I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/directdownload.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

You need a SATA3 port to connect a SATA3 HDD to be fully compatible.

The service guide for the HP Laptop ENVY 17-j013cl indicates the largest SSD that is compatible is 160GB.  Does the service guide state this because, at the time the ENVY 17 was produced, the largest SSD was 160GB?   Or is the system limited to 160GB SSD, for some reason? Thanks.

I don't mean to highjack the thread but I have an additional question that may be helpful for others performing the same type of recovery.

I ordered the recovery CDs for my HP 2000 Notebook just today.

To increase performance, I am also thinking of replacing the factory-installed 320GB hard disk drive (HDD) with a 240GB solid state drive (SSD).

QUESTION: Does the OS recovery CDs/DVDs need the drive to be the exact same size - 320GB? Obviously, WIndows will fit just fine of a 240GB drive. Does the recovery process recreate the recovery partition as well as part of the restoration process?

Thank you for your time and any advice.

SSD are pretty inexpensive for 500G right now. You don't want to go smaller. It doesn't have to be the exact same size but it should always be bigger not smaller. Factory recovery will create AS IS from the factory setup and recovery partition if you should use the Factory Recovery media.

I'm interested in purchasing an HP ENVY 720-220 computer. The specs look great, but I'd love to upgrade the RAM. According to the product specifications, it is upgradable to 16 GB. Now, my question is, would HP be willing to upgrade the RAM themselves if I paid an additional fee? I know the guide to upgrade RAM is online, but I'd rather not take the risk and mess up the machine.  Thank you ahead of time.

A:upgrading Envy m6 1125dx with SSD, are there any limitations...

See p. 48 of the Manual here: M6 service Manual https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d7kLMZoGoTs There is no limit to the SSD you can install other than your budget. Any 2.5 inch SATA SSD that is 7mm thick which almost all are.  http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=9SIA6BM3T90744&cm_re=Samsung_850_Evo-_-20-147-373-_-... The Samsung Evo 850 is my choice but OCZ, Kingston, several others make a good product so as long as it is a name brand you can shop on price and there are deals to be had.  Software reinstallation/migration can be hard but if you have Windows 10 you always know you can download an install disk and you do not need a Key Code to reinstall and it will activate when you connect to the internet. Windows 10 allows you to make a system image and you can also use cloning software. Many ways to skin the cat. Post back with the inevitable follow-up questions.  If this is "the Answer" please click "Accept as Solution" to help others find it.

Hi, I had a problem with my old HDD installed on my HP ENVY 15-j012la, so I bought a new 240 gb SSD (Crucial BX200). I replaced the HDD with the SSD, then turn the laptop ON with the USB Win10 image to install it on the SSD, but the installer didn't recognized it. I gave format to the SSD, but the problem remains. I've read that the SATA should be changed in the BIOS, but this laptop has the InsydeH20 3.7 and there's no way to change to AHCI. I would be very grateful if you could help with this issue! Best !

Schwaa, welcome to the forum. This was a very good review of how you upgraded your computer.  What you discovered are the problems that are created by a mid-size case.  It would be great if HP would offer a full size case for their gaming computers.  What you accomplished should make a major difference in performance.

I wish to downgrade my laptop from windows 10 to windows 7.  I have a new windows 7 install disk & product key, and have replaced my original 1TB hard drive (do not want any semblance of Windows 10 anywhere near my computer).  But like others, the Windows Install  stalls  with demand for missing driver.  I need the SATA hard disk driver compatible with both Windows 7 and this computer, in a format that Windows 7 can "see" on a CD, DVD or USB, and then load.  Hard drive is formatted MBR.  Can anyone direct me to the SATA driver for my situation?   Thanks, in advance, for any help. PS - I have backups and "upgrade install" disks from my defunct HP Pavillion dv6700t which also used Windows 7, but don't think they'd be of use in my present situation.  ?

Hi: That is probably not the issue. Please read the below information for how to get W7 to install on a notebook with a 6th gen core processor. I suggest you make your set of recovery disks before proceeding to install W7 should the experiment fail, and you will also need to go into the BIOS, enable legacy mode, which should disable secure boot.  Windows 7 is not compatible with secure boot. Here are the basic instructions to get W7 to install on your model. The Microsoft Windows 7 installation media doesn't have the native USB 3.0 drivers. So you have to add the USB 3.0 drivers into the Windows installation flash drive. Intel came through on this one.  They have a utility that does all the work for you. Follow the instructions in the Readme link to make a bootable USB flash drive from your windows installation DVD. https://downloadcenter.intel.com/download/25476/Wi???ndows-7-USB-3-0-Creator-Utility Run this and point to your Windows USB Installation media, and Windows 7 should install.

I want to install a new PCle SSD into a Latitude E5570 but I need the bracket that goes over the card and secures it from popping out.

Does anybody know what the specs are for the bracket, the part no. perhaps or where I can get it?

Thanks!

A:PCle SSD Bracket for Latitude E5570

They won't fit at the same time.  The bracket for the 2.5 SSD doesn't fit when the M2 is in there, so don't bother trying. You have to decide which one you want and maybe use an external network drive, external storage or Dropbox, etc. for more storage.

I picked up a refurbished HP ENVY 750-137C, and am currently looking to upgrade the graphics. I don't want to break the bank, but I do want it to last me some time, so I'm looking at the Nvidia GEFORCE GTX 1070.  Aside from the changes in power requirements, does anyone know if this card would be compatible, and if there are any issues to this upgrade? Also, Nvidia recommends a 500W power supply for this card. Would that be enough, or is that genrous number? Additionally, if anyone has a power supply product they would recommend for this theoretical combination, I would greatly appreciate the advice. Thanks!

A:Upgrading to GTX 1070 Graphics Card for HP ENVY 750-137C

@Drifterx311?, welcome to the forum. Here are the full specs of the card on nVidia's website.  The card is double slot and 10.5" in length.  I suggest measuring from the Back I/O plate to the front of the case to see how much space is available.  I believe that it will fit, but it will be tight. As you stated, the specs recommend a 500W power supply unit (PSU).  Personally, I would buy one with at least 600W.  This will give you some extra power for peak needs.  I like Corsair products.  Here are some PSU's for you to review at Newegg.  If you choose a modular PSU it will allow you to only install the cables that are absolutely necessary.  This allows for better airflow.  The PSU is the backbone of the computer.  Read the Customer Reviews to see what users have to say about them.  A good PSU will make your system run much better. Please click the Thumbs up + button if I have helped you and click Accept as Solution if your problem is solved.

Any thoughts welcom, thanks in advance.

The O.S. is installed to SATA-II drive. Do you think there would be benefit under this situation to move the page file to a slower SATA-I drive since it a different physical drive?

Or would the page file perform better on the SATA-II drive, even with the O.S. on this same drive?

Opinions or anyone with experience testing this?

A secondary drive, on a second controller is optimal. Simultaneous read/writes are possible this way, plus the controllers are not q'ing activity.

Hi, hopefully should be straight forward enough...

I have just bought one of these space saving Acer Revos which does not come with an Optical drive.

I have a Blu-ray reader (dvd writer) which is SATA, but the Revo only has USB or eSATA.
So... i was wondering what is needed to get this (SATA) drive to work via eSATA or usb?

Is it as simple as a SATA to eSATA cable or will this not give the necessary power to the drive?

Or do i need an eSATA enclosure, and if so what size for an optical drive 5.2?

Cheers for any help.

A:Upgrading Laptop SATA HDD

You need a minimum of 2.5 GB of space.
Also, in our experience, the Ghosted recovery partition will not work when moved, as it is designed to detect the change in configuration. This is a Microsoft requirement. You should talk to Toshiba.
However, the Drive Letter is a different issue, again having to do with the Ghost version of a hidden partition.

I'm wanting to upgrade to a better mainboard. I don't know much about SATA, but I've been using a SATA I hard drive very successfully through a pci controller card.

My question: If I get a new motherboard with SATA II headers, will it readily accept my SATA I hard drive? I can see how the reverse might not work, that is, not being able to connect a SATA II hard drive in a SATA I header, but maybe I'm wrong on that...?

A:Will SATA II mobo headers accept SATA I drive?

Yes, sata 3gb/s ports(commonly called sata II), are designed to be backward compatible. I'm using a sata I hd on my sata 3gb/s port on my chaintech vnf4/ultra, so yeah, it works.

I have 2 IDE HDs installed and added SATA drive lately. SATA runs in IDE mode in CMOS. Problem is, even though SATA drive is recognized by BIOS, Disk Manager, Norton Ghost & System Works, it doesn't show in My Computer, causing problems with saving and opening files. Tried a couple of tricks (changing the drive letter, disconnecting & reconnecting the drive, reformatting etc. ) nothing seems to work. I use this SATA drive for storage and for now I have to drag the files down there manually.
I don't know if it's of any importance, but I have nVidia GeForce graphics card onboard.
Has anyone encountered this kind of a problem ?

As my system spec says I have a H61 motherboard, which only supports SATA II

When Ivy bridge comes out I plan on getting an i3 or i5 (whatever is suitable and has HD 4000) and a 60-100gb SSD for OS and applications (the 1TB will still be used for videos and stuff, and it is only SATA II)

I don't really do THAT much gaming, and I don't think I'll be doing anything that requires superduperfast read/write to the boot drive.

So: would SATA II be a bad bottleneck for my system?

thanks.

what is the best way of doing this? I work for a small company I can handle most of the task but am worried that I would crash this server.

what is the best practice to upgeade these drives?

Well you could start by loading the drivers during the install process by hitting F6 and inserting a floppy disk containing the drivers. You could also use nlite to precompile the drivers in to the install CD before beginning the installation. Google nlite and you'll see how easy it is.

Perhaps not a question for sevenforums but I'd figure you guys would either have the answer or be able to direct me to the answer I purchased a Silicon SiI SATA Raid Controller purely to have extra SATA ports which I am using to connect to my case's external drive bays I have flashed the bios of the controller and updated the driver to put it in quot Base quot mode so it is not using RAID I did extensive research on this and it appears that I have this part right Controller? SATA on SATA-II Drive Raid For now I am trying to connect a WD BEVT quot SATA-II hard drive to one of these ports and am having some difficulty I can see the drive but when I try to format the drive in Windows or a command prompt using the windows recovery DVD it hangs I am wondering if this is a compatibility issue with a SATA-II drive on a SATA-I controller however most of the forums I have read state that if there is a compatibility SATA-II Drive on SATA Raid Controller? issue the controller won't even recognize the drive I searched around to see if there was a way to force the HDD SATA-II Drive on SATA Raid Controller? to SATA but the jumpers on this drive are for SSC and RPS Is there a way to fix this or do I need a drive that is capable of forcing SATA-I speeds Perhaps even a controller capable of at least SATA-II since that is the minimum of all new HDDs

A:SATA-II Drive on SATA Raid Controller?

SATA II drives are typically not backwards compatible with SATA I ports, especially on add-in cards UNLESS they have what is called "autospeed negotiation". This determines the max speed of the drive and tells it to compensate if it's too high (use SATA 1 vs 2). Unless there is a jumper on your drive, which it doesn't sound like there is, then the add-in card does not have autospeed negotiation. This is taken from Problems encountered installing SATA 3.0 Gb/s hard drives on SATA 1.5 Gb/s controllers.

I suggest finding an addin card that supports SATA II like this card: Newegg.com - Rosewill RC-211 Silicon Image 2 port SATA II PCI Express Host Controller Card(RAID 0/1/JBOD)

I am one of those people who like to gradually transfer over from one technology to another when the price is right. Well the price is right especially since SATA has been out for several years and PATA is an obsolete technology.

I have a PATA drive which is formatted for NTFS, not fat 32. I want to install it on a SATA 2 drive. I want to back it up with Ghost or Acronis and install it on the new sata2 drive.

Will this work? The drives aren't the same size either. Does it matter if it is Acronis or Ghost?

Thanks

A:Can I use Ghost or Acronis to back up my PATA drive and install it on a SATA drive

If you have the drivers for the SATA controller installed on your Windows installation then there's rarely any issue cloning the PATA drive to a SATA drive, and there's no issue with cloning to larger drive either, both Acronis and Ghost support going to a smaller or bigger drive. The file system doesn't matter.

I'm playing with a recently retired server running 32bit Windows 7 Professional. Originally it was configured as RAID 0 with 5 SATA drives. A:Transferring files from a laptop SATA drive to a desktop IDE drive

If the desktop has SATA, then just plug the Laptop drive in, make sure the BIOS is set to boot from the IDE, and thats it.

If it doesn't, then the most painless way is an external USB Caddy - like this: http://shop.mcgtech.com.au/s.nl/it.A/id.2988/.f?sc=2&category=8641

SCAN IT FOR VIRUSES/SPYWARE BEFORE TRANSFERRING DATA!!!

A:SATA drive unaccessable-is called Dynamic Foreign drive

Unless you're going to have a multidisk volume HDD I don't think you will want
to partition your SATA into a Dynamic Disk. I have never heard of Dynamic and Foreign but things change everyday.

Other operating systems: If you convert a disk with a partition that contains an operating system other than Windows 2000 or Windows XP Professional, you will not be able to start the computer from that operating system after the conversion.

Reverting back to basic disks: After you convert a basic disk into a dynamic disk, you cannot change the dynamic volumes back to partitions. Instead, you must delete all dynamic volumes on the disk and then use the Convert To Basic Disk command. Hope this answer some of your question.

Can anybody talk me through installing a slave drive on my gateway gm5483e motherboard model 945gct-m3 made by elitegroup also known as ECS

A:windows Vista sata hard drive slave drive

plvness,

It should be as simple as installing a couple of cables. Hopefully you've got a nice flat cable either with the new slave drive, or a spare with the motherboard: it's normally red, but can be other colours, about 1cm wide and 1mm thick. That needs to be plugged in between the drive and one of your SATA slots on the motherboard. They'll normally be black, and unlike most, will have a slight 'L' shape to them. If you get a torch on your motherboard, you should see SATA1 or SATA2 written very close to them. If you've already got a SATA drive, then it should be easy to spot, so just use the second port.

When you start the machine up, go into the BIOS by pressing the appropriate key (it should come up with a screen just after displaying what graphics card you have / testing memory, telling you what key to press - normally F1, F2, F12, Esc or Del),

Then find your way to the 'Boot Order' section (sorry, not sure quite where it'll be for your chipset - but it'll be either on the first screen, or more likely a menu off of it), and make sure that it's still on your CD/Floppy/original drive first and hasn't swapped to your new SATA (it shouldn't have done, but some prefer a SATA drive by default to an IDE).

Any probs or questions, please come back. You'll do fine!

Rich.

I was just copying files right from my c drive which contains defunct windows to the bootable drive. with drive make main SATA Trying XP installed folders that the pc doesnt use I had no clue what i was attempting to do years ago with this install onto my e drive which is the primary drive i am going to reformat the c drive to install windows Now what happened is that i went to disconnect the one drive to make certain the windows folders on c are not in use im sure theyre not since they havent Trying to make SATA drive with XP installed the main bootable drive. been modified Trying to make SATA drive with XP installed the main bootable drive. in years but ran into an error on bootup where the system couldnt find the file ntldr I had to burn this fix from my laptop onto a dvd and then run that and it fixed it What happened was that in the root c drive folder was the ntldr file and a few others apparently that i moved into a folder on my e drive in my attempts to preserve everything from the c drive for after i format it I moved all those little files back to the root c drive I checked in the root e folder and those files arent there I was expecting there to be copies of them at least I then copied those files from the c root dir to the E root dir I then unplugged c and booted and i get the quot error loading os quot or quot os not found quot i forget the exact error message This may have something to do with e being a SATA drive and c being an IDE drive however Anyway for whatever reason the pc will not recognize the e drive on the SATA as bootable I read that if I boot from the xp cd and choose repair on the e drive it may fix the issue Wondering what you all think of that All i want to do is be able to boot from e for now until I make the c drive the win install bootable main drive If anyone could explain the easiest path to take to accomplish that at this point that would be swell

A week ago, a strange clicking noise befalled us whenever we attempted to boot the system. The BIOS welcome screen would run for much longer than usual, and then a message "No internal hard drive found." would display. We thought it would be a hard drive error and replaced it.

Now, however, placing in a bootable OS installation CD does not work! Whenever we try, the computer acts like there is no CD (although sometimes the CD does begin to spin), and says there is no boot device available.

I have tried a Ubuntu CD, a Windows Vista CD, a Windows XP CD, and none of them work. It does not matter what CD you put in; it does not work.

So what is the problem? Is it fixable? Was it the hard drive that broke?

The system is a Dell Inspiron 5150 laptop.

I wonder is there a simple way of doing this, I am using Windows XP home edition, the PC is an oldish one and isn't any specific make, so I can't get any clever programs from the manufacturers site, any idea?

I am running Windows 7 Pro. Have a external dual dock connected to a estata port. One of the drives assigned letter K often comes up as E and I have to change as application is looking for K. Another disk in this dock works fine. No problems.
Does anyone know why this might be happening or anyway to prevent?
Seems like when I go to disk management and assign K it should stay that way.

Try assigning a drive letter a "distance" away from your existing drive letters.

For example, change the dock drive letter to Z and see how you get on with that.

Leave the pata as master, plug in the sata and reboot. OS will assign new drive letter to the sata and you should be able to see it.

One of my favorite tips is to pre-format the HD on another computer to the partitions that you want for the new install on the new computer. Sometimes SATA drivers are required during install either from Disc or USB flash drive containing the correct Sata drivers needed.
Also check your Bios setting for AHCI, SATA, IDE.

Can I add an SSD drive to an Envy 15 or do I have to replace the original drive?

Solved!
View Solution.

A:Can I add an SSD drive to an Envy 15?

Yes assuming the SSD is large enough to hold all the data that was on the old drive you can do "clone with resizing" from the old drive to the new. I use Acronis to do that and they offer a fully functional 30 day trial which would work to clone one drive. You will need a usb to SATA adapter to hang the new drive on the computer and access it for the cloning procedure. On an SSD, though you probably are going to be cramped for space and you may want to just make the recovery disks with just the C:/> drive image and install the OS on the SSD using those disks and forget about having a recovery partition on the SSD. If you do that, you will not need to buy a usb to sata adapter. You could also just clone the C:\> drive to the SSD using acronis and keep the old drive to use for recovery if you ever need to do so later.

Has anyone undertaken an upgrade of the hard drive in a Libretto U100 to a SSD? This would surely improve performance significantly. What dimension is the hard drive in the U100 and what connector is used to attach the drive? Can anyone advise if this mod is possible?

A:Upgrading hard drive in Libretto U100 to SSD Drive

So, I have a machine with an SSD drive (Tecra M5) and it works like a charm. Unfortunately the drives are too expensive at the moment but you can gain some real performance.

Regarding your question: Should be possible. You have a 1.8" inch drive installed and there are SSD drives which have almost the same form factor. Usually the U100 was shipped with MK6006GAH or MK3006GAL drives.

Here?s a site which could help you, since the drive has the same connector like the drive in your machine: http://www.dvnation.com/microatapics.html

Just check it out and I hope you can use my hint for further research on SSD drives.. :)

Yes the new part is compatible.  You can find the compatible parts here:http://partsurfer.hp.com/search.aspx BUT remember that the Windows Key would not work if you change the HDD and do clean install. I have used Acronis True Image to clone the hard drive.
I restarted and everything copied over in DOS successfully but then i tried to boot off of the sata drive and everything seemed to work out fine.. Vista load bar showed up, i was able to enter my password to log in and then it said preparing desktop like it was the first time i installed vista.
It was stuck on that screen for a few mins and then a blank blue screen just came up.
it seemed like it was the default background for Windows 2000 or something like that and it just stayed there.

So now i'm back to booting off of the IDE drive...

anyone know what i'm doing wrong?

My systems are all rather old -- running Pentium CPU s in pin sockets drive a drive IDE an connected is boot when SATA from Can't From the time I built them they have run Windows XP now with SP installed on IDE drives Rock solid and stable Two are on ABIT IS Can't boot from a SATA drive when an IDE drive is connected -- one a V and one an E -- motherboards and two are on ABIT IC G motherboards Recently with the dramatic price drops on SATA drives I bought two of the Western Digital black GB drives planning to make them the C drives in the two machines I use most to get a boost in speed I had no trouble installing Windows XP to the WD drive and the speed improvement as measured by HDTach is very impressive So long as the only drive connected is the SATA drive the system s boot and run perfectly I had planned to reformat the old GB Seagate IDE drives that used to be C drives and use them for file storage If I connect an IDE drive to either of the IDE connectors on the motherboard where the SATA drive is set to be the boot drive bootup fails with an error message saying no OS was found etc I have read the manuals carefully and can t find any information on getting SATA and IDE drives to play nice together I had assumed there was some place in BIOS to do this -- but so far as I can tell there isn t There doesn t appear to be a place in the BIOS to set boot to be SATA instead of IDE and it is clearly defaulting to the IDE drive if an IDE drive is present I could just buy another WD SATA drive but I have all of these Seagate GB drives that would make superb archive drives Seems a shame to not use them -- if only I can figure out how to do that Any help or suggestions would be appreciated nbsp

My systems are all rather old -- running Pentium 4 CPU's in 478 pin sockets. From the time I built them, they have run Windows XP (now with SP3 installed) on IDE drives. Rock solid and stable. Two are on ABIT IS7 -- one a V2 and one an E -- motherboards and two are on ABIT IC7 G motherboards.

Recently with the dramatic price drops on SATA drives I bought two of the Western Digital black 640 GB drives planning to make them the C drives in the two machines I use most to get a boost in speed. I had no trouble installing Windows XP to the WD drive and the speed improvement as measured by HDTach is very impressive. So long as the only drive connected is the SATA drive the system(s) boot and run perfectly. I had planned to reformat the old 500 GB Seagate IDE drives that used to be C drives and use them for file storage. If I connect an IDE drive to either of the IDE connectors on the motherboard where the SATA drive is set to be the boot drive, bootup fails with an error message saying no OS was found etc. I have read the manuals carefully and can't find any information on getting SATA and IDE drives to play nice together. I had assumed there was some place in BIOS to do this -- but so far as I can tell, there isn't. There doesn't appear to be a place in the BIOS to set boot to be SATA instead of IDE, and it is clearly defaulting to the IDE drive if an IDE drive is present.

I could just buy another WD SATA drive, but I have all of these Seagate 500 GB drives that would make superb archive drives. Seems a shame to not use them -- if only I can figure out how to do that.

Take out the IDE HDD and install them into USB 2.0 external cases. Drag the data files to the new SATA instead. This is what I would do. See if you had the OS on IDE and then use the SATA on it's channel then they would work that way. There was some issues in the past where the both don't work so well when used as the man boot drive. I am sure you have all the drivers and chipsets for the MOBO (motherboard).

HI,

I'm trying to assign a drive letter to my sata drive via the computer management utility.

The drive is listed but when I right click the only option available is delete partition.

I want to assign a drive letter so that I can access this drive to hopefully repair a problem I'm having with a corrupt system file that I have listed in another forum.

Howdy,

I have a fairly new PC ( http://shop3.outpost.com/product/4650538#detailed ) that has 4 SATA ports. The original drive was is from the Western Digital SATA Caviar line http://www.westerndigital.com/en/products/Products.asp?DriveID=116&Language=en . Sadly this drive failed last weekend. I ran a utility to rebuild the master boot record, that did not allow the system to boot up. Now I am simply hoping to recover the data on it, so I picked up an identical drive, removed the old one and used the system restore DVD to recreate the system as originally configured. After that I plugged in the old drive and now every time the system boots, it tries to boot off the original drive. I've switched cables around without success and I can't seem to find anything in the BIOS for selecting the boot drive. What am I missing here?

Regards,

DM_Tim

A:Setting a SATA drive as the boot drive

Welcome to Techspot!

An easy solution if your system has the right characteristics?
Check your manuals etc and see if your system can Hot Swap the SATA's, if so disconnect the old drive and boot to windows on the new drive .
Carefully plug in the old drive on another channel ,then just capture your files in explorer the old drive should show up.
