I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/directdownload.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hello I have just removed much malware and viruses from a computer with windows vista. It is still running slow from time to time, having problems with freezing on the internet and I thought maybe by defragging it would fix the issue. Yes I have reset firefox many times, scanned many times fully for viruses and malware, removed and reinstalled flash player, etc. I need to first backup the C drive only because the D drive is full of crap. I cannot afford to do anything other than DVD-R to store it on. I am trying to find out how to do this. Is anyone familiar with such a process?

A:How do I backup C drive from Vista to DVD-R?

First, run CLEANMGR for each login on the PC and that includes Administrator.
This reduces the amount of data captured to at least active & meaningful.

Second, IMO backup \Users and forget all else

Have a new Netgear wireless router and can connect to it, but can only get local access only, no internet.
Tried a few things with no luck so far.
The one thing that did work was eliminating the wireless security, but dont want to leave it that way.
Seems like this is a common problem with Vista.

Can anyone help?

Thanks

A:Local Access Only With Wireless Using Windows Vista

Go to the Device Mgr, expand Network Adapters and look for yellow or red flags. It's most likely that the driver is missing or needs to be updated.

If there's any driver at all, then the led lights near the ethernet cable will be on.

Uninstall the existing driver (but do not delete it) and reboot.
The system should find the device and use the autoconfig feature to install the
correct one.

Hi, I am trying to connect my Macbook Pro to my old Vista PC over ethernet cable but I can't get them to connect. I set up static IP's on both and the PC can ping the Mac but the Mac times out when I try to ping the PC. I even had the Windows firewall turned off. I had already turned on SMB connections in file sharing. They connect fine over wifi but I want to transfer 50gb of files faster.

Thanks.

A:Can't connect to Windows Vista PC from Mac over Ethernet

From what you're saying, it sounds like you're just connecting directly using only an Ethernet cable. However, in order to connect two computers directly, you'll need to use a crossover cable (Ethernet cable with some wires changed on one end). You also have the option of using a network hub or router in between.

Respond if we can help any more. I could be understanding your situation wrong as well.

A:Windows Vista Toshiba keyboard/trackpad problems

Laptop keyboard issues?

Hi, Could be one or more problems here, but for a simple test, if the laptop has more than one USB connector, try each of them, with the extra keyboard, as it's possible the first one you tried isn't working. I have the same problem with an old HP, two out of three don't work.
Try just the keyboard plugged in, not a USB mouse at the same time.
If you get no response from the keyboard in any of the USB sockets, then it's most likely that the Windows software is not 'seeing' the keyboard.
When you first power on the laptop, do you see the white text on black background, such as 'Windows Vista' etc, then it goes to the Vista login screen ?
If your laptop is the type where it has the same Windows on as it had when new, then you may be able to do a 'Factory restore', but if the keyboards won't work, then it won't be so simple.
If it was mine, I would try a Linux CD in the DVD drive, and see if it works using that instead of Windows. That would prove if the hard drive is ok, and if the keyboard works (or not.)
If you don't have Linux CD, and you don't mind spending £5.99, you get them included with magazines such as 'Linux User'. If that does work, then you can save any files, mp3, videos, etc on the hard drive, off to a USB flash stick or external USB hard drive.
(It's not difficult, you just put the Linux disc in the drive and re boot the laptop, it will do the rest. You will end up with a different desktop, but it's not changing or using your Windows Vista at all, it won't damage it.
You may need to change the 'boot sequence' in the BIOS to force the DVD to be first, but it's fairly easy to do.)
If you find the mouse/track pad, and keyboard work, you will know the laptop's hardware is ok, and the fault really is with the Windows Vista software.
Hope that helps.

I am trying to help my sister-in-law with her laptop issues. She has a Gateway that runs Windows Vista. The computer states that is connected to the internet, we have tried both wireless and an actual cable connection, but we can not surf the internet. We have tried the internet settings options, I ran her antivirus(AVG) and no luck.
I do however remember her stating that she had virus at one time. Her AVG had not been ran in over 6 months.
I even downloaded something called WinsockxpFix on my desktop, put it on a cd and then tried running it on the laptop. It didn't help.
I am not very computer tech savvy, but she doesn't have the money to take it in and have a professional look at it.

Have you left any CD/DVD's in the drive or a USB flash drive inserted? if so remove them and try again. If you have a card reader check there is nothing in it and if a blank is fitted make sure it is properly inserted.

Will it boot from the OS disc?

Unfortunately, if this is not the case, your hard drive has probably failed. Run this diagnostic from the hard drive manufacturer. You will need to use another PC to download the ISO and burn it to a disk.

Identify the make of your hard drive and then use one of the links below to get the manufacturers diagnostic for ISO CD. Burn the image file to a CD, boot the PC with the disc in the drive and run the diagnostics. You first need to set the CD drive to 1st in the boot order in the Bios setup.

If you do not have an image burner use this free software to make the CD.

A:Windows Vista does not recognize CD drive -- virtual or physical

This sounds like a problem with drivers, as I suspect you don't know the history of this PC I would run through some basic checks. Follow this first guide to clean out any redundant drivers.

http://www.howtogeek.com/howto/windows-vista/remove-old-drivers-after-upgrading-to-new-hardware/

Then look in Device Manager, click on the View tab and select "Show Hidden Devices" see if there are any yellow warnings.

Reinstall all the chipset drivers.

Check in the Bios that the CD drive is recognised and enabled.

Run sfc /scannow and chkdsk /r from an elevated command prompt.

Let us know if you need a more detailed guide and state the make and model of the PC.

Hiya

I've just been browsing on the internet through my wireless router.
Now its not working, its saying i'm connected to the router but not letting me go online.

I did the cmd winsock thing and that made no difference. I then connected through the cable and it was working fine, now i've unplugged from the router and its loading reallllllly slow/un usable.

Whats happened? it was saying it couldnt connect to dns server 192.168.1.1, but then it started working... but now its not :/

A:Samsung Vista laptop wireless now playing up

This sounds like either a fault with the routers wireless transmission or your wireless card in the PC.

Start by resetting the router, there should be a reset button somewhere on it, usually you will need a thin wire to push into the whole and hold it until the router responds. This will reset it to default so any security settings will need to be reset.

If there is no change take a look in Device Manager for your wireless card under Network Adapters, right click on the device and select properties, check to see if it reports any problems. If no problems are reported try uninstalling the device and then reboot so that windows will reload the drivers.

Let us know how you get on.

My friend's computer (which I'm using) is stuck at loading screen. It's a Toshiba Satellite 64-bit with Windows Vista. I told him to format but he refuses because he doesn't want to lose stuff he has.

I am currently on the Safe Mode with Networking, so anything you need me to do I can do from here, except install programs.

I tried to do a virus scan with avast!, but the computer shut down. Tried again, and it shut down again. It shut down when it was about 70% done, and it had found 18 infected files. I did another scan, but this time I stopped it when it had 11 infected files and moved them to chest. And now when I do the scan it shuts down on 4%.

Can this be the cause of my problem? Or is it another thing? Solutions?

The old hard drive completely failed to the point that I am unable to recover any data on it. So I put in a new hard drive and went to reinstall Vista and got the lovely error about needing to load a driver for the hard drive. I've tried every Vista driver listed and it won't load the driver for the hard drive. I flashed the BIOS, still no luck. The BIOS does not offer any options to change the settings on how to read the hard drive.

Any suggestions on what else I could try?

A:HP Pavilion dv6911om - unable to install Vista on new hard drive

Somewhere in your bios there will be a setting to select which mode the hard drive is running in. You may well have a SATA drive which Vista should have drivers for but in this case you need to set the hard drive to run in IDE mode then it should install. After installation load all the mobo drivers which should then allow you to set the HD back to sata/raid operation which is much faster.

this occures when there is no response to the DHCP request.

First, disable the WiFi, cable a connection to the router and retry; what's the result?

While connected to the router, config it for the:
router address and DHCP range
wifi SSID, Channel
set a new admin password and save the settings.

Disable the wired interface, enable the WiFi and retry the WiFi connection

A:Vista Dell Studio black screen froze can't start in safe mode

Were there any symptoms/problems prior to this?
Remove the battery. Hold the power button down for 30 seconds. Try to boot with and without the battery.
If F2 and F12 don't work you have a serious problem,
Have you tried booting from a CD/DVD?

Is the laptop getting hot under normal use?

Go to Control panel, Power and then change the settings for standby to off and apply.

Try it again and see what happens and report back please.

It sounds like it might be an issue when trying to head into standby if its not overheating related.

If I get a Windows Vista Home Premium SP1 OEM disk can I perform a repair install without being able to boot the OS normally? I can't do anything with this computer at the moment--it just sits and does nothing. I slaved the HDD to another system and was able to read and write normally, so it's definitely a problem with Vista. Problem is I have no idea what is causing the computer to hang so I can't pull any errors and startup repair says there's no problems.

A:How do I enable sound device on Vista after I disabled it?

#1 Click on Start and then Control Panel.

#2 Click on the System and Maintenance link.

Note: If you're viewing the Classic View of Control Panel, you won't see this link. Simply double-click on the Device Manager icon and then proceed to Step 4.

#3 In the System and Maintenance window, click on the Device Manager link near the bottom of the window.

#4 look under "Sounds, video and game controllers" you should see Creative Audigy with a red X, right click it and enabled it.

A:Bluetooth device not found once Vista reset to factory settings?

Prior to resetiing? You mean you used the options to restore to factory condition? Then you almost certainly just need to re-install the driver for the blue-tooth device. Read the manual, or the website support for the laptop, where you will also find the necessary driver if you cant find it on the HDD or CD's that came with the PC

After my hard drive crashed, my brother installed a new one for me. I ordered recovery discs from Sony and he installed them also. The computer couldn't detect any operating system from what he told me so since I misplaced my Vista Home Edition he installed XP Professional. After not being able find any drivers for my Sony Vaio model VGN-FE855E I found out that my notebook is not compatible with anything besides Vista. Sony Tech people told me I should find my operating system on the recovery discs the sent me. Im trying to run them but I have a message saying: "The recovery drive letter is the same as the system drive letter". What does it mean and why I can't get my system recovered?

A:Vista system recovery problem

Hi, First I must say I have no knowledge of Sony Viao hardware, BUT you have the problem which is, when you bought the PC new, it will have had the Vista OS installed twice. Once in a partition that you never use, that will be in the condition as it was the first day you used it. The second version, is a copy of the first, but is the one you have been working with, until it crashed, or hard drive failed.
When you go into the recovery routine, the software is looking for the first copy of Vista, and then to copy it over (on top of) the second version of Vista. BUT because you have changed the hard drive for a new one, the recovery partition is not there. Your PC was pre-activated with Microsoft for your particular machine to use Vista (Home premium, or Pro or Ultimate), and will have had the drivers installed for all the devices, (touchpad, webcam, DVD, card reader etc) on the original hard drive, which you now have lost. What you do now depends on what Sony have supplied on the discs that they sent to you.
I will assume they have supplied the Vista operating system, or the Sony OEM version, plus all the drivers for your PC. So all you need to do, is to make your PC read from the DVD drive when you switch on, with the Sony disc in the DVD drive. It should then be fairly automatic, and you will need to enter some information as you go along. The most important being the 'Product key' which is printed on a sticker underneath your PC. Best to copy it down before you start. It is five blocks of letters and numbers, you will have to type them into Vista, part way through the install process. To make your Pc look at the DVD drive rather than the hard drive, you press power on, then look for a message on-screen, 'Setup=F2' or 'Boot order=F12', or similar, it may vanish off screen quickly, but if you miss it, just shut down and start again. When you see a screen with options, you look for 'Drives' or 'Boot order'. You have to make the list of your drives look like; 1st =CD/DVD, 2nd On-board IDE/SATA. (Any others in the list are not important. NOTE that you have to use certain keys, eg. cursor, enter, pg up, pg dwn, esc at this stage.)
Then put the Sony DVD into the drive, look on screen for the option 'Save changes and exit' (normally F11). Your PC will reboot, and start reading off the DVD. It will ask you various questions as you go along, (your location, time zone etc). You should find it takes about 1 1/2 hours, and you may have to put in a second DVD as supplied by SONY after Vista has installed. If all goes well, you may need to go to Microsoft's site to 'activate' Vista, but it's automatic. I will assume this is what will happen, if not, in worst case situation, that is if Sony didn't supply Vista, you MAY have to buy a new Operating system, it will be Windows 7 now, not Vista. If you do that, you will get a new 'Product key'. Also you will need to go to Sony's site to download the specific drivers for your PC. (But try your Sony supplied disc first, you should not need to spend any more money). Hope this helps.

A:Audio Service not running Vista/Toshiba laptop

I saw someone mention something about going to the Registry Editor to remove dependencies but I couldn't figure out the registry (looked like lots of gobblegook to me) but since all of my dependent processes are running just fine, I don't think that would be the answer anyway.Click to expand...

You're absolutely right. DON'T try modifying the registry for this problem. Is far more likely to do damage then any good

A few thoughts...

1. I'd first attempt to simply uninstall then reinstall your audio drivers. To uninstall, look in Ctrl Panel->Program and Features and look for your audio to uninstall. Locate the driver download from the vendor website for your computer to reinstall

2. If reinstalling doesn't solve it Also, take a look at Reference Guide to Help Setup and Troubleshoot Windows Audio and Sound Cards

3. Tho I'll also mention that SOMETIMES malware can be what interferes with audio service and prevents it from running. I mention this to also keep in mind because you say Windows Update is also reporting errors. Both your audio and Windows update problem might due to malware.

In any case, try reinstalling first and post back with any results

Have you checked for crud in your keyboard... any cause for a sticking key, sticking space bar, etc.

Don't see how the hard drive could cause the problem.

Have you looked at all the Dell Beep Codes... They are posted elsewhere on this TechSpot forum... that could give you a starting point.

A:Problem with Compaq laptop or Vista Business - blank screen after log on

Vista Display Problems

Hi, Your problem does seem to stem from the graphic driver update from Microsoft.
You uninstalled it, got desktop back, but now it looks like Windows 98.
In 'Search box' type 'appearance' (enter)
You should see a box with options about the quality of the display.
I would think you will have the option 'adjust for best performance' (A dot next to it)
That means (on a Laptop) you will have a minimum quality, but fast screen display.
It's still most likely you don't have the best Graphic drivers installed.
Tick the option, 'Let windows decide what's best for my computer'
That should give you a better display. (If no better then........)
You need to find out what graphics chip you have. In 'Search' box type 'dxdiag'
In the window you see, click on the Display Tab. Note down the NAME,
MANUFACTURER and VERSION of the Graphic chip. ( Please read #1 lower down)
'Google' that information and you will get to the makers site, (most likely Nvidia or ATI)
Go to 'downloads' and search for your option, get the best match you can see.
Download the package to 'Desktop' or somewhere you can find again.
Right click on it's icon, choose 'Run as administator', and follow prompts.
You might need to reboot, but your display should be 'as new'.

#1. (You may prefer this step) If you think drivers are wrong or old, download the program 'Drivereasy', run it, and it will find all the problem drivers. See if your network adapter driver, and Graphic adapter are in that list. Download and install. Hope that helps.

I would personally remove all the RAM except for one stick (no power to the pc first) and then reset the bios, either by the board jumper, or by removing the cmos battery.
Boot the computer to make sure it starts ok.
Do this again adding one stick at a time.
Once you have all your RAM in, reset the bios again and then power up the pc.

Fingers crossed.

Hello there I ve looked about everywhere I could to solve this issue to no avail up to now so I really hope someone here might have some answer Here s the pitch I m under Vista Home Premium not by choice though believe me ALL of my USB plugs are yet for some reason one of my external HDDs or its USB enclosure to be more specific as it is the faulty part -- my other work fine will always connect in USB transfer rate toping at an average of a pathetic - Kib s and dumb warning from Vista that using another USB plug would increase performances The interesting part is that in some particular situations yet very hard for me to replicate since it will only work one time out of a random number of tries like for instance unplugging the drive while it s working and that s not something rate another slow HDD transfer under external Vista Yet I like to do switching it off and on again and then plugging it back all this in Yet another external HDD slow transfer rate under Vista a couple of seconds the drive would then connect in USB and I d have the correct transfer rate around Mib s or so I guess Which means it is not a configuration problem with IRQs or with the way my preferences are set in Vista I suppose it proves the HDD CAN actually transfer with acceptable USB rate and Vista can also make it happen and support it with this particular HDD The problem obviously lies with the connection process which is flawed at first Yet another external HDD slow transfer rate under Vista and I can t figure out why for the life of me Not quite sure what technical info about my machine is relevant with this kind of problem so I won t provide any yet but just ask if you believe more details could help narrow it down While not an expert per se I am no average user I tried hard to figure out a way by myself before resorting to ask for help so I m hoping somebody here will maybe have some insightful advices and tricks for me to try and fix this But please no obvious beginner solutions as I ve already tried everything from that level and more eg changing cables switching to other plugs changing the removal strategy to quot Optimize for better performances quot etc as I ve seen advised on many forums before Thanks a bunch in advance to anybody taking the time to read this and reply -- Angar Note obvious enough the ultimate solution for me will be to buy a new USB enclosure one that will prove fully compatible with stupid Vista like my other two are and I intend to do just that ASAP but until I do a workaround would prove really helpful nbsp

I have a dell inspiron e1505 running windows vista and for the past few weeks, none of my USB devices that I connect work, I have tried to connect 2 different webcams, my hard drive and my phone, while they do receive power, windows says that the device has malfunctioned and can't recognize it. Then windows goes on to "install" drivers however it is still read as "unknown device" I have tried several things including registry booster (but i didnt get all of them fixed) and even reinstalled vista. Any help?

A:Vista doesn't recognize USB devices

Please don't use any registry repair programs. They are as likely to destroy as to repair.
Try deleting(Uninstall) all the USB ports in Device Manager and rebooting.

Hey there Just been given a laptop from someone to see if I can do anything with it Basically when trying to boot into windows it will get as far as the logon screen and from there it just hangs It does however boot into safe mode although problem Vista Windows Dell 1520 it takes a long time to get into it Tried changing startup programs Dell 1520 Windows Vista problem and reinstalling drivers with no luck I then thought of reinstalling windows but I have a few problems Firstly the laptop is Vista home basic I only have the Home Premium CD However the laptop has a recovery partition So I press F when the computer turns on get into the advanced options and select quot Repair your computer quot which after looking around seems to be how to access it Thing is it does nothing No repair screen like others have it just boots up as normal So really I m wondering is there any other way of accessing that or installing windows Thanks nbsp

A:Dell 1520 Windows Vista problem

The "recovery partition" exists, true. However, the recovery discs are still necessary to access it. Beyond that, Dell ships with a password protected, locked BIOS. This is to prevent people that have, "Just been given a laptop from someone to see if I can do anything with it", from doing something with it. This is where the SNAFU erupts. To enlist the help of Dell, you would need a legitimate bill of sale from the prior owner. I suppose you could always ask the person who gave it to you for the recovery discs. The catch 22 here is, they've usually lost the recovery discs, which is why, "they didn't do anything with it".

I am not sure if Black boot-up Windows on Vista screen I posted this in the right place if someone could direct me or if this is the right place ugh I hate being a n b So here is my problem Before I begin I am sorry for signing up and the first thing I do is ask for help I really should give before I get I ll get right to it again sorry There is this whole huge thing about me getting a video card then getting a power supply and it not working and what-not but alas I will not bore you and since I am unsure of the attention span of the people in this forum I would say I have about a paragraph or so before I lose my readers so here I go Since I lost the connection form the video card to the power supply a -pin connector sort of splitting into two -pin connectors that connect to the power supply I ordered one from quot newegg quot and it came today thinking all of my problems would go away I quickly connected it but then I connected the monitor to the video card and booted it up it showed a black screen the monitor was working the light was on the computer was working that yellow light was blinking but there was a black screen So I started to boot up and shut down over and over and moving the connectors from the video card making sure they were all connected and I think I made the problem worse because whenever I connect the -pin to video card and power supply and start it up it doesn t even turn the screen on it blinks the yellow light doesn t turn on I can put the screen to the old place where I used to connect it but then after it says all that fancy information it tells me right after when I have the Black boot-up screen on Windows Vista chance to Black boot-up screen on Windows Vista get into the setup thing quot Disk Boot Failure then something something quot If you could please help me that would be great I know I wasn t really very specific but I tried my best Thank you for reading nbsp

Your power supply might not be sufficient to power your new graphics card whatever it is. Disk boot failure could be a failed hard drive or possibly insufficient power to the hard drive.

Im not sure if this belongs in this forum or the hardware forum so I will try here first I Switching drives hard with Vista recently ran into issues with my PC which after numerous tests and attempts to correct appears to be a motherboard issue - everything else seems to be fine This PC that just crapped out was actually a replacement for another PC Switching hard drives with Vista which Switching hard drives with Vista the HDD went bad on Now my question is on the older PC it was purchased in and came with Windows XP installed on it which was later upgraded to Windows Vista bit before it failed - nothing Switching hard drives with Vista was wrong it upgraded just fine This most recent PC came with Windows Vista -bit and the HDD is in perfect working order - it is now in an external case and all of the information is there just fine So my question is is it possible to simply put this HDD with Vista into the PC that has the bad HDD Would it boot Would it recognize the drive Both HDDs are SATA so there shouldnt be any connection issue I just want to know if its possible to just simply switch bootable hard drives and if so how to do it If this is not possible to just switch the HDDs what needs to be done to make this HDD work in the older PC Thanks in advance nbsp

A:Switching hard drives with Vista

If the connections are the same it will fit into your old case/computer. Your older PC would recognise the new drive no probiems, and essentially there would be no issues with setting it up to work...

However, if the hardware is different, it is likely to have a fit if you try and run it on your older computer. This is because your newer drive has software installed which it depends on to run with your new setup. Unless your old setup is identical in every respect (all of the hardware) then its probably not going to like having to boot up.

You can dual boot XP and Vista but to be honest I don't really see the point in doing it, unless you have very specific reasons for doing so.

If you have the media to restore Vista you could doing the following:

Fit the new drive to the old computer
Insert Vista disc and boot into setup
Do a full clean install of Vista

Firstly, you'd lose any data on the new disk, and secondly doing it this way would mean it customises the install to the configuration of hardware of the older computer.

Hi everyone:

I have a Dell Inspiron 1720 with Vista. Days ago I remember downloading something that made my laptop reboot. Upon rebooting, I still can't get past the bios screen. (Actually I do, but only to a black screen with a blinking cursor.) I've pressed F12 to change the boot order to CD Drive. Ive inserted a vista bootable disk in and heard it spinning and working. Seconds later, I get an error along the lines of, "Not a bootable disk, press X to retry". I've tried the test that is available in the F12 setup, but no errors were detected.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks, Dala

Other than cleaning
You may need to physically remove the keyboard (usually via removing screws underneath laptop)
And disconnect it then reconnect it

You could also test with a USB keyboard, to confirm it's the laptop keyboard only

Hi I ve been looking for a way to get working dual boot no success so far I have Vista installed on my PC no troubles at all booting fine A while ago I installed Fedora on a new externall USB HDD GB Samsung S Installation OK there is a bootsector menu lst as well My BIOS can recognize HDD and I can boot from USB stick But something doesn t work or I am missing something I am no expert just following all the guides I can find on the net so often incomplete or messy I just can not boot from USB HDD I ve tried using EasyBCD and GAG software no luck There must be something specific to booting from USB HDD perhaps Or is it a problem that I have two NTFS partitions on the HDD too no OS though just a storage There s a lot of experts with guides on how to install and dual boot two different OS from one HDD But what about one DualBoot externall OS Vista-Fedora USB (1 on HDD) OS being installed on DualBoot Vista-Fedora (1 OS on externall USB HDD) externall USB HDD nbsp

A:DualBoot Vista-Fedora (1 OS on externall USB HDD)

It works now

In case it might be helpful to somebody, here is what I`ve done to get it work.
It seemed to me that the main problem was in the mbr of the disc. Probably it can be placed just to the first sector of the HDD, so there has to be space available in the very beginning of the disc. Since there was NTFS partition with no OS as the first partition, the external HDD was without mbr being present actually, and thus placing a boot sector anywhere was pointless. There might be a better explanation, I`m just a beginner.
So, I resized and moved the first NTFS partition and made a free space before, so the first became an unallocated space on the HDD. Into that I installed Fedora, configured the /boot to be installed to the very first sector of the HDD, GRUB installed to the mbr in my case (since it`s the first and the only one OS on that HDD), and it works just fine. Now I can boot Fedora two ways without troubles. First when I set up BIOS to boot the external first, it boots straight away. Or I can set up BIOS to boot the internal first, and during BIOS start up press F8 (in my case) to choose where to boot from, select the external from the list and it works now.
All that was not possible before without the mbr being present and installed in the first sector of the HDD.
I don`t want to go into any more details so not to confuse anybody with a bit different environment, it can make a difference possibly. So anybody with a proper technical explanation/details welcome to post it here.

Hi guys,

Just want to find out how to get my computer to register the HDD2 (D: drive). I followed the provided instructions from Toshiba for downgrading to XP from Vista. The sheet said to select any option other than return to out of box state or maintain current partition. So I chose the only other option available.......which was remove the partition or something like that. Now I have 2 hard drives totalling 500Gb, but only one drive registers. What is the best way to sort this out......

Appreciate the help!!!

I have a PC running Vista Home and is connected to my modem via a new netgear wireless router. My x-box gaming machine now connects via the wireless link to the internet ok.However I cannot link the x-box to-the PC to view photos held on the PC.I would like to display them on my tele which is connected to the X-box.
Also is it possible to have a PC hard wired to the wireless router(LAN) whilst running a wireless network for access by I-pod phone and/or x-box ?Am I asking for too much?

A:Vista Home Network

you can always use wired+wireless connections to the same router (limited of course by the number wired slots

many of the routers we use at home have a limit to the number of systems(or devices) attached; typically ten

you need to use the Wireless Network Wizard to get the settings correct for sharing;
be user to choose 'Private' network and not the public. This will tweek your firewall settings
to allow Print/File Sharing. If you're using a 3rd party fw, then
allow tcp in/out ports 138-139,445

I have a 320GB external hard drive from WD which I was using to back up my personal laptop running XP Pro. My laptop has since crashed and I need to access the files on my external while the laptop is being repaired. I have a laptop from work running Vista and the external does not show up in My Computer when I plug it in. I suspect this is because the work laptop's cd drive and my external both have the E drive letter.

My question is this: is there a way to access my files on the work computer without formatting the external and losing all my backed up documents? I am under the impression that giving my hard drive a new letter will require it to be partitioned/formatted?

A:Vista WD External hard drive not showing up, don't want to format

The hd letter shouldn't have anything to do with it normally. But your work computer may be locked down in such a way that it is. But no, you do not have to reformat to get a new drive letter. See if you can get into disk management from the administrative tools control panel, in there you can change drive letters (ie - make the cd drive drive X or something temporarly).

A:Vista USB Safe Remove Problem

Is this LED used to tell you that it's not alright to disconnect? I have one with an LED on it, and it just means it is plugged into the computer. Taking it out after doing a safe remove will not damage it.

It could just be that vista tells USB port to keep supplying power to it even when it has been safe removed. But that is just power, not an actual connection.

The Seagate is in the external enclosure, correct? Did you reset the jumper to master when you put it into the enclosure? How about trying cable select?

Hi I have had numerous problems with my internet which I won't go into. I need a new wireless card to work seamlessly with vista, any suggestions? (the pc it will go on is a desktop pc with a m4a78t-e mobo and will be connecting to a netgear router downstairs.

Thanks bob.

A:Wireless card for a Vista desktop PC?

We install a great number of Wireless cards, and have very few troubles with any of them. Just look for the enhanced ones made by Linksys (Cisco), D-Link, Black ASUS, Netgear, SIIG and Intellinet if you want to be more selective. I would avoid the Rosewill, ATT, GrandTec, and Belkin as too varied in their quality, performance, and long term reliability

I have a home network with an XP 64, and Linux SUSE 11.1 64 bit, hard wired to a Netgear WGR614v7 router connected to Clearwire wireless modem. I've connected to the network with an old laptop with Cisco wifi card. I had minimum problems connecting with the early wifi.

I just bought a new laptop with Vista, soon to be Win 7 I hope. When I try and connect to the network with wifi, I get limited access. I'm running WEP, authentication - automatic, 128 bit, and have typed the same "passphrase" more than once on both the router and in Vista. I'm not familar with WEP, and Vista. The problem seems to be in Vista authenticating the passphrase. If I could clear the network setup in Vista that would be a good start.

I have a Dell Optiplex GX SD When I first purchased the PC it came with (Windows not Vista) OS recognized drive DVD BIOS by neither nor being a CD-ROM drive and Windows XP Professional pre-installed A few months after purchasing the computer I decided to upgrade my CD-ROM to a DVD-RW CD-RW I purchased a brand new DVD-RW CD-RW drive and replaced my CD-ROM with it Everything worked well I was able to play CD s burn movies etc A month later I decided to upgrade my Windows XP with Windows Vista Home Premium I purchased the DVD and installed it with no problems My DVD-RW drive worked fine even after installing Windows DVD drive not being recognized by neither BIOS nor OS (Windows Vista) Vista Then a week or two later I tried playing a CD I opened my DVD-RW CD-RW tray placed the CD inside then closed it Usually when I place a CD into my DVD-RW CD-RW drive and close it a window pops up asking me what I want to do however this time it didn t I went to My Computer and noticed that there was no DVD drive icon under Devices and Removable Storage I tried restarting my computer in hope that it would reappear but it didn t I went to Microsoft s website to try and figure out what was the problem One option was to go to Registry Editor HKEY LOCAL MACHINES SYSTEM CurrentControlSet Class D E -E - CE-BFC - BE and delete both upper filter and lower filter however I was only able to delete upper filter because there was no lower filter I restarted my computer but unfortunately it didn t work So I restarted my computer and went to Setup then to Boot sequence and besides On Board or USB CD-ROM drive it says not present I m assuming that means it s not recognizing my DVD-RW CD-RW drive I shutdown my computer unplugged the power cable and disconnected the DVD drive then I reconnected it and made sure everything was securely connected After plugging the power cable back into the computer I turned on the computer but it still didn t recognize the DVD drive Then I thought to myself quot maybe the drive is dead quot but that couldn t be right because once it s connected to the computer I m able to open and close it Then I decided to uninstall the DVD drive and install my CD-ROM to see if it would recognize it but it didn t I can t think of any other reasons why it wouldn t recognize my DVD drive What should I do Any suggestions nbsp

A:DVD drive not being recognized by neither BIOS nor OS (Windows Vista)

Hi lechevarria89,

Is the drive SATA or IDE? You've established that it is getting power to the driver, but not the information. And since it is not showing in BIOS, but was previously. We start looking at the physical information connector. SATA cables quite often fail, plus make sure the cable isn't bent at a 90 degree angle, with SATA the rule of thumb is "Mess is good!"

Let me know the update

My laptop worked earlier today. Now it's not working for some reason. My fried is in the same room and can log onto the same network but now wen ever I log onto the network, it will get connected but wen I open my browser (which takes forever to open now, started taking forever wen the Internet stopped working) it says page load error on the tool bar on the top of the window and in the screen is says address not found. My network icon I noticed says "unidentified network (Internet 2) access: local only" I looked at my friends and his says all the same things except no "unidentified network". I ran an ipconfig and noticed my "Autoconfiguration IPv4 Address" is a 169 address. I'm retarded with networking but I remember someone telling me a 169 ip is bad. Can u help me out plz?

your right the 169 address is one given to you by windows itself, in other words you arent making a connection to the network your using.

Ever since loading Windows Vista service pack 2, the sound isn't working.

This is on board sound, Asus M2N SLI NVIDIA nForce 560 motherboard.

Speakers work (tried on another computer.)

Control Panel --> Sound --> Properties - indicated everything is working properly.

--> Update drivers - indicates I am using the most updated driver.

C-Media website had nothing and I couldn't find anything on the Asus website.

Could use a little help.

Thanks!

Can anyone help me with my Vista problem I am a bedroom-musician and use Magix Music Maker I build up a song by doing a layer at a time this or Vista, Is else? something Firstly I lay the drum track down Then as the drums playback I put down the Bass Guitar track This is where my problem is When I playback my Drum track and the Bass Guitar track together the Bass Is this Vista, or something else? Guitar is behind time with the drum track The difference is about of a second It happens everytime I record an extra track there is a slight delay I have two laptops both Sony Vaio s My main one is Sony Viao VGN-NR E running Windows Vista Home Premium Service Pack Realtek High Definition Audio It is on this machine that I have the time delay My other Sony Vaio is VGN-N M W running Windows XP Version Service Pack Realtek HD Audio and this one works fine Why should Vista make a difference Is this Vista, or something else? Or is there something else at work here Thank you for reading this post nbsp

A:Is this Vista, or something else?

Hard to track the problem down... devices slow down as they age. Optical drives are built so cheaply that they amaze us, but that manufacturing process is not an exact science. Different chips, power drives, memory chips can all cause reduced or enhanced speeds that would not be noticeable on other formats. Yours presents a test that cannot be adjusted.
This is precisely why they have recording studios. It is an age-old problem.

A:Windows Vista - Is it known for problems?

Your problem seems more to do with malware, as well as the bloatware that usually comes pre-installed with most laptops.

I would recommend reading the stickies in the Virus & Malware Removal forum (indicated by threads that have a blue pin\thumbtack symbol at the end of the name). Click here for a link to the forum.

A:No audio output device is installed with vista

You need to go to either your soundcard manufactuers website, or if you`re using onboard sound, your mobo manufacturers website and see if they have any Vista compatible drivers. If your system is an oem such as Dell/HP etc, then go to your computer manufacturers website and look for Vista compatible drivers.
