I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hi guys - this is a weird problem that I ve always had since building this computer or years ago and I don t think the drive was new when I built it so it went from totally normal in my xp machine to doing this weird thing when I put it in a new system with Win I ve searched and not been able to find anyone with the same problem It normally occurs when listening to music or watching a film and it only happens very occasionally when you go to skip to to a new song or skip to a different place in the video It s never been a Some then HD until whirs clicks apps unresponsive major problem and in fact I think it s only done it once this week so aside from googling it a couple of times never actually got very far with fixing it So in winamp for example just after opening it I ll click next song winamp installation and music are on different hard drives as are VLC and movies and it ll freeze Then the disk will make a whir and about seconds later there will be a click and everything will come Some apps unresponsive until HD whirs then clicks back to life During this time I can move my mouse and do other things on the computer Like I said it s always done this and it s never got any worse or anything so I don t think it s a faulty drive but I ll post this in the HD section too just to see if any experts there can shed any light on it Thanks for your help nbsp

Hey, I was trying to setup an adhoc connection, but I'm faced with a dilemma.
I have internet via an ethernet cable, so I want to spread this wifi using my laptop's wifi connection.
However, whenever I connect the ethernet cable to my laptop and it's connected to the internet, the wifi light on my keyboard automatically turns red and the wifi router no longer works, hence I cannot create the adhoc connection.
After I remove the ethernet cable, the wifi light turns back on, and I'm able to create an adhoc network, but I won't have any internet to spread since, well, the ethernet cable is not plugged in...

I have an HP running on Windows 7.
Both ethernet and wifi adapters are fine.

How do I prevent my ethernet connection from shutting down my wifi router??

Thanks everyone!

A:Wifi router turning off automatically

Hmm; IMO, Windows is attempting to keep you out of hot water.

Your PC WiFi is not intended to act like an open hotspot. I you what 'guest' connects via wifi, you should manage that in the router setup (several have the option for guest vs lan users).

You were to create this kind of network:

router = = PC - - wif - - guests
The routing table needs special entries and in effect, you would be creating a dual-home environment (the guests could just as easily be a secondary ISP).

Normally, 99.999% of the time I just shut it down completely but I'd like to know what "sleep" means?
Does that mean if I do so, upon opening the lid it'll be where I left it at?
I notice in Control Panel>Power Options>System Settings whether its on battery or plugged in , it shows sleep.

A:Choose What closing the lid does?

I recommend sleeping the laptop if you are gonna use it after you close it within the next few hours. Otherwise shut it down.

Few Questions

My Cpu is an intel i5-3570k it should be 3.4 ghz and Maxes to 3.8

something in the bios seems to make my cpu take benefit in games and gets my cpu up to 4.1 ghz sometimes

I am using the Stock Cooler

Max temp ive seen atm is like 41Celcius

when will I be looking at problems which temeprature should be the stop point and which will be making my chip degrade

any help would be grateful

A:Core i5-3570k overclocked automatically? Do I need a custom cooler?

I bet you have an ASUS motherboard, they have preset OCs. 41C is fine, but I would recommend buying this cooler just to stay safe: 212 evo&IsVirtualParent=1
It will extend the life of the CPU. Plus, disable turbo boost when OCing.
If you want to go beyond the 4.5GHz mark (look for safe OCs online first), buy this:
Note: Sometimes heavily overclocked CPUs have a shortened life.

Hello, I have a dell inspiron b130 that I've built from scratch, long story! anyway my wifi will work if I manualy install ip address. however it will not work when switched to auto. it worked wonerfuly until I installed windows xp sp3. I worked on it for 2 days to get it to work, nothing. eventualy I uninstalled sp3 now I have this problem. another prob I'm ha'ven is that I can not find a driver for the ethernet controller. I find files but they dont load onto cump. the pci card is broadcom 170c aka 4401 I have gotten downloads from dell and broadcom both do same thing. some help would be nice, thanks

A:Dell laptop Wi-Fi will not connect automatically, ethernet broke

Not mentioning your OS is part of the problem here.
I recently re did a Vista, (tower) turned into XP Pro & could get wifi but no ethernet.
After installing ALL the updates, I finally got my ethernet.
I would suggest putting SP3 back & on not being too concerned about wifi yet.
Hopefully someone else can help you further.

Sadly the problem is still there. I'm not sure what the problem could be when it says my microphone is disable but somehow it still activates when i watch videos or my internet pages are loading. Checkout DropBox as a possible solution

Make sure you use a PRIVATE Dropbox folder

Hi all,

The first computer I connect to the wireless works fine, but I have had to self-assign IP addresses for other computers/devices using the 10.0.1.x spectrum. I originally thought it was a problem with my airport express. However, my roommate recently tried to plug directly to the modem and his computer did not get an IP address (he changed his settings to allow for an automatic assignment). Is this something I can fix on my own or do I have to call the ISP and maybe get the modem replaced? Or is it easy enough they can diagnose over the phone? Any advice or thoughts would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

A:Modem and airport express won't automatically assign IP addresses

FIRST, make sure your firewall allows port 67 & 68 access both ways.

I recently upgraded my video card to a 9500gt 512 with native HDMI out. Now I use my 26" Panasonic HDTV instead of a computer monitor.

However, I have one little issue. My screen seems to automatically dim and brighten depending on how much light and dark space is on the screen. For instance, if I pull up a blank white notepad, the screen will dim (quite dramatically).

I have all my graphics card drivers up to date. I have the nVidia software installed and took a thorough look through the options, but there were no settings that had anything to do with auto-dim/brighten. This leads me to think the TV is the culprit. Anybody have any ideas about how I can stop this phenomenon?

I wouldn't mind the auto-dim/brighten feature, but I am a photographer which requires that I have a monitor with constant (and relatively accurate) monitor brightness, color, contrast, etc. when editing photos.

A:Screen Automatically Dims and Brightens

It's probably the TV's dynamic contrast feature. TVs and LCD monitors use these features so that they can advertise insane contrast ratios like 50,000:1 to appear "better" than the competition.

You should be able to turn it off in the TV options somewhere.

I have an Intel Core 2 CPU 2.4GHz with 2GB RAM desktop, and recently I just took the CPU fan out to clean it out (and checked the CPU paste while i was at it).

When I turn my computer on, it turns it's self off, automatically, after about 1-5 minutes.

The fan works, and it's not heating up like mad.

A:CPU - Computer automatically shuts down (desktop)

The heatsink is supposed to be heating up, because that would mean that it is effectively diffusing the heat from the CPU. If it doesn't, that means the CPU cooler is not fastened correctly. Re-seat your CPU cooler and make sure you fasten the pins correctly (I assume you're using the Intel stock fan, with the tricky mounting system).

In the last two days, the "7" key and the "home" key have been typing on their own. It seems to get worse (the keys type more frequently) the longer the computer is running. I scanned for viruses but didn't find anything.

I have tested old speakers with the OLD audio card, which is still installed above my new Audiphile one. Old speakers work PERFECTLY, so it is NOT the CPU or PC. It is either the SPEAKERS or the AUDIOPHILE sound card. How do I find out? I have no other speakers that connect to the Audiophile card, and I have no other PC with a card that can test the speakers.

Anyone have an educated decision? A popping noise every 10 seconds or so, on and off, sometimes never happens...audiocard most likely, right? The speakers were bought brand new, M-Audio Studio Pro 3's. They seem just fine.

Any ideas?

So i just Put together a brand new computer with a Core Duo E and an Asus P B-E Mobo I turned it on for the first time and went into the Bios to monitor temperature There I discovered the cpu temp was degrees C All fans are running correctly and the heatsink fan was installed correctly I turned the computer off as soon as possible to ponder this problem I came accros this article in my research http www techimo com forum t html basically it says that the Mobo was reading the temp on the cpu wrong I went back and turned on my computer for about Minute untill the temp hit c then I touched my heatsink and it felt about room temperature maybe a little cooler So my question is Could this board have a screwy temperature gauge Or is my Mobo overclocking my cpu right outta the box Thanks for any help you can contribute nbsp

A:a mobo that automatically overclocks? or just a faulty Temp Gauge

Well, that thread did say that the mobo has temp sensor problems.

btw, I don't think its possible to get your heatsink to below room temp . It is just physically impossible. The reason why it feels that way is because metal is a much better heat conductor than air, and therefore is conducting away your body heat faster than the air around you, thus feeling colder.

Just a little info for you
Core2Duos have a max operating temp of 66C or something like that, the last time I checked. In fact, no Intel chips for PC have a max operating temp of over 70C (maybe a couple) the last time I checked, so if its registering 85C, your CPU is ready to explode or your mobo sensor is stuffed up.

I'm betting your mobo sensor is stuffed up.

If you're still worried, time to get an aftermarket CPU heatink+fan. Then you might be able to do some overclocks as well

But, starting yesterday, it keeps automatically rebooting randomly. It can range from 2 minutes to 2 hours after the start of the session. Someone suggested this is due to the Temporary Internet Files, or the files in the "Documents and Settings\Administrator\Local Settings\Temp" folder...
Even after deleting these, the problem persisted. I have updated all my drivers, and still no result. Can anyone please help?

A:Big problem, PC will not/will shut off automatically

Hello and welcome to Techspot.

Looks like you`ve tried all the right things.

It has to be either a loose connection/component, a dodgy start switch or a short somewhere.

You could try taking everything out of the case and building it on a piece of cardboard. That would rule out a short with the case.

If that doesn`t help, then I agree with your assessment that it`s either the psu or mobo. Try another psu and see if that helps.

Take a look at this thread HERE, before you replace the PSU.

My CPU heatsink fan doesn't automatically speed up like it used to when the CPU usage stays high for a long period of time.

The stupid decision from my side that I believe might have lead to this problem is this: I wanted to remove dust from the insides of my computer, and since I didn't have a can of air, I used a vaccum cleaner with a hose instead, to suck up all the dust. I put the hose near the heatsink fan blades, making the fan spin crazy fast in hope of getting out the dust.

Is this a unique case of sheer dusting foolishness? Or is this common, and therefore a solution readily available?

I didn't put my specs since I think they're not needed, but I can post them if necessary.

Thanks for your help!

A:CPU fan doesn't automatically speed up anymore.

Welcome to TechSpot

I thought it's recommended to prevent the fan from spinning when vacuuming, so that the high speed doesn't cause damage to the fan bearings.

Hello and welcome to Techspot.

If after trying your other psu it`s still dead, It`s got to be either the mobo or cpu.

I think for whatever reason, you`ve had a short circuit of some kind and it`s fried either the psu/mobo/cpu.

You`ve seem to have tried all the right things, so I can`t really suggest anything else.

If by sleep you mean standby, then you should be able to do that. In the bios, you should be able to select the suspend mode. Chose s3 rather than s1. s1 leaves the fans on, s3 turns them off.

A:new system automatically quits big programs

hello and welcome to Techspot.

First of all download memtest86+ you can either use the floppy version or there is an iso version that you can put on cd.

Let it run untlill it has done at least seven passes and see if it comes up with any errors.

Also you say that your computer just shuts off several times a day do you mean restarts?

If you right click on my computer select properties then the advanced tab then click on settings where it says startup and recovery uncheck the box that says automatically restart also set the write debugging information to none.

Now when your system crashes you should get a blue screen telling you what caused the error.

Look to see if any drivers are identified in the stop message.

Put the parts together outside the case and see if it runs normally. I had a similar problem and it turned out to be the back plate touching one of the motherboard ports.

Last year I lended my hard disk to a friend cos he wanted to format his disk and resize "his drives" (using windows 98 startup floppy!) and did not want to lose any data
when i got it back i noticed that my partions changed from
c->9.** D->10.** E->6.** F->11.6 (approx because of the 38.** i am not sure of exact point figure)
c->9.** D->10.** E->8.88 F-> 8.88
He did not use any software to format just plain format and rezise using fdisk
how is this possible I did not lose any data even!!
today i use partition magic to do all disk partions without losing data

A:HDD partitions got resized automatically!!

Maybe he just copied the data off a partition, deleted the partition and recreated it with new size and finally copied the data back?

Also, there are many FAT32 resizing tools like FIPS that are free and fit on a single floppy.

This is surely a stupid question but I'm a Mac person and just learning about the "other" side.

One of our exec's is having a wake from sleep issue with his IBM Thinkpad (X31). He often has to hastily close the lid with the machine powered on and has difficulty getting it to wake up later.

2 questions.

Is the machine going into standy or hibernation mode when he does this?

What key(s) does he need to mash to wake it up? (preferably in an unlocked state.)

Thanks in advance.

A:Standy or Hibernation when closing lid on powered on laptop?

I believe with XP you can do either as well as just shut off the screen when you close the lid. Check the power option settings in control panel. Click my computer->control panel->power options

I have a user that needs an excel document closed. When you try to open it it will tell you that it is opened but it dosn't tell you by whom so it's read only.

I'm thinking the individual who had it open has closed it since there is no name but that it's stuck in their temp files; in which case they need to reboot but we don't know who needs to reboot and we don't reboot machines on the server at night in case we need to push patches to them.

I've tried copying the files to my HD and deleting them from the server but they always reappear. I tried also to take ownership and then deleting them but that does nothing to help.

Does anyone have any other ideas that DO NOT include rebooting the server?

A:Problems Closing opened documents

Copy the file's contents over into a new spreadsheet. Then save that under a different name. Abandon the file that gives problems, send an email to all possible users until you find the real owner.

I've got a 3D screensaver that uses direct3d and my pc restarts when the screensaver has been on for 10 mins or so. I've got an integrated geforce4 mx 128mb graphics card and a nforce 2 ALBATRON KM18G Pro motherboard.

I would be very grateful if any1 knows what is up or has any suggestions.

I've done the obvious things like update drivers, windows update, virus check, mem test. I really stuck.

Once again id be very grateful for help.

Sometime ago as I was updating my Firefox browser I noticed multiple previous versions in the folder. I can't find that thread so I'm asking if that or similiar happens with other programs such as Avast,CCleaner, M-bam & so on? If so, I think it might be best to use revo to uninstall & reinstall, is that true? I'm only asking because my Vista laptop has slowed a bit & I'm thinking I could speed it up a bit by doing such. My scans continue to come up clean, too. Thanks

Hey, please anyone help me. Recently when I was working on my PC, there was a power cut and my PC shutted down unexpectedly. I have again booted the PC and saw that no windows applications which are on the start menu including the PC settings, windows store are not opening. When I click on them they are just flashing on the screen and remaining on the. Why is this happening? What shall I do to bring my PC to a normal state?

A:Windows apps are not opening

Sounds like windows is corrupted from the unexpected shutdown. Try a system restore from a early time. See if this fixes your problem. If not you have to do a factory reinstall .

Is there any other free apps around that can prevent users from installing all kinds of software, pretty much like Deep Freeze. See I'm running a small internet cafe business, and I hate it when people install all kinds of third-party apps (e.g Yontoo). Kids are regulars here in my cafe and some have no idea what they're doing with the system.

I don't want to use Deep Freeze. I want something simple to use and with much flexibility.

What version of Windows? Win/7 takes care of this by forcing use of the admin/password & the UAC feature.

My Outlook has just started sending all my emails directly into my Deleted Items folder and bypasses the Inbox. I have run 3 anti-virus scans (Avast, Malwarebytes, and Spybot--thorough scans). They found no viruses.

I did go and create a rule for a couple of contacts for them to go into the Inbox. Now they go into the Inbox and the Deleted Items folder.

I am very unsure of what to do now. I would appreciate any help you give me.

A:Outlook automatically sends email to Deleted Items folder

Couple questions.

1) Are you using Full Outlook or Outlook express?
2) Do the times in the deleted folder have any weird tagging on them (in the subject line)?
3) Is this connecting to an exchange server (like at work) or are you just using this for personal emails. (ie what email address are you getting email on )
4) do you remember any thing that you did recently in changing settings/ installing any new software, etc. . .

To be specific, its escan. I tried removing or uninstall the said program but it requires me to provide a password. Now, can someone help me on how to overcome this issue.

You can always boot into safe mode and simply delete it, likely from C:\program files\escan, but thats just a guess.

Whats Up Guys.

For some reason, when I'm doing my normal computing activities, my Firefox window closes for no apparent reason.

I realised I had a problem right now when I was listening to a radio station in a window and that disappeared while the stream kept on playing.

Also, not quite sure if this is related or not, but I have a yellow triangle with a exclamation point that comes up in my start up tray from time to time.

Could any of you guys please give me some help as to why my Firefox windows are closing prematurely like this and to why that yellow triangle is coming up like that.

Any help or direction to helpful threads would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks As Always.

I am running Windows 7 and use the Task Scheduler a lot. But it seems like every time I open it (every two weeks or so), some program has automatically added a task all on its own. "Flash updates", "Real Player updates", etc and so on... even though I've turned "automatic updates" off in those programs. So I delete them, but a few days later, something else is sure to show up and eventually, those tasks I deleted previously also return. Very annoying. It also seems like a huge security loophole.

I there any way to block programs from automatically adding "tasks" to my Task Scheduler without my permission?
