Windows 8 Auto user log in problem.

Q: Windows 8 Auto user log in problem.

I have some strange problem where every time I switch on my computer it will log into another user account and if I switch users it will automatically log in to the same account, and it is very frustrating, I had the normal auto log in problem before and a user messaged me on how to fix it which worked (Changing registry and inheritance but after awhile another problem has appeared. I thought it was just the same problem but the registry hasn't changed. I did find that if I disable the account it will eliminate this but I do not want to do that seeing as how one day it might randomly appear again on another username.

Preferred Solution: Windows 8 Auto user log in problem.

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/directdownload.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Your Administrator account has become corrupted. Do you have another Administrator user account on the computer?
Restart the computer and press F8. In the Advanced Boot menu choose Safe Mode with Networking. Log in as another Admin useror the Built in Administrator. If that works, Uninstall Deep Freeze. Try creating a new Admin User and copy your files over from the old profile to the new one. Fix a corrupted user profile - Windows Help
If you can't boot into Safe Mode, if you have a Windows XP CD boot off of that and get to the Recovery Console. Here type chkdsk /R and press enter. Check Disk will try and fix any errors. This could take a while. Then boot normally. If this fails, back in the RC type FIXBOOT and press enter then try to boot normally. If that fails, back in the RC type FIXMBR press enter and try and boot normally.

My computer has been to auto-update windows.  After an update two days ago I am given a bubble stating that I am signed in with a temporary user profile.  I am prompted to sign out, and sign back in with my user profile info.  Which, I did, but I am still being logged in with the temporary profile.  I'm trying not to panic,  but I cannot access any of my photos, documents or files.

Every time Microsoft does one of the automatic updates I end up spending hours trying to get my PC back to where it's useful again.  Historically, I have gone to the Microsoft website and updated ALL the other updates, and that has resolved the issue; the issue is usually that I can no longer browse the internet. But this is very different; it would seem that my entire computer has been erased.

Please help!

Good evening from Graz,

i have quite a strange problem on my personal pc since the last few days. I cannot login to my useraccount(which has a transparent picture at the logon screen since a few days).
I have just one workarround: if i login with my adminaccount and logoff, the userpicture of my privateaccount appears again and the login is possible.

What could this problem be related to?

I am looking for a program something like what my library has on their computers. I want to be able to give each of the kids a username and password then when they log on a timer will automatically log them off say 30 min. but will also allow me to give them a max daily time limit. Or if this is possible within win 8 itself

Thanks

Well, my problem is that when I start up my computer, it logs onto one user account, "James". That particular account has a password on it, but it still logs onto it without asking anything.

So, anyone that knows how to restart a computer (hopefully everyone) can just get into all the files and, more importantly, the administrator account of the computer.

I've looked for a setting to display the Welcome Screen at startup, but nothing seems to work.

*note: if this might answer any questions, here's my boot.ini.

boot.ini is a boot file...specifically for chosing which partition to boot the OS off of.

Have you tried going into the User Accounts (via control panel) and turning off the welcome screen?

For my HTPC I would like to have 2 user options at startup. If no user is selected within 7 seconds I would like the system to automatically log into one of the two user accounts. I have seen this feature used in Linux Mint, but have no idea how to set it up in Win7. Neither of the two accounts have passwords, so this would not be any more of a security issue.

A:Can I Set a User to Auto Login After X Seconds?

AFAIK you can either set it to auto log-on to one account or none.

The other option would be having 2 choices in the bootloader, as there is no NTOS Kernel switch to define this it would mean having 2 OS's, boot timeout set to 7, autologon for the default or manual selection for the other (which could also auto-logon if you wished) a very tiedious means of achiving your goal, and would hinder user switching greatly.

Every time Windows 8 boots, the system tries to login as the last user account that was used. If the account has a password, the user will be asked for a password first thing when the system starts up; if not, the system will directly log in to the user account.
Some users in my house don't want to have a password and I have to log out of their accounts and again log in to mine every time I start the computer after they used it. I'd just prefer to start with a tiled user list, in a similar fashion as it was in Windows 7 (or after you log out in Win 8).
Is it possible to disable this auto-login feature? The only way I found involves the system asking not only for the password but for the username as well, which is hardly satisfactory. Thanks!

A:User account auto-login

Hello Ben,

Unfortunately, the only way is to have each user account password protected. Otherwise it will always auto sign-in to the last user account that signed out if it's not password protected.

I believe that I inadvertantly downloaded or opened a virus or malware of some kind that is now preventing me from accessing my laptop. When I logon under any user I am automatically logged off again. I have tried booting in safe mode and to command prompt, but to no avail. Still the same problem.

I have looked on line and many people including Microsoft say that this is because 'userinit.exe' is missing in the registry. I have accessed the registry using bartPE and userinit is there.

Unfortunately I cannot locate my XP disk for this laptop; however I have a recovery disk from an older laptop, but when trying this I get a blue screen saying ' A problemhas been detected and windows has shut down to prevent damage to your computer'???? This error does give some further info, but without being able to access the laptop I cannot do anything about it.

Can you offer any advice?

A:Auto Logoff after user Logon

your userinit.exe is located in C:\Windows\System32

You can get a copy of the userinit.exe from another computer, or boot into recovery console from a XP disc, and log in. You should be at a c:\windows prompt. Type the following:

cd\windows\system32

You should be at a c:\windows\system32 prompt.

copy userinit.exe wsaupdater.exe

Allow it to overwrite.

Type exit and allow it to reboot, pull the CD.

I am working on a computer with Windows Xp Professional SP3. I was going through the group policy to familiarize myself with its capabilities. I saw an option to restart the computer when a user logs off. I was curious to see this option in action and chose it. I do not know where in the gpedit.msc I found it before and now I don't know how to shut it off. I did not type any code or add a txt file as many of the options suggest when I Googled my situation. It was simply an option to enable. Please let me know where to find this to shut it off. It is really starting to get on my nerves. I appreciate any constructive input. Thanks.

Hello, I use wake on lan to boot my pc to access and use it remotely. On Windows 7 I remember being able to auto log on with the set password to my account and then have it switch users right away so it was still password protected but my remote connecting software would load. I do not remember how I achieved this on 7 and wish to be able to do this since I have moved to Windows 10. Any help us greatly appreciated. Thanks!

A:Auto login then switch user

Hello Firebird5150 Welcome to the Ten Forums!

I haven't been running anything with a lan or other form of wake up method but perhaps what I use on both 10 as well as 7 and even on VMs to connect desktops back and forth as well as see VMs and a new 10 laptop connect remotely could prove to be a help there. Without spending on a commercial license you can use the Team Viewer program for the substitute of the usual remote access function seen in Windows.

Once the remote pc is woken up you would then simply connect to it by way of the TV program where you can switch from one account to another even when having the hidden built in system administrator account enabled. The process would be a fast logout of one and sign in to the other. That would mean having to re-enter the next account's password being the only inconvenience.

With 10 as well as with 7 the main account still requires a password there for the autologon option. The guide you will need to look over is seen in the 10F tutorial section. Sign in User Account Automatically at Windows 10 Startup - Windows 10 Forums

That's one I still have to go over here since between desktops and vms I get too busy signing in at times! I'm quite sure you are also looking to cut that time down a bit as well. The TV program will get timed out after any lengthy period of inactivity however since you are accessing one to the TV servers to see this type of connection work. Each machine connects to each other by way of the server.

A:Solved: HELP! Deleted user after auto reboot

I *did* do a quick search when I posted my question, but a more thorough search helped me find this thread: http://forums.techguy.org/showthread.php?t=557787&referrerid=259020

I was able to start my computer in safe mode and thereby see both administrator accounts. My first step was to copy my important files to a common place, so that difused my anxiety.

I then followed the suggestion in the thread ("Computer management = right click My Computer>Manage>Local Users>") to eliminate the VAIO account. When I rebooted, my administrative account was there and I was happy.

What a relief. Hope this helps anyone who might have the same problem...Daniel

I have a computer that in BIOS has a Hard drive USER defined as 20Gig (and windows98 recognizes it as 20Gig). When I put it in Auto instead of USER in the BIOS windows recognizes it as approx 15Gig. Why does this happen? The reason I even changed it to Auto was because when I tried to run Norton's disk doctor it says that my drive was configured wrong (or something like that) and would need to be changed to continue.

A:which is the actual HDD Capacity.. (USER vs Auto in Bios)

You could either look at the label for a model number and manufacturer, go to the web site and find the information or get a hard drive utility from the manufacturer that will identify the drive parameters. I would go with the model number.

Always it's work at administrative privillage. But for security reason, I want to give all my users to normal user mode. But, then they can't use this feature. Then I've to log in as admin to get the updates. Its time wasting.

So, any option to run this update in normal user mode?

Before v1607, I used the gpedit logon script to disable the automatic login of non-passworded accounts. It's been fine for all the time I've been with Win10 since release.
Specifically:

Code:
Name: C:\Windows\System32\reg.exe
Parem: ADD HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Authentication\LogonUI\UserSwitch /V Enabled /T REG_dWORD /D 1 /F

Since v1607 hit, it has stopped working. So I tried this instead, and the keys/strings were already set as it says so on the guide--so nothing to do there.

Does anyone else have any suggestions? Other than adding a password to this one account or having to type in a username/path to login (this account is for family members). Or did Microsoft bork something again?

Does anyone know of a way, or an app, which would allow me to have my user account picture update every the login / lock screen is displayed?

Basically I have a folder full of images that I like to use as my account picture, but instead of changing it every week or whatever, I'd like for it to change every time I login, so next time the login/lock screen is shown, it's different..

Does anyone know of anything like this? Or would be able to make a simple script to do it?

EDIT: Ok I've made a script which updates the user profile .bmp file, but changing that file does NOT update the user profile picture if it's a local user (it works for domain users apparently).. Any idea where the actual edit needs to be made / what cache needs dropping?

Thanks for any help!

A:Auto-changing user account picture?

Hmmm. I fired up Process Monitor (PM) and was not able to see the step(s) that you need to do to get the desired results. You might want to spend more time on it than I did. Filter PM on Explorer and record/monitor the events that take place when you manually change a user's picture via Control Panel > User Accounts.

The profile bmp that you mentioned can be deleted if this is for a local user account - even after a restart, the user image is coming from somewhere else.

If you really want to dig into this issue - you can run PM from one user account while you log off and on to another user account. PM should show you where W7 is getting the image from for the log on screen.

I would like to completely disable auto run / auto play in Windows Media Player 12 on Windows 7, and I cannot find a way to do so. I've searched the web endlessly, and there are lots of suggestions, but nothing works. I have disabled every type of auto run / auto play I can find, but if Windows Media Player is open and I insert a flash drive, CD, or DVD, whatever I'm playing is interrupted by what was inserted even if it's not media. Just a plain, blank flash drive does this.

Has anyone else been able to figure this out?

Hi all. I'm on Vista and an Acer Aspire 5920G laptop.
A few weeks ago, my pc stopped remembering my username on my Hotmail account.
I didn't change anything and wasn't aware of downloading anything that would have changed the settings. I have tried to sort it out, but can't make it happen.
Other usernames arre remembered (the one on TechGuy for example).
I go to my emails quite often during the day and have a long username, so it's getting a bit boring.
Can anyone offer a solution??
Thanks in advance. Mark.

Alright so for some reason ever since I've "upgraded" to Windows 10 from Windows 8.1 I've been having numerous issues with my computer taking a very long time to boot and I've noticed it is logging me in sometimes without asking me for my password at boot. I really want to stop the black screens as waiting 5-10 minutes every time I turn my computer on is annoying. Also I don't see why it would log me in without prompting for my password as why else would I have a logon password? Please if someone knows how to fix my slow boot with black screen where it seems to be sometimes logging me in automatically that would be great thanks!

Sample Scenario:
Fresh AD account (first time login to a computer), skype and thunderbird not configured yet.

What I have in mind:
Once the user successfully login to PC using the NT login given, he will just click/run a program that will automatically configure his skype account and thunderbird email account, without going to the manual process of inputting the user/pass details and etc.

Note: The program will be linked to a database where the needed information for Skype and Thunderbird Email is stored and that the program will just fetch the data from the database.

Can anyone help/give me idea or sample script/scripting commands for this?

Thank you in advance.

oh yes, all those things

so, new PC recieved on friday everything is lovely except for the wireless card, its not doing anything, at all

windows installs it with its own drivers rather than the ones on the disc I have (which I cant stop it doing) if I uninstall the card it disappears from my device manager list, scan for new hardware and boom, windows does its own driver again, I can't stop it, sometimes I get the option to delete the driver and that does nothing either, it still installs its own crap as soon as it detects the card

if I try to run the CD setup wizard normally I get an error relating to the "ntdll.dll" file which I cant stop happening or progress past

like I say, its brand new, checked the card is in right, it is

im losing my mind with this, any help would be very much appreciated

thanks

A:Virus, Windows update, user profile and now Genuine Windows problem

If it gives you a access denied message while trying to activate windows; you may very well need to change the permissions for your user name in order for you to have access to it as windows 7 has quirks about having access to certain items even if your user name is a administrator. As for the non genuine windows thing; I strongly advise you in the future to never go to a non genuine site for any free browser. Always type the url directly into the address bar of the browser you use as that way you will encounter less issues. To get rid of the non genuine opera copy. I would download and install revo uninstaller from the link below and that should help to get rid of any registry entries in windows as well as the program folder:

http://www.revouninstaller.com/downl...e-portable.php

download, install, and run the uninstaller from the above link then do a google search for opera browser. Thats your best bet at this point.

Originally, when I transferred to another user, I was presented with the user names and could choose one without logging off completely from the current user, i.e. when I returned, open files would remain open.. Something unknown happened and now it is necessary to log off completely from the present user (and close all files) before selecting another user. How do I get back to the original procedure?

After entering password, the following message pops up;

'The User Profile Service service failed the log on. User profile cannot be loaded'.

Selecting OK causes the computer to shut down only to restart almost immediately back at the password and the process repeats over again.

Computer is a Dell studio laptop with windows xp operating system.

Am running Windows XP SP2

One of the user accounts is acting up. It won't let us change the background or any personal settings. The whole account is acting messed up. The taskbar looks like it's from windows 95 or something and the start menu is all grey and missing sections. Also, the internet (Internet explorer 7) refuses to accept new settings and always starts up to the onetime page.

Can't delete account and make new one as the problem just moves on to the user account made before the one you are deleting!!

Any help would be appreciated =)

A:Windows XP User Account Problem

Did you follow the steps in this MS article?
How to copy data from a corrupted user profile to a new profile
Note: You must sign in at least once to the New Account before you can copy the old profile, as the account folder is not created until it is signed into.
After copying the files, click on the New_Username folder, then click on the folder named Old_Username's Documents. Double click the Desktop.ini file, and change the line Owner=Old_Username to Owner=New_Username
Note that you will have to redo any customizations, i.e. wallpaper, colors, Folder Options, Cursors, etc.
Desktop.ini is a hidden file but if you followed the steps in the MS article your system should be set to display it.

Make sure you DO NOT copy the 3 ntuser files -- those are the ones with the corrupt settings.

You need to do a virus scan. I have been fighting a trojan downloader that installs this and lots of other fun spyware on the computer. Norton does not see this as a virus, but every other AV program I have run does.

You may want to run an online virus scan. www.antivirus.com is the one I use. Make sure to click auto clean.

After removing the virus, I have had to run spyware removal tools to get the rest of the garbage off the machines that had this. I used spybot, ad-aware and microsoft AS to do this. Took all 3 to get it all.

I submitted this to Symantec and they called it spyware and would not update their defs to catch this. Avast did a great job of cleaning it up.

That computer is probably infected.

I would click on Report and kindly ask to be moved to the Virus & Other Malware Removal forum. Be sure to provide the appropriate reports in that forum after reading THIS. From there, be patient. The malware removal experts are very busy! You should get an answer within the next 48 hours.

However, since this seems like a work computer, please read the following rule:

IMPORTANT NOTE REGARDING CORPORATE/COMPANY OWNED COMPUTERS

Please do not request assistance for corporate/company owned computers. Many changes/deletions are made during the clean up process, some of which may involve uninstalling programs, deleting folders/files, changing settings and/or removing policies etc. As we have no way of knowing for sure if these are actually needed for company operations, malware issues in these cases should be handled by your own IT Departments in order to avoid any undesirable results. Hi! I did an new install of windows 7 (home first then upgraded to pro)
I want to hide a user by doing this on the registry:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE \SOFTWARE \Microsoft \Windows NT \CurrentVersion \Winlogon \SpecialAccounts\ UserList ..then add dword32 by my username value to 0
I did this on my old laptop and it worked perfectly.

Now I've done the same thing on my new laptop. It works but stangely, the folder still appears in c\users.

The user is not visible in the panel control\users or at the start of the PC

I'm sure i've done the right thing, what is causing this? Could it be a bad install of windows? Please let me know if you have a idea!

Thank you very much for your help!

In Control Panel/User Accounts, I use my FIRST NAME on an Administrator account and log in with this name.

However, when I open Windows Explorer, my user account shows my SURNAME, which I would like to change to my first name. I have no idea why it should show my surname (unless this was in the original set up) - all the other user accounts are correct.

I do not want to create a new account and delete the present one as I would lose all my folders under my present user account.

Two things you can try doing:

First:

(pulled this from here)

Quote:
1. Restart your computer and hit F8 multiples times until you see a menu-like screen, if you see the Windows splash screen then repeat this step
2. Highlight and hit enter on Safe Mode with Command Prompt. Try logging in there. If it still doesn't work, then go to step17
3. If you are able to login, once a command prompt pops up, type: net user administrator password /active:yes (you can specify whatever password you want for the administrator account.)
4. If you get a message saying "The command completed successfully", then restart your computer by typing: shutdown -r
5. Boot up again pressing F8, but this time choose just Safe Mode.
6. You will be able to login as Administrator with the password you set in Step 3
7. Hit (windows logo)+R
8. Type regedit
9. Once the registry editor opens up, look for HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\ProfileList
10. In the left pane, find the one that starts with S-1-5..... and ends with .BAK; if you don't find one, skip to step 15
11. Right click it and click Rename, then change the .BAK to .BK
12. Right click the one with the same numbering but without the .BAK and add .BAK add the end
13. Right click the one that you renamed to .BK and clickRename, delete the .BK
14. Eventually, you have switched the .BAK from the end of the second entry to the first. That should probably fix your problem.
15. If you didn't find a .BAK then try this: Open Windows Explorer to C:\Users\Default\AppData\Local\Application Data
16. If you find another Application Data below the one you're on, then delete it. That should probably also fix your problem.
17. If you can't login in Safe Mode, then reboot and hit F8 until you see the menu again, then hit enter highlightingRepair Your Computer
18. Wait until all Windows Files finish loading, then hitNext when it asks keyboard language.
19. Try logging in here also, choose your user from the dropdown menu, and type the password, then jump to step 23
20. If that still doesn't work, then if you have your Windows Installation CD still, put it in and restart your computer.
21. Hit F12 until you see a menu of boot options, choose Boot from CD
22. Choose keyboard language then hit next. Find Repair Your Computer from a little below the center left.
23. Choose Open Command Prompt and type: net user administrator password /active:yes (here again you can specify a password)
24. Close the command prompt and click Restart and jump to step 5
To disable the administrator account, type this in an elevated command prompt: net user administrator /active:no

On a w2k-sp4 pc, my booting process starts looping with "Loading your personal parameters" when it reaches "Recording your parameters". That's the point where you hear the jingle which goes on indefinitely.

Since it's inside the opening of the User Session, probably that my profile is somewhat corrupt.

Safe Mode leads to the same loop.

FYI, I can access w2k files through an XP I have on that pc operating in dual boot mode.

Don't you have the option to just switch users as this would not log a user off(which would close everything) and instead it leaves them logged on and lets you select another user. I've had several programs/internet windows up and never had any problems with them closing just from switching users. Any further details you could provide would be wonderful, like do you have the option to switch users when you hit start -> shutdown?

My grandmother was recently hacked and she changed all her passwords herself (yay!). However she did not write down her new local user account password for her laptop.

I tried downloading OPHCrack, I burned it as an ISO file and put it on a DVD-R(only thing I had on hand) and i changed the boot order on her BIOS menu to had the DVD drive as the first priority. It does not run....I hear the disk drive moving, or spinning but the program does not run. Are there any other options or do I have to do a complete system restore to bypass this? Also if that is what I have to do how do I do that without being in her control panel?

Hello all I ve got a strange problem which has already seemingly stumped someone can t post a URL so go to forums dot spywareinfo dot com search under members for threepwood and it s called quot ie shutdown explorer process at on startup possible virus hijack of explorer quot but seeing Process settings user problem, windows XP and list as it seems less likely to be a spyware problem and more like a windows problem i thought i d post here and give up on the other thread Anyway here are the problems Process list doesn t fluctuate when it is opened On startup explorer shows a stupidly high cpu usage and doesn t change while the window is open Also if i leave the list open and open up another program for example notepad the program will start up but wont come up on the process list This happens only on the one account Process list and user settings problem, windows XP even if i open it in safe mode No other accounts seem affected until i try copying all my settings over to another account I need to know what the problem is and how to solve it so that no other accounts will be affected Another problem cropped up a few days ago My bookmarks list in IE seems to have gone Don t know why IE isn t my main browser so im not too upset although im sure i had some decent links saved which i cant remember now Also today the computer decided to say it had found and installed some new hardware my scanner when my scanner had been fuly installed around years ago System restore isn t possible because i have no points to restore to before this problem cropped up There do seem to be some problems with windows update running but it does run eventually Windows XP is fully up to date No new programs have been installed which could have caused the problem i ve already uninstalled some stuff i thought might be causing it and i ve got no idea what else to try OS is Windows XP SP no error messages come up Thanks in advance nbsp

Have you tried VNC? RealVNC - Download VNC? Free Edition 4.1
You could then fix mom's computer as well as accessing files. One caveat. Without a VPN it's not secure.

A:Windows 8.1 Unknown User Account Permission problem

Hi Jon, welcome to the Eight Forums.

The user profile with SID (security identifier) ending with 1001 is usually (not always) the first user account created when Windows is installed or a pre-installed Windows booted first time. In most cases this means it's your own user account.

You can check for which user account that SID belongs by giving the following command in Command Prompt:

Code:
wmic useraccount get name,sid

This example from my laptop, the first account I created when I installed Windows 8.1 was a local account called Admin which got the SID 1001:

SID ending with 500 belongs always to the built-in administrator account, SID ending with 501 to built-in Guest account, whether these two accounts are enabled and active or not. Other user accounts start from 1000.

What the above means is that you have most probably tried to remove your own account. Don't do that !

I had to reinstall W7 Pro X64 on my home PC to cure problems with sleep/hibernation.

After reinstalling, I found a single user account had been created named "DELL".

All my previous software (now stored in Windows.Old) referred to user name "Brian". So I changed the name of the DELL account to "Brian". But I then found that although the user folders are sometimes shown as "Brian", at others they are shown as "DELL".

How do I make the change of account name effective for all the relevant user folders? There is no facility to rename C:\Users\DELL; is there some other way?

Welcome Hershmab to the windows 7 forums.

The best advice I can give you is to create a userid for Brian making sure that it has the same security level as you used to have. Then log off dell and log on to brian and copy all the files to your new userid and then you can remove the Dell userid after your satisfied that everything is there.

i can't finish the setup process. i'm trying to create a "standard" account, but when i go to create a password for it, no matter how many characters and no matter how complex (uppercase, lowercase, numbers, etc) it will absolutely not accept anything as a password (and i am copying/pasting the password from notepad, so it is being typed correctly).

i checked all the secpol 'password policies', and there don't seem to be any interfering requirements.

i attached a screenshot, if it helps.

Hello,
it's weird but I can't change the password of a domain user when I'm logged on a domain pc with Windows 8.

I'm sure that the password mets the requirements (I also tested here https://www.microsoft.com/en-gb/security/pc-security/password-checker.aspx ), in fact if I change it from a domain controller I can do it without any problem.

But if I try to set the same on Win 8 I can't, the system tell me that the password doesn't meet the minimum requirements.
I also examined the event viewer but seems that the system didn't record any event related to.

Some suggestion about to solve it?

A few days ago, Windows Update Automatic updates installed an update on my computer called:

Windows Search 4.0 for Windows Vista (KB940157)

When I restarted my computer after this update I tried to log on and got this message:

The user profile service has failed the logon. User profile cannot be loaded.

I fixed this by booting into the F8 restore options on my Dell Laptop and used system restore to repair the problem
Today Windows Update Installed that same update again and the same problem arose which I again fixed with system restore.
Does anyone have any thoughts on this, like why should this update be causing my User Profile not to load ?

A:Windows Search 4 Update/User Profile problem

Hi, RockLobster, and welcome to the forums.
Hide the update in Windows Update so it won't try to install it.

Manually set a restore point - see System Restore Point - create

Manually download the Windows Search 4.0 update from Microsoft.

Install it

See if that causes the same problem - if so, revert to your newest System Restore.

I have hide all of my administrator account from login screen on windows7 by editing registry entry "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE \SOFTWARE \Microsoft \Windows NT \CurrentVersion \Winlogon\SpecialAccounts". Now I have only one power user account. I can't
login with admnistrative account because there is no switch user button on login screen. Even if I click on switch user button from start menu this will load the login screen with the power user and I don't have any option to change the username.

How can I get rid from this?

A:Windows 7 login screen switch user button problem

Hi,
I see two choices:
-by safe mode (pressing F8 before  windows load), you should be able to modify your regkey
-by right click maintening "shift" key on regedit then "run as different user" you should be able to enter your other credentials

A:Tricky Windows XP User Account/Profile Transfer Problem

You can't modify an existing account that way. When using "FAST", you need to create the account you need first, then the files/settings will be transferred to that.
Start over, don't creat any dummy accounts, create the accounts required (I assume they have different names?). RUn the "FAST" in the newly created accounts.

You need to check Control Panel, Power Options. (screenshot)

Note the tabs. In this dialog you set your options and they are set for the Power Scheme shown. In Laptops, there are usually 2 schemes listed, one for AC powered and a separate for Battery powered.

Desktop OR AC powered Laptop, the only thing you MAY want to turn off is your Monitor.

This concerns my mother's 2-year-old Toshiba laptop. My mother says that sometimes she is suddeny thrown out of her computer - when she is on the internet, or reading her e-mails etc.- whatever she is doing is interrupted without warning by a Windows Update screen telling her to wait and that Windows Update is updating her computer. Then the computer shuts down/reboots. And my mother has to start anew with whatever she was doing. Is this a Windows Update setting thing? My mother says that she has had this problem from the very start (she thinks so at least).

A:Solved: Windows Update problem: user is kicked out of system during installation

Update: okay, I checked my mother's laptop myself. It seems that there is a Windows Update feature my own laptop doesn't have: after downloading the updates, a nagging Windows Update box with a sort of timer/countdown function appears, asking whether the computer should be restarted, or the installation of the updates postponed. If neither of these options are chosen, then it will reboot automatically in 5 minutes. So...how do I get rid of that pesky box?
