Creating Wifi hotspot using SECOND wifi adapter

Q: Creating Wifi hotspot using SECOND wifi adapter

So, there are many articles out there that will show you how to use cmd prompt to create a wifi hotspot (eg: this article Internet Connection Sharing - Create WiFi HotSpot)

However, is there anyway to do this with TWO separate wifi adapters? That is, use one adapter to connect to your router and the other to act as the router? Some articles seem to indicate this is the ideal setup but no one seems to specify how to control which wifi adapter is used to create the wifi hostpot in command prompt.

Thanks for any help.

If I can get the basics to work, the next step is to try to integrate a VPN so that I can basically use my PC as a VPN router (but with no physical ethernet connection).

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/directdownload.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hi Cromsy,

Welcome to Vista Forums!

Unfortunately, it isn't as simple as that. You are connected to the router fine with your computer, but that tells us nothing about the ipod because wireless is off (but that's not the whole story either - you need something extra to do what you want). The following article should tell you what you need and how to do it: How to Connect iPod Touch to Windows 7 Ad-hoc Wireless Network. Although it says Windows 7, there are procedures for Vista as well (and the software will work with Vista).

I hope this helps.

Good luck!

I have Windows 7 Ultimate 32 bit. I am using a wireless modem and I don't have any router.I surfed google and found a lot of software and tutorial to create a wifi hotspot but none of them works.

To create hotspot using only Windows 7, I followed this tutorial but I don't have "Set Up a wireless ad hoc network" option.

If you see the following pictures, u will get the idea :

From the looks of it the Intel WiMax driver doesn't have an updated Windows WHQL driver. Because of this it also doesn't have the Microsoft virtual WiFi miniport adaptor which is what the adaptor uses to create the virtual access point.

I can't see which version of WiMax adaptor you are using but you might try Windows update for an updated driver for this adaptor.

When you install the updated WHQL driver you will see the virtual driver in the Device Manager and on the Network Adaptors page.

After that it should be easy to set up the access point using commands or connectify software.

Hey,

I've got a Nintendo DS, and I'd like to get it hooked on the internet.
So I bought a wifi usb stick so I can create a hotspot, we've got Wireless Internet at home.. But my DS won't get trough the WPA2 encryption.
Since I'm not pretty experienced with network and creating hotspots, this step is a problem for me.. I've been trying for months now, but I can't figure it out.

Can anybody help me creating a Wifi hotspot? I need to have it open (unsecured) or with a WEP password.. it just needs to give my Nintendo DS access to the Internet..
I've got the following wifi stick:
Tenda W311U
And I run Windows 7 (And Ubuntu, help for Ubuntu would be appreciated (since Ubuntu is my main OS), but how to do it in Windows 7 is enough )

Thanks in advance.

I am currently stationed in Germany, and live in a village that has horrible internet. I cannot stream netflix, hulu, and downloads take several hours.

Is there a way to combine the internet that my cell phone receives and the wifi router I have at home to increase speed?

I have the ability to create a wifi hotspot from my cell phone if this helps.

Just something I thought up in my head, and wanted to find out if it is possible. Thanks in advance.

Hi there,

I have a new problem that has just cropped up today. I am no longer able to connect to public wifi or my phone's wireless hotspot. My laptop either will not connect or connect with limited access. It has connected without issue in the past and as soon as I returned home it connected to my wifi here.

What I did notice is I am connected to an unidentified network with no internet access in addition to my home wireless network:
Specs:
Acer Aspire S7 392
Windows 8.1 64 bit
Intel Dual Band Wireless 7260 (driver updated)
Disabled my firewall and antivirus

I just connected to my phone's hotspot again and here is what I am coming up with:
Attachment 57082

And when I run ipconfig/renew
Attachment 57083

Any ideas what could be causing this?

Hi there,

Need some pretty quick help here if possible! I have a USB external wifi antenna, and my laptop has an internal one. My aim is to basically receive internet through the external one and great a little hotspot by the internal one. I was wondering if this was possible?

I'd tried with Ad-hoc networks but for some reason other devices couldn't connect to the network I created. I'm just wondering what I could've done wrong!

Anyways, I hope this makes sense! If anyone can help, it would be much appreciated! I will award all help with rep !

All the best,

Ok, you only require one wireless NIC in order to create a hosted wireless network, you can receive and send the wireless through a single NIC. You can use either one for this but you don't need both.

You can use the command prompt to set this up but using the connectify software might be a better choice if you want to connect on start up. You can also do this with a virtual router, take your pick.

Connectify For Windows 8

This one shows the manual set up using the command prompt.

Or you can install a virtual router.

Ad-Hoc requires that you restart the session each time.

Connectify pro has an auto start option that does this but it's a paid version, connectify lite is free but I'm not sure if has auto start.

Hi, My laptop has a very weak wifi detection. Only when the wifi signal is very strong can it detect the wifi. I tried contacting HP regarding the same. They said it could be a loose connection with the wifi antenna. I have been waiting for the custumer service in my area to contact me(like HP promised!!!) for quite a long time now . Now I am in urgent need to get this fixed. I was wondering if an external wifi adapter would solve this issue. Mine is a Windows 10 laptop. Model no: ab030tx (pavilion). If an external adapter works, what would you suggest? (I am confused as a lot of products available in market only convert the laptop to a hotspot)

Run Xirrus Wi-Fi Inspector

If you cannot access the internet with this PC, then you will need to copy the program across to the faulty PC
Save the file to a USB flash drive or other removable media. Plug it into the working computer with internet access and copy the file to the faulty PC and install the program.
You will now need to take a screen shot and copy that back to the working PC and attach the screen shot in a reply on the forum here.

post which SSID name is yours, its located in the list, under network "Adapter Name" (1st column)
Note:
For a reliable (or robust as the Xirrus user guide says) wireless connection you need a signal of about -70 dBm or better. "A desirable signal level for a robust Wi-Fi connection will be green".
note: the signal level is a negative number, so for example -88 is worst and -40 is better

I have a HP Notebook 15. I restarted my laptop this morning and when it came back on, all options for connecting to the internet via WiFi were gone. I am able to connect to the internet via ethernet cable, and everything works this way. There are no options whatsoever to connect to WiFi or reset the connection or anything, however the WiFi itself is working because other devices in the house are connected to it. I followed a HP technical support online page, which provided step-by-step instructions of various ways to reconnect to WiFi but nothing worked. I tried restarting the computer, updating the driver software, making sure it wasn't in airplane mode, and troubleshooting. Nothing worked. What should I try next?

Everyone's had the problem of wanting to disable the wifi miniport, or enable it to share wifi.

I have a different problem. I would like to change which wireless device the wifi miniport uses, as the external USB wireless adapter I was using died. I cannot see the wifi miniport adapter without that device attached, it seems. I don't even know if the wifi adapter even as options to select which wireless card to use even if I could get it to appear.

Is there a way to do this without having to resort to reinstalling Windows 7?

I am fairly familiar with netsh. No command line option seems to be available to switch network adapters for the wifi miniport.

It also appears that it will simply not switch to the only wireless network adapter detected, and I know it will host a virtual wifi network, I've done ICS/AdHoc before.

A:How does one change which wifi adapter the wifi miniport uses?

I tried the solution in this link: How to change default Microsoft Virtual WiFi miniport adapter?

This did not work.

Actually my wifi adapter can catch all other wifi signal except my wifi router.

A:my notebook wifi adapter don't get my wifi router

There are several resons.1. The wifi signal might be too weak at the point where the computer is.2. Other device radiation/signals might be blocking it.3. Your router signal might be hodden (check EWS of router).4. Signal broadcasting might have been turned off on router. Since other signals are found on the computer, there shouldnt be a issue with your couputer.

Hi,
I would like to let you know the connection will be affected by distance, blocks or wifi connection stability.

You can update the wifi adapter driver manually to test the issue. Meanwhile, please ensure your host can access Internet successfully.

Did you check to make sure your WiFi card supports it.

Run this command to find out if it supports Hosted Network, If it says yes then it should work. What commands did you use.

Code:

I'm looking for a hotspot router that will connect to 4G tower and allow 4-10 WIFI connections. I have a T-mobile account that requires a sim or. I've been using a clearspot made by Sierra Wireless, but Sprint is discontinuing in Nov. I'm connected now using T-mobile and a Nexus 7 mobile. Since a Hotspot is suppose to be a mobile connection a antenna would b nice. I've been looking and there doesn't seem to be many choices or a confusion of routers and gateways. The ZTE is a dog and the Sierra wireless is ok. Hoping for some pros and cons.

Hi guys,
I have an issue I would like to resolve. I will try to be as clear and precised as possible.
I'm only allowed to one device to an internet. My laptop connects directly to internet WiFi. So the laptop (Windows 10) serves as a hotspot. But I have two other devices I want to connect. A PC (Windows 7) via Ethernet and a smartphone via WiFi.
Right now, I can either share the WiFi in laptop to the PC by bridging, or to smartphone via hospot, but NOT both at the same time. I want to connect both like this;

What should I do?

Thanks

I have 2 wireless network adapters - internal and external.
So hotspot can be created via two ways (but I don't know how?):
1. Create hotspot on second one while using 1st one for wireless connection.
2. Use the same wifi card by using "AP mode". This feature is supported by Connectify but I don't want to use this software (it causes driver problem) and I don't know any other software.

I'm trying to set up a virtual hotspot (like with the program Connectify) to allow my Nintendo DS to connect to the internet through my PC. Connectify would have worked if it weren't for the fact that the DS isn't compatible with Ad Hoc mode nor is it compatible with any form of security other than WEP (the program uses WPA2).

So, are there any programs that can allow me to create a virtual hotspot with WEP? I mainly run Windows 7 but I have access to Linux Mint.

Connectify is a free and easy to use software router for Windows 7 computers. With Connectify, users can wirelessly share any Internet connection: a cable modem, a cellular card, or even another Wi-Fi network. Other Wi-Fi enabled devices including laptops, smart phones, music players, and gaming systems can see and join your Connectify hotspot just like any other Wi-Fi access point and are kept safe and secure by password-protected WPA2 Encryption.

Sad. So much in Windows 7 lies just beneath the surface waiting to be discovered. Opportunistic charlatans write a simple GUI facade and claim that functionality for their own. This is a prime example. With a few simple console commands Windows 7 can do everything that this "connectify" thing can. Try this:

1) Start, type "cmd" and press ctrl+shift+enter. That will run an elevated command prompt and may trigger a User Account Control window.
2) Type "netsh wlan set hostednetwork mode=allow ssid=<name> key=<password>" and press enter. Substitute <name> for the name of the access point you want to create and <password> as it's WPA2-Personal AES passphrase.
3) Type "netsh wlan start hostednetwork" and press enter.
4) Note that an access point named <name> as appeared on other wifi enabled devices nearby.

The same caveats as "connectify" apply: WPA2-Personal encryption using the AES cypher ONLY and you must use a WHQL-certified WiFi adapter and driver.

To disable the access point open an elevated command prompt as in step 1 above, type "netsh wlan set hostednetwork mode=disallow" and press enter.

I'm trying to share my computers internet connection with my iPhone and I'm trying to use Connectify for that. I had this in my computer before and it worked fine but recently I had to re-install my computer. Now I'm trying to connect to the WiFi hot spot created by Connectify but I can't seem to get a connection. When iPhone gets connected, it retrieves an IP out of the local network(164.XX.XX.XX) thus avoiding me going to the internet from the Phone. How do I go about this?

A:Connectify wifi hotspot issue

Hello,

Try disabling your in-built Windows Firewall or 3rd party program firewall (if there's any) for debugging purpose. See this link to help you troubleshoot the issue.

I'm pretty much a novice when it comes to networking so I'd really appreciate some help here I run a pool tour out of hotel venues and we're building a system to allow a laptop at each pool table running win XP to feed scores back to the laptop on the tournament desk running Win I've had no problems connecting these together and sharing folders using a Workgroup and an old Linksys wireless router The Win laptop is connected via ethernet cable and and Wifi wired router? hotspot the XP laptops are all connected to the linksys via wireless At this point nothing has an internet connection as the linksys router has no connection to an ISP and this is fine - so far so good The problem I have is that the Win laptop on the tournament desk not the XP Wifi hotspot and wired router? laptops at the pool tables also needs an internet connection So my idea for this is to connect to the hotels wireless hotspot whilst keeping the connection to the linksys via the ethernet cable I need to test all this before getting to Wifi hotspot and wired router? the hotel so to try and mimic the set up I've simply tried to connect to my own ISP's wireless router I use SKY Broadband in the UK I can connect to my wireless router but cannot get any internet pages maybe the linksys is telling my laptop I have no internet connection I read about bridging the connections so tried this I then got an internet connection but lost the connection to the other laptops via the linksys I rebooted and it switched the other way round - no internet but access to the linksys I'm not sure if what I'm doing is a valid thing to be able to do or even if my home wireless network will behave in the same way as the hotels wireless hotspot As I'm a novice when it comes to networking I'd really appreciate it if someone could offer some advice The attachedd PDF has a diagram showing what I'm trying to do

A:Wifi hotspot and wired router?

If you open a command prompt and type ipconfig /all you will get information on all the active ethernet adapters on the windows 7 laptop - wireless and wired. Only the IPv4 addresses need to be considered.

In all probability, your ISP's router will give you an IP address (as a DHCP server) in the range 192.168.0.2 - 192.168.0.255 - usually reserving 192.168.0.1 for the router itself.

The linksys may also be giving out addresses by DHCP in the same range.

You need to set up the linksys to use addresses in a different range, for example 192.168.35.2 -192.168.35.255 with the linksys itself as 192.168.35.1 (the '35' can be anything between 1 and 255).

This way it will be unlikely that there will be any conflict between IP addresses that the linksys gives your XP and Win7 laptops network and the internet connection IP address. (but check with the hotel first what their IP range/ranges are, just in case!)

You will need to set up another work network (not homegroup - it would be best disabled since XP cannot use this type of network) for the wired connection on the Windows 7 laptop from the network and sharing centre - set up a new connection or network.

You will need to make all laptops members of the same workgroup - you could call this "Tournament" or some other relevant name other than the default "MSHOME" on XP or "WORKGROUP" on Windows 7.

Make a shared folder e.g. shared as "Pool" on each of the XP machines, and make sure that network file sharing is enabled on the XP machines.

You should not share anything on your windows 7 machine since it will be connected to a public network and the internet.

The linksys probably has a MAC address filter, which can be set to deny access to any PC except the laptops themselves. The MAC address also appears in the output of ipconfig /all ( it works the same in XP as in Windows 7) when run on each laptop.

Make sure that each of the \\XP-PC-name\Pool shares is visible by the windows 7 explorer and you should be ready to go.

I just recently upgraded my laptop to Windows clean install to see what it has to offer and so far everything works fine Except last evening during a class I teach I needed a wifi connection so Hidden Blackberry Q10 Hotspot wifi I enabled the Hotspot feature my BB Q But its Blackberry Q10 wifi Hotspot Hidden broadcast SSID was not showing as an available wifi network There was a strong Hidden Network appearing on the list but I did not want to try it as I was in a public environment A student in the class enabled their iPhone's hotspot which I could see and used that instead The same student and others could see my Blackberry SSID on their phones When I got home I checked with my wife's iPad and she could see the BB Hotspot SSID and successfully logged into it She then enabled the Hotspot feature on her iPhone and its SSID was displayed on my Lenovo laptop's available networks I then manually typed in the SSID name into the strong Hidden Network displayed on the available networks list and I could then connect to it without problems I also used a network sniffing tool on he same laptop inSSIDer and it displays the Q SSID being broadcast and is not a hidden network But it just will NOT display its identity on the laptop's wifi list of quot available networks quot - The Q is broadcasting its SSID as other devices see it - The laptop sees the SSID using the inSSIDer utility and it does not appear to be hidden - I can see and access other phone's hotspot SSID's with the same laptop - My list of available networks shows the BB SSID as as Hidden Network without a name - Everything worked fine with Windows on the same laptop Any ideas on how to fix this Thanks -

Hello,
I have been running Windows 10 Mobile on the latest Production Release, non-Insider, and my Mobile Hotspot won't work over WiFi. I can still use it over Bluetooth but it is slow compared to WiFi.
I am using AT&T with 5 GB of data with my Lumia 950 XL. I was able to use the Mobile Hotspot with my Lumia 1520 and 830 without any problems.
I did try changing the APN as recommended by a user here who spoke with AT&T customer service but that didn't work at all.
I appreciate the help and input.
Thank you.

A:Lumia 950 XL - Mobile Hotspot not transmitting via WiFi

I'm on AT&T with a 950 XL so I can say it does work. I did have some issues with some Production Release versions. I think it was because of the options to enable the PC to enable the hotspot. Turn that off and it should work.

There is more than one way to do this but all require that you are using a certified Windows 7 driver which installs the Msoft Virtual WiFi adaptor which is used to set up the hosted wireless network.

The real problem with this is that if you already have a wireless connection then why would you need to create an Ad Hoc network in the first place?

I guess if you were somehow limited to a single connection it might come in handy, or if you needed to amplify the signal. You can't share through an Ethernet connection, it only works wireless to wireless.

You can set this up using the command prompt or you can install the connectify software which makes it easier for some. The links below explains the details about setting this up, take your pick, the last one is a download for a virtual router if that's what you wanted.

Dear users,
I just signed up for an account here at your site. Thanks for maintaining such a useful and friendly site.
I tried to set my laptop (Compaq CQ40) running Vista basic as Wifi hotspot, as I have an ethernet router without . When setup, the network appears on the system, but I'm unable to connect my smartphone (Samsung S duos). When I add wifi network in mobile , it says "Out of range".

I tried using Linux mint 14 Cinnamon, for the same, but unable to have any success

I'll be very grateful if some one can help me out .. thanks in advance

Hi I have recently been having problems trying to get a GHz hotspot up and running with windows with the latest Anniversary Update I need it because I live in student accommodation and have no control over my Wifi which is slow and unreliable however the internet from the wall is pretty good and my Hotspot 5GHz Windows Adaptor Wifi for 10 pc is on pretty much anyway It really needs to be on the GHz band as there are too many other things on GHz that drastically effect performance I have bought two Wifi Adaptors The first one was a Mediatek RT AC which worked perfectly fine using the Mediatek Wifi Adaptor for 5GHz Hotspot Windows 10 Driver until the anniversary update now it won't work at all not even for wifi device manager just says the device is not working properly I have tried many many drivers and am pretty confident that it just isn't compatible with Wifi Adaptor for 5GHz Hotspot Windows 10 the latest build of Windows at least without a Wifi Adaptor for 5GHz Hotspot Windows 10 driver update which is unlikely Next I bought a TP-Link Archer UH AC Not expecting any issues from a big and reputable company and was going to use the Soft-AP feature only to find that doesn't work at all in windows or at least the current build the adaptor works just fine for Wifi but that's not my intended use for it I then found out that Windows Anniversary comes with the functionality to create a GHz Wifi Hotspot built in but non of my reasonably popular adaptors work with it or through their own software so my question is what adaptors actually will work reliably with this feature Most Wifi adaptors seem to have very little support from both Microsoft and the manufactures and there aren't really any models I can find that are not just refreshes of old hardware Really don't want to take a gamble on a third adaptor Thanks in advanced

Hi, I am on holiday at the moment and trying to set my lap top as a wifi hotspot.

I have two identical Acer Aspire one Laptops both running windows 7. I can only connect to the internet in the hotel room using one wired connection. So I wanted to set up one Laptop up so as a wifi hotspot to connect the other to it wirelessly and share the internet connection.

I can create the addhoc connection and turn on ICS no problem. I can connect the client laptop to the server but no matter what I do I can not get internet connection sharing to work!

I have even tried MaryFi and Connectivity software but that does not work either.

Can anyone help me out please?

You do realize that an Ad Hoc network is sharing a wireless connection to another wireless client?

You are trying to use ICS to create an Ad Hoc network. This isn't a supported configuration although I have seen a few people get this to work but unfortunately it's not repeatable, it's also not reliable even if they do get it to work. It's basically not a supported configuration so it's very unlikely you can get this to work reliably if at all, but if you do find a way then please report the procedure here.
