New router slow down speed

Q: New router slow down speed

Hello,
recently my old router died, so I bought the new one. I connected it to my PC, entered my ISP information. It's working, but kinda slowly. My ISP speed used to be 10MB/s, but now I'm downloading torrents only with 1MB/s. Task manager shows that network is used by 10% since I have my adapers speed and duplex set to auto negotation. Do you have any ideas how to fix this?
EDIT: I use cable connection.

Preferred Solution: New router slow down speed

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/directdownload.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

When you have a new issue, please start a new thread. We deal with issues in separate threads, makes it much easier to keep things straight.

First think I'd try for the slow router speed is to change the MTU in the WAN configuration section of the router to 1492, see if that helps the issue.

A:Slow internet speed through router

I would first uninstall or delete existing install. Reboot, and reinstall. Is it slow in both regular connect and Wireless? Or is only your wireless connect slow?
How do you determine it is slow? What are you using to test the connection speed?

Hi, I have the sierra aircard 875u, ATT 3g, Ijust bought the MBR 1000 router to network. THe speed on the host is actually faster than using the att communication manager. However, on the other computer itis really slow. Previously I had a linksys N router and managed to get internet sharing up and there was no speed issue. THe speed noted on the client is 54mbs, signal strength "very good" However this is extremely slow, slower than a dial up connection.
Is this typical, is there a way to speed it up? Could the problem be a slow network card?
Thanks

A:Dreadfully Slow Internet Speed When Using Router

You might want to try a few ping tests:

1. Try and ping your router (note the speed in ms, should be 1)
2. Try and png your 2nd PC (should also be quite quick)
3. Try and ping a public ip address in your country (or a website, should be under 100)
4. Try and ping www.ireland.com

If you receive timeout errors or extremely high times (1000+ ms) then something is taking up your bandwidth perhaps. Let me know how u go & if need be i'll guide u further :grinthumb

Hi Team,

I've purchased a DIR 600 router 3 months back, from the time I've purchased it i haven't been able to get it to work...

have been on long calls with the DIR tech team, but all in vein!!!

In the past 3 months I've got 3 replacements for the router.

The Issue is->Every time i connect to the internet via router the internet speed is painfully slow... google takes 15mins to open up

On the contrary when i connect directly using the Modem the internet speed is just fine and the internet line has no issues at all. (its a 2MBPS line)

Please help me get the router to work!!!

Thanks,
Sam

I have a question about my router, it's a Linksys 1900AC. It broadcasts 2.4 and 5. My laptop does not have a receiver to pick up the 5. My average download speed connected to 2.4 is around 10Mbp/s. I'm paying for 150Mbp/s.

If I connect my wife's laptop to 5, she gets a download speed of 122Mbp/s. My daughter's MacBook gets 138Mbp/s. If I connect theirs to 2.4, they get an average of 10Mbp/s. Do you think there is something wrong with the router and the 2.4 network? The download speed seems awfully slow to me.

I have tried changing channels 1,6,and 11
There is also a setting to pick
Mixed
B,G,N
B only
G only
N only

If I set it to N, my laptop will increase the download speed to about 30Mbp/s but I have older devices in the house so I keep it set to Mixed.

All the laptops were tested at a distance of about 35 ft.

Hi I'm Currently using a cable 10MB connection.

When i upgraded to 10MB connection MSN/WLM file transfers were extremly faster than ever before.

I got a wireless router
Netgear WGT624 108Mb 802.11g Wireless Cable/DSL Router

Now My PC isn't using a wireless connection, i have it wired.

PC ethernet

Ethernet port of wireless router(1 of 4 ports)
from
router port(WAN)
To
Cable Modem vai Ethernet again.
cable modem to Internet.

Now since then i've had very bad transfers on some occassions you get the message saying "experiencing a slow connection click here to fine out why."

Usually inicates your behind a firewall.

I Don't have the firewall enabled on My wireless router, i use only Windows XP SP2 built in Firewall.

Does anyone no of a way i can fix MSN/WLM transfers?

A:Slow MSN/WLM transfer Speed since wireless router installed.

You don't have to enable the firewall functionality in the router - it is inherent. You have to forward certain ports to your computer or enable UPnP to allow MSN active file transfers.

Hi all.

Not sure what is up here but we are having considerable problems with the internet.
Sometimes it will be fine although only getting a download speed of 3mbps and upload speed of 0.8mbps.
Other times it will take an age to open a google page and then just stop working altogether.
Sometimes turning off the router and waiting a minute or so will get us back to 3mbps but it doesn't always last. Everytime we turn laptop on we have to reset the router again.  It as though there is too much going through it and it jamming up all the time. Is this possible or am I infected with something?

I just bought a new modem to replace the one I am renting from Comcast (Motorola SB6120: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16825122009). I have been using an Encore (EHH-WI-G) 802.11g 54Mbps router.

I got everything hooked up last night and I noticed that when I was hooked up directly to the modem (ethernet), my internet was super fast. When I hooked up the wireless router and accessed the internet through it, my speed was noticeably slower. I used speedtest.net to see what my speeds were like:

Wired to modem: download 50+ Mbps (I don't know how in the world it read this high...I'm not even paying for these speeds from Comcast)

Wireless through router: download only around 5 Mbps

Can someone explain this to me? Is there a setting on my router that is restricting the speed in some way?

Technically speaking, yes. You've added another "hop" for the packets to have to travel to and from.

I found this helpful information on possible solutions, very familiar with errors on previous Microsoft operating systems. http://www.vandersluijs.nl/content/view/973/96/lang,enI uninstalled one of the suggested updates and so far it is fine, the update was only optional so no security threats. I think it has helped, not certain if it will be like a fresh install because windows is slower than it was two weeks ago. If 3 weeks is best windows can handle for being ready for a new install I may have to go back to Linux. I hope this thread can stay on this forum somewhere to help others follow the link I posted above for possible solutions to this problem, it will save them time and effort trying numerous things.

Recently moved house and had installed my internet today, the exact same setup.

Right now the only difference with this setup is that the router is plugged into my laptop, and if anything, it's closer to my computer than it was in the previous house.

My problem is that it randomly goes slow for short periods of time, or in games it lags like crazy. For example while watching youtube it'll shoot up the loading bar fast and then all of a sudden stop, and go really slowly, then back into fast speed over and over.

What can I do to resolve this?

A:Slow speed, fast speed, slow speed.

Go to speedtest.net and see what your download and upload speeds are. Watching a youtube video will use less bandwidth than a game would.

You could also do a tracert to google.com to see if there are any high response times.

Hi, welcome to this forum!

Please visit this site to measure the real speed of the connection. When done please post the results here.
Internet providers (who gives you the internet) usually make an offer of x speed internet but they only guarantee you to get much less. So the speed might change up and down sometimes. If the internet is still very slow please read the details of your agreement with the internet provider. But first give us the speed results from that site

Recently my desktop has experienced very slow download speeds (~0.11 Mbps), however the upload speed appears to be in line (~2.0Mbps). These numbers are taken from Comcast's speed test (my ISP). It is obviously a problem with my PC because everything else on the network (PS3, Laptop) have great signals with no problems. I just recently reverted the Desktop back to its factory state, and everything was working fine for a couple of months.

The desktop in question uses Vista 32-bit and the Belkin Basic USB Wireless Adapter.

Welcome to TSG:
Run a speedtest here and see if the results are the same:

Hello,

I have an 8 port "wired" router from Linksys that I have been using in conjunction to a wireless access point which had been plugged into one of the open ports on the wired router. Lately I have been having connection issues with the WAP so I decided it may be time to upgrade. Not thinking about it, I picked up a new Linksys E1000 wiress router (as opposed to a WAP) and, after a lengthy support call with Linksys, got that up and running.

So I have operability for both wired and wireless devices, however I have noticed a substantial slow down on my wired devices. I also just upped the plan with my ISP to increase my bandwidth which I see on the wired PCs but not on the wireless which seem less. Would a WAP be faster than a wireless router by nature?

Any ideas? Thanks in advance

A:Slow wireless after connecting Linkys wirless router to Linksys wired router

Have you made sure you have the latest firmware for the wireless router? If you updated the firmware be sure to reset it to factory default settings and reconfigure it.

What speeds do you get with a test such as speedtest.net with a connection to the wired router? With an ethernet connection to the wireless router? With a wireless connection?

Please download MiniToolBox  , save it to your desktop and run it.
Checkmark the following checkboxes:  List last 10 Event Viewer log  List Installed Programs  List Users, Partitions and Memory size.
Click Go and paste the content into your next post.
Also...please Publish a Snapshot using Speccy,  taking care to post the link of the snapshot in your next post.
Go to Piriform's website, and download the free version on the left.  Click Download from Piriform.com (the FileHippo link requires an extra click). Or if you want to use a portable version of Speccy (which doesn't require installation), click the builds page link and download the portable version. You will now be asked where you want to save the file. The best place to put it is the Desktop, as it will be easy to find later.
After the file finishes downloading, you are ready to run Speccy. If you downloaded the installer, simply double-click on it and follow the prompts until installation is complete. If you downloaded the portable version, you will need to unzip it before use. Right-click the ZIP file and click Extract all. Click Next. Open up the extracted folder and double-click on Speccy.

Once inside Speccy, it will look similar to this (with your computer's specifications, of course):
Now, at the top, click File > Publish Snapshot. You will see the following prompt:
Click Yes > then Copy to Clipboard
Now, once you are back in the forum topic you are posting in, click the button. Right-click in the empty space of the Reply box and click Paste. Then, click Add Reply below the Reply box.

I have a Linksys WRT54GL Router

Linksys WRT54GL Wireless Broadband Router 802.11b/g up to 54Mbps - Newegg.com

On the router itself and even on the store page, it claims that the router supports up to 54Mbps, however I am only getting up to ~37Mbps. When I plug my computer directly to my modem, then I do get my 50Mbps connection, so it is definitely a problem with the router

Is there anything I can do to get 50Mbps through the router or is it just false advertising?

Hi Monster, this is not false advertising, it's a number of factors that come into play, you could play with different channels to receive 50Mbps, it's all down to how far away you are and what's interfering with the connection, it's not false advertising because companies say "Up to 54Mbps" which basically means it's capable of this but you're most likely not going to get this.

I have recently had my broadband speed increased from 'up to 50mbs' to 'up to 70 mbs'
Using the Speedtest app my ipad indeed clocks download speed at an average of 65-68mbs and an upload of around 5mbs which I am more than happy with, especially as it was a free upgrade.

When I ran the same test on my android devices however, although the upload speed was on a par with the ipad, they only achieved a download speed of around 35-40mbs, which is actually slower than the pre upgrade speed.

Is there a reason for such a radical differential in speed between the different devices/operating systems, particularly in view of the similar upload speeds?

Hello everyone, I had a question about connection speed and how its divided between your home devices. Now I know a speed test tells you how fast your network speed is but no speed test will tell how many mbp a single device is getting. So right now I have 26 Mbp and four devices connected how would it get divided ? And is there a way to test the speed of a single device ?

I was using an old Linksys wireless router but got a new Cisco/Linksys Valet router. Upload and dowload speeds usually good, but sometimes there is a very noticeable drop in download speed. My ISP, Comcast says no trouble from their end and router tech support says no trouble with them either. Where I notice a huge drop in speed is streaming with Netflix. I never ever had a slow speed before but now with Netflix, via Wii on TV a movie will stop and show it is retrieving.

Question: Can my new router somehow result in slower speed?

A:new router but slower speed?

Hmm...

Check to see if your router is set to a/b/g/n or a lower speed like b. I like to have mine on the fastest speed unless a slower adapter prevents this.

You can also flash your router to see if this helps. Make sure your router is not being blocked, is high up and clear of obstructions.

You can connect to a site such as:

Check My Internet Connection Speed | Internet Connection Speedometer | McAfee

Also, I think some ISPs will reduce your speed when streaming large amounts of data, but I'm not positive of this.

Finally, I have a Linksys router, but flashed it with dd-wrt

http://www.dd-wrt.com

I can actually increase my signal strength, within reason.

Router Speed router and performing the transfer results in speeds around Megabytes Router Speed Loss? per second It was my impression that Gigabit ports meant that it could transfer data throughout the network at gigabit speeds am I incorrect Sending the file via wireless g results in speeds of around - Megabytes per second which once again seems a tad slow I also know that MB s is awfully close to ye olde standard of Megabits per second so I assume there could be some sort of problem there Any help would be appreciated streaming HD movies as well as transferring HD movies throughout the house would be a whole lot better with some more bandwidth Thanks nbsp

Hey. I just got some new cat6A STP cables, and tested out my connection speed by directly connecting to my computer. I got somewhere around 100Mbs (I live at a university, so the internet is fast). When I connect my computer through my 10 year old linksys router, it maxes out right at 10Mbs. I am assuming that it is too old to support 100Mbs speeds, so I was wondering if I get a new router or switch, would one of those be able to support the 100Mbs, and which would be faster?

Edit: I guess I should add that I have tried looking for the answer to this question but most answers that I saw were for 5Mbs connections, thus people said it did not matter. But I could not find anything about higher speeds.

The computer gets 60 Mbps download connected to the modem but a max. of 36 Mbps connected to the router? But the router is fine with several other computers, right?

My best guess, emphasis on guess, is that for some unknown reason the NIC is having difficulty syncing to the correct connection speed with the router. Try different LAN ports to make sure it's not just the one port. Then in Device Manager - right click the ethernet - Properties - Advanced tab - Change the Speed & duplex property to 100 Mbps full duplex or 1000 Mbps full duplex, whichever is most appropriate for the router and NIC.

Hello all.

I have a Linksys 4 Port Eatherfast Cable/DSL router - -Model BEFSR41.
I have two computers attached to them - one is my home pc, the other being a deployed computer from my job, as I work from home. I am hooked up to high speed cable internet service with 5 Megs.

Bottom line, work pc is not working at its best, and my work's IT department called and pinged my system.

The system pinged at 100 milliseconds, and the right ping should be at 35 milliseconds.

Is there any way I can get the speed back from 100 to 35 milliseconds? And, the 192.168.1.1 Linksys address is not working either.

Please...any advice is deeply appreciated because I work from home and really need to keep this job.

Thank you in advance.

I've been through 3 N routers this month, concluding that N just doesn't deliver on the 2 claims; speed and distance. That said, I'm sick of crappy reviews... heres what matters to me, and I'm guessing a few others.

1. What is your favorite router? You must have owned 2 or more for your opinion to be relevant.

2. I'm looking for experience in WiFi between two apartments to be exact, or any share thats spanned through multiple walls.

3. Not only is distance and penetration important, but consistency, and an overall lack of annoyances, such as, having a signal but not being able to login to administrate via 192.x.x.x.

While on the topic of routers, has anyone found a great range boosting antenna? In particular, paired with the router since the number of ports has to be equal to the antenna..

A:Best G or N router - Speed Range Consistency

Go with the D-link 655 or the 825 if you need dual band and more range. Although the reviews are better for the 655.

I am on a point to point internet connection that is rated at 2mbps. With my PC connected directly to the modem or through an old Airlink101 (model AR680W) router typical DL speeds are 1.9 to 2.4 mbps. However the Airlink router has to be reset 2 to 3 times per day.

I am trying to replace this router, however every router I've tried cuts the download speed in half (about 0.9 to 1.3 mbps). So far I've tried two Ultra Speed wireless N routers; two D-Link DIR 615's; and one Linksys E1200. When I talk to their tech support after testing they say that the routers must be faulty, but what are the odds of getting 5 bad routers from 3 different manufactures.

My IP does not know of any compatability issues with any routers.

How can I solve this problem or is there a way to fix my old router. Thankyou

A:Wireless Router G vs N Speed Question

Your wired connection is not "g','n', etc, it is Ethernet & either 10 mbs, 100mbcs or gigabit. It will generally always be faster than wired. If your laptop uses 'g' wireless, a new router w/ 'n' wil not (necessarily) be faster.. the laptop will only work at 'n' speeds..
The speed, however can be affwected by distance, or obstacles(walls, appliances etc) between you and the router.
Also, check is the software on your router or laptop lets you use different channels in wireless. Using a less crwoded channel may help your performance. (if you have an android phone or tablet, there is an app that will tell you the best channel)

Broadband reports.com after speed test recommended "tweak test" but that test caused my computer to hang up. And I don't even know what "tweak" refers to anyhow so I'm afraid to go further without some advice.

Hello,

I just replaced my old router (Linksys WRT54G) to a Linksys x1000. However, my download speed is slower than the previous router I had. I tried the following things to resolve this problem:

Upgrading to the latest firmware version;Updated my wireless network card drivers to the latest version;Switching between different channels (channel 1 and 5 and default channel). I have set Network Mode to: Mixed and I set Channel Width to Automatic (20 or 40 MHz).

When using my old router I had an average download speed of 1 MB/sec while using the new router I can't get pas 500 KB/sec. In both cases I was sitting next to the router.

Oh, and by the way, there's also a port on the router named DSL. It looks like it doesn't matter whether I connect that port to my modem. How come? What's its function?

Anyone got an idea?
Thanks

Hello,

I put a Linksys Wireless 802.11g Router on my home network and got my laptop and computer both running on the Internet fine. I secured it with WPA, no problem. The problem is my Internet speed has suffered greatly. I ran netspeedz before connecting the router and was getting 16-17 Mbps for download speeds and after connecting the router I was getting 1.4-1.5 Mbps. I huge difference in speeds. The model number is WRT54GS Ver 7. If you need more information, please let me know what you need and I'll try to provide it.

Thank you for any help and support!

I am using a Belkin Wireless Router to get DSL internet from my downstairs computer (the computer i use is upstairs). I've never had any problems with it, but over the past week it has been acting funny. I'll be using the internet, playing an online game, when everything goes to a crawl. I'll check the icon in the task bar, and it says the speed had droppes all the way to 1.0 Mbps. Slowly, it will climb back to normal. Then a while later, drop again. The thing normally hovers between 52.0 Mbps and 48.0 Mbps.

I don't know what the problem is, but I do know it's annoying the hell out of me. Any suggestions?

A:Periodic Drops In Speed With a Router

This is the curse of wireless. They all dip sometimes but down to 1.0 is pretty bad. First, change the channel. If it is a 54G channels 1, 6, and 11 don't overlap so go to one of those first (usually channel ,1 is default) so switch to channel 6 and see what happens (helped me with signal losses). Do you have a 2.4 GHZ wireless phone? They interfere big time with wireless routers because they transmit a stronger signal in the same frequency band. Adjust it's channel too, as far away from the routers as possible or better yet junk it and get a 5.0GHZ phone. Move the router around but upstairs to downstairs is tough regardless signal-wise. Try this before spending more money on goodies like boosters etc.

After dealing with BrightHouse Networks Roadrunner and Linksys tech support for the past 3 weeks and not getting the download speeds anywhere close to the 10 Mbps(10,000 Kbps) that my computers should be getting, I finally discovered what the problem was:

The network cards were set to "10mb half duplex" and had not been changed to "100mb full duplex" after installing a router.

Once the setting change was made, the download speeds increased dramatically and are now very close to the correct speed.

A:problem with speed touch router

Please supply the following info, exact make and models of the equipment please.

What country are you located in.
Name of your ISP (Internet Service Provider).
What is the expected Upstream/Downstream speed for your ISP Connection?
Make and exact model of the broadband modem.
Make and exact model and hardware version of the router (if a separate unit).
Model numbers can usually be obtained from the label on the device.
Connection type, wired or wireless.
If wireless, encryption used, (none, WEP, WPA, or WPA2)
Make and model of your computer.
Version and patch level of Windows on all affected machines, i.e. XP-Home (or XP-Pro), SP1-SP2, Vista, etc.
The Internet Browser in use, IE, Firefox, Opera, etc.

Please give an exact description of your problem symptoms, including the exact text of any error messages.

If you're using a wireless connection, have you tried a direct connection with a cable to see if that changes the symptoms?

If there are other computers on the same network, are they experiencing the same issue, or do they function normally?

On any affected computer, I'd also like to see this:

Hold the Windows key and press R, then type CMD to open a command prompt:

Type the following commands:

PING 216.109.112.135

PING yahoo.com

NBTSTAT -n

IPCONFIG /ALL

Right click in the command window and choose Select All, then hit Enter.
Paste the results in a message here.

If you are on a machine with no network connection, use a floppy, USB disk, or a CD-RW disk to transfer a text file with the information to allow pasting it here.

I have a router Linksys WRT54G. Is there a way in Windows 7 or the router to restrict the upload speed for computers connected to my router (wireless)?

A:Need to Restrict upload speed in router

You might be able to restrict some things if you have any settings named QOS (quality of service). I just looked in my router, it has some settings for that but it appears to be pretty lame in respect to limiting a user to a preset upload speed.

I also checked my switch. I think a managed switch could do all the things you want, and more. It appears to me that a managed switch would do a better job of Traffic Shaping than a router.

Haven't tried any of that, as of yet. Sorry I couldn't be more helpful.

Hi there, I have a ZXDSL 531B router from ZTE. I'm a network newbie here. Now here's the setup for the DSL router with 4 LAN ports, which all are connected to different PCs. And this happens to be the ONLY source of internet to all of us. Here's my needs, I want to control EACH LAN port speed, as it can be shared equally & not one stealing most / all bandwidth & rest left begging . Every computer uses Windows 7. Please help!

Hi Guys,

I am new to networking and I have several questions to ask.

I want to know if I split my internet using router to 4 computers is the speed becoming 1/4 for each computer or the same as original?
What if from the 4 computer only 1 is used, is the speed still 1/4 or original speed?

Is bandwith the same as speed?
Thank you

Hi All
I know I am lucky to have a 100mb internet connection (virginmedia) But I speed test and only get about 47mb (This is using my PC hard wired directly to the superhub).HOWEVER, when I run my PC in SAFE MODE WITH NETWORKING I get around 102 to 104mb ( which is great if I only used safemode).
Therefore something is draing my connection. I have scanned for Malware, Viruses ans disabled most things in the MSCONFIG but still no improvement.

I attach 3 screenshots which may be of those who know about these things
Any help would be great

Thanks

I have a Linksys WRT 54G wifi router. It works fine and my iPad2 is fast with it. However, my laptop seems to have lag time when I am on the Internet. Is it the router? Should I upgrade to a 802.11n one? Is the range the problem or the speed? I know the speed is 54 bps and the range is supposed to be 110 feet.
Thanks!

It's a problem with your internet connection, a cable, the modem, the router, your laptop or maybe wireless interference if it only occurs with a Wi-Fi connection.

Hello.
I have a 20mb Cable connection (Virgin Media), and I recently bought a Netgear WGT624 v2 (Cable version, not DSL), so I can use wireless with my laptop, and hook up my Xbox 360.
When using the router, my connection speed never goes above 10mb speeds (half of what I am supposed to get). When I remove the router, my speed goes above 10mb.

Neither the Laptop nor the Xbox 360 are turned on, so they cannot be causing the problems.

Does anyone know if there is something I can do to get the speeds up? Maybe something I can set in the router config?

A:Netgear Router Limiting Speed

I couldn't find the link where there was a bunch of routers tested for their throughput performance. But just because a router has a 100 Mbit WAN port doesn't mean it's going to be able to route packets at that speed. The internal processor still has to process each packet going in and out of the router. Here's a link with a few routers tested: http://www.smallnetbuilder.com/content/view/30280/51/1/5/

In the chart you'll see WAN throughput both up and down. The FVS336, FVX538, and FVS124 are all in Netgear's SMB line of routers. The FVX538 is Netgear's top dog router which is the only one capable of reaching near 100 Mbit performance. Now look at the FVS124, it just barely breaks 10 Mbit/s.

So the performance you're getting might be indicative of really how fast that router can forward packets.

Purchased Windows 8 Pro with a new computer system, an HP Envy, last week for work.

Loading internet pages with Windows 8 is incredibly slow. Had the very same connection with a 7 year old HP using Windows XP and the speed blew this away.

I currently have one of the earliest models of the Linksys Access Point WAP 11 hooked up to my 4 port wired Linksys Router BEF which I use just for my laptop. I have cable intenet right now and am using Power Line adapters with my wired router for my other computers. However, I find them to be finicky with my new home's wiring though and they seem to break easily. I was thinking about going totally wireless. One problem is that my access point barely can put out a signal going up one story in my home. My question is should I put out about $30 buck for a used Linksys range booster or just get a new Wireless Router to use for all my computers. If so will the range be appreciatively better? What kind of speeds can I get? What router would give me the best bang for my buck? (I don't need anything super crazy over-the-top).

I am considering the addition of a video streaming device (Roku). In anticipation of making that connection I resurrected a D-Link Router I purchased many years ago. It's the DI-604 [wired, not wireless]. I connected in to my Motorola SURFboard SB6121 modem. Before I made the connection I checked my download speeds. I was consistently registering 58Mbps. After the router was added to the circuit my download speeds dropped consistently to 36Mbps.

Are there any adjustments I can make to that router, my computer, my modem to re-gain some of the speed I have lost?

Is that reduction in download speed likely to make HDTV video streaming a frustrating, unsatisfactory experience?

Thanks

A:Router significantly decreased download speed

I have 20Mb broadband from Virgin and Motorola Surfboard modem connected to a Netgear WGT624V3 router.

Our household has 2 Vista laptops and an XP Desktop, all of which connect wirelessly to the internet.

However, none of the connected devices, even when only one is in use, can achieve a download speed of better than 3Mb.

But, if I connect any of these devices directly to the modem, I get consistent download speeds of 16-18Mb.

So the router would appear to be the weak link.

I've updated to the latest router firmware, and I've checked the Netgear website, this forum and the wider web for ideas, but have found nothing useful.

Perhaps I just need a better router, but I'd like to try to get this one working.

Thanks in advance for any suggestions.

Hi all,

So I received a new modem today and wanted to tandem it with an extra router that I have so I can get wireless at work. Here are the steps I've taken:

Verify modem connection works connected directly
Set modem to bridge mode
Reset router, set to PPPOE with proper log in information
Try to connect, and get the message "Could not obtain IP from PPPoE"
I've researched as much as I could stand online, and found these to be the major steps everywhere, most people miss the bridge mode but I'm sure I've done it properly (switched back and forth atleast 5 times). I don't currently have access to the connection but I can respond tonight to questions about what else I may or may not have done, and will take what is suggested here to try tomorrow. Thanks in advance.

I've got 15 Mbps internet service from the cable company. When just one computer is connected to the modem without the router, the speeds average about 8-9 Mbps. However, when we attach the router to share the internet, speeds drop off significantly, like down to about 1-1.5 Mbps average and max at about 2-3 Mbps (around 3000 KB/s) and that's when one computer is downloading and the other computer is idle. The router says its capable of 54 Mbps and both computers have 10/100 ethernet adapters. Also, I'm using another router as a repeater since we don't have a long enough cable from where the one router hooked into the modem is.

I don't understand how the router is restricting the speeds since me and my roommate share large files (4-5 gigs sometimes) and we can transfer files of that size in like 4-5 minutes.

I can access the router and install any program in my computer but I can not force the other to install a program and they can uninstall it. I don't know if the router has option to limit the speed of other users.

Note: I am connected to the router Wirelessly too.

hey. im having trouble over my router. since i installed it, my internet speed is very low like 20kbps. when i used my modem, speed goes 64kbps (which is my actual speed provided by ISP). im the only one using this router. so my question is what should i do. OS doesnt support modem.

PS: plz dont tell me mozilla 10x fast speed rubbish.

Is a router with 11 mbps faster than one with 56mbps? I have sypatico with 100 mbps speed and im trying to find a router that will allow for high speed transfers. does router speed make a difference, does download and upload speed all rely on how fast my sympatico is?

A:Question about router speed and internet connection

No. The router normally allows the full speed from your ISP-provider (which is hardly ever more than 2MB anyway). So any router would do for that matter.
The switch-part of the router allows traffic between PCs on that netweork. That is limited only by the Switch-speed (either 10MB or 100MB) and/or the PC's NIC speed, also normally 10/100MB. Some more expensive routers allow network-speeds of 1GB, provided all the PC-NICs are also 1GB.
