I am upgrading from Win7 to Win10 but it seems stuck at starting download?

Q: I am upgrading from Win7 to Win10 but it seems stuck at starting download?

I think I started the download about 2 hours ago, but its still at the same screen that says starting download. Is this normal?

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

A: I am upgrading from Win7 to Win10 but it seems stuck at starting download?

Doing an actual live in-place upgrade from 7 to Windows 10 using the Windows Update method (where it downloads everything necessary to do the upgrade and not using an ISO with local files or the Media Creation Tool) will take some time. If necessary, cancel or stop the process, log out, reboot, and try again if you feel it's taking an inordinate amount of time - actual live in-place upgrades will be slower than one done with local installation files.

It's just how it goes, slowly and relatively surely. If you feel it's taking way way too long, use the Media Creation Tool, get the ISO, burn it or put the contents on a USB stick (using the tool itself) and then do the upgrade from that media which will go much faster (given you can actually download the necessary files, of course).

I have 4 PCs; I was able to upgrade 3, but the fourth one the desktop I couldn't upgrade it.
I followed all the workarounds and solution were offered I downloaded the Windows Creation Tool
and still cannot update.
If I upgrade through Windows Update then it stops at ( Check your PC before upgrading )
and if I run it through the Windows tool it doesn't run at all !!
What should I do?

I would describe my Win7 system as 95% healthy, not 100%, but it runs more or less as I want it to.
But now I'm going to upgrade to Win10, while I still can for free, before the June 29 deadline..
In preparation for this, I just created a disk image of my Win7 system, just in case things go horribly wrong on the upgrade.
Is it advisable to go to the trouble to repair Win7 (at which point I could create a 2nd disk image for safekeeping), before upgrading to Win10?
Or will Win10 just install in pristine condition, even though Win7 ISN'T in pristine condition?

A:Questions About Upgrading: Win7 -> Win10

1) Maybe.
2) Mostly.
3) Probably.
4.) If you install 10 as an upgrade, a windows.old directory will be created, allowing you to revert to 7. That is only good for 30 days, though.
5) Varies.

Two recommendations:

1) Don't upgrade to Windows 10 if you have critical applications for which you lack installation media.
2) If you upgrade anyway, image your Windows 7 installation first. (I haven't used it personally, but Macrium Reflect Free is popular.) That will save you a lot of trouble if the upgrade goes wrong. Especially if you have no means of clean installing 7.

I have a Win-7 Pro laptop. I have a duplicate of the system drive for backup purposes.
If I were to accept the update to Win 10, would I be able to use Win-7 (restored from the duplicate drive), or would the fact of updating the OS mark my existing Win-7 license invalid (somewhere inside MS' servers), and the system will start barking some time soon that it is not "genuine", etc.?

Some Windows editions are not eligible for the free Windows 10 upgrade. These include Windows RT/RT 8.1, Windows 7 Enterprise and Windows 8/8.1 Enterprise. The Enterprise editions are geared toward large organizations, which typically have their own licensing agreements with Microsoft.

First question. What exactly is on the flash drive? Is it just the ISO file itself (one file), or is it the extracted contents of the ISO file (a Windows setup folder structure, with a setup.exe file in the root folder)?

Second, is the flash drive formatted as FAT32?

When trying to download the Win10 upgrade, it first takes me to Windows Update. It says "Check your PC before upgrading. Before installing Windows 10 Insider Preview, something needs your attention." and presents a "Check your PC" button. When I click the button, it cranks for about 5 minutes and comes back to the same message and same button.

Is there a log somewhere where it tells me what it's complaining about? If not, it appears I won't be able to get to Win10. I'm running 8.1 Pro now.

I'm hoping this is the right forum area for Win 7 as I have in-installed win 10.

Its on a sony E series laptop which is several years old. Windows wants to do a startup repair and i'm in a loop.

I viewed the on-screen diagostics. It says windows has failed. A recent hardware or software change might be the cause.

I have both options without success.
1) Launch startup repair,
2)start windows normally.

When I run the 1st option computer says "Startup cannot repair this computer

I'm not sure what to do?
I do have a windows 7 repair disk, but it doesn't seem to have any effect.
And the system recovery options dont work either.

I search the web for other options and used Ubuntu 16.04 LTS and look like I can see the file so the hard drive is ok so far.

Any suggestions on what to do next.

I had reserved the free upgrade to win10 some months ago. I got tired to the constant update window so I removed KB305583. Afterwards I notice that there are still a number of entries in the registry for GWX and a few file directories pertaining to GWX that I cant delete. Now when windows update tells me that I have updates and I allow them to start (nineteen win7 and office security updates) the first thing that it tries to do is install the win10 setup files which causes me to abort the update process. I have checked the 19 important updates and none of them are about win10. I do not want to install win10 at this time. How can I stop the win10 update from trying to install?

A:win7 update wants to download win10 setup files

I had the same issue and even after removing every possible gwx and related windows updates it still showed that it was gonna download windows 10 in the updater, however after giving up and just letting it run it said downloading setup files, then after about 15 seconds it said creating restore point and then it was done. It didn't actually install anything that I can tell for windows 10. After that my windows updates showed normally.

Part3 = ext3-Extended (logical)

Part2 win7 got buggered, and reinstalled (nvidia chip-set melt down during win7 boot). The MB was replaced.

I can no longer get to win10 boot Part1. Booting to Part1 or Part2 results to booting the newly installed win7. Rafaela boot did not change: still working.

you are supposed to be able to upgrade with a clean install and enter the W7 Key , according to the new media tool
However, i would probably want to make sure w7 is fully updated before installing W10
maybe make a recovery dvd on one of the pcs - so you can restore the PC back to factory settings and try

mukul786 Hello;Allow me to welcome you to the HP forums!Enterprise Editions are intended ONLY to be used by commercial operations -- hence the name Enterprise.  The only LEGAL way to acquire and install Enterprise editions is through a company, which typically makes those available to their employees through Home Use Programs  (HUP) those companies have negotiated with Microsoft. Those same companies, because of the HUP terms, are required to then support those users in terms of upgrades. If, in fact, you have an Enterprise edition, the ONLY way you can upgrade it is through the company that furnished you that software in the first place. Enterprise Editions are not available for consumer purchase. MS is sending upgrade notices in several waves apparently depending on things like driver availability and whether or not you participated in the Beta. I got tired of waiting and seeing all those "Windows 10 update failed" messages in Windows Update (I think these might indicate that Windows Update was downloading the install file bits at a time) so I manually downloaded and installed the upgrade.

I see all the posts about how upgrading the motherboard or a few components at once will deactivate a Win10 install- I'm just wondering about the CPU alone.

I'm building a friend a new PC and have an older CPU lying around- I'm wondering if I should stick with the older CPU or just buy a better one now, being that the free Win10 upgrade will come to an end at the end of the month? Everything works fine on my Win8.1 laptop with Classic Shell installed, with everything as I want it.

When I eventually update to Win10 will the layout I currently have change in any way, including Classic Shell layout and settings?

Will I be able to start Firefox with the last saved session (I should be able to as I use the 'session manager' plugin)?

A:When upgrading to Win10, will I lose the layout I have?

That is a definite maybe!

In most cases everything should be the same except for software that is not compatible with Windows 10 or pirated software which Windows 10 will delete.

The best way to upgrade to Windows 10 is to create an image backup of your existing setup to an external hard drive using a program like Macrium Reflect Free. Then if anything goes wrong you can restore back to where you started in 20 minutes or so.

I'd recommend uninstalling Classic Shell before the upgrade then reinstall the latest version after the upgrade completes.

A:Is it worth upgrading to Win10 from Win8.1?

You have about 30 days to switch back if you don't like it, which is a good thing.

Firstly - You may lose your data due to unforeseen errors. It's a rare occurrence, but you don't want to be a statistic.

Secondly - In a lighter vein, Windows 10 is the biggest Junkware in the world. Be careful when you try to remove Potentially Unwanted Programs, Windows 10 doesn't get removed.

Thirdly - Are you aware that Microsoft wants Windows 10 to aggressively collect as much data about you as possible? This is no different from what Google and others do, obviously, but the exploits and their data collection policies are alarming. If you're privacy conscious, you may want to tweak a few settings during the installation. If you're paranoid about a company's data collection policies - Use a Guide to reduce privacy risk.

It also depends on what kind of computer you have, really. Is it a touchscreen? Are most of your important software Windows 10 compatible?

Everyone on here can give you great advice - better than mine, frankly. They'll list all the pros and cons more accurately, but it really depends on how you feel about using it. Are you comfortable with it? Do you like the smoothness and the interface and the settings? You have to decide it yourself within a month. Nobody can decide better than you yourself, no matter what we say, really.

Like it or hate it, Windows 10 is a good product despite its many exploits, bugs, data policies and flaws.

A year ago I bought a Lenovo Yoga 2 that came with Windows 8.

Unfortunately, I upgraded to Windows 10 several months ago. It has been such a nightmare I want Windows 8 back.
Can I just buy a new copy of Windows 8.1 and clean install it on my laptop? Someone told me once its been upgraded to Windows 10 that I can't do that, but that just doesn't seem right.

I'm not very savvy when it comes to doing a reinstall. I'm not sure what to buy and I want to make sure trying this won't brick my computer. OEM, Full, etc seems like there is so many things to consider when trying to buy just a regular old version of Windows 8.1.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

A:Can I do a clean install of Win8.1 after upgrading to Win10?

Check whether you have a recovery partition. You could reset to 8.1 from there without any problems with the key, etc. You have a legal 8.1 system. No need to buy an 8.1 key.

That's basically my question. I'm planning to upgrade my Win7 laptop to Win10 next week and I'd like to know if there is an option for clean install (Delete all files, fresh windows settings, old windows moved to "windows.old" folder) from Windows Update or do I have to download Windows 10 Media Creation tool?

A:Does Upgrading to Win10 from WU have clean install option?

There is a special procedure for doing a clean install without having to go through the upgrade process. Is this what you are looking for?

I've just bought a second-hand Asus 'Transformer' T100. This comes with Win8.1 and I would like to upgrade to 10. When I run the app it tells me I need more space. The tablet has 32GB in the screen (C:) and 500GB in the detachable keyboard (D:).
Obviously not all the 32GB is available but there's nothing I can remove as it's had a factory reset.
The online help I find tells me that the upgrade process should ask me to add external storage to enable the install but this is just not happening. It just keep telling me I don't have enough space. I have a USB stick I could use or (ideally) the 500GB HD in the keyboard.
Can anyone offer any help? (Bear in mind I am not very technical)

Hey there, I'm currently having helix 1st gen and some time ago I've downgraded from Win10 to Win8.1, because it was full of buggs (audio not working, wi-fi signal frequent drops and etc). Some time passed (~ 4months) and I'm considered about getting back to Win10. Is it worth?

A:Helix 1gen worth upgrading to win10?

Welcome to Lenovo Community.
I upgraded my Helix Gen 1 to Windows 10 recently. I have had no problems except that I had to reinstall my old Dell printer. (That was no surprise because it was made for XP.) No issues now though. Beforehand I made sure all of the Lenovo drivers for Helix Gen 1 were updated.  I decided not to update the BIOS to the next version because it had already been updated one version after I got the Helix. All computers are configured differently by the owner, but in my case everything went smoothly. Good luck!

My Windows 10 version 1511 is set to download and install updates automatically but this morning, the updates download got stuck at 0% for a long time. Even after a reboot, it would not budge.
Do you guys have the same problem here?

Maybe during the downloading of the updates, I had turned off my notebook, so would that have a negative effect on the way the updates are downloaded or in process of downloading?
So for example, next time if there is a Windows Update and the downloads are in progress, is it OK to turn off my machine while Windows 10 is downloading the patches or security updates?

The only way I could recover from this mess, is that I read these steps from the below link.
? ??? -updates

But overall in general, the way Win10 handles these updates is a PURE MESS, and I hope in Redstone, this will be fixed.
I never had these issues in Win7...

A:Win10 Updates stuck downloading

I had a hard time updating my 10586 (1511) Version so I let it update and download over night. DON'T !! it also downloaded the "Feature update", meaning the anniversary update and tried to install that. I interrupted the update so Windows will be forced to go back to the 1511 Version.
Whenever a new cumulative update is available, I made it a habit to download it from the catalog:
Microsoft Update Catalog

that way I do not rely on the Windows update and can do that even disconnected from the web.. Has always worked for me...

This machine was running Win7, Downloaded Win 10 from the website, great, everything working OK. Went to instal my printers and scanner, then things started to go wrong. To cut a long story short, I am now in the position of having the machine boot up, goes through the motions, then exhibits a screen offering me a choice of keyboards ! Nothing I can do to make it change its mind. It's stuck in a loop and I can't find a way of altering it. Any suggestions will be gratefully received. How do I get into Safe mode, or break the loop ? If I had a Win10 disk I could go to "Repair" but with a straight download this is not possible. Thanks.

I have three computers in family that were given upgrades on the win7 family plan. One was just informed it was eligible for win10 upgrade. I think I made the mistake of custom install (for a clean install) instead of an upgrade and, related to other problems with windows update, I might have lost my activation on win7. Long story short, when I got to the point where win10 was installed and asking for a key I knew I had done a no no as, if I had done it correctly, I should not have been asked for a key. Of course I have no key but the win7 key and the install just sits there with no options but to input the key, which I don't have. What's my best course of action here?
thanks in advance

I have two identical work laptops "HP Elitebook", I upgraded(Clean installation) the first one to Windows 10 Pro 64bit, and the thing is that I don't want to do the upgrade process again.

1- Is it possible to clone the hard disk of the upgraded one, then copy it to the second laptop without having any activation problems?

2- What software is best to do this? I wish if I can copy the clone data to an external drive, then use a bootable version of the clone software on the second one to apply the cloned data.

I understand that I need to change these things on the second laptop after cloning:
1- reactivate using its own windows product key.
2- change pc name.

A:Cloning disk on two Laptops, avoiding win10 upgrading twice.

I would not recommend a clone of any OS onto a different system as even seemingly identical systems may have slight variations in the components used that are enough to cause issues.

Then choose language and keyboard.

Then Troubleshoot -> Advanced options ->Automatic Repair.

Hope it helps.... if not, you may need to recover the notebook back to factory settings...

Yayy, I finally bought myself a laptop. Not quite the one I wanted but close enough to keep me happy.

HP dv6 pavillion
AMD Phenom II N930 Quad-Core Processor 2.00 GHz
4.00GB Dual Channel DDR3 RAM
HP 1440 (Socket S1G4) motherboard
64 bit OS
ATI Mobility Radeon HD 5650
AMD M880G with ATI Mobility Radeon HD4250

As usual these are already installed with OS, and all the useless software. I purchased a second Windows 7 Professional disk and wish to install it on the lappie. My question is can I upgrade or would it be better to do a fresh install?
As the laptop is under warranty, do I need to keep all the HP rigmarole, if so then I would use window easy transfer and could that be added back after installing Win7 professional?

Thank you for any advice
Warm regards,

A:Upgrading from Win7 home to Win7 professional

It is best to format and do a clean install. You will be much better off than using an easier method. All that bloat will be gone.
Congrats on the new computer, I know the great feeling, when it is new.

Regarding the warranty. If they want to play hard ball, they can claim that you made changes and that the warrnaty is void.

I suggest that you back up the OS that you have now, you can use macrium reflect and then restore it if needed. The problem may be that you cannot get into the computer to make the change when necessary.

I had been backing up my Win10 system with the above to an external USB3 drive which I don't power power up all the time. All of a sudden File History and WinBackup (using the allowed control panel Win7 backup and restore) stopped functioning because the "external drive had not been used in a long time". I corrected File History by changing the parameters as MS advised but the backup function no longer works. Is this fixable? My PC is an HP i5, 8G, 256 SSD, running Win10 Pro 64. Acronis backed up fine to "My Backups" on the external drive, but I would like to continue with the Win7 program.

A while ago I installed Win7 games on Win10 using msgames_win8_x64.msi as mentioned in thread Hearts and Solitaire Games in Windows 10 - Windows 10 Forums I wondered if this was legal but did it anyway. Installing the TH2 update removed the games. I installed them again, but this is starting to bother my conscience. Does Microsoft consider these games "pirated" or "unauthorized"? If not, why did the maintenance delete them?

A:Win7 games on Win10

This is simply to do with the way the TH2 update is implemented. It's virtually a new Windows installation, and creates a Windows.old folder. Because your games are presumably installed within folders which are part of the OS, I would expect they have been left behind in the Windows.old folder and not copied across.

As a side note, it has been found that some user installed programs (just a very few) have been uninstalled by the update, where MS has deemed these are incompatible.

Just reinstall them if you wish.

Can Win 10 be pulled off of a new machine and replaced with Win 7? Or is there something that will prevent Win 7 from running on it (would be a Dell Inspiron, most likely).

A:Replace Win10 with Win7

If it has secure boot enabled it may stop it you would have to disable it. If you put 7 on it will start downloading win 10 you also need to be sure you can get drivers for 7 before you do it. Give 10 ago before you jump ship you can set to work mostly like 7

So the primary issue is this: My motherboard is old enough that there are no windows 10 drivers for it.

A LAN has two win pro pcs a new win Home laptop replacing an older machine and other laptops The two win pro pcs and access pcs pc lan on to from win10 win7 the new win laptop form a development access to win10 pc from win7 pcs on lan system for database app webapp software and must be able to create amp write files to most any access to win10 pc from win7 pcs on lan folder on any of the three machines anytime Essentially we must be able to treat these three machines as if they were just one machine with several drives run by multiple instances of an admin user That's how we work I can hear the corporate intakes of breath For this request lose that mindset we're a family not a corporation When the win laptop was configured and introduced to the network a few weeks ago we managed to persuade it---against its corporate wishes---to allow such access without authentication requests Now the win instance has updated itself and since then both win pcs encounter username amp password requests on attempting to access the win laptop's drive c That stops us cold Worse when the username amp password are entered we meet a further Orwellian requirement for a password for the drive on win machine from which the request was made How do we defeat these ludicrous requirements

You might think Microsoft would respect user settings. No such luck.

In the new win10 laptop I'd turned off password protected sharing in "Network and Select Properties". The Windows 10 update turned it back on!

So to fix this:

Right click on Network and select Properties.
Click on Change advanced sharing settings at left.
Click the down arrow next to All Networks at the bottom.
Select Turn off password protected sharing.
Click the Save changes button.

Thank you Microsoft. Not.

Hey HardForum I m still running my rig from early see sig and had planned on upgrading near the end of I admit I haven t given much thought to which version of Windows to run except that I had no intention of running Windows But I heard Win10? Computer - Win7 or New that Kaby Lake motherboards might somehow not allow Windows to run Is that accurate And honestly I m a little concerned with running Windows in terms of it New Computer - Win7 or Win10? being compatible I ve still got one or two programs that I have to run on Windows XP on my old machine I see reviews of games on Steam that express excitement at which games run well on Windows So in short in terms of older software and games how much of a headache would I get from Windows instead of New Computer - Win7 or Win10? Windows The software I can run on old laptops but if I build a new rig which would be used perhaps for gaming I don t want to suddenly cut down the library of games I can run by half by picking Windows instead of Windows Cheers nbsp

A:New Computer - Win7 or Win10?

I haven't heard that it won't actually allow Windows 7 to run. It's just that they're not going to continue pushing microcode updates and supporting new processor features on older versions of Windows. They also won't provide tech support if you can't get it to work, etc. People have blown Microsoft's statement on the matter out of proportion... I mean, it's not like they're still updating MS-DOS or older versions of Windows, but they still work on new computers (albeit in a limited way due to lack of available drivers). There's a possibility that you wouldn't be able to use some newer motherboard features, but that's about it.

That said, I would actually go with Windows 10 for gaming because it's going to support DirectX12, and you're probably going to start seeing games take advantage of it by December. It won't be backported to older versions of Windows. That's really your biggest limitation right there.

I've been able to get every game that worked on Windows 7 to work on Windows 10 with enough tweaking and playing with compatibility settings. There are a few that won't run on anything past XP, but that's generally because they don't play nice with the WOW64 subsystem (and even these usually work on 32-bit versions of 7 and 10). I mean, maybe I've been really lucky, but I haven't encountered a lot of games that just won't work at all on Windows 10 that did work on Windows 7. For instance, I have Morrowind working on my Surface Book with Windows 10... and that's a pretty old game. I had trouble getting MGXE to work, but I just had to install DirectX 9, set a compatibility mode, and restart. Now it runs in perfect 3:2 resolution at 1200x800.

The main reason to keep Windows 7 is because of Windows Media Center and Windows Movie Maker. They've cut out a lot of multimedia stuff without offering a good replacement, so if you need any of those features, they're good reasons to stick with Windows 7.

I think if you're really concerned, you could probably find a way to dual-boot until you're satisfied that Windows 10 can do everything you need. Or just keep your Windows 7 machine around for a while.

I have updated all the drivers for Lenovo Z51-70 with all the updated drivers they had hosted for Windows 10 recently.

A:Wifi adapter driver doesn't support in AP mode after upgrading to Win10

In the current adapters properties under Sharing tab, make sure the top box is checked under ICS.

After, insure the following commands from elevated command prompt have been completed:

netsh wlan set hostednetwork mode=allow ssid=whateverulike key=whateverulike

netsh wlan start hostednetwork

netsh wlan show hostednetwork

The last command should show if it worked or not.

Dear Friends,

I am desperately trying to upgrade to Windows10 from my windows7 machine.
After the upgrade, when the system tries to restart, I am getting below BSOD.
I tried most of the solutions available online but to no avail.
eg. ran chkdsk to check for hardrive issues - no issue found
ran windows diagnostic tool to check memory errors - no issues found
ran antivirus scan - no viruses or malware found. Removed anti virus, updated bios, updated drivers, even did a factory reset but same issue still persists. I don't have any hardware peripherals newly added to the PC.
I am also attaching analysis of the dump file.

Please help,

Hi gauravdj,

Welcome to the 7forums

Please read BSOD Posting Instructions
The second parameter indicates improper termination or defective cabling on SCSI devices or that two devices are trying to use the same IRQ. Please check your cabling for any problems, preferrable is replacement of the cabling for the time of troubleshooting to see if that may help.
I'll need the logs from the BSOD Posting Instructions for indepth analysis.

Please follow below suggestion, even when you already have done it, and upload the results (screenshots and/or logs.

Hello All

I'm currently running Win7 Pro 64-Bit and was wondering if it's possible to download Win10 Pro to install on a Bootable Stick Drive, and then do a clean install on my current system later?

I'm currently very happy with Win7 and have no intention of "upgrading" to Win10 for at least another year; besides, I've only just rebuilt after installing a new SSD!

If it's not possible to "save" the upgrade for a later date, and I have to purchase an OEM disc at some point in the future, then so be it.

A:Download Win10 Pro now, install (much) later?

You have to actually upgrade to Windows 10 before July 29th to get it for free. If you aren't going to use it for a year there isn't much sense in downloading it now considering that a newer version, the Anniversary update is scheduled to be released on August 2.

But, it doesn't make much sense to me either to not take advantage of the free upgrade offer and upgrade to Windows 10 before July 29th, even if just temporarily, to have your digital entitlement/license saved on Microsoft activation servers for future use. A couple of hours of making an image of Windows 7, upgrading to Windows 10, then restoring the Windows 7 image will save $200. That $100/hr for your time. And heck - use Windows 10 for a couple of days and you might not even go back to Windows 7.

I have a friend with WIN7 64 bit just like me. He received a message about upgrading to WIN10. He clicked on the X at the top right. It downloaded the update but he did not install it. It keeps asking about installing the upgrade.
What can he do to remove the WIN10 upgrade download?

What can we do to permanently remove any request to upgrade. Neither of us are computer gurus. We need a step by step simple procedure to stop any updates or requests for WIN10.

We have no desire for WIN10. Thanks, Bob.

The simplest way is to use a tool that automates the change of settings required to prevent the forced downgrade to Windows 10. Download the Never10 utility and it will disable the Win10 download. Extensive documentation and explanations are on its site.

I have Win7 Ultimate K and Win7 Ultimate KN which I intend to do a clean install of Win10 (within the next 2 days !!)
Does anyone know how Win7 K and KN keys translate to a Window 10 licence ? Can the Win7 K and KN keys be used for the "regular" Win10 - or can they only be used for the "N" version of Win10 ???

I don't mind installing Win10 "N" because you can always download and install the Media Pack that restores media player etc. But I would much rather just install the regular version of Win10 ??

A:How do Win7 K and KN keys translate to Win10

You can only use your product key/license from Windows 7 to upgrade to the same edition of Windows 10. Single Language has to upgrade to Single Language. N has to upgrade to N. KN has to upgrade to KN. Sorry, but you can't cross those barriers.

Hi and Welcome to TSF!

Did you ever successfully restore the machine to Windows 7?

If you selected to clean the drive, did you do this through Windows 10? This would have left the Windows 10 OS files on the drive, granted that it completed successfully.

Have you tried to create a bootable Windows 10 USB and boot to it?

Can you not connect to the Alienware BIOS at all? Do you see a splash screen of the logo?

After completion, i noticed that office2013 and foxitpdf applications did not launch after clicking on their shortcut or their exe in the respective folders. Neither did associated files open, ie clicking on an excel workbook file, failed to launch the application. Other applications, like an image viewer for example kept working fine.

i reinstalled office and foxitpdf, but same situation. i tried to run the applications as administrator and they launch fine. However, an excel workbook or a word document for example will not open directly, but i need to open them from within the application, which i have to run as admin.

Did the computer come with Windows 7? If so, then you can Activate by Phone, and Microsoft will be able to help you.
As for avoiding the 10 Upgrade, go to Windows Update, and right click the Win 10 Update and Hide it.
You should have a current backup of at least your Personal files, (eg) URL's, Pictures, Music, Documents etc on a USB HDD in case of disaster.
Or once everything is up and smooth you can make an Image file of your C: drive and save it to a USB HDD with Macrium Reflect. If disaster strikes, you boot off of a Macrium Boot CD and choose to Restore Image, browse to your Clone Image file on the external and it will set your computer back to the day it was Imaged

A:Can I upgrade h8-1230 from Win7 to Win10?

Greetings, Win 7 upgrades to Win 10 can be problematic with no easy way back to Win 7 unless you have a good image and bootable rescue media. The safest way to upgrade is to clone your existing Win 7 install to a second HDD or SSD. Connect only the cloned HDD to your PC to do the upgrade. Carefully read this entire article by Ed Bott to learn what needs to be done, and the time invested, if you have to rebuild Windows 7.  Win 10 may have the correct WLAN driver as well as all other drivers needed to run correctly or the upgrade could choke. You still have the original Win 7 install on the first HDD and can move on with your computing life. Cheers!

A:Dual boot Win10 with Win7 or Win 8.1 you already have on your PC

No Offense but you do understand Microsoft is giving a FREE Windows 10 by upgrading, right ? How they like to allow it is all up to them . No one said you can't buy windows 10 and do as you said . But, if you want a free windows 10 ? You can by upgrading from a prior windows 7, 8 and 8.1 OS don't you think you should at least abide to their agreement ? Also, since you used your windows 7 copy twice, once to upgrade to 10 not update but upgrade to 10 legally you can't use the 7 disk and install it again on a different or even on the same hard drive, which is what you just did by installing it on a partition drive .

A:Why does Win10 not allow overwrite by new Win7 disc?

I think the BIOS is blocking it. The reason is probably a possible lack of drivers for Win7.
