My latest "Important" Windows Updates notification

Q: My latest "Important" Windows Updates notification

This a.m. I see there are a bunch of "Important" Win8.1 updates recommended (my Win update settings are to notify me, but to allow me to choose whether or not to download & install them.

Have there been any known issues / problems with these updates?

Preferred Solution: My latest "Important" Windows Updates notification

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/directdownload.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hi,
Why do we get the option "Windows Updates. Important updates are available. Go to PC settings to install them" on the logon screen? Need to remove this option but without altering the update functionality. We are using SCCM for windows update.
Can you help how to remove it by GPO or any other option for large scale systems (5000+). At present the user cannot install the updates as it has been restricted. Attached the screen shot also.

A:Any way to hide "you have hidden important updates" WGA nag banner in Windows Update?

Description of Windows Genuine Advantage (WGA)

It's pretty basic. The core of it is, they are a company that sells computer Operating System software and don't want to be ripped off. And to prevent rip-offs from updating beneficial security and other support they provide FREE, they require you run the WGA.

That isn't unreasonable.

Don't like it? Get Linux or whatever.

A:Windows Update loops with a "Restart your computer to install important updates"

Thanks Alex
I had already tried the steps in the post you linked.
In the end I have had to reinstall Windows 7 over the top (keeping all settings) and this has fixed the issue with Windows Updates.
It is frustrating that I could not find a solution as I do not like glossing over the issues without first finding a solution but unfortunately it was not my pc and time was against me.
Thanks for all the replies.

Hi, tonight the update for upgrading to Windows 10 was downloaded even though I didn't reserve a copy of Windows 10 and I'm filling happy about Windows 7. I've uninstalled the update KB3035583 from my computer and hided it from being updated in the future. Still the notification "Upgrade to Windows 10-Get started" remained on the windows update screen. Is there any way to get rid of it as well so that I wouldn't click by mistake the get started button? Thank you.

Greetings Seven Forums Gurus and apologies for the TL ad "Restart to important your infinitum - install computer updates" DR nature of this "Restart your computer to install important updates" - ad infinitum post Trying to put all the relevant "Restart your computer to install important updates" - ad infinitum information in So a problem has come up from a little old lady customer here She got hit by the non-voluntary Windows upgrade last week - caught it somewhere before it did the final install and who knows what she did exactly but before I got a chance to look at the computer she had somehow managed to revert to At that point I ran the GWX toolbox and canned the upgrades but by then the damage was done and the machine won't check for updates and won't stop saying it "Restart your computer to install important updates" - ad infinitum hasn't finished installing the last update Notice it says never checked for and never installed updates - these are probably as a result of some of the stuff I have tried It also says quot You receive updates - for Windows only quot although there is no option on the settings page to check for other products' updates Incidentally I have also tried changing the settings to Never install updates and removing both check-marks - makes no difference Under Update History the only item listed is Hotfix for Windows KB that's the System Update Readiness Tool which I ran manually today If I click quot check for updates quot it very quickly pops up a little window to say quot Windows Update cannot currently check for updates because you must first restart the computer quot blah blah blah Well it's been restarted more than a dozen times with all the various things I've tried OK so what have I tried Amongst other things and not necessarily in this order it's been a couple of days of hacking around I tell you - Microsoft Fixit twice I think - Tweaking com quot Windows Repair AIO quot - Manually resetting update components Otion from tutorial - SURT as mentioned above - sfc scannow I don't know why I bothered with this one I've never seen it do anything - in this case it reported no errors nothing to do - possibly some other stuff I have forgotten now Every time Windows Update - restart your computer And of course the nag box that gives you the option of postponing for minutes hour or hours The System amp Application event logs show no errors or even warnings that look even vaguely relevant to me There is no Windows Update error number to quote Just refuses to check for updates The CBS log folder consists of four CbsPersist CAB files of between and MB that don't compress and one of about MB None of them are recent four days old and older - any point in uploading any of them I have included the current CBS log file as well as the quot uneventful quot SUR logfiles So any helpful suggestions will be gratefully accepted PS I would have reverted Windows to a previous state if there were any but alas

Hi Chris,
Try this for starters.

1. Close all the open windows.
2. Click the "Start" Button, click "All programs", and click "Accessories".
3. Right-click "Command Prompt" and click "Run as administrator".
4. In "Administrator: Command Prompt" window, type in " net stop WuAuServ " (without the quotes) and press Enter.
Note: Please look at the cmd window and make sure it says that it was successfully stopped before you try to rename the folder.
5. Click the "Start" Button, in the "Start Search" box, type in " %windir% " (without the quotes) and press Enter.
6. In the opened folder, look for the folder named "SoftwareDistribution".
7. Right-click on the folder, select "Rename" and type " Sdold " (without the quotes) to rename this folder.
8. Still in "Administrator: Command Prompt" window, type the command " net start WuAuServ " (without the quotes) in the opened window to restart the Windows Updates service.

For over hours Windows Update has said quot Restart your computer to install important updates quot yet every time I restart and check Windows Update it is still saying quot Restart your computer to install important updates quot Before I deleted SoftwareDistribution to try and solve matters the update history showed a security update KB which has been showing as quot pending quot for the whole of this period despite numerous restarts but never shows as quot successful quot or quot failed quot It just stays stuck at quot pending quot It doesn't appear in issue important updates" to your "Restart computer install installed updates but when I try to install it manually it says it's already installed SURT installed hotfix KB SFC scan didn't find any problems Microsoft Fix it said Cryptographic services could not be stopped I've tried to upload the CBS folder as per your posting instructions but it's over MB zipped and it didn't upload PS I don't know if this is relevant but this update KB relates to a vulnerability when Remote Desktop Protocol is enabled When I went to the dialogue box to check if RDP is enabled system advanced system settings remote the check boxes relating to RDP are missing All I have is a check box for remote assistance so I don't know for sure if RDP is enabled or disabled

Hi,

I have several Updates that fail; 3 of which are classified as "Important." The updates get applied, I reboot, then after reaching 99%, I get the error message, "We would not complete your updates. Undoing changes."

KB2962409, 2967917, 2981580, and all versions for English Input Personalization Dictionary (e.g., 2881553) fail.

I connected with the Answer Desk and they told me to try the two-button reset (Volume Up + Power button) and then after reboot, try the updates again. Needless to say, I rolled my eyes, complied and, of course, it didn't work and I'm getting the same result.

The Answer Tech also told me that the 4 KBs I mentioned above will be pulled and replaced in a few days. I am skeptical but, regardless, I am still stuck with not being able to get those updates installed.

I'm running Windows 8.1 on a Surface Pro 2.

Any ideas? Thanks!

A:"Important" updates to install on vista?

Check Computer properties and make sure that it says you have SP2. That does sound like a lot of updates, but then there have been some almost every "Update Tuesday", so the number may vey well be quite high.

You may not want to download and install them all at one time, however. Pick a bunch and install, and then some more later. It's not likely that problems will arise, but if you have smaller batches, you'll have an easier time finding any that cause trouble.

Then, be smart. After you get it all set up, back it up. Your hard drive will fail, more infections will come along, and you'll be doing this all again if you are not prepared. Periodic updates to your backup will keep it recent and you can keep the first one as your "factory restore". You can even merge your restore partition with your main one for more space and make an image of that for your "factory restore". Since it will have all your programs, updates, and files, it will save you a lot of time for recovery.

Free drive backup software (imaging, cloning, and archiving - backups can be created on a second hard drive, internal or external, or on DVD's, or BluRay disks. One BluRay disk will hold most peoples' entire system drive's backup at 25 GB's using compressed images, 50 GB's double-layer):

Paragon Backup & Recovery 2012 (Recovery boot CD or USB key)
Macrium Reflect (Free)
O&O Disk Image Express or (mirror)
Easeus Todo Backup
ODIN (open-source)
Redo Backup & Recovery (Boot CD)
Clonezilla Live (A bootable CD of Debian with Clonezilla.)
Drive Image XML
PING (Partimage is not Ghost) (Boot CD with option Clam Antivirus)
Partition Saving
Clonezilla
Passmark OSFClone (Bootable, cloning only)

There are also many commercial products with more features.

Hi Looking for insight advice re KB According to Infoworld it was quot Optional quot in May but I was not offered it then This KB3054476 "Important"/"Recommended"/"Optional" offered as week it was offered as quot Important quot and quot Recommended quot but only for one of my Win boxes I have read the MS KB article as well as THIS FORUM THREAD the latter of which includes a report of a BSOD due to this particular update However there isn't much out on the web about it And most of the discussion about it is overly technical for me And I am confused as to why it was previously offered as quot Optional quot but now is quot Important quot KB3054476 offered as "Important"/"Recommended"/"Optional" or quot Recommended quot I don't think I quot need quot it as I have no webcam on this box And I don't like KB3054476 offered as "Important"/"Recommended"/"Optional" to tempt fate by fixing things that are not broken So questions Is it safe to install Is it really necessary important Or would I be OK to hide it Thanks very much in advance

A:KB3054476 offered as "Important"/"Recommended"/"Optional"

The status of updates changes with circumstances.
If an update isn't relevant, it won't be offered at all.
If however it's relevant but the related software is not apparently in use, it may be 'optional' - and gravitate to 'Recommended' or 'Important' if the related software is in use.
It can also be promoted through the hierarchy by MS depending on feedback through WU and error-trapped feedback.

If you have (and use) a webcam, then it's probably best to install the update.

I have used the setting "check for updates, but let me choose whether to download and install them" for a long time. I used to get a notification as soon as new updates were available, but at some point this year the notifications stopped coming - so i need to manually go to control panel/windows update and check to see if new updates are available.

I've checked that 'windows update' is set to 'show icon and notifications' in 'Notification Area Icons'

any ideas on how to get the notifications again?

thanks

So I have this weird thing happening in my relatively fresh install of Windows 10.
Whenever I search for "Check for Updates" or "Windows Update settings" on the search box of the start menu, I get the results that I want but if I press enter or try to click on those results nothing happens.. As far as I know I can click all others search results but those, and maybe others related to windows update.

I can still get updates by going to Settings>Update & Security though.

In my other computers this works fine, and as far as I can tell all the updates are done.
From what I've searched around other people seemed to have a similar issue where they couldn't acess the settings at all which isn't my case. Still I tried the sfc/ scannow that a lot of users seemed to recommend but no results.

.............. Still I tried the sfc/ scannow that a lot of users seemed to recommend but no results. .....................

Please clarify what did you mean by "no results".

When sfc /scannow is completed, it will give you one of the following 3 reports....................(paraphrasing)

1. No integrity violation.
2. Found corrupted files and repair is successful.
3. Found corrupted files but unable to repair some of them.

Which one of the above is applicable to you ?

Hello guys,

I don't know what I did, but nothing happens when I click on those two things in the search bar:

View image: wtf

I reinstalled Windows a few hours ago, and IIRC pressing those with the mouse lead somewhere. Now when I click on them, it does nothing. I have to type in "Settings", so I can click on the actual Windows App. Then I can navigate to those settings. IIRC those results were "clickable".

Can somebody help?

Thanks in advance!

I am the admin on the PC however this PC points to a In-office "WSUS server" to normally get its update
Is there a work around to this that I could add to my local group policy or registry?
I have been under Group Policy Object Editor -->Computer Configuration --> Administrative Templates -->

but seen nothing that would allow to override this error

In Windows XP, fully updated, I have several folders full of mp3's and want to see the bit rate and duration. I right click on a column heading and select "Bit rate". I then click on "More..." so I can get to "Duration", and I select that one too.

But all the figures in the "Duration" column appear to be in "hours" and "minutes", so I see "00:04" or "00:03", but what I want is "minutes" and "seconds".

Any thoughts as to how to change this?

A:Windows failed to conect to " system event notification service"

This seems to be a common problem, I am now also experiencing the same.
I have Win 7 Home Premium 64. Did chkdsk /r, defragged, tried sfc/scannow scanned for viruses and even tried reseting winsock.
My aero themes are greyed out, when trying to fix it with MS fixit it errors out.
It takes a long time to boot and then says "failed to connect to System event notification service"

One search on google will show this is a major problem, so why does MS not come out with a fix.
This seems to be the biggest frustration with Win 7 compared to XP, lack of support from MS.

Today I booted up my laptop to get this screen - my desktop without an aero theme and the error message on-screen.

Nothing unusual happened last time I used my PC. No installation or updates that I am aware of.

The computer cannot shut down properly now either, it just hangs after the desktop icons are gone. I am forced to hard shutdown.

When I view my notification area icons, I see an entry for "host process for windows tasks". I believe it is related to either rundll32 or task host, both of which are all in their legitimate folders.

is there any reason why this would be here? It is set to show only notifications. What notifications would taskhost make?

Hi there
It seems that yet another build (7061) might hit "The usual places" soon -- this is "reputed" to be near RC1 but not near enough so this build needs testing (7061) as well.

Looks like Microsoft has quite a bit more work to do before the actual RC1 however - -- now delayed until May (at least).

Not sure what the problem is as the Beta testing seem to be going fine.

Oh well here we go again -- good practice installing and upgrading OS'es.

A:"Windows Explorer" listing in Notification Area

Hello Spaumi and welcome to the Forum. I'd suggest opening 7 in Safe Mode and running a full scan for viruses and spyware.

Safe Mode

A lot of folks on the Forum recommend the free MSE or Avast. If you decide to use either of these it's recommended you uninstall any other software so there won't be any conflicts. (MSE and Avast can run together without conflict.) A secondary on-demand scanner is Malwarebytes free.

Once you've run all the scans try using System Restore to roll back your machine to just prior to when the problems started. If System Restore works I'd run all the scans one more time just to be sure.

System Restore

As to the lock icon you're seeing, I'm really not sure what that might be.

This is the easiest way to get rid of the icon. You can right-click on the date/time in Taskbar system tray and select "Customize notification icons" option. It'll open a new window. Now look for GWX (Get Windows 10) entry in the list and change its value to "Hide icon and notifications" using the drop-down box.

Apply the changes and it'll hide the White Windows flag icon in Taskbar notification area.

A:Get rid of that pesky "Get Windows 10" notification in the taskbar.

I tried this before accepting the free upgrade & it only worked until the computer was turned off or restarted. Others on here have reported the same thing in other threads. This thread has another fix that you can try. It's not as easy as hiding the icon but the outcome is the same, you'll never have to see or deal with that icon ever again. https://forums.techguy.org/threads/how-to-remove-windows-10-upgrade-notice.1149394/

Hello All,

I was referred here by NeonFx from the TechGuy Security forum. He had me run a slew of anti-virus/anti-spyware diagnostics. According to NeonFx my system is currently infection free and he states the problem lies elsewhere.

He also had me run the Windows Update FixIt tool in both Default and Aggressive mode - both of which did not fix the problem. So what is the problem??

PROBLEM:

When I run the install Windows updates, the updates do not install, and I receive the following message (not verbatim, but close):

"Some updates were unable to be installed..."

This problem "came out of no where" and there has been no suspicious activity prior to it starting other than an IE7 redirect rootkit that NeonFx helped me remove (if I recall correctly an infection of agp440)...

Stumped, stumped and stumped...

A:How to fix "not responding" problem in all programs and "lost updates"

Welcome to the Seven Forums.

That temp file that you mentioned, is it in the root of the system drive?
In other words is it located here: C:\1ee10074....

If that is where it is, then it could be from a .NET update. They do not always remove that randomly named folder. Don't delete it just yet, go inside of it (say continue to the permissions security pop ups). If you find several folders with 4 numbers for the name, then it is probably from an update. Those numbered folders are for different languages. You can delete the folder if you want or just leave it. The folder is not the cause of your problems.

Try a scan with this:
http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/w...fender-offline

Then try this:

It started a couple weeks ago, I would hear the "FLOOP" sound associated with a windows notification (i.e., the same sound as when the lower-right hand corner tell you that "you have unused shortcuts on the desktop" or that some update is available...

But there was no accompanying message.

It happens now about every half hour-ish..

As far as I can tell, there isn't any other problem with my system.

Anyone ever experience this?

A:I'm getting the notification "floop" sound with no notification

The sound is not associated with another function as well?
Try disabling the association.
(You can do that in Control Panel -> Sounds And Audio Devices -> "Sounds" tab -> scroll down the list and look for "System Notification" -> and associate it with [None].
See if the sound still plays every half hour. This way we will know it is definitely a notification and not some other action.

From here you will have to look at all your programs that are running when the sound plays again. Since it plays every half hour it must be some sort of schedule (Maybe a program is trying to update? Antivirus maybe?)

I feel that I should be more observant. In Control Panel > Sound > Playback > Select the Realtek device > Properties > Levels there are the exact changes I need. I don't know why I didn't notice until now. Could explain why there was no "Show Meters" button in this release but I thought Windows 7 also had the same leveling and there was the leveling in Dell Audio as well.
I'm still going with a new sound card from Creative however, seen a super nice $70 one that looks awesome and seems to have features to match.

Hi there,
Can someone please help to shed some light on this, or possibly fix this issue?
I've been trying for ages to get my parents computer to download and install updates.
It's running 7 Home Premium 64 bit with SP1.
The Windows Update page shows that Windows could not search for updates, which resulted in the error 8007370B
The link on that page to get help for this error has no results.
The system update readiness tool failed to fix the issue
sfc /scannow in an elevated command prompt results in the error message
Windows resource protection could not perform the requested operation.
I also tried to force WSUS offline updates, but ended up having to remove the temp admin account and cancel the updates when that failed.

As this update can't presently be installed and it's a PITA when going to Sleep as I have to choose between Install Updates and Sleep, how can I get this update to go away without installing it so that I can get to my closing functions without having to muck with Install Update now?

A:Deleting an "important" but unwanted window's update alert?

Hmm - I'd be inclined to uninstall Skype completely, and reinstall from a fresh download.

However, before doing anything that drastic....

There is a folder named "Important" in my folders and I'm not sure if I made it or they did, but it will not delete and it copies every single email I get. Why do I need duplicates of all my mail?

It's a pain because now I have to empty deleted, junk, inbox, and sent mail and this one.

Hello I have two gb hard drives in my computer C and F The F drive seems to have a very bad problem files folders occasionally just disappear without a trace and with no apparent hard Files ones) "important" disappear from (only drive! way to recover them The worst part is the files that go seem to only be ones I've been recently using since I use my most Files (only "important" ones) disappear from hard drive! important files most often that means my important files and ONLY important ones get randomly deleted This has happened about times since I got the laptop Here is the worst part Just today I went to open a solution in Visual Studio The solution contained about projects minor ones and very large ones which I have been working on for several months When I went to open the solution the three minor projects were fine but the two large ones were completely gone folders and all files from the hard drive These are extremely important and it is critical that I recover them Does anyone know of any software which is good at recovering lost corrupted fragments of files on a hard drive Alternatively is there any software that literally allows you to do a string search on the raw bits of the hard drive If I can search for some text in the files perhaps I have a chance at recovering some data Also I need to know if it's possible to do a raw copy of an entire partition to another partition literally byte for byte not just existing files I have two gb partitions on the F drive and maybe if I can copy the one with the lost files to the other I will have a better chance of recovering since if the files get overwritten I'll still have them on the other partition Thanks in advance for ANY help with this as it is very urgent

I have found other postings on various websites that have described this exact problem I m having so I know this isn t a complete one working Windows and file not Windows default icons type" Updates "unkown of a kind fluke Windows default "unkown file type" icons and Windows Updates not working but have not found any solutions anywhere Almost all the icons on my system are showing the default icon for an quot unknown file type quot This is happening for all Office documents PDF files and also shortcuts to these files Some file types have retained their correct icon but not many For applications that are Windows default "unkown file type" icons and Windows Updates not working affected it is affecting both shortcuts to documents and to the application itself - for example all MS Word documents on the desktop as well as the shortcut to the program in the quot start quot menu However the original program file at C Program Files Microsoft Office Office winword exe shows the correct icon All of the icons still work fine - both a document and a shortcut to a document will call up the program and open the appropriate file in the application If that were the only problem I could live with it However at the same time that this happened I m finding that most Windows Upates won t install and other programs as well - like an update to the Adobe PDF reader All the updates that will install have been installed The rest say quot downloaded ready to install quot on the Windows Update page but when I try to install them it says quot installation failed quot at the end Most just fail to install but some - like Silverlight - throw a message during installation saying that it needs to find the msi installer file In the case of Silverlight if I try to install from the WindowsUpdate website it asks for the location of the Silverlight msi before it can continue I ve searched my entire system and it doesn t exist However if I go to quot add remove programs quot and try to uninstall the current version it won t uninstall - I get the same message Lastly I tried going to the Silverlight website and downloaded an entirely new exe installer to run Still no luck For Adobe I get a message that an update to the Adobe Reader is available It downloads but then I get an error during install and it aborts I get a reminder every few days about the update but it never installs I have tried a system restore to a point in time before this problem first happened with no success I ran a quot checkdisk quot and told it to fix issues and I ve tried running a quot registry cleaner quot program No luck with anything I ve done Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated nbsp

A:Windows default "unkown file type" icons and Windows Updates not working

HalfBakedLunatic, For the icon problem right click your Desktop, choose Properties, under the Settings tab change the Color Quality from 32 bit to 16 bit, click Apply/OK. Now go back and change the Color Quality from 16 bit to 32 bit, click Apply/OK. This will rebuild the iconcache.db file and may correct the icon problem.

I'm not sure that resetting WU would actually cure your problem - it sounds to me more of a systemic problem, possibly to do with one of the involved technologies (scripting, NET, etc.).

My wuapp.exe has TrustedInstaller as owner, with only Read and Execute permissions for users and Admins.

On one computer, the registry updates are shown under the Windows boot logo like "Applying update XXXXX of YYYYY" followed by the registry key. On another nothing is shown...

Hello all. Last night I shut off my Dell computer with Windows 7 home premium. It started an update that I believe had 29. Later I realized I needed to look at something and turned it back on. It started the "Configuring Windows updates do not turn off your computer" but it has gotten hung up at 41%. The little circle is still spinning but has been like this since 11pm last night. I have not done anything yet.

Thank you for any help you can give me!

A:Computer hung up on "Configuring Windows updates 41%" since last night

ABout the only thing you can do now is force a shutdown, holding in the power button for about 5-6 seconds.
Boot to Safe Mode, and let it attempt to either repair the system or complete the updates.
Hopefully you'll then be able to boot to normal mode, and install any that didn't work this time around.

Hello again, friends.

Ok so here's my new issue. I got a new hard drive and successfully installed Windows 7 on it. I temporarily slaved the old OS hard drive so that I could copy some files from it because the drive was failing.

My issue is that when I check for updates, it doesn't go beyond the "checking" and it basically times out. Seems odd... has anyone else had this happen and what do I do? You don't think that maybe the computer is confused because the OS still remains on the drive that is temporarily slaved do you? One odd thing is that I checked the update history and clearly some went on there. So I don't know. Help?

You guys rock. Thanks for helping me out with the last issue.

i have a feeling it was the update for the x64 based systems. that is the most general optoin, as the others refer to windows defender and the security updates

now you have an idea of what caused it, do what you can.
otherwise, its the restore

I've tried some solutions to this rare situation and nothing.

I mean the following:
By the way, I've noted that:
1.- In 'View-Choose Details' window, there is "Name" option only (may be this is normal):
2.- But, in 'Tools-Folder Options' window, in the 'View' tab, option "Always show menus" (normally in "Files and Folders" section, second position) has disappeared!:

I didn't pressed the "Restore Defaults" button because I think this is for other purpose, isn't it?

So, I don't know what to do... I wonder someone of you may give me a hand to solve this...
In other words, please help me!

Thanks in advance,

Hello All,

This is yet another issue with Windows Update on 7; I recently (a couple of weeks or so ago) upgraded my father's computer to Windows 7 and he loves it.

However, whenever either of us try and use Windows Update, it sits there for hours and hours on "Installing Updates 1 of 2."

Does anybody have any ideas where I could look as to why this is happening?

I will post more information on this when I can find more detailed account of what's going on with 7.
Thanks,

A:Windows Update on 7 stalls while "Installing Updates (2/3)" on AMD64 m

you could try :-

go to services (click start and type SER

stop windows update service

go to c:/windows/software distribution/data store

empty this folder

restart/start windows update service

open windows update and it should be red indicating never searched for updates
then try again

also check installed programs and make sure what your trying to install hasn't already automatically installed when you first installed Windows 7

just an idea

This is an on-going problem and I am at my wits end.

What I have: Toshiba laptop with Windows 7 Ultimate SP1, 64bit, no additional software installed since I could never get past the update issue.

The symptom: went attempting to run windows update it says "searching for updates". It never stops "searching for updates" until I close or end the program. I have let it run for 2 days straight.

What I have tried:
1. Did the "clear the cache" fix, (stopped BITS and windows update services, deleted SoftwareDistribution folder, then restarted), no change
2. Attempted to install updates manually, it hangs on "searching for updates on this computer".

3. Even when trying to install the system update readiness tool does not work.

Any suggestions are welcome.

Thank you

A:Windows update not working, hangs while "searching for updates"

I decided to start over, even installed a new, factory fresh hard drive (I have planned to do this in the future and thought this would be a good time to do it).
I installed Windows 7 Ultimate, 64bit, SP1 from an original windows disk.
I activated windows successfully and started windows update.
It does the same thing as before, just says "searching for updates" and never does anything else.
Could it be my hardware? I have a good fast internet connection to most sites. Memory tested good.
No driver issues seen.
I did notice when I installed windows, all the window colors were set to red.
I don't remember seeing that before. I changed the color to the default blue color.

Thank you for your continued support.

To whomever can help:

I was given a computer for my daughter. It was JUST installed with Windows 7 home Premium sp1 when we got it. When I have tried to check for updates, it gets stuck- even if I leave it for hours & hours, it still continues to "check for updates" (& I have very fast internet). I have ran microsofts windows update troubleshooter, but it still does the same thing. Please help.

Thank you for your time & assistance.

Hi
I've been trying to set up a few second hand laptops for a charity youth club. One went without a hitch, one won't update Windows at all.

It's running Windows 7 SP1, I've tried various fixes but nothing seems to be working.

I've followed the instructions on the post. Attached is my CBS log zip file. I don't have any error codes as it just sits on "Checking for Updates".

Interestingly the first time I ran the SURT it just sat for over 8 hours on "Checking for Updates" as well. Second time, after a power down & reboot it did it.

Any help would be greatly appreciated. This was meant to be a quick favour & now turning into a long job!

Thanks

Nick

A:"critical" updates slow netbook..Packard Bell dot..Windows 7 starter

There are some updates which are regarded as of overriding importance, and which ignore the settings - however, they are very few, and generally do not lead to any slowing of the system except at the first boot after install.
Exactly which updates are you talking about?

Hi together,
I have a virtual Windows 8 machine that had houndres of updates to install.
After finishing the updates and rebooting the system the machine stops (or takes very long time?) with "updating your system" 11% (for more than 12 hours).
For sure there is important data on the machine ;-).
I read about a problem with an old update (november)...
Any idea how to figure out if the machine is "only" very slow or how to proceed?

All right, I got it figured out - for Windows tablets, holding the Volume Down button while pressing the Power button will give you the Boot Options menu, so I used my 4-port USB hub (tablet has one micro USB port) and plugged in both a Windows 8 recovery

Hi everybody I am running in to a problem where the Windows Update is stuck on checking for updates now I have freshly upgraded a Windows machine from Enterprise to Professional with a new product key - which it did work activated as a Genuine But it might not be just the Windows Update any other software would be doing Update "Checking for on stuck Windows updates" the same thing as for Windows Update - checking for updates so I am just wondering if there is a one way click to solve this problem Everything else works except from the Windows Update what is doing is just checking for updates and it hangs on checking for hours and hours - so I had enough and I want to find a best solution that would work Now I am not quite sure if the Windows Update is taking time to get all the updates gathered in or it might be stuck But I don't know I can't really tell on what the computer is doing in the background Windows Update stuck on "Checking for updates" process During the research for finding this solution and I have came up with different solutions but I don't want to risk too much on registry or doing manual servicing including in with deleting a few files from the C drive downloading a few tweakers fixers applications such as Microsoft FixIt - but none of this solved the problem apart from being patient and wait The only thing I haven't done is doing a sfc scannow check disk clean up or reinstall Windows Professional and doing a disk check before startup I just want the Windows Update to work so that the computer is ready to receive updates before June and it can be ready to process and upgrade to Windows if possible This picture below shows the same problem to what is happening right now Thank you for reading Best Regards Ben

After running the Windows Update Diagnostic tool a few times, every time it runs it finds the same few errors and fixes them, but it also finds Windows Update Error 0x80070057 and is unable to fix it.

Any ideas?

Some optional updates are useful and should be installed, some like Bing related items, Silverlight aren't, since you don't mention the KB numbers it's really hard to answer that.

I installed an ocz vertex 4 ssd (256g model) into my msi gt70 laptop. A product key came with the laptop, and I've burned windows 7 to a disc. I made sure the ssd has priority in the BIOS too.

When I start up the installation, it gets to the "Installing updates" step, but doesn't progress any further, the laptop is effectively frozen on that step. I've tried re-installing a couple times now and it continues to get stuck on "Installing updates".

Do I need an active internet connection for this step by any chance?

A:Windows 7 64B installation stuck on "Installing updates"

Hello angrychair, welcome to Seven Forums!

You do not need 'active' internet to install.

Study the information and steps outlined in the tutorials linked below to sort through each in-turn and be sure to post back with any further questions you may have and to keep us informed.

If the installer is one you acquired perhaps the ISO file is bad and another will work; or if you burned it to DVD, another burn is needed, use ImgBurn at no greater than x4 speed with a verify. ImgBurn Free ISO Burning Software
If the PC is capable, add the installation files to a USB stick and boot that for the install. USB Windows 7 Installation Key Drive - Create

Hi,
Current issue: Windows 7 sp1 update stuck at "checking for updates" for more than a week
My computer: windows 7 professional sp1 installation originally
Last automatic checked and updated successfully: May 11, 2015
CCleaner cleaned up: once every week
Anti-virus: AVG for more than 10 years

Self - troubleshooting done so far but did not work:
1) CCleaner cleaned up & Disk cleanup under safe mode
2) Reset Update following this instruction: Windows Update - Reset
3) Temporarily turned off AVG anti-virus while checking for update
4) System restored to the earliest restore point: July 15, 2015

Please help.

A:windows 7 sp1 update stuck at "checking for updates"

This is currently a common issue - partly caused by a poor update from MS which slows the process down, and partly caused by throttling of the MS servers.

Simply leave WU to do it's thing overnight - or longer if necessary - it will get there in the end.
If it's still not completed a scan after 24 hours running...
Please follow the Windows Update Posting Instructions and post the requested data

If the file is too large (8MB compressed), remove the older CBSPersist cab files until the final file is below the limit - you can always post them separately after zipping them. (the forum doesn't allow the upload of bare CAB files, for a number of reasons)

Please also post the C:\Windows\windowsudpate.log file

A:Windows update continually "checking for updates"

I finally got it to work. I had to go into Services and stop/restart both Windows Update and Windows Module Installer. Then launch windows update again and it showed the updates.

They have to be installed 1 at a time. I tried to do 5 at once when it seemed things were working properly again and Windows took that to mean I wanted all updates installed. Of course it failed again with the "failure to configure updates" and I
was back at square one.

To get into services just hit the windows key and R at the same time. Type services.msc then hit enter. I also set both the Update and Installer to manual. Not sure if that had anything to do with making it work.

I am using Windows 7 Pro SP1 64-bit. I want to remove IE 11 but when I go to look at Installed updates, only 47 items show. There are updates for MS Office, Adobe, etc., but no Windows updates. I have another laptop with the same OS and I can see the updates on it. Is there some option in Windows update I need to set?

Removal of IE11 is not the real problem here, it's the absence of the windows components. This is a new laptop.

A:Windows components do not appear in "view installed updates"

If the machine came with IE11 pre-installed, then it almost certainly cannot be removed.
You'd have to reformat and reinstall using retail media - assuming that your machine actually has a proper Windows 7 COA sticker, and isn't simply a downgrade from Windows 8 Pro.

Hello, it is the first time that I can't fix a windows error myself (by googling I mean), so I followed the guide here Windows Update Posting Instructions
1) SURT run, no problem reported
2) SFC all clear (no problem reported)
3) No error code that I can report
I attached the logs in CBS but I had to move some CBSPersist cab files for size reasons.
The only error message I have is when I restart windows after using Windows Updates Cleanup: it says "cleaning.." and then "revert changes" or something like that, my windows is localized in italian and I don't remember the exact string.
It doesn't seems to have pending updates.
Thanks for listening, if you need more logs let me know.

Is there any way to automate the "Find Out More" option in the windows updates?  We currently have to do this for every computer we build, and I would like to take this step out (as a manual step) to try to make the process go quicker.  Is there
any way to automatically install this feature?  I have installed it in the image, but after the sysprep it turns it back off.
Thanks

I Update Windows "Checking For Updates" constantly am running Windows Home bit edition Since Windows Update constantly "Checking For Updates" Monday Aug when I had a notification that Windows update had updates available for me the Update window has been constantly quot Checking for Updates quot When I first checked the notification I was shown a window with the listed updates After looking them over to be certain that there was no Windows in the list I clicked ok Since then for three solid days it has been quot Checking for Updates quot I have rebooted each morning and the same screen is there My computer is usually on at least - hours and in that time it appears only updates have actually taken place The list I was shown at the beginning consisted of mostly files less than megabytes each Nothing remotely large enough to cause delayed downloading nbsp How can I get the Updates to actually begin and stop quot Checking for updates quot or is there some alternate way to get the necessary files Thanks Steve ZV

I work for an IT firm in The Bahamas and as a result do a lot of Windows reloads nbsp However I have noticed that recently within the last year Windows has a very difficult time updating after a fresh reload with SP nbsp When I check for updates it starts scanning and says quot Checking for Updates quot but never finds any nbsp It just keeps checking nbsp I've left it running for hours without ever finding a single update Here's the thing it isn't a particular computer nbsp As I said I do a lot of reloads for Stuck "Checking Update at updates" Windows nbsp This happens Windows Update Stuck at "Checking for updates" on almost every computer after a reload of Windows regardless of brand nbsp Sometimes I scan before activating Windows sometimes after nbsp There is no antivirus installed and I've tried it with Windows Firewall both enabled and disabled nbsp Sometimes after scanning for a long time it will automatically install updates without having me select any of the updates nbsp It still says quot Checking for Updates quot Other times it just never finds or installs any updates but it still says quot Checking for Updates quot nbsp I'm not the only one who has recognized the problems my colleagues have also experienced it nbsp I've also tried updating on many different networks home work customers network etc nbsp Same result I have done lots of research online to see if other people have been having this issue but I have not found anything nbsp Has anybody else been experiencing this problem nbsp Is Microsoft having an issue with Windows update or are they intentionally trying to discourage the use of Windows nbsp I'm not sure how it has been such a big problem for my colleagues and I in the last year but no one seems to know anything about it

Hi there new to the forums and thought I'd ask this question since I can't seem to find Windows "Clicking" sound after updates performing any real answer on here via search or on Google My computer tower has begun recently making a quot clicking quot noise on Restart Shutdown and I am having trouble finding out if it is my HDD or my PSU making the noise The weird problem is it doesn't make the click noise on a fresh install of Windows and also does not make the noise when I installed Ubuntu linux as a test It only starts making the click noise on a restart shutdown after installing Windows updates Other than that my PSU and HDD both perform as if they were brand new I am having no power issues and my HDD is reading writing perfectly fine and has passed both diagnostics "Clicking" sound after performing Windows updates and surface checks EDIT I seem to "Clicking" sound after performing Windows updates have found the culprit it was a faulty and outdated AMD SATA controller driver provided by Windows update Installed AHCI SATA controller and the clicking has now stopped

A:"Clicking" sound after performing Windows updates

Just for reference, is it a hardware clicking sound or a clicking sound through the speakers?
