Preferred Solution: vista updates- turned sky connection to local only

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/directdownload.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Are the Xp and Xbox still connected to sky?
Are you connected to the sky modem?
I think there may be a possibility your adapter may have given up for a ghost!

A:Vista Local Only connection

Have you tried going through the steps of creating your network connection again?

If not in your control panel go to network and create a new wireless network. Use your router information in the "Enter information for wireless network" page. Click next and see if it connects that way.

Also just a tip, look on the laptop for the radio switch. It is a switch that has a picture of an antenna, if it is off your computer won't connect to the Internet.

For some reason i have had this weird local connection for about 2 weeks and it will not let me get on the internet. Please help! I can provide Ipconfig /all if needed

A:Vista local connection?

I am not sure what you mean by "weird local connection".

When you run ipconfig, do you see the correct default gateway IP address?

Hi Guys I have a few laptops which run Windows and Vista, connection Only Local WEP XP and a few that run Windows Vista If I set my Linksys wireless router to WEP security the Windows XP laptops can connect to the router fine and connect to the internet fine as well The Windows Vista laptops also connect to the router fine but only quot LOCAL ONLY quot instead of Local and Internet in the network and security settings The easy fix is to set my router to WPA security which I have done and now all laptops can connect to the router successfully and with LOCAL AND INTERNET connections available The problem is when I take my laptop to public places such as Starbucks or my friends house or if I use a software on my HTC called Mobile Wifi Router which broadcasts my mobile phone s data connection via the phone s Wifi and only uses a WEP key for encryption and when switching off WEP encryption is not an option e g on my mobile phone or a friend s router When there is a situation where there is a router which I need to connect to and WEP key is used my Vista laptop does not work to connect to the internet it always says quot LOCAL ONLY quot instead of quot LOCAL AND INTERNET quot however my iPod Touch and my XP Laptop and my mobile phone s WiFi have no problem connecting Vista, WEP and Local Only connection to the same routers using WEP key and to the internet Only the Vista machine can connect to the router but does not connect to the internet I have switched of IPv and done some of the hot fixes that I have read Vista, WEP and Local Only connection in this forum on other pages nothing so far has seemed to work to change the connection I have searched the forums to the answer to this there are several things people have suggested including REGEDITS and so on nothing has worked Its a small nuisance but a big one when I am using my laptop away from Home where I am in control of the router settings I m sure there are other people out there with Vista Laptops who also find they can only get LOCAL NETWORK connections when connected to a router using a WEP key If there is a solution I would like to try it I will connect to the router now and send you a IPCONFIG ALL readout for you to see in my next post Cheers David nbsp

A:Vista, WEP and Local Only connection

Here is the IPCONFIG/ALL read out....

I'm trying to connect to the router Dinesh-WiFi.

As I can see... my Vista Laptop's WiFi is not getting the default gateway information and the DNS information from the router whilst it is using WEP encryption....

No problem for the iPod Touch and XP Laptops to connect and get DNS and Gateway info from the same router at the same time.....

so I go to network and security settings... I go to wireless network connection properties...

I enter the IPv4 information and set the IP address, Subnet Mask and Default Gateway info....
192.168.1.111,
255.255.255.0,
192.168.1.1

and I set the Prefered DNS info as well....
192.168.1.1
and still nothing......

the Event log readout says ( i quote):
Result of diagnosis: There may be problem
Issue referred to: RNWF MSM Helper Class

Root cause:
The wireless connection on this computer appears to be working correctly
The Internet connection on the wireless router or access point might not be working correctly.
This is not true... the router is working perfectly fine... XP machines, iPod Touches and iPhones and Mobile Phones with Wifi CAN connect to the routers perfectly fine..... only VISTA machines CAN CONNECT, but cannot get Gateway and DNS info....
and when I set fixed IP addresses and Gateway and DNS info... there is still ONLY LOCAL connection available...
Look forward to seeing if anyone has solved this problem......
Thanks!
David

Hi,
here's problem: Compaq presario c700, wifi connection worked fine for years, did series of MS updates, lost internet connectivity.

card is atheros-

I have another c700 that connects fine, i compared the settings for all network/comms processes-the same

tried:
restore to earlier time
reset all hardware on both ends\restored default settings
tired everything i could find here and other sites.
hardware says it's working-can't ping in either direction.
turned firewall off
ran ipconfig to verify various setting, all looks well.
I'm out of ideas!

A:Vista HP Local connection only AGAIN

Can your wifi detect any signals?
Look at your updates to see if the wifi driver has been updated.

A:local only wireless connection, vista

the 169.254 means it cant see the router

can you post an ipconfig with it connected by cable

I would suspect its a firewall issue ...

is the machine close to the wireless router and getting full signal
it may want a channel change on the router, i have seen it where a few machines connect OK but one does not
use channell 1, 6 or 11

do you have the disks to put norton back on - it may be worth uninstalling and using an installer program from the norton site

you have right cliked on properties and removed ipv6 - correct
and you have removed encryption and mac filtering on the router - correct

Hello,

I just got a notebook running on Vista Home Premium. I now want to copy some files from my PC (running on XP) to my laptop. Could somebody please explain to me in detail how to set up a connection between the two computers? I already bought a network crossover cable for Ethernet. Says something 'bout CAT 5 on the box aswell.
Is there something else I need? I can only connect to the internet with one computer at a time. Hope that's no problem.
Browsing through other threads hasn't quite helped me yet.

thx in advance

Hi,

Recently tried to connect to my router and it would not connect. At first it said it was Limited Access only but now it's saying it's connected but it's not. I checked in the Network and Sharing Centre and it said it wasn't connected.

Don't know why it's suddenly doing this. I'm running vista and my router is a BT Homehub.

Thanks in advance

Milo

Hi guys I hope somebody will be able to shed some light on my situation I ve found countless google results of people experiencing the same problems as me but so far no suggestions have been able to solve my problem weeks ago I bought my Local Laptop: connection Vista only access LAN second Vista laptop my first had Vista for a week before I downgraded to XP I had experienced no problems with neither my wireless nor my wired connection During the week in my accommodation at university I use a wired connection and wireless when I return home at the weekends However this week when I Vista Laptop: Local access only LAN connection returned to university I found that my laptop would connect to the network but only with quot Local only quot access I tried all the usual quick-fixes disabling and renabling the connection rebooting etc but nothing worked each time it would connect only to the local network I figured it was a problem with the network so I grabbed my girlfriend s laptop to check and was surprised to see that her XP laptop did indeed connect to the internet This was hours ago and I have tried pretty much everything I could think of as well as the suggestions from other forums So far I have uninstalled and reinstalled the Ethernet driver Attempted to delete all the preferred networks and start fresh I say attempted because following my next reboot they were all restored Even gone as far as to preform a system restore thinking that maybe an update over the weekend had caused the problem From the sounds of it this problem is pretty common amongst Vista users who have also tested their connections with an XP machine Unfortunately I do not have a Linux distro to test if it the OS fault Hopefully someone has encountered this problem and has been able to deal with it Thanks for any suggestions you find useful Omegamigo nbsp

Hi, did a search for my problem and still did not find an answer for my problem.

My laptop's wireless signal connects fine with the router but can't get on the internet. I tried a several solutions from this site from disabling IPv6 and windows firewall but still there is no connection to internet. One thing that did work was disabling the encryption on the router. I set the security option to None on both the router and the laptop and finally there is connection. I then again tried every single security option on both router and laptop and again there is no connection. (Only local connection). Any suggestions on what I am doing wrong.

Btw, I am on a new router (wndr3700). I had no problems with wired connections and no problems with my old buffalo router.

Thanks in advance.

Hi, I would really appreciate some help with this! getting frustrated now...

I can only connect to the internet via an unsecured network. I have tried two different secured networks and in both cases I can connect to local only but not to the internet. I have tried re-starting the routers, nothing. I have deleted the network connections, turned everything off, rebooted and reinstalled, no joy. I have uninstalled all AV and firewall software, and restored Windows Default firewall settings, no luck. I am at a loss to understand how it can work fine with an unsecured network but not with a secure network. I have posted my machine's spec below. Any help gratefully received

If using wifi, try Ethernet connection.

You're running Vista SP1 and need to install all outstanding Windows Updates, including Vista SP2.

SP2 Prepwork - http://jcgriff2.com/0x1/Vista_SP_Prepwork.html

The first order of business - remove the Internet Security app using the manufacturer's removal tool.

Hi, I'm new here.
I am using a Belkin USB to connect to my router that is in the basement. Oddly, I get frequent LIMITED OR NO CONNECTION. I also get Internet: LOCAL ONLY or even no connection available. I try to repair the connection but it doesn't work. The fix is is to restart my PC which will make the internet connection work again.

Its very annoying to lose a connection and then having to restart. Can anyone help me find what the problem is?

I have come to this forum as I have just solved a problem on my windows vista from help I received from various other forums and I wanted to return the favour. I inherited an older computer with windows vista and could only get a local connection, so although I was successfully connected to my router I couldn't get online. After hours of hassle I realised that the Norton ( out of date) was the block. I had a job to uninstall it. The uninstall tool failed (copied from my own computer on a stick) and I had to go into the registry and laboriously remove every reference to Synmantec. You can get advice online how to do that. It's long winded but easy. After I manually deleted all the "stuck" Symantec files the uninstall tool worked and I reinstalled a current version of Norton. Hey Presto.

Ok so this is my first post and yes I've already done a search I know lots of people have had problems on Vista with 'local internet. strikes 64 but Wireless no only' connection again! Vista having 'Local Only' access on their PC and I'm one of them After doing a search and reading some threads I dont think anyone has had exactly the same problem as me so I thought I'd seek out some advice So I have Vista Home Premium bit running It's a new PC fresh install etc After trying unsuccessfully with a number of USB wireless adapters once I installed drivers the adapter would never be recognised I finally found an internal PCI wireless adapter that is Wireless connection 'local only' but no internet. Vista 64 strikes again! recognised by Vista and connects to the internet I'm using the ASUS WL- G V card The internet has had dodgy Wireless connection 'local only' but no internet. Vista 64 strikes again! performance at best up until now but something was better than nothing Last week however I turned my PC on only to see that my wireless network is not connecting I tried connecting manually but nothing I have to leave the computer on for half an hour before it even aknowledges my home network exists Then my PC automatically connects to the router local only but doesn't connect to the internet itself Occasionally VERY RARELY I am able to access the internet but more often than not I am 'local only' All my hardware is up to date all drivers are the most current and yet I'm still stuffed Unless you guys can help I'm going to have to pay for Wireless connection 'local only' but no internet. Vista 64 strikes again! an electrician to put a phone outlet in my room so that I can have the router on MY pc and the rest of the house will be wireless instead Of course that then raises the issue of finding a Vista compatible ADSL wireless router Sigh After spending so much on a new pc and going to the trouble of building it all myself I'm rather annoyed I'm having to use my old box which I've set up in the kitchen in order to do my work on the net Any help would be greatly appreciated

Hi Guys Really starting to get frustrated with this issue Own a dell with Vista home edition wireless dlink network adapter card installed Last year after i moved in to my new apartment complex tried connecting to the network and intitially wireless signal was weak so i tried ethernet cat connection and it would not allow me to get on Local Access only My connection ethernet Local Home Access Vista computer was communicating with the router but i could not get internet access beyond that Then several weeks later i disabled my wireless adapter and Vista Home Local Access ethernet connection magically my ethernet connection appeared and was uninterrupted for over months But last weekend my landlord switched routers from his old d-link to a new cisco router and again i ve had issues with local access only connection but this time its affecting my wireless connection as well My wireless is intermittent it will connect upon startup for about minutes to hours of internet connection with a weak signal then timeout and automically try to connect to a nearby hotspot unsecured network which i dont want it to do I have to disable and re-enable the wireless network connection to get another hour or so of intermittent internet service but my cat connection still will not work it identifies the network but it wont actually connect to the internet and still says Local access only I ve tried installing all my recent service pack updates disabling all non-essential startup service resetting routers cleaning up registry Could it be a faulty ethernet cable or bad port maybe compatability issues I have not tried any system restore actions yet but im close to it I don t know much about network settings so any feedback would be appreciated as to what i can do and check I hate vista always screws with the network never had problems like this in the past on other OS I just dont understand why it worked for so many months suddenly and then back to the same old local access problem Is my landlord s network setup a possibility too I seem to be the only person in the apartment complex that has this issue Could it be IP issues with just my computer PLEASE HELP ME -Oskar nbsp

A:Vista Home Local Access ethernet connection

It's impossible to sort through that amorphous blob of text, a little formatting would be very useful. With what I see, the information we'll really need isn't there anyway.

Please supply the following info, exact make and models of the equipment please.

Name of your ISP (Internet Service Provider).
Make and exact model of the broadband modem.
Make and exact model and hardware version of the router (if a separate unit).
Make and exact model and hardware version of any other network equipment, like a repeater, a booster, hi-gain antenna, etc.
Model numbers can usually be obtained from the label on the device.
Connection type, wired or wireless.
If wireless, encryption used, (none, WEP, WPA, or WPA2)
Version and patch level of Windows on all affected machines, i.e. XP (Home or Pro), SP1-SP2-SP3, Vista (Home, Business, Ultimate), etc.
The Internet Browser in use, IE, Firefox, Opera, etc.

Please give an exact description of your problem symptoms, including the exact text of any error messages.

If you're using a wireless connection, have you tried a direct connection with a cable to see if that changes the symptoms?
For wireless issues, have you disabled all encryption on the router to see if you can connect that way?
Have you connected directly to the broadband modem to see if this is a router or modem/ISP issue?
If there are other computers on the same network, are they experiencing the same issue, or do they function normally?

On any affected computer, I'd also like to see this:

Hold the Windows key and press R, then type CMD (COMMAND for W98/WME) to open a command prompt:

Type the following commands on separate lines, following each one with the Enter key:

PING 206.190.60.37

PING yahoo.com

NBTSTAT -n

IPCONFIG /ALL

Right click in the command window and choose Select All, then hit Enter.
Paste the results in a message here.

If you are on a machine with no network connection, use a floppy, USB disk, or a CD-RW disk to transfer a text file with the information to allow pasting it here.

Hi. . .

Boot into SAFEMODE w/Networking by tapping the F8 key during boot-up. Try your IE connection there.

My guess at this time is that your problem relates to a firewall or anti-virus issue.

What anti-virus and 3rd party firewall are you running?

Hi there guys, simple case:

In control panel I've disabled all updates, yet from time to time I get a message that windows will install the updates upon shutdown. I go back to control panel and updates are magically turned on. I turn them off again, I click apply, close the window, open it again to doublecheck if they are off ( they are) and go on doing some other things. And then after some time they are turned on again.

Initially I thought it was some kind of virus, I had to format my PC anyway so I did and it's all the sime. I've scanned for all malware/viruses etc, yet I SIMPLY CANT TURN THE UPDATES OFF .

Any solutions?

A:Updates installing even though turned off

something you have installed is doing it. the most common culprits are virus scanners, they overide it as they require windows to be fully up to date to be fully effective.
but it could be anything.

this is one of those things people over look when they just click the "ive read and understand the terms of use" tick box. its normally stated in there lol

I keep getting a message from Windows Security Center that "Automatic Uptates are Turned Off", when I click on the button to turn on automatic updates, I get a message that Security Center is unable to turn on automatic updates. Then, when I go into Control Panel, I see that automatic updates are turned ON. Is this a fake message generated by a virus? I tried to download Microsoft Automatic Updater, and received error message 0x80070424, which is not listed in their list of error messages under the help topics.

Earlier today, I received an error message stating that the automatic updates on my computer had been turned off. Shortly thereafter, I received another message from AVG, telling me that my computer had become infected by a malware file called UXQ.exe. I immediately emptied my Temporary Internet Files, then started a scan with AVG (which turned up empty) before running a sweep with rKill, which produced no results. I was in the middle of a sweep with MalwareBytes when I received a blue screen and was forced to reboot my computer. Afterwards, my computer functioned as normal, but the automatic updates appear to still be off. What is wrong and what can I do to turn them back on?

A:Automatic Updates Turned Off

Nevermind. Running Dial-A-Fix fixed the problem.

How do I go about checking those All I know so far is checkdisk

A:PC got turned off while it was installing updates.

Hello twinklebat

It sounds as if you have been very lucky if the machine booted up and seems to be running well

Make sure all your important files are backed up.
Try a reboot and if that goes normally I would say the system is fine.

You need to get the rest of the Updates again though.

Ever since I picked up some trojan called Vundo.U, I've been trying to clean my PC from all malicious software. I scanned the whole computer with AVG, Ad-Aware and S&D and cleaned everything they found.

Everything would be fine except in my tray it says automatic updates are turned off.
When I go in the security center and try tu turn them on it says that it can't and that I should turn them on manually.

Then I went to control panel, System, Automatic updates tab and there it says that the updates ARE turned on.

I'm using Windows XP.

P.S. I ran HijackThis and posted the log on their website (http://hijackthis.de/en) and it says that everything checks out.

I've been reading that some versions of Windows will not offer the option to delay or turn off Updates You can schedule when the updates install so I guess that is a way to delay Microsoft will do this using three types of service branches for Windows Service Branch Options Edition Current Branch Security Updates 10 off can't be Updates turned Windows Features and Fixes are automatically applied There is no option to delay or customize these updates Windows Home Current Branch for Business CBB CBB includes Windows 10 Updates can't be turned off the requirements of the Current Branch but also provides the option of customizing when and which Security Updates Features and Fixes are applied similar to how Windows Update works today in current versions of Windows Updates cannot be deferred indefinitely Windows Updates can be managed using enterprise management tools such as Windows Update for Business and WSUS Windows ProWindows EnterpriseWindows Education Long Term Servicing Branch LTSB Only available to volume license customers running Windows Enterprise Flexible options for managing Windows Updates Windows Updates can be customized to only accept Security Fixes Windows Updates can be managed using enterprise management tools such as Windows Update for Business and WSUS Windows Enterprise Windows and windows updates - Microsoft Community

For most of us, there will be no option. From your own post -
There is no option to delay or customize these updates.

A:Automatic Updates Gets turned off

Hi musthafa

Please read this post completely before begining the fix. If there's anything that you do not understand, kindly ask your questions before proceeding. Please ensure that there aren't any opened browsers when you are carrying out the procedures below. Save the following instructions in Notepad as this webpage would not be available when you're carrying out the fix.

We also suggest that you Subscribe to this thread to be notified of fixes as soon as they are posted by our Team. You can do this simply by clicking the "Thread Tools" button located in the original thread line and selecting "Subscribe to this Thread".

IT IS IMPORTANT THAT YOU DON'T MISS A STEP & PERFORM EVERYTHING IN THE RIGHT ORDER.

=================

We will begin with ComboFix.exe. Please visit this webpage for download links, and instructions for running the tool:

http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/comb...o-use-combofix

Please ensure you read this guide carefully and install the Recovery Console first.

The Windows Recovery Console will allow you to boot up into a special recovery (repair) mode. This allows us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware. It is a simple procedure that will only take a few moments of your time.

Once installed, you should see a blue screen prompt that says:

The Recovery Console was successfully installed.

Please continue as follows:Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.
Click Yes to allow ComboFix to continue scanning for malware.
When the tool is finished, it will produce a report for you.

Please include the following reports for further review, and so we may continue cleansing the system:

C:\ComboFix.txt

I followed the instructions to run Rkill and then MBAM and appear to have successfully removed the Internet Security 2011 malware. It was easy and I was very impressed at how good the Guide was. I have one small hangover from the infection--Automatic Updates from the Windows Security panel is off and I can't turn it on either from the Security section or directly from the Control Panel access. Any ideas? Is this something MBAM did by accident? I never changed a setting in either Rkill or MBAM. Thanks a lot.

Hello,Please follow the instructions in ==>This Guide<==. If you cannot complete a step, skip it and continue.Once the proper logs are created, then make a NEW TOPIC and post it ==>HERE<== Please include a description of your computer issues and what you have done to resolve them.If you can produce at least some of the logs, then please create the new topic and explain what happens when you try to create the log(s) that you couldn't get. If you cannot produce any of the logs, then still post the topic and explain that you followed the Prep. Guide, were unable to create the logs, and describe what happens when you try to create the logs.Orange Blossom

A friend?s XP-SP3 PC became infected with XP Antivirus 2011. This morning I ran MalwareBytes in Safe mode & deleted all malware. After reboot I ran a thorough scan using Malwarebytes, MS Malicious Software Removal Tool. All scans now show a clean system, including MS Security Essentials.

However, I noticed that XP Security Center indicated that Automatic Updates is not turned on. After trying a few times through the Automatic Updates in Control Panel I was never able to get Automatic Updates enabled.

Will going back to a prior Restore Point correct this or is there a more appropriate fix?
Thank you for any assistance.

Hi,I understand that you need help in order to get rid of the malware that is present on your system - But you need to help us first..I notice that you never scanned with an Antivirus previously before starting this thread - because you don't even have an Antivirus installed! This is somewhat suicidal in today's digital world. That's why I want you to install one first!!* Please install Avira Antivirus: http://www.free-av.com/This is a free Antivirus.Perform a full scan with Avira and let it delete everything it is finding. Then reboot. After reboot, open your Avira and select "reports".There doubleclick the report from the Full scan you have done. Click the "Report File" button and copy and paste this report in your next reply together with a new HijackThislog. Then we'll start from there, because it really makes no sense otherwise that we clean this up manually if an Antivirusscan is not present which should be able to deal with most and prevent further reinfection.

Try this free program...Dial-a-fix...It should restore automatic updates. Usually these types of problems are caused by malware. Have you ran any scans for malware?http://djlizard.net/dial-a-fix/

Hey, this is my first time posting, and I don't know where else to turn. I've ran multiple malware and spyware programs, none of which have allowed automatic updates to resume.

I booted in safemode, turned turned off system restore, then ran malwarebytes, superantispyware, adaware, CCcleaner, norman malware, and Symantic Corporate, and even after this, I cannot turn updates back on. The computer hasn't slowed or exhibited any other problems, but this is bothering me and I suspect it is a harbinger of future problems.

I'm running XP media edition with service pack three. I've attached my Hijack this logfile; please help!

I had some malware tonight that my antivirus program caught and quarantined. Since then though I'm getting a message that says my automatic updates is truned off. I've tried to turn it back on, and even tried it in safe mode but it won't turn back on.

Can someone please tell me how to do it? I've tried by going into system in the control panel and selecting Automatic Updates and selected the turn on automatic updates option. Still, it's not working.

Any help would be appreciated.

Thank you,

bellisimo

What are the instances that windows update runs even if the automatic updates are turned off?

I turned my windows update off because it causes BSOD in my laptop. I only see that windows tried updating when I take a look at the system restore points. However, it cannot be seen when I open the installed updates in the control panel.........

A:Automatic update turned off but still windows updates...

Sounds like the update is sent out, goes to your machine and is then rejected, because your update is turned off. If you do not have the updates in your machine, I cannot say that there is a problem.

Windows Security Center says that Automatic Updates is turned off. When I click on the button to "Turn on Automatic Updates", a dialog box pops up that says it can't ("We're sorry. The Security Center could not change your Automatic Update settings..." It then instructs me to go to the control panel, System tab, and to turn them on myself. When I do that, that window says that Automatic Update ARE turned on (the Automatic (Recommended) radio button is selected).

I would assume that this is all happening as an after effect of having just been hit with the XP Total Security 2011 trojan. As far as I can tell, I have successfully gotten rid of that trojan, thanks to the fine help and instructions I found here at BP.

But whatever the cause, I now have this problem.

Ideas, anyone?

XPS 8700, Windows 7, using an Ethernet cable.
The Internet Access icon (in the system tray) will display a red X, then the icon will show spinning, then the icon will appear normal. It takes about 10-seconds for the entire process to occur.
During this time, connectivity to the Internet is lost. I'm using an Ethernet cable to connect.
Typically, it occurs when I'm asking for lots of data rapidly (e.g., flipping through online photos quickly or streaming a large video).
It always fixes itself. But, it's disruptive to my surfing... and annoying.
How might I fix this? Thanks.

I have a Windows 7 Home Premium computer that is not connected to the internet. I have checked the drivers and they are all installed correctly and operational. When I go into the adapter settings there is no Local Area Connection adapter. I have included some screen shots of what I am seeing if they help.

A:Local Area Connection missing from network adapters, no connection

Welcome to the Seven Forums.

In that computer management window (while Device Manager is selected in the left pane), select View from the menu bar. Then uncheck View hidden devices. Do you see any Network adapters now?

Every time I reboot the computer, the action center tells me to turn the automatic updates on. I do that, and it turns off again. I've run malwarebyes and my virus scan and cleaned up anything it found, but that doesn't make any difference. I've also run the scannow, and it's not found any problems.

Any suggestions on what I can do to fix this? I don't want to turn the notification off.

Thanks!

A:Install updates automatically gets turned off every time I reboot

What other software is installed? this sound to me like you have a system 'optimiser' running at boot, such as Advanced System Care, or any Wise product.
All such product should be used with extreme caution - or preferably uninstalled completely.

Did that happen whilst you were trying to install SP2? If not, I would just let it go. The updates will probably come back automatically.

I have recently been infected with XP Total Security 2011.

I have tried to remove it by following the Remove XP Anti-Spyware 2011, Vista Security 2011, and Win 7 Internet Security 2011 (Uninstall Guide) Posted by Grinler

I have run RKill and Malwarebytes Anti-Malware, which found and successfully removed Trojan.BHO & Trojan.FakeAlert.

I have also run SUPERAntiSpyware, this found and removed Trojan.Agent/Gen-IEFake, Trojan.Agent/Gen-IExplorer[Fake] & Trojan.Agent/Gen-PEC.

When I have rescanned the computer after removing the above infections, Malwarebytes Anti-Malware finds no infections but SUPERAntiSpyware keeps finding and removing the same Trojans.

Automatic updates have been disabled and I am unable to turn it back on.

Help removing this infection, would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Tim

HELP! While shutting down the computer, there was an option to install windows updates before shutting down and i clicked it. i switched off my monitor to let it install and shut down itself but my dad unplgged the monitor for some reason and i turned off the power accidently forgetting that the updates were being installed!

Now when i switch on the computer, it takes me to the startup options page and no matter which option i select, it ends up in a blue screen saying that a driver is attempting to write on a read-only memory. The updates may be installed incompletely so is there a way to delete the updates? HELP.

A:Accidently turned off power while installing windows updates.

Hi MrAtiF and welcome to Vista Forums

The reason why you are having problems is because some updates overwrite and patch system files. When this happens, you need to take particular heed about the warning not to turn off your machine whilst the updates are configured/installed. Should power be removed, then some of these files will be incomplete and in an uncertain state.

Have a look at this Tutorial: Advanced Boot Options

Try Last Known Good Configuration (advanced). If that doesn't work, try these options in order:
System Restore - How to
Startup Repair
Repair Install For Vista

If none of these work, or you can't even access them, then you might need to do a clean installation:
Clean Install From Upgrade Vista
Clean Install with a Full Version of Vista

Ok so I've looked around this forum and other forums for how to get back the Local area connection and i get stuck. In the Network Connections, I only have "1394 Net Adapter" and no Local Area Connection. What's going on. They say make sure in the device manager it is not disabled. But I only have the 1394 Net Adapter driver in the Network Adapters. Where is my local area connections driver ? Its not there !

I have a clear modem (CPEi 25150) and a D-Link wireless router (DIR-601) and they are connected and set up. It all worked fine before I reset my PC back to factory settings and wiped out everything, but now this happens and I can't get on the Internet. Help ?

A:Local Area Connection missing and no Internet Connection.

Hello,

Have you tried going to "Add hardware" in control panel?

Start -> Control Panel -> Add Hardware -> Click next, and it should detect the network adapter is connected to your computer but hasn't been installed and it should install it for you.

Post back here with results aswell

I was just wondering what the 1394 Connection icon was next to my Local Area Connection 2 icon in the Network Connections folder on Windows XP. Could I somehow connect thru that? Also it is enable and says I am connected however there is 0 packets being sent and received? Should I disable this or does it matter?

A:What is the 1394 Connection icon next to my Local Area Connection 2?

You can disable it if you want. This is for your Firewire port on your PC/Laptop you can use this to interconnect between 2 firewire controllers that support this function. Its just another form of computer connecting like Ethernet, and wireless. and USB. and COM port.

I have used boot amp nuke to wipe clean an older XP desktop Then I used the XP installation disk to get going to the basic installation that enables the computer to function The plan is to get the network card working and then use updates and auto-detect to configure the remaining drivers I have done this with some success on a couple of other older XP machines previously I opened the case and worked out that the board is an Intel D PERL By going to the Intel website on another machine I have downloaded the network card drivers copied it to a USB stick and then transferred the drivers to the machine being re-built They all appear to have installed correctly - when I go to device manager it says that the quot Intel R PRO CT Network Connection quot is working properly When I go to Network Connections it says that the Local Area Connection is enabled But in the details pane it reports the following IP Address Subnet Mask Assigned by DHCP I have cross referenced the network configuration against another but address and IP Local enabled Area connection no no Connection XP machine and confirmed that the TCP IP properties are configured to obtain IP address automatically etc ipconfig all in the command prompt reports the following Windows IP Configuration Host Name stratus Primary Dns Suffix Node Type Broadcast IP Routing Enabled No WINS Proxy Enabled No Ethernet adapter Local Area Connection Connection-specific DNS Suffix Description Intel R PRO CT Network Connection Physical Address - C-F - - B- Dhcp Enabled Yes Autoconfiguration Enabled Yes IP Address Subnet Mask Default Gateway DHCP Server Clearly I cannot get any connection to the internet I do not believe I would need to do any configuration of the home network itself because Local Area Connection enabled but no IP address and no connection it is Local Area Connection enabled but no IP address and no connection configured to be as vanilla Local Area Connection enabled but no IP address and no connection as possible too And the other computers connect to it fine Is there a step I am missing Have I installed the drivers incorrectly Any assistance much appreciated nbsp

A:Local Area Connection enabled but no IP address and no connection

IP addresses of all zeros are normally caused by one of the following.

Diagnosis:
DHCP Service not running.
Duplicate IP address on the network.
Bad NIC card drivers.
Defective NIC hardware.

Resolution:
Check Control Panel, Administrative Tools, Services. The DHCP Client service should be Started and its Startup Type should be Automatic.

Turn off ALL of the computers and other network connected devices, restart (power cycle) the router, then restart all the computers and other network devices.

Check for upgraded drivers and/or reload the Network drivers.

Replace the Network Interface Card.

A:Firewall, Automatic Updates, Virus Protection Turned Off For About 0.2 Seconds

firstly why are you using windows firewall? it isnt very good i would recommend you get something like ZoneAlram (free edition is avaiavlable)ZoneAlarm free (Firewall)http://www.zonealarm.com/store/content/cat...=GB&lang=enwhat you need to do is under each catergory eg firewall, there should be link that says "Show Me Other Options" under that you should then select "I have a firewall/Antiviurs/Spyware remove that i manage myself"this *should* resolve it, disconnect off your internet, turn off all protection from your system tray, then in security centre disable and re-enable all your security and restart the computer)let us know if this works.

Hello happyR1girl and welcome to BC forums,Step 11. Go >> Here << and download ERUNT (ERUNT (Emergency Recovery Utility NT) is a free program that allows you to keep a complete backup of your registry and restore it when needed.)2. Install ERUNT by following the prompts (use the default install settings but say no to the portion that asks you to add ERUNT to the start-up folder, if you like you can enable this option later)3. Start ERUNT (either by double clicking on the desktop icon or choosing to start the program at the end of the setup)4. Choose a location for the backup (the default location is C:\WINDOWS\ERDNT which is acceptable).5. Make sure that at least the first two check boxes are ticked 6. Press OK7. Press YES to create the folder.Step 2Set Windows to show all files and all folders. On your Desktop, double click My Computer, from the menu options, select tools, then Folder Options, and then select VIEW Tab and look at all of settings listed. "CHECK" (turn on) Display the contents of system folders. Under column, Hidden files and folders----choose ( *select* ) Show hidden files and folders. Next, un-check Hide extensions for known file types. Next un-check Hide protected operating system files. Step 3Download and save the attached file to your Desktop. Next, right-click on the file & select RENAME. Change the .txt to .VBS.Then double-click on it to start. This will produce a windows update history report in Notepad. Save it to your Desktop or a folder that you can remember. When completed, ZIP the UpdateHistory.txt file and then attach in your next reply. Also if you would, get me the URL link to your post in MS Answers (or your handle on that board).

Hi,

Please visit this webpage for download links, and instructions for running combofix:

Note: After downloading, make sure you rename combofix.exe to combo-fix.exe

In ?Windows Update? I have selected the recommended option of ?install updates automatically? and left the timing at the default of ?Every day at 3:AM.? I typically shut down my computer every night, so it is not running at 3AM. After my computer is turned on will I still get the Windows Update downloads? Will they install automatically at some point?
I am running Vista Home Premium 64bit on a Dell XPS 435MT.

A:Must computer be turned on at scheduled time for Windows Update to download updates?

Yes your computer needs to be turned on. If it's not, and you don't update manually, it will simply wait until you are powered on at 3am. And, if you are never powered on at 3am, you will never update.

I run the wireless and network setup wizards on Windows XP. Before I started this, I did not
see that the 1394 connection was connected. Now it is. Network also shows "Local Area Connection" VIA Rhine II Fast Ethernet Adapter, connected. Which one should I be using with my wireless router? Should I disable 1394? Will 1394 cause a conflict with internet connection?

A:Local Area Connection or 1394 connection?

The IEEE-1394 connection always indicates it's connected. just an oddity of Windows. Ignore that adapter, since it has nothing to do with your Ethernet connection.

I have tired to get rid of this bridge connection that is on my local area connection. I try to remove it with the bridge connection area and all it says is "To create a Network Bridge, you must select at least two LAN or High-Speed Internet connections that are not being used by Internet Connection Sharing." I have AT&T hig speed internet and tired talking to them and they said it was on my end, plus I spend two hours on the phone to someone who doesn't know much english and not alot about computers. So can someone please help me. The only way I can connect to the internet is through the my D-Link router which sucks. Someone please help me.

Hello, it appears we got split up somehow.. If that ever happens please send me a PM (personal message).MBam should remove these .. Can you update and run Mbam yet? Run these 2 killers first.FixExe.regFixExe.reg ....click Run when the box opensRKill....Please download Rkill by Grinler and save it to your desktop.Link 2Link 3Link 4Double-click on the Rkill desktop icon to run the tool.If using Vista, right-click on it and Run As Administrator.A black DOS box will briefly flash and then disappear. This is normal and indicates the tool ran successfully. If not, delete the file, then download and use the one provided in Link 2.If it does not work, repeat the process and attempt to use one of the remaining links until the tool runs.If the tool does not run from any of the links provided, please let me know.If the computer is rebooted or a reboot occurs along the way you will need to run the application again as the malware programs will start again.Rerun MBAM (MalwareBytes) like this:Open MBAM in normal mode and click Update tab, select Check for Updates, when doneclick Scanner tab, select Quick scan and scan (normal mode). After scan click Remove Selected, Post new scan log and Reboot into normal mode.

Hello can we get a scan log and then go from there...Next run MBAM (MalwareBytes):Please download Malwarebytes Anti-Malware (v1.44) and save it to your desktop.Download Link 1Download Link 2MBAM may "make changes to your registry" as part of its disinfection routine. If using other security programs that detect registry changes (ie Spybot's Teatimer), they may interfere or alert you. Temporarily disable such programs or permit them to allow the changes.Make sure you are connected to the Internet.Double-click on mbam-setup.exe to install the application.
For instructions with screenshots, please refer to the How to use Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware Guide. When the installation begins, follow the prompts and do not make any changes to default settings. When installation has finished, make sure you leave both of these checked:Update Malwarebytes' Anti-MalwareLaunch Malwarebytes' Anti-MalwareThen click Finish.MBAM will automatically start and you will be asked to update the program before performing a scan.If an update is found, the program will automatically update itself. Press the OK button to close that box and continue. If you encounter any problems while downloading the definition updates, manually download them from here and just double-click on mbam-rules.exe to install. On the Scanner tab:Make sure the "Perform Quick Scan" option is selected. Then click on the Scan button. If asked to select the drives to scan, leave all the drives selected and click on the Start Scan button. The scan will begin and "Scan in progress" will show at the top. It may take some time to complete so please be patient. When the scan is finished, a message box will say "The scan completed successfully. Click 'Show Results' to display all objects found".Click OK to close the message box and continue with the removal process.Back at the main Scanner screen:Click on the Show Results button to see a list of any malware that was found.Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected. When removal is completed, a log report will open in Notepad. The log is automatically saved and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.Copy and paste the contents of that report in your next reply. Be sure to post the complete log to include the top portion which shows MBAM's database version and your operating system.Exit MBAM when done.Note: If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be asked to reboot your computer so MBAM can proceed with the disinfection process. If asked to restart the computer, please do so immediately. Failure to reboot normally (not into safe mode) will prevent MBAM from removing all the malware.

I see you have P2P software ( Ares and BitComet ) installed on your machine. We are not here to pass judgment on file-sharing as a concept. However, we will warn you that engaging in this activity and having this kind of software installed on your machine will always make you more susceptible to re-infections. It may be contributing to your current situation. This page will give you further information.

Please note: Even if you are using a "safe" P2P program, it is only the program that is safe. You will be sharing files from uncertified sources, and these are often infected. The bad guys use P2P filesharing as a major conduit to spread their wares.

References for the risk of these programs are here, here, and here.

I would strongly recommend that you uninstall them, however that choice is up to you. If you choose to remove these programs, you can do so via Control Panel >> Add or Remove Programs.

If you decide to uninstall Ares and BitComet, also delete these Folders if they still exist:

C:\Program Files\Ares
C:\Program Files\BitComet
C:\Documents and Settings\Hossam Nasser\Application Data\Ares
C:\Documents and Settings\Hossam Nasser\Application Data\BitComet
