Outlook contacts vs. address book and people

Q: Outlook contacts vs. address book and people

OK I'm confused. I finally managed to import all my contacts from roadrunner and Live to Outlook, but the contacts appear under PEOPLE. How do I get them to the address book so that when I click TO: to send an email the contacts appear?????

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/directdownload.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

People in Outlook 2013 is the old Contacts. When you create new email and click To, the list will appear.

I opened my address book up and edited it (adding and deleting anyone I wanted/didn't want). I then closed the address book, and went into outlook and clicked on Contacts. It still shows everything I just deleted, and doesn't show anything new.

I was under the impression the Address Book and Contacts were the same thing. Apprarently not! Anyway, I selected all my contacts, and deleted them. Now my contacts are empty, but my address book is full and what I would like to use. How do I get all those "contacts" from my address book into the Contacts folder within Outlook so when I'm composing an email, I can hit on the New email, then to the TO..(to bring up my contacts)

Can anybody help me. i have a new machine and intend using mozilla thunderbird rather than MS outlook.
Is there a way I can copy contacts from old machine and install in Thunderbird?

A:Outlook address book/contacts

Thunderbird can import messages and contacts from Outlook, that's for sure, but I can't find out what format the data must be in for importing. If you export your "Contacts" folder with Outlook's "Import & Export" tool, that will create a PST file which contains all your contact data.

If Thunderbird can import PST files you're good to go. If it can't, your Outlook "Contacts" folder can instead be exported as a 'Comma Separated Values (Windows)' file (CSV) which can be imported into most popular Windows email clients.

Export both formats at same time and I'm sure one of them will be okay for importing into Thunderbird.
I do know it will import Outlook data (I just checked their website) but I've never actually used it to know which file-types it can import.

Outlook 2003 - XP...

I can't figure out why my Address Book and Contacts are different.
I'd like to update my Contacts to be the same as my Address Book, which is where my Outlook goes to address my mail.
I need to export my Contacts to import into my new Mac.
I can't see any way to export the Address book, or even save it to a PAB file, although I must have done it sometime ago when I first set up this system.
I do understand the Contacts is contained as a folder in my PST file.
But where does the Address Book file live and how do I use it to update my Contacts?
Am I crazy?
Thanks,
Ron

I have all my contacts including postal address and email addresses stored in outlook 2010 as contacts it syncs to my iPhone and generally it works very well.

But when I want to send an email to one of these contacts I start the new email and go to the outlook address book but then if this is a recent contact that I have not emailed before.

I have to add the email address into the outlook address book as a new contact.

Then outlook asks me if I want to update the person in the contact list, clicking yes adds the email address to the contact list.

But why do I have to add the email address into the address book why does it not retrieve the email address from the contact list

So is it possible to add all my contact emails addresses into the address book without having to do them one by one.

A:What is difference between address book and contacts in outlook

Address Book was actually Windows Address Book that came with WinXP and was used by Outlook Express. Contacts in Outlook could be used to import from WAB. The Contacts in Win7 is located in C:\Users\YourLogin\Contacts appears to be separate from Outlook's Contacts which are stored along with messages, settings, etc., in Outlook's .pst file.

How do I save my Outlook Address Book (all Contacts) so I can take it from one computer (my desktop) and install it in another computer (my laptop)?

Have you ever actually done this yourself? The reason I ask is because the standard Microsoft Help and Support steps are not right.

Once again, I use Outlook 2003, not Outlook Express.

Hello,
I recently got a new computer and transfered all my pst files over to the new outlook. I have all my contacts listed in the contact folder, but for some reason they are not showing up in my address book. I had this problem in the past a little over a year ago, and remember that a friend came and did a simple click..click and mad my contacts visible in the address book, but I can't for the life of me figure out what he did and he is not available to ask. Anyone know how to get my contacts to appear in the address book. I seem to remember him doing something with properties somewhere, but I have searched all over and can't figure it out. Hi Donjar,
It sounds like your contacts folder is not listed as an Outlook Address Book. Right-click your contacts folder and go to Properties and then the Outlook Address Book tab. Check the box for "show this folder as an email address book". Hope that helps.

Missing functionallity in 'Windows Mail' Contacts that was in Outlook Express 'address book'

I've just moved over from XP with Outlook Express 6 to Vista Ultimate using Windows Mail.
I've migrated my old XP Address Book into Windows Mail Contacts and my 50+ Contact Groups (my mailout lists) are visible BUT when I browse an individual contact there is no field that tells me which of my Contact Groups this person is in? In Address Book there was a field there.
I need this info for maintaining my mailout list. At the moment I can't tell if a person's email address is already on my mail out list unless I check each of the 50+ Contact Groups individually which can't be right!!!
Am I missing something - is this info there somewhere?

When I want to send a new email, I click on "new" and then click again on the "to" field and my address book then pops up with all my contacts.

The problem is that not only does it show their email address but also all their phone and fax numbers as a separate item e.g. a contact who has an email, phone and fax will be listed three times

This really clogs up the address book as obviously I can't send an email to a phone or fax number but if I try to say delete the fax number it deletes the entire contact in the process!

Is there any way I can make the address book show ONLY the email addresses and not all the other garbage?

It may never be exact. As I remember from switching from WAB/OE to Windows Mail in Vista back in 2007, the WM (new) style displayed the names as last, first after I was used to first last from OE. I believe WLM is closer to WM than OE, but there are some known differences in that not all the detail carried by the older programs is brought to WLM. I would guess your best bet is to use the WAB export/import since it's meant for OE. Then check each contact for errors and get ready to see some info missing and displayed differently.

Address Book was listed in the Start Menu with my addresses, so I used this until it disappeared completely after a few months of use. That day I looked for Windows Contacts
and it could not be opened even though it was shown as one of the programs on my computer.

I am not able to find any addresses in either Vista's Contacts or the previously used Address Book.

Can anyone help?

Hi

I'm using XP & outlook 2002 sp3.

I have both contacts folder and address book - first question is I'm not sure thats the way its supposed to be?

Main issue is I have different entries in them - some of my contacts are not in address book, and the other way round. Can't really figure out how this came about - but can they be synchronised? Or better, can I get rid of one and have the other do both jobs?

Thanks

I gave up on Vista and went back to Windows XP OS. I saved the Vista Outlook Express Contact List, but can't import that into XP Outlook Express as an Address Book (a .wab file) I presume that the two use different formats.

Does anyone know how to overcome this problem, so that I can avoid building an XP OE Address list by hand?

Thanks in advance.

A:Getting Vista OE Contacts into XP Address Book format

There is NO Outlook Express in Vista it is "Windows Mail".

You need to export them to a csv type of file from the Windows mail program. Then this file can be imported in to Outlook Express.

Why can I not sync my Global Address Book? When I add info via active directory, it updates in the GAB, not in the contact list, and the contact list is what shows on the phone....and is what we need to update as we add info!!!!! Why isn't this possible? That isn't "syncing" that is just refreshing what is already there! We have around 500 employees, and having to log into each of there emails and add new contacts manually is NOT ok.

How do I sync my droid with exchange's GAB? Like I said, I can copy all of the GAB to contacts, but that doesn't do anything? It doesn't update in there when you add or change information....Pleas, please, please, tell me I am crazy and just missing one little thing, because if not, this exchange is worthless.

1. Need to " un-hide " operating system files " and also " show hidden files "......

Start > search box, type folder options > Enter > View tab at top > ....
put a blue radio dot at " Show hidden files, folders and drives ", and
un-check " Hide protected operaring system files " > OK

2. Here is where you will find WLM contacts
C:\Users\UserName\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows Live Contacts\{ a string of letters and numbers }\DBStore
Inside the DBStore there is the Contacts.edb. \that's where you contacts are.

One problem I have : I can't open the contacts.edb. I used Adobe Reader, Internet Explorer, Notepad, Wordpad.... none are able to open it.

3. For WLM messages

Hi Everyone

I'm using Office 2007, and have just transferred my data to a new computer.
When I come to address an email however, the address list is empty, although my contact lists are showing within 'Conacts'.

If I go to Contacts Properties 'Contacts' is grayed out under 'Name of the address book', and I cannot tick the box 'Show this folder as an e-mail address book'.

Can anyone shed some light on how I can reslove this please?

I exported my address book from Outook 2003 into the Windows (XP) Address Book. This is great because then I don't have to have Outlook open to view my address book.

However, it isn't linked to my Outlook address book so that whenever I made a change to my addresses in Outlook, it'll reflect in the Windows address book.

I had that set up perfectly in my old computer (Windows 98SE) but can't get it to work in XP.

Any tips or ideas?

Hi,
I've a Windows 7 contacts folder located here: C:\Users\Richard\Contacts
But it is not the same as my Live Mail address book.

My Live Mail Address book has new contacts in it.

1) How do I update the Windows 7 contacts folder?

2) And what is the point of the Windows 7 contacts folder if it doesn't stay in sync with the Live Mail address book?

Regards Richard

A:Windows 7 Contacts Folder and Live Mail Address Book Not in Sync?

The Contacts folder is left over from Window Vista and if you were to go to the trouble of "reinstating" Windows Mail (the previous mail version that came only with Vista) then it would use the Contacts folder. If you have downloaded and installed WLM (a component of Windows Live Essentials) it has its own contacts database within the <user>/appdata folder tree. You can access this database only through the WLM program (and the website contacts.live.com if you sign-in since that site mirrors your "signed-in" contacts list). If you don't sign-in then you are viewing your "not-signed-in" contacts list in WLM which is also located in the appdata folder tree. If you have placed any contacts in the old Username/Contacts folder, you can import them into WLM.

There is a contacts.edb file in there. So I would say richc46's answer will be best. A Guy

Is ther any way of doing a mass update to change the way Outlook displays email addresses.

In Outlook, you can define the way NEW contacts are displayed (First Name/Last Name or Last name/First Name) through Tools/Options/Contacts/Contact Options).

The issue is that the default was set to Last Name/First Name. Now the user want to change all of his contact displays to First Name/Last Name.

So far we've change the default for NEW contacts to be First Name/Last Name... now how can I change the existing contacts with out going through each individual one and changing the display individually.

I have over 13 years of Outlook Express folders and addresses that I desperately need to convert to Outlook 2007. I should have imported them into Outlook before I made the "Easy File Transfer" to the new Win 7 machine, but didn't know I needed to do that. Several years ago I had imported the files into Outlook, although that data did transfer it is now way out-of-date and full of duplicates.

The up-to-date data is still in my old machine and also in an external hard drive backup. I have isolated the Outlook Express personal folders into .dbx format and the addresses into .wab format.

Is there a way this can be reformatted into Outlook? Or is there some other way? I would probably also need to delete what is already in Outlook first, or I would have many more duplicates.

I welcome any suggestions.

A possible solution. . .

I transfer an updated address book on a weekly basis from an AS/400 to Outlook97 on a pc.

I realise you are coming from a different starting point, but the first few steps may be relevant.

1) The AS/400 address book file is downloaded to a pc as an Excel file.
2) On the file menu of Outlook97 click on the option for Import and Export.
3) The list on the next screen (Import and Export Wizard)defaults to "Import from Schedule+ or another program or file". Accept the default and click Next.
4) On the next screen (Import a File) I click on "Microsoft Excel", but if you scroll down you will see that there is an item in the list for "Personal Address Book". That item might work for you.

When I send an e-mail through Outlook and go to "To" to select the names of the people I want to receive it then it shows all the names of people/businesses in my Contacts many of whom don't have e-mail addresses. It would be much easier if it showed just those names that have an e-mail address. Is that possible? Click "Next". Do you see an existing Address book?
If not, click "Add" then select "Additional Address Books" then Click "Next".

Hello Squelch & welcome to our Forum.

A:outlook 97 can't add to address book

What operating system? What happens when you try to add a contact? Do you get an error message? If so, what exactly does it say?

I recently purchased a new computer loaded with Windows XP Pro and Office XP and I imported my outlook pst file into Outlook XP from my old Outlook 98 program.
In Outlook XP, a separate line/ entry is shown for each email address and fax number of a contact. Previous versions of Outlook allowed you to identify a default email address; and fax numbers were not included.

Is there some way to change the view in the XP Address Book to show only a chosen default email address??

My Windows 7 laptop crashed but before it did I copied my Microsoft Office 7 outlook mail Address Book into my Documents. Bought a new Windows 8 laptop & installed a new Office 7 outlook in it. I got a computer store to copy what they could off the old computer hard drive. I opened what they retrieved and the old address book is in a Microsoft Excel .csv file. Is there a way I can move it to my new outlook 7 address book? I could copy/paste them one at a time but was hoping there was a better way. Thanks in advance, Roy

I have always used Outlook Express for E Mail. I got Office 2003 which included Outlook, and now I'm using Outlook. I used to have all my Address Book contacts divided into several categories. In Outlook Express that was easy. In Outlook I'm totally stumped. How do you do this?

Hi, I have Outlook.com on my XP comp, I wanted to transfer it onto another comp.running XP, all the suggested methods do not seem to work (unlike Outlook Exp).  I have now downloaded a fresh Outlook.com onto the second XP but I cannot get the address book to sit in the correct place on the Outlook page of the second PC.  It now sits in Excel on the second PC, does anyone know how I can move the address book from Excel into the Outlook address area on this second comp. I have tried most of the Microsoft suggested methods but it just does not happen. many thanks, Roy

I don't know how this happened. I have my gmail account and an outlook account in the win 10 "People." The app has multiple copies of the contacts sometimes more than just 2. I'd like to remove all the contacts and accounts and start fresh. I cant find how to do that. Also removing a single contact requires a one by one removal of linked contacts. I don't know how thy got linked, but I should be able to select them all for removal in one step.

What am I missing?

I use Outlook XP and want to back up my address book. Where is it stored on the C drive?

I have been using Outlook 2003 to manage contacts but I do not use it for email and therefore it is not my default email program. I can access the Outlook Contacts from Word (like for printing envelopes) with no trouble in my old XP computer. I have a new computer with 64 bit Vista, and when I try to use contacts in Word, I get the message to make Outlook my default email program. This works fine however, when I return the default to Eudora, I cannot use contacts and get the same message. As above, this setup works fine on the XP system. Any ideas??

I recently installed a new hard drive, but first made a backup of my Outlook PST file to reimport all my mail and contacts. Everything seems to be working fine with the exception of the address book icon on top. When I click on it, it lists two different contact folders. When I click on the first, contact folder, I get the following message: "The addressess list could not be displayed. The Contacts folder associated with this address list could not be opened. It may have been moved or deleted or you do not have permissions." I've tried deleting the first contacts folder, but it won't delete. The second Contacts list folder does contain my contacts. Do you think it is some kind of identity or permission problem? Any suggestions.

A:Outlook 2003 Address Book

Hi LindaR0923

Right click each of the Contacts folders in Outlook:
Properties > Outlook Address Book tab
Place a check mark in: Show this folder as an e-mail Address Book
Apply, OK to save and close.

Repeat for each additional Contacts folder.
After completing the above steps, open the Outlook Address Book:
Tools > Options
Click the drop down arrow for: Show this address list first: and select the Contacts folder you want to appear when the Outlook Address Book is opened.

__________________________________________________________________________

If for some reason the above does not solve the problem, you may need to remove the Outlook Address Book and reinstall it.
In Outlook 2003 (with the Address Book closed):
Tools > E-mail Accounts > View or change existing directories or address books > Next
Highlight each Address Book listed, one at a time and click the: Remove button.
Yes > Finish button.

Close and restart Outlook 2003, then add back the Outlook Address Book.
Tools > E-mail Accounts > Add a new directory or address book > Next
Select: Additional Address Books
Next
Highlight: Outlook Address Book
Next > OK

Close and restart Outlook 2003.

You may need to repeat these steps:
Right click each of the Contacts folders in Outlook:
Properties > Outlook Address Book tab
Place a check mark in: Show this folder as an e-mail Address Book
Apply, OK to save and close.

Repeat for each additional Contacts folder.

I have a distribution list built in Outlook for sending emails to multiple parties. Today, I wanted to send an email to only select members of that list...not all included in there. I just tried to do this by selecting individual addresses by clicking with control, then I hit the email button at the top of the Outlook page. When I do so, it opens a new email but it plugs in the entire distribuiton list. Is there any way around that?

A:Outlook Address Book Problem

The only (still painful) way I know of, it to select the Contact group. In the TO: list, expand the Group and delete the individuals yoy do not want to receive. On the bright side, the remaining people can be copied and a new more limited Contact Group created if needed.

I recently had a corrupt Windows XP requiring me to install a new hard drive and re-install Windows XP. I have managed to copy over my settings except that I am having trouble locating my Outlook address book. I have searched the .WAB, Address book, .CSV, looked under the Windows directory for applications data, program files, My document without success. The options in Outlook only allow me to connect to another computer or transfer data via backup files. I am not able to open the old address book to obtain the backup. I have tried rebooting with a boot up disk and designating the old hard drive as master. Nothing has worked. Currently, the old drive is set up as a slave hard drive. Any new suggestions...anyone?

A:Outlook Address book transfer

Look for a .PAB (personal address book) file, but most of the email and contacts info will be in your .PST file.

You don't mention which Outlook version you are running.

How can I eliminate this duplication and suppress the 2nd. email account? go to mail app, account settings for that email account and look for the section where it says shows contacts - untick that box

My old Gateway desktop screen died, so I bought a new Dell. The Gateway screen cable is not compatible with my Dell. I have a transfer cable for Windows 7 and I had Carbonite on the Gateway and have it on the Dell, so the .map file is probably there somewhere. The problem I have is that I was running Outlook 2003 on the old computer and I am running Office 2007 on my new computer, but it didn't have Outlook. I bought- Outlook 2010 but it won't let me import the old file. I really need my address book. Help!

Is there a way to export AOL's Address book to Outlook? I figured it would be an easy find but I was wrong. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

A:Exporting Aol Address Book to Outlook

The only way I've found is very awkward, indeed, unless you tried a java script. It does not appear that AOL has provided an export, likely for obviously but unfortunate reasons.
This export tip will give you only the email addresses and no other information you might have saved. It can be done with Groups. If you have Individuals not in Groups, first use the Groups THEN the next step:
(Based on a right-handed mouse
AOL 8.0 (or 9.0 BETA)
(1) Click Write as though to write/compose a new email. Leave open.
(2) Click on Address Book icon

Put cursor in Address Book Window.
With Mouse, click Select ALL
(Or while holding Shift Key down,
select individuals and/or groups)
Then click to choose SEND TO
Follow instructions to Send To which places addresses
in the Send To Window of the email being composed.

With Mouse cursor, In the email SEND TO window,
right click to select ALL.
right click to select CUT.
With Mouse cursor, In the email Compose/Write menu,
right click to PASTE.

From AOL Tool Bar:
Click: File
Save As
choose a directory/folder on your harddrive,
and choose a filename (i.e. AOL_AdrBk.HTML) with HTML or TXT extension.

Then save it.

If you use the HTML extension, you can open an Excel Spreadsheet with:
File Open AOL_AdrBk (Excel opens HTML as though it's an XLS file.)

From Excel, you can export to CSV format, or choose a format depending on whichever Excel version you might have.

Tedious? Yeah. But not as tedious as re-typing everything.

I don't keep detailed information on any internet provider (AOL, Yahoo, Comcast, etc., etc.) email address book without having it in a personal database or spreadsheet that will export to popular formats.

There are a couple different ways you can do the above, all are relatively tedious. If you have separate Mail GROUPS, you can do the above with each group OR...
Per GROUP:
In the Address Book, click on a Group, say, RESCUEDOGS.
Click on RESCUEDOGS and the names appear in the bottom window of the address book.
Place mouse cursor in bottom window.
Right click then select SELECT ALL
All names should be HIGHLIGHTED.
Then left double-click. Notepad will come up with
all the selected names inserted.
Then do your File Save As (which will now limit you to TXT).

Good luck.
