Dell XPS 12 - Won't start / power up after hard reset

Q: Dell XPS 12 - Won't start / power up after hard reset

Last night I was using hard Won't / 12 up power Dell - after start XPS reset my XPS w in laptop mode on battery and it finally got down to of capacity nbsp At that point it shut off the screen and I moved to my office to connect the AC adapter thinking that it would simply turn the screen on when there was sufficient power nbsp The screen never came back I waited - minutes but the battery was charging nbsp At that point I attempted a hard reset by holding the power button in the on position for - seconds nbsp When I tried to power up nothing happened nbsp No backlit keyboard no screen nothing but the fan nbsp The light never came on in the switch either So I tried another hard reset with the same results nbsp I even tried powering up with the quot D quot key held down for on board diagnostics and got nothing but the fan startup I thought it might be an overheat issue so I let it set for an hour and tried again - nothing but the fan It appears that the laptop doesn t pass Dell XPS 12 - Won't start / power up after hard reset the initial diagnostics and won t even get to the point where the bios starts to load nbsp nbsp I truly thought my laptop was dead and ready for service nbsp I took it into the office the next day so I could call Dell Pro Support Just nbsp for giggles I plugged it in with the AC adapter and tried to turn it on - viola nbsp it started working again I had this problem once before and it started working after - hard resets I was working on a proposal when the laptop went down I tried hard resets over a hour period with no results It baffles me why it would start OK the next morning I was wondering if anyone else has had the same problem nbsp I m running the A BIOS the most current and my XPS is configured with GB of memory and GB SSD with an i processor and Intel wireless card Any suggestions on diagnosing this The hard part is when if fails the failure is total - you can t get to the diagnostics When it comes back everything is fine and there are no events in the event log that relate to the failure

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/directdownload.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

A: Dell XPS 12 - Won't start / power up after hard reset

OK - I've narrowed it down to the following:
When the laptop is "asleep" it eventually goes into power down mode. It appears that connecting a power adapter to the laptop at this point will cause it to go into a confused state where, when the power button is pushed, the laptop fan comes on but no light on the power button or on the keyboard - the screen stays blank. The laptop fan runs (it's very quiet - you have to hold the laptop up to your ear to hear it.)
I don't know if the cause is a low battery or if the problem is simply with the state of the CPU at power down. I just know that when it happens, it if I disconnect the power adapter and hold the power button until the laptop fan shuts off, the hard reset allows it to come back normally. If you leave the power adapter attached, it will charge the battery but will not allow the laptop to start.
I've repeated this experiment several times with the same result every time. I'm guessing there's a bug in the BIOS that sets an error state that won't clear with the power adapter attached. Doing the hard reset without the adapter appears to clear the problem reliably.

Dell N W wont start Dell logo gt black screen How to restore Hello friends Please could you advise me My friend has asked me to help with her Dell N Inspiron laptop She has had it for about just over a year now Dual-core Pentium GB RAM W bit She is not computer savvy and I dont know how shes managed to do this but heres the problem You press the power button The Dell logo appears along with the F amp F options for Setup amp Boot Options This is followed by a black screen with a blinking cursor in the upper left Thats it All this happens in the space of seconds power-up to black screen Nothing else happens no Windows logo screen start. N5030:W7 logo black Dell reset Dell wont how? screen. + Factory no Microsoft logo nothing Screen stays black with the cursor and the laptop instantly turns off when I press the power button My friend was desperate because she had over family photos and some important documents she didnt want to lose I was able to recover all of those using a Linux Mint live CD so at least shes all smiles for that Using Mint made me realize that the hardware was working perfectly The hard drive was good no mem faults and of course the optical drive was fine Dell N5030:W7 wont start. Dell logo + black screen. Factory reset how? So its something with Windows Also while using Mint I could clearly see the Dell Recovery Partition The problem is I dont know how to get the Inspiron to fire it up - because I cannot even get into Safe Mode where the quot Repair Dell N5030:W7 wont start. Dell logo + black screen. Factory reset how? your computer quot option is When I pressed F all that comes up is an option to tweak the boot order and a diagnostics option I ran the latter and it found no hardware faults at all I wasnt surprised I tried the usual tricks for trying to get it to begin the factory reset Stuff like CTRL F hold F down and then press power button keep pressed and then press power button All of these do the same thing - they just start the Diagnostic Tests My friend says Dell did not provide a Restore DVD because they told her quot it was all on the hard drive quot But they assumed that the user would be able to get to the Advanced Boot Options screen - which is not happening Pressing F results in the Insipiron once again running its diagnostics Safe Mode is not working How do I get this laptop to begin the factory reset Thanks very much for any help you can give

Product # N9T28AV (X360 15 inch convertibles)How do you do a "Hard Power Reset" as the battery is not accessible?...on older HP laptops with access to the battery, you would remove power plug, remove battery, hold the power button in for 30 seconds. Reassemble.I can find other reset references to different types of convertible devices but not the N9T28AVIf this is posted in the wrong section, please move to the correct locationIn anticipationThank you

A:Hard power reset

I asked HP about this earlier today.   There is no current documentation that describes how to hard reset an x360 notebook.   I have no idea as to how long it wil take before the Hard reset document is updated. As soon as it happens I will let you know.

Basically, I bought a new Thermaltake case and the front panel wires (5) are labeled power sw, reset sw, HDD led, power led +, and power led -. On many motherboards the connectors on the mobo are conveniently labeled to make attaching them a breeze. Unfortunately, this is not the case on the mobo that came with my Dell inspiron i purchased last year. It is labeled LEDH1 and has no hints in the Dell manual as to what is what.  This is driving me crazy.
The mobo DPN is 088DT1 but I can't find its manual.
Here's a picture of closeups of my mobo connectors, and my case connection cables.

ACQUIRED THE ABOVE MACHINE - INITIALLY WOULD NOT POWER ON UNTIL I DID A HARD RESET ---SHUT DOWN AND REINSTALLED THE BATTERY HOWEVER THE WHITE LED BY THE CHARGER JACK STAYS ON AND AS B4 WILL NOT POWER ON(GOOD BATTERY AND CHARGER) - THE ONLY WAY TO POWER UP IS TO REMOVE THE BATTERY AND START AND RUN OFF OF THE CHARGER - IT APPEARS TO BE A SYSTEM BOARD PROBLEM

I haven't had any problems with my Lenovo Z50-70 laptop - until this week. One day I couldn't turn on the laptop; I found that I have to do a hard reset (remove battery, hold the power button, put battery back in). However, now I have to do a hard reset to turn on my laptop every time I switch it off or even sleep/hibernate. Not only it takes time, but I am afraid that one day it just won't work.I am travelling until August, so I have no way to send or leave the laptop anywhere to get it fixed. Is there anything I can do myself?

When I got up to go get something I pulled the plug out and it of course shut down with no battery in it. Now it will not start again. I did the hard reset. Unplugged it and held down start button for 15 seconds, replugged in, but nothing. No lights on computer. AC adpater light is on. Thank you for any help!

I shut down my laptop today and went shopping. When I came home, it wouldn't turn on. This has happened a couple of times before and I've tried giving it a hard reset. I tried turning it on without the battery and just the power cord and nothing. The light where the power cord goes in is on when it is plugged in. I tried everything and still won't start. My warranty for this laptop is gone and don't know what else to try. Please help!

Hi @krakaholyknight, Thank you for your query. I am happy to lend a helping hand. To confirm that I have the correct product, yours is a HP Stream Notebook-11-d007na? I understand that your notebook was working when you shut it down. When you tried turning it on again it would not start. This has occurred a couple of times before and a hard reset  resolved the issue. You tried removing the battery but that did not help. You do see a light on the power port when connected to AC power.  Here is a link to HP Notebook PCs - Computer Does Not Start (Windows 10). Please let me know the outcome. If this has helped you to resolve the issue, please click on "Accept as Solution" on said post. Well My Dell Dimension c521 started having that Solid amber light issue and so I started testing and everything works as it should however I stil get the solid amber. So I set the PSU switch to off and put the Cmos jumper on reset and push the PSU switch to on and Success! the pc started and ran normally for hours. However every time I turn the PC off In order to restart it I have to reset the CMOS which annoys me because I lose all my settings and My Graphics drivers get resetted back to that Standard VGA Graphics driver from Microsoft. Any Ideas? It all started when I removed and re installed my Proccesor.

I have a Dell Inspiron 9100. I have checked the adapter/charger and it is putting out he correct 19V.

However, the LED lights on the battery do not indicate anything. After charging for 10 hours, I push the power button and nothing happens....no screen activity, whirling, noise, etc.

I have tried starting with adapter connected and not connnected.

Could a battery be so dead that the computer will not turn on?

Or is it the MB or bios?

Thanks.

A:Dell will not start, power adapter okay

Try removing the battery and starting the laptop using only the AC adapter. If you still get nothing, the motherboard is most likely bad

A:Dell Optiplex 780 (DT) auto start for a few seconds when turn on power strips!

That's perfectly NORMAL!
When you turn on the power strip, the PC thinks it's recovering from a power failure. So it powers itself up to check to see how the BIOS power option is set for recovery from a power failure.
If BIOS is set to "Do nothing", PC turns itself off again.
If BIOS is set to "Restart after power failure", it automatically boots without you having to press the power button.
So if you're lazy, you can set BIOS to reboot automatically after power failures. And when you turn the power strip on, the PC boots and you won't have to press the power button.

I've had a Dell Latitude D630 for over 6 years. I bought a used Dell Latitude E6400 off eBay, but when I put the hard drive from my D630 in it, it would not boot into Windows. It would run until the colored balls started to rotate it would flash a quick blue screen of death and pop into the Window startup repair. The startup repair ran for a while but said it could be repaired, I thought it was fix, but it reboot and did the same thing again. Why. I'd like to use my old hard drive if possible. I had the startup repair pop up every once in a while on the D630, but it never was able to fix it and I didn't try a restore. Any help would be appreciated.

A:Windows Will Not Start After Moving Hard Drive from Dell D630 to E6400

It would help to list the specs of the two units for comparison.

Usually this is a driver problem. Try entering into Safe Mode via F8 as Windows begins to boot. If it works, disable any driver that doesn't pertain to the new machine. Especially critical is the video driver.

You can also try the VGA option at F8.

If not, access the bios of the two machines, and make sure the new machine is set to the same SATA setting - ACHI or IDE - as the original machine.

System is running horrible slow. The hard drive light is on solid for 2 seconds, blinks off, on again for 2 seconds etc..
I tried to use system restore to go back to am earlier date. After I selected the date it said it was starting restore but would never start. I tried the same in safe mode and via a windows 7 recovery CD. Same results.
I then ran a full checkdisk on the hard drive. It got stuck during part 4 of file on checking files.
I'm now running a full hard drive surface scan via partition wizard.
Note this happened a month ago..exactly the same problems . I gave up and re installed a fresh copy of windows.
Everything was good until now.
What can I do? Please help!

A:dell runs super slow. hard drive light always on. system restore won't start.

From what you have posted it looks like there could be a problem with the HDD.

Please download and run SeatTool for Windows.

When the website opens scroll down till you find the I Accept button and click on it.

If you scroll down below this button you will find instruction for installing this.

Once you install this program you will see an image similar to the one below.

1.  SeaTools for Windows will search for hdds on your computer.  Please remove any external storage devices connected via USB port.

2.  Detected Drives will list the hdd/s found.  Place a check mark in the drive you want to run the scan on.

3.  You will see Basic Tests above Detected Drives, move the mouse pointer over this.

4.  A menu will open with options for different scans, please click on Long Generic Test

5.  This will start the scan.  When the scan is complete you will see the result under Test Status , please post the results in your topic.

6.  When the scan is complete you will see Test results, post the status.  If it is green it has passed the scan.

7.  Click on Help, then click on View Log File.  If the scan failed take a screen shot of the Log File and post it in your topic.

Hi,
In reference to the following posting, http://en.community.dell.com/support-forums/laptop/f/3518/t/19676126:
I am not the individual who initiated this query but I did have the same issue with my Dell Inspiron 5547, where it wouldn't turn on after a power button shut down.
I followed Hema's instructions by removing the battery and charger and then holding down the power button for a few seconds, and then putting back the parts. It seemed to have done the trick... At least for now. Is this just a temporary fix?
While doing a Google search for a solution I seem to have encountered a number of people who experienced the same issue. Can you also explain why this happens with this particular Dell laptop? Is it a model flaw?
Thank you

Hi,
I own a dell service class machine R-720. In general , the system should display the boot sequence messages during start up . Like DELL logo followed by hard disk, memory details and network card/ Other hardware details etc. Isn't it?
But my machine is not showing any such on screen messages while booting. It stay blank till it enters the desktop screen. What could be the exact cause and solution for this problem? Because of this, I am not able to choose the boot options or anything during boot up. Hoping for a solution to this case.
Thanks in Advance.

Hello, first off I'm new. Second and the reason for this post is that I work on PC. I do system reloads, rebuilds, and build new custom systems. I would like to know if any body knows how to delete all accounts and start the account wizard that runs when Windows starts for the first time. The reason for this is that I have to make an account to install drivers, programs, etc.. before the end user receives the final product. I would like a way to delete all accounts and start the account wizard, like it does for the first time run of Windows, for the end user. Any help would be great. Also, if this is in the wrong place, please direct me to the correct category. THANKS!!!

Why not just create a new admin account in the owner's name, delete the one you made, then let the customer add others as required.

recently bought a Dell Inspiron 14 5459 on June 12, 2016 and first thing I noticed is that to turn on the laptop I need to press and hold down the power button at least for 3 seconds in order for the laptop to boot up, this seems strange, I brought up this issue at the Dell Store where I bought the laptop and the sales people there told me that they noticed this in most Inspiron models.  Is this normal?

I have a Dell 8600 about two years old. When I plug in the AC adapter, it intermittently fades to the battery as though the plug was pulled out (its not) and of course the screen fades in an out when every time it swithces--it does it every 30 to 60 seconds or so. I switched to a different AC adapter (I have a Dell 600M with the same AC adapter)-same thing so I know it is something internally. Any ideas?

So is the 1620 not compatible with this model?

Hi recently my Dell 2330 wont boot up properly. I press the power button and the light comes on the button and i hear the fan. The screen is a brighter black then after a few seconds the screen seems to go off but still power and fan running. Ive spoken to Dell and done all what they asked. Then today out the blue it came on as normal. I went to run a diagnostics test from a link Dell sent me and it asked me to restart the computer. I did and then it  did what it did before and has not come back on since. They have said it could be the motherboard. Any other suggestions ? Thanks

Hi,

Am new here but long-time Windows uses since Win95.
Currently have a DELL E6530 and it gave me a BSOD Event 41 Error while on batteries! Looking around Google and other forums, this transpires to be a PSU related problem, but it's a laptop, and was running on batteries at the time the BSOD happened. System was idling at the time. Running Win 7 Pro 64, as supplied by DELL.

Thanks in advance for any input...

Kind regards

Just got a dell inspiron running vista home premium 64. works fine, except each morning the power button is blinking blue and unit has to be unplugged- mouse does not wake it, pressing power button kicks all the cooling fans into high gear, but nothing more. i suspect that this happens when unit goes into sleep or hibernate mode. under 'power plan', "dell recommended" is checked.

ideas?

thank-you for any expert advice that you can offer

A:Dell- blinking power button- vista power mgmt?

Is it a desktop or Laptop?

Dell desktops are well known to have dodgy power units (hardware) installed.

Have you tried a cold reboot to see what happens?.....If you continue to have power issues call the Dell customer support and they'll send you a new power supply (for desktop).

Not sure about the laptops though.

The system's fan was very loud so I put in a new power supply and then everything booted up fine. Unfortunately, that didn't solve the problem. It was the Motherboard fan making all the noise.

So, I put the old power supply back in and now the system doesn't power up at all. I checked all connections & I replaced the power cord and tried a different electrical outlet.

I even put the new P/S back in and nothing changed. It still doesn't power up. It's dead!

Any suggestions?

Do you mean the CPU fan ?
If so then I wonder if the CPU has been cooked

I would start by dispersing all internal voltage.
Detach the power cord
Press the power button in for 20 seconds
Re=attach the power cord
Try again

If it didn't fix then remove all addons, usb devices really anything attached (except screen and keyboard and power cord)
And try again

If it didn't fix then, confirm all internal connections are secure (even detach the dvd drive{s}

If it didn't fix then try disconnecting all fans (what !) for about 10 secs (turning on) I once had a fan of all things, that stopped my computer from turning on (unbelievable, I know)

Lastly, check the CPU for heat damage !

My son took apart our computer. Trying to put it back together. Forgive me. I am a total novice when it comes to computers. I don't know what motherboard I have or basically anything else. Don't know if there are standard ways of hooking these wires up or not. Just wondering how to install the wires that say:
power sw
reset sw
power led
hdd led
About the only one I can figure out is the speaker wire. When sitting with the cpu in front of you the speaker wire goes in the top left set of pins.
Sorry I can't give you more help than this.
I really appreciate it. If no one knows, I appreciate ANY assistance at all. I appreciate you putting up with what might be a dumb question.
Thanks.

A:Power SW & Reset SW

Usually in the bottom right (if you are looking at it in the case, and the case is a tower) you will see a line of pins looking like this ::::::::::::::::: Also if you look closely (use reading glasses or a hand lens or a magnifying glass if you need) the pins should be labeled, it should be fairly obvious then which pins go where.

Try that first, and if you can't figure it out, then you need to do a few more things and post back:
1 - Is this a store brand computer? (dell, hp, compaq, gateway, ect) If so what model?
2 - If this isn't a store brand computer then look on the motherboard, there is a really high chance somewhere on it it says what brand and its model number.
3 - This is stretching it a bit (but may help if you can find motherboard brand but not model). Do you know if you have an AMD or Intel processor, and also the speed if you know that.

Depends on the manufacturer of the computer.

Try F11 or read the logo screen when you turn it on and it will say something like F10 = setup, F11 = recovery

You want the recovery option. It is not F8 on any machine.

I bought a used HP Envy 700-210xt from a guy who was selling it cheap because he couldnt fix it. I got it and it has a power on password protecting it. I tried to reset the Bios by removing the CMOS battery for about 45 min,  also tried to do a reset by holding down the Windows key and the B button down as instructed but it would just stay stuck on black screen. When I powered off and powered back up it would back to the Black screen with the blue power on password box. I even tried to jump the CMOS PW as I read online but that did not fix the issue either.

A:How to Reset a Power On password

Hi: If there is a clear P/W jumper (and it looks like there may be one on the motherboard because I see a picture of a couple tiny blue jumpers), see if this works... Shut down and unplug the PC. Move the clear P/W jumper one pin over.  From the pictures it looks like it can only be moved one way. Plug in and turn on the Pc.  The BIOS P/W should now be cleared. Shut down and unplug the PC. Move the clear P/W jumper back to its original position. Plug in and power on the PC. Done.

Everything works OK afterwards. Reset function still works on the button though. Any ideas what to do and what could be the problem? Thanks

A:Power/Reset button

You will have to look at a diagram of what each connector is for. They vary a lot and just because 2 particular connectors on one board are for power or reset doesn't mean that the same ones will be used on a different board. Though the polarity doesn't matter for the switches, you have to make sure it is right for LED's or they won't work.

Hi!  The 840 G3 appears to have a battery compartment that is secured by screws.  Sometimes there is a combination of keys that can be pressed that will simulate the function of a power reset (powering the laptop down, removing the battery, pressing the power button for a length of time to drain capacitors, replacing battery, and powering up) so that users don't have to remove the battery.  I've googled and found some key combinations for other HP products but can't find one for the 840 G3.  Does anyone know of one? Thanks!

Hi, Thank you for posting in the HP Support forum. Welcome! I am not 100% sure if I understand you but I'll try to help. As mentioned by you and as confirmed by the product's manual, it comes with non-removable fixed battery. May be you want to perform hard reset to power off the computer >> https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5NJQM8vJa9Q Why do you want to perform this you write about ? Is there some issues with Windows ? If so, have you tried restarting it (instead of Shut down) ?  Because in Windows 8/8.1/10 this process is by default different from what it was in Windows XP/Vista/7.

I just installed an Asus P T mobo in an Antec with an i and I am having problems with the sw reset / power with Problem system panel connector power sw you know the thing with the power ground and reset ground that plugs into the case power reset wires If the case sits for a long length of time it won t power up I hit the power button and it doesn t do anything It s been doing this Problem with power / reset sw since the first power up after installation To fix the problem although temporarily I have to pull the system panel connector adapter out replug the reset wire the power wire and the led wire and plug the adapter back in Problem with power / reset sw Once I unplug it and refit all the wires it boots right up It doesn t happen in short intervals however I can shut the system down wait a few seconds and it ll power right back up Finally after I refit all the plugs on the system panel connector I have to change the boot order on my hard drives Don t know if this is related though nbsp

A:Problem with power / reset sw

Instead of unplugging the panel connectors from the motherboard, try switching the power off at the back of the power supply for a couple of minutes. Of course, the PC should be powered off at the time. Turn the switch on the PSU back on and see if it will start.

A:NB100 no usb power - how to reset

Hi

In your case I would recommend removing the USB port /controller /hub from device manager.
Just simply go to device manager, expand the USB controller area and delete all the devices which are available in this area.

After new reboot, the system (Win XP in your case) should recognize the USB ports and the driver should be installed again.
Then reboot once again connect an USB device and check if this helps?

Just for info: the USB 2.0 ports provide 500mA? so in some cases the external USB device would not be detected when such device would need more than the usual 500mA. In such case such device should be connected to two USB ports using an Y USB cable or should use an external power source as some USB hubs do.

Hello
I have a Linksys WRT54G and I have a problem. I like to plug out my main power cabel from the power outlet when I go to bed and when I turn it back on in the morning and switch my computer on I need to reset my router so it can work (otherwise the internet icon has a yellow exclamation mark)
(also my router is connected to my computer via cabel)
I don't think that is normal. Why does the router stop working after losing power?
(it doesn't lose its settings but I need to reset it to fix it)
How can I fix this?
Thanks.

No Headbuster it is not normal, Most of the routers that I deal with do keep their settings when the power is removed and restored.

What might be happening is that the router has not completed it's startup routines and connecting to your ISP before your computer keeps asking for an IP.

I recommend that you plug in the router a few minutes before you turn your computer on and see if then your pc picks up an ip properly.

What you might be experiencing is hurrying the router when it is not ready.

A:Power reset now, PC won't turn on at all

We just had a nice line of storms come through a few weeks ago.

I was extremely busy replacing motherboard and PSU combos on various customer computers, mind you after having fixed them, I STRONGLY recommended they buy a decent surge protector.

Turns out all but one were running straight out the wall.

I've come across one scenario where the motherboard survived a PSU failure, luckily for me that was mine about a month ago.

Generally a PSU fails, it takes the motherboard with it, if you have any other motherboard that will jive with your hardware, swap it out.

I can't search anything. So I tried to reset my computer, and this "virus" won't let me. It closes all my settings whenever i go to the reset page. It does the same thing on airplane mode too. I deleted all the files I could involved with the emulator. Still it's roaming around. How do I get rid of it? Like this just is uneccessary. you can also modify the asset tag and the owner tag with asset.com

Usage:
ASSET new_asset_tag Specify new asset tag
ASSET /d Delete asset tag
ASSET /o new_owner_tag Specify new owner tag (if applicable)

Hi.
Due to my inspiron15 Dell laptop running extremely slow, I did a factory reset to original factory settings. It worked fine and the laptop came with Windows 8. I decided to upgrade to Windows 10 using the free one still available from Microsoft for people who use disability functions (my mum uses magnifications). However, when turning on it gets stuck on the Dell Logo page with no bar underneath. I have attempted another factory restore as I have managed to get it to run automatic repair but it says that the partition has changed and there is no restore point to work from and won't let me continue. Can you please suggest what I may do to fix this problem?

Take a look at the last image you posted for me. I would move the jumper on the header from its current position to the  second set  from the top to see if it clears the password. Give it an arbitrary amount of time, say 5-10 seconds, return it to the original position and then check to see if that cleared the password.

The systems use different case and mainboard designs -- and may even be made by different companies.  The answer in all likelihood is no.
I don't think Apple has produced a Macbook with a power indicator -- the PC vendors are playing follow Apple.

Hello, I already have my important docs and files saved to external storage devices, so I am trying to reset my laptop to factory settings. The problem is, my F8 and F11 keys do NOT work. As in, they are no longer functional. I have several keys on my laptop that do not work due to several incidents over the years and unfrtunately, these two are part of that group. It is a Dell Inspiron E1705. I also do not hav the original discs that came with the laptop. Thanks in advance for your assistance!

A:How do I factory reset my Dell laptop?

If the hard drive has a Recovery Partition in Disk Managment you may be able to get it to boot using the bootable version of Partition Wizard and setting the Recovery Partition as Active. You need to burn the iso file with either Imgburn or Isoburner. Reboot the computer and the Recovery Partition may boot but sometimes this workaround does not work. When you set the Recovery Partition as Active make sure your System Partition is not also set to Active. If this does not work in order to get the computer to boot back to XP change your System Partition to Active.
