CPU Core speed locked around 800 MHz?

Q: CPU Core speed locked around 800 MHz?

https://snag.gy/DQ6zRN.jpg

Hello! I recently reset my computer because I noticed it was getting slow, and even after a clean install and after updating all of the drivers it was still slow, and I decided to look around and see if I could identify the problem. I think I did. My currently installed processor is an AMD Phenom II X4 965 Processor, which SHOULD run at around 3400 MHz, but as you can see it is locked at around 800? I've looked everywhere and I can't find an issue. I'm running on a desktop PC my cousin built, so I'm not super tech savvy when it comes to hardware. Help?

Preferred Solution: CPU Core speed locked around 800 MHz?

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/directdownload.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hello friends,
I m very eager to know that whats the actual difference between a Core 2 Duo processor and a Pentium Dual Core processor, other than their proceesing architecture?

According to most benchmarking sites including Tom's Hardware, Core 2 Duo E4300 or 6300 performs better than Pentium Dual Core 820 in almost all benchmarks.....whereas C2D E4300 or E6300(1.8 and 1.86 Ghz respectievely) are having MUCH lower clock speeds than Pentium D 820(2.8Ghz). Why like this???

I have 2 systems, one with C2D E4300 1.86 Ghz and another(from which I am writing this thread) is Pentium D 820 2.8Ghz. But I dont see any MUCH performance difference in reality, although in multi-tasking and gaming C2D system still performs better.

Can anybody please explain me in details.....
Thanks in advance.
Regards,
TheHacker

A:Why Core 2 Duo outperforms Pentium Dual Core even when C2D has lower clock Speed??

The Core 2 Duo doesn't share the same architecture as the older NetBurst architecture of the Pentium D, which is also shared by the Pentium 4. The Pentium D is effectively a pair of Pentium 4 CPUs on one die. The Core 2 Duo architecture allows for a lot more processing to be done in one cycle, hence more information can be pushed in, say, 1 million cycles by the Core 2 Duo than the Pentium D. As for 'reality', there obviously won't be much difference when both systems are used for stuff like playing music etc. But the real differences will show up when you tax them, such as when playing an HD video without a video card supporting HD-decoding where the Core 2 Duo will be able to process information much more quicker than the Pentium D and so you will have a smoother image. Check on Wikipedia for more in-depth details.

Obviously higher is better, which is more important? Would a card with less memory (64MB) and higher speeds run better than a card with more memory (128 or 256MB) and lower speeds? If speeds are = then a card with more memor would work better, correct?

So I purchased a new CPU a couple months ago and didn t bother to mess with the Bios after installing it Anyway the CPU I purchased was an AMD Phenom II X BE which as I understand is supposed to have all four cores unlocked from start with no need to do anything yourself Anyway some time had passed and about a month ago I was in my Bios messing around with some settings and noticed that under CPU Settings it showed something like this Core - Unlocked Core - Unlocked Core - Unlocked Core - Locked I started up my computer without making changes to check what my computer said and sure enough in task manager it only showed three cores I m almost positive that I d remembered seeing four cores in the task manage on multiple occasions before but of course couldn t be sure So I m not sure if it was always like this from when I installed the CPU or if something changed it for the first month or two I had it installed Anyway went back into Bios and changed it to Unlocked and now all four cores show as unlocked and my computer seems to be running fine but now I am unable to see the temperature readouts for each of my cores--which I understand is a side effect from unlocking cores though I shouldn t be having that problem considering the BE is supposed to come with all four cores unlocked AFAIK I m not too concerned about the temperature thing really but I m just wondering if this would have any effect on my computer or if it could mean that the CPU is faulty or something along those lines I appreciate mean CPU 965 locked core, had BE AMD a faulty? this Phenom X4 is could my II any help thanks nbsp

A:AMD Phenom II X4 965 BE had a locked core, could this mean my CPU is faulty?

I think the the X4 BE is supposed to have 6 cores, with 2 of them locked out. It almost sounds like you have an X3, with 1 of 4 cores locked out. My 970 BE showed 6 cores, with 2 locked out, when I first got it. But I think I may have over-cooked it, or something, when I enabled all 6 cores, and overclocked it, because now it only shows 4 cores. None are locked, though. It runs fine at 4GHz, with 1.5V to it, and 17V to the cooling fan.

A:CPU Speed Locked

Could it be the CPU throttling due to excess heat? Shouldn't happen with a clean install but a clogged fan , high ambient temperatures, or other hardware cooling issues could cause the overheating.

these are the temps before putting heavy load on the gpu

then these are the results after

I noticed that the fans are always at 35% and it does not rev up even when the GPU is loaded

Am I frying my hardware? I never changed any fan setting or something (the laptop does not have settings/software for it)

A:Fan speed locked at 35%

Fan controllers go by temperature, not load, if your temps are good, fans should not increase rpm.

A:Core Speed and Multipler Question

With Turbo boost, when the rest of the cores are idle, one of the cores can be boosted above normal multiplier. A multiplier of 16 indicates cores 1-3 are idle (idle with speedstep will lower your multiplier to a minimum of 16) while 4 is boosted to 3.7 GHz. This gives single threaded applications faster CPU cycles.

I just purchased a computer from viciouspc.com and I got a 9700 pro board with it. I know it is a pro becuase I took it out and it said "sapphire 9700 pro" on it. However, the core/mem speeds come stock at 297/290 which is not right, pro 9700s should be 325/310. I know it's not a 9700 np becuase np's are 270/275. when I overclock it to what the speed should be (325/310), I get minor artifacts. This should not happen with a 9700 pro at stock speeds. I was hoping to get it to like 350/325 or something to that effect. What could be wrong with the card?

Hi I am considering upgrading from my current single-core P to dual or quad core with new mobo and memory but keeping same NVidia GeForce GTX video for now My question is whether I should also upgrade Windows currently running Win Ultimate bit to bit and would I also need to upgrade my any it core, speed Dual/Quad up app? will apps to bit to take advantage of Dual/Quad core, will it speed up any app? the dual cores I have one game that specifically states it will run better on multi-core processor but what about apps that don t specify cores I have a very old app that processes sound files Cool Edit with all of the plug-ins Some of the ops take a long time to complete and I m wondering whether this will take less time if I run mutli cores on Windows bit Another app I have that can take a while to process data is Adobe Photoshop This is a very old version so it won t be multi-core aware either If it turns out that upgrading will only get me better performance in the one game then it may not be worth the expanse Thanks for your advice FW nbsp

A:Dual/Quad core, will it speed up any app?

I don't think that you will notice any performance gains from your applications unless they are specifically coded for 64 Bit. Anyhow, it's a good idea to switch to 64 Bit Windows especially if you have 4GB RAM or greater.

All 32 Bit programs should run fine in any 64 Bit environment.

As for advantages of upgrading the CPU, there are many. A dual / quad will easily outperform your current CPU by MILES! The P4 chockes on most recent games (notably Crysis). It might also bottleneck the 9800GTX.

What will you be essentially using the PC for? Gaming / encoding / ?

A:CORE @ DUO SPEED DOWN 2.93ghz to 1.46ghz

As a power saving measure, the CPU speed will automatically be throttled to a lower frequency when speed isn't required.
Keep the Task Manager window open, then open up another application (or find another away of getting the PC to do some extra work). You should see the processor freq go up to its rated 2.93GHz.

Welcome to TechSpot

As so many others, you have "fallen" for the speed of an AMD Athlon XP.
Their values such as "2400+" mean: comparable to an Intel processor running at 2400MHz. The actual speed of the AMD CPU is lower, in your case 1800MHz.
Technically you have an AMD1800. But as it performs equal to an Intel2400, it is marketed with its "comparable to an Intel2400" moniker.

Hi,

I have a Compaq Duo Core notebook, with 1GB ram and 100 GB HD. Running Win XP SP2. I have a lot of programs on the system and over the last week or so, I've noticed that the computer is very slow.

I use a program called Cleanse Uninstaller which has a junk file finder. I've used it to "analyse" what could be taken off and it presented me with a list of over 200 files. But which ones can I actually remove?? Furthermore, will this actually have a beneficial effect on the speed?

Also, I have Norton ghost 12.0. and an external drive of 120 Gb. I've been doing incremental backups of "my computer" and certain essential files. Everything appears to be working okay.

So, in a nutshell, how can I speed up the computer without risking programs and files?

Thanks,

Trying to figure out if I can fix this laptop cheap or not. I think the issue stems from overheating in the past. I know it isn't software as I just formatted and installed a fresh Win10 copy. After using the computer for a bit the CPU core speed reported by CPU-Z goes from around 2.6Ghz to around 500Mhz. Oddly though the CPU core temperature isn't that hot and like 110 Fahrenheit.

Anyone know if it's the CPU temperature sensor that triggers lowering clock speed or the motherboards? Open Hardware Monitor didn't detect a sensor for my motherboard, but maybe it has one not known by the software. Sometimes when this lower clock speed happens the laptop bottom feels hot, other times it feels normal. Not sure what to do. Maybe I should buy a new fan and just give it a try? Any advice?

When I have had a CPU overheat, they just stop. I don't think they slow down. Normally PC temperatures are expressed in Centigrade, not Fahrenheit. Without any calculation, I believe that is 33 C or something like that. That is not hot at all. How did you get that reading? Are you sure it is not 100 C? You might want to check that again. https://www.piriform.com/speccy/download This is a good free program. Give it a try and let us know. == I checked an ad for the Dell E6400. It says this ==

Hi First of all I'll tell you what I'm running Dell Inspiron laptop Windows Ultimate x Intel T GHz GB DDR GB Samsung Internal HDD My old hard drive died recently so this morning I switched it for a brand new replacement Upon reinstalling Windows it was clear that the computer was running dreadfully slowly so I downloaded CPU-Z to see what the CPU was doing CPU-Z says that the processor is running with an apparently unchanging multiplier of normally between and depending on what SpeedStep is doing with a bus speed of MHz reporting a core speed of MHz Additionally it's reporting a Core VID of V the Intel website says that the range for this processor at at 2.0 398 Core Intel Speed multiplier T7250 MHz 2.0x, GHz stuck is V- V When I boot into the BIOS it reports the CPU to be running at GHz and using ThrottleStop allows me to bring it back into normal range once Windows is loaded The computer doesn't seem to boot any slower than before but once it gets Intel T7250 2.0 GHz multiplier stuck at 2.0x, Core Speed at 398 MHz to the logon screen it slows down which leads me to believe that it's somewhere there that is going wrong perhaps I've set ThrottleStop to load at startup but isn't a foolproof solution and really I'd much rather have Windows manage the CPU than have to do it manually A second reinstall of Windows has not solved the problem If anybody has come across something like this before or has any ideas for how to begin trying to sort it out then I will be very very grateful Thanks

A:Intel T7250 2.0 GHz multiplier stuck at 2.0x, Core Speed at 398 MHz

Hi again,

I've tried a couple more things.

Updating the BIOS (to the same version, so reflashing, I guess) increases the multiplier, according to CPU-Z, to 4x, but it doesn't go any higher than that.

I've tried uninstalling and re-installing the CPU drivers through Device Manager. When the computer restarts it runs to the full 10x multiplier (occasionally running up to 11x, which seems to be a kind of overrun that it's always done). This lasts for a minute or two then it drops back to 4x and refuses to go higher again.

All the while CPU-Z is reporting a VID of 0.85v despite the Intel website, and everything I can find online, saying that the minimum voltage for the CPU is 1.075v.

Using ThrottleStop is having the side-effect of overheating the laptop (because it seems to run at the high multiplier for a lot longer than it usually would) causing it to shutdown automatically at a certain point.

When I boot up the BIOS is still reporting the CPU to be running at the full 2GHz, which is the normal 10x multiplier, and it drops when Windows takes over.

Completely running out of ideas. I've never had a problem like this before with any version of Windows, and the computer was working absolutely fine yesterday.

I guess my next step is trying it with a copy of XP or something, to see if I can try and rule out the OS as a problem, unless anybody has any ideas at all for what to try before doing that?

Thanks again, any help at all is very much appreciated!

I was thinking about overclocking my CPU to at least 3.0ghz, but I'm totally new to overclocking CPUs and I would like to know how to overclock my CPU. Also, I'd like to know if 3.0ghz is a very safe overclocking speed; a higher overclock that will have no problematic effect on my CPU would be nice as well. Help appreciated, thanks.

What is the safest, most stable and highest clock speed this CPU can go up to? I just figured out how to overclock it, and I understand that it can be dangerous and must be done only by a few notches at a time. Before I had it clocked at 2.11 GHz (Original) but now I have it clocked at 2.12 GHz. What is the maximum clock speed it can go up to?

A:What is the maximum clock speed an AMD Athlon X2 Dual Core 4000+ can go up to?

I have taken one of those up to 2.4Ghz, but I didn't go any higher. Before you overclock, also make sure your heatsink will be able to handle cooling it.

And remember that all CPU's are different, just because somebody can get theirs up to 5Ghz doesn't mean someone else with the same CPU can.

A:AMD A4-5000 "Quad Core" vs Intel Core i3-4005U Dual Core

Hmm, I guess you should read some reviews. But just from the specs the AMD has 6 GB ram instead of 4. Has a DVD burner where the Intel shows no optical drive. It only has W8 8.0 where the Intel has 8.1. But some people may prefer 8.0.

Read reviews. See how each performs. If you don't wish to use it to burn DVD then the optical drive, or lack thereof may not matter to you.

Edit: Oh, and the AMD is about $80 cheaper.

If you would like it to be high all the time and get better performance you can goStart Menu>Control Panel>Power Options>Then tap on High Performance and beside that press "Change Plan Settings">Then press "Change advanced power settings">Now go down to the prosessor power management section and expand it>Then goto "Minimum Prosessor State" and put it to 100% If this has helped please let me know!

Hi, Currently I'm using a dual core 6850 and I'm thinking about buying a quad core. I have a PSU of 500 W as spare.

Can i replace the CPU to a Quad Core without changing the cooling system?

A:replace dual core CPU by quad core what about heatsink? in Mini Tower 755 Optiplex

heinflhs
These are the specs of the spare PSU. Aren't they better than the original Dell PSU?
That power supply is ATX and not EPS12V
Better is not the issue.  Dell power supplys are 80 percent efficient not 70 percent ATX.  The -5v rail is an issue as well as this may cause a motherboard fire or damage your system.  Its a dead giveaway that this is a power supply from 1990 to 2000.
What current is on which rails is not trivial. There is a single 12V RAIL on that unit and its max is 17A
EPS 12V units have multiple rails of 12V @ 18 amps each.  MAX Power on the 12V rails is 264w not 204w
That unit has a lot more on the 5V and 3.3V rails at the expense of the 12V rails and CPU 4 pin connector. So no that spare unit is not likely to work well if at all.

Recommended update or replacement is EVGA 750B1

Hi,

I'm buying a new computer with Vista home premium (32 bit), and I can't decide whether I should get a 2.4 quad core or a faster dual core (since it's cheaper).

I've searched about this but all the results I've got were from 2007, so I'm not sure if things changed much now.

So what do you think? will I benefit from the additional cores? or shall I go with faster dual cores?
appreciate your help

Hey all,
I have some proprietary software that works great on a single-core processor. When I try to run it on a dual-core or above, the software loads, works once, and then messes up.

The software uses modems to dial out to our payphones. We found a work-around by turning off one processor in the bios, but then, what's the point of having a dual-core processor.

Please help. The software is doing this on Windows XP.

Out of those 3, the E6300 is the best. Conroe's new architecture is so efficient, that easily outperforms Netburst based CPU´s (P4, PD, Celeron D), and even manages to outperform AMD CPU's.

You can see by yourself HERE. All Conroe CPU's perform excellent. And you can overclock them very easily, and that way, your 1.8GHZ Conroe overclocked to 2000-2400 MHZ will completely trash the other CPU's.

Is there a Bios update that will address the issue ?, it may be worth checking the MB manufacturers site.
Hope this helps, good luck and post your results.

I was just interested in knowing if my intel celeron D 335 2.80GHz processor is dual core or single core because on intel's website, I see that they make a dual and single core version but I can't determine which one mine is?

Thanks.

It's a single core.

There are dual core Celerons, but yours isn't.

Hi,
I have two laptops made by the same manufacturer and same year, but one is a dual core laptop with an SSD harddrive and the other is a quad core laptop with a regular hard drive. Both laptops run Windows 8.

I would like to transfer my programs and files from the dual core to the quad core. However, obviously the quad core has different hardware.

I am wondering if I simply remove the SSD from the dual core and put it into the quad core (replacing the quad's primary hard drive with the SSD) and simply boot up the quad core, would that be sufficient? Will the quad core recognize the hardware mismatch and automatically correct the drivers, while keeping my programs and files?

Or is there some other, efficient way to make the transfer? I really want to avoid having to reinstall all my programs.

Thank you

A:Transfer programs and files from Dual Core to Quad Core

There are a lot of third party tools designed to move a Windows installation to new hardware. I prefer using native Windows tool Sysprep for this, mainly because the method is the one and only Microsoft supports and recommends but also because it has never failed me.

The method is described in this tutorial on our sister site the Seven Forums and works also with Windows 8: Windows 7 Installation - Transfer to a New Computer - Windows 7 Help Forums. Method One in tutorial would be ideal for you for moving the SSD to new computer.

Read the information and warnings in the beginning of the tutorial carefully, especially the warning about Windows needing to be reactivated is important. Come back if you have any questions.

I am looking to build my own PC as I can't afford Ł1,000+ to get someone to make one for me, I will be using it for gaming and communication and a little college work, I will probably be using Bullguard to protect it and OpenOffice instead of Microsoft Office with a Win 7 64bit OS.

Bearing this in mind what would be the best Processor for the Intel Core i5 3.4 GHz Quad-Core (BX80637I53570K) Processor and what would be the maximum Memory and Storage I could attach to it? ( I preferably want 8GB of Memory and 1tb of storage ) but I can be flexible.

A:What would be the best motherboard for a Intel Core i5 3.4 GHz Quad-Core (BX80637I53570K) Processor?

The CPU you want is the i5 3570K. That runs on the socket LGA 1155. When you are on a budget, any mid range mobo will suit your needs. Use the savings from the mobo towards a better HDD or even an SSD. You will also need a GPU.

I would recommend the ASUS P8Z77-V LK motherboard. As for RAM, 8GB is enough. As for the HDD, 1TB is great. I recommend the WD Caviar Black 1TB HDD.

Make sure you can get in a GPU.

Hi,

about 2 years ago I have upgraded my computer with a new motherboard, rams and a processor and since we moved in between I cannot find the boxes or bills from that time.

The problem:
I am 90 percent sure, that at the time I wanted a quad core processor and my computer properties say that I have Intel Core i5-3450.
I googled around and all retailers as well as Intel list this processor as quad, but I whenever I use aplications where cores are displayed (i.e. playclaw or some kind of benchmarking), it only ever shows core 0 and core 1.
When I go to task manager > processes > and go to select affinity on a random process, once again only 2 cores are aviable to choose from.

Any ideas what might be causing this? Because if I am not mistaken I have had my computer on a leash for 2 years...

One has:
2.20 GHz AMD V Series V120 single-core processor with 512 KB L2 cache and 1066 MHz front-side bus
250 GB SATA hard drive (5400 RPM)
3 GB of installed DDR3 RAM (1066 MHz; expandable to 8 GB)
ATI Radeon HD 4250 graphics (with 256 MB of discrete video memory) It provides up to 1919 MB of total shared system memory

The other has:
AMD Athlon II X2 dual-core P320 processor
2.10GHz, 1066MHz Front Side Bus, 1MB L2 Cache
2GB DDR3 system memory
250GB SATA hard drive
ATI Radeon HD 4250 graphics with 256MB of dedicated system memory

Which would be better for simple computing, surfing, and streaming videos?

Hi
which model pentium 4 has socket LGA775 was implemented.
I mean which model brand hp or compaq or HCL or ibm ? year & model required.
I prefer to buy that model so that i can upgrade to latest processors.

Another question:
Will Pentium 4 with Socket LGA 775 supports any chipset model for upgradation to
1.Core 2 Duo
or
2.Dual core processors ?
If not pls give me the Chipset models support for the upgradation.

My plan is buy used pentium 4 LGA 775 & upgrade to new processor(only processor using same motherboard of the old one) which eliminates/reduces cost for upgradation.

Is this right plan or is there any complication in upgradation.

A:Pentium 4 lga775 upgrade to Dual core or Core 2 Duo

pathardware first please read this: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/LGA_775

The list of processors using LGA 775 are listed on that page. As for your question, YES some P4 motherboards might support Dual Core and Core 2 Duo.

My Current motherboard is an ASUS P5B-MX/WiFi AP and I'm running a P4 Prescott on it. The CPU support list on the ASUS website lists Dual Core, Core 2 Duo and Quad Core support (With BIOS upgrade). My P4 actually was part of a Compaq system purchased way back in 2005. After that the rest of the system (barring monitor and processor) has had major overhauls.

But, as for your plan, I would suggest you go about building an entry level new system by yourself.

There are 2 laptops.
One has a 3.0GHz single core.
The other has a 1.5GHz dual core.
The thing I'm asking is: When you buy a laptop that says it's 2.66 GHz triple core, does that mean there are 3 processors each clocked at 2.66 GHz? Or does it mean that there are 3 processors and in total they add up to 2.66 GHz?
Also, is it better to have a 3.0 GHz single core or a 1.5 GHz dual core if you want to run games?

Actually I have never used hyper V ..... I use VMWare for my visualization needs . There is a settings menu by which I am able to fit the number of processors and number of cores per processor for the guest os . I guess hyper V also have such a setting .

Moreover, in VMWare, you are to install VMWare Tools to make the vm run flawlessly, and it makes mouse integration and network etc drivers workable in the guest . Is there such an option in Hyper V ? If so , do it .

Secondly, in device manager, there is only 1 core with no option to select 2 or box for detect HAL.

Lastly BIOS doesn't detect more then 1.

I have processor box unchecked and have uninstalled my CPU from device manager in hopes a restard would re-detect it. I have also updated my mobo & vid card drivers from the site and updated my bios to the latest.

I currently own a single core AMD Athlon 64 processor (3200+), and a friend told me that if i upgrade to dual-core, I'd be able to multi-task on the computer.

But on the other hand, the articles I've found on the internet so far say that most applications these days don't take advantage of the power of dual-core processors.
Would I really notice a significant difference in performance if I upgraded to an AMD dual core 4200+ processor? (the price difference is like $140 US)

Also, my mother board is socket 939, shall I change it too? or simply use a socket 939 compatible dual processor?
Your help is much appreciated

Hello yesterday i've made a system restore and some apps like Coretemp, CPU-Z and HWMonitor gives me as result Core #0 but in task manager on performance tab it display the four cores working. I read in some other threads about the advanced option in msconfig i've already checked\unchecked the number of processors but nothing happened. Please give me some hope before i need to reinstall windows again, there is so much to config and install CHRISTMAS IS COMING!!!

A:Quad Core detected as single core

Try to uninstall then reinstall those programs and see what happens

I started buying the parts yesterday with the case and motherboard I picked up an Antec Nine Hundred case and an ASUS P KC motherboard This board will support either the core duo or core quad chip and has slots for ddr dimms and ddr So here s what I m thinking for the rest Antec TP - PSU W Western Digital GB HDD EVGA MB Video PCI-E Question Should I go with the Core Duo at GHz or the Core Quad at In either case I can get either GB DDR at MHz or GB DDR at MHz for roughly the same price With the DDR the memory would be maxed out - System Quad? Core or Build Core Duo 2 2 New because there New System Build - Core 2 Duo or Core 2 Quad? are only two DDR slots and I can t find GB DDR dimms that I can afford Edit I picked out a Zalman New System Build - Core 2 Duo or Core 2 Quad? cooler because I have one in my current PC and when I installed it it cut the idle temp on the CPU by degrees but the case has a side vent and room for a mm fan Should I get the cooler or stick with the stock HSF and install the side fan This case is loaded with fans already - two mm in front pushing through the drive bays mm exhaust fan at the top rear of the case and a mm on top I think the W PSU will handle that and more nbsp

Because there are two cores on...for instance, my AMD Athlon X2, does that mean that since there are two cores, the normal FSB for one core which would be 2000mhz, would be x2 so i can put in 4 sticks of pc 6400 at 800mhz? or does the FSB not change when you add another core? Also is there somewhere i can learn more about how the cores work together? Im pretty new to the whole concept. Thanks!

A:Dual Core Front Side Bus x2?? or the same as 1 core?

You can only put in RAM that your motherboard supports, and only as much as it supports.

This should get you started in Front Side Bus architecture, and you can like off to other Wiki entries from there.

Also, poking around on www.tomshardware.com will help you pick up a ton of good information, although most it is written assuming you know what all of that means. You should be able to infer lots of new info from their articles and reviews, though.

i have a Intel E5400 Overclocked to 3.23GHz and was going to upgrade to a Q9400 quad and was wondering as i mainly use my PC for high end gaming is quad core as important as it is used more for multitasking and i was told dual would be better for gaming is this true?

A:What is better for PC gaming Dual Core or Quad Core?

It's a little confusing. I'd say in general, quad-core processors are more powerful than dual core; however, that doesn't necessarily mean faster.

Certain programs are written to take advantage of multi-core processors, like many games and power-hungry programs such as Photoshop.

However, not all are. Windows does its best to distribute the load evenly, but it's not the same.

Furthermore, many quad core processors are clocked at a lower rate than dual core. Your dual-core processor is clocked at 3.23GHz; the quad is clocked at 2.66.

Bottom line: if the programs you will be running can make use of all the cores, you will very likely see a performance increase. If they are not designed that way, there is a good chance your performance will actually decrease.

In your case, I suspect the programs you will be running can make use of the 4 cores well; many games do. But use your judgment!
