Windows 8.1 Error - cannot remove keyboard layout

Q: Windows 8.1 Error - cannot remove keyboard layout

Hi there
If you select a keyboard layout and there's no language pack available you cannot remove that keyboard again.

I made a mistake and got this (Igbo whatever that is)

Now I've got a redundant keyboard entry that I can't get rid of.

(Running Windows 8.1 Enterprise RTM - TechNet x-64). Note you can only add language packs etc for PRO and above versions.

Cheers

Preferred Solution: Windows 8.1 Error - cannot remove keyboard layout

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/directdownload.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

From what I read about this problem it's a definite bug carried over from the last version and apparently isn't fixed yet although there are some registry adjustments that seem to be working for people with this problem.

The link below shows that many users have the same problem which can be resolved with an adjustment to the registry or the charms bar.

I have windows XP home edition and there is something wrong with my computer so i just want to reinstall windows. Now i put the cd in the drive and it begins to reinstall windows then windows needs to restart in order for it to proceed with the reinstallation. When it is restarting it brings up an error message after it has restarted and is continouing with the setup it says "setup cannot load the keyboard layout file kbdus.dll" and it tells me that i have to restart and i cant do anything else. All i want to do is reinstall windows (deleting my whole hard drive) so that it might get rid of whatever is making my computer act really messed up.

Ok, so I'm running XP SP2 and since I've started learning Korean I decided to install the keyboard layouts so that I can type using the correct Korean characters. So I follow the directions... go to Regional Settings, then to Languages tab, then to Text Services and Input Languages... click on Details... then click ADD on the right of a window displaying my current setup for English(American). Then I select Korean, and then "Korean Input System (MS-IME2002)". I click OK and then APPLY.

At which point Windows gives me the following Error:

"Windows could not properly load the Korean - Korean Input System (MS-IME2002) keyboard layout"

I tried a number of other keyboard layouts - including the English(Dvorak), and United States International layouts and get the same error. Anyone have any idea what's going on? ...Or know of a way I can uninstall the language support and reinstall it?

Thanks!

Windows seems to overwrite personal layout controls configuration with defaults on some occasions. Hence, the way to have a "permanent" solution basically appears to be rewriting your HKEY_USERS\.DEFAULT\Control
Panel\Input Method\Hot Keys with what you have in your HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Control
Panel\Input Method\Hot Keys once you've configured your layout-switch shortcuts correctly.

Hello,

I have the win8 upgrade (previous OS was win7 ultimate).

The OS goes very well, so far, just a minor problem...

From time to time I noticed there is installed a US keyboard, I am UK based and any setup keyboard/date etc are in UK format. Also when I installed the windows I selected (autodetected) the UK settings.

Well, this is very strange...

Also, I noticed that the US keyboard does not exist on the layouts (I am using Greek and UK), so in order to get rid of this, I have to add and the remove the US keyboard, but after a while re-appears!

thanx in advance for any ideas/help...

chris

A:Keyboard layout!

Did you reinstall the keyboard driver from keyboard vendor? In windows it will install the generic driver just so the device will function but to use the keyboards full functionality you have to install the keyboard driver. With the auto detect enabled windows will sometimes install the incorrect drivers.

Hello, i've been using windows 8.1 for a little time in my new Sony notebook. First, i used windows 8 and had no problems, my keyboard layout was the correct one (Spanish - Latin Am?rica, 'cause i'm from argentina). But after an upgrade to windows 8.1, the default layout was set to Traditional Spanish wich does not suit the layout I see on my keyboard, signs are misplaced. I went to the control panel and under the idioms settings i set Latin American layout to my keyboard, but even with the correct configuration (checked with the layout image that is shown in the configuration menu), signs like ? and @ are still misplaced. What can I do? It really piss me when i try to write something and realise that it's not where it should be. Thanks in advance, and sorry for my bad English.

Thank you!

Hi,

I did change the setting at "Regional and Language" to recognize Japanese keyboards. But it is as if my XP only has the standard keyboard in it and no other.

Do I have to reinstall the XP again?
Is there a other way to make my PC recognize a Japanese Keyboard?

Thank You

The left shift is much larger and the first key from the left shift is 'z' and the '\' has been moved near the right shift. So, this means all the keys in the UK layout on the bottom row have moved one space to the right. I can't find the corresponding layout. I am running Win7 on a Vostro 1520.

Here's a picture of the Keyboard.

Thanks for all help in advance!

I just rebooted my desktop with windows xp from 2000 and now the keyboard layout is wrong. the " and @ are the wrong way around (i have a UK keyboard) and i can't find anything online to fix it! i downloaded intellitype but it did nothing at all to anything ever im sure! what do i need to download to correct the layout to UK settings on my computer?

A:Keyboard layout issue

If that is the MS intellitype software, uninstall it and then reinstall to choose uk instead
of any other country. Try a fresh download when doing this. The first download may be
incomplete to some degree causing this.

Hello:

I use US Dvorak as my primary keyboard, but I type most of my passwords in standard US QWERTY layout. In Vista, I can change the icon for the different keyboard layouts so at a glance I can tell if I am in the correct keyboard layout when I'm in, for example, a password field where I can't see what I type. Is there any way to do this in XP? Does anyone know of any programs that would accomplish the same thing?

Thanks,
Nick

Hello. I am setting up my new PC right now and I have been given the option to choose a 'keyboard layout'

I speak English, I'm American, and I'm right-handed.

I don't know the differences between the layouts. Which of these I should choose:United States-Dvorak
United States-Dvorak for right hand
United States-International
US
Thank you!

A:Which keyboard layout should I choose?

You need to choose the layout that matches the physical layout of your keyboard, otherwise you might find things confusing. For instance, the shifted 2 character on US keyboards is @, whereas for the UK it is ".

Hi all, I'm having a major stress. I don't know why it's happened but my keyboard has gone from UK layout to US (the @ and " positions have swapped as have |#|).

I've spent ages looking for help on this forum and others, googled the h*** out of the sucka, but I can't work out how to get it back. My main problem can be seen from the screenshot below (I hope).

As you can see, for some reason I have no default keyboard layouts. What can I do to get them back, reinstall them or what ever so my layout is restored to UK. I'd rather not have to install a 3rd party app, and I'm comfortable with writing something to the registry if need be.

I've also noticed during this that I can't see the language bar, and can't restore it.

I'm running windows 7 home prem, with sp1 (aparently all the latest updates).

Appreciate your help

valveless, welcome to sevenforums.com!

You just need to click on the Add button on that window and select
English (United Kingdom) - Keyboard - United Kingdom

Language bar is not available yet, because you do not have any input languages installed. Use the method I described to add languages, and after that language bar can be available.

Hi,

I didn't touch any keyboard settings so I have absolutely no lead as to how to fix this.

I bought a E460 with a Japanese keyboard but being English I wanted to use the Thinkpad primarily with English language. I installed Japanese language as my secondary layout to switch to. However when Windows loads, it either does not show that I have multiple layouts installed, or defaults to a standard English language keyboard layout, thus rendering my keyboard nigh on useless. Is it possible to configure the keyboard to output different characters? Like pressing '1', and getting an 'n' with a tilda or something, not just the standard American keyboard characters. I've come up with a couple custom characters in the EUDC editor that I would like to link to the keyboard.

A:Solved: Custom Keyboard Layout

It is possible. You'll have download another language to be used by the language bar. This would be the easy way out. I think a tilda is easy enough to put on a letter, at least with Finnish keyboards (alt gr+ (the key between enter(return) and ) and then just write the letter on whom you want to put the tilda on) also these are easy to put on the letters. Also I have letters straight on the keyboard. If you want a real shortcut, you'll have to do something trickier, but I can't remember how to map your keys.

The drop down menu on the On-Screen-Keyboard is something i have been able to do before I'm just not sure how i did it.

I am using UMPC and desktop PC with touchscreens so the onscreen keyboard is something i use quite often, I speak English and Swedish but am slowly learning the Polish language here where I live now and thus need a practical access to their alphabet special characters on my Swedish QWERTY keyboards, this is an excellent use of the virtual keyboard but I have previously added the supported installed languages to the drop down menu of the keyboard which is more practical than changing in the system tray or using the keyboard short-cut combination I've assigned as a make-shift solution.

Hello from Japan
A while ago someone directed me to the "Keyboard Layout Creator 1.4" in order to slightly modify the keyboard(s) I use.
I installed that software on two desktops running Win XP, where it ran fine (except that it gives me an error message, that "XP may be too old to function properly".

The other day I bought a new notebook (Dell Vostro 3500, running Win 7).
Although this is supposed to work better than XP, I could not manage to have the Creator display **ANY** keyboard layout - not even one I copied from my other machines.
I tried:
* reinstallation
* modify "compatibility"
* change font

but NOTHING I have tried to far makes the Creator display any keyboard layout.
Is there a specific trick to do this???

If there is, I would greatly appreciate any help.
Thank you

Hey guys, I've had this problem for a long time now and even though I got a bit used to it, it's still very, very annoying... I couldn't find anything similar on Google, forums, etc, so I really hope someone here can help me.
I'm using the US International keyboard layout, but it doubles all things which you use to type accents, like an apostrophe, or ". This means that when I type an apostrophe, then hit space, then type an e, I get: '?. This should be just 'a of course. Now I have to backspace everytime and type the a again, you can probably see why this would annoy me. Also, same thing: if I type ", then space, then for example an r, I get: ""r.
I absolutely have no clue what could cause this problem. Any help would be highly appreciated!

Hi,

I got a laptop from work, and it has a very funny keyboard layout. In addition to English and Hebrew letters, some letter keys have numbers on them ('U' has the number 4, 'I' - 5, 'O' - 6 etc). I cannot type any of those letters.... the number keys from 7 to 0 do not produce the characters '&','*','(' or ')' when pressed with Shift held down, but rather behave like function keys or arrow keys.

Any idea how to make this keyboard behave more sensibly?

Thanks,
D.

Hello TS!

I am wondering if any of you PC gamers could help out with some suggestions.

I have a Wolf Claw 2 gaming keyboard which i have used for over 2 years and its falling apart. I love the thing. However, b4 i simply go and get another, I'm wondering if i can refresh my layout with some other products.

I was thinking of getting the <Microsoft Sidewinder Mouse ($50 on amazon)> with a Compact Keyboard(preferably Back-lit) and an independent keypad, like the Belkin N52.

My main problem is, i am not a fan of regular square keyboards cuz they are very limiting to key bindings in fast pace gaming.

Now, the mouse I'm sure ill love, but if any of you out there can recommend some products I'd greatly appreciate it. My budget for all 3 pieces is about about $150

Wondered if anyone can help with this issue.

The comapny I work for has a requirement that the # symbol be at the end of all user login passwords. On one terminal however, when you get to the login screen, entering "password#" returns a password eror, while "password?" lets you in.

First thing I did was to check regional settings and keyboard layout were all set to UK, not US, then reset the password on the server to make sure the # symbol and not the ? symbol was being used.

After both of these I still need to add the ? symbol, however as soon as you login to windows, in any input screen the symbols are on the correct keys, it's only pre-login that they seem to have switched.

Hi all,

I'm using 3 keyboard layouts. I would like that when I open a specific app, it will automatically switch to the layout I defined.
It would be even better if I could define it per window.

So, if for example I'm opening a chat window with a specific contact in Skype, I would want it to change my layout to English automatically, while if I chat with other contact in Skype I would want it to change to another language. just because I always chat with one contact in English, while with the other in some other language.

Anyone heard about such a powerful tool?

Thanks.

Hi all, I want to order a Lenovo YOGA 510 14 - i5-8GB-256SSD on the Belgian Lenovo Shop. Part number 80S70042MB. However, the specs page does not specify the keyboard layout (at all) of the above model. I want to make sure it's the BE layout. I assume it will be, but want to be sure... Can anyone help me find out which keyboard layout i'm going to get when ordering? Thanks a lot,Andreas

When running just 'cmd' the 'dos-window' opens normally and the keyboard layout does not change but remains as choosen option (default azerty). With all previous versions, I used to open an old DOS application which still runned OK started by clicking on the dosname.exe application. With Win10 however, the executable still opens (as was hoped for) but the the keyboard is switched to QWERTY layout inside the application (which itself seems not have any option to modify keyboard). How can possibly a DOS application change the keyboard ? Did not change before using previous versions of Windows cmd window !

I have recently purchased a new blue flexible keyboard (US Layout with Kanji) anyway the left ctrl key (it only has one ctrl key) appears to have stopped working. It defintily worked until i changed the keyboard layout from uk to us in regional and language options. i'm pretty sure that isnt the issue though, because im on a completely different pc (with xp, uk layout) right now and the ctrl key still doesnt work.

Has anyone got any suggestions or ideas? a keyboard tester of some variety perhaps?

I have installed an english version of XP Pro on a Japanese laptop.

I don't seem to have the option to set the keyboard to japanese 106 keys.

The control panel>keyboard says in using a japanese keyboard 106 keys but its set up as a US keyboard. (eg the quotes and the @ postitions are swapped.)

I have no need to write in the japanese language i just want to change the keyboard layout or I'll have to put stickers on all my keys! Which isn't the leap forward in operating systems i was hoping for.

A:[solved]Keyboard layout issue

You need to install the files for the Asian Locales. Under Control Panel > Regional and Language Settings > Language tab there is a check box for Install the East Asian Languages. Check it (you will need the Windows XP CD) and restart if needed. Then go to Details on the same tab. Click Add. There, choose your preferred language and then check the Keyboard/IME and choose the keyboard layout you want. Then when you OK it, highlight US in the keyboard section and click remove. OK it and you should restart to make the change.

Hi,

I have 2 PC's:
Windows XP SP2 (Japanese version) with a Japanese Keyboard.
Windows XP SP2 (English version) with a Japanese Keyboard.

I use my Japanese version of Windows XP (interactively), while I am connected to
my other English version (through Remote Desktop).

The problem is that when I am connected to my English version (through Remote Desktop) PC, my keyboard is set to US.
Is it possible to use my Japanese keyboard layout when I am connected to my English version (through Remote Desktop). Is their any settings that I can use? Any registry setting to set?

Just wondering if it is possible.

Thanks in advance for any help or tips.

if somebody knows how to add it in the list, please tell me and i would be grateful!

iam crawling through microsoft support but one can never find anything in there...

I recently did a fresh XP install using a 'stripped down' version, which is great because it installs in about 10 mins and boots up in the blink of an eye (relatively speaking, of course) It has a lot of unnecessary serviced removed so the whole system is far more responsive.

The only problem I've had is that the British keyboard layout simply isn't there. And I want it!

How may one, if it's possible, add a keyboard layout.. I can't seem to find the way..

Thanks, now!

A:Missing British keyboard layout

I wonder if you could download the drivers for your keyboard (if they exist)
Or possibly download any british keyboard driver (like MS Wireless keyboard or something)

Also this version of Windows (Hmm)

Can you go to Start-->Run-->Services.msc

And then scroll down to "Remote Registry" and see if you can disable it (by double clicking on it and selecting disable from "Startup type")
If not, then I wouldn't use it.

Is it a legal copy?

Hello everyone...

I'm a new user of the Windows 7 operating system. So far I'm content with it, it's just that I have one problem unsolved. I've been trying for the past few weeks to remove the English US keyboard without any success. I have no problem adding any new keyboards/languages, but that specific keyboard just won't go away, and it's causing me trouble.

I've Googled it and found no answer. Is there any way I could do something about it? Anyone has any idea? Anything would be useful. Thanks for this community and thanks in advance for your help.

Sorry if that's the wrong part of the forum to post this question. I hope you'll still help me with this quick question.

I want to switch keyboard layouts between US and German. I already added the German layout and I can switch between the two. My problem is that I do not know how to get the small icon on the bottom right that displays which layout I'm currently using. So far all I can get is an icon showing a keyboard and I can get the language information when I click on it but it's not as convenient as just having the abbreviation of the language displayed. I couldn't find anything about this in the settings.

Please, help.
Thank you very much

I used Microsoft with Keyboard Microsoft Help Layout Creator Keyboard Layout Creator to install a modified Arabic keyboard on my Vista -bit system and I made a Help with Microsoft Keyboard Layout Creator quot newby quot mistake that somehow corrupted the layout that was installed I failed to create a user-defined name for the layout and also inadvertently specified the language as English-US As a result when setup ran it specified the language under English-US and when I activated it under Arabic Saudi Arabia it created a second layout file or at least a second listing under the same stupid name quot Layout Description quot Then the next time I tried to use MKLC the editing screen was blank no keyboard graphic and it lists quot Layout Description quot as the currently loaded source file And nothing I do will get rid of it If I try to load a different source file it acts as though the file has been loaded but the top margin still says quot Layout Description quot and the editing space is still white I tried changing the colors for the display but it's still blank I've even loaded a different source file and verified it and it will even create a new setup folder and setup indicates that it has installed the new layout but it's not visible on the list I've tried using the setup exe for quot Layout Description quot to repair the layout and when that didn't work I tried removing it but although the setup exe indicates success in both actions the bad layout remains on my computer under both Arabic Saudi Arabia and English-US I've tried uninstalling MKLC and re-installing it but still get the same behavior I tried uninstalling the keyboard layout using the Control Panel software removal tool and also tried creating a new user but the MKLC program still doesn't work correctly So is there some way I can manually fix or remove the corrupted quot Layout Description quot keyboard layout and also completely remove MKLC so that I can start over I'm afraid to tackle the registry but don't see any other options By the way MKLC creates three different installation instruction sets but setup exe insists on using the AMD msi files even though my processor is Intel I assume that's OK because the other two are for -bit and Itanium processors and the AMD instruction set is virtually identical to Intel's version I think the basic problem is that there are two layouts installed with the same name and I've got to manually clean things up I just don't know how Help

OK, let's just keep this simple. Is there a recipe for deleting a key layout/program/whatever that has been corrupted so that it doesn't show up in Add/Remove Software? Is there a way to do this sort of thing manually? Yes? No? Sort of?

XP and vista had keyboard layouts for arabic + digits, so you could use the hindi digits.

It seems in w7, you can only choose arabic 101 without digits, no matter which country you choose, so there's no way for me to type the hindi digits like
٠ ٩ ٨ ٧ ٦ ٥ ٤ ٣ ٢ ١

what to do??? Where is this layout so I can have arabic characters and hindi digits?

On my keyboard i have printed numbers over some keys (i took a picture of it)
Please help

A:Wierd laptop keyboard layout

Try pressing the num lk button in the upper right of the screen shot along with the same key that allows you to select the other keys that are shown in a box .

It appears that those numbers on the letters U,I,O,P,J,K,L,;,M represent a numbers key pad.

I have had CorelDraw 12 installed for a long time without any problems.

The PC keyboard layout is in English (UK) settings.

However when I type a sign in Corel now, I get a # displayed instead.

Other keys have changed position as well.

I have no problems in any other applications, Word, Excell. The sign will always appear.

How do I alter the settings on Corel Draw to correct this??

Thanks

I don't have your keyboard but it should be about the same. Start and type in search keyboard. Their might be a option to set up your keyboard accessory buttons. If that doesn't work I have no idea.
