Guest account no admin rights

Q: Guest account no admin rights

Hi,
I bought a laptop withWindows 8.1 for my wife and thought I would set it up with a guestaccount and then change it a normal user account after it was up andrunning. Unfortunately, I had not realised just how restricted theuser accounts are compared with W7.
So, my problem is thatwith this guest account I cannot do anything to create a normal useror admin account. I have spent hours and hours on various forumsfollowing supposed fixes without luck. Every solution that I haveread requires that you have a more rights than a guest account to fixthe problem... so a real catch 22 me thinks. I have long converted toAndroid and is a brilliant compared to windows.
Is anyone aware of asolution that works bearing in mind that with a guest user account Icant really do anything that requires any sort of permission. Noteven a reset/refresh, basically locked out!
Thanks in advance

Preferred Solution: Guest account no admin rights

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/directdownload.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

This thread was about the August 14th "Patch Tuesday" patches causing this issue but I have since determined IE7 is the culprit. It is the most bizarre thing i have ever see in all my years of computing. Whatever IE7 did to the machine, even un-installing IE7 and reverting back to IE6, still keeps the system change that is causing this behavior to occur. It is certainly not the Group Policies as disabling them doesn't make a difference. What I need now is a tool that can show me a "before and after" of all changes that have occurred to figure out what's getting broken.

Hi

Ive stumbled across a problem that has been causing me grief for a few days now, every time I try to access my hard drive (C disk) it says, access is denied. Also, i cant edit permissions because I've lost admin rights. Ive tried many things including unlocking the system admin, this lets me access a few extra things like being able to use the sfc command in cmd, however, it doesn't allow me to access the C disk or change permission because it also has lost admin rights? I fear that this is a bad problem and I don't know how it happened. I have tried restoring to a previous date and that doesn't work either.

Any help and/or advice would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks, Shimin4tor

The firm in which I work has a Lenovo PC with Windows 10 installed. There are two user profiles on the computer, the admin and another normal account without administration rights. We have only the password of the account without administrator rights.

The network administrator had left the company surprisingly in without giving the administrator password of the PC and we cannot contact him anymore.

Now we want to install another programme and we cannot do this without an administrator account.

I disabled secure boot and have tried to boot the PC with an Linux USB Stick, but it do not boot from the stick.

Any suggestion how I either can reset the password of the administrator account or create an new account with administrator rights.

A:Windows 10 admin password reset or new account with admin rights

Although there may be techniques to recover a lost password it is forum policy that we do not discuss these here - your best bet would be to visit a local security specialist and get them to recover/reset it for you - and a change to the policy for the replacement admin may be a good idea, I always wrote a list of all passwords and stored it with the Managing Director and also in a fireproof safe

Hi all.
I moved into in a shared house with around 6 people. I let others use my laptop and i have setup guest accounts for them. As a kitchen and living room computer....

Now i see that people are using my pc to download torrents as crazy.
i tought that Guest account blocked this? aren t .exe installer automatically blocked?
Am i misinformed ?

Thanks in advance

A:Guest account Rights Download coming true

Misinformed. The guest account will block system wide changes to the system. Everything happens in the local account. Running an exe is not blocked otherwise nothing could be ran. An installer is just an executable, there is no distinction. Any bad voodoo that has plagued from guest account can be easily removed by deleting the guest profile.

Using Win 8.1

First off, the account I'am signed on with is listed as admin type account. It's the one I had to enter my windows account email.
Since installing the new MalwareBytes 2.0 program (which went in without any problem) it put an shortcut icon on desktop. I tried too move the icon from desktop to another folder and it said I needed admin rights to do this. Usually once I click on continue it gives me access and proceeds to carry out the command.
So I followed the tutorial to build hidden admin account. I type in: net user administrator /active:yes, it completed. I signed on to the admin account and tried the same operation and it still asked for admin rights.
What am I doing wrong?

UpDate: MalwareBytes 2.0 has a self protection ability that needs to not be enabled, otherwise everything associated with the Program including program icons located anywhere cannot be moved.

Recently I did a clean install from the windows installation tool off a CD I made. Soon after logging on and making my first account (again!) I couldn't open the C drive. I messed with the owner options and made my account the owner so I could open it. Possibly before or maybe after (I'm not sure) I realised I wasn't able to use any admin settings, (like add another account or see advanced system settings) open any applications that required admin rights (like CMD or any installation file) or do anything in the system menu. I've tried to look up the solution but can't find anything that fits the description of my problem. Any help is welcome. Thanks in advance for at least reading this.

Hey all first post here I noticed some very bizarre behavior with the most recent slew of MS patches from August th Prior to the August th updates Guest users of our lab computers could plug in after Admin 14th a patches. user mount Requires Guest August rights. USB can'n drive a USB drive have XP SP fully patched to July recognize it and it be accessible from Explorer or My Computer After the August updates were applied it now asks from a username and password of an account that has Admin rights This never did this before so I am wondering what the heck is going on Event Viewer shows nothing it s not a Group Policy setting as nothing has changed on the Local Policy I Guest user can'n mount a USB drive after August 14th patches. Requires Admin rights. even disabled it and rebooted plus gpudate force If I give Admin rights to the Guest account it does work but Guest user can'n mount a USB drive after August 14th patches. Requires Admin rights. that is obviously not an option as the machines I m dealing with run with guest rights Anyone got Guest user can'n mount a USB drive after August 14th patches. Requires Admin rights. any insight or clue as to what s going on or how to remedy this other than uninstalling the patches Thanks for any tips and help nbsp

A:Guest user can'n mount a USB drive after August 14th patches. Requires Admin rights.

Have you tried setting the Guest up as Power Users? For the USB drive are you talking about thumb drives or flash drives? I ended up changing the drive letter (after plugging the flash into the USB) to X (you could use whichever letter you don't currently use) because students and teachers were having problems accessing their thumb drives. This solved the problem for us.
Good luck!

Greetings,

I am trying to change the folder properties of a applications folder from read only. I am doing this per instructions from the apps provider to prevent crashes.

When I go to change the permissions it states I need admin privileges. The only account I have on the box is the admin however I did change the name to something besides admin. The account is definitely an admin account.

Any thoughts?

Hello all My gf decided she wanted her admin account name changed on her Windows machine from her first and last name I edited her account name so that only her first name showed No the guest account account showing admin Only available. up I used Netplwiz and everything seemed to go well Upon rebooting the machine somehow her guest account which was turned off and not showing was the only Only the guest account available. No admin account showing account accessible Before this she only had her admin account which was just her first last name and this was only the account accessible upon booting the machine Now she cannot access her usual account In the guest account I was able to browse to the Users folder in Windows Explorer and see that her usual account titled her first name is still there When trying to double click the folder I am prompted for a password but there is no box to type the password When looking at the properties of her C drive about GBs are showing as used so I am guessing all her data is still there Can someone please help a guy out V Day is this weekend and I would really like to survive it as she is already made at me for basically locking her out of her computer Thank you in advance

You'll have to activate the built-in administrator account, and use that account to reverse-engineer the accidental lockout. Regular eightforum techs will appear shortly and give you the needed info.

My friend and I share my laptop. Recently I found out that he was watching porn on my computer. So I promptly confronted him, and told him to stop. Weeks later, he did it again. So I downloaded Norton's Safety Minder to prevent it. So this sneaky prick goes around and enables the guest account, and lo and behold, porn fest again.

What can I do? I don't want to keep him off the admin account, because he plays games on here, but I don't want him watching porn on my laptop either. Is there a way to put parental settings on the guest account? I know you can disable it, tried that, he just re-enables it, then disables it before he gets off. I'm really frustrated about this.

A:Need To Disable Guest Account On Admin Account

You could provide more info about your machine, of course.

For starters, password protect the BIOS and give the child a user account.

There's no need for him to use an admintrator account.

Occasionally check to make sure your BIOS is still secure. Other than that, take the machine away and lock it up.

Which version of Windows 7?

I don't think the Guest account can have administrator rights, be an administrator. The actual Administrator account is hidden by default. You need at least one User set with administrative rights, shows as Administrator but others can be Standard users.

I have two computers on an in-home LAN, one running XP Pro, the other Win 7 Pro.
When I log into win7 from XP, I enter the Win7 "Administrator" name and password (none at this time). But the (Compute > Manage >...) "Session" shown on Win7 shows a Guest account being used. Why is this?

(The Administrator account on XP also has no password.)

Are the passwords for network login and local login the same?
If they are separate, how are the passwords and enable/disable controlled for each type?

Lastly, I would like to login from XP with the Admin name and password and actually use the win7 Admin account. What must be done to allow that to happen?

A:Admin login from XP gets Win7 Guest account?

Solution:
WARNING: Do not change the Administrator password if you used the OS to encrypt files or you will lose access to those files.

Select Start button, enter in search box "Local Security Policy", then select "Security Options", and then "Accounts: Limit local account use of blank passwords to console logon only". Read the "Explain" tab. Do not disable this policy for exposed computers. Rather assign passwords to all non-Guest accounts.

This policy will force a network login to use the Guest account when the login name/account has no password, as was the case in this problem statement. Note that the Guest account was enabled for all tests. To test this policy:
1) Remove the Administrator password on the Win7 system. Then log out and log in again on the Win7 machine.
2) Restart the XP machine. The password on this machine can be blank or not.
3) Right click on the Win7 Computer icon and select Manage > Shared Folders >Sessions; there should be no sessions listed. You may need to use the Refresh button at the top of the pane.
4) On the XP machine, log in as Administrator and via Win Explorer list the network computers on your LAN. Click on the name for the Win7 computer. Yiou should get a logon dialog box. For the user name enter "Administrator", and no password since the Win7 passowrd waas set blank. The logon should be successful.
5) On the Win7 machine, refresh the Sessions list; it should now list the Guest account.
6) Now on the Win7 machine, set a password for the Administrator account, then log out and back in again.
7) Repeat the entire process from step 2. You should again be able to log on from the XP machine, but the Win7 Sessions list should show the Win7 Administrator account being used.
8) Disable the Guest account. Start from Step 2 again, but remove the password from the Win7 Admin account. Log on from the XP machine should fail entirely because of the policy and the disabled Guest account.
9) Repeat step 8 but set a password for the Admin account. You should again be able to log on from the XP machine and get the Admin account on the Win7 machine.
10) You can repeat the above steps with the policy disabled, the Guest account disabled and the Win7 Admin password removed, and log in from the XP machine with a blank password. You should be able to log in and get the Win7 Admin account without a problem. You will also see an ANONYMOUS LOGON session.

Now you see why this policy should be enabled and the Admin password set non-blank.

A:Guest Account has Admin folders as shortcuts

Hello Avie, I am afraid I am not sure what you mean in your above post ^?

I got a little confused. Do you mean that you are sharing folders and/or sharing public folders and the guest account has access to files stored in them? I do not know of any other way in which the guest account can access Admin account folders. If so, type "Change advanced sharing options" without quotes into the start menu search bar, and select options to NOT share public folders and NOT share folders and printers. In addition, make sure you DO select password protected sharing to force a password requirement for all network connected computers in the event you decide later on to start sharing (added security).

If I missed the mark, please explain further. Hope this helps

Hi there, I have setup a guest account on Windows 7 Ultimate 32-bit and noticed that after logging in to the guest account, I am able to access my own account folder (admin account). This is wierd as this should not happen. Any user logged in to the guest account should not be able to see the contents of the admin account.

How can I prevent this from happenning? Can you also suggest any third party software that can do this?

Thanks

A:Preventing Guest from accessing Admin account

Hello werty.

I think the contents that are viewable to the guest account are the "shared folders", or is this incorrect? The guest account should not be able to see all your files and folders, only shared folders and public folders, according to your settings in "advanced sharing options" (Found by typing the phrase without quotes into your start menu search bar).

If you do not want that function, make sure to turn off public folder sharing and file and printer sharing, and make sure you turn password protected sharing ON (so a password is required for any networked computers as added security).

I suggest you try to enable the built in administrator account, log out and then back into the new admin account and then see if you can change your user account back to being an administrator account.

Here are the tutorials you will need to do this:

Administrator account - Enable or Disable in Windows 10

Account Type - Change in Windows 10

Notice that there are several options for doing each change - you may need to try more than one before you find the one that works for you.

Hope this helps!

Phil

Hey, so no matter what I try, I can't get the program Miro to open in my actual account. I've tried uninstalling and reinstalling multiple versions of the program, but none of them will actually open. The only thing that has worked is by running it as an admin from the guest account, however, all of the files that I need are on my actual account.

If I double click or right click then hit "Open", I'll get the circle near my mouse that says it's working, and there will be a spike in my CPU usage, but nothing will appear. When I run task manager and look at processes, Miro will appear there, but I am unable to see it.

If I try to run as admin from my account, I get the same result.

Any advice?

So here is an interesting problem I ran into after working on the family computer (I was away at college and just got back for break).

After removing all the viruses, I was left with a computer where both the main user account and the Admin account did not have Admin rights. I can log into the Administrator account, but I cannot do even the most simplest of things, such as open Control Panel. So, I am at a loss to fix this. So simply enough, how does one restore administrative rights to the admin account when it has lost them.

Info:
Windows XP Home SP2
Control Panel, and many related functions, along side with such things as leftclick->properties on My Computer do not work (It says privilege removed, contact admin).
Even the Help will not open.

Please download Trend Micro's HJTInstall.exe to your Windows Desktop.

Doubleclick HJTInstall.exe . The application will install by default to C:\Program Files\Trend Micro\HijackThis
Click on the Install button. A shortcut icon will be created on your Windows Desktop.
When the installation finishes, the HijackThis application will launch.
Click on the Do a system scan and save a log file button. When the scan is complete, a log file should open in notepad.
On the notepad document, click Edit>Select All>Edit>Copy and then paste the contents of the log file into your next reply to this thread.

>>Please-Do Not use the Analyze This button-the results can be dangerous if misinterpreted.
>>Please-Do Not have HijackThis 'fix' anything yet. Most of what if finds will be harmless or even required.

I have two Windows VMs, one Windows 7 and the other Windows 8. On both machines there is an account with administrative rights. On the Windows 7 VM if I run a DOS cmd window it is run with with administrative rights. However, on the Windows 8 VM the DOS cmd window has NO administrative rights.

Has anything changed between Windiws 7 and 8 in this respect?

Thanks

So this is what happened, I have a personal reason why I need to recreate a account. I accidentally open up a guest account and made that guest account as a Admin. Then I deleted the main account which is a User and Admin. Now I only have a Admin-Guest account. I need to use programs such as Photoshop but under Admin-guest I couldn't use them.

I tried making a new Account, I typed 'Aaron' for the Username, but they said you can't use '[email protected](%)' for your username. I tried other username such as testing, abcd and such. All without symbol. They still give me the same problem.

I tried using netplwiz and make a account at the end, it says, access denied.

Please help please. I can't have a reformat for this computer coz of personal reason too. Sorry it caused inconveniences. Please please pleas help!!!

A:A admin account under a Guest account.

Hi StolenChips,

Welcome to Vista Forums!

First, try to access the built-in Administrator Account to see if you can create another Administrator Account or fix the one you already have: Administrator Account. If you can access and work with this account, but can't fix the current account, create another Administrator Account (and while you're at it, create yet another as a backup in case this or something like it happens again - if it's working, you're somewhat lucky - the next time may not be the same and the following procedure may be the only option) and treat the situation like a corrupt user account to transfer your data and profile information. To do this use http://windows.microsoft.com/en-AU/windows-vista/Fix-a-corrupted-user-profile.

I know you don't want this, but it's probably your only remaining choice (and you don't need a personal reason not to want to do it - NOBODY ever wants to do it). If that doesn't work, the best bet (I would even say the only choice) is to try to save your data and then do a clean install or a restore to factory conditions to re-create a valid Administrator account. To save your data, try Use Ubuntu Live CD to Backup Files from Your Dead Windows Computer - How-To Geek.
This should give you enough access to the system to backup your important data (if you can't get in any other way - if you can, use normal procedures to backup or copy/paste the data). If that doesn’t work, try slaving the drive to another computer and recovering the data using that other computer to access the disk.

Once done, you can do a clean install either using the genuine Windows Vista Installation Disk or the Recovery Disk or the Recovery Partition (whatever process is dictated by your computer manufacturer – you may need to contact them for the procedure and perhaps to get recovery disks). To do a clean install proceed as follows: http://www.winsupersite.com/showcase/winvista_install_03.asp (adapted as necessary by the procedures of your computer manufacturer). Then you will need to re-install all your programs, reset all your preferences, reconfigure your network and email settings, restore your backed up data, run Windows Update with possibly nearly 150 updates pending,...

I wish there were alternatives, but this situation doesn't present many because Vista is designed for security and anything less would potentially compromise the system and allow people to hack into it using methods designed to recover from something like this.

I hope this helps.

Good luck!

Like the title says I mean WTF It was a custom that a so-called friend of the family conned my mother into buying at inflated prices I checked Told my mom not to trust him but she felt sorry for him because he just lost his job working for a company that make computers Loser actually has the balls to act like I am a idiot that don t know anything about computers speaking to me like I read two account admin CDs the can from not my from I accounts. but Guest XP other Home am a baby This isn t the only problem I have but most of the others are manageable I had to put in a new RAM chip because the one he place in was only had megs added a gig RAM chip from best buy and a new sound card because there was no sound card I can read CDs from my XP Home Guest account but not from the other two admin accounts. Anyways I can see the disk drive in I can read CDs from my XP Home Guest account but not from the other two admin accounts. my computer and it knows when there is a cd in there I have to manually access the files or exe for installing things like Microsoft Office in Guest it basically does not autorun when a cd is place in but I don t even get that in my admin accounts It either sits there doing nothing or it tells me to insert a cd when I try right clicking on the disk drive in the I can read CDs from my XP Home Guest account but not from the other two admin accounts. admin accounts EDIT I am pretty sure that this problem has something to do with the OS or at least part of the software because I have taken the drives out and placed them in another computer before Unfortunately the guy that made the thing refused to give me the OS installion disk Didn t bother to put a CD image on there either

If you like, you could try refreshing Windows 8 to see if it will set you up another administrator account. You may need to do so at boot. Be sure to back up anything that you do not want to lose first though.

I thought the user had to have admin rights for a PC to become infected. Is this not true? I removed System Tool 2011 on someone's PC today. The UAC was enabled and they did not have admin rights. This was a 32 bit Vista PC. The software was removed from their profile, so I know they were logged in as them self when the malware was installed. Somehow the install used the administrator account?

I have 4 profiles setup on my boy's PC. An admin account for myself and then 1 each for my 3 boys. All 3 of their accounts are limited for obvious reasons, but can I login as an administrator from one of their limited profiles?

The reason being, is that if I am trying to do something from one of their profiles and I can't perform the task because I'm not the administrator, it's a pain to logout and then log back in on my account.

There has to be an easier way...No?

TIA

Greg

A:[SOLVED] Admin rights from a limited account

you're on XP so this is quite an annoying task, it's easier in vista but i'll see if i can help you out... what sort of task are you thinking of completing, there are many workarounds, you may/may not know that XP has a "System" user which has administrator privelages, XP can be tricked to run tasks from the command prompt as this system account... It all depends on the task though, we'll need more details on the type of task?

If not then you could enable quick user switching or whatever it's called (where you log out and log in but your programs are still running in the origional user etc etc...

As i've said post back with the type of tasks you wish to complete and i'll try and help...

I assume that you were working from within his account in moving the shortcuts, and gave the password to let you access folders in your account. The result is that the file permissions on those folders have changed to let him in whenever he wants. If this is correct, you should be able to reset the permissions on each of those folders using this article in the Techguy Library of Knowledge:
http://library.techguy.org/wiki/File_Permissions

By the way if you have Windows 7, you may be able to use the Windows Parental Controls to help keep him out of mischief.

Trying to delete files on a CD? Surely you jest!!! A CD is a read only device, you can NOT delete anything off of a CD.
How did you install Windows 10 without making yourself the Administrator. I've installed W-10 at least a dozen times so far and I've always come up as the ONE and ONLY Administrator.
But still, I have to install and use "Grant Admin Full Control" to be able to 'Take Ownership' of certain files and folders.

A:Account(admin rights) denied all access IMMEDIATELY upon log-in

Does Safe Mode function normally?
That is to say if you boot in safe mode are you able to perform basic functions and use the system to some extent?

If this is not a registry or av/security related problem the easiest fix would likely be SFC
SFC /SCANNOW Command - System File Checker

Some more specific detail of the nature of the problem and less of what you have done may be of assistance too.
If this is a problem with admin priveldges you are honestly probably better off doing a repair install
Repair Install
Than digging around trying to find the one setting responsible for the problem.
Component services and other various admin tools can get down right annoying to work with and can cause further problems if the least bit thing is set wrong.

My question is how do i know a program should be installled using this option??

Is it possible that a program doesn 't run correctly or without optimun capacity because of using the wrong usser account??

How do i know that i am not running as Admin by default?

Which account should i use by default in order to be optimally safe?

Why when I go to my computer/manage/Local users and group/Users/double click on Administrator i see the "Account is disabled" check box checked??

1-for safety use a standard account.
2-run app normally unless they wont run. If run as admin is needed do so.
3-Which admin account is disabled?

Just wondering is it is possible to leave admin status on a user account while removing the ability to make new accounts. Alternatively could one make a standard account have admin style(ie. altering files, running files as an admin/in admin mode, etc.) rights except the creation of new accounts? Just wondering if that is possible in Windows vanilla or with other software.

If this is answered elsewhere please just post link.

Thank you very much for your time.

A:Custom User Restrictions(ideally Admin rights -new account creation)

It's not possible.

Administrator account are, by design, capable of doing anything, that's the idea of having them in the first place. There are a few ways of imposing restrictions on admin accounts, but being an admin means that the user can simply lift them himself.

The alternative you propose is quite possible, within the limits of normal user accounts. Any account can manage the files within his own profile at will, and change all his personal settings, but nothing else. To perform admin-only tasks, he can use UAC to elevate, where he must provide an admin user/password to gain his privileges temporarily (to be true, it's the admin who actually do that, but within a standard user session, this being the scenario where UAC shines).

What's your idea about this? What do you want to achieve?

My account on Windows 7 64-bit has become a "guest account" with no rights. I cannot do anything anymore! Everytime I try and do anything (even a simple system restore) I get the message from user account control which tells me to insert an administrator's password. There is no place to insert the password and the "yes" icon is disabled.

I have no idea how this happened. The computer is 2 days old!

Does anyone know how I can manage to give myself administrative rights again?

Thanks

I have discovered that there is a difference between the original local "Administrator" account and my (local) admin account. For instance my admin account cannot add a new user, whereas "Administrator" can.

I absolutely do not want an MS online account - I want to have a local Admin account (not "Administrator" itself) but with the same rights as Administrator, for example being able to add a new user.

This was possible in previous versions of Windows - can it still be achieved and if so, how?

A:Give Local account with Admin rights, same access as "Administrator"?`

You need to add your new local account to the administrators group. To do this log in with your original Administrator account. Then open an elevated command prompt (right click on start and select Command Prompt (admin).

Then type: net localgroup administrators "UserName" /add

where UserName is the name of your new local account.

You can check which users belong to the various groups with these commands:
net localgroup guests
net localgroup users
net localgroup administrators

On Windows XP, installing iTunes requires admin rights. However, it is not good to use an admin account for regular work. For the Palm Desktop, the workaround was to grant admin rights to the user account, install the application using the user-turn-admin account, then ungrant admin rights. Will this last step cause problems for iTunes, or does iTunes require admin rights for its regular operation (outside of being installed)?

Hi all,

I was looking at the event viewer and noticed that there are multiple "logoff" events - event id 4634 - associated with the guest accolunt on my computer. The guest account is disabled. There is no associated "logon" event with matching event id although there are numerous SYSTEM logon events and one rather curious "anonymous user" logon event.

I am concerned that this may suggest a trojan but have no other symptons or issues to concern me other than these entries.

Can anyone shed any light?

A:The User Profile (Administrator Account) Service failed to logon and then left with only Guest Account in Windows 7

Hi,

Occasionally, Windows might not read your user profile correctly, such as if your antivirus software is scanning your computer while you try to log on.
Please try restarting your computer and logging on with your user account again.

If the issue still persists, please restart in safe mode to log on with the built-in administrator account:
1. Restart your computer and hit F8 multiples times until you see a menu-like screen, if you see the Windows splash screen then repeat this step
2. Highlight and hit enter on Safe Mode with Command Prompt. Try logging in there.
3. If you are able to login, once a command prompt pops up, type: net user administrator password /active:yes (you can specify whatever password you want for the administrator
account.)
4. If you get a message saying "The command completed successfully", then restart your computer by typing: shutdown -r
5. Boot up again pressing F8, but this time choose just Safe Mode.
6. You will be able to login as Administrator with the password you set in Step 3.

Then try the following methods:
Method 1: Fix these user account profile on these computer

Method 2: Log on to Windows and copy your data to a new account
Method 3: Delete the error SID and create a new profile

So this is probably the strangest problem I have ever encountered with Windows About two or three months ago I noticed that my user account had suddenly changed into a guest account I get prompted for an administrator password when trying to do any tasks that require administrator privilege It is not a huge hassle as I know the administrator account password Here a change changed it User can into account, I account how back guest is where it becomes very strange When I turn my computer on it automatically logs me into my user account the guest account When I got into the user accounts section of the control panel and try to manage user accounts it shows exactly zero user accounts on my computer Also when I try to change my user account the guest account to an administrator account precisely nothing happens It User account changed into a guest account, how can I change it back gets evens stranger When I log out of Windows the only user account I can pick from to log back into Windows is the generic quot Administrator quot account My user account is nowhere to be found When I go to the control panel and try to manage accounts only the administrator account is listed There is an option turn on a generic guest account but nothing related to my original user account is shown Again this is in contrast to when I am logged into my user account the User account changed into a guest account, how can I change it back guest account and see exactly zero user accounts listed on the manage accounts screen I feel that I am pretty good at avoiding bad websites and I do have an antivirus program installed not that that will prevent my computer from being infected but I have used it to do full system scans and I have found nothing on my computer every time Additionally I have Windows updates set to be automatically installed so all of the updates have been installed on my version of Windows I tried asking Microsoft support directly all I got was that no user accounts showing up under the manage user accounts tab is a pretty bad sign and that in order to fully diagnose the problem I would need to sign up for the quot Assure Plan quot or whatever it was called which cost for one year Forget that option for now Does anyone know how to resolve this issue How can I switch my original user account from a guest account and then how could I make it an administrator account once I have retrieved it so-to-speak from being a phantom guest account I mean I know the administrator password and all and so I have been able to essentially use my computer as if nothing is wrong But this whole issue seems very very strange and so I want to see what you guys have to say about it I hope these are not the signs of a more serious and potentially major issue Thanks in advance for anyone's help with this

A:guest account - normal account access in xp professional

Not sure I understand your question or problem. Maybe this info will help.

If you are using Simple File Sharing (Control Panel - Folder Options - View tab - Use simple file sharing) it should quietly use the network guest account for access and there should be no prompt. If there is the system has a problem.

If you are using Advanced File Sharing (not using Simple File Sharing) you should get the prompt for a regular account/password.

Hello. I can't open the guest folder usgin my admin ccount on windows 7. Each time I need a file I have to login using guest account and its frustrating. I just clic on the folder and nothing happens

A:Can't access to guest account files from another account

Administrator account is not for general usage, and NOT your own account.
Administrator account required password to access.
Usually, no one use Administrator account.
Do note the differences between "Administrator" account and "admin" rights.
Administrator account have full rights to anything and everything.
"Admin" rights is just act as administrator and is not an account.

As the 1st newly create account (mainly your own account) may have that admin rights.
With admin rights, you are accessible to create accounts for other users.

Also for guest account, by default have no password.
Guest account is always available, but need to initiate it for use, and no password is needed.

If you create guest account, it will not be a guest account, and this will be another user account, but the name "Guest" may conflict with the system created "Guest" account.

In conclusion, you may started the wrong way.

So, if your had manually create an Guest account with password, it is not a guest account at all.
But an user account with the name "Guest".
When you activated the Guest account, there will not be any password.

I bought a shiny new laptop yesterday with windows 8 pre-installed. After setting a few things up, i restarted the computer for the first time. At this time the computer downloaded many updates. On start up since my user account has been downgraded to a guest account. This is the only account on the computer, as such i do not have administrator rights and i am unable to log in as an administrator.

having read other peoples posts i believe i may have to restore the computer back to factory settings but i am cannot figure out how to do this without being the administrator.

Please help me!

My kid uses Guest Account in Windows 8.1. The Family Safety seems unable to apply to the Guest Account, right? So I have to create another account with the Family Safety applied. But, my kid does not want to lose all game data in the Guest Account. How to move all the data from the Guest Account to another account so that my kid can play the game from the new account without losing anything? Thank you for your answer.

A:How to move data from Guest Account to another Account?

I have moved data from one account to another several times. Most of the time, it goes really well! However, finding, identifying [safe to move], copying and/or moving folders' files from guest to a standard account is very geeky! If you are not properly geeky, it can go really not well at all. I recommend copying the files from folders, I do not recommend trying to move folders. How geeky, how skilled, do you regard yourself concerning Explorer [which was once called File Manager back when Fred Flintstone used windows]?

Hi
I have an account problem with Windows XP on my PC. The Windows Welcome page shows both my user account (password protected) and the guest account. When I attempt to login using my user account the PC opens the guest account. The settings for this are as if the PC has just come from the factory and has none of my files in My Docs or Desktop. When I open user accounts in Control Panel it only shows guest account as running. I have tried to do a System Restore but after a selecting a restore point the screen sticks on "gathering information" and won't go any further.
Help please, I have a lot of important inforamtion stored in various memories and also important emails in Outlook Express which I can't access

Thanks

A:User account opens as guest account

Your user profile has become corrupted. If you have Windows XP Pro (not home) at the login screen, pres CTRL+AL+DEL 3 times fast. This will give you the classic login screen. Here log in as Administrator, leave the Password blank unless you set a password for the admin account. Here go to Start/Run and type control userpasswords and press enter. Create a new user account with admin rights. Log out of the Administrator account and login as the new user. Browse to C:/Documents and Settings open up your old user profile folder and Copy the My Documents, Favorites, Desktop and Start Menu folders and Paste them into your new profile folder overwriting the empty ones.

I am trying to download Adobe Digital Editions and I keep receiving the error message

Unable to elevate to administrative rights, error 786

I am the admin! I have turned off the password, I have right clicked on the program and chosen 'run as admin'-then nothing happens.
Any help would be appreciated

SOLUTION: download the setup.exe for ADE, not using the flash install version.

Before you run it, right click on it and check "run as administrator" under the compatability tab. Also under the general tab I clicked on "unblock," which might have made a difference.

If you did in fact delete the base admin account a repair install is probably your easiest out.

A:Am somehow now Guest User and can't log in admin

You could try cracking the password.

Windows 2000 and XP passwords are stored in a file called SAM (Security Accounts Manager). It's located in the windows\system32\config directory. Passwords are encrypted and stored within SAM as a password hash. Passwords look something like this: 8F J7 F3 GK S3 lL O4 E1 G9. To figure out your lost password, you have to extract the encrypted hash from SAM and crack it.

If no one else has any ideas that are less drastic I'll let them post before giving in-depth instructions on cracking your password.

A:My acct can't write DVD but Guest & Admin can

As a work around to the issue, download something like ImgBurn or BurnAware and use that. Much better than the built in burning function of Windows and gives a lot more flexibility.

Hi and welcome

It seems like who ever set up that system (you didnt buy it new I assume) locked the permissions down for whatever reason. If the SU admin cant change the perms it might either be owned by trusted installer (sys proc) or the former owner locked even teh SU out.

Best way to get rid of it is (yep you guessed it) do a clean install with the win 7 dvd if you have it.

If you do have the win 7 dvd you can also try a repair install. Both these assume that you dont have a backup to restore from

I'm sure there must be a simple way to do this, but I don't know how. At the hotel where I work I setup the lobby computer. There is my admin acct and then the hotel guests acct, the latter is a windows "guest" acct. I would like to go into that acct and delete some things, but I can't figure out how to get admin privileges within that acct to do so.

Thanks.

A:Admin Privileges in Guest Acct?

hcour,

First, on the admin account, enable (temporarily or otherwise) UAC: User Account Control - UAC - Change Notification Settings

Then go into the limited account and change whatever you would like, with your admin user name and password handy.

Hope this helps

I've been plagued Trojans and re-directs lately with a W7 Standard Account which I thought and taught was the right choice for safer web browsing. Not as many system ports open to attack.

So, if MS recommends the Standard Account over Administrator for safety reasons, is using the Guest Account for web browsing safer yet?

I dunno' ...

I use IE10 and I am a Fully Updated Safe Surfer. No other Browsers or Bars installed.

A:Is W7 Guest Account the Safest Account to Use On the Web?

It is possible that you computer is infected in such a way the most antivirus tools cannot find the infection. These types of infections try to download/install other infections (which might be caught by your antivirus program). There is a place in your system spec for the antivirus tool, please update that field when you get a chance.

If you have java installed, uninstall it or at least disable it. Let us know if you need help doing that.

You might want to try a scan using this tool:
What is Windows Defender Offline?

But to answer your question, you do not want to use the guest account for day to day use.

I would like to allow the "Guest" User to use my Dial up connection (MSN). When I log in as the Guest, I can't even access the modem, much less the service.

In addition, I cen't get the Explorer Icon to move to the "Internet" porition of the start menu when I'm logged in as the guest. This is just a side question, though, since I would really like to secure my files while allowing roomates and others to use my Internet connection.

Windows XP Professional, If that is important.

Thanks in advance, this is a GREAT site for help!

A:How do I use the Guest Account to use my Dial-up Account?

By default the Guest user account has very little rights assigned for security reasons. You can change which rights are assigned to it, but I would wonder why you want the guest account to access the modem. Hackers would have a field-day on your PC.
