I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hi there,

In Win-7, as an admin-user, it was easy to change the picture from another user. In Win-8 I'm only able to find where I can change my own picture. Can't I set it anymore for other users?

On my Windows 7 Ultimate (32-bit) machine I can't change my user account picture. I can't even change to one of the built-in pictures. My 64-bit machine doesn't have this problem.
When I attmpt to change the picture I'm told it isn't the right format. Again this applies to the built-in pictures as well as my jpeg photo. So I know the pictures are OK and can only guess the problem lies else where.
Both machines are members of a SBS 2011 domain.

Does anyone have any ideas?

First try sfc/scannow to see if Windows can repair any damaged or corrupted system files.
SFC /SCANNOW Command - System File Checker

If that doesn't work, try a repair install. If you do it correctly, you shouldn't lose any data.

Hello Tally,

You might check to see if it opened a window that may be hidden behind another opened window. Sometimes these windows are small and can easily be covered up.

If not, then try a sfc /scannow command to see if it can find and fix any bad system files that may be responsible. Afterwards try again.

Hope this helps,

Hi naman4797 and welcome to Eightforums!

I understand you have a problem with your Windows 8 copy. It seems that you can't access the pc settings.

Unfortunately the informatie you've given in your first post is a little meagre. Can you describe in more details what you wanted to do, what you've tried, what the error messages say (if any). Also I would like know if you use the offline or cloudbased profile.
And do you use Windows 8 on a desktop/ laptop/ tablet?

Is it possible to change the local user account picture at the windows logon screen via a command prompt.

Reason I need to do this is because I have about 200 workstations where the same exact local account needs to get created and a specific user account picture needs to be applied.

A:Change user account picture via command line

I don't know about copying just the picture. Log in as an Admin on the computer with the account you want to copy and Right click My Computer/Properties/Advanced/System Profiles. Highlight the Account you want to copy (you cannot be logged into the account you want to copy) and choose Copy To. Choose a Network Share. Then Copy it to each of the computers in question that you want to have the account on. this should also include the picture.. Maybe someone can write a batch file that would send it to all of the computers in the network in one click.

I've had a problem recently. I think it started after installing StyleXP to change my Windows visual style. I've since uninstalled StyleXP, but it has not resolved the problem.

My user picture that is usually at the top of the start menu is missing. In addition the green arrow icons and question mark icons in the User Accounts control panel are also missing (I just see red X's). I've tried changing my user picture in the control panel and it does not make a difference. I made sure to restore the default icons in StyleXP before uninstalling, but that didn't matter either.

I've since switched to Windowblinds and IconPackager. I've tried restoring default WinXP icons from IconPackager as well with no luck. Any ideas here? I'll upload some screenshots when I get back home, but I hope someone can point me in the right direction.

Hi all,

I am trying to move my users, and all future users folders (i.e. documents, desktop, appdata etc) from my SSD to a regular HD.

I followed a few tutorials and moved each folder by right clicking it and clicking the "Move" button on the location tab

After that, I editted the keys here:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\ProfileList

To use the HD. I also copied over the folders "Default", "Public", and "UpdatusUser" to the new location.

After restarting my computer everything works but my user has no picture. If I try and change the picture no pictures come up to be selected.

Have I missed a registry key or something? Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks in advance,

Having just learned from an OLD post here that renaming a user account apparently doesn't change the order in which the corresponding logon icons appear at startup -- due to the order being apparently determined by when each folder was originally created, which was when this computer was first opened back in 2011 -- I want to be able, after creating a new user account, to migrate data from the account whose name I changed. I'd been previously suggested to try User Profile Wizard from would this be a good idea, or can you suggest something different?

When a new user is created in Windows, either the first user when Windows is installed or any user later on, and the new user has signed in to Windows first time, the user profile is created and named. Any later username change does not change the name of the user profile.

An example, if my ex-wife had created a user account for me on a Windows computer she had most probably named it as "Idiot". If I then later on changed my username on that computer from "Idiot" to "Kari", my profile had remained as "Idiot".

Basically, the easiest way to change this is to create a new user account and profile with the preferred name, copy the personal files and folders from C:\Users\Wrong_Username folder to C:\Users\New_Username, and delete the user Wrong_Username completely.

In your case now you can try the method told in this tutorial: User Profile Folder - Change User Account Folder Name

Great find Flav! While I didn't resolve or have the exact issue 'Brooks-bilson's had, one of the comments on this blog entry ( did have a comment that worked.First I renamed the file "\Users\Default\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows Live\SqmApi\SqmData720896_00.sqm" to \Users\Default\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows Live\SqmApi\SqmData720896_00.sqm.bakInterestingly, this failed (bolded to help skimming folks).  However, actually moving the file out of the directory (effectively deleting it) did work.  This file was definately related to the problem, but exactly why W7 wasn't able to copy this (such as insufficient permissions or too long name error) is still unresolved.A little bit of information about the process Vista (and presumedly W7) goes through is well laid out in the referenced blog, and I recommend it for education.Unless it pops up again, I'm considering this issue closed and won't be monitoring it.  I hope everyone dealing with this W7 issue finds this helpful. Thanks again, Flav, for the find.D

Hello everyone, so to get right to it, i want to change the main window bars (Just add a picture to them) so they are not so boring, i have used themes before so know it is possible, but unsure of how to change this single item. So my question to you is, how would i go about doing this? Hope i have provided enough info, if not just ask what it is you want to know.

A:How to change the window picture.

It is quite easy actually...
There are to options, one is very easy the other is hard and complicated:
1. Go to (Browsing Windows 7 Utilities on deviantART) and download the them you like the most.

2. Create your own custom theme. This is a lot harder because you need various programs to do that and same of the components that come with the deviantart themes to apply them like Universal them patcher etc. etc.

I've been using Picture password, and I tried to change the picture today. When I clicked "choose picture" in Picture Password menu, it showed this message:

"There was a failure during the enrolment process. Please try again later."

The current picture password was still available, but I could not change it. I tried removing(that I regret) the picture password and to set a new one, but it showed the same message. Now I cannot use picture password. I tested with new accounts, local and ms both, but those didn't work.

What I don't understand is that I'd been using picture password(and was still able to log on with picture password before I removed it) without any problem, but suddenly it became corrupted or something. Refreshing is never an option, how can I solve this?

A:Cannot change/create Picture Password.

Likeliest Solution is the Least Wanted Solution
Sadly, the solution that has worked for those lucky enough to find a solution has been to use Windows 8's "System Refresh" feature, which saves your documents, but rather unfortunately not much else - and restores the system files. You'd have to reinstall programs and other personalizations afterwards.

But hey, we're a tech site, so we don't give up so easily.

Many posts are popping up on tech boards, with users having the exact same picture password trouble that you are facing. Exactly the same. Many have given up, and are hoping that Microsoft will have a hotfix or an update that will fix things. Others have been experimenting with strategies for repairing the problem - and very few have been successful.

What usually doesn't work:
Creating new accounts. The theory for this generally unsuccessful try is that the users profile is somehow corrupted. It seems to me that if the users profiles were that corrupted - then the pins and alphanumeric passwords wouldn't work either ... and I've yet to see a post where the problem was solved with by creating a new user & then moving data from the old account over.

Trying different picture formats: The setup for the picture passwords is so straightforward, I haven't seen anyone yet whose problem was at all related to picture format. Most users experiencing the problem, in fact, simply had their picture password suddenly produce the "enrollment" error: they were not trying to change a picture password, they hadn't removed an older one or tried to add a new one -- the current working password just suddenly produced the error.

Enabling Services ... what one user claims solved the picture password issue
An enticing but extremely frustrating post in a picture-password thread over on the Microsoft Community forums mentions success ... by enabling services (I'll assume with the Computer Management "Services" app) ... but [heavens sakes!] the user didn't keep track off the changes & doesn't know (or can't remember) which one (or ones) fixed the issue.
Here's a quote of the post:

Alright, so I dont know exactly what I did, but I went into SERVICES on my laptop and just started turning on any SERVICE that was disabled that seemed like a service picture password would need. Anything that dealt with user accounts, passwords, touchscreen services, etc. After that, I was able to set up both picture password and a pin. I wish I remembered which service I thought it was I started that allowed me to enroll. Sorry, I was on a mission due to the lack of response from Microsoft. I swear they posted the same sorry directions on every thread. Cya.

And here's a link to the entire thread:
NEED HELP! Windows 8 Picture Password Enrollment Failure and PIN - Microsoft Community

Following that lead, I looked around for likely suspects in the Services list. One that caught my eye was Credential Manager. I was a little surprised to see that it is not an Automatic service - by default it apparently is set to Manual. Some login programs and services depend on Credential Manager, such as those systems that come with fingerprint readers, or facial recognition readers. Such login systems require Windows Biometric Services to be running ... and one of the services it depends on is Credential Manager. --- While I couldn't find anything linking either of those services to the Picture Password feature, I imagine that it shouldn't hurt to try turning one or both of those services on - at least just long enough for testing purposes - and see if Picture Password works again.

How can I change lock screen background windows 10 by my picture each time I login or each day? Although I like Bing?s picture but I also want to use my picture.

A:Can I change lock screen win 10 by my picture every day?

Settings > Personalization > Lock screen
You can choose a Background here. Windows spotlight will show images that Microsoft has chosen. Picture and Slideshow let you choose your own picture(s).
You can also open a photo in the Photos app, click the three dots in the top right, Set as, and then Set as lock screen.

For some unknown reason, I can't change my desktop picture. When I go into the Display Settings, everything in the Desktop tab is grayed out. I can still use the customize desktop button and the position drop-box, but I can't acutally select an image.

I've tried going through the registry at HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\System, but none of this helped. I had at one stage lost all the tabs, but I managed to retrieve them through the registry.

It's not urgent that I get the desktop tab working, it's just really annoying. If anyone has any ideas that would be great.

You know how folder icons in Vista display a preview of the folders' contents? My User Folder inside C:/User, the topmost folder that contains folders such as Contacts, Desktop, Documents...etc, is displaying an image that is not in the folder. In fact, that image file shouldn't even exist in my computer as it is only the album art image of a mp3 file. I've done a search and took for hidden files, but couldn't find anything. I've also try messed with the settings in Properties/Customize, and tried to restore the icon to default but the image remains there. The only thing that makes the image disappear temperary is when I create an jpg file called folder.jpg and place it inside the User Folder, then folder.jpg gets displayed instead. But as soon as I delete folder.jpg, the original image appears again. Is there a hidden file or something that I'm not aware of?

If you have a restore point dated before this available, then you could do a system restore with it to undo and fix this.

The behavior of my viewer recently changed and, while a small change, it is annoying.

How I typically used it and how it worked for me...

In a pictures folder, I would right-click on a JPG and I would have full-screen view of the picture along with the buttons that would allow me to go forward, backward, rotate, launch picture editor, etc.

How it now works...

The buttons have disappeared and I cannot figure how this change occurred. Almost like I accidentally hit some configuration settings. I can only navigate forward/backward by using the arrow/cursor keys.

By using the filmstrip view, I can get a smaller version of what I used to have, but I prefer the other.

Hope this makes sense. Any insights? By the way, am running a current HP Media Center Edition computer using XP.

Thanks much.

A:How to change the picture for the built-in admin account?

Best practice is to not use the built in Administrator account for general use. Create an admin level account for daily use and leave the built in account for emergencies. If you have only one account and for some reason you cannot log into it you will have no access, no easy way to solve the problem. Having an alternate account makes this much easier.

I have changed my login screen background picture using Windows 10 Login Screen Changer (available at the MyDigitalLife forums). Unfortunately, the option to Disable User Account picture won't work for me, so I had to delete all the copies of my account pic in the 'UserAccountPictures' folder, so that my login background image doesn't show my account pic.
This also removes the account pic from the top of my Start menu, my User Account Profile, and online at all Microsoft sites.

There MUST be a way to enable an account picture everywhere EXCEPT on the login screen ...? I'm not adverse to editing the registry, or changing system files, if need be. I've been a computer enthusiast since the mid '80s, and I want my OS to do what I want it to do, not what the 'mighty' Microsoft deems to be the options I should be allowed to tinker with.

hi guys! i am currently using windows 7 home premium 32 bit and having problem with changing size of user account picture.

what it is is when i change the 128 x 128 picture's size to 64 x 64 and set it as user account picture and see the log on screen, it doesn't actually shrink. instead what i am getting is a blurry version still with the size of 128 x 128.

it seems that windows 7 has a fixed setting on that. and i need your help!

any contribution would be appreciated. thanks!

A:changing size of user account picture?

Not really understanding why this is an issue for you.... that being said.
The image will always be that default size though, I'm not aware of a way to change it.
Whether you use a 64pixel or a 8megapixel digital camera image it's going to show the same size there.

Hello, is this possible? Thanks.

A:Remove User picture from start menu?

You will need the program Restorator to do this get it -=> Here
You will also need the HexEditor VXI32..

1. Open the mssytles file in Restorator 2007 Extract variant > normal
2. Open the normal file in VXI32
3. Ctrl + G
4. Enter 0144c8 in decimal and press OK
5. Replace 01 with 00
6. Save
7. Drag normal file back into restorator replacing the original
8. Save
9. Restart themes service

Hi there people!!!!!!

I was wondering if there is a way in which you can change the size of the user picture in the logon screen... What I mean here... is that, no matter the picture you use for it, the logon screen shows it at a "fixed" size... but sometimes, it is shown in a little frame, while in other PC's, you can see it bigger... I don't know if it's matter of resolutions... I hope I'm getting understood...

Is there a way to control or change that?

Thanks in advance people.

See ya!!!

A:Logon screen user picture size

Not without a funky res hack.
Which logon screen do you mean? There is the classic and the new one...

I did also notice that the user pic is a little larger if you're logged in and have locked the workstation.

Hi 7forum!

This is my last resort, so please help me!
I have after a long time searching ended up here on this forum.

What I want to do is simply to remove the picture & frame on my login screen, only the password, my name, switch user should be left on the screen.

To clarify, I don't want to:
Remove the whole login screen.
Remove password protection.
Remove anything else except for that picture and frame.

Thats pretty much it, I would be really thankful if somebody could help me with this because I'm close to changing to linux just to get rid of it .

Thanks in advance!

A:One last try, Get rid of User Account picture on login screen.

I'm thinking a transparent .png picture would take care of the profile picture. As for the frame... that's above my pay grade right now

I have been modify my own theme for a week now, and i would love to modify user picture and frame form start menu, can you help me please how to mod it. Thanks.

A:How to modify user picture from start menu, thanks.

I would imagine you would need to create and edit your own image first, and then just browse to it to use it for your user account.

Does anyone know of a way, or an app, which would allow me to have my user account picture update every the login / lock screen is displayed?

Basically I have a folder full of images that I like to use as my account picture, but instead of changing it every week or whatever, I'd like for it to change every time I login, so next time the login/lock screen is shown, it's different..

Does anyone know of anything like this? Or would be able to make a simple script to do it?

EDIT: Ok I've made a script which updates the user profile .bmp file, but changing that file does NOT update the user profile picture if it's a local user (it works for domain users apparently).. Any idea where the actual edit needs to be made / what cache needs dropping?

Thanks for any help!

A:Auto-changing user account picture?

Hmmm. I fired up Process Monitor (PM) and was not able to see the step(s) that you need to do to get the desired results. You might want to spend more time on it than I did. Filter PM on Explorer and record/monitor the events that take place when you manually change a user's picture via Control Panel > User Accounts.

The profile bmp that you mentioned can be deleted if this is for a local user account - even after a restart, the user image is coming from somewhere else.

If you really want to dig into this issue - you can run PM from one user account while you log off and on to another user account. PM should show you where W7 is getting the image from for the log on screen.

Here's one solution that i have developed for this specific problem.
Place the .exe wherever you want, then run it once to set it as an autostart item for Windows.
The user picture will vanish from existence.

It will only re-appear if you change the Theme or if you reposition the taskbar around your desktop, but then again you can manually run the .exe once more.

Works for Windows Vista, Windows 7.

A:Remove User Picture from Start Menu

Thank you. Too bad it doesn't play nice with vertical task bars. Since this exe doesn't remove the margin where the user picture used to be and in vertical view the entire user picture is 'inside' the right pane of the start menu, you get a large amount of blank space in the right pane. Oh well.

Does anyone share my problem of not being able to change my display picture, despite knowing how it is done. I get the same message that the it is not a valid image file, despite having been used in older versions of Messenger. The option to use a webcam does not function either, nor insert a Dynamic picture. Everything else functions, but not being able to change from the wlm icon picture. Very strange. Does anyone have the answer please.

A:Messenger (2009 ewill not let me change display picture

Try using a GIF picture. Or a BMP.
