Temporarily disable all background processes and updates

Q: Temporarily disable all background processes and updates

I want to play an HD video though a projector on my laptop. The laptop plays it fine, but I'm worried about things like Windows updates, virus scans and other processes suddenly slowing it down or displaying messages on the screen while the audience are watching it. I know how to disable some of these things manually, but its easy to forget something and I was just wondering if there is some sort of "minimal" mode where only the bare essentials are running? For reasons I won't bore you with, burning to DVD or Blu Ray will not work in this instance, a hardware media player might, but I want to explore this option first.

Thanks in advance!

Preferred Solution: Temporarily disable all background processes and updates

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/directdownload.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Boot a Linux Live CD with a video player. There may even be a Linux distro optimized for the purpose. Check out DistroWatch.com: Put the fun back into computing. Use Linux, BSD.

Hi,

I'm going to run the scans so that I can get help here, but I can't for the life of me figure out how to temporarily disable my McAfee antivirus or my Spybot S&D so that I can run the scans.

I do have to do that, right?

Thanks

A:Need to temporarily disable my AV?

Hello and Welcome to TSF.

It is not really necessary to disable them for our initial scanning tools, just be sure there are no scheduled scans while running the tools.

Please post/attach the logs in a new thread, as this one shall be closed.

A:Disable firewall temporarily

Hello and welcome!! I moved your post from Intro's to here.We would need to know which firewall you are using to help you disable it. Or you can look trough here. How To Temporarily Disable Your Anti-virus, Firewall And Anti-malware ProgramsBut this may be easier.........Older versions have vulnerabilities that malicious sites can use to exploit and infect your system. Please follow these steps to remove older version Java components and update:Download the latest version of Java Runtime Environment (JRE) Version 6 and save it to your desktop.Look for "JDK 6 Update 20 (JDK or JRE)".Click the "Download JRE" button to the right.Select your Platform: "Windows".Select your Language: "Multi-language".Read the License Agreement, and then check the box that says: "Accept License Agreement".Click Continue and the page will refresh.Under Required Files, check the box for Windows Offline Installation, click the link below it and save the file to your desktop.Close any programs you may have running - especially your web browser.Go to Start > Settings > Control Panel, double-click on Add/Remove Programs and remove all older versions of Java.Check (highlight) any item with Java Runtime Environment (JRE or J2SE) in the name.Click the Remove or Change/Remove button and follow the onscreen instructions for the Java uninstaller.Repeat as many times as necessary to remove each Java versions.Reboot your computer once all Java components are removed. Then from your desktop double-click on jre-6u20-windows-i586.exe to install the newest version. If using Windows Vista and the installer refuses to launch due to insufficient user permissions, then Run As Administrator. When the Java Setup - Welcome window opens, click the Install > button. If offered to install a Toolbar, just uncheck the box before continuing unless you want it.-- Starting with Java 6u10, the uninstaller incorporated in each new release uses Enhanced Auto update to automatically remove the previous version when updating to a later update release. It will not remove older versions, so they will need to be removed manually.-- Java is updated frequently. If you want to be automatically notified of future updates, just turn on the Java Automatic Update feature and you will not have to remember to update when Java releases a new version.Note: The Java Quick Starter (JQS.exe) adds a service to improve the initial startup time of Java applets and applications. To disable the JQS service if you don't want to use it, go to Start > Control Panel > Java > Advanced > Miscellaneous and uncheck the box for Java Quick Starter. Click Ok and reboot your computer.

I have two internal 750GB HDs - one is partitioned to C (Windows) and the other D (data). The other is E and simply a mirror backup of D which I do once a day.

The problem is that the E drive goes to sleep after XX minutes but some applications or processes (e.g. Empty Recycle Bin) want to wake it up before they work, which means a delay of ~10 seconds as the E drive spins up - very annoying.

How can I temporarily disable the drive until I need it for the once a day backup?

Thanks.

Hello all, I'm about to have a meltdown caused by Win updates. I'm trying to recover data from a 8TB drive, and it's taking an unusually long amount of time (1+ week), but it's progressing and about done. The drive in question is on it's last leg and the BIOS fails SMART, I don't know if I'll have another chance to run this drive for a week. Is there any way to completely disable the reboot until this process is done? I googled this a few times, and there were a few things that made sense, but they were somewhat dated and comments led me to believe that policy updates no longer allowed this. In a corporate environment, auto reboots are a cool idea, but for home use it's not such a swell idea..

Hello,

I was curious if anybody knew this. I could not find it anywhere and had never heard of it. Is there a way to temporarily disable an email account? Like a pause button. So if I 'pause' a specific account (I have approx. 6 email accounts in my Outlook, mostly POP3 & Exchange), when I hit Send/Receive it will not be included, but if I 'unpause' it shall be included. Is there a feature like this?

If this is possible I'd like to implement this in a family members of mine computer. So it must be 'stupid proof' if it is.

Thanks!

Win XP on HP Media center.
About every 5 seconds my cursor locks for about a second and then is freed up. I think that there is a background process doing something but I have not been able to find what this process could be. I have used Win Task Manager but nothing obvious shows up. Also, no unusual files are being created. Is there swr that can track something like this?

A:background processes

well it could be due to low memory (how much memory are you running)?

also try freemeter it is a great little program that uses a lot less resources than task manager and can tell you exactly what is running in your system.

is your hard drive light blinking a lot during these lockups?

I don't see anything that needs much fixing here. I never liked the Norton products. I find that they themselves are huge resource hogs. If you like Norton, you may keep them. Otherwise, you have alternatives.

You can get AVG as a antivirus program and ZoneAlarm as you firewall.

Try disabling programs that you don't need. Go to Start->Run and type in msconfig and hit OK. Go to the Startup tab and disable programs you don't need - make sure you know what they are for before disabling any of them. Don't want to disable something you need. For a list of programs that are safe to disable, take a look at the Startup Section.

Please print out or copy this page to Notepad. Make sure to work through the fixes in the exact order it is mentioned below. If there's anything that you don't understand, ask your question(s) before proceeding with the fixes. You should not have any open browsers when you are following the procedures below.

Go to My Computer->Tools/View->Folder Options->View tab and make sure that 'Show hidden files and folders' (or 'Show all files') is enabled. Also make sure that Display the contents of System Folders' is checked. Windows XP's search feature is a little different. When you click on 'All files and folders' on the left pane, click on the 'More advanced options' at the bottom. Make sure that Search system folders, Search hidden files and folders, and Search subfolders are checked.

For the options that you checked/enabled earlier, you may uncheck them after your log is clean. If we ask you to fix a program that you use or want to keep, please post back saying that (we don't know every program that exists, so we may tell you to delete a program that we think is bad to keep).

If you have a fast internet connection (broadband), run an online virus scan at TrendMicro. Make sure to select the Autoclean option. Otherwise, make sure your antivirus program has the latest definitions and run a full system scan.

Make sure to close any open browsers. Run a scan in HijackThis. Check each of the following and hit 'Fix checked' (after checking them) if they still exist (make sure not to miss any):

R3 - Default URLSearchHook is missing
O16 - DPF: Serome Web2Phone - http://www.dialpad.com/applet/vscp.cab

Do you set this? If not, fix it in HijackThis:

R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer,SearchURL = http://sharempeg.com/find/

Restart and post a new HijackThis log file so we can make sure it's clean.

A:Windows 10 Home disable automatic updates, enable updates on demand

Those are good instructions. Clear and concise.

Hi,

You could try using this link to help you decide: http://www.sysinfo.org/startuplist.php?type=&filter=&count=100&offset=0

Search for the letters before the .exe - example:

lexpps

N lexpps.exe For Lexmark printers. From Lexmark: "This enables bi-directional printing over a peer to peer network. If the printer is connected directly to your PC, the file is not used, (or should not be used) at all". It is known that firewalls can however alert you to "lexpps.exe" requesting server privileges

A:Too many processes running in background

50 processes is not necessarily too many. What you need to do is go through them all one by one. Do a search on the internet using the process name to see if you can find out anything about it and if it needs to be running. If you not sure about a particular process, post back here with the details and we can help you out.

Okay, I am literally a noob at computers, but this was happening to me earlier, I had fixed the problem by disabling BITS and HPconnect Remote Access. But after a few hours, it began creating more background processes. I deleted the HPconnect app entirely and it continues to create more of them. The same goes for the Problem Reporting process. Please help! I've searched to find the answer, but I couldn't.

Me and my brother both use the same pc, and i don't really install much on it, a couple of games and MSN, but he tends to clutter the thing up with endless background tasks. And rather than having to tell him to clear up all his useless programs or do it myself (and get moaned at) i'd like to create a user account for myself thats clean of all of it, but not change anything on his account. I tried making a user account for myself only to find that the processes also ran on my account, is there any way for me to make an account that will start the computer up like if it was entirely brand new? (without of course, reinstalling windows and using my own separate version). Thanks for help in advance.

A:sharing background processes -.-

Hi Luk07..

basically, you'll need to edit the registry whilst in his profile to change all his specific programs from the HKLM../..Run key to HKCU../..Run so they only run for him. This can be tricky to do and you also have to consider anti-virus, firewall and any other vital software which you may need for your profile.

You're probably better of running a trial version of TuneUp Utlities 2007 which you can use to edit the startup items from the comfort of an easy to use interface.

Hope that helps

I am running Windows XP Home Edition Version 2002 Service Pack 3.

When clicking on any hit within the search results in Google (or Bing) using IE8 (or Firefox v5.0.1) instead of going to the page listed in the search results I get redirected to some other page (at times the results scroll through a series of pages). On rare occasions the link does work correctly. In addition to this issue, background IE processes are launching, oftentimes with sound but an IE window never opens.

We tested this same computer on a different wireless network and got the same bad behavior.

We've tried lots of spyware cleanup utilities with no success. Hoping someone here can help!

OK how my processes are running on your machine? I have 35, it went up 2 from 7100 to 7127 and not sure why.

I was also wondering what people think are safe services to disable or set to manual. I do the basics and keep no software auto start with windows. When I was using XP I consulted blackvipers web site and a little to medicated currently to really do more then this post.

A:Processes --how many? safe to disable

I have 67 running.

I tend to leave programs I use a lot (Word, Photoshop, uTorrent, etc.) idle in the background. That way I can access them instantly and they don't use up much memory or cpu.

The problem is, every time I turn on my computer, I have to go into Task Manager to end about FIFTY processes I don't want being run.
How do I make it so that those processes won't get activated when the computer is turned on so that I don't have to keep doing that every single time.

A:How do you disable processes permanently?

After going through this myself, from WIn98 thru WinXP Pro, and trying all the recommendations recieved, the only one I have found that works is a nice little program called winpatrol www.winpatrol.com
It will allow you to stop any operation from loading, tell you all you want to know about the programs loading and running on your system, and keep track of anything trying to install or load onto your system. The freeby is nice, however I recommend that you pay the small fee and get the full program. Read the help file, and start stopping all that resource drain I'm sure you have.
Hope this helps.

My computer is slow and my hard drive is full, so I'm trying to troubleshoot all potential problems.

What startup processes can I disable? Screenshots from msconfig:

If you're so inclined, what processes are running that I don't need? Screenshots from Task Manager:

Also, what the hell is filling up my 14GB C:/? I have barely any music, my photos and other large folders are on the other side of my partitioned drive, my Program Files are only taking up about 2GB. My Documents are only another 2GB.

There's a Windows folder on my C:/ that is another 3GB with unintelligble files and folder names.

I guess the real quesiton is how to safely move stuff like Program Files and ITunes Music to the other partitioned drive- I don't want to confuse the hell out of all the existing communication channels between programs.

Help!

Again I appreciate your help figuring this out. Need this PC connected to the Internet without concern for what rogue programs might be doing.

Hello, Welcome to BleepingComputer.
I'm nasdaq and will be helping you.

If you can please print this topic it will make it easier for you to follow the instructions and complete all of the necessary steps.
===

I need to see a DDS.txt log. Not the one you posted. If you still have the tool just run it and post the DDS.txt log.

Download DDS by sUBs from one of the following links if you no longer have it available. Save it to your desktop.

1: DDS.scr (Not recommended if you use Chrome to download this .scr file. Use the other options.)
2: DDS.pif
3: DDS.COM

Double click on the DDS icon, allow it to run.
A small box will open, with an explanation about the tool. No input is needed, the scan is running.
Notepad will open with the results.
Follow the instructions that pop up for posting the results.
Please note: You may have to disable any script protection running if the scan fails to run.

Please just paste the contents of the DDS.txt log in your next post. DO NOT attach the log.===

Third party programs if not up to date can be the cause of infiltration an infection.
===

Please run this security check for my review.

Download Security Check by screen317 from here.Save it to your Desktop.Double click SecurityCheck.exe and follow the onscreen instructions inside of the black box.A Notepad document should open automatically called checkup.txt; please post the contents of that document.
===

Search and delete the AdWare, PUP (Potentially Unwanted Program) installed on your computer.

Please download AdwCleanerby Xplode onto your Desktop.
Close all open programs and internet browsers.Double click on AdwCleaner.exe to run the tool.Click on Delete tab follow the prompts.A log file will automatically open after the scan has finished. Please post the content of that log file with your next answer. You can find the log file at C:\AdwCleaner[Rn].txt (n is a number).

Please post the logs and let me know what problem persists.

Hello I have problems and I'm running Vista home basic bit with GB of RAM Problem - Somehow someway I have process running at start up I've already changed my start up programs and gone through the processes and ended some but I can only get it down to by ending processes I know screen shots attached I think this is why my games are running so slowly and freezing up Problem - After a restart while I was trying to fix my first problem my desktop picture wouldn't show up I tried right clicking on the pic to set as desktop background I tried going into personalization and choosing the background show. #2- #1- 73 won't desktop Processes, pic I've gone into regedit and checked the registry best I could I made a notepad file with a code I found online see below and imported it into regedit All to avail Thanks in advance Reg codeWindows Registry Editor Version HKEY LOCAL MACHINE Software Microsoft Windows CurrentVersion Policies ActiveDesktop quot NoChangingWallPaper quot dword HKEY CURRENT USER Software Microsoft Windows CurrentVersion Policies ActiveDesktop quot NoChangingWallPaper quot dword HKEY CURRENT USER Software Microsoft Windows CurrentVersion Policies Explorer quot NoActiveDesktopChanges quot dword HKEY CURRENT USER Software Microsoft Windows CurrentVersion Policies System #1- 73 Processes, #2- desktop background won't show. quot NoDispBackgroundPage quot dword quot Wallpaper quot -

Vista will eat your RAM. In most cases, 2 gB is the minimum to get acceptable performance (although with a lot of work you'll be able to get Vista Home Basic to work with 1 gB).

Looking at your processes - you've got an awful lot of memory being consumed by McAfee products in several entries. I'd suggest dumping the McAfee for something that's a bit more considerate of your RAM.

Also, your Indexing service is taking a lot of memory, I'd suggest shutting that off. The same goes for the Epson service.

Firefox and MSPaint take their chunk also - exiting them when you're done will help to conserve the RAM

The svchost.exe process that's using 41,480 K is a concern, right click on it and select "Go to Service(s)". Once there, scroll up and down to see which services are highlighted and let us know what you find.

As for the second issue, have you made any changes to the system? Have you scanned for malware?

Hello,

I am having trouble getting rid of these multiple (precisely 3) internet explorer processes that startup in the background periodically. Only one of the 3 processes is actually taking up all the CPU. In the application view on task manager I can see the internet explorer program, even when I do not have it open. I can also see the application at random websites (changing between them).

I have a whole bunch of icons on the right side of my taskbar that i have no idea what they are for....I checked on the "processes" with cntrl, alt, del....there is a HUGE list. As far as I can remember, I don't think that's a good thing. Some of them I have no idea what they are! I don't know what to end and what not...or how to stop them from running again at startup.

Help please? I don't even know how to make a list of them without typing them all up....

I'm a Streamer and have recently upgraded my pc i5 4690k, Asus z97-p, 16 ram. Ever since out of the blue cpu will spike from 60%-90% due to processes System & Compressed memory, Service Host:Local Service (No Network)(5), System Interrupts, Service Host: Local Service (7) and Client Server Runtime Process.
I have been unable to determine the cause even with exhaustive online research and frankly I'm at my wit's end. Numerous wipes and reinstalls of win 10 even by a local shop have not solved the problem. Even the hard drive has been replaced. I gave managed to create a CPU usage dump file for Windows Performance Recorder but I do not have the skill to diagnose. Please can anyone help!!

Hello!

I've been having this problem with my pc for a while now, and whenever I try to start a game, it doesn't show up at all (not even a black screen). I then can go to the task manager and see the game in the Background Processes tab.

All of my games are on Steam, so I'm not sure if it's every game or just Steam games in general. My graphics card driver is up to date.

A:iexplorer.exe processes always running in background

PROBLEM SOLVED!!!

Hope this helps others too, spread the word!

1- Simply make sure you have your Vista or Win7 CD, or if not download the recovery CD from <a href="http://neosmart.net/blog/2008/windows-vista-recovery-disc-download/" target="_blank" rel="nofollow">here</a>.
2- Run the CD and choose 'Repair your computer'.
3- Choose 'Command Prompt' from the list of options.
4- Change directory to your system partition/drive, probably Drive C. Just type in <u>cd c:</u> and press ENTER.
5- At the c: prompt just type in: <u>bootrec /fixmbr</u> and press ENTER.

This will overwrite your contaminated MBR which essentially is the problem here. When you reboot none of the smss.exe and iexplorer.exe will be running any more.
The reason why this works is because as opposed to trying to heal the file, like all the malware tools I used were, we are replacing it.

This worked for me. After a whole week of headaches (and I'm used to killing these things for a living), the solution was quite simple in the end. I hope it will be just as easy for you too.

Good luck!

Whenever I open Chrome or edge and start using it for a minute or so, the usage on my computer spikes up to 100 or high 90s. I looked at the background processes, and there were 3 or 4 "Google Chrome (32-bit)" or 3 or 4 "Microsoft Edge" running. If I close them out, they just keep coming back. I only have one window open at time.

I have a full scan of Windows defender going now.

So is this normal, or is something up?

edit: nothing on the defender scan

A:Duplicate processes running in the background

Hi kurtgillis12 Google Chrome and Microsoft Edge are multi-process web browsers. Which means that every tab, plugin, extension, etc. have their own instance (process). This is used mainly for sandboxing and enhanced security, so there's nothing wrong with that.It would help if we could know what hardware you are running. Follow the instructions below please.Speccy - Publish a snapshotFollow the instructions below to download and install Speccy, then to publish a snapshot of your system information:Download and install Speccy from Piriform (the download will start automatically a few seconds after clicking on the Speccy link);Note: You can opt-out the Google Toolbar installation if you want;Once Speccy is installed, launch the program and give it a good minute to load all your system information;After that, click on the File menu in the top left corner, and select Publish Snapshot;A window will appear asking you to confirm your decision to publish a snapshot. Click on Yes;A new window will appear after, with a URL link to your snapshot. Click on Copy to Clipboard button to copy that URL to your clipboard, then paste it in your next reply and post it;

A:Disabling unnecessary background processes.

This is always a tricky subject to ask advice on as people's systems and needs vary so disabling services for one person may have an adverse effect on another person's pc. It all depends on your system setup and what software you have installed.

From your list, I have the following disabled:
Application Layer Gateway Service.
Application Management.
ASP.NET State Service.
Background Intelligent Transur Service. - this is needed by Automatic Updates so I enable it when I visit MS Updates site every month.
DHCP Client. - my router is my DHCP client.
Error Reporting Service.
HID Input Service.
HTTP SSL.
IMAPI CD-Burning COM Service. - I use Nero
Indexing Service.
IPSEC Services.
IPv6 Helper Service.
MS Software Shadow Copy Provider.
Network DDE. - I'm not on a network
Network DDE DSDM. - as above
Network Provisioning Service. - as above
Portable Media Serial Number Service.
System Restore Service. - I use Acronis True Image
Uninterruptable Power Supply.
Universal PnP Device Host. (same question as PnP above).
Volume Shadow Copy.
Web Client.
Windows Firewall/Internet Connection Sharing. - my router has a firewall plus I use Sygate too.
Windows Time.
Wireless Zero configuration. - I'm not wireless

I have the following set to manual:
COM+ Event System.
COM+ System Application.
Faster User Switching Compatibility.
Help & Support.
InstallDriver Table Manager.
Logical Disc Manager Administrator Service.
Network Connections.
Network Location Awareness.
Remote Access Auto Connection Manager.
Remote Access Connection Manager.
Remote Procedure Call Locator.
Terminal Services.
Windows Installer.
WMI Performance Addaptor.

The following are set to Automatic:
Cryptographic Services.
DCOM Server Process Launcher.
Event Log
Logical Disc Manager.
Plug & Play
Print Spooler.
Protected Storage.
Remote Procedure Call.
Secondary Logon.
Security Accounts Manager.
Shell Hardware Detection.
Task Scheduler.
Themes.
Windows Image Acquisition.
Windows Management Instrumentation.
Workstation.

The rest are not on my list.

As I said earlier, it all depends on your setup but the ones I have set to automatic and manual are worth noting, as for the rest it may be a case of trial and error though you may have one or two little problems along the way :)

Hi

I keep getting the blue screen of death, I've got some RAM on order (and I have cleaned out the box and dedusted the heatsink on the cpu) but while I'm waiting for it I want to clean out the background processes. How do I do that? How do I know what is junk and what isn't?

There are about 70-80 things going on in the background even before I activate any programs. The bulk of it is SYSTEM and HP-Administrator.

Windows XP MCE SP2

So, here's my problem, I been to 2-3 other tech support sites to address this issue. Even though the advice was good, it did not solve the problem. It has gotten quite a bit worse since then. I could really use some advice and help, it's driving me nuts. Let me know what I need to run/download, etc to help out the process of diagnosis.

A few minor details
XP 64-bit ver.
All Major windows updates installed to date.
Firefox hangs as well.

Thanks.

Sometimes when I'm using my PC a massive load say Background processes task and tasks other bar. in or so of tasks suddenly pop up in the task bar including tabs that shouldn't even be tabs and this causes issues like windows on screen that don't respond to clicking or attempting to close them These tasks are usually background processes running on the computer for example Nvidia drivers or Corsair keyboard mouse drivers This problem also disables typing and clicking in other tabs and stops me from opening up the start menu although Ctrl Alt Del still responds correctly Finally if I manage to close most tabs one of the only tabs left will be an Adaware warning window with the dialogue quot Blocked threats quot which it won't list and quot iexplorer exe is attempting to access Background processes and other tasks in task bar. the internet quot even though I have disabled Internet Explorer on this PC I am running Windows with virtually all updates hardware should all be fine as it's relatively new If anyone has any idea what might cause this help would be appreciated I have run both AdAware full scan and Malware Bites antimalware full scan and no malicious content found

OK I m on my work s network here and as problem XP processes remaining - background in many people know companies like to spend as little as possible on their machines hence I m on a mhz machine with a mere mb RAM running XP Pro Anyway as you can guess to even keep running our machines need to be using as little memory as possible and one of the problems I ve come across is with Internet Explorer V Basically I ve noticed pages crashing or failing to load but in addition to that after closing pages I ve noticed a tendency for the processes to keep running in the background and continue to keep using memory up to mb PS XP problem - processes remaining in background is that right for one web page to use that seems a lot Anyway I was wondering if anyone else has had the problem of processes continuing to run in the background when the application has been closed IE is the only obvious one I have spotted so far but I have no idea if this can be related to system processes or other things I m basically looking for a way to find the cause and prevent this happening thus saving me bags of memory and hopefully preventing crashes as well nbsp

A:XP problem - processes remaining in background

Yes it is common that some web pages use a lot of resources and they don't close down immediately. The reason is Active-X and Java, which are downloaded programs into your browser and executed.

I suggest you get more memory or try FireFox, which uses less resources.

First off, I am aware that to disable startup processes all I have to do is go into Msconfig and disable them that way, but...

I have certain processes listed in the Task Manager 'Processes' area that are not available to disable via Msconfig.

These are processes such as ati2evxx, wdfmgr & wrsssdk.

These are just resource laggers and I have to keep going into the processes tab and disabling them that way every time I start up my PC.

The only way of disabling them completely that I can think of is to delete them completely, but I don't want to just INCASE I need them some time.

Is there any way I can stop these certain processes from running every time the PC boots up via another way than Msconfig?

HK

A:How Can I Disable Certain Unnecessary Startup Processes?

ati2evxx.exe is a process installed alongside ATI Display Adapters and provides additional configuration options for these devices. To prevent it from loading at start-up, go to Start > Run > type services.msc > press OK. Scroll down and find the service called: ATI HotKey Poller and double-click on it. Then click on properties and under the General Tab, change the Startup Type to Disabled. Now hit Apply and then OK and close any open windows.

wdfmgr.exe is part of Microsoft Windows Media Player 10 and above. This process decreases compatibility problems whilst the product is in use. If you have WMP10 installed and you want to keep it, then leave this one alone ( Introduction to the Windows Driver Foundation).

wrsssdk.exe is a process belonging to Webroot's Spysweeper which protects your computer from Internet-bound threats such as Trojans and spyware. This program is important for the stable and secure running of your computer and should not be terminated. However, if you wish so, go to Start > Run > type services.msc > press OK. Scroll down and find the service called: Webroot Spy Sweeper Engine and double-click on it. Then click on properties and under the General Tab, change the Startup Type to Disabled. Now hit Apply and then OK and close any open windows.

Hi all, I will be building my new PC shortly with an SSD as main OS drive and Win7 Ultimate 64bit OS. I'd like to minimize as much as possible all non essential background processes that write to disk. So I was thinking:

1) Disable all event logs that write txt files to disk (if possible, how is this done?)
2) Disable unnecessary services (which ones?)
3) Disable unnecessary scheduled events (disk defrag, etc)
4) Disable windows page file (I will be installing 32Gb RAM so maybe page file is not needed? And if so, how is this done?)
5) Disable System restore

Thanks for your feedback and suggestions.

A:How to minimize Win7 background write processes?

First off

1) Disable all event logs that write txt files to disk (if possible, how is this done?)
Disable the "Windows Event Log" and "Windows Error Reporting Service" .... be warned... once disabled no more logs to find what screwed up !!
2) Disable unnecessary services (which ones?)
Try this from Black Viper.. If you like risk go for barebone... otherwise safe..
3) Disable unnecessary scheduled events (disk defrag, etc)
Well suit yourself... but do defrag your other HDD (SSD's dont need them)
4) Disable windows page file (I will be installing 32Gb RAM so maybe page file is not needed? And if so, how is this done?)
Again.... Disabling pagefile... you wont be having any dumps to analyse.. if you BSOD..
Click Start > on the search bar type "View Advanced System Settings" and hit enter..
Under performance > Settings> Advanced > Change > Select the drive and select "no paging file" and then click set...
5) Disable System restore
Again at your own risk..... you wont have any point to go back to if you screwup

Other than that Enjoy... and let us know how it goes !!

Hello there!

I recently had an occasion to go to the DOS, well the "command prompt" as it is called now, and executed a command, which I think was called Tasklist. It listed an enormous list of processes that were running on my computer. Things like the Adobe updater, Apple phone support, etc. And I don't even have an iPhone (yet)! How can I identify these to figure out which is what and then turn off the ones I do not want, and most importantly, how do I make sure they don't come back?

Thanks A LOT!!!

A:How to identify, stop and prevent background processes?

Well you could go through your services.msc program and choose to disable the processes you don't use. However, this can be very dangerous if you don't know exactly what you're doing. I suggest that you go through your startup programs and close those that you don't use on a regular basis.

Start > Search "msconfig" > Programs > Deselect those you don't wish to use at startup.

Hi I'll try to be short since it's strange and hard to explain Had windows upgraded to Windows everything normal After a few months one program I use for a long time started giving me problems - plays tv It''s a client app that allows recording of in-game footage for gamers The problem I started experiencing was that whenever I clicked the shortcut or the exe of plays tv instead of opening the program window nothing would happend Upon clicking again after a while I the the in program Clicking processes. a background on starts exe would get the usual quot The program is already running quot So checking the task manager I could see there was indeed a process open for it But nothing I could do would make it show up there's not even an icon in the Clicking on a exe starts the program in the background processes. task bar So only Clicking on a exe starts the program in the background processes. solution would be to end the process in the task manager and restart again Usually at the second attempt it starts normally Not always Now this problem started hapening rarely to occasionally to frequently to always And soon it was affecting also another program also related to video recording - OBS Studio They didn't start at the same time Clicking on a exe starts the program in the background processes. OBS just started more recently Contacted support for plays tv they never seen anything like it Now the most recent windows update changed the display a bit for the the task manager So now when that happends I can clearly see that the processes are indeed running in the task manager but not in the apps tab where they were supposed to be the process will be in the background processes instead The pic I sent shows the program open and in the task manager everything working normally where it should be The problem I have makes the program plays tv not open and in the task manager the process instead of being on top in the quot Aplica es quot Apps tab as the pic shows would be in the lower section quot Processos em Segundo Plano quot Background Processes and completely unresponsive and dead in the water Any ideas Thanks in advance

Hi to start off I ve had this problem for the past couple of weeks A few programs that I ve been running have suddenly started to not open past the initial start up phase I ll open processes past Programs not background go and look at it in the task manager and it will say that its open but won t do anything and idle around until I either close it or it closes itself An example would be the battle net client http i imgur com kBpFpV png The program will attempt to keep updating itself but Programs not open past background processes is unable to do Programs not open past background processes so I ve checked my firewall and antivirus and bot Programs not open past background processes are working fine and not blocking it in any way This only happens for certain programs like League of legends battle net and others like Utorrent None of these programs work and get stuck in background processes This problem has stumped me and I need any information on why this may be happening nbsp

A:Programs not open past background processes

Hi and welcome to TSG.

You need to give us some information on your system in general in order for anyone to make any kind of informed response.

What is the make and model of the machine, assuming its a 'big brand' prebuilt machine like a HP, Dell, Acer etc?
Have you ever changed or upgraded any hardware at all?
If it is a self / custom build, what is the make and model of the motherboard, cpu, ram, gpu, power supply (including wattage) etc?
What operating system are you using (Win XP, Vista, 7, 8 etc) and is it 32 or 64 bit?
Are all you programs and drivers fully patched and up to date? Don't rely on Windows to do it for any third party hardware (GPU, Audio etc).
What Firewall and Antivirus are you using?
Do you use any other malware programs or cleanup utilities? (malwarebytes, Super Anti Spyware, CCleaner etc)?

The more info the better

On a fresh boot, after my desktop loads but before I launch any browsing/email/internet applications, I notice I have two or three instances of iexplore.exe running in the list of active processes. Does this seem "normal" for Windows 7, or should I be concerned that iexplore.exe is running even when I have not launched IE?

(Win7 x64). Browser is IE8, but Firefox & Chrome are also installed.

A:Is it safe to delete background running processes?

From way back in 2001, Dark Star put up a thread which said on a home PC with Windows XP, you can disable the following running processes without problem:

Alerter
Clipbook
Computer Browser
Fast User Switching
Human Interface Access Devices
Indexing Service (Slows the hard drive down)
Messenger
Net Logon (unnecessary unless networked on a Domain)
Netmeeting Remote Desktop Sharing (disabled for extra security)
Remote Desktop Help Session Manager (disabled for extra security)
Remote Procedure Call Locator
Remote Registry (disabled for extra security)
Routing & Remote Access (disabled for extra security)
Server
SSDP Discovery Service (this is for the utterly pointless "Universal P'n'P", & leaves TCP Port 5000 wide open)
TCP/IP NetBIOS Helper
Telnet (disabled for extra security)
Universal Plug and Play Device Host
Upload Manager
Windows Time
Wireless Zero Configuration (for wireless networks)
Workstation

Hoping someone can assist with an Edge issue on a Toshiba laptop running Windows Home.

Edge has all of a sudden stopped launching. Following the direction on another thread on this amazing site, went into Task Manager and ended task on Edge. That worked .... once....

Now, Edge will open just the first time, but opens up 15-20 Edge background processes. If you try to close normally using upper right-hand corner, Edge won't close. You have to got into Task Manager each time. And when you do, again, it opens 15-20 Edge background processes

If this was another browser, I'd probably just install and reinstall, but that's not an option with Edge.

Any suggestions?

I am running Adobe Flash Professional CC on a Toshiba AMD laptop running Win 7 Home Premium 64-bit.

None of the dialog windows in Flash CC function properly; the window opens but the buttons don't work. Some dialog windows cause the application to lock and I have to close it via Task Manager.
I wonder if another process is conflicting with Flash Pro CC.

I've attached a screenshot of all the processes that are running. I've checked each process on the excellent site:
Windows startup programs - Database search and I don't see an obvious culprit.

Does anyone see a process that I should get rid of? Or do you have any other suggestions?
The computer has recently been scanned by CC Cleaner, MalwareBytes, Avast Free Anti-virus and SpyBot.

A:Are background processes causing my application to lock?

Your screen print shows you have 62 processes running but there are not 62 processes in the list.
You need to click Show processes from all users to see all the processes running.

Hello I have been worried about having a compromised system for quite some time now - particulary after reading scary stories about botnets and what not I am using Windows Ultimate with Malwarebytes Premium and Avira Free as anti-malware protection As for the firewall it's only been the native Windows Firewall operated via an tiny extension called Windows processes system compromised? possible - background infection Firewall Control with medium security settings but I'm not confident enough to use this and will probably try out Comodo once my issue has hopefully been system compromised? possible infection - background processes resolved My current problem started yesterday I woke up and checked my email everything was working fine no anti-virus alerts nothing After grabbing a coffee I noticed that my connection was down My pc wouldn't recognize my router connected through a LAN cable Windows troubleshooting didn't fix it Also the router and connection were working just fine because I could connect to it with my mobile deviced I strongly believe that it is some virus that now causes my system to malfunction I'm using a Broadcom NetXtreme network adapter to connect my pc to the Internet via cable After checking the Device Manager I noticed that the adapter has somehow disabled itself and checking the settings said that no drivers could be found I looked at the driver path and everything was normal I checked the driver path manually it's a native Win driver found under C Windows System drivers b nd a sys and nothing appears to have been modified within the file itself I run a MB malware search - nothing turned up TDSSKiller - nothing I tried to run Avira first their Rootkit active malware search but it would freeze while trying to access hidden objects A normal full scan also wouldn't start - it would be stuck at the boot sector search not having browsed any files at all It wouldn't let me cancel it - it would freeze until I relogged Also the computer wouldn't stop searching for the network even after I turned off the router modem disconnected the cable I couldn't disconnect the LAN connection through the connection settings window - Explorer would freeze too then crash and restart I tried to restart the Broadcom driver in Device Manager but it would also freeze I tried to disable the automatic Network Discovery - no changes to the Advanced network settings wouldn't aply and it kept on looking for an adapter I backed up some files and decided to just restart the pc Unfortunately I did not boot into safe mode However everything seemed to be normal The fixes I tried earlier have been applied - the Broadcom driver was recognized accepted again and the device was ready to use The network device search stopped and it just said that there's no connection The Turn off network discovery setting was applied too Furthermore Avira would now do scans - and find absolutely nothing Same with TDSSKiller and Malwarebytes The system was extremly laggy during the almost -hour-long Avira full scan though Also in Task Manager the CPU-usage displayed would differ from the apparent CPU use by the processes that were running it was as if there was some unknown background process running invisably that hogged additional CPU power during the scan It occured during the Avira scan and during other operations It's as if the Task Manager doesn't display the memory used by processes correctly I would like to add that I have not connected my pc to the web after the driver problem occured - and while I was using my anti-malware software I was afraid that whatever was on my pc would wreck havoc on my computer once I reconnected I decided to restore my connection because I'm out of ideas as to how to find the culprit and remove whatever it is that has attached itself to my system I do hope you can guide me through a proper recovery procedure Thank you very much in advance for any assistance

I simply cannot get rid of this virus.  I've run multple scans with various engines (e.g. Windows Malicious Tool, Malwarebytes, Norton, etc.) and cannot kill this process or get rid of it. There are about 15 processes running in the background with the description COM SURROGATE.  They take up so much memory and CPU, and redirect all of my web traffic.  My computer is basically useless at this point.  I've viewed other posts regarding this issue, but each removal process seems to differ a little here and there.  Please help!

A:[SOLVED] Internet applications problem - background processes?

Hi,

I'm not much of a PC gamer, nor am I familiar with Steam... but here's my two cents.

Assuming you do not need Steam to execute either of the games, assure that Steam or any game is in your start up processes [start > run > msconfig.exe > startup tab].
Restart the system. Click on the game's launcher or type in "game".exe and see if it loads.

Also, did you try to disable any process of a game that wasn't working and then try to restart the game process once again?

i have around 70 processes that begin at start up. i only use the laptop for web browsing/streaming video/dvds. which ones can i safely disable at start up? also, streaming video like youtube will not load or buffers even though im in a covered area with verizon wireless broadband! HELP!

A:what processes can i disable at start up? youtube streaming problems

Media players, office programs, all Adobe stuff, update checkers -- almost everything except your required security programs.

Why not just try a "clean boot" as a test >>

Run msconfig and select the "Services" tab. Check "Hide Microsoft Services" and then disable the rest. Also uncheck "load startup items" on the general page.
Now restart and test the issue at hand

If no problems, run msconfig and recheck half the disabled items on the Services tab. Test again. If the problem recurs, UNcheck half the items you just checked to narrow down the culprit.

If the problem didn't occur, check the other half, so all the Services are enabled -- proceed to do this on the startup tab as well.

Get the idea? You want to isolate the problem to a specific startup if possible.

Note: if you already have items unchecked under msconfig > startups and are in &#8220;selective&#8221; startup mode &#8211; you should note what these are before beginning. They will need to be de-selected again.

A:How to remove useless windows background services and processes that show the pc?

If they are running, it's for a reason, if you want a full cleanup uninstall anything you don't actually use.
