Don't need to eject an expansion drive?

Q: Don't need to eject an expansion drive?

I bought a Seagate Expansion 5TB USB 3.0 3.5" Desktop External Hard Drive.
Not that it's really relevant to explain that other than to illustrate how important it is that I don't blow the thing up, but I bought it to create a disk image in Macrium Reflect Home Edition v6 (which I did), in preparation for upgrading from Win7 to Win10, just in case things go very badly when I do that.
But I notice that when it's plugged in and I right-click on it in Windows Explorer, no "Eject" option appears in the drop-down menu.
So I just unplugged it.
Is "Eject" just not appearing because an expansion drive is made in such a way that no preparation is needed before safely unplugging it?
Or am I risking data loss or worse by unplugging it without preparation?

Preferred Solution: Don't need to eject an expansion drive?

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

A: Don't need to eject an expansion drive?

Down in your tray near the clock should be a "Safely Remove Hardware" button, clicking it should give a list of items you want to unplug from your system. Once hit to unplug/disconnect an item, the notice of "It is now safe to unplug {nameofitem} from your computer" will appear allowing you to safely unplug the drive

I got my new Seagate 2 TB Expansion Drive and made the first image of my new laptop (running Win 10 anniversary build) using Macrium Reflect. All went well, and I closed Macrium, then attempted to eject the external drive from the notification area. I consistently got an error message saying the drive could not be ejected and until the program using it was closed. Task Manager confirmed no application was running. Device Manager could not remove the drive, either. Shutting down the computer and then removing the drive was no problem, but surely this shouldn't be necessary. Any advice would be welcome!

A:Uanble to eject cd from cd drive and also cd drive missing in my computer

First off, reboot. That should allow you to remove the CD.

If the drive is still missing, try this.

Download CDgone, right click on the downloaded file and choose Extract All, then double-click on cdgone.reg Say "Yes" to the merge question and then reboot. See if the drives have returned. You may have to re-install CD burning applications, since they're the ones that tinker with the filter setting in the registry that caused the drives to disappear.

Hi, I have a Seagate USB3 500GB Portable Expansion Drive to accommodate my Back-ups and also any files I wish to 'transport' to another PC. I would prefer to leave the device connected to my PC except when I need to transport files. Will leaving it connected do any harm; should it be removed when not in use?
The PC it is connected to is NOT permanently switched on; being 'live' only for a few hours each day when in use.
Thank you.

Hi and welcome to TSG.

My first thought would be a physical problem with the button. Optical drives don't have any drivers as such to download, they are an inbuilt driver in Windows. If it works fine via the Control Panel (right click, eject) as you say but doesn't work with the button on the machine, then I suspect the button may be broken.

Probably your easiest solution is to but a new drive, they are pretty cheap.

You are best to mount the pen drive directly into the computer (hopefully in a USB 2 connector).

The USB 1 hub that you spoke of is the problem, they just don't have enough to hold the pen drive and mouse (possibly other USB devices connected to it.
You should purchase a USB 2 powered hub.

But now if I try to right click the drive under my computer, I will get an hourglass freeze. It only happens with my CD drive, not my computer or any other drives. I have an external eSATA drive in a Nexstar case connected to one of the eSATA ports on the motherboard (Asus P9X79-LE). When I power the drive on, it is detected and the volume automounts, but when I have finished with it (I use it for backup) Windows appears to have no way to eject the volume before powering it off and removing it. The "Safely remove hardware" icon in the system tray doesn't list it as one of the devices that can be ejected, and when I right-click on the drive in Windows Explorer, there is no "Eject" option on the right-click menu as there is for a USB drive.

Is there a method to eject the volume - ie the equivalent of the Linux "umount /dev/partitionID" command, which I can use in Linux to unmount such a drive before removing it.

A:How do I eject an eSATA drive?

I use this Sync from sys internals to flush the buffer to disk and then just disconnect.

You could also eject it from disk management (type R then diskmgmt.msc then right click on the disk and remove the drive letter) or from diskpart (type diskpart on command prompt, then list disk, select disk 1 (or whatever), remove all noerr (to unmount all partitions)

You need a router that has a USB connection. Then you can connect the external storage to the network. That is only for a USB drive though. Do you have one of those passport drives with a battery?

I have a 320GB Seagate Expansion Drive which worked fine for several months, but in the last week or so the only way I could get it to register on my computer was to push the USB plug into the port on the unit very firmly. This sometimes caused the drive to work for a while, but then later ceased to work when I let go. So, I decided to tape it place very tightly. Wrong move! The whole USB port came loose from the mother board! Is it possible to have this fixed? I have a lot of stuff on the drive I don't want to lose!!!

A:USB port loose from Seagate Expansion Drive

I'm not entirely clear on what you are describing. Are you calling an external hard drive and "expansion drive" or is the "expansion drive" a drive physically mounted in a chassis? An external hard drive doesn't have a motherboard.

If the USB port came loose on an external drive enclosure adapter you could remove the drive from the present enclosure and install it in a new enclosure if the external drive is an IDE drive or a standard SATA drive.

Posting a picture may help decipher exactly what you are describing.

My Seagate Expansion drive is not being recognized on my laptop or any other computer that I have tried to put it on. It worked for a while

It is fairly new and I have about 500gb on it so far and I don't want to lose any of my data because most of it is my university files.

I don't know why this is happening and I also can't even change the drive letter, I really don't know much about computers but this forum seems to help people, hope someone can help me Please.
Thank you.

I have a perplexing problem. I have a Seagate 2TB external drive that when I plug it into my USB3 port it appears in Explorer and sometimes I can even navigate through some of its folders. However after 2-5 minutes it just disappears and a message comes up "USB Not recognized".
When I insert it into a USB2 port I cannot see anything. Whilst it is visible I can see it in my Disk Management but as soon as it disconnects itself this disappears. I have tried to format it but it does not stay connected for long enough!
I am running Windows 10. The same problem seems to also occur on a windows 8 machine.

A:Cant Eject External Hard Drive

Those are files that are part of the NTFS file system... the 'safely remove hardware' hardly works due to all indexing of files, showing you thumbnails of your pictures, and AV scanning nowadays... I know it won't give you the warm fuzzies to unplug a drive but if you are not actively moving files to the drive or specifically using something off it it... removing it is pretty safe. I try to remove safely first but if it doesn't work I'm not overly concerned.

If you want to check into it further make sure the drive is optimized for quick removal > goto device manager > then disk drives > double click on your external drive > goto the polices tab and make sure quick removal is selected.

You may also format the drive as FAT32 which comes with its own drawbacks.

I was trying to remove a USB Thumb Drive, and that's when it crashed. Also, when it booted back up after the crash, it said there was a problem with my antivirus. My antivirus is working though. If this crash pertains to a driver, please note that I installed the latest Graphics Driver and it was really buggy. So I reverted back to my old Graphics driver. I have not had a problem in a while, except for the Windows Mail app. This is the first time it has crashed in a while.

A:'This device is currently in use" when trying to eject drive set for performance

This is a problem that's been going on for a long time. Fortunately the way Windows deals with external disks means that the likelihood of actually damaging your drive is low, unlike if you were to do the same thing on a Linux machine.
I only know of one way to deal with this... it's a little complex, but for the safety of your data it might  be worth it to you.
Rather than copying it I'll just link the article here for you.
You can also open your task manager and look for programs that may be using the device and kill them manually there, though I've found that hard to succeed with in the past.

It happen more often with Laptop because they usually have Card reader.
So it makes couple drives like e:, f:, g:.
Storage device tries to install themself with the drive letter next to CDROM
c: - HD1
d: - HD2 or CDROM
e: - Mass storage device (maybe for card readers)
So your external HD tries to have the E: drive (probably a bug)

Sounds like the drive has failed as you had been getting warning signs with the I/O errors and now it has stopped working. There is a possibility that it is just the circuitry in the housing so you may be able to get it going again with a new housing. You could first test the drive by removing it from the housing and hooking it up to the internal connections of a desktop PC or by using a USB adapter.

A:unable to 'safely eject' my new external drive.

We have seen this issue many times over the years on this forum. It seems to affect some systems constantly and all systems occasionally.

My best guess is that it is due to poorly written software that starts a service or process and then does not release it or shut it down when you close the program. The system thinks the drive is still active because the process/service is still running.

The easiest is a work-around: restart the computer. Windows does a good job in closing the processes and services and "safely removing" the drive before it will shut down.

Otherwise you would need to track down the offending process or service and manually close it before you can safely remove. Complicating the matter in your case is the fact that the drive actually is still busy - otherwise you would not lose/shuffle data.

I cannot eject the drive bay of my CD drive with a pin in the hole  with the power off and I am suspicious of where the manual eject hole is. Hi guys,
The title says it all. I inadvertently yank a 32GB memory stick out of it's port while it was still transferring files. Now when I click on it, or try to do a right click-properties, Explore just hangs. The progress meter at the top loads up but never completes and eventually Explorer just crashes. And it won't show any right-click menu.
I've tried plugging it into different ports both on the hub and the computer. I even tried adding a virtual drive with Alcohol 120% thinking that if Windows is forced to rename the flash drive, it might recover. Nothing worked.
I'm not too concerned about saving the data on the drive. Mostly just want to get it working again. This is a brand new drive and this was it's maiden voyage.
Thanx for any help you can provide.

A:Can't Open Flash Drive After Improper Eject

Have you tried reformatting the flash drive?

Hi odd thing happening. I can attach my external hard drive without any problems and it works fine. When I try to safely remove using the small USB icon in the systems tray, there is nothing there - nothing at all....

Any ideas - perhaps I am missing a driver? Thanks

A:My external drive is missing when I try to remove or eject

Hi, I may be wrong but 'quick removal' may be enabled.

Try disabling it.

By opening device manager. (Start, search run and run this "devmgmt.msc") make sure you run as admin if it asks.

Find your drive in the menu. (Mine is a usb memory stick but it may apply to your drive.)

Click 'disk drives' > find your drive in the submenu (mine was a sandisk memory stick) > double click the drive > select the 'policies tab' > check better performance > click 'apply'

Reboot. See if that worked. If not sorry it's all i can suggest.

Only thing I can think of, and seen happen, is the mouse click is not properly registering. Maybe a setting in Control Panel, Mouse needs looking at?

I have dell XPS M1530 that has a DVD stuck in the slot drive. You can hear it try and eject by making the sound, but nothing comes out. I tried to eject prior to windows loading, but had no luck. What are my options. Thanks.

Hey, wondering if someone can help

Bought my new external hard drive and put a load of my files onto it with no problem at all, but today, on the second time of using it, I plugged it in and it seems to be working because the green light is on and the icon to eject is there, but its not showing in My Computer.

I've seen people saying about the Disk Management and changing the name or path.... so when I open up that window, the disk is not named, when I right click on it, everything is greyed out apart from Help and Delete Volume options.

I've tried uninstalling the drive under the Device Manager and re-installing it again. but that doesn't work either.

I have tried this on my 2 laptops, PB and HP, and it is exactly the same on both. Both run windows 7 64-bit.

Hope Someone is able to help me out a bit, Thanks Lynne.

I backed up my files on Seagate Expansion desktop drive 2 TB with Vista operating prior to upgrading to Window 8.1
When I tried to retrieve my documents and pictures into Window 8.1 very few files are there and only a few documents and they are at least a year old. I have 10 or more backups on the expansion drive.
I have search Seagate with little help. I have thought maybe I should find a Vista machine and see if the files are there.
It appears to backup with 8.1 but I have not check specifically for documents in the 8.1 back up.
Any thought on getting all my document and pictures off the external hard drive back on the 8.1?

A:Expansion Desktop Drive recover of files saved in Vista

The operating system version you used should not matter, what does matter is HOW you backed up the files. Did you simply use a file manager and drag-and-drop the files to the drive? Or did you use a backup app -- and if so, which one?

If you only did the drag-and-drop you may have to resort to data recovery apps to get the files back. One such free one is "recuva".

A:Seagate Expansion Desktop Drive 3tb responding extremely slow

Is my external dying? It takes a long time for windows to recognise it in my computer. Its starting to not show up in disk drives and disk management.

If it shows up its after a long time.

So I'm having this funny problem as of late with all my external USB HDDs. Basically, the "Safely Eject Hardware" icon no longer appears when the drives are connected, thus I am unable to safely remove it. It used to work, but somewhere along the line, it stopped showing up. I don't recall what, if any, changes were made. The HDDs are SATA drives in external enclosures (two different types).

The drives appear in the "Hard Disk Drives" section of My Computer, and not under "Devices with Removable Storage".

I've tried uninstalling the associated devices from the Device Manager (USB Mass Storage Device, and the listing under Disk Drives). Other USB Media work fine (Flash drives), just not the HDDs.

The drive works fine otherwise, I'm just worried about corrupting data during the disconnect. Basically, it's as if Windows thinks they are internal drives.

A:External USB HDDs being treated as internal drive (cannot eject)

Can't remember ever using the "Safely Remove" feature. All I have done since USB devices have come out is just pull the USB cord out.

However, if you need to see if there is a problem; check to see if for some reason that the safely remove feature is hidden. Bring up the "Property Menu" for the task bar then go to the "Notification Area," then check to see if my chance it is hidden.

If that's not the problem check back, and we'll look at other possibilities.

And, BTW "Welcome to the Seven Forums."

Hi there,

I have a SimpleTech Extenal Hard Drive connected through USB and everytime I got to eject it, I get the "Generic Volume cannot be stopped right now. Try stopping the device again later" error. This is driving me crazy! I have tried searching all over the net but I can never find anything too informative. Unlocker doesn't work properly on Windows 7, so that was a waste of time.

I am running Windows 7, 64-bit. Also, this only happens after I've transferred files to and from my external hard drive. This never happens when I've simply opened files from it, only when transferring files. However, files are not transferring when I am trying to eject it.

Please help me. I don't want to ruin my external drive, I've had to just turn it off instead of ejecting it due to no choice.

A:Computer shuts off when I press Eject button on DVD Drive

VP, I would check out the Power Supply as pressing the eject button will increase the power drain on your PS.

Just an idea.
Do you have another DVD drive to replace it with in case it is the drive not the PS?

I have a pretty new computer Windows Pro Problem Files Flash after - corrupted eject Drive -bit but I've had nothing but trouble with it I've already had the hard drive replaced due to failure at least it's still under warranty But now Flash Drive Problem - Files corrupted after eject I'm having flash Flash Drive Problem - Files corrupted after eject drive problems If I backup Flash Drive Problem - Files corrupted after eject my files to a flash drive using GoodSync everything is fine but if I Copy Paste a few files to a flash drive not for backup but just to work on those files in another computer they get corrupted I check the files after I paste them and they are OK but after ejecting the drive the right way and then trying to access the files in another computer they can't be opened It happens the most on one particular flash drive but I've also had it happen on other drives as well This problem I had when I moved a few files from my defective hard drive before sending it to HP all the rest of the files I had already backed up and they are OK but after I got it back it was OK for a while and now it's doing it again I checked the Event Log and there were no error messages related to the flash drive The only error messages there were from Windows Media Player Network sharing Services which I have now disabled I dont' know if Win Pro is a lot more buggy than Home Edition but my old laptop I had for almost years with Home Edition and never had any problems except for the DVD drive failing This one has been giving me nothing but grief It seems to work OK but there's all little glitches that drive me nuts and I wasted so much time trying to solve these little nickel-and-dime problems Even Photoshop hangs up a lot which never happened on my old laptop although that one only had gb RAM and HDD
