I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/directdownload.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Sounds like a router/modem/ISP issue as it is affecting more than one device and not just your Win 8 laptop, might be worth checking the forums for those....

One option is to re-boot the router/modem then the devices....

A:Wifi Speed Limited to 20 Mbps?!

I second that, the Lenovo team should take a closer look at this problem.I'm oscilating around 4MB/s, which is also slower than expected, sometimes even dropping to 2,5.It could be a driver fault, hopefully fixable.

I live in an assisted living establishment with wifi furnished free but it isn't the best.I'm showing 5 bars on my computer, but I'm only getting around 1 Mbps and I see a lot of the spinning donut. Are there things that I am able to do or am I at the mercy of the owner. He probably would not be willing to spend a little more cash just to satisfy a few of us old geezers.

A:I've got 5 bars wifi, but only about 1 Mbps download speed.

You have 2 effects - for one the owner probably went with a cheap connection (ask him what it is) and then there are several people connecting to the router which produces contention.

Hello,

I plugged in an N-adapter to a USB hub and it gave me a 6 Mbps in www.speedtest.net. I thought this was kind of slow for what the adapter "claimed" (300Mbps). But then I plugged it directly into a computer port and it showed 24 Mbps (my internet plan is 25 Mbps), which I suppose it's pretty close or even "maxed" because it's not really 25 Mbps all the time, right?

Is this normal? Is my USB hub crappy/old? Would it make a difference if I get a new USB hub?

Thanks.

A:Signal is excellent and speed is 1 mbps to 8 mbps?

From a quick look at you post, I think you are not using the right driver for the USB adapter. Also, XP has to be up to date to work with wireless.Does the computer have an Ethernet card? Can you possibly get an Ethernet cable and run it directly from the tourer to you old XP computer? If you can do that, you will have to do the Internet Wizard again so that it includes the Ethernet card in the network.Older versions of XP that are not up to date only work with Ethernet. Unless you disable wireless security. Which is a bad idea. Windows XP has a hard time with wireless security. However, I am not sure that would fix lour problem. Sometimes you have to do the XP Network wizard three times before it comes out right.

Hello all. Here is my set up. I have 1.5M internet service coming into my CradlePoint CTR35 wireless router. The two devices I have are my desktop, and an iPad. When doing a speed test at speedtest.net, I find that my desktop running windows 7 gets about 1.45, and my iPad is only pulling 1.36M. I realize that isn't a big deal, but why would there be a varience between the devices? Shouldn't they be able to test out the same?

A:WIFI internet speed varience between devices

The Operating System parameter settings that determine data transfer rates are slightly different on the two machines. Differences between computers on the same LAN are normal.

With many older OS's and probably the one on your iPad these values are permanently set in the registry. They are just general values that will usually give a good data rate. Sometimes these values can be changed to improve the flow.

Starting with Vista and Windows 7, the OS actually monitored the data flow and could change some of the values to improve it.

I have two XP desktops, a Vista desktop and a Vista laptop. All will show slightly different results on speed tests to the same server.

The two XP's have the same values for all their changable settings, but one always tests about 0.04 M higher than the other.

I am considering using a powerline system to give me additional wifi cover, but I am unclear how the available wifi connection is protected. They make a great deal of encrypting the traffic over the power circuit, but no mention is made of protecting the wifi connection. Surely, the risk with these is the same as with a wireless router?

Anyone got any experience of this?

Hey all, and thanx in advance for any responses.

It's exactly as the title says. Moderately slow internet compared to other devices. It has only been this way for a couple days.

Win7 with an up-to-date wireless PCI card excellent connection running at 54mb wireless LAN. Never before had any internet problems that weren't ISP-side.

Recently, I left AVG off for a few days b/c I was lazy to reinstall the free version after expiring the trial full version.

I've done about 2 hours research and messing around with what I could. But I am desperate and without inspiration or faith or hope. Please help!!

I recently upgraded my internet from 25 mbps to 100, while I thought getting 9.5 was always normal for that speed, after the upgrade it is still sitting at the same speed. My other devices in the house are getting at least 70 mb/s via wifi while I have a hardwired connection. I've done everything I can think of, downloading newest drivers, calling my ISP, trying different modems cords connection types or devices. Nothing has made any change, there is no change in speed between wifi and hardwired eiher, they both cap at 9.52 mb/s. I'm currently updating to windows 10, and am on a different device, but in a few hours I will post again with system specs and the requested log.

A:Internet speed is being capped at 10 mbps

Do you have a DOCSIS 3 modem? The older models are DOCSIS 2.

Have you replaced your router?

It would help if you posted both the brand and exact model of modem and router.

So I have a wireless network setup in our 4 bedroom apartment and I am connecting wirelessly on my desktop with a usb drive(hub is in another room). Half of the time I will have an excellent connection at 54Mbps, and then for whatever reason, will just plummet to 1Mbps but still says excellent signal strength. Right now its working perfectly fine, however an hour or so from now, will probably crash randomly. I have a feeling its my firewall because its disabled right now, but im not sure. Any other ideas?

A:Signal Strength = Excellent, Speed = 1 Mbps

Make sure you have the latest driver for the wireless adapter.

Could be the adapter or router beginning to fail. How to recover after the bandwidth plummets?

In an apartment building there are lots of opportunities for wireless interference, such as from 2.4Ghz cordless phones and other networks on the same or close channel.

Firewalls either block or not; I have never heard of them affecting speed as in your symptoms.

Hi Guys, Need some troubleshooting help with my connection. My speed has decreased drastically beginning in early January, dropping from 27-31mbps to 1.6 mbps
Here is what I have done so far
I have power cycled my router, and I have swapped out ethernet cables to both my router and to my PC.
I have bypassed my router and, direct connected thru my modem . Oddly enough, this was even slower
I am running teamviewer so I can simultaneously check speed on my other win 7 PC (3 feet away) where my download speed is 30.1mbps

I have wirelss devises in the house that have good connection so process of elimination points to my PC. It would be nice if it just stopped working all together. It is the slow speed that confuses me.

Buy an ethernet card and be done with it or have I missed something?

Thanks in advance for your assist

Tami

A:Solved: Help with troubleshooting speed. download is 1.6 mbps!!

And you are connected to your router via Ethernet?

What is the specs of the computer in question?
And since you mentioned that it worked fine prior to January, do you recall making any configuration to the operating system (e.g downloading new softwares...) or made any hardware changes with your current network?

My guess would be something to do with the Operating System that is consuming bandwidth resources making the said computer slow.

Internal and external speeds are fully different. Your internal hard drive runs off the South bridge Chipset, which all new SATA controllers are SATA III 6G. The USB 3.0 runs off a completely different controller or Chipset, such as AsMedia or VIA Chipset. That 40 MBS is actually a good transfer rate speed for an external 3.0 port.

My Motherboard has USB 3.0 boost, and there was only one USB 3.0 flash drive in it, and the transfer rates were between 20mb to 35 mb a sec, which I think is normal for a flash drive. All other flash drives are USB 2.0 that I use in the ports

Hi all,
I'm planning to get myself a 3G datacard. I'm not being able to decide whether to spend money for a 21Mbps one or go for a 14.4. Thing is in my city 3G speeds never reach beyond 3-6Mbps. So would the 21Mbps thing help? As in, in the same network, will the 21Mbps perform better than the 14.4 Mbps one or will they be similar in performance?
I'm thinking, if these have different compression and/or modulation technologies, the 21 Mbps card might have an advantage, like a 56k modem has better speeds than a 33.6k modem on a same not-so-good analog telephone line, mainly due to the different compression technology involved. I couldn't find proper information about this in the internet, so posted this question.

Thanks,

Hi,

I need a help to resolve one issue with my Belkin router F7D4402 v1. I have got it recently and configured it without any issue and my internet (ADSL) was up and running. However, later I have noticed that, my internet speed is limited to 1.5 Mbps. whereas; the speed I was getting on my old Linksys WAG200 router was minimum 2.0 Mbps.

I have tried to disable the QoS and other options but no use. But when I enabled the Mac cloning it worked fine. I was getting the speed I subscribed for, but unfortunately, the other devices on my Wi-Fi stopped working. With Mac clone enable, the internet is only available to my PC.

I need the internet on my PC plus all the Wi-Fi devices in my house and along with it my full internet speed, not just 1.5 Mbps.

Can anyone please help to fix the issue?

Thank a lot.

A:Sub 10 Mbps results on wifi, from a 300M optic fibre plan

Hi there

Wifi will depend on both the quality / protocol of your Router and your devices -- you'll be lucky to get a 2 - 3 Mbs wifi download whatever the fibre optic cable can deliver.

Another thing to consider is to add an extender / repeater - this improves poor signal immensely. If say your SSID is DOGGY then the extender will simply create your new one with the name DOGGY-EXT same passwords etc -- these work really well.

Wifi isn't (yet) the fastest protocol around.

Cheers

Hi I ve been experiencing some problems with my RangeMax wireless NETGEAR router model WPN in terms of wireless connectivity When directly plugged into my router i e using ethernet cables the download and upload speed in mbps - megabytes per second appear to be working correctly where we register average download speeds of - mbps and to mbps for upload speeds as shown on speedtest net However our wireless devices i e laptops and Nintendo Wii are not picking up the same download speeds but the upload speed is fine The problem is that the download speeds of the wireless devices are comparatively low where speeds of to mbps are a commonality We ve tried resetting the router pushing that small button at the back of the router using a pin and WPN824 download for Desperate problem mbps Solved: NETGEAR assistance!!!! speed - have a new -character key password We ve also tried simply unlugging the power cable to the router with disconnecting lengths of about seconds to over a minute for separate attempts It is also worth noting that the router occasionally disconnects and re-connects on irregular intervals and we have many wireless devices attached to the router though many of these are not in use and are very often disconnected from the internet so I do not think the router is being overwhelmed I am currently paying for mbps downloading speed and mbps with respect to uploading though the mbps downloading speed will likely only be registered if directly connected to the black box modem As such values of to mbps for downloading speed for a wireless device would be considered quot normal quot Why would our wireless devices not pick the correct mbps download speed Is it possible that there Solved: NETGEAR WPN824 mbps download speed problem - Desperate for assistance!!!! is a setting on the NETGEAR SMARTWIZARD page that is preventing this Any assistance would be greatly appreciated Thank you for your time Trav nbsp

I recently upgraded my internet service and found that speed test results from speedtest.net and speakeasy.com were giving me download results that were ~ half of what I was supposed to be getting ( 9Mbs vs 16Mbs). I called the ISP and they suggested I restart in safe mode w/ networking and run the tests again. I did and the results of the test were surprising. I was getting the 16Mbs download speed that I signed up for. The tech suggested that I may be infected with something. I run several free programs (Mbam, avg, avast, ect.) to try to aviod these things, but it seems as though something may have gotten through. Any help that you guys may be able to provide would be greatly appreciated. Btw, no error messages and I am running Windows XP. Thanks in advance.

Hi all,
I'm not sure if this is the right forum, but it's the closest I could find.
I have Qwest Broadband DSL at 5mb, which is the fastest speed offered in my area.
I ran some speed tests online, and most results are at about 1800kbps download and 600kbps upload.
Is that normal? I don't even know what 5mbps is in terms of kbps.
Also, the ping seems pretty high at around 100.
Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!

When comparing speeds, remember to divide your speedtest result by 8. 0.89 mbps is around 101KBps.

Download speeds depend on many factors, inclduing the modem/router, traffic through your ISP at the time, and the type of download, just to name a couple.

What type of download is it? Are they torrents? These can often be slow.

Are downloads slow from everywhere?

You mentioned video buffering; Do you have downloads going at the same time that you are trying to view a video? Are there other people sharing your connection (eg other family members)?

You didn't say if you had tried rebooting the router/modem, or if you had been in contact with your ISP. These would be among the first things to try.

As you haven't stated what you have tried, I'm going to assume none of the following have been tried. Apologies if you have tried/tested the following.

If you plug a phone into the same wall socket at your modem do hear any noise/static or is is sound quality very poor or low volume? These might indicate physical line problems, which your Telco would need to address.

It's also possible the equipment at your local exchange is in need of a reboot. This is often referred to as a "Port reset". Your ISP can do this for you.

Other things you can try is replacing the phone and ethernet cable (if you are connected by cable), or replacing the line filter if you have one. If you have multiple devices on your phone line remove everything except your modem/router.

If you have a DSL connection you know that the speeds will vary dramatically from one hour to the next. But 2KBps is poor in any situation.

Have you tried doing ping and tracert to various sites? You ISP may want this information to place a fault report with your telco.

copy and paste results into an email to your ISP

ping www.google.com -t (Stop it after a minute or so).
ping www.yahoo.com -t (Stop it after a minute or so).

tracert www.google.com

See how you go with the above. Get back to us if you get no joy from your ISP/Telco.

For some reason programs and files are taking a very long time to download (about 30 kbps), but youtube plays fine, I can go to any website and troubleshooting shows nothing wrong. I went to speedtest.net and I'm averaging about 12 mbps so files should be downloading fast.

At this point I'm stumped. This PC has a fresh install of Windows 7, up-to-date. It is a Dell OptiPlex 780.

I should have also mentioned that the Network drivers are also up-to-date.

Hello,And welcome to BleepingComputer.com, before we can assist you with your question of: Am I infected? You will need to perform the following tasks and post the logs of each if you can.Malwarebytes Anti-MalwareNOTEMalwarebytes is now offering a free trial of their program, if you want to accept it you will need to enter some billing information, so that at the end of the trial you would be charged the cost of the product. Please decline this offer, if you are unable to provide billing information. If you want to try it out, then provide the billing information. Please download Malwarebytes Anti-Malware and save it to your desktop.Download Link 1Download Link 2MBAM may "make changes to your registry" as part of its disinfection routine. If using other security programs that detect registry changes (ie Spybot's Teatimer), they may interfere or alert you. Temporarily disable such programs or permit them to allow the changes.Make sure you are connected to the Internet.Double-click on mbam-setup.exe to install the application.
For instructions with screenshots, please refer to the How to use Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware Guide. When the installation begins, follow the prompts and do not make any changes to default settings. When installation has finished, make sure you leave both of these checked:Update Malwarebytes' Anti-MalwareLaunch Malwarebytes' Anti-MalwareThen click Finish.MBAM will automatically start and you will be asked to update the program before performing a scan.If an update is found, the program will automatically update itself. Press the OK button to close that box and continue. If you encounter any problems while downloading the definition updates, manually download them from here and just double-click on mbam-rules.exe to install. On the Scanner tab:Make sure the "Perform Full Scan" option is selected. Then click on the Scan button. If asked to select the drives to scan, leave all the drives selected and click on the Start Scan button. The scan will begin and "Scan in progress" will show at the top. It may take some time to complete so please be patient. When the scan is finished, a message box will say "The scan completed successfully. I have Comcast cable and am using Windows 7 Ultimate, but everything really went South about 6-7 months ago and my computer got REALLY slow.

Today, after getting harped on by Comcast to buy a new modem I bought a Motorolla Surfboard and decided to check my Internet speed by going to the Comcast test page and WOW, this thing is slower that dial-up!!! It says that it's downloading at 3.61 megs!!!!

QUESTION:

When you do an online speed check does that show your download speed in spite of any garbage in the system, or is it telling me how slow it is BECAUSE there is crap in the system? In other words is my Internet connection (speed test) just slow in the first place, or is it slow because the computer is just filthy and needs to be wiped? I'[m supposed to be getting at least 50 meg speeds from Comcast.

HELP!!!

A:Speed test

You are on a network - even is you don't understand that it is a network.

The connection between your computer and the modem is a network. If your computer is infected, the infection could be causing enough traffic to impact the speed test. However, such traffic would have to be pretty heavy to impact the test done by websites like speedtest.net.

The other side of your modem is another network. You probably share this network with your neighbors. Their network traffic can impact your speed test results.

The other side of Comcast's neighborhood network is the Internet. Traffic on the Internet can also impact your speed test results - especially if you pick a server that is far away from where you are located.

I have XP Pro on a desktop, and Windows 7 Pro on a laptop. The internet access speed is very noticeably slower on the XP. I did a speed test on both machines. On the XP I got a download speed of roughly 7mbps (I have a high speed connection through cable of 30mbps). On the laptop the speed exceeds - I get close to 60mbps! The PC is connected to the router but the laptop is not, it's on the home network.

I am pretty sure I'm not going to get the same speed on the XP because it's an older machine, but I'd sure like to get a little closer to the cable speed I signed up for.

So what might I have to do to achieve that?

A:XP speed test vs W7

When speed connection differs specially wired is slower than wireless though they worked properly, it is sometimes best to look for the obvious, which is the installed network adapter. Whether upgrading/replacing it which could improve the network speed or look for an updated driver version which could address the problem. See also here http://support.microsoft.com/kb/299540

It is my understanding that in most cases when slow and fast ram were mixed, the system tends to "auto-config" to the slowest ram speed and/or what is required for operation, if it boots. Im wondering if there's anyway to check what that "auto-config" speed is adjusted to manually or with software ?

Also my Dell desktop running WIN 7 displays the same speed results as my laptop.

the windows one is probably using a shitty server to test from i wouldnt worry about it just trust the higher one If its bothering you just put "download test file" into google itll give you list of places you download a file unbuffered and youll see from your download speed how your connection is , you should be getting something like 5mb/s with your connection (thats a guess in working on 2.5mb/s for 20 mbps), if you have the steam client thats usually a good place to download from to test

Just reboot and tap Delete or Function 2, whichever the first black screen tells you that you need to go into Setup. They are the BUIOS menus and one called System Monitor or PC Health will tell you the revolutions per minute at which the CPU fan and the case fan, if fitted, are running at.

A:Test Speed

Hi Dj,

There are a number of reasons for this, some of which you can control and some which are completely out of your control. Before you continue, disconnect ALL phone equipment (including cables to your PC and router) and reconnect them. The action of doing this wipes the contacts inside the connector and can sometimes give you a better connection - you probably don't notice this at audio levels, but at high-frequencies such as those used by broadband, it can make a huge difference. This should at least ensure that everything is connected properly at your end. Next, test your speed by following the link below. Remember that the results of this are merely a guide and represent your machine's capability at that moment in time. Repeat the test several times to get a truer result, also try the test at different times of the day to minimise the effects of network density in your area. This advice holds true in the UK where I am based, and it probably does for you too.

I have cable internet and am paying for 6-12mb speeds. Using speedtest.net, I am getting 3.75dl and 1.90up. I chatted with tech support and they ran the same test from their side and am getting 6mb+?? The rep said it's my wireless router that's the issue. My network speeds are full speed, and full signal on a 3 computer wireless N two-antenna router network. How is there that much of a bottleneck in my router? I tried a direct connection to the modem but unfortunately, my comp is having issues with its ethernet connection. Any ideas? I'm about to go test another router, but I only have a G and that would be too weak to transmit to my other two comps.

It is advisable to test for bandwidth using several sources and at different times during the day. Another test is found at:http://www.dslreports.com/toolsAnd if you have Mozilla or FF, there is a add-on bandwidth tester. You should check with your ISP to determine if there is a guaranteed minimum download rate (perhaps on their homepage), and also ask technical support to check the connexion from their end.Regards,John

Unfortunately there isnt much you can do. ADSL (and pair gain adsl) is dependent on distance from the switching statation. SBC (and att+t) dont promise the 3 Mb downloads they say it is optimum or normal. In fact they dont even promise 24 hour availability.

I need to test how fast my memory sticks are operating. I have 512mb x 2 installed and they are supposed to be operating at 400 mhz, but if they aren't operating at that speed, then I want to install 1GB x 2 because my system will not handle that much memory at 400 mhz speed (I already tried), but should be able to at the 333 mhz speed. If anyone know a way to check the actual memory speed capabilities and settings of my system, I would be very grateful. Thank you all.

A:How do I test memory speed?

I found another thread on TechSpot that mentioned the utility I was looking for, it's called CPU-Z and I highly recommend to determine what your system can handle for RAM, etc. Now my question is, what is the maximum speed latency my system can handle? My CPU has bus speed of 100 MHz with Rated FSB speed of 400.0 MHz. So that means the fastest this CPU can handle is approximately PC2100 without any wasted bandwidth?

My system can't handle dual-channel BTW. Since it is non-dual channel will the increased bandwidth of my current memory (400 or PC3200) help in this regard? Thank you all for reading my post.

A:internet speed test

you can use any, some will be accurate while others may not be at the time you run the test - but can give you a general idea... one thing that the speed test sites dont really tell you is this... the test takes under a minute to run, so while your speeds may be 9.5 for that minute that doesnt mean that your isp is truly allowing that speed for a long time period. Some isp's will throttle you and slow you down after a certain timeframe - which is crazy I know, but sometimes true.

Hey guys, I'm new to the forum, was looking here a few days ago - my broadband connection became really slow for no apparent reason and I wanted to test my speed - I was told about this new one on one of the forums called Streetstats, which not only gives you your broadband speed but also tells you what speeds your neighbours are getting - genius!

Could be ISP issues, that would be my first suspicion.
Register at DSLReports and run their Line Quality Tests. It's best to run this test with a direct wired connection to eliminate any wireless issues from the results. It's useful many times to run this test several times, and we'd like to see each of the results. Post the results link from the top of the test display page for each test run here.

The link to post is near the top of the page and looks like:

If you wish to post this result to a forum, please copy/paste this URL
http://www.dslreports.com/linequality/nil/2357195 <- sample only, yours will obviously be different!
and your IP will be disguised.

Copy/paste that link here.

Note: You will have to enable PING (ICMP) request response either in your router (if you have one), or in your computer's firewall for direct modem connections. This is very important to get the most important part of the test to run.

I recommend this one for a more accurate speedtest as many of the others (not all) tend to spike and give incorrect readings. For instance speetest.net.

Enjoy!

What program do y'all suggest for running a speed test on a windows computer?

The computer in question is maxed out at 1 gig ram a win xp and possibly old enough for a new os

I've heard of like double my speed and a computer being "100% faster" but I don't trust it or the like --this program may be used on a vista system as well

A:Computer speed test?

I'm not sure I completely understand your question but if you're just looking to benchmark the system you can use software like:
Futuremark - world's most popular benchmarks and PC performance tests - Benchmarks
PassMark PerformanceTest - PC benchmark software

Hey, what can I do to speed up download times.
I have a 54mbps SMC 2804WBRP-G-CA Router upstairs on which I have a wireless connection to this desktop downstairs through a Linksys WUSB54GC wireless-G USB adapter. The signal strength is "Very good" and consistently 54 mbps. My question is how can my slow download times be possible because of this. Does anyone have any tips? Thank you.

Hi guys Since I moved house no ISP s provide cable in my area so I have had to make do with receiving my broadband through the telephone line However I am having problems with connecting to the internet on my PS All devices in my house connect to the internet via a wireless connection and although the PS is fairly far away from the router it test Connection PS3 Speed still receives around - signal strength The problem I get is that when I run a connection speed test through the PS it normally times out and reports as quot failed quot if i leave PS3 Connection Speed test it on this screen it does eventually change from failed to report a very low d l speed I can usually solve this problem however by manually changing the channel that the router uses alternating between and until i find one that works I will then get around - mbps until the next day or at least a few hours when I have to repeat this again Although it may sound like a simple enough work around PS3 Connection Speed test it is frustrating and doesn t always work earlier for example I could not find a channel which enables a usable d l speed Does any one know what the cause of this is or better yet how to solve it permanently The router modem is a netgear ADSL DGN SP and was provided by my ISP I would imagine its pretty lame but I don t know if replacing it would solve the problem Thanks in advance nbsp

A:PS3 Connection Speed test

on a further note, could it be anything to do with the router using 802.11n whilst the PS3 (i believe) still uses 802.11b/g, it should be backwards compatible shouldn't it?

I noticed the last time I reinstalled my OS that my cdrw didn't seem to working right. There seems to be something wrong with the speed it spins at.
I have a Memorex 52x25x52. But it's only a little over a year old.

I use my cdrw quite a bit for looking at stuff I have put on cd's, or writing to cd's to save stuff. I don't use it for games or any programs that require me to put the cd in to make the program work.

I have replace 3 cdrw's in the last 4 years. Why don't these things last a little longer?

i used the windows network speed test as shown below.
what is the network delay and what controls it?
the consecutive readings never match.
yesterday i upgraded my isp speed to 8 MBPS
are these readings expected of the service ?

A:net work speed test help

Is this a Windows 8 app?

The Network Delay is just a different term for Ping.

The readings look right to me for a connection at 8mb/s

I just bought a Dell i14z laptop, and I've been getting speeds of 25-35 Mbps at the hotel I'm staying at. My other laptop (Gateway NV73) is usually between 1-3 Mbps, but lately it is less than 1. Before I bought my new laptop, I assumed that the slow speeds were the norm on the public WiFi networks I use. Today, I updated the wireless driver from the Gateway website, and immediately I was getting 20+ Mbps, which was faster than I've ever seen from Speedtest for that laptop. After restarting a few hours later, it is now back to < 1 Mbps. How can I get the same fast speeds on my Gateway that I'm getting on my Dell? Thanks in advance.

Hello, I am using a HP mini 110-1000 notebook and my wireless network connection speed is constantly changing from 36.0 Mbps to 24 Mbps and then 18.0 Mbps and keeps going back to 36 etc. My signal strength is showing 4 bars instead 5 and I am close to my router. I have done the turn off modem and router and has returned back to 54Mbps but after a few minutes it starts dropping to 34 Mbps. Its been like this for almost 2 months now and I need some help.

A:Dropping 54.0 mbps - 18 mbps?

When that happened to me it was because I had the wrong driver. If you are using an integrated wireless adapter get the latest driver for it from HP's web site. If it is an external card get the latest driver from its manufacturer's web site. Even if you have the latest driver make sure that you install it again, as the installed version may be corrupted.

I want to measure the speed of LAN vs WLAN on my Dell XPS 15 (W 8.1).
It's clear that my Gigabit-LAN is faster than wifi, but by how much?
I use LAN at home, and WLAN when I'm away.
Does a program exist to compare the two?

PS
It takes quite long before the computer "sees" the "new" LAN connection.
LAN is through a USB3.0-LAN adapter (the Dell has no LAN socket).

I was worried about my computer overheating and the fans not running properly.

I have done a SpeedFan check after downloading and installing the program.

These are my results (below). Can anybody tell me if these seem about normal? Thanks.

After having problems with IE 11 on my old eMachine with Win-10 (Home)/ Comcast server I installed Chrome. It works good but the speed test resulted in 1/3rd the speed of IE 11 or FireFox. Several typical dead end suggestions (Internet ?sperts) I assume that Chrome has some setup problems, but cannot find the cure. Any suggestions? BTW, both IE and FF run ~125 Mps, Chrome~45.
