why does critical update v1.17 keep failing

Preferred Solution: why does critical update v1.17 keep failing

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/directdownload.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I don't know what to do the thermometer gauge represents your surface pro is getting overheated and in order to prevent heat damage to the core hardware the device/bios shuts down your device. so first we need to fix the overheating issue and then can you continue with the update.

Every time I try to update W 8 I get the error message saying the updates failed and the purple screen that says it is "reverting update". I thought it might be multiple updtaes at once cusing the problem so I tried individual updates at a time. Also disabled AV. Ran update repair. Nothing works.
This after I tried the W8 to 8.1 upgrade and it failed. So I thought I would need to make sure updates were complete. Thus the issue with updates. Ultimately I will try and install the 8.1 os after all this. Any suggestions.

A:Critical update ??

Joe,

It is only critical if you want the latest from MS. If your MSIE 5.5-sp2 is fully patched, you are fine. I do not likle the way MS has redefined "Critical" in the new Windows Update scheme.

You can manually alter the update list by clicking "remove" at the end of the section describing MSIE6.

Has anyone had any trouble with the last two critical updates for WinXP? Update 811493, Security Update and Q817287 update for Windows catolog security were both offered about a week ago. I downloaded these via auto update feature and installed them. After installing these updates, my computer acted slow when opening any program. I mean real slow. It also took twice as long to boot the computer. I did a System Restore and removed one of the updates by restoring to a point before it was installed. (the Q817287 one) and everything returned to it's snappy self. I installed the updates on my other XP computer and it acted the same way. Had to restore it the same way I did this computer. I refuse to update my third computer.

Seems to be a problem related with this hotfix. Buffer Overrun in Windows Kernel Message Handling could Lead to Elevated Privileges:Hotfix(811493) on some computers. Alot of people on Microsofts forum are reporting a slowdown or sluggishness after the update. When the update is removed the computer returns to normal.

Hi, this may be a stupid question but here it is
I went to microsoft site to download updates because i have a malware/trojan problem that is beginning to get out of hand, and when adaware removes them they come right back. Anyway, I just thought about updating IE because i cant remember the last time i did.

This is the question---how do i know what updates i have already had? and do i need to do the updates in order of the released date?

Thanks, I am at my wits end. Live in the middle of nowhere with a very slow connection 9-14 bps and do not want to waste time downloading something I already have. I know i need to do this b4 i go any farther in trying to rid theses pests from my computer.

When you go to the windows update site,
You can click the installation history. It will list what you have already downloaded and installed.

Click tools, windows update to get there.

If it lists it in the critical section, then you need to re-download and re-install to have it patched correctly.

Hi

I woke on Thursday morning last week to my machine in a constant boot loop, with a BSOD appearing over and over. I tried startup recovery and system restore, neither of which were able to make changes.

In the end, I just reinstalled Windows 7 64 bit, but am now experiencing problems like RPC servers errors (exeption from HRESULT).

I went to services.msc and could not change the recovery option in RPC to restart service. The recovery option are greyed out.

The odd thing is my windows now has a completely different look to when I first installed it.

I am not reluctant to allow windows to do an auto update, so I don't know what to do. I have no issue doing a completely fresh install, but it does seem and extreme solution.

Any help gladly accepted

Windows 7 x64 Ultimate

My wife's notebook installed 2 critical updates today.. But after the last reboot, it wouldn't boot all the way into Win7.. It stopped and said 'loading files' or something I usually don't get, then it said the computer would not start normally.. By reading the diagnostics, it said C:\CI.DLL was corrupt or missing.. I pulled the hard drive and put it in another machine and verified CI.DLL was there.. I scanned the HD with malwarebytes and found some unrelated web spiders and such, but cleaned the whold hard drive..

I put it back in, but couldn't get it to boot.. I'm now trying a system restore..

Why would a critical update do this?

A:Windows XP Critical Update

Virtual Machine is the interface that allows Internet Explorer to run Java applets.

Is the update really necessary? Frankly I don't know how serious it is and experience is teaching that many people will have problems with updates that probably never would have encountered the vulnerability they are designed to address.

My policy now is to wait and see if the exploit being addressed really does become a common threat on the web.

There have been at least 2 updates to virtual machine is the last year or so, if you haven't installed any of them (open a command prompt and enter jview to see your version number) you probably should bring yourself up to date. This update is version 3810.

By the way, in XP you should be able to reverse a bad update by doing a System Restore.

You should immediately test this one after rebooting by testing your Java at a site like this.

Yesterday I got a notice from microsoft that a critical update was ready to install. I downloaded the update after closing all other open windows. After the installation was complete it restarted the computer after which my compter would not completly boot up. I had to boot in safe-mode and do a system restore to get it working right.
Today I have the same notice so I went to the windows update page, and saw the update was there.
I didn't download it because of what happened before. So I went to my installed update history and it said it was successfully updated.
I looked at the update again and it said the update was 0 kbs. Can you tell me what happened and why now the up date says 0 kps to be installed?

Hello,

OS. Windows 98SE

Today, I have taken the plunge and installed IE 6 SP1 and critical updates associated with IE6 SP1

I have re-scanned for any more updates and there is one KB831167 which I am not sure if I should install or not. I do not really understand what it is for after reading the info. There was something about changing the registry, which I would not be happy about doing myself.

I would appreciate it if anyone knowledgeable about critical updates could tell me if it would be adviseable to download and install this critical update.

Sorry to be a pain.

Many Thanks

Cinders

Dell Inspiron 15 laptop, about 2 years old, running Win 8.0 - getting a popup that says a critical new BIOS update is available.  Is this legit?

A:Critical new BIOS update?

Usually you should not update the BIOS, because if your computer shuts down, etc then your computer will not boot at all, and its pretty hard to fix it like that

That is why you should only update BIOS if you are having problems with it (usually updates can fix issues and introduce new issues)

Help. I'm trying to help my son who has a new Dell with XP. Naturally he knew nothing about Critical Updates, etc. so we are struggling to update his computer. And from what I can see, he has the MSBlaster virus which is another story.

What I need though is how I can register him for notification from Microsoft when there is a Critical Update. I have Windows 98 and when I went to the Critical Update webpage, there was a place to register for Critical Updates. Tonight I went to the Microsoft download page and accessed the Critical Updates for him but searched the webpage and couldn't find anything about getting automatic notification of a Critical Update.

Can anyone tell me how to get this.

Thanks so much in advance.

Without the install CD, or a restore partition there is nothing anyone can do for you. You will either have to buy a new copy of windows or see if you can get a copy of Linux to see if you can at least install an OS. You could attempt contacting HP to see if you can get a copy of the OS that came with your system. Good Luck

I opened the box that gave me the error report, and clicked on the link it provided in the box below, which led me to a microsoft/tech/bulletin or something, and chose the link under the "affected systems." I guess the problem was with the updater itself. sorry to waste space!

Thanks in advance.

Welcome aboard.

Follow the tutorial Dump Files - Configure Windows to Create on BSOD, and upload your crash dumps at the next system crash.

If it an windows update, you may go to Control panel> Programs and features> View Installed updates in the left pane> Search for that particular update in the list> Right click on it and uninstall!

Many of you will remember critical update #811493 that was released by Microsoft last month and which played havoc with the performance of or crashed many computers(including mine).

The 04/16/2003 release has since been replaced with a 05/28/2003 re-release. It should appear when you run a Windows update scan.

After getting some positive input on this new re-release, I have installed it and have had NO problems. The install will update the Ntoskrnl.exe and Ntkrnlpa.exe files from 5.1.2600.1106 to 5.1.2600.1151.

What is the model type of your X230t?, ie 20F6?I find a typo error on the support page for a X230T bios...The ISO is gcuj25us.iso.The update utility is gcuj25us.exe [support page states this is 2.64, which is wrong].-> Both are version 2.65The update is marked critical due to a security exposure in 2.64.The readme, which you should read, states:Security fix addresses LEN-8324 System Management Mode (SMM) BIOS Vulnerabilityand some security fixes.==Lenovo Power Management Driver 09/07/2016 readme states:Problems fixed]Fixed Lenovo Platform Service high CPU usage issue. It shows on the support page as "normal", but flagged "critical" in system update. When a update is released to the support page, someone states normal/critical.Then the update is sent over to SU quality folks to test further, and develop "SU install wrappers" for SU to use  for the update.  For this update, SU folks set the wrapper as critical.=============Update your machine:(1)If it aint broke, dont fixit. [all readme.txt state this](2)If a BIOS update readme states security fix, you should update it.The update may fail; you could leave well enough alone, with the security exposure.(3)Power management driver.  Readme states high cpu.You could leave well enough alone, if you do not experience high cpu.Support page states normal; SU states critical.=The bottom line, read the readme.txt and decide what you decide to do with the update.  As always, take a restore point before any SU/manual update. Always run windows backup to take an image backup before any change, also known as CYA.==I would suggest an image backup monthly, before any updates from Lenovo or windows update. ie, do both  vendor updates after the backup.[This backup would cover your power management update, not your BIOS update]. Develop an update strategy for your machine. Take monthly backups of your image.DO NOT run windows update or Lenovo system update without a backup.I do not trust windows restore checkpoints.  I will full image restore first.I always update my BIOS manually.  This is a VERY CRITICAL component of your machine. I prefer the .ISO method. Why? You can see exactly what is happening. Do this in a very controlled, attentive environment; not during a rain storm.  Your BIOS is from 2013.  ==I dont know your pc expertise. As time permits, read the Hardware Maintenance Manual for your machine.  The BIOS update page is fun to read. ie, BIOS update fails.. machine wont boot. workaround: boot block recovery. YIKES!If this is scary, leave your BIOS alone or call the support center/reference a friend who can help. Note: windows backup keeps ONLY 1  image backup.  I am not fond of that. Use some other software, ie Acronis.  Note: I read you other post. The BIOS update is win7>win10.Your BIOS is probably UEFI (with a Legacy mode option).   My machine is NOT UEFI.  It is fully legacy, ie normal at that time. I asked for your machine model #; this will clarify your BIOS type.==Power management is a no brainer.  Keep a copy of your last installer.

Hello all,

The update I'm having difficulty with relates to Microsoft Security Bulletin MS04-022. I'm trying to install Microsoft's critical update KB841873 on a Windows NT 4 Workstation (SP6a, with IE6-SP1) box. When using the Windows Update site, I get the message "Could not be installed because of an unknown error" against this update. When I download the update as an executable and run it, a message box tells me "This package can only be installed on Windows NT 4.0"

I've also tried restarting the machine, but this has no effect. Please help!

Thanks in advance.

Hi all,
I got my machine up and working again. I went into regedit and removed pop3trap. I also removed Pc Cillin. I removed all Netscape programs. Machine is fast!
Problem is that I can't successfully download SP1a critical update Q329441. I also cannot download Netscape 7. I get an error referencing a problem with network errors and xpcom.xpi. Finally, per an earlier suggestion I removed eap 25 and eap 26 from the rasman registry. I don't know if this has anything to do with the problem.
Help!
Thanks,
Bobster

I have been getting this update repeatedly over the last few days.
I install it successfully and then it reappears again shortly.
I think it started with a particularly big batch of updates last Tuesday
Depending on where I look, it seems to mainly effect XP, I run W2000Pro.
As it dates from 2004, I cannot imagine what I may have done to activate it.
It cannot be that I'm the only person in this situation.
I manage to resolve a similar problem with advice (to someone else!) on these fora previously, and i am hoping for a similar outcome now.

Rsolved.
When yet another critical update began to repeat itself, I reinstalled IE6 SP1, with effect.
It didn't want to be reinstalled, but there!

Help! I used Microsoft's Windows Update tool under the start button to download critical updates for the OS(W2K Server) and browser. The download went fine but the installation keeps failing and I can't install any other way without getting an error message that another installation has been started and needs to be completed. I'm stuck in a continuous loop that I don't know how to resolve. It was installing IE6 and/or service packs for IE6 when it began to have a problem. Rebooting the machine just brings me back to a window asking me to continue with the install but it always ends in a failure.

Any solutions out there? Thanks in advance.

Went there and just downloaded the only one for my system, Critical Update for ADODB.stream (KB70669). 104KB. Thought people might miss it since its not the second Tuesday of the month. Try it. Hi, I am new here so please bare with me.

It seems that a few days ago Windows completed a "critical" update and since then when I boot the computer up I get the famous blue screen but when I start the computer in safe mode its fine but I have to restore the computer back to an earlier date. It runs fine after I've done this but when I shut the computer down and turn it back on the blue screen comes up again and I have to go through the same thing and go back to an earlier restore point.

Does anyone have any ideas on how I can fix this? Many thanks.

A:Error after a windows critical update

What does the blue screen say? Can you post it following the Blue Screen of Death (BSOD) Posting Instructions?

When my computer installed today's update and rebooted it wouldn't load.

I rebooted it in safe mode and tried everything I know how to do.. In the end I did a System Restore to before the update and now it is running fine.

Has anyone else had this problem?

A:G80 after MS Critical Update won't boot, restore, ...

I would get yourself a 16GB USB stick (MS says 8GB is enough, but I would get a 16GB), find another system that is running a Windows 10 (64-bit) version (it does not matter if it is home or Pro etc., just that it also is 64-bt) and use that system to create a Windows 10 recovery drive.  You can then boot to the USB stick and use it to repair your system, or hopefully repair you system that is. It sounds like your HD is still working or it would not have been able to see the System Restore point, so if you boot into recovery, you can do a few things to check the health of your hard drive, such as run chkdsk. etc.    This page has some good information on how to repair your system using the advanced options available while in Windows Recovery that are not available, or work as well when loading recovery off of the HD in question. Repair your computer in Windows 10https://www.winhelp.us/repair-your-computer-in-windows-10.html Good Luck,

Hey all,

What is the story about this IE patch that was released today for all versions of IE and Windows? (XP to 7.) I heard that the vulnerability applies only to IE 6 and that versions 7 and 8 are not affected because they have already been patched? Or is this patch recommended for all versions of IE?

I run IE 8 and just got the update downloaded through automatic Windows Update. I'll go ahead and install it, but I was wondering what this patches?

Is this necessary to have?

hello ,

it would benifit your system if you have it !!!

did you install .net frame work 2 ?

now if you look on the XPcd you will find the .net frame work 1 on it but you must be browsing the cd

to do this just start your pc then put the cd in after your pc has loaded

then you must select one of the options that you get / i just forgot the section that you need to select to install the net frame work from , it is faster the downloading from the internet

Critical Adobe Flash Update.

There's a critical security issue in Adobe Flash Player 10.0.32.18 and earlier.

It's important that organizations deploy these updates before the Christmas holiday reduces IT staffing. Fortunately, this patch cycle is as early as can be landing on the 8th so there's still time to test and deploy.Click to expand...

I use both a desktop and laptop both running WinXP Home Edition.
Desktop Experience: On 12/10/03 Windows Update ran automatically and notified me that a critical update was available (KB810217) which I downloaded and installed. No problem.

Laptop Experience: The first time I've had the laptop turned on in about a week was today. I dutifully ran Windows Update and got the result that no critical updates are available. I checked the update installation history and don't see the KB810217 on the laptop.

Can someone explain this?

Thanks

Hi,
Unfortunately when I go to Updates it is not showing the latest IE6 critical update (only the upgrade to IE6 SP1 and the HTML update) so I went to the MS Technet site, but when I got to the area to manually download the update the options are for Internet Explorer 6 SP1 and IE6 running WindowsXP.
I'm running straight IE6 with Windows 98se and have no idea of what update I am suppose to use. Neither of these seems to apply to my situation, but in one of the articles describing this critical cumulative update it mentions IE6 running Windows 98se.
Does anyone know what I should do?
Thank you.
Sincerely, Libra
