Preferred Solution: internet explorer icon not showing

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/directdownload.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hello all.
First time here and probably not the last on account of Murphy's Law.
My OS is Windows 7 Home Premium Edition (x64).
I installed IE11 with no problems.
Once completed, I rebooted but could not locate the IE desktop icon.
Inspected the Internet Explorer folder. All files seem to be there including the .exe file. After clicking on this IE11 .exe file, nothing happened.
Checked the Control Panel to ensure IE11 was in fact installed and that it was "activated." All in order.
This is a mystery as I have used previous versions of IE without any problems.
Any attempts, to resolve this glitch, will be appreciated greatly. Cheers.

I've problems in the past with the Malware Defense and Antivirus Live malware programs and some others that required reformatting. I backed up a bunch of music on dvd-r by saving them as data discs and it loaded up no prob and passed all scans by avg free and malwarebytes. I went to load up my last dvd-r of pics from my daughter and the files showed up as an internet explorer "e" symbol instead of a folder. Don't know if it's anything to worry about.

A:Icon In Tray Showing Internet Connectivity

Easy fixes .

To enable the Connect To listing: Right-click on Start, click on Properties. Click Customize button on Start Menu tab, then click Advanced tab. Scroll down to Network Connections, put mark in Display As Connect To Menu.

To enable the connection icon: Go to Connection, right-click, select Properties. General tab. Put check mark in Show Icon...., click OK.

Should take care of it (I hope).

I do have the same problem, and a search in the MS site provides the info bound to the following link,

http://support.microsoft.com/default...b;en-us;303597

which ain't much helpful. Anyway I am going to remove all the protocols installed, and run windows xp setup once again using the /unattend option so that I wont have to re-install all the software existing.

You can try the same too, incase if you are on Windows XP. Insert the WinXP CD, type the following into your Start->Run dialogue box D:\i386\winnt32.exe /unattend (Assuming your CD-ROM drive letter is D:\) all the best buddy, and incase if you come across any other work arounds, please post it in here.

Recently many of the sites that I visit have the empty box with a small red X in it in place for images. At first I thought it was just the site but now it's happening on almost all sites that have a lot of images. I usually have to refresh the page three or four times before they all show up properly. It doesn't to seem to be any specific type of image I cant view. It happens with both JPEGs and GIFs.

So then I thought that it could possibly be my firewall. So I disabled it and refreshed the page again but that didn't work. So I decided to come here and get some help if possible. It is getting very frustrating.

My computer at work has been recently upgraded from Windows 2000 to XP. Funny thing is that the Internet Explorer icon (not a shortcut) doesn't show on the desktop. When I right click on the desktop to open the display properties and select the IE icon to be displayed, it still doesn't show on screen. I can only find shortcuts. They're not what I need because when you right click on a shortcut, the IE properties don't show (so you can't delete history or cookies). If I want the properties, I have to open IE.

Can you tell me how to get the real IE icon on the desktop?

Thank you

By default, the Show Desktop Icons feature is turned on for clean installations of Windows XP, but the Recycle Bin is the only icon that is put on the desktop. If you upgrade a previous version of Windows to Windows XP, all user icons remain on the desktop. By default, the My Computer, My Network Places, Internet Explorer, and My Documents icons are no longer put on the desktop for clean installations or upgrades. To add the My Computer, My Network Places, Internet Explorer, and My Documents icons back to your desktop: 1. Right-click the desktop, and then click Properties.
2. On the Desktop tab, click Customize Desktop.
3. Under Desktop icons, click to select the check boxes of the icons you want to view.
4. Click OK two times.

A:Internet Explorer Icon

try clicking on the actual file, iexplore.exe - first delete icon you're clicking on
navigate to c:\Program Files\Internet Explorer\iexplore.exe and click on the file
if this works for you and IE opens, then go to c:\Program Files\Internet Explorer\iexplore.exe
and right click on iexplore.exe and choose "Send to.." and select Desktop (create shortcut)
this will create a new IE shortvut on desktop that should work for you
if clicking on the iexplore.exe does not work, you would have to re-install interent explorer to see if that would resolve issue

You can delete history from Tools/Internet Options on the General page,anyway do you still have IE on your Start menu? If you do, try right clicking on it to see if you get the option to open the Internet Options page,if it works then just drag it from the Start menu to the Desktop

Hi guys I apologize in advance if this is the wrong forum to be posting thread or if this question has been answered already Explorer Icon Internet in which case I wouldn't mind a link or two AND for the length of the query I have a bit of a funny problem First I pinned the internet explorer to the start menu from its location in quot all programs quot Having done that I deleted the shortcut if it is that I wonder now from the quot all programs quot list I'm just weird that way Now I Internet Explorer Icon do not know whether this was a direct consequence of the deletion but after a little while i noticed the internet explorer icon of Internet Explorer Icon the pinned shortcut had reverted to its generic version I tried changing the icon by going into properties but that didn't work Strangely enough when I looked at the original app in the program folder it had also reverted to a generic icon So I decided to go disable the IE service from programs and features restart my pc for it to take effect turn it on and restart again The icon was back Internet Explorer Icon in the quot all programs quot list but was still generic but its target in the IE folder was back to normal I tried pinning the shortcut to no avail So I tried pinning the original app itself The entire list of pinned programs disappeared And when I removed IE from the list it came back Okay then In an effort to eliminate a possibility for the disappearing programs in the start menu I unpinned a random app The entire list disappeared again If try to change the position of an app which has just been pinned the list disappears Don't know whether the two are connected issues Somebody please help because this is just weird and I really need IE nice and accessible and my start menu working I'd really appreciate any help P S Pinning it to the taskbar also gives me the generic icon

A:Internet Explorer Icon

Hello Kalaris, and welcome to Seven Forums.

Since you pinned the IE shortcut from All Programs, then the pinned items would no longer work or display properly when the target source IE shortcut from All Programs was deleted.

You will need to unpin it from the Start Menu, create a new IE shortcut directly from the IE iexplore.exe file, place that shortcut where you want to have it at, then pin that shorcut to the Start Menu.

Hope this helps,
Shawn

Hello
I have a windows vista premimum loaded laptop with internet explorer 8 installed. Everything was working fine up to a point when i had to reset the internet explorer settings to its default.

Prior to the reset, I was able to add favorites and view the favorites in my address bar asi begin to type the letters. But after the reset, this behaviour stopped.

I have tried the autocomplete path. The address bar and the favorites check box are ticked under tools > options > content > settings. I un-checked clicked ok and checked back again, just to make sure that it gets reset in the registry. But still I cannot get the favorites to display in address bar as I type.

This happened before and I followed a registry tweak which corrected the behavoiur. Unfortunately I cannot find the link anymore and I did not add it to favorite !!. Any help is highly appreciated. Thanks

A:[SOLVED] Internet Explorer Favorites not showing up !!

Ok, Looks like either no has a solution or no one has bothered to reply. Anyways, for the benefit of others who might have faced the same problem, find below the solution that I figured out.

In IE go to Tools > Internet Options > Content.
Click Settings under Auto Complete
Make sure Address Bar is ticked and so is Favorite.
But most importantly, make sure that "Use Windows Search for better results" is un-ticked.

Click OK and OK again.

Now you will be able to see favourites appearing in the address bar.

Thanks for viewing.

I have a toolbar on my taskbar titled "Programs". It has about eight folders in it. I made another toolbar, and placed it directly adjacent to the Programs toolbar, to obscure the eight folders and force it to be a dropdown menu.

Trouble is, as soon as I lock my taskbar, right next to the arrow that displays the eight items of my Programs toolbar in menu-form, one of the eight items is showing up as an icon, as if the other toolbar isn't close enough to the Programs toolbar in order to completely obscure the eight items.

Here's what I mean in graphic form:

It's bugging me to no end. Anyone else had this problem/resolved it?

A:Toolbar on taskbar should only be showing an arrow but is showing icon

Hello thewonkits, and welcome to Seven Forums.

I notice this happens when using small icons for a toolbar. If you like, you could unlock the taskbar, right click on the dotted separator line to the left of the two top far left toolbars (one at a time) click on View and Large Icons, then lock the taskbar to see if that may look ok to you. It will make the top row a bit bigger though.

Hopefully someone may know a better way to hide that bit of icon poking out when locked.

I made unattended installation on WinXPSP2 with some optimizations with cmdlines.txt.
After booting, the IExplorer icon was missing from Desktop and Quick Launch Toolbar. I configured it to start with the Windows Classic Theme, and I made registry changes for the icon to appear, but it was still missing.

;Enable Show Internet Explorer Icon on Desktop
[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Explorer]
"NoInternetIcon"=dword:00000000
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Explorer]
"NoInternetIcon"=dword:00000000

I checked the registry. These entries were there!!!

Did someone have the same problem?
Thanks.

Don't know about XP, but in Win 2K there's a box to check (or uncheck) to show (or not show) the IE icon on the desktop. It's in Internet Options under the Advanced tab.

I delete the desktop icon, but in the toolbar, internet explorer is still there? what can I do?,because I want internet explorer on my desktop.

Hello Phillip,

You can right click on the taskbar, select toolbars, and uncheck the one for Internet Explorer to remove that toolbar from the taskbar.

This is a good Internet Shortcut that you can use on the desktop if you like.

Instead of the usual IE icon, I have a generic icon that's used when the file type is unknown. I use Firefox anyway, but I do have one link on my desktop to check my e-mail that's meant to be used with IE.

Hi all,

My site shows in compatibility mode in Internet Explorer 8. I couldn't figure out why so I did a little test.. I created a new HTML file and put this into it:

HTML Code:
<?xml version= "1.0" encoding= "UTF-8"?>
<!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD XHTML 1.1//EN" "http://www.w3.org/TR/xhtml11/DTD/xhtml11.dtd">
<html xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml">
<head>
<title>Internet Explorer 8 Test</title>
</head>
<body>
</body>
</html>
This is valid XHTML 1.1. How come Internet Explorer 8 still gives me a compatibility icon at the top?

I have a preview release still installed in a virtual machine and I can see pinned sites on that but not on this proper 64 bit purchased full install copy of Windows 8.

Anyone else having this problem?

For some reason my IE7 program & Icon are missing? When i click the "Internet" icon (which is a globe not an E), it pops up the Internet Properties dialog box and does not load IE ! The only way to connect to the Internet is to find a link and click on it which takes me directly to the internet without any problems. The connection is fine - it seems not to be associated or linked to the IE program correctly! Any advice ???

A:Internet Explorer program & Icon missing ?

Technically, Interent Explorer connot go missing because it is not like any other program, it is actually a key component of windows. Without IE, u wouldnt be able to access ur My Documents or My Computer or even the Control Panel.
My suggestion is to go to Start, Run, and type iexplore.exe
that should open Internet Explorer...let me know if this works, then ill be able to help u put an icon on your desktop..

A:I Need To Have ALL Weblinks Open IN ONE Internet Explorer Icon???

Sounds to me like you used a different Internet explorer listing,

If you deleted something it would be in your recycle bin= have you looked and restored it ?

Hi Guys,

Where and what controls the Windows icon that rotates in the top right hand corner of my IE 6 window, i.e. at the far right of the menu bar just beneath the X?

Mine has changed from the standard Windows icon and I'd like to change it back (without reloading IE).

I'm intrigued on this one as I can't locate any registry entry that might control it.

Then maybe it would be possible to use an icon of your own choice?

Thanks for any info.

cheers

the IE icon that's normally on my desktop is gone.

the "icon" and words are there, but its a default windows icon becuz it cant find the right one.

awhile ago i installed sumthing called style xp that gives all these cool themes to xp....once i deleted the program, and one of the themes, the icon was gone.

in my start menu, the regular icon is present. justnot on the desktop.

i believe this problem is related to the themes thing becuz when i copy/create a shortcut to the ie icon on the desktop, the shortcut uses the same default (wrong) icon. when i riteclik on the shortcut + go 2 properties, and try to change icon, a msg instantly pops up and sez "windows cant find 'the path to "internet explorer.ico" that lies in an old deleted theme folder .

thanks for reading.....please help me, the computer is not mine

Hello,

I am running XP SP2. I am having a problem getting Internet Explorer to open. Under Network Connections, the LAN icon is gone. There are actually no icons in Netword Connections. I'm not sure what is usually all supposed to be in there. When I run troubleshooting, the computer says that my network should be set up and running fine though.

I cannot get Internet Explorer to open up either. When I double-click to open it, the window will briefly flash like it wants to open up, and then disappears. It doesn't show up in Task Manager processes or anything after this either. This happens with several other programs as well, such as my Intel Network Adapter program among others.

If anyone can please help, I would greatly appreciate it.

Thanks, Stu

I went though a process about two weeks ago where one of the BC experts helped restore my computer and ultimately eliminate a search engine redirect problem. The support was outstanding.

Today I noticed a new problem when I am using IE 8. I will get messages telling me the webpage has been restored but I am not able to get it back. When I close IE 8 I see Notepad Icons on my desktop with labels such as "hs_err_pid2712" The content says something about an Exception Stack Overflow.

Any ideas?

I did a clean install of Wincdows 7 Home Premium today. I placed the Internet Explorer (32 bit) icon on the start menu but it displays only a generic icon. (Internet Explorer 64 bit is ok.) I did some playing around and have gotten the proper icon to display in the start menu but it still displays the generic icon in the task bar.
I tried deleting the IconCache.db in the username folder but it did no good.
Any ideas how I might fix this??

You might see if unpinning the IE icon on the taskbar, then pinning IE from the Start Menu with the good icon to the taskbar to see if it will be correct afterwards.

How can I make a desktop shortcut for Internet Explorer?

There is no option to create a shortcut after right clicking on IE--neither in Start/Programs nor on the IE icon I have on the task bar.

I think the icon I have on the task bar is the one that used to be on the desktop before I moved it; because I couldn't find how to create a duplicate back then either.

Why is it that some Internet Explorer shortcut files have the default "e" icon (right) while others have a unassociated "generic" icon (left)? Does it have to do with the way the website is designed? When I looked at my Favorites folders I noticed that a bunch of shortcuts have this "unknown" icon and there dosen't seem to be a way to change it back to the default (I like all my favorites icons to be uniform. I tried rebooting and I also tried changing the icon through the properties button but I actually couldn't find the IE shortcut icon anywhere. I found the IE application icon but not the shortcut icon. Is this anything to be concerned about or is it just a Windows XP quirk that I have to live with. By the way, only certain websites have this problem.

Hello, A friend of mine installed the Mozilla browser and I didnt like it so I uninstalled it. Anyways to make a long story short..Since then,In the address bar (ie icon), and all my internet links (internet shortcuts) show as an unassigned file type now. So for instance if I drag an http link from my browser to my desktop...it does not show as an ie link anymore (just a random file type). So when I right click my internet links and say "open with" internet explorer it works. However...when I select the check box "always open with this program" it will not change all of my internet shortcuts appear with the "IE" icon like it should. Any suggestions??? Thanks

A:Solved: Internet explorer (shortcut) 6.0.2 icon problem

If you are using Windows XP, simply go to START, ALL PROGRAMS, ACCESSORIES, SYSTEM TOOLS and select SYSTEM RESTORE. Choose a date before you installed the Mozilla browser and perform the system restore. It may not be able to restore the system because you already deleted the program but it is certainly worth a try. Let us know...

I have been trying to change the default shortcut icon for IE. I have one I would like to use that is not just a page with an e. I would like to click a webpage > create shortcut and my icon will be there.

I went into HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT and changed a bunch of the DefaultIcon to my icon path. C:\Windows\Ico\online.ico

Some changed, but not not all. Some of the icons that did not change, I changed by hand and some go back to the default icon after I open the page.

I would like to replace the top one with the bottom icon.

Can anyone help me on this?

There are no group policies applied to the server.
How do I fix this?

Hi, the Internet Explorer icon just dissappeared from the windows bar on the bottom of the screen. Instead, a white blank icon replaced it. How can I get the normal icon back? Thanks for your feedback.

A:windows internet explorer icon dissappeared, replaced by white blank

Hello bakelite, and welcome to Seven Forums.

If the IE shortcut still works, then you might see if rebuilding the icon cache may help.

If not on both, then you could see if unpinning the icon, then pinning the iexplore.exe file below to your taskbar to recreate it may show better.

C:\Program Files (x86)\Internet Explorer\iexplore.exe

Hope this helps for now,

I've had a couple of problems doing searches in the past few days but most of them seem to be ok now. However, one thing hasn't returned and I know it's not a major problem but I would like to get it back. Previously when I did a search and the various websites are listed, they would show up with the relevant details including telephone numbers and the country flag beside the telephone number which easily showed where the website was based. However, the country flag details are not appearing anymore beside the telephone numbers. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks a lot.

Hello, everyone.

I was playing Diablo 2 today and my Internet Explorer 6 icon on my desktop (icon available in desktop settings, not a shortcut) seems to have reverted to something from Internet Explorer 4 or earlier.

I've tried re-applying the Windows XP theme (this worked for me on the original Diablo on my old PC when the start button did something similar) but no luck. I'm good at computing (e.g. I can edit the registry easily, follow instructions, I know quite a lot about XP) but I've never had a problem like this before. I'm gonna have to ask for help on this one.

Screenshot.

Any help would be excellent thanks. Also, I've had a similar problem on another computer when after installing IE7 the icon disappeared and went to the default XP "white-page" icon. It needed a registry edit to fix it; are they fixed in a similar fashion?

Thanks.

Doctor_Pepper, Right click your Desktop, choose Properties, under the Settings tab change the "Color Quality" from 32 bit to 16 bit, restart your computer then change it back to 32 bit. If this doesn't correct the problem download Tweak UI at the link below. After you install it you'll find it in Start>Programs>Powertoys for Windows XP>Tweak UI. Open it and under Repair then choose Rebuild Icons.

Hello Lloyd,

Double check with the yellow TIP box in the tutorial below to see if it may be a issue with a "Desktop.ini" file on the C: drive.

i cannot change the explorer icon nest to the start orb.I've downloaded the themes at deviantart and followed each and every steps..and use resHack also.but i still can't change it.Any idea?

A:cannot change explorer icon (icon next to start orb)

Should be able to just right click on the explorer icon, then right again where it says Windows Explorer, then Properties, change icon. Point to where the new icon you want to change to is, and apply. Might have to reboot for it to change.

Hi harikamat,

Hit Alt+T to access the tools window, and then click on the Compatibility View tab. Just add the website you can't view into the bar provided.

I noticed recently that all the icon thumbnails in programs (Corel, Adobe CS3) are all showing up as the generic broken link icon (a page with 3 shapes of different colors whereas should be the actual icon from the specific programs). I also noticed that in my music folders all the albums had a pile of thumbnails everywhere in each individual folder also there's this "thumbs.db" file showing up in each individual folder.

I'm a little bit confused as in what had happened and would like to know how to resolve it. I suspect is something to do with the registry error.
Any help would be appreciated.

Go into the properties of those and see if the icon is there in change icon and if it is try changing it to something else and then change it back and see if that fixes it.

Howdy,
I created an autoplay cd-rom for pc. In the root of the cd I have an AUTORUN.INF file that contains:

[autorun]
open=start.exe
icon=fscommand\mike.ico

The mike.ico icon is located in the fscommand folder.

The cd starts and autoplays as it should. However, the icon does not appear... a weird default icon appears. I cannot figure out what I am doing wrong. Any ideas?

Thanks,
Computerpain

I can't figure out why Foxit Reader is showing the pdf icons as generic like the one pictured below.
I tried Icon Cache Rebuilder and that didn't work.
Does anyone know how I can get the default Foxit icon to show for my pdf files?
Thank you.
Running Windows 7

A:PDF Icon Showing Generic

Hello Dawter -
There are 2 general ways to do this -
1. Un / Reinstall the program
2. Right click on the Icon and select Properties > Often there is an option to "Change Icon"
If you select option 2 a range of mainly Generic icons are offered to you - Select one of the offered items.
If this option is not offered, yours may just pop back, or you can use Option 1-

Thank You -

My usb icon does not show. Its not a big deal but it really annoys me when things dont work the way they are supposed to especially when they used to. This happened about a month ago. I turned on my laptop and bam, all of a sudden icons arent showing up and looking through forums i have fixed all but one. When i plug in any mass storage device (usb; flash drive, external hard drive, mp3 player) the icon shows a general icon as if the icon was missing. I have attatched a picture so you can see exactly what I am talking about. If anyone knows how to fix this it would be GREATLY appreciated.

hi Alex, and welcome to sevenforums,

If one or more of your icons are not displaying correctly, or that your icon cache is corrupted, then you might consider rebuilding the icon cache to reset and reload the icon images into the icon cache.

try this - and let us know if it worked.

you may have to reboot after doing it.

Hello.

I am running Windows XP SP2 and have a problem with the webpage icon shortcut. When I go to a given program using Start > All Programs > any program with a link to their web page, the icon displayed is the default document icon %SystemRoot%\system32\SHELL32.dll (1) and not the web browser icon IE or FF. I have to change these manually by finding the icon target and changing it for each program's webpage.

Is there a way to correct this where I don't have to manually change each one but where the change would apply to all program's webpage shortcuts? I would like for the webpage icons to display the FF icon.

Many thanks for any help.

A:Webpage icon not showing

Try right clicking on one and choose "Open With" and then "Choose Program". A list should appear. Select Firefox from the list and make sure the "Always open this type of file with this program" checkbox is selected. Then hit OK. See if that works.

So I'm having an issue with my Excel files only. For some reason the icon has changed to be a blue color and whenever I try to open the file it opens a notepad file.

Attached are some examples of the issue.

Hi all.

Had a bizarre problem since installing Windows 7 that I'm hoping can be solved relatively easily.

The SD card icon in Explorer has always just shown up as a generic unknown file type icon.

I've tried rebuilding the icon caches and assigning an icon manually but neither has worked.

Apart from that everything is working spiffingly, it's just this one niggling issue that's stopping it from being perfect.

Hope someone can help.

Cheers.
