking cursor in the upper left corner It wouldn t get past that After making several attempts it finally was no longer detected as present at all To be clear it isn t detected in another known-good machine so the drive is toast I am hoping what has failed is the logic board on What, this exactly, it is has hard failed that disk? as opposed to any other part If it is the logic board that has failed recovering the data is as easy as finding a hard disk of the exact model number and swapping What, exactly, is it that has failed on this hard disk? the logic board Here s the only clue I have When I turn on the computer and after a few seconds I hear a quiet but discernable tick tick tick tick tick that goes on for a minute then stops After a while it starts the tick-tick again and then quits again after a while It sounds like the stylus is moving forth and back and tapping the spindle or something Here s the question What are the chances it is something besides the logic board nbsp

Has Hard Disk missing and used System Restore everything was back to normal after that for about a day My computer started to slow later and then it crashed After that it could not boot Has my Hard Disk Failed? It always restarted when trying to boot Then the next day disk checking was performed when I booted it and it worked for a while until it crashed again This happened about times Later I either got a stop error when I selected disable automatic restart on system failure but i was able to use safe mode A short while later even safe mode didn t work Either the screen remained blank whenever I pressed F or I got the error quot Failed to load operating system quot or the error quot Disk Error Occured quot I decided to install a fresh copy of xp I formatted it and reinstalled After that I still got the message quot Failed to load Operating System quot so I installed xp on my D hard drive and evrything worked fine Right now I have xp and some other files on my D and on my C WIndow and a few other files I put on it When I boot my computer it gives me the option of selecting from copies of quot Micorosft WIndows XP quot One of them is the D one Right now when I tried to boot I got quot Failed to Load Operating System quot error again When I unplugged my computer and replugged it i was prompted for disk checking skipped and it worked fine again So I m wondering if this is because my hard disk failed or for some other reason If my hard disk did fail then do I have to remove it from my computer or do I just have to leave it empty and not use it nbsp

A:Has my Hard Disk Failed?

Yes it could be failing, what make is the drive, it is best to get the manufacturers diagnostic utilities and run them as they can mask some of the bad sectors sometimes. Also you could try writing zero's to the drive using Darik's Boot and Nuke from HERE.

You can download the DOS based Seatools from Seagate and run them against the hard drive.  These diagnostics are excellent and will give you good information about the condition of that drive.

I have bought a new 40G HD from a local Computer super market and installed Win2K and Office 2K and have been using for sometime.

Then it crashed. I used a Maxtor utility to do a Low Level format on it. Then reinstalled Win2K and Office 2K but it failed after I completed the installation.

I tried doing the LLF and the installation the second time. It failed. I tried doing the LLF and the installation the third time. And it failed again.

Is there a way I can rescue this hard disk?

I aint concerned about the data. Just the HD.

Many Thanks.

A:No hard disk detected or has failed

Howdy @Fraser11?, Welcome to the HP Support Forums.   I gather that since replacing the power supply in your Pavilion 500-076ea that your hard disk is no longer detected.   I am confident that I will be able to help you work towards a solution, and I ask only that you pay it forward. When we resolve the issue, I'd like for you to kindly mark the applicable post as Accept as Solution so that others experiencing the same or similar issue can find what worked for you. Please use the Replacing the Power Supply in HP and Compaq Desktop PCs document as a checklist to ensure that nothing was missed when you replaced the power supply.  In my experience, most of the time when this error occurs after replacing the power supply there is a cable that is not connected securely.  Please let me know the results.

Presumably you have a product key on a sticker somewhere. Sometimes under the battery.

If so, you only need to find installation media.

The disk also a makes a few clunking noises on power-on so suspect it's failed. No reovery disk or backup unfortunately. I do have a spare disk I can install but it has no software installed. Can anyone please advise how I might go about getting the system working ? Many thanks

Hi, My girlfriend dropped her laptop and now the hard disk died. Since she doesn't have any recovery disks, I'm looking for advice on how to re-install her OS with a new hard disk. Since I'm not sure of the exact windows version (32 or 64-bit) and haven't found a good ISO-image for her laptop (it's an Italian version) I could use some help. I have the product key. Please advise. Best regards, Sies Stadhouders

Hi,I have an HP2000-2b10NR that originally had Win8 upgraded to Win10 and now has a failed hard disk. What are my options for replacing the hard disk and reinstalling Windows? I'm technically inclined, and could replace the disk, but don't have a copy of Windows. Is the recovery partition necessary to do a reinstall, or can I download Win10 for this laptop with a new disk installed?

A:HP2000-2b10NR Failed Hard Disk

MS gives you a free download of Windows 10. Since it has been activated before on the laptop it should reactivate without a key.You can skip the product key page by selecting the Skip button. Your PC will automatically activate later.https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/software-download/windows10/

I have an hp pavilion 542x, it's Hard Drive failed me so I bought a new one. When I put in the 8 Disk set recovery CD'S every thing goes fine until I get to disk 8 right after disk 8 is done It says creating user portion, and then it says: Cannot create user portion. Setup cannot continue. So I click Ok (the only thing to click) and then it restarts and goes back into recovery mode and says the same thing again. P.S. I have the right Disk format (NTFS)

A:My Hard Drive Failed, Restore Disk Problems?

Hi Tux

you got the recovery disk? - how come you got 8 cd's instead of one? Pardon me for being stoopid.

Also, did you find out why your first disk canned?

What is your current disk?

After watching for hrs and hrs as the disks install themselves, are you satisfied that the formatting completed successfully?

Hi nbsp As stated I have an HP envy laptop that I purchased year ago Just days ago my warranty has ended At the same point in time I was also trying to roll back to a previous windows install as there was a pesky app that was installed when I lend the laptop to my friend When I got it back it works just fine but it had that malware in it that I want to remove nbsp So I fired up system restore and go on restoring It finished doing so until nbsp it restarts When it restarts I was stuck in the loading screen with the HP logo for hours to which I decide to fire up the restore through the recovery media All works well until I got stuck in the installation I got stuck at When I searched on the internet why the reason might be because the wi-fi adapter is still on I am able to open it SM... Long Short DST check but Disk DST and passed Hard failed, up and take it off for a moment But because I need to go to work I decided against it I turned the laptop off and set off nbsp When I got back I can't even let it proceed to the installation saying that there's an issue with teh windows install and it needs to reboot Did that same thing several times and nothing happened nbsp Then I decided to go to BIOS and do the hard disk check It passed the SMART test but failed the Short DST as well as Long DST It produced the error code nbsp MFUC T- RG K-CD WMG- DK nbsp Is it possible for me to resolve the issue by my own through another reinstall Or is the HDD really is ruined If this is the case I'm probably just going to go ahead and replace it with an SSD

A:Hard Disk Short DST and Long DST check failed, but passed SM...

Whenever the Hard Disk Short DST test fails that indicates that the Hard Disk Drive has failed and that requires a replacement to resolve the issue This issue could be due to Application or driver conflicts, virus issues, file corruptions due to incompatible applications, improper shutdowns, update failures due to conflicts, sudden power surges, if notebook is dropped etc.. HP will provide a replacement Hard Disk Drive if the Notebook warranty is Active, If not you need buy a SATA Hard Disk Drive from a retail shop nearby Please make sure you are getting at least equal capacity as the original one in order to use Recovery Disks. If you need you can buy a larger, but not smaller capacity Hard Disk Drive. For example if you have a 500GB Hard Disk Drive you can upgrade it to 750GB Hard Disk Drive but not 320GB Hard Disk Drive Please try the below shown troubleshooting steps once:Step 01. Remove the battery and unplug the AC/Power AdapterStep 02. Press and hold the Power button for more than 30 SecondsStep 03. Plug in the AC/Power Adapter (leave the Battery out for now)Step 04. Press the Power button and check if the Unit works normal If the above mentioned steps does not help, then you can try reseating the Hard Drive on your Notebook If the issue persists again please Contact HP if your HP Notebook is under warranty, HP would replace the Hard Disk Drive and provide you a Recovery media to restore factory operating system after replacement (if you've not yet created Recovery Discs/USB Media) Note: Back up all the personal data to an external drive if it's possible. Otherwise you could connect the failed HDD via SATA to USB adapter with another PC or same PC after replacement of HDD & re-installation of OS and try copying /recovering the files. Ok, my wife's hard drive is toast. Can't read at all. I even removed it, put it in an external enclosure with USB connection and tried to read it on my computer, nada. Tried Spinrite on it. Nada. So, it's gone, and I can't recover anything.

I'm buying a new HD. The OEM version of Windows 7 was pre-installed by HP on the laptop. So I have no disks. I do have the 3 Recovery Disks my wife created when we bought the machine. But when I was trying to revive the harddrive one of the recovery screens said Windows 7 had to be already installed on the hard drive for that to work.

So, is there anyway for me to get Windows 7 on the new HD short of buying a new copy? The laptop does have a sticker on it with a product key.

Steve

Hi demon2192,
Error code 2000:0142 means that the hard drive has gone bad and requires a replacement. As you are able to boot into windows, I recommend you to backup the laptop's data on an external hard drive. I am adding you as a friend. Please accept my request and reply through a private message with the system 'Service Tag' and 'Account Holder's' name. I will check the warranty status of the laptop and provide you the best support options available. Do reply if you have any further questions. I would be glad to assist.

Hello.

I have an external hard drive. I did the check for errors thing from properties>tools. I checked the options "automatically fix file system errors" and "scan for and attempt recovery of bad sectors". After some time I thought the scan froze up so I hit cancel and not the disk is unusable. It says "X:\ is not accessible. Access is denied." Same message if I try the error checking option again.

Please help.

A:External hard drive not working after failed disk scan

I think first you need to check for possible drive failure before trying anything else, since if does turn out to be drive failure that's end of story -- new drive required. Download the Diagnostic Software (installable Windows version) from the drive manufacturer's website. The links are here: http://www.tacktech.com/display.cfm?ttid=287

Sounds like a failing hard disk, but the overheating thing is worrisome.

The TOSHIBA MK6465GSX is a 2.5" form factor SATA drive, 9.5 mm thick. You should be able to replace it with any drive with the same dimensions. (You probably can use a thinner drive, but a spacer may be needed to mount it.) That includes SSDs that are intended as laptop HD replacements.

I see that there are a couple of YouTube videos showing how to replace the HD for your model laptop.

A:System volume on disk is corrupt? (disk metadata test)

Either windows Vista needs re-installing, a Factory Recovery is required, or the hard drive is starting to fail and therefore needs replacing with a new one.

You can test the hard drive with the drive manufacturer's diagnostic software. You will need to download the DOS version which runs from a bootable CD. The download contains an ISO file for creating the CD. The links are here: Hard Drive Diagnostics Tools and Utilities (Storage) - TACKtech Corp.

A:Can't format hard-disk nor do partition when using boot disk. Hard-disk failure

It sounds like it might be the bootable CD you've created is not picking up the HDD's/partitions.
To eliminate this as a posibility travel to bootdisk and grab the WinME bootdisk and boot from there. If it picks up the HDD you can FDISK and Format from there.
The other option is to boot using the XP CD and let it handle the formatting/partitioning duties...

Hi,

"pri master hard disk: s.m.a.r.t. command failed

I get the above error when I turn on my computer, but when I load windows after pressing f1 everything seems to be fine, do I need to worry about this? It started occuring after I installed my q6600 cpu last night.

A:"pri master hard disk: s.m.a.r.t. cmd failed" error

If your drive or PC is still under warranty, I would have the drive replaced. The SMART diagnostics are used to tell you if the drive is running outside of the specs designed by the manufacturer. If the drive goes outside the specs, then there is usually a 72-hour timeframe before the drive fails completely.

But with the error you are getting, it sounds like it's an error with the SMART diags themselves - which should be replaced anyway.

asus is pretty vague on this error. Either reseat your cpu or call asus.

Check your manual, I think it would be wise to try and clear cmos to reset to defaults. If it boots you will have to enter bios and reset the options to the way you had them after clearing
