I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.
I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.
You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/directdownload.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)
Hi Jon, welcome to the Eight Forums.
The user profile with SID (security identifier) ending with 1001 is usually (not always) the first user account created when Windows is installed or a pre-installed Windows booted first time. In most cases this means it's your own user account.
You can check for which user account that SID belongs by giving the following command in Command Prompt:
wmic useraccount get name,sid
This example from my laptop, the first account I created when I installed Windows 8.1 was a local account called Admin which got the SID 1001:
SID ending with 500 belongs always to the built-in administrator account, SID ending with 501 to built-in Guest account, whether these two accounts are enabled and active or not. Other user accounts start from 1000.
What the above means is that you have most probably tried to remove your own account. Don't do that !

I right clicked on a file and saw a permission for Account Unknown.
It is inheriting permissions.
How do I remove it?
Not just from that file, from all of my computer.
As an extra question, how can I make my router firewall more effective? I can get on the router page on the web, but what kind of options can I choose?
(I already have Comodo on my computer).
One more question, some files on my computer has allowed "Users" full access. How can I see all of those files, and give users "read" access or non-access. (I am the only user on the computer and I am the administrator. Just worried a bit about security).
Click Orb, Right click on Computer and click Manage. Expand "Local Users & Groups" then click on Groups. On the right hand pane, go into Administrators or Users. You will see the Security Identifier (SID) from your picture above. Just remove the account. It is either an account that existed on the computer previously, or an account which belongs to a network (a corporate environment). If the computer is not connected to the corporate network then it won't be able to translate the SID to the Display Name.http://www.sevenforums.com/general-discussion/145510-account-unknown-permission-removal.html
When I booted up my Acer netbook yesterday, I saw two user icons shown on the Windows login screen instead of one. Aside from my own, the other user name was 'spcnywicl' - not a good sign.
I logged into my own account and removed the user in the 'User Accounts' section of Control Panel. Unfortunately it keeps coming back.
I ran regedit and did a search for the above username. It cropped up in
The bottom entry was
Name Type Data
URL REG_SZ file:///C:\Users\spcnywicl\Appdata\*
Any thoughts on what to do next?
I currently have Eset Smart Security 6, by the way.

Today,I made a huge mistake in changing the User Account Control Permissions for the C drive .I have a 2007 Toshiba Satellite Pro laptop. It's operating system is Windows Vista Home Basic 32 bit.Now I can't access the C drive at all.I can't make any changes to the User Account permissions.I get a box saying "Access Denied" for any attempt to change either. What can I do to restore the User Account Control permissions the way it was?
Welcome to TSG.
You can try the following:
Press and hold the Windows key + R on your keyboard.
In the Run box, type rstrui.exe and hit Enter.
Follow the on-screen instructions to restore your computer to a date before the issue(s) started.
I'm not griping this time!
I've set up a limited account on my computer, and when I was testing it out, I noticed that I was able to manipulate the settings to the anti-virus program that's installed. How do I, using my administrator account, prevent the limited account from messing with it? I've hidden as many folders as possible, but the task bar icon is still visible and I can't hide it. And I can't right-click the task bar icon and mess with the security settings that way.
The problem is more with your Internet Security software than with Vista. If you make the files for the Internet Security software inaccessible to a limited user - that software might not work properly for that user. Most Internet Security software (i.e. Norton, McAfee) allows you to install parental controls and give you the ability to control WHAT Windows users can or cannot do (including the manipulation of the software's settings).
What Internet Security Software are you using? Have you installed parental controls? Did you install the software while logged in as "Administrator"?
Let me know and I can probably offer more assistance.
I have three Windows-7 computers networked via cable (cat-5) into a router. Set up as "Work Network."

You'll have to access it with user accounts of john-pc
Good evening from Graz,
i have quite a strange problem on my personal pc since the last few days. I cannot login to my useraccount(which has a transparent picture at the logon screen since a few days).
I have just one workarround: if i login with my adminaccount and logoff, the userpicture of my privateaccount appears again and the login is possible.
What could this problem be related to?
solved it. Disabled the admin account, and removed the pw of my useraccount.
Kind a strange problem indeed, but seems to be solved.
I have Windows7 RC on my system, earlier i had windows xp SP2. Recently i noticed an unknown user account (S-1-5-21-XXXXX......) in the security tab of few of the folders/files. But this user does not show up in the local user group in the control panel. Any idea what this account is and how to remove it?
Hi, @Cooladi Actually, this issue is caused by File system ACLs(Access Control List) on the harddisk, but since the account is deleted it can't be resolved to a username. You can try to use Microsoft Utility Tool (SubInACL ) to remove them. @Joesync Maybe a software/service sets a specific user account on these pic files, after changing OS or remove this user account on the computer, they also cannot be resolved. Hope it helps.https://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/4ba78581-a1a7-46d1-8527-5fb0f663cd50/unknown-user-account?forum=w7itprosecurity

I am finding two Unknown Accounts in my User Profiles.I have a home network and wondering if that has anything to do with it. Primary computer (IBM) is not hooked up right now and is the one that is directly connected to internet. This one (DELL) is connected via hub as is laptop when used. I am also connected to a domain for work via VPN(though that will be stopping soon)and maybe that has something to do with it?I need to do a major clean out (for space) on DELL and then a backup and came across this while doing something else. All all virus defs are up to date and scans run often & regularly so all clear there (Norton SEP).thanks for thoughts, advice.
Your network has nothing to do with user profiles on a system regarding such profile entries.
I recently had a problem with mallware which was removed. See http://www.techsupportforum.com/foru...ml#post3321629
A mysterious user account (ASP.NET Machine Account) appeared on my computer. Can I just delete it?
You don't need to delete it, but you can do, this is linked to Microsoft's update ".NET Framework 1.1" - which is contains an application/code that some applications you run on your computer may need to use.
If you would like advice on how to remove this user account please don't hesitate to ask!
Hi guys fixing up my old computer for my mum and found that there was a weird account setup here. It comes up as an Administrator Account but i've got no idea where it came from???????

Your help would be appreciated
hi all... need help in knowing what's causing "unknown account" to appear in the user profiles... im an IT support of a call center where most of the desktops use winXP pro... all are connected to a domain... with this "unknown account" in the user profiles, one or some users can't login to the domain using that particular PC... error is usually "your profile can't be loaded"... the solution i have is to delete the profile of the user on that PC and the "unknown account" however it would be much better to know what's causing this so as to prevent it from reoccuring. thanks...
I use win xp sp3, bitdefender 2010, anti-virus, advanced windows care, malwarebytes, superantispyware, and ccleaner. I ran a bitdefender vulnerability scan and the results listed a user as 'IUSR_Your98555BF89E' with a strong password. This user does not appear anywhere on my computer logons or network. Is there a way to identify this user? Bit defender support thinks it is one of the anti spyware programs listed above. I only have one antivirus and I also use commodo firewall.

I ran into an interesting issue this morning. I created a new document, saving as, from a USB onto my hard drive. The Word document icon changed to a double person, unlike any others I have on my hard drive or the USB. I checked the securities tab on that specific Word doc and it is showing Account Unknown S-1-5-5-0-185474. This is new. I can't find any other files that show this unknown user. My questions are, 1) is this dangerous, 2) where did it come from, and 3) can and how do I get rid of it.
I have made no significant changes to my computer since this occurred.
This has happened to me recently also. Everytime I download a file to my desktop I adds another security account to the file, Account Unknown S-1-5-5-0-******. The stars change depending on the day I download the file. My old files do not have this, only the ones I download presently.
Would really appreciate help!
i recently received a problem where my laptop wanted me to type in the password for my account. however, i never set a password and i only noticed a few days ago that there actually was a password. i remember sending my laptop in to have the hard drive wiped, and it must have been them who set a password but made the computer bypass having to type it in when the computer starts up. i have tried starting in safe mode and trying the administrator account but it appears to have a password too. the hint for the normal user account is welcome1 which i have no idea what it would be. is there a way i can get into the computer?
Sorry TSG forum does not help with passwords

You will see "Account Unknown" for an account that is not currently available. This could be from an account you deleted that had permissions, or from an account on another computer that is not connected.
Either way, it's safe to remove any listed "Account Unknown" entries in permissions if you are sure it's for an account that will no longer need permissions for the item.

Hi Guys I recently recovered windows on my compaq presario cq using the built-in recvoery program which also made backups of my files I have reinstalled windows now and recovered my files but I have a problem A large number of my documents and files come up with quot access denied quot when trying to access them files to Unknown access blocking account user I have tried running quot take Unknown user account blocking access to files ownership quot Unknown user account blocking access to files on the folders but that has only resulted in some of the files becoming unblocked When I right click-properties- security settings on the blocked files there is a s- - - - followed by another string of numbers and a picture of the user account with a question mark which has full access as well as the administrator account If I remove this unknown user account and add my new user account the file becomes Unknown user account blocking access to files openable once again The only problem is I have thousands of files like this- I ve tried performing the operation on the folder itself but it has no effect- anyone know how to do this on a mass level Thanks in advance nbsp
Very easy fix this.
Firstly please note that taking ownership DOES not set permissions. It does exaclt as it says, it sets you as the owner. Being the owner now ALLOWS you to set permisions. After this you now set permissions as you have tried.
Go to the root of my docs. Right click the my docs folder, properties, security tab. Now click the advanced button. In here set the permissions you want and now tick the box that says "reset permissions on all subfolders" or soemthing like that. It will then go through and apply those permissions to everything so you only need to do it once.
Bonus answer for you here. The s-1-5-21 account was your old user account from your previous Vista build. This is called a SID and it is used to uniquly identify a user object. This actually is what it really is. It is the windows interface that matches this up to the username and displays it as that for you. since this SID no longer exists on your new system it can't match it to the name so it displays the SID instead!
EDIT: I forgot to add when you take ownership first you also need to take the same box "reset permission on subfolders etc..." THEN do the same on the security. if you only take ownership on my docs you will not have ownership of subfolder and wont be able to reset permissions on them

Hello I am trying to change the permission settings on my user account folder When I clicked properties and then the security tab I discovered that there is an unknown user that has full control over the folder I being paranoid and picky about my computer tried to delete this user from the list in the security tab and after the changes were applied throughout the folder I noticed some desktop shortcuts were deleted and I don't really know what else I could have messed up I tried a system restore but that didn't even touch my user folder The Account name was quot Account unknown lt some long random string gt quot There may be nothing wrong and the paths that the shortcuts followed may have been altered when I made a change to the security settings deleting the shortcuts But I still would like to know where this unknown user came from and what control it potentially had This is a private computer on a private network and contains one and only one user account I'd appreciate any user error bringing on Unknown deletion messages. account clues as to where this mysterious account came from Thanks Brad Edit Hey I mentioned an error message in the title This came up after applying deletion changes throughout the directory It just said that I should undo any changes that I may have made on accident
shortcuts havn't been deleted. They are just invisible because you don't have access.http://www.sevenforums.com/general-discussion/245054-unknown-user-account-deletion-bringing-error-messages.html

Which version of W7 is it?
It did not change the account, the normal user account is corrupted, so W7 loads a temporary account with low priveledges.

I ve had Windows for a long time and usually when I find a bug I can usually figure out a way around it or make it less annoying But now I have a slight problem that I cannot fix I guess I should start with my computer specs Dell Inspiron - purchased May came with OEM Windows Vista Home Basic later partitioned off a space for the Release Candidate of Windows after enjoying it used a registry hack to upgrade from the Ultimate RC to - 7 User Account Windows Problem the Professional RTM available Windows 7 - User Account Problem free from my college s MSDN AA account a while after that backed up everything wiped the hard drive and applied the backup of to the empty hard drive A few recovery reboots and I was back in business with no Vista Yay GB RAMIntel Core Duo processor GB hard driveNow that that s out of the way my problem is this I cannot quot Manage another account quot via the User Accounts gui I can only manage them using the command prompt net user username Yes I am an administrator I m the only user Even if I activate the Administrator account via the command prompt net user Administrator active yesand log in using it I still cannot quot Manage another account quot When I click the link nothing happens The quot Start Navigation quot click sounds and that s it I remember in Vista you could activate the Guest account add new accounts etc But for some strange reason Windows does not allow me to do that The only thing I can do on that screen is quot Change your password quot quot Remove your password quot quot Change your picture quot and quot Change User Account Control settings quot I cannot quot Change your account name quot quot Change your account type quot or quot Manage another account quot as I mentioned earlier I love Windows but this one little thing has irritated me since I got it To put you at ease I have an updated Anti-virus program Sunbelt Software run through Avanquest Fix-It Utilities Professional updated Windows and I run MalwareBytes weekly I also use Mozilla Firefox exclusively as my internet browser I found a good reason for doing this after my sister s laptop got infected with the AntiVirus System Pro quot scareware quot Kudos to MalwareBytes she now uses Firefox instead of IE even though I ve been trying to get her to switch for months now I just can t figure out what s keeping me from changing stuff via the User Accounts gui I can do it via the command prompt like I said and we all know command prompt tricks are cool but when I m testing things adding deleting dummy accounts it would be nice for this to work Even if I don t need it it just plain bugs me So can you fix my quot bleep quot -ing computer Thanks keyboardNinjahttp://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/t/280124/windows-7-user-account-problem/
Am running Windows XP SP2
One of the user accounts is acting up. It won't let us change the background or any personal settings. The whole account is acting messed up. The taskbar looks like it's from windows 95 or something and the start menu is all grey and missing sections. Also, the internet (Internet explorer 7) refuses to accept new settings and always starts up to the onetime page.
Can't delete account and make new one as the problem just moves on to the user account made before the one you are deleting!!
Any help would be appreciated =)
Did you follow the steps in this MS article?
How to copy data from a corrupted user profile to a new profile
Note: You must sign in at least once to the New Account before you can copy the old profile, as the account folder is not created until it is signed into.
After copying the files, click on the New_Username folder, then click on the folder named Old_Username's Documents. Double click the Desktop.ini file, and change the line Owner=Old_Username to Owner=New_Username
Note that you will have to redo any customizations, i.e. wallpaper, colors, Folder Options, Cursors, etc.
Desktop.ini is a hidden file but if you followed the steps in the MS article your system should be set to display it.
Make sure you DO NOT copy the 3 ntuser files -- those are the ones with the corrupt settings.
My Windows 10 laptop has several shared drives (not folders).
They are shared with Everyone, Full Control, Password-Protected sharing is off.
I can't access them from my main PC, but I can access the Users\Public folder.

Two things you can try doing:
(pulled this from here)
1. Restart your computer and hit F8 multiples times until you see a menu-like screen, if you see the Windows splash screen then repeat this step
2. Highlight and hit enter on Safe Mode with Command Prompt. Try logging in there. If it still doesn't work, then go to step17
3. If you are able to login, once a command prompt pops up, type: net user administrator password /active:yes (you can specify whatever password you want for the administrator account.)
4. If you get a message saying "The command completed successfully", then restart your computer by typing: shutdown -r
5. Boot up again pressing F8, but this time choose just Safe Mode.
6. You will be able to login as Administrator with the password you set in Step 3
7. Hit (windows logo)+R
8. Type regedit
9. Once the registry editor opens up, look for HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\ProfileList
10. In the left pane, find the one that starts with S-1-5..... and ends with .BAK; if you don't find one, skip to step 15
11. Right click it and click Rename, then change the .BAK to .BK
12. Right click the one with the same numbering but without the .BAK and add .BAK add the end
13. Right click the one that you renamed to .BK and clickRename, delete the .BK
14. Eventually, you have switched the .BAK from the end of the second entry to the first. That should probably fix your problem.
15. If you didn't find a .BAK then try this: Open Windows Explorer to C:\Users\Default\AppData\Local\Application Data
16. If you find another Application Data below the one you're on, then delete it. That should probably also fix your problem.
17. If you can't login in Safe Mode, then reboot and hit F8 until you see the menu again, then hit enter highlightingRepair Your Computer
18. Wait until all Windows Files finish loading, then hitNext when it asks keyboard language.
19. Try logging in here also, choose your user from the dropdown menu, and type the password, then jump to step 23
20. If that still doesn't work, then if you have your Windows Installation CD still, put it in and restart your computer.
21. Hit F12 until you see a menu of boot options, choose Boot from CD
22. Choose keyboard language then hit next. Find Repair Your Computer from a little below the center left.
23. Choose Open Command Prompt and type: net user administrator password /active:yes (here again you can specify a password)
24. Close the command prompt and click Restart and jump to step 5
To disable the administrator account, type this in an elevated command prompt: net user administrator /active:no

Somehow i have been changed to a standard user n now no one is an administrator.I cant download upgrades, change parental controls or even fix the time
then right click on the file and take ownership
I am using Windows 7 Home Premium
In Control Panel/User Accounts, I use my FIRST NAME on an Administrator account and log in with this name.
However, when I open Windows Explorer, my user account shows my SURNAME, which I would like to change to my first name. I have no idea why it should show my surname (unless this was in the original set up) - all the other user accounts are correct.
I do not want to create a new account and delete the present one as I would lose all my folders under my present user account.
Can you help, please?
Hope this tutorial helps
User Profile Folder - Change User Account Folder Name
Your last name is showing up because you might have entered it while installing Windows.
i can't finish the setup process. i'm trying to create a "standard" account, but when i go to create a password for it, no matter how many characters and no matter how complex (uppercase, lowercase, numbers, etc) it will absolutely not accept anything as a password (and i am copying/pasting the password from notepad, so it is being typed correctly).
i checked all the secpol 'password policies', and there don't seem to be any interfering requirements.
i attached a screenshot, if it helps.
Well, i've bought a new computer, and i'm setting up for some personal use, also made a new account for my kid, who would be using it for video game use only......
I setup the account and set it to GUEST type of account, and tested out (its not suppose to let guests to install apps right?) to see if the guest account can install programs and such.... and turns out it still can!!!!!!!!!!!
so my question is... how do i lock out the guest account from installing any programs and junks?
thanks in advance !
Don't worry about applications being installed. Unless you changed it the guest account can only affect itself. So you can easily revert every change and application install by deleting the guest's user directory. Viruses and other malware will be useless and only drive the guest account nuts, but easily fixed.http://www.sevenforums.com/system-security/165504-win7-permission-problem-guest-account.html
Tech-Spotters I have a tricky problem transfering user accounts between Windows Problem Transfer Windows Tricky XP Account/Profile User XP machines I have a friend who needs two employees to swap their computers This requires me to swap their user accounts between the machines Naturally I used Windows File amp Settings Transfer Wizard FAST I d tranfer the accounts then delete the old ones Well FAST overlayed the existing account on both machines Oops I think I figured out why Since both machines only had the one user account the default name was quot owner quot for Tricky Windows XP User Account/Profile Transfer Problem both So FAST just added to the existing quot owner Tricky Windows XP User Account/Profile Transfer Problem quot account rather than create a new one Thankfully I imaged both machines before trying it and restored them to their original state Now I m looking for a SEAMLESS method for swapping the user accounts on both machines I know I could just create new quot dummy quot accounts and copy the files and settings in it from the other machine manually but there s the chance I could mess it up I was just wondering if someone has a clever seamless method for doing this TIA -- Andy nbsp
You can't modify an existing account that way. When using "FAST", you need to create the account you need first, then the files/settings will be transferred to that.
Start over, don't creat any dummy accounts, create the accounts required (I assume they have different names?). RUn the "FAST" in the newly created accounts.

My grandmother was recently hacked and she changed all her passwords herself (yay!). However she did not write down her new local user account password for her laptop.
I tried downloading OPHCrack, I burned it as an ISO file and put it on a DVD-R(only thing I had on hand) and i changed the boot order on her BIOS menu to had the DVD drive as the first priority. It does not run....I hear the disk drive moving, or spinning but the program does not run. Are there any other options or do I have to do a complete system restore to bypass this? Also if that is what I have to do how do I do that without being in her control panel?
Hello there "hater",are you sure you downloaded the right OPHcrack version? It should be the one that is intended to be used on,not the one being used to download and be burned on.Try imgburn, never failed me to create bootable CDs or DVDs.http://www.eightforums.com/user-accounts-family-safety/40661-old-problem-new-user-forgot-local-user-account-password.html
I'm having trouble with permissions on Windows I'm using an Administrator account but I sometimes need to run programs as admin or they won't function properly e g Chrome can't access bookmarks if not run as admin start-up programs won't start automatically and I can't even change the desktop background image it's all black I sometimes need to enable access to folders or files through properties gt security tab Sometimes the permissions are revoked after a time I need to enable access again Some programs can't auto-update because they can't get permission to access certain folders or files This all started a couple of months ago As far as I remember the only unusual thing that happened before the problems started was when I removed and replaced the motherboard's CMOS battery while cleaning dust from inside the case After that I had to recover BIOS settings However the problems cropped up gradually after that not all at once Changing User Account Control settings does not help

Just got my new computer and like my old one it has been set up with Windows 7 on, yet with this one whenever I try to move a file or delete something it says admin permission needed and I have to click on continue and it lets me do it. But I have to do this every time.
How do I turn this off? As far as I knew I was an admin as I have the only account and I can seem to do things that need admin permission but I may have not.
Thanks for your time.
You have NO admin right by default, but you can get it temporay. That's why the prompt appears.
But in what folder do you delete a file and it gives the admin popup?
"my documents", "my pictures" .... all your personal folders work fine?
Suddenly, the Windows 7 doesn't allow me to access my Admin Account and showing error msg (The User Profile Service service failed to Logon). I am left with only the Guest Account with limited access.
I tried copying the cmd.exe, using Fix It Program, login through Safe Mode but all didn't work.
Would anyone help pls?
Occasionally, Windows might not read your user profile correctly, such as if your antivirus software is scanning your computer while you try to log on.
Please try restarting your computer and logging on with your user account again.
If the issue still persists, please restart in safe mode to log on with the built-in administrator account:
1. Restart your computer and hit F8 multiples times until you see a menu-like screen, if you see the Windows splash screen then repeat this step
2. Highlight and hit enter on Safe Mode with Command Prompt. Try logging in there.
3. If you are able to login, once a command prompt pops up, type: net user administrator password /active:yes (you can specify whatever password you want for the administrator
4. If you get a message saying "The command completed successfully", then restart your computer by typing: shutdown -r
5. Boot up again pressing F8, but this time choose just Safe Mode.
6. You will be able to login as Administrator with the password you set in Step 3.
Then try the following methods:
Method 1: Fix these user account profile on these computer
Method 2: Log on to Windows and copy your data to a new account
Method 3: Delete the error SID and create a new profile

Guys I have done this in the past but cannot recall how and don't want to botch.
I had hoped Windows 10 corrected the "rename user account" function but nope. I renamed a User Account due to conflict on the LAN [same name, same spelling] and sure enough, now I have two names for the account, one a slightly hidden original name, and permissions issues. To rid it, I will create an all new Administrator account, move everything over, and demolish the old.
How to do? the docs/files are easy... the settings for apps etc are not as I recall
Don't even try would be my recommendation.
Make a new Admin account and copy your documents. Set everything else up from scratch.
Most applications will store their stuff in %localappdata% but unless you have some specific app (Windows Live Mail or Outlook or something) tht you must move it would be much better not to try to move things.
If there is something specifically you want to move then ask about that - I've moved the 2 I mention above, for sure someone else has moved something else.
Generally it will be quicker (and cleaner) to start from scratch than trawl though everything hoping to make sure you moved the lot. You'll only end up missing some odd directory and it will not work.
Hello Since I bought this computer I've had issues I started by creating a user with my personal email address but then thought I wanted it for work so I deleted the Microsoft account associated Windows Account/Microsoft Issues... Account 8 User with that email and created another with Windows 8 User Account/Microsoft Account Issues... my work email However I've noticed that Windows 8 User Account/Microsoft Account Issues... some of the apps aren't working correctly and needed to use my personal email again For awhile Microsoft accounts wouldn't allow deleted accounts from coming back but it appears it's working now So now I have a Microsoft account with my personal email address but the primary user on my PC is still associated with the work Microsoft account I can't find a way to change this and it's causing problems since that email doesn't exist anymore Is there any way to change the Microsoft account that's associated Windows 8 User Account/Microsoft Account Issues... with a single user The only other thing I could think of would be to create a new user promote to admin and swap everything over manually before completely removing the user associated with my old work email I tried this but when attempting to log into the new user it says quot cannot login please visit accounts live com to fix the issue quot However whenever I go there and log into the new users account there's no instruction on what to do or any indication that there's something wrong So I need to be able to do one of two things Switch the Microsoft account associated with the primary user on this PC or Find out how to log into the new user's account without any issue Please help -Joshua

I need to add another standard user. I have one admin account and one standard user.
After adding the second standard account name and password on Control Panel
I get the confirmation that the new user can now sign in.
However,I get this famous message that the profile service cannot open.
I looked into C:users and find
First standard user
But not the newly created user account. Nor can I find it in the Registry ProfileService.
Why does Window lye to me saying the new user account is available but it did not create it?
Did you sign out of your account and then try to sign in to the new one?
The new user folder won't be created until you sign in and set up the account.

Hello My computer recently less than a day ago control File shows "Publisher: Unknown" Operation for account User started to display User Account Control prompts whenever I deleted or copied that weren't in the quot Users quot folder such User account control shows "Publisher: Unknown" for File Operation as the Program Files folder I am using an Administrator account and the User Account Control is set to notify when programs make changes to Windows User account control shows "Publisher: Unknown" for File Operation but without dimming my desktop Whenever I try to delete any type of file not in the Users folder the User Account Control prompt pops up like in the attachment I believe there is something wrong with the quot File Operation quot program because I'd imagine it would be signed by Microsoft and would automatically be elevated to Admin status so the prompt shouldn't show in the first place Clicking on quot Change when these notifications appear quot doesn't do anything but I am able to copy delete files after clicking quot yes quot I'd really appreciate help because it's getting annoying getting this prompt whenever I want to delete or copy a file and this prompt never appeared before when I was just deleting a file until a day ago I'm using Windows I'm just using a Windows RP theme Also I don't want to disable UAC since it lowers security I feel perhaps something happened to that certain registry key or keys related to it But I'm not sure EDIT I figured out that something was wrong with shell dll so I replaced it with an unmodified copy of the file from another computer and the prompt doesn't come up anymore

Hello aloktripathi, and welcome to Seven Forums.
You might see if you may be able to use the tutorial below to allow the standard user to run your elevated app without them having to enter your password or getting a UAC prompt.

Is there a fix for Unlocking AD User Account in Windows7 so I do not I have to use WindowsXP AD to unlock the User Account? Is there a fix and/or update for fixing this problem?

I have a Vista 32 system that has some corruption. Several things like the NET v2.0 framework do not work correctly and it does not do a Windows update without an error. Basically, I know some corruption must exist in the registry.
I have a new drive that I restored a backup from way back when the system was working OK. Naturally there are programs and files that need to be updated. I will have to reinstall the programs that did not exist on the old backup, but I was hoping I could restore my user account profile "in bulk" without just moving individual files. Is there anything wrong with deleting the whole content of the restored user account profile and replacing it with my present profile?
You could use Windows Easy Transfer, I will be back with more information.
You can also, just back up your files etc and then restore them to the new account.
You have to be careful with anything that you do, to be sure that the corruption is not transferred.
We are creating a PDF file in login user's local application folder (C:\Users\%username%\AppData\Local\folder1) through a custom .Net application and displaying the created pdf file in application.
The above functionality is working for users who are part of domain and added to local vista machine as users (both for administrator and standard user accounts).
The same is not working for local users (both administrator and standard user accounts created in vista box).
File is getting created for any user under their local appdata folder and can able to open from that location, but not displaying from app in case of local system users (admin or standard type).
Can anyone help me what security settings differ between domain users vs local users in vista business 32 bit OS?
Policy that is actually causing the problem (or lack thereof) is corresponds to Internet Options control panel, Connections tab, Lan Settings button: Use Automatic Configuration settings.
Having this turned on causes IE to load a configuration file prepared by IT department which makes a whole lot of configuration changes to IE, including remapping the security zones. We can test this by unchecking this option (the default state).
Since the machine is in domain and since we are testing with domain users accounts, I have monitored domain controller pushing down a bunch of policy settings which relax the IE security settings, causing the reports to display.
First, domain settings will resync over time and this checkbox will keep getting turned back on automatically. So you can?t really turn this off, it won?t stay off. I would feel better just testing local accounts, but since the computer is also a member of the domain, machine-specific policies are applied by the domain as well.
I have a user with a machine that was setup with Win 8.1 Home. The machine has been upgraded to 8.1 Pro and joined to a domain (WinSrv 2003). I need to get the conten/configuration from their old local machine user profile to their new domain user profile. I tried to copy the contents of their ../users/<name>/.. folder from the local user profile to the new domain user profile (after they had logged in once, and then logged off). This did not work. When I did the copy, I grabbed all files, including hidden...was that my mistake, or is the issue broader?
In the end....they want their old stuff and configuration under their new credentials/profile.
There are 4 conventional ways of accomplishing this task.
Option 1: Simply copy My Documents, Favorites, Desktop items from one to the other. You will have to setup program options again, may or may not be a big deal
Option 2: Use the Windows Easy Transfer option. Explained here. Vista & Win7 local to domain profile migration
Option 3: Use the Copy To Feature in User Profiles, explained here: Copy a user profile. The steps are outlined for different versions of Windows, but they work the same in Windows 8.
Option 4: Use the User State Migration Tool. User State Migration Tool 4.0 User's Guide. Here is a link to a video on using the USMT. User State Migration Tool in Windows 7 - Install | TechNet
I have a Dell XPS 9100 with Windows 7 Prof. I am using the user account made during the initial bootup of the new computer, to make the desired settings and adding software installations. However after I finish with the initial tweaking, I will reduce the account privileges from Administrator to Standard user level. However, before I change the account level, I will make another user account with administrator user level.
Is there a way to have the new user account have the same settings as the initial user account when it is Simimade, such as copying, etc? I am not looking forward to manually making all of the sames changes/settings that I have made in the initial bootup user account, to the new user account with administrator privileges.
I would very much appreciate any suggestions regarding the above. Thanks Sam
About as close as you can get to this would be to create a new administrator account with the name you like, then copy all of the contents of the old user account's C:\Users\(user-name) folders (including hidden AppData folder) into the corresponding new account's C:\Users\(user-name) folder. After everything checks out ok, you can delete the old user account while logged in the new user account.
It will copy most of your settings, like your Start Menu shortcuts, to the new account, but items stored in the registry, like your desktop background, would have to be reset again.
Hope this helps some,
how can it be?
a standar user turns the pc on, goes to her account and turns the general volume down and then turns the pc off
i go later turn the pc on , go to my account and i have the volume down too
That is how Windows seems to work. I have three users on my system, and if I adjust the volume with one, the other two are affected. I did find this: How do I keep individual user volume settings on my computer?
Maybe it will help you. I will also ask others to take a look.
So basically, somehow the permissions for my photos from my old user account have been set to an "unknown" or "default" username. So I am guessing I will have to edit this from the registry or what? I'm not sure but can someone tell me how to take ownership of an unknown account, the account reads "S-1-5...." so thats like a default account right? How do I reset all of my files to my new user account?
EDIT: BTW guys I can ADD ownership to the files one by one but I want the entire folder to have ownership under my current username, how do I do that?
Hello, you will need to access the properties of the folder holding the photos with the bad permissions, then add either your explicit account or the administrators group to the access control list, set the permissions to Full Access; alternatively you can also take ownership of that folder if that is the case:

hi you could try starting in safemode and running system restore to a point before your issue occured, try F8 on boot and choose safemodehttp://www.techsupportforum.com/forums/f217/user-account-problem-404155.html
All of a sudden my user account,"Owner", is asking for a password. I don't remember ever having assigned a password there. Also, when I try to log in under "Owner" I get a message " The User Profile service failed to the logon. User Profile cannot be loaded" I don't recall ever having established a profile for this account. I am able to log into another account but I have no data there. All my data is in the user account "Owner". I don't want to establish any more accounts because my data is all in the "Owner" account. I am able to use the internet under the other account but all my Favorites are under the "owner" account. Any ideas?
By the way, I am using Windows7.
Ok I have a computer with XP home on it and only one user account which happens to not be an administrator account. My sister gave me the computer to fix she complained that she couldnt do anything which required administrative rights to do. The problem is there's only one account on the comp which is a limited user. I don't see an option anywhere to make a new username. Is there any way to make a new name with administrative rights? Thanks in advance!
XP has a default built in Administrator Account if you log on in safemode.

I recently purchases a new laptop for a end-user. Under user accounts I see the users log in listed twice once to the domain and once to the local computer. When I log in as this user I can't get to the internet work network or log off and everything hangs. When I log in as myself or administrator I can do all of the above with no problems.
Okay there are two things going on here First off I never used to have to click an icon at the welc ome screen or anything and now I do I read how to fix that but now when it skips the welcome icon screen it goes to some generic administrator account not the one I made Secondly when shutting down the graphics are different It's Problem User Account XP no longer the icons for shutdown restart and whatever it's an old school looking window with a drop down menu I'm pretty sure XP User Account Problem installing Cinema d also installed the asp net thingy which started making trouble with the log-on but I'm just confused and can't figure out how to fix it I just want to turn my computer XP User Account Problem on it automatically start-up windows under my user account and be done with it And the shutdown thing is just stupid I have no idea why it changed from the simple icons to the older looking drop down menu User Accounts say my created account is an administrator but I don't see the other administrator so I can delete it or something I'm pretty sure I just need my one created account to exist by itself so it picks mine Just an annoying problem Any ideas solutions

I'm running XP Home and I have 4 users. All users are administrator accounts.3 of them are fine but on the other account I cant even change my background wallpaper.most programs work but some refuse to.what could cause this.
Looks like a corrupt profile.
Login under a different Admin account, move any personal files for that profile into a folder on the C Drive, then delete the profile and have the user log back in.
If that doesn't work, try removing the user and then re-creating a new login!

My laptop is Dell Inspiron 14R and use windows 7 ultimate 64 bit. I was trying to download itunes but it showed failure and did not respond. Then, I used task manager to close the window. Then, I restart the computer. Now, I see many of my desktop icons missing and also my documents missing. However, those documents are availble in a folder called Uses\Dell folder in C drive. Apart from these problems, the fonts of the internet explorer has changed and its like using a new computer where I have to install programs again. Please help.
Were you able to completely download and install itunes?
try performing a system restore to reset it first
I've just bought a new computer and it was set up to have 2 users, Mike and Dad. We didn't need the 'dad' account so I deleted it. However, if I go to C:/Documents and Settings you still find 'Mike', 'Dad' and 'all users'. If you try and delete 'dad' it doesn't let you, and if you try and change the name it won't let you either. Is there anyway of getting rid of this user? Under 'User Acounts' in control panel 'Mike' is the only user...
Can anyone help?
Is dad an administrator account ?If so try logging in as administrator in safe mode and delete the account there.

I am trying to create a new standard user account under Windows 7 64 bit system. Logged in as administrator and have produced 3 other standard user accounts in the past using the straightforward control panel process. This time I get the following error message when trying to logon to the new account -
"The user profile service failed the logon.
User Profile Cannot be loaded"
Didn't need to do anything about user profiles in the past.
Any help greatly appreciated.

Hi all I was trying to secure some of my files on a shared computer and created a new user account with administrator privileges and named it quot Daniel quot After moving my files to this account I discovered that these files could Problem User Account still be accessed by the other account named quot bennett quot also an administrator account I logged back onto quot Daniel quot and under the Users folder right clicked quot Daniel quot clicked Properties User Account Problem clicked Security and clicked Advanced I denied access to this folder to quot bennett quot but after logging back on to quot bennett quot and clicking the quot quot Daniel quot folder under Users it told me I did not have access to that folder but to gain access just click continue I did so and was able to access the account I logged back on to quot Daniel quot and further denied access to Administrator bennett-pc or something with a similar title After doing this I was not able to gain access to any of my files even when logged onto Daniel However I right clicked and restored access to this folder to quot Daniel quot it told me it did not have an owner and that I could claim ownership of it but that did not immediately give me access to the file folders contained within it I have to right click and do the same to gain access to them I don't mind having to go through and take ownership of all these folders manually but the problem I'm having is I still cannot open the files within these folders If I try to restore access to them or take ownership it adds a small lock symbol to their icons and when I try to open them it tells me access its denied This is turning out to be a big problem for me so any help you could give me would be greatly appreciated Thanks

I logged back onto "Daniel" and under the Users folder right clicked "Daniel", clicked Properties, clicked Security, and clicked Advanced. I denied access to this folder to "bennett", but after logging back on to "bennett" and clicking the ""Daniel" folder under Users, it told me I did not have access to that folder, but to gain access just click continue. I did so and was able to access the account. I logged back on to "Daniel" and further denied access to Administrator(bennett-pc) or something with a similar title. After doing this I was not able to gain access to any of my files even when logged onto Daniel.
However, I right clicked and restored access to this folder to "Daniel" (it told me it did not have an owner and that I could claim ownership of it) but that did not immediately give me access to the file folders contained within it. I have to right click and do the same to gain access to them. I don't mind having to go through and take ownership of all these folders manually, but the problem I'm having is I still cannot open the files within these folders. If I try to restore access to them (or take ownership), it adds a small lock symbol to their icons and when I try to open them it tells me access its denied.
This is turning out to be a big problem for me so any help you could give me would be greatly appreciated! Thanks.
Your problem is that an administrator cant deny another administrator access. If you want daniel secure the only way is to remove bennet from Admin or securing the folder with a 3rd party password app.
When we logon to our company's User account on our Windows XP computer, it gives me an error stating that it is unable to locate certain files, it is logging me on as a Guest, gives me about a 20 second countdown, and it says any settings or changes will not be saved. This occurred after the boss's son screwed around in the computer and hid some files and deleted or moved other files in an attempt to cover his tracks. Hello JasonL, welcome to Seven Forums!
First off I would not use ant acct with Admin in the name at all, too many possible conflicts.
To get aquainted, have a look at the tutorial at the link below and the "related tutorials" listed at the end of the tutorial.

I got this problem my desktop icons/startups went missing
but when i check on the Users folder i can see them[desktop icons]
all my auto start are gone.. ex. anti virus, ym, msn, etc etc
its like that i have a new user account..
thanks for the help
Important things first. Changes like this do not happen. It can be a major problem
Run a full anti virus scan
Download and run malwarebytes. Full scan and update it first
If these are negative, try a system restore.
But be sure, we do not want a virus to sperad to restore points..
I'm experiencing a couple issues XP User Problem? Account in XP Media Center that I believe are related and somehow connected to Windows user accounts I had XP User Account Problem? one main user account set up for years password protected and at times XP User Account Problem? I had a guest limited account for my kids More recently I changed the password on my account I now have one more recently installed application I don't think it matters too much but fwiw it's Ring Central Call Controller I use for my work that will not launch unless I right-click and select open as and have the drop down box on administrator and enter my password The curious thing is that it doesn't accept my new password only my old password And I am the main user on this computer and have full admin rights so I don't get why I am having to start an app this way anyways- my other apps seem to be fine If I just double click on the RCCC app exe to try to launch it normally I get no error message or nothing just nothing happens failure to launch Now the other problem that I think is related to this all is that when and only when I have had this Call Controller app open even if I exit it before shutting down windows I invariably get popups when I shut down windows First an end program task mgr box pops up for explorer exe process and then after that an end program box pops up for power meter which is strange as my PC is a desktop not a notebook and these end task boxes will not automatically shut down those processes if I let their progress meters complete- either one will freeze the shutdown process If I just click shutdown and walk away the next morning my computer's still on But if I click the end now button on both of these warnings shutdown will complete Is there a proper safe way to delete all user accounts and reset it all to start again from scratch Or might it be that I need something a little more drastic to purge the registry Any other suggestions
Reset your Ring Central password to coincide with your XP one.

when you get alot of spyware, and then remove it....alot of your xp system files will be corrupt.......alot of incompatibilities, lost files, errors.
I reccomend just a clean reformat if you want to fix it all.
do a search for boot.ini and download the original file and place it there.
I am hoping someone here can help.
I have a desktop running windows 7 and I have set up 3 user accounts - mine the main one as administrator, my son & guest.
When I try to launch the main one, I get the cmd box up and cannot exit it - when I put in the command exit it just goes to a black screen and stays there.
Yet I can go on as a guest and all seems to work fine, but obviuosly I need to access my user account because its got all sorts of stuff on there I cannot access as a guest.
By the way up until a few days ago my main user account worked just fine - I have also tried a system restore but that has not made any difference
Can anyone offer any help please?

Hi I'm new to the forums and I see that this is the only place where I can find help problem account User I've recently began to encounter rather nasty problems on my laptop which is really important to me cause I'm a college student and a lot of my homework is done on the laptop The thing is that my user account created some kind of a mess I only made one account on xp for me and I decided to make a password for it also After the xp loading message I would receive the message that the system could not sign me in and that I need to write the User account problem password roughly translated because the system is in croatian It was ok i just wrote the password and got in Anyway after some time the system asked me for the password again but this time this message appeared briefly and disappeared suddenly leaving me with the screen that only said Windows is starting and it seems like at this point it crashes I tried to fix the problem and accidentally deleted this account but before that i created another account without the password Now I'm working on this new account However the problem of the message appearing briefly and then disappearing still remains even though I deleted my old account Sometimes it crashes sometimes it loads and I can work normally like this one the system didn't crash I was lucky enough What should I do about this problem I'm a student and it really is important for the sake of my school performance to solve this problem Any suggestions Thanks
Right click My Computer, Properties, Hardware, Device Manager. Locate
the entries for your hard disks and double click each entry. On the
Policies tab, uncheck Enable write caching.
You will see a performance decrease because of this, but if the
corrupt registry/user profiles problems cease, then you'll be certain
of the cause.
Logon to another account with admin privilege and run System Restore.
Choose the most recent restore point and SR should restore the user
Boot into safe mode and log in as Administrator. Copy ntuser.dat from
%windir%\repair to "Documents and Settings\[your user id]". Now do a
system restore to a point in time prior to when the corruption message
began to appear.
Look in HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows
NT\CurrentVersion\ProfileList and find the profile you want to change
then change ProfileImagePath to the ntuser.dat folder that you want to
You must manually copy or move the ntuser.dat file there.

When any user account logs off most of the time the following window appears:
program "hv4tK3y7d9DD89Cr1Je1w24+defaultCFG+DesktopSearchEngine" not responding, click "end now" or "cancel" . Clicking either of these options allows the logoff to complete.
You can logon and then logoff without doing anything and there is no problem, but using IE or AOL etc the problem is generated, but you don't know it until you attempt to logoff.
I have run various virus and adware/spyware programs and nothing is found, so it looks like the system is clean right now.
Thanks for any suggestions.
thanks for answering anyone. but here is the problem. when i set up my windows install it created me an admin account. i went to create another account for my brother and it said i needed to create another admin account. so i did and it deleted my other account and all my unshared files!!! please help. also the system restore is not working. it keeps telling me that it can't back it up. please help.....
No it didn't really delete the other account. I suspect you used the Administrator account to start with which should not be used exactly for this reason as once a second Admin account is created, the Administrator Account can only be accessed from Safe Mode. My advice is create another Admin user in your name now.
I have a Windows7 home premium Toshiba laptop (SP 1) that I recently acquired from a used laptop shop. I requested that an administrator user account with a password and a Guest User account be set up so that our kids can use the guest account without downloading anything from the internet.
The problem is that our Administrator account has an internet connection and access, but not so on the Guest. The laptop shop guy is not familiar with how the guest account works (????) so I am on my own, unless someone here can help.
I can connect with our home internet system using the Administrator account then switch user to the guest account and attempt to browse (firefox), but it says my machine is not connected to a server, even though less than a minute earlier on the Administrator account, I was connected.
Can someone give me any direction on this to resolve?
Log into your administrator account and go to Control Panel/User Accounts create a new Standard users account, set the Parental Controls for this account. Test the account by logging out and logging into the new account.http://www.techsupportforum.com/forums/f217/guest-user-account-problem-1018738.html

Have you tried a System Restore back to a point before this problem first appeared.
When you go to START have you double clicked on the Account picture and tried to change the Accont picture?
You could also try running SFC:
