Q: HP Z240 Tower Compatible with GeForce GTX970

I just got a HP Z240 Tower with a 400W power supply, 32 GB of RAM and 512 GB M.2 SSD. Is the GeForce GTX 970 Graphics card compatible? My PCIe v3 x16 slot is available.

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Greetings, The 400 power supply could be an issue. A stock GTX 970 lists a recommended 500 watt power supply. You have to verify the 10.1 inch to 10.5 inch card will fit in your chassis. You should have the required UEFI BIOS if the system is brand new and you have a PCIe x16 3.0 slot available on the system board. Cheers!

Hi all

Purchased a new CyberPower Gaming Elite II PC 2 days ago and have since been unable to get a signal going from the NVIDIA GeForce GTX970 to my monitor. Granted it is an old monitor with a VGA connection and so have used the adapter that came with the computer to convert it to DVI but still, there's no signal going to the monitor. Do I need to upgrade my monitor? I have tested a HDMI cable going from the PC to my TV but that doesn't seem to provide a signal either! I'm out of options that I can think of!

Any help greatly appreciated,

Kind Regards,

Alright hey guys so I have been doing quite a bit of research talked to some friends and other forums and have come to the conclusion that upgrading my gpu will be a good call Anyways after talking to a few people and a few computer experts I have been suggested to upgrade my gpu to a gtx which I think will be great The other issue I came across was whether with want it all gtx970 will 8500 upgrading dell psu xps sure make geforce new to work! and or not the PSU will be able to handle that kind of upgrade So after looking through some other people s suggestions and upgrading dell xps 8500 with geforce gtx970 and new psu want to make sure it will all work! seeing what some other people have done that upgraded their xps I was suggested to go with the EVGA supernova B W power supply PSU -B - -VR the reason behind this one specifically was that it was quite a bit smaller in length so in tern I would be able to fit it in the tower and thats what other people have used when upgrading their xps Anyways sorry this is lengthy but I want to make sure this is a good idea whether or not everything will fit properly and any other general suggestions thanks

If I purchase a mATX motherboard, this one to be exact ... Will it require a mATX Case or can I use a regular ATX Case? Also any opinions on that MB?

A:ATX tower compatible with mATX MotherBoard?

In the case, idk if that case will hold mATX, but all you would have to do is move the motherboard standoff's to the right holes for an mATX mobo.
Most cases have the holes marked with a letter or something stamped so you can figure it out easilly.

Hi, I'm using an 755 SFF now and the system is operating wll. However the adding of a better grafic card is problematic cause of the limited space.

Now I'm thinking of finden a (evt. defect Mini Tower model) and put the motherboard, HDrive of the 755 SFF into the larger Mini Tower case and buy a better grafics card.

Are the components compatible?

A:Motherboard etc. 755 SFF compatible with the Mini Tower?

Yes everything would work well however from what I know your motherboard is smaller it will go in to the chassis though none of the expansion slots will align with the chassis slots as your motherboard as smaller than the chassis. I suggest you pick up a 755 MT motherboard for full compatibility and by the way these are like $50 or maybe less and you could just put all your current hardware on it (cpu, ram ,hard drive cable, etc) with no capability issues.

is it possible to modify a tower to install a "compact" motherboard?
the motherboard is GeForce 8200 mGPU that i have laying around and i also have a spare Sharkoon AL4 tower. obviously the mother board will not fit but if i was to modify the screw holes, would this work?
i know it will fit right but really, if everything fits right and nothing is loose i shouldn't have a problem right?

GeForce 8200 mGPU is an ATX form factor mothrboard. It's not compact.

A:can i assume that a geforce 8600 gt will be compatible...

No, you cannot make that assumption. The 8600 is a PCI-E card while the 6600GT comes in both PCI-E and AGP. You will need to know what kind of graphics card controller your motherboard has, PCI-E x16 or AGP 8x/4x.

You can find out what motherboard model you have by bringing up the Start > Run box and typing "dxdiag" without the quotes and hit Enter.

Here's what a quick Google turned up. They're effectively the same, if I understand correctly, except with better heat management on the newer card. Also, what type of VRAM do your old 8600s have? What is the "cost" you're citing?

SDF15, it has been a while since we last conversed.  I found a solution to the Nvidia GeForce 7150/nForce630M driver issues posted by "msddjd" titled Can't find GeForce 7150M/nForce 630 M Driver for Windows 10.  In that post the simple answer was to just reinstall the original Nvidia drivers. The only additional step I found necesary was to install Windows 10 via an ISO image because Microsoft refused to allow automatic update for this platform (dv2620us).  Once that was accomplished and all the warnings about display issues were dismissed I downloaded and installed the original Vista/Win7 Nvidia display drivers for this computer.   This of course was a good solution for the dv2620us notebook as well as the hardware msddjd was concerned with.  Not sure it's a solution for everyone, but well worth a try.  I have not found anything in Windows 10 that does not work with this configuration.  So, I'd consider this a solved issue ... finally! Wohoo!  Just thought you'd like to know and thanks again. Dawntreader><> To save time for anyone reading this, here are the instructions from msddjd: Re: Cant find GeForce 7150M/nForce 630 M Driver for Windows 10?08-01-2015 11:04 AM - edited ?08-01-2015 11:39 AM  I was able to find a temporary fix until they hopefully release an updated driver for windows 10. 1. I downloaded the following file from NVIDIA. Select the appropriate one for your system. 64bit: 32bit: 2. Installed it and restarted Windows 10 3. Launch the device manager and extended the display adapters 4. Right clicked on the sub item and selected "update driver software" 5. Then selected "Browse my computer for driver software" 6. Tell Windows to search in the following directory which should have been created by the application that was downloaded "C:\NVIDIA". Make sure the search subdirectories check box is checked. 7. Once it finished the GeForce 7150/nForce 630M was successfully installed on Windows 10. I was able to install it using the 64 bit version but I assume it will work for the other version too as long as it is the correct one for your system.

hi, I am going to upgrade my graphic card to ATI 5770 so I need a new power supply which has power about 550--600 watt. But the most frustrating problem is that I failed to find a proper power supply with the correct dimension.
I have an HP pavilion e9300 which uses a very wired power supply tower-150mm(W) 86(H) 140(D). But so far all the PSUs I found is the standard size --150mm(W) 86(H) 150(D) which cannot fit in my setup.

So could any PC God give me some suggestion, please??
Is any PSU with the size of my tower or can I just simply install a bigger PSU which can still successfully power up the comptuer?

Thx in adance.

If the power supply will physically fit your case, it should work fine with your computer. Will the extra 10mm interfere internally with anything inside the PC?

A few days ago I put together a tower for my son with an Asus Z97 pro motherboard and the GTX970 graphics card.
We have it connected to a tv via hdmi until my son can get himself a monitor.
Our issue is that 1 minute I turn the tower on and everything is working fine.
The next time I turn tower on the tower itself lights up but we have no picture.
The graphics card driver is up to date.
I have tried with different hdmi leads also.
Hoping someone could please assist me.

A:Help with GTX970

This begs the question Shane mate is the TV ok?? and even more obvious - sorry but have to ask have you got a dedicated AV channel picked out on the TV?

I would suggest reseating the GPU too and perhaps even this
Now as for the slots to clean them use a strip of old credit card about 1/2 inch wide nip the corners off one end - preferably round them offhold a piece of thin lint free cloth over the end dab on some form of alcohol - iso propyl alcohol (what we swab the skin with before an injection) is good and GENTLY swipe along the slots.
This can also be done for the GPU slot/s and do not forget to clean the contacts on the cards / sticks either.
It is an idea to clean the contacts on the sticks / cards while you are at it but be VERY gentle when doing this.

The next thing to look at is this
UsingHW Info PSU

Download HW Info and pick the right bit version - HWiNFO, HWiNFO32/64 - Download -(copyand paste this site into the search bar) If you do not need the runninginformation in the smaller right hand panel close it. In the left hand windowclick on the + for the individual device groupings and they will open out tothe various components.

Go on opening out further until you get to the device itself. click on it andit will highlight. In the right hand window there will be a very detaileddescription of that device as in brand, speeds model number etc etc These arevery detailed and are just what is needed for searching for drivers etc.

To getthe PSU volts you need to select the Sensor button circled in yellow in the picfor PSU testing do the same and scroll down the readout as in my pic to whereit has Nuvoton = yours might be a different section name / title. Post back apic of that please.

If you want a more definitive test see this butlease only use a digital multimeter and not an analogue as they injecttypically 9v into a circuit to test and into a 3.3v or 5v rail - not a good idea!!see the partial pic of the correct sort of meter in that tutorial. details ifyou scroll down that listing.

Now a good reference article is this
Voltage Rails - Power Supply 101: A Reference Of Specifications it will explain in detail what the voltages are and functions of the PSU/
Could be something as simple as lack of power to the GPU or board.

I was running two AMD 6870 in SLI with no problems but recently updated to a Asus Strix GTX970.

The same games I was playing with no problems are now constantly crashing (5/10 minutes of gaming) - black screen and windows sounds on background OR just black screen with no sound OR reboot. It works fine doing normal tasks on windows.

At first I though it could be a driver issue, so I uninstalled, I installed again. The issue remained.

My rig:
Asus Z87 Pro
I5 4670k
Kingston 8GB DDR3
Corsair 800W
Windows 10 64bits

During the last crash I got a memory dump (but not during the others, so it may be a coincidence) - attached.

Haven't done any overclocking.

Did you uninstall the AMD drivers completely? I doubt that you'd see an improvement if you ran a driver remover, but it may be worth a try.

A:Upgrade Extreme4 Gen 3 P67 Mobo for GTX970 and i7 4790k?

Your motherboard is designed for the socket LGA 1155 series of Intel processors. The i7 4790k that you ordered is the newest Intel 4th generation of cpus called Haswell. It is a socket LGA 1150 processor and will not work in your current board as per ASRock specs.

Also, 8 gigs is more than enough for gaming. Unless you are doing video rendering and graphics intensive applications you don't need 12 or 16 gigs of RAM

so after a Nvidia driver update, I restarted my PC to find that it would switch to windows basic after 1-2 minutes and I couldn't revert it, I tried re running WEI, uninstalling the drivers completely, basically everything I can find, even Regedit and services.msc. I tried to play games that used to run fine and they now stutter all the time and get a low FPS. rolling back the driver doesn't help and some fixes worked temporarily but needed to be reapplied every startup but now those don't work. Is there anything I'm missing?

A:Nvidia GTX970 aero unsupported error, games stutter frequently

Download the latest driver for your card from here and save it to your desktop or other convenient location. Uninstall your GPU through Device Manager then shut the PC down, remove the power card and remove the card from the PC, then reseat the card and reboot.

Install the latest driver you downloaded previously and you should be good to go.

If secure boot is enabled in BIOS, try disabling it and enable legacy boot. Also in case you are using NVME SSD, then you may need to inject the corresponding driver

I am trying to setup my new HP Z240 workstation, but cannot get the graphics card to operate at any resolution above 1024 X 768. The graphics card is an NVIDIA QUADRO K620. It is connected to the monitor with a DVI-D Dual link cable. The monitor is an HP w2408. The monitor has two inputs (DVI and VGA). I have the VGA input connected to another HP computer with a NVIDIA GeForce GT 610 card (this computer/card/monitor displays at 1920 x1200). When I checked the adapter modes (using the list modes option), the best mode listed is 1024 x 768. The NVIDIA spec sheet lists the max resolution with DVI-I as 2560 x 1600 or 1920 x 1200. What can I do to get the max resolution from my monitor (1920 x 1200)?

Update.  Problem solved. When I realized that the monitor in DVI mode was not being recognized as PNP, it pointed to the monitor as the problem. Installed new monitor, everythng works as it should. Evidently the VGA input to the old monitor functioned properly while the DVI portion was defective (card or cable connection). Dave6666

Hi: Please post the hardware ID for the USB controller that needs the driver. To find the hardware ID, go to the device manager and click on the device needing the driver. Then click on the Details tab at the top of the device window. Now you will see a Property drop down list, and it will be set to Device Description. Drop down on that list, and select the 2nd item (Hardware ID's). Post the top string of characters that you see in the window.

A:Updating Firmware for Z240

When you run HP service packs, they will expand and place their contents under an own directory within C:\swsetup.Specifically in your case, if you run sp74202.exe, you should see a new directory C:\swsetup\SP74202 has been created with the contents of the service pack within. Alternatively you can use 7-zip to peek inside the service pack exe without running it since the exe is a self extracting zip file that runs the installer once decompressed  In any case, a newer ME update exists here but i'd first apply the latest system firmware update available here. When looking at the HP service pack links above, it's good practice to selectively click each "Description", "Enhancements", "Installation Instructions" "Release Notes" "Fixes" and "Revision History" tabs and read the information (some of it is repetative but you'll soon learn where to focus your attension). The contents of these tabs contain important and relevant information on what has been improved, fixed, which system it's for, how to install the update, etc. And if a previously installed SP is not listed in the "revision history" tab, that release may have been pulled by HP due to some fauly behaviour or other issue! Pay particular attension to the prerequisits as in some instances firmware updates have to be stepped (that is you can't always simply apply the latest). And if you read such boaring stuff, the system firmware (BIOS) Installation Instructions tab would have given you a clue where the sp files are expanded to  Have you tried simply enter the command (as specified) via a command prompt window but changing directories to where the FWUpdLcl.exe file is located? Just keep in mind that sp74202 is the initial ME firmware release so nothing sould update  So best to apply the latest system firmware (BIOS), then the ME firmware, then maybe the latest ME software (under chipset drivers). Best to bookmark this page which lists all the downloads for your z240 Windows 10 64bit tower system so check it out periodically.

The 7400 is the best option, since it's fastest, but you may not need a faster video card if you don't do activities that require a fast video card. This link may be helpful.

Hello, My company recently purchased some Z240 SFF workstations and put in aftermarket multi-media card readers in the 3.5" slot. The card reader uses the internal USB 3.0 header, so I had to unplug the USB 3.0 cable for the for the front usb ports in order to get it to work. The media card reader works just fine in Windows, however, I get a POST error message on startup: "Cable detection Error 41A- Front USB2 Not Connected. Front USB cable has been detached or unseatted from the motherboard. Press Enter to continue." Is there anyway to disable POST messages? I can't seem to find anything in the UEFI/BIOS to do this.

A:Z240 POST Message disable?

One of the HP engineers who has been very helpful to us here has recently posted on a related question, and he has access to the schematics and the internal design details of these workstations.  His post is on this thread,  HERE : Dan tells how to jumper the header to make it believe the cable is still connected, and it would not matter whether you jumpered at the motherboard end or the far plug end, as long as you got the correct pins/plug holes jumpered. Note his caution.... that seems to suggest that the pins on the motherboard are not as stout as the ones we are used to seeing.  A proper sized insulated wire jumper with a short segment of wire exposed at each end can be used as a jumper at the far plug end of a cable, rather than the little plastic jumpers we use at the motherboard pin end of thins.  If you carefully figure out the wire colors this should work. The wiring of such headers/cables within a HP workstation family are usually the same, and things can stay the same from one generation to another, in my experience.

Hi, I had a look inside and the Z Turbo drive appears to be connected to the motherboard (location 23 on the motherboard map in the manual) and not using a SATA port or any of the four main PCIe3 slots. Only one of the PCIe3 slots is being used and that is for the NVIDIA graphics card, and only one of the SATA ports is being used and that is for the Slim BluRay drive (connected to SATA3). That means there are 3 x SATA ports available, and 2 x 3.5" and 1 x 2.5" bays available, by the looks of it. My question is, is it possible to put 3 x HDD/SSD drives in it, i.e. 2 x 3.5" and 1 x 2.5"?

Hello matt_william,  If you are using a retail version of Windows 7 Operating System. You may have to install the Intel Rapid Storage Technology driver while installing the OS. On the HDD partition windows, you will get LOAD DRIVER option, you have to install Intel Rapid Storage Technology driver.   Please find below link to download Intel Rapid Storage Technology driver. NOTE: THIS ACTIVITY NEED TO BE PERFORMED ON ANOTHER UNIT.   TO USE THE INTEL RAPID STORAGE TECHNOLOGY DRIVER DURING A NEW OPERATING SYSTEM INSTALLATION: 1. Download the file by clicking the "Download" or "Obtain Software" button and saving the file to a folder on your hard drive (make a note of the folder where the downloaded file is saved). 2. Double-click the downloaded file and follow the on-screen instructions. 3. Navigate to C:\SWSETUP\SP73487 and unzip "" to a USB key for a 64-bit installation. 4. Use the newly created driver installation media during operating system setup to install the drivers.  Once you copy the driver on another USB media, connect it with unit on which you are trying to install OS.  Click on Load Driver and navigate to USB and install the driver. Once the installation is complete, You will be able to access HDD and will be able to install OS.  I hope that answers your question.  I am an HP employee, the opinions expressed here are my personal opinions, not of HP. Make it easier for other people to find solutions, by marking my answer ?Accept as Solution? if it solves your problem. ***Click on "Thumbs up" button to the left side of my post to acknowledge the post ***

Hi all, I got a Z240 SFF workstation with a 512G HP Z Turbo Drive G2 intalled on M.2 slot as a boot drive. I recently add a 1.2T Intel 750 PCIe SSD on PCIe slot 4 for additional storage. However after the Intel 750 SSD was intalled, the computer began to shutdown automaticly after couple of minutes running. The issue will be fixed after remove the Intel 750 SSD. The system is running 64bit Win10, with Samsung NVMe Driver. The Intel 750 SSD can also be read and write when installed and Intel Data Center Tool shows that the SSD is healthy. I think the auto shutdown issue is related to overheating on 750 SSD. I am wondering if the motherboard of Z240 SFF is compatible with Intel 750 SSD. Does anyone have Intel 750 PCIe SSD installed on their Z240 SFF or any other Z Workstation? Thanks! NOS_ATX

It appears that newly shipping Z240 Tower workstations DO NOT have an internal USB header anymore?  The System Board Overview graphic in the Maintenance & Service Guide (Oct 2015) shows #7 as a USB 2.0 internal header.  However, the location where the header should be on the system board is actually a 1x6 pin header (P150) listed as "MEDIA".  The other USB 2.0 Header, #5, is taken up as the front USB cable. So is there an updated manual that shows what is actually on the system board?  The Z240 Tower QuickSpec is dated March 2016, so I'm hoping there is a newer manual out there somewhere.   Any idea what the P150 MEDIA header is for?  Is this for the old media card readers?  I have the optional SD card reader, but that is attached to #8 which is the internal USB 3.0 header. Any way to attach deveices that need an internal USB 2.0 header?

When running an SCCM 2012 R2 task sequence to install Windows 10 on a Z240, the network driver is working in Windows PE during the download and apply Windows image. I'm using Auto Apply Drivers step and after it's completed, the computer restarts into the Windows 10 OS, tries to set up the devices and then the task sequence fails because there is no network driver detected that it can use. I've tried to import multiple types of network drivers from both HP and Intel with no success. I've tried to specifically apply the Z240 driver package instead of using Auto Apply Drivers with no success. I've also tried to install a Windows 8.1 image instead and it still fails at the same point. I'm confused because it works fine in PE, but not after restarting and booting into the Windows OS. Any help or suggestions would be appreciated.

Hi: Do you have the same issue with the same hardware ID? If not, please post the hardware ID for the HDA device that needs the driver. I only see W10 graphics driver for the nvidia graphics adapter.

I can't get new Z workstation to boot into WinPE on Windows x Windows x and Windows x with only and NVMe drive installed to the M slot on the MB I've tried plain OEM Media and WDS with WinPE with different drivers added to the boot wim file all no luck nbsp It seems there must be some sort of bug relating to the Samsung nbsp pro nbsp M nbsp NVMe GB drive I'm using When I leave this as the only drive CDRW the computer always hangs as soon as WinPE starts If I leave the Samsung NVMe drive installed and add another SATA drive such as a Samsung Pro SSD it behaves fine- WinPE then loads and I can see both drives nbsp I was able to install Windows nbsp on the NVMe drive and booted into Win as long as the SATA drive was present As soon as I removed the nbsp SATA drive nbsp and it starts loading windows it immediately hangs again nbsp It shouldn't be NVMe driver support as Windows WinPE has native windows when or booting Samsung... hangs Workstation WinPE Z240 NVMe support and has the same problem so it must be something else I suspect it's either something I have to turn off in the BIOS or some other BIOS UEFI bug nbsp Has anyone seen this before nbsp Thanks nbsp Edit Z has latest BIOS

A:BSOD with Gigabyte G1 Gaming GTX970 in SLI while gaming

I've been having a very similar issue, I've only got the one Gigabyte 970 G1, and I've only really tested 2 games (AC Unity and Civ Beyond Earth) and while playing both after usually a few hours they'll freeze then I'll get a bsod. They're always Bug Check Code: 0x00000124 and all have the Crash Address: ntoskrnl.exe+4ae61c.

I've run windows memory diagnostic with no results, I've reseated my card, performed multiple clean driver installs, checked temperatures with no problems. I can't figure out what's causing it and this is the only similar problem I can find online. I really wish I could help but it seems we're in much the same boat

Which should I choose? They all go around the same price...

A:ATI Radeon 9800XT vs GeForce 6800 vs GeForce 6600GT

It depends on which maker, really. But in general, the 6800 is the best of the three listed, followed by the 6600GT, then the 9800XT.

Looking at these cards there is a bit of a price difference, the MSI is ?479 and the ASUS is ?299.
The MSI does have better specifications than the ASUS so in performance I would go with the MSI. Although for value for money the ASUS is very good! So if I was just going for performance I would choose the MSI but if I wanted value for money then the ASUS is the one I would go for!
