Change all references held by previous owner/administrator to new owner

Q: Change all references held by previous owner/administrator to new owner

I purchased my HP from a big computer store with Vista home installed on it It was an out of the box sale I thought I could avoid a wait for the to new by Change owner/administrator held owner references all previous comptuer I wanted The company Change all references held by previous owner/administrator to new owner that sold it to me was listed as the administrator The old owner took off their password before I took possession of the computer I purchased I followed instructions on how to put on a password to start the computer However there are dozens of fiels named after the previous administrator I tried to find out how to change the administrator globally to my name There is still an administrator account name and it appears the previous administrator is still above my permission status - even though i am the computer owner don't think I am the ultimate administrator yet I read that not being able to use screen print was a result of not being the administrator I can't make the screen print work either I assume some members have dealt with these matters before I would greatly appreciate anyone directing me to some good quot how to fix quot information Thank you and boy do I miss XP

Preferred Solution: Change all references held by previous owner/administrator to new owner

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/directdownload.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I recently bought an Acer AX3810 with Vista 7 Home Premium 64 bit from the widow of my neighbor. I had transferred all his personal files and copied all the photographs to an external hard drive for her then deleted all the files using "Eraser". I cannot seem to be able to delete the previous owner as administrator. His file has a little padlock symbol on it. I changed his name to mine in the "Manage user accounts" but no matter, it is still "him" that is logged on. I created a new account in my name and then changed the status from standard to administrator but he is still "there". I feel like I am being haunted. Any ideas?

Haha, I don't know what else to call it, but how do you change the owner where it says C:/User/Owner

Thanks

A:How do I change the owner in C:/user/owner

Hello Nick, and welcome to Vista Forums.

The only way to change the C:\Users\Owner folder name is to create a new administrator account, then delete the old C:\Users\Owner account from within the new account. Be sure to copy the contents that you want to save from the old accounts user folders into the corresponding new account's user folders to restore them to the new account.

Hope this helps,
Shawn

P.S.

This picture shows how my name has been changed in User Accounts and in regedit, as displayed by running winver, but yet all my files are still found at C:\Users\Owner.
When I go to C:\Users, the Owner folder is locked and cannot be renamed even though my account type is administrator, as seen here.
How do I really change the name from Owner to a name of my choosing?

I bought a computer from a friend. It had ME on it. I installed XP and everything works great EXCEPT that his user name is everywhere. Even though the user account is under my name, all the documents and settings are still using his name. Another problem is that in IE6 when I click on history, all of the addresses are "[email protected]://blahblah.com". Therefore, they are unknown addresses when clicked on. How can I change these things?

First post here. A wonderful site here.
My brother bought a new emachines system from Walmart about 6 weeks ago. Waits untill this weekend to open it and get it running. It runs fine BUT under the system properties it has someone else's name! The machine is already registered in another name. I suspect it may have been resold to my brother. Since 30 days has gone by he can't return it. He just wants to delete this person's name so I suspect there is a registry entry that can be changed. Could someone help? Thanks!

I bought a used Samsung N-150 netbook with Windows 7 Starter. The previous owner deleted his user account, but. left the files associated with it. I will be the only user and do not want to be annoyed by having to log out as a user in order to log in as administrator. The only account I want on the machine is the administrator account.

So far, everything I try to set-up or save defaults to the left-over file structure under the previous owner's user's name.

After numerous searches for a way to get rid of all files associated with this guy, I am about ready to re-format the drive, then re-install the operating system from the recovery partition.

Is there an easier way to get this guy out of the computer?

F2 into bios and change the ASSET TAG Field.  Otherwise you need to use the DCCU utility to change this.
http://en.community.dell.com/techcenter/os-applications/w/wiki/2545
You can ONLY change the asset tag however NOT the service tag if it has a value.

Maintenance

Service Tag
Displays the Service Tag of your computer.

Asset Tag
Allows you to create a system asset tag if an asset tag is not already set.
This option is not set by default.

SERR Messages

This option is enabled by default.
Some graphics cards require the SERR Message mechanism be disabled.

I run an HP Pavillion 515n w/XP Home SP2.

About a year ago, I received some bad advice (not from this site) and ran a non-destructive recovery on my computer. When that was done, the system created two new folders for the admin & owner accounts. My folder list now shows:

Administrator
Administrator.Home
All Users
Default User
Guest
LocalService
NetworkService
Owner
Owner.Home
User Account
Visitor

The system completely ignores the base Administrator and Owner accounts and utilizes the accounts followed by .Home. I am also denied access to the base Owner account. When I check my User Accounts, I only show me as the computer administrator, a user account with limited access and a guest account.

Is there any way to access the base folders, move everything back to them and get rid of the .Home folders?

Hiya and welcome to Tech Support Guy

Are you still having this problem? If so, can you do the following:

Please download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware from Here or Here

Double Click mbam-setup.exe to install the application.
Make sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
Once the program has loaded, select "Perform Quick Scan", then click Scan.
The scan may take some time to finish,so please be patient.
When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
When disinfection is completed, a log will open in Notepad and you may be prompted to Restart.(See Extra Note)
The log is automatically saved by MBAM and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.
Copy&Paste the entire report in your next reply.
Extra Note:
If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be presented with 1 of 2 prompts, click OK to either and let MBAM proceed with the disinfection process,if asked to restart the computer, please do so immediatly.
Download and scan with SUPERAntiSpyware Free for Home Users
Double-click SUPERAntiSpyware.exe and use the default settings for installation.
An icon will be created on your desktop. Double-click that icon to launch the program.
If asked to update the program definitions, click "Yes". If not, update the definitions before scanning by selecting "Check for Updates". (If you encounter any problems while downloading the updates, manually download and unzip them from here.)
Under "Configuration and Preferences", click the Preferences button.
Click the Scanning Control tab.
Under Scanner Options make sure the following are checked (leave all others unchecked):
Close browsers before scanning.
Scan for tracking cookies.
Terminate memory threats before quarantining.

Click the "Close" button to leave the control center screen.
Back on the main screen, under "Scan for Harmful Software" click Scan your computer.
On the left, make sure you check C:\Fixed Drive.
On the right, under "Complete Scan", choose Perform Complete Scan.
Click "Next" to start the scan. Please be patient while it scans your computer.
After the scan is complete, a Scan Summary box will appear with potentially harmful items that were detected. Click "OK".
Make sure everything has a checkmark next to it and click "Next".
A notification will appear that "Quarantine and Removal is Complete". Click "OK" and then click the "Finish" button to return to the main menu.
If asked if you want to reboot, click "Yes".
To retrieve the removal information after reboot, launch SUPERAntispyware again.
Click Preferences, then click the Statistics/Logs tab.

Hi I've just bought netbooks one each for my daughters running windows xp sp I set the first one up with E's name on it She decided she wanted the other colour so I created another administrator account with M's name and then deleted E's administrator account The problem is that E is still showing as the Registered Owner of windows xp in My Computer Properties General I went into the registry to see if I could change the name but there are no details at all now registry see administrator registered can't Deleted and in owner I showing Deleted administrator and now I can't see registered owner in registry when I go to regedit HKEY Current User software microsoft windows NT current user - only shows one entry saying Default REG SZ value not set Whereas on my other laptop it shows all the registry details for windows registered owner etc when I do this I have tried showing hidden files but this still does not show the details Did I delete the registry details when I deleted E's administrator account Can I restore them by using system restore to an earlier date Or will this mean that M's administrator account may not exist and if E's account is not restored then I may not be able to access anything Or are the details still there somewhere and do I have to click on something to show them again I'm worried that not having registry details showing in this place may affect the installation of future programs I haven't put anything on it yet I can still see the windows xp registration number when I right click My Computer and go to Properties but it shows E's name and I'd like it to be M's name And I would like to see all the details back in the registry again Please help

How do I permanently show only one "Owner/User"?
- the Welcome screen (and after hibernation/sleep) always shows Admin + Owner
- as the only user + administrator ... the options are pointless for me
- I would like to skip the Welcome user options all together.
I have had days of problems understanding the Win-7 "security settings" on each and every folder
and maybe I have saboatged myself.
The PC is only used for internet browsing, surfing, research, no games
- I am a MS-Excel + MS-Word + AutoCad programmer in VBA, but that is my limit
ie, Office 2003, and some VBScript -- but I am no expert

Win7_Home
No MS Office programs, nor any third party open-office
Classic Shell 3.6.3 ... on Start menu (I am an XP die hard)
Custom programs...
Metapad.exe -- (portable mode)
Explorer++.exe -- (portable)
ClipX.exe (clipboard tool)
MyDefrag.exe
ShiftOff.exe
Virtual Keyboard -- (portable)

Any help would be appreciated

A:Welcome screen shows Administrator and Owner icons (options)

To skip the welcome screen altogether you can do by using netplwiz.exe (Start/run, or search for it).
Select the user you want to log on as (eg Owner), and then uncheck the "Users must enter a username/password..." prompt.

Be aware that this may have security implications by bypassing a log on.

If you want to log on as administrator you can just log off and it will show the log on screen as you see it now.

Hi. I have a window 7 computer that shows my husband as the owner when I sign into the computer. I would like to be the owner as the computer belongs to me. My husband has no objection as he has his own computer.

Can this easily be done? If yes, can someone let me know how to do this.

Help, as usual, is appreciated.

Thank you.

Hello Carole,

You can use the method in the tutorial below to change the registered owner of the PC.

Registered Owner and Organization

I am helping a friend clean up her PC. It is a WinXPsp2 Home edition, Pentium 4, 1.50Ghz, with 512Mb memory of which 384 Mb is available (the rest is shared for video).

When she bought the PC her then husband registered it to his name.

She now wants to remove the name of her ex-husband from the PC. I think that I have seen a way that the name of the Registered owner (as it appears when you right click on My Computer and select properties) can be changed but can't remember how it was done.

I've had a search in the registry for her ex-husband's name and it occurs numerous time in the HKEY_CURRENT_USER hive; I stopped looking at that point.

I'm comfortable with making registry changes if that is required.

Your help will be much appreciated.

I recently purchased a Dell desktop for my son. I was able to change him to system administrator in the log-on area, but the previous owner's name is still in the registration properties, as well as in the info such as "c:\Documents and Settings\Previous Owner\My Documents\My Music". How is this information changed? I have a legal copy of an XP Pro upgrade. Would that allow the change to be made (and would I lose any data currently on the machine)? I would prefer to just change something in the registry, or whatever it takes. Please help!!!

A:How do I change Primary Account/Owner

Just make sure the new owner/login has administrative rights, have the new owner login and delete your old account. Are even better...most new laptops come with an option to restore to factory defaults. That's what I would do if it was an option.

When found, doubleclick on the RegOwner key and change the name to yours.
Above it you will find RegCompany. Change that to your company or e.g. At Home.
Press F3 for the next occurrence, change it, press F3 etc. until the end.

Repeat this for RegisteredOwner and RegisteredOrganization.

Do NOT change any other name-occurrences, as that may invalidate UserID/Password for other programs. Enjoy what's on it.

Boot with your xp cd [cd set as first boot device in the bios] Choose install from the first menu. The next menu will show any previous xp installs and give you the option to repair the install. Choose your original xp install and let it repair for you.

After a repair install you will need to reinstall all updates, service pack 2, etc.

BTW you cannot just change a mb and expect the system to boot. Sometimes it will and sometimes it will not. If proprietary chipset / mb drivers were installed, it will not boot.

Hi,

I would like to know if there is any way we can control (or modify)the "change owner to" drop box list in windows for a particular resource (for example say a file) using a vbscript or batch script.

the reason i am asking this is because for usbstor.inf file , i have given ownership access to domain admin group via batch script, but since administrator and my id are appearing in the "change owner to" drop box, i am again able to regain ownership back and then modify the permissions for the usbstor.inf file. I have tried using subinacl for denying the take ownership permission for the administrator group and my id , but even then i am able to take ownership back.
any help to resolve this issue is reallyr really appreciated

In order to get rid of the *.zip folder view in WinExplorer on a64bit WIn7 system I tried to delete (according to some tutorials) the Registry key:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\Classes\CLSID\{E88DCCE0-B7B3-11d1-A9F0-00AA0060FA31}

Unfortuantely this is NOT possible immediately.
When I try to delete it then I got a popup

Cannot delete.... Error while delting key.

Ok, so I tried to get ownership of this key by right clicking-->Permissions
then selecting "Users" and enabling "Full control" the "apply" button but I got here:

Unable to save permission changes on ....
Access denied"

Why?

This last error comes for all Owners: SYSTEM, Administrators, trusted Installers.

I have Admin rights. So what more do I need to get ownership?

Even worse: Every change in owner is rejected as well.

Peter

In addition, you might see if the tutorial below may help with this.

Will I run into any problem if I change the Registered Owner (and Registered Company) for my system? (to fix a typo!)

The method is described here:
Registered Owner and Organization - Vista Forums

I did see that some Registry installer sections for non-MS products have picked up the current Registered Owner, so will contact those companies separately.

A:Q: Ok to change "Registered owner"?

Nothing will happen, expect that you own all the files and can edit them now.

Hi bugs461, and welcome to TSG.

Notepad is not an e-mail program that would normally open an e-mail message. It might be used to open certain types of files that are attached to an e-mail message. Are you trying to open attachments to e-mails? A wrong program association in the the email program may be causing the mail software to use Notepad to open a non-text file.

New laptop - had about a month. When I got the computer I created my user account and named the laptop right after starting up.

I just opened Properties for the C: drive, and in Security ->Permissions for Users ->Advanced, the current owner is listed as TrustedInstaller, not me.

Obviously I can change it to match the username/computer name I created for this system, but.... is this odd?

I have a LAN connected and all sorted out at my house, but i need one thing.

I have the bad habit of leaving Pc's on around the house ( I haven't got all the programs sorted out) and i need something that i can click (Or something similar) to shutdown all the Pc's that are on or single, or disply messages.

I just need something that will give me full control of my LAN. It would be incredibly handy if you could find some Freeware software for this, i would preferably not like to use DOS based programs, as i know how to use them but prefer GUI programs.

Thank you.

Sounds like an overheating video card. Make sure that all the computers fans are working.
Check that any cabling is not blocking air flow through the case. Also check that the power supply fan is running.
If the video card does not have fan purchase an add on fan.

Hello Karizma,

"OWNER-PC" is the computer name of what appears to be a wireless PC or device that is currently connected to your network.

The error you got indicates that you do not have a permission to access this PC or device.

Do you have any PCs or devices that has you used that name for?

Hi, you might well be more successful downloading Win 10 iso (make sure you choose the right one) and using that. You then also can use that subsequently if necessary for an in place upgrade repair install (useful!).

You can find appropriate instructions in the Tutorial section (see above).

Make sure you use disk imaging to image your Win 7 so if anything goes wrong (and it did first time for me) you can restore Win 7 from your image backup.

Aomei Backupper or Macrium Reflect (free) + external storage medium for backup + their boot disk (make sure you create it).

Disk image backups are REALLY useful and allow you to restore your system in a defined time and provide a full backup.

I recently purchased an older PC from a friend of mine. My problem is that when I try to open winzip files and several other instances, the machine defaults to the previous owner's information and will not install. I have changed the ownership of the PC in the registry, but when I try to delete all references to the previous user's information, I get a message indicating the former owner (Mary Jo Duncan in this case) is a system file and can't be removed. Is there a way to get rid of ALL the previous owner's information, defaults, etc. without doing a clean install? I finally got my desktop the way I want it and would really hate to start from scratch.

Would it screw things up if I changed her name to mine in EVERY location in the registry?

Thanks for any suggestions.

I have since purchased "Microsoft Office 2000 Pro". The problem is ALL of my new "Microsoft Office 2000 Pro" software has my former employer as the "Registered Owner" by default. When installing this software it ask for my name and I entered it, but when I click to open Excell, Word, Outlook, ect... it says my former company is the registered owner on the initial start-up screen. HOW DO I CHANGE THIS TO ME, AS THE REGISTERED OWNER?
Thanks!
