No volume icon showing in taskbar

Q: No volume icon showing in taskbar

I have reset explorer.exe and it pops back, but when I restart my laptop it does not show up again.

I have even gone into the registry and followed the instructions from this video on Youtube and it's still the same.

Preferred Solution: No volume icon showing in taskbar

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/directdownload.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

According to the Dell downloads for the 15R SE, this has Conexant audio. Suggest you download and install the driver from Dell, as the first step.

I have a toolbar on my taskbar titled "Programs". It has about eight folders in it. I made another toolbar, and placed it directly adjacent to the Programs toolbar, to obscure the eight folders and force it to be a dropdown menu.

Trouble is, as soon as I lock my taskbar, right next to the arrow that displays the eight items of my Programs toolbar in menu-form, one of the eight items is showing up as an icon, as if the other toolbar isn't close enough to the Programs toolbar in order to completely obscure the eight items.

Here's what I mean in graphic form:

It's bugging me to no end. Anyone else had this problem/resolved it?

A:Toolbar on taskbar should only be showing an arrow but is showing icon

Hello thewonkits, and welcome to Seven Forums.

I notice this happens when using small icons for a toolbar. If you like, you could unlock the taskbar, right click on the dotted separator line to the left of the two top far left toolbars (one at a time) click on View and Large Icons, then lock the taskbar to see if that may look ok to you. It will make the top row a bit bigger though.

Hopefully someone may know a better way to hide that bit of icon poking out when locked.

Hi everyone. I had my new desktop with Windows 7 Home 64bit for about 2 weeks now and so far im loving it. The one and only problem im having is the volume icon in the taskbar. I know its been posted several times before (i searched) but non of the solutions fixed my problem.

Sometimes when my Windows boots up, the volume icon is missing from the taskbar. I take a look in "turn system icons on or off" and the Volume, Network and Action Center are greyed out (cant click them.) It does this once every 2 or 3 reboots. The only way to fix it is to reboot. Its not a huge problem but its very annoying having to reboot 2 times.

Any ideas or solutions for my problem?

Hey,

I upgraded to Windows 7 from Vista. Recently, after windows finished installing some updates, I noticed that my Volume icon had disappeared from my taskbar. When I went to restore it, it wouldn't let me select the volume icon to put in my taskbar, the option had been "grayed out" so to speak.

Also, and this is secondary, when I upgraded to Windows 7 I noticed my PC took longer to start up and longer to perform basic functions like opening up my web browser.

Any suggestions on either of these would be great!

Thanks,

Jack

This "might" help. I found it in a forum on this site, helped me.

Is there anything pinned currently?

Here is here is where they get stored:

C:\Users\<your user account name>\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Quick Launch\User Pinned\TaskBar

Drag a program shortcut to this folder, see if it gets pinned.

I have a presario 700 laptop running XP. For months now I can't find the volume icon in the taskbar. My dialup starts screeching (I played some music yesterday) and I have to open control panel and then click on the sounds & volume icon, then click mute. To put the icon back in the taskbar I need to uncheck the "Place volume icon in the taskbar" command and APPLY. Then check the command and APPLY again.

How can I put the icon back into taskbar permanently? And why did it leave taskbar in the first place?

A:volume icon is missing on taskbar

Welcome to the forums

http://support.microsoft.com/default...;EN-US;Q319095

If you don't have an xp cd try these

First try : Go into your Control Panel and open Folder Options, under the View tab uncheck "Hide protected operating system files (recommended)", click Apply/OK. Now go into Windows Explorer(Not Internet Explorer) and go to C:\Windows\System32\dllcache folder and open it. Locate the sndvol32.exe file right click it,choose copy. Next go to the C:\Windows\System32 folder and open it. In the right pane right click an empty area and choose Paste. Now you should have your volume icon back.

if this doesn't work, then download the exe file from:

When this happens, which is frequently,  I go into Control Panel  "Sounds and Audio Devices Properties" and find that the "Place volume icon in the taskbar" box is still ticked.

I untick it, press OK, tick the box, press OK, and the icon reappears.

Not important, perhaps, but I find it very irritating.  Why does this happen, and what can I do to stop it?

On my WinXP SP3 Home Edition laptop, I visit Control Panel -> Sounds and Audio Properties and I check the box for Place volume icon in the Taskbar and I uncheck Mute. Is there a way to configure this so it stays as desired across reboots? Thanks.

Hey everyone, just made this account cause I can't find a permanent solution anywhere.

As the title states, the Volume Icon in the Taskbar is missing on Windows Startup.

Yes, I know I can bring it back by restarting my Explorer.exe and such, still it bugs me to do so on every system restart.

Volume is enabled in Windows Settings (see attachment), still it's only showing after i restart the explorer.exe after every startup. ("Always show all icons in the notification area" is on, obviously)

On "Turn System Icons on or off" on the other hand, its disabled, greyed out even, so I thought somebody might know a regedit fix or something similar to keep it on on startup.

Is there any permanent solution to fix this "bug" ?

Just in case: Soundcard is a Soundblaster Z, other Specs on Profile.

Thanks in advance,

Cheers.

How do I do it? I really miss having a quick way to get to the desktop. I have googled on this and found answers that varied and were a little complicated. Is there someone out there who has a found a simple way to do this?

A:Showing the desktop icon in the taskbar in win 7

Hi,

In Windows 7 you simply either hover the mouse over or click the 'Show desktop' button that sits immediately to the right of the date/time on the task bar:

If this isn't what you're looking for let me know in more detail what you're after. Hope this helps.

Jon.

I got both of these problems right after recovering from a virus which leads me to thinking they may be connected My first problem is not being able to select the volume or network icons in the taskbar Theyre both grayed out and no fix on the internet has worked for it and Taskbar, Grayed Window Preview Icon in Out Alt+Tab No Volume with so far Ive Volume Icon Grayed Out in Taskbar, and No Window Preview with Alt+Tab tried doing the registry edits and fixes uninstalling and reinstalling the audio device driver deleting the iconstreams in registry all to no avail nothing has seemed to work Also my Alt Tab no longer displays a preview on the windows minmized while im holding it down it used to have this sort of quot vistaish quot and stylish format to it and Volume Icon Grayed Out in Taskbar, and No Window Preview with Alt+Tab now it looks a lot like the classic windows alt tab and shows default icons for each window it changed right after cleaning my pc up from a virus im guessing something got messed up in the registry Ive searched all over the internet for solutions to these and so far nothing at all has worked im getting desperate for help Thanks

I know this is a minor issue but its annoying, to say the least, to constantly go to the control panel to replace it.

Task bar locked/unlocked makes no difference. Seems every time I reboot I must replace the volume icon to easily access volume controls.

Any suggestions? Registry error?

On windows 8.1, my taskbar, one day, suddenly stopped displaying the audio icon on the taskbar. When I right click it, go to the properties, and click customize, it doesn't show the audio icon as an option. When I click, "turn system icons on or off," I can see the audio icon, but it is locked to off. I don't know where to look from here.

A:[SOLVED] Not Showing Audio Icon On Taskbar

Method 1:
There is no option available in control panel volume settings to show volume icon like earlier operating system. In Windows 8 and 8.1 you can enable volume icon by modifying ?Turn system icons on or off? option.
Right click on or near time clock in notification area and select Properties.

Make sure Volume icon is set ?On? as shown below, if it were off, make it on to show volume icon.

If the above step hasn?t help, ?Restore default icon behaviors? which may bring back the missing icon.

This is the normal procedure to get back the volume icon. In case the Volume icon option ( on/off) grayed out and you can?t change it, then follow the method 2.

Method 2: If volume icon is missing and you can?t enable it from ?Turn system icons on or off? area, then that could be an issue with explorer process. The following two methods can solve the issue.
a) Kill the explorer.exe from Processes or Details tab under task manager. Find out all explorer.exe and kill them, make sure no explorer.exe is running in the task manager. After that, on the file menu select new process or Run (or new tasks), type ?explorer? and press OK. It will start the new explorer process. That should bring back the volume icon, if it hasn?t, redo the method 1

This method has brought back missing volume icon on my Windows 8.1 computer.
b) Registry modification- Its recommended to take a backup before modifying registry.
Open registry editor in Windows and find out;
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Classes\Local Settings\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\TrayNotify

After modifying registry keys, you need to kill and restart the explorer.exe process to take effect.

I had to do a clean install on a new hard drive and since then have not been able to get my task bar balloons to show. For example, when using the Safely Remove Hardware icon, I don't get the Now Safe To Remove balloon. I only get a popping sound. My volume icon in Taskbar disappeared a few days ago, along with sounds of any kind (internet, iTunes, WMP...). A diagnostic from Fix My PC revealed the error: "Windows cannot find C:\Windows\System32\System32.exe" ...I'm not sure if that's part of this problem or not.

There are no yellow! prompts in the Device Manager under Sound, video and game controllers. I haven't identified the virus which likely caused this issue, and I do not have a copy of Windows XP to reinstall as I bought this laptop from my former employer upon leaving the company.

My objective is fix the Sound so it is fully operational again. Any ideas? Please help!

Yep, right click on the Taskbar, Properties, and you should see Notification area. Click on Customize... It brings up the Control Panel and you should see blue text saying Turn system icons on or off. Click that. You should see the battery icon and be able to change that to on.

It's been couple of days since I upgraded my system to Windows 10 from Windows 7. Everything is working fine except this nasty error. If I pin apps to taskbar or run apps , the app icons on the taskbar are shown as white square. And I am seeing the same thing on Apps & Feature settings list. The icons are there but as the backgrounds are shown as grey-white chequered pattern (for the transparency ), it looks like white squares. Rebuilt the icon cache but to no avail. Some time over the last few weeks I lost the Speaker Volume control icon on my Taskbar (Normally on the right side near the digital clock). I don't know what I did to make it leave, but I was looking for it just the other day and realized it was gone! I went into my Control Panel to access the audio sliders, and when I checked the box to display the volume control icon on the Taskbar, a text box popped up telling me that I have to install it from my add/remove programs function. Well, I can not find the Volume Control icon function anywhere, including on my original Windows XP Professional installation CD. Can anyone tell me how I can re-install the speaker Volume Control icon on my Taskbar?

In my case the problem was accidentally hitting the volume button on my keyboard. How is your sound setup in Windows 7? Is your monitor set as the default sound device? I need help getting to the bottom of this, not sure why it's happening, or when it started happening, maybe a week ago...

I get a seemingly random icon flash on the taskbar for no more than a few miliseconds, so i checked
event viewer to track down what was happening and the only thing i can find is 2 events in the subcategory
Application that states the source as RestartManager
and the event ID as 10000 and 10001, these both appear every time the icon flashes on the taskbar

I think this issue is also causing fullscreen flash vids to show the taskbar and a loading circle on the cursor... also Battlefield 4 likes to get a black screen then when i alt-tab i'm back to the game without any crashing or any error besides this ominous

I installed a program yesterday and pinned an icon onto my taskbar. I've noticed today that the icon has gone and has been replaced by the default windows icon (red, blue white). Even if I go into properties, change icon etc, nothing happens.
What can I do?
Thanks to whoever can offer suggestions.

2 problems:
1) no IE icon on desktop or in programs. i have internet access through verizon. i recently got windows update to install IE7 in the hope that would restore the icon/program but the only way i can access the internet is via the verizon browser. i clearly installed IE7 because now the "sidebar" of my verizon browser says that "sidebar i currently not compatible with IE7...". so why can't i get the IE7 icon in my program list or desktop?

i have attached the HijackThis file

2)my volume controls have disappeared from my windows taskbar and i'd like it back. do you know how?
thanks

A:Lost IE icon and sound controls icon from taskbar

I have created a shortcut icon which takes me directly to my Online Banking Login page.
I would like to place this icon (an image of a padlock taken from windows icon cache) on the taskbar.
My problem is, when I drag the icon to the taskbar a popup asks me if I want to 'Pin to Internet Explorer'...this is the only option given.
If I drop the icon onto the taskbar it changes my 'Padlock' icon to that of Internet Explorer...Clicking on this IE icon still takes me to my Online Banking Login page but I find it confusing having an IE icon.

Does anyone know how I can have my 'Padlock' icon showing on the taskbar.

Thanks

Jan

At Windows 7, I created 3 program shortcuts which execute same executable. Then I changed icons for second shortcut and third shortcut. When I launched the executable from the second and third shortcut, the taskbar icon of the executable will be that of the shortcut icon instead of the executable MainForm icon. In XP and Vista, it will use MainForm icon in the taskbar. Is this the intended behaviour of Windows 7?

A:Padlock icon on IE icon on taskbar

Hi and welcome to SevenForums,
Please right click the existing shortcut and click on Unpin this program from the Taskbar,
If you also have a shortcut on your desktop right click and delete it as well,
Close all open ie windows,

Click Start and click on All Programs If ie is also listed as your recently opened programs right click it and Remove from list,

Click on All Programs,
See if ie has a shield on that listing if not Open and right click it on the taskbar and Pin to Taskbar,
Cheers.

Hello everyone,
There is a strange problem I am facing for quite a long time. Whenever I get connected to the internet using a dialup connection, the connection icon which used to come in the taskbar doesn't come. Also when I connect usb devices there is no device connection icon in the taskbar. The strange thing is that when I go to control panel and load "sound and audio device" and tick "place the volume icon in the taskbar", both internet connection icon and usb devices icon appear in the taskbar. Whenever I reboot the system, the volume icon disappears again, needing to re-tick the "place the volume icon in the taskbar" in the "sound and audio device". This is really annoying me. Kindly help me.

Running Windows XP. My volume icon disappeared and the computer no longer makes sounds and I can not hear online applications like You Tube.

If I download a file I can play it back and hear it just fine and I can play items in Windows Media, Quick Time, Real Audio, etc.

I have checked the volume tab in the control panel so the problem is more complicated then that. I can not find the original disk to reinsert the driver. This is a dell inspiron 9400 and I have SigmaTel and the troubeshooting tells me there is nothing wrong with it.

I have run all my virus scans and Malware programs.

Any ideas.

I am trying to copy files from my cpu using win 7 to a friends using win 8. hd shows up with the volume used but files are not viewable. tried to copy and past to a new folder saw all the music files as they were pasteing . after I opened the new folder some files were there about 2gig out of 414 any help would be appreciated

A:files not showing ,but volume is used on ex hd

Hi Rock66,

what do you mean you've tried to copy files from you CPU? Your CPU is the central processing unit ==> the core of you pc?

As far as I understand your question you are trying to copy files from your PC to a friends PC. You run Windows 7, he runs Windows 8.

This should not be any problem. So my guess is that the medium you copied the files to is corrupt (are you using an external HDD or a USB stick?)

Therefore my advise would be to FORMAT the medium using your Windows 7 computer with STANDARD SETTINGS!. Copy paste the requires files to the medium and then connect the medium to the Windows 8 machine. That should work!

Wish I had a better title, but I wasn't sure how to word this.

Basically what's happening is I have 2 instances of Firefox (different versions and different folder locations) and one of the instances is not opening where it's icon location is.

Example Screenshot:
As you can see. The far left instance does not want to open where it's icon location is.
The far right version always does it.
Even if I unpin the currently working instance (blue/orange icon) to only house 1 firefox instance (grey/black), the grey/black instance will still not open like the blue/orange instance current does (in it's own icon).
Hopefully this isn't confusing for anyone. I searched for a few terms to see if anyone had this problem and nothing came up, maybe I wasn't wording my searches correctly.

Hopefully someone can give some insights.
Thanks.

Hello. I have a brand new laptop which uses (I think) Realtek software for volume.

When I go to Control Panel --> Sounds, and click on "Volume icon in system tray", I receive an error message that "the volume control program has not been installed." I enabled the volume icon for "show always" in the system tray options area, as well, but it doesn't show up.

I reinstalled what I thought was the Realtek sound driver from the system restore disk that came with the laptop, and it still doesn't work. Any ideas?
Thanks!

Go to Control Panel | System. Device Manager. Under Sound is the name of your sound card. Also, rightclick and choose Properties, Driver tab. What's the version?

Also, which version of Windows are you running?

i tried to place the volume slider in the taskbar by going into the system volume screen and checking the box to do so, but when i do that im told its not installed and to install it by going to add/remove programmes...

does ne1 know where i can find an install file for the vloume control in the taskbar. i tried searching microsoft for it but i only found way how to use it, which i already know.

my pc did recently get fixed from a major problem and i noticed 1 major difference in the volume of the sound, its much much louder so therefore at times when using earphones listening to things that have no seperate volume sliders i get deafened, so it would be useful to be able to quickly change it just from the taskbar

Toshiba Satellite 1805-S253, Win ME.

Recently tried to install an 802.11g PC card, lots of issues, and had to have a local shop uninstall, fix registry, and repair video drivers and stuff.

I don't want to go back to them, but I now have no sound other than the modem will deliver the dialtone sound. Media Player is silent. No Speaker icon in the taskbar.
No way to click "show volume control in taskbar": I can see it, but it is inactive.

Specs say ALI M1535, and Trident AK4543 Codec.
Device Manager says there is an ALI WMD driver.

Looked all over for an easy driver download.... aargh.

how do I get the icon to appear in the task bar. The "show volume icon" box is checked in the sounds and audio window.

A:volume icon

Right click the task bar

Click "Properties"

At the bottom there's a button called "Customize..."

Click on it, and in there you can decide which icons XP should:

- Always hide (So you can hide an icon you only need sometimes)
- Always Show (For the volume, you want this)
- Hide When Inactive (when nothing is happening with this process, XP hides the icon.)

They are otherwise hidden behind an arrow. You can click this to expand it and view the icons.

To always view all icons, uncheck the "Hide Inactive Icons" check box in the "Properties" menu.

I am having some difficulty with my volume icon. My sound works fine, I hear everything, but the icon is gone from the far right of my taskbar. I think this is also causing my not being able to manually adjust the volume with the button on the side of the laptop. I went into control panel, and tried to check "place volume icon in the taskbar" but it is greyed (meaning I can't check it) and it says no audio device. I also checked the device manager to see if there are any sound icons with a red x or yellow ! over them but there werent any.

I am running XP. thanks!
