Accessing The Pop Settings

Q: Accessing The Pop Settings

I am having a difficult time getting into a specific email account so I can change the server settings. I added a new hotmail account to my live mail program and allowed the program to automatically set the pop info. But when I try to send a message it doesn't recognize the setting (553). But I'll be darned if I can find out how to get to that account's server info page. And what should those server settings be? Please give specific instructions? I'm running Windows Vista Home Premium.

Kind Regards,

Steve

Preferred Solution: Accessing The Pop Settings

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/directdownload.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I am having trouble accessing the router settings of my linksys router. I want to update the firmware. I entered the default gateway that I found using the ipconfig command. It will not work though. I keeps displaying a 404 error. Could it be that I am using the guest network? Any suggestions?

A:Accessing Router Settings?

whats the exact model of the router ?
also post back here an ipconfig /all and an xirrus screen shot
and tell us what network you connect to and also the IP used

to access the settings of a router and make changes - certainly for firmware - make sure you are connected to the router with a cable and that the PC you use if a laptop is also plugged into the mains - any powerfail during the process will damage the router and may not be recovered

------------------------------------------------------------------------
ipconfig /all
If you cannot access the internet with this PC, then you will need to paste the results into something like notepad and then copy onto a machine that can access the internet and post the results in a reply here.
Save the file to a USB flash drive or other removable media. Plug it into the working computer with internet access and copy the file and paste here.

We would like to see the results from an ipconfig /all - post back the results in a reply here.

Hold the Windows key and press R, then type CMD then press Enter to open a command prompt box
(A new dialogue box - black with white font, will appear on screen ):

In the command prompt window that opens, type the following command:

Note that there is a space before the /ALL, but there is NOT a space after the / in the following command.

ipconfig /all > network.txt & network.txt

It will export the results into notepad and then automatically open the notepad and display on your screen.

Now all you need to do is copy and paste those results into a reply here
to do that:
From the notepad menu - choose Edit - Select all
all the text will now be highlighted
Next
From the notepad menu - choose Edit - Copy

Now go back to the forum - goto the reply and then right click in the reply box and paste the results.
The results from the notepad should now appear in the forum reply.
------------------------------------------------------------------------

------------------------------------------------------------------------
Run Xirrus Wi-Fi Inspector
Download and install
If you cannot access the internet with this PC, then you will need to copy the program across to the faulty PC
Save the file to a USB flash drive or other removable media. Plug it into the working computer with internet access and copy the file and install the program.
You will now need to take a screen shot and copy that back to the working PC and attach the screen shot in a reply on the forum here.

http://www.xirrus.com/Products/Wi-Fi-Inspector.aspx
Direct link to the program is here http://info.xirrus.com/Wi-FiInspectorConfirmation.html

{If the above link does not work heres another link http://www.pcworld.com/downloads/file_download/fid,77196-order,4/download.html}

Then run and install the program - on a wireless enabled PC/Laptop
if you get an error - You need will need to have NET Framework installed for the WiFi Inspector to function.

Run the program

A user guide is available here http://www.xirrus.com/cdn/pdf/Xirrus-Wi-Fi-inspectorguide-1-2-1-RevB-6.aspx

post a screen shot of the program running.
if there are a lot of networks showing can you click on "networks" top lefthand area - so we can see all the network information.

post which SSID name is yours, its located in the list, under network "Adapter Name" (1st column)

To post a screen shot of the active window.
1) hold the Alt key and press the PrtScn key. Open the Windows PAINT application (Start> All Programs> Accessories> Paint) and Paste the screen shot. You can then use PAINT to trim to suit, and save it as a JPG format file.
OR
2) if you are using Vista/Windows 7 you can use the "snipping tool" which is found in Start> All programs> Accessories> Snipping Tool

I had a corrupted installation of XP Home. I added a 2nd hdd which is now the master and my original disk is the slave.

Windows explorer sees the 2nd ( original) HDD perfectly.

When I try and access my Docs and Settings from the original install which were held on a Passworded Administrator account, I get an access denied error. I have set up an identical account on the new installation of XP Home.

Any Thoughts how I can get to my original documents?

I recently replaced my motherboard which because my new one is a different chipset than my old one, required me to repair my windows install. Rather than do that and possibly lose a bunch of stuff in My Documents folder and my extensive Favorites I opted to just do a new install on another partition. So far everything has worked fine but when I tried to get into my old Admin files in my "Documents & Settings" Folder it gave me a red x and said Access Denied.

Anyone know how I get around this and into this folder?

It`s always worth running anti virus scan to start with if you get something like that happening but you should be able to get to page file (or virtual memory) faily easily using the Win key + Pause-Break, then Advanced / Performace / Advanced.

I know there are various options of what to set the page file at but I`ve never had a problem setting it to `System Managed`.

Hello everyone,
I have a newer Macbook 2GHz with theMac OS X Version 10.4.11. I'm living in Japan and I purchased an xbox 360 with the wireless lan adapter. I have an the Japanese ADSLModemMS5 produced by NTT. I also have the mac wireless router which leaves me with no extra ethernet ports.

My real problem is that I can't get the XBox360 to be functional online. It says it connects but then the tests stop at the IP portion. The solutions microsoft offers are: mainly just changing your settings to DHCP enabled. I can't find an easy way to change that through my network settings.

On the other hand, my Nintendo Wii works wirelessly with the same modem and router, so I think DHCP should already be enabled as it usually is. Can anybody help me get this thing online?

A:Accessing my DHCP settings wirelessly through the internet?

Well, I'm pretty sure that DHCP should be enabled unless you've specifically turned it off on the router. If you want a wired connection, just get a cheap Ethernet switch to expand the number of wired ports. If you have a computer connected to the router, just check and see if it has the DHCP client enabled. If so, obviously the DHCP server on the router is working.

I have a Dell Precision Tower 5810 running Windows 8.1 Pro 64-bit
I created Rescue Media for the Macrium Reflect Free Imaging Software on a USB Flash Drive.
I can boot to that USB Flash Drive IF I can first boot into Windows 8.1 Pro 64-bit
But, the chances are that when I will need that Rescue Media, I probably will not be able to boot into Windows 8.1 Pro 64-bit.
I have tried to directly access the UEFI by pressing the F2 key at the Dell Logo after powering on the System. I also tried F12. Neither has worked.
Is there something different that needs to be done on a Dell Precision Tower 5810 running Windows 8.1 Pro 64-bit to directly access the UEFI & change the boot sequence when I cannot boot into Windows?

For future reference follow these steps

How to take ownership of a folder
You must have ownership of a protected folder in order to access it. If another user has restricted access and you are the computer administrator, you can access the folder by taking ownership.

To take ownership of a folder, follow these steps:

1. Right-click the folder that you want to take ownership of, and then click Properties.
2. Click the Security tab, and then click OK on the Security message (if one appears).
3. Click Advanced, and then click the Owner tab.
4. In the Name list, click your user name, or click Administrator if you are logged in as Administrator, or click the Administrators group. If you want to take ownership of the contents of the folder, select the Replace owner on subcontainers and objects check box.
5. Click OK, and then click Yes when you receive the following message:
You do not have permission to read the contents of directory folder name. Do you want to replace the directory permissions with permissions granting you Full Control?
All permissions will be replaced if you click Yes.

Note folder name is the name of the folder that you want to take ownership of.
6. Click OK, and then reapply the permissions and security settings that you want for the folder and its contents.

Hi tech guys, today I experienced a lockup during Windows startup. I had some strange errors in the past days so it was a little expected. Kind of a big problem but nothing a Windows reinstallation can't fix.

Last time such a thing happened, it simply formatted my whole HDD, losing all my documents and programs. This time, I tried to only reinstall my windows folder using a boot from cd to keep my files. All worked as expected besides that I lost all my sessions. Since all my files are in a protected folder that can only be viewed a session that doesn't exist anymore I'm screwed.

How do I hack these protections and get my stuff back?

C:\Documents and Settings\YourUserName is what Windows XP previously called the User file. The User file in all versions of Windows since then are C:\Users\yourusername. Librariess are the place holders introduced in Windows 7 with short cuts to the directories (Pictures, Music Etc) in the User File. There are no directories or files that you can access or rename called Documents and Settings.
You will have to remap the Momento Photo book to C:\Users\YourUserName\(My)Pictures\Momento Photo book or whatever the name of the file that Photobook creates.

A:C:\Documents and Settings\owner\Local Settings\Temp\Temporary Internet Files\Content.

Hi Welcome to TSG!!

If you log on as administrator you should be able to delete everything in the C:\Documents and Settings\owner\Local Settings\Temp\Temporary Internet Files\Content.IE5 folder.

If you sign in as "owner" you should be able to remove everything except index.dat if you close all of your browser windows.

There is a These in settings. should Failed registry! change to proxy settings never internet software Failed to change internet proxy settings. These settings should never in registry! which often changes the proxy settings so I decided to config the internet settings registry right to reject the proxy settings But When I decided to delete this software and return the rights back I suddenly found that I can not change the proxy settings manually The detail is that I change the auto proxy url to let my pc use a pac file and I don't want any softwares to change However when I decided to give the rights back and try to change the url back it never success and even the same when i'm sure I have cleared this url in the whole registry but it back as it never changes I check the registry rights twice or more to make sure that the rights has given back just like it originally should be But it never works So the result is I have to clear and reinstall the WINDOWS AGAIN Never should you save such information both in registry and somewhere I don't know Or you should let these stuffs out of the registry

Hi,
Yeah, you may think this seems like just a normal message from oc'ing too much, but a problem-I haven't overclocked anything! It booted to that point, then my hard drive went mad clicking and crashed. This was after it being turned on and off to see if my graphics card was booting because I had no video, but it turned out I had just been downright stupid and plugged it into the onboard graphics. Anyone know what could have happened? Thanks

P.S. would the power drawing thing (molex on my case fan) need to have a seperate connector or just draw power from another device? Thanks.

A:'Previous overclock settings failed, default settings enabled'

If this happens just once then I wouldn't worry about it too much but the PSU or HDD could have something to do with it.

You can connect a molex connector fan to its own power connector or you can put it on an optical drive's connector for example, but it's ok to do either as they don't use much power.

Hi,

Looking for advice on how to find where the touch pad settings may be hidden on this laptop I'm working on? I've looked in the control panel and there is no icon for touch pad and I've looked in the mouse settings without finding any options to change the settings for the touch pad? The laptop is an acer Aspire 5520-5912 running Vista Home Premium Service pack 2. Any ideas?

A:Can't find touch pad settings in Control Panel/Mouse settings anywhere?

Hi loki2007 Usually, Windows install it's own Microsoft Legacy Drivers for a touchpad on a laptop, and these drivers doesn't enable the "Advanced" settings that allows you to control the touchpad. In order to do that, you have to install the laptop touchpad drivers which will add that tab in the Mouse options.Download and install these drivers:http://global-download.acer.com/GDFiles/Driver/TouchPad/Touchpad_Synaptics_9.1.16_Vistax86.zip?acerid=633639058794305220&Step1=NOTEBOOK&Step2=ASPIRE&Step3=ASPIRE%205520&OS=ALL&LC=en&BC=ACER&SC=PA_4Let me know if they install or not.

Hello, i have a Samsung Laptop with Windows 7 loaded and there is some software provided by Samsung, one of these "Easy Settings"

I have noticed that the setting for Express Cache Mode and Battery life Extender (and i'm sure a few others have changed) keep randomly switching to OFF when I have set them to be ON.

Has anyone had any experience of this software or have any idea why it could be doing this? I was thinking it could it be a conflict with some Winodws settings?

Any help would be great, cheers.

Hello,
Is it possibly the Anniversary Update, which has blocked my possibilities to change the Lock Screen configuration? In Settings->Personalisation that whole option is greyed out today and I'm stuck with a lock screen, which I can't modify or change. Any help for this? Perhaps there is a registry change I could apply? I would be happy for any suggestion.

I've attached an image. My language is Swedish, but I guess that you will recognise the part of the Settings->Personalisation, which is shown.

Thanks in advance

When I started up it says Win.ini corrupt. Then it starts
up as a new user losing track of Favorites and Start Menu
and Desktop Icons, Display and Folder attributes. Under
Documents and Settings it has added Dave.U5R2D5 in
addition to Dave which still has all the information. I tried
switching the 2 Filenames to get back to what it used to be but
gave an error message and didn't do it and started another new file.
Is there some way to use the old Dave file?

A:Lost settings, New user made in Documents and Settings

Hiya asd123321.

It sounds like you`ve re-installed the system from CD over the top of an existing system, giving you a fresh `Dave`. Have you recently run a repair or indeed, done a clean install ?

As a work-around, can you take the documents & favourites from the old `Dave` and put them in the new `Dave` so at least you`re back up and running again.

Hi I don t really use Flash except for when an occasional webpage has something on it I guess I just checked and see that I have Flash Version The latest version on the Flash website is I thought I read something about Settings In Flash? What Settings In Settings Manager? I do update do I need to download run the Flash uninstaller first Then download install the newest version of Flash I m also wondering what are the best safest settings to have on each tab of the Flash Settings Manager http www macromedia com support document manager html I didn t even realize such a think existed until this morning -- and am wondering if I may have Need To Update Flash? What Settings In Settings Manager? quot unsafe quot settings currently I use Firefox so I don t think I even have Flash installed for IE so I wasn t going to bother downloading the one for that But how can I make sure I don t have Flash for IE installed currently Any help is appreciated -- thanks

A:Need To Update Flash? What Settings In Settings Manager?

1. I cant help you with this one but I will say that most companies recommend their newest versions because they usually include security patchs or other updates.2. I'm not a hundred percent clear on what your asking here but you click the link on this site here to download the installer.http://www.adobe.com/shockwave/download/do...mp;promoid=BIOWWhen it is completely finished downloading, doubleclick the installer icon.Or maybe you were looking specifically for thishttps://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/browse/type:7Its the second one down. This is the flash player firefox add-on from the Mozilla website.*****I just checked the second link, it only redirects you to the first one.3. I would set all of the options you can to ask. That way if a legitimate Flash object is used you can approve it. If you typing an email (for example) and a suspicious flash alert pops up, you can kill it by denying it. (A small popup box will appear each time a flash object is present. Under the storage options it is up to you how much data you allow to be stored on your computer. I would recommend that you allow no data to be stored. The downside to this is that the Flash videos may take longer to load. For the next two tabs I would set these at Ask again for the reasons stated above. The automatic updates are a preference issue. For Privacy Settings, again I would set all to ask. I frequent youtube, so I set that site only to always allow. For the final storage setting option, again, Always Ask. I made another exception here for youtube. This, I found, make youtube faster while streaming.4. If you open up internet explorer and go to http://www.macromedia.com/software/flash/about/ it will tell you your flash player version in a small grey box in the middle of the page.Hope i pointed you in the right direction.

I'm on Windows 8.1 and I can't find this for the life of me (metro/modern UI settings).
Had made all of it pink at some point in the past, and don't use it much. Now I want to change it to a different colour because I plan to use it.

I open "Computer Settings" from the "charm bar", and for people making videos about it on Youtube, they have "Personalize" as the first option you see.

I can't find it. Clicking on Personalization inside the Modern UI opens up the regular Control Panel which doesn't have the modern bits in it.

When I do manage to open Personalization, it has only avatar, desktop and lock screen.

Just to clarify what I mean, I want to change the colour that's cerise/pink in the picture below.
Any tips appreciated!

A:Opening the settings for metro/modern UI settings

Hello Martienne,

Be sure that you are on your Start screen when you open the Settings charm to see Personalize.

The pinkish color on the left side of your screenshot would be the accent color you select.

If you like, Option One in the tutorial below will give more details to help.

I Need Help!
I was wondering if it is a issue to delete files in "Documents and Settings\Username\Local Settings\Temp". I am really looking if it is safe to delete the "Documents and Settings\Kenny Hartwick\Local Settings\Temp" files.

Thanks!

A:Should I Delete "Documents and Settings\Username/Local Settings\Temp"

I don't know who Kenny Hartwick is, but deleting temp files is NOT a problem. Just get his permission, willya.

:)

edit: if you click Start, All Programs, Accessories, System Tools, Disk Cleanup you'll run a nice little routine that lets you select those, among other, files to remove as well as a file compactor for rarely used files.

Ever since upgrading to Windows 8.1 I haven't been able to change my update settings. The drop-down is greyed out and can't be clicked on. Above the drop down it says "Some settings are managed by your system administrator"

I've deleted my user account and created a new one, but the problem remains. I've unlocked the Administrator account, but even through that account the settings can't be changed. I'm not in a homegroup, as I've heard this could solve the problem and I've disconnected and reconnected my Microsoft account to my User Account to no avail.

Please help, Windows keeps updating and I don't have the bandwidth to continue this way.

I think there are threads on this subject. Haven't been able to find any one that solves my problem.

A:Can't Change Update Settings "Some settings are managed.."

Hello C, and welcome to Eight Forums.

This sounds like a group policy has been set to prevent access to those settings. As you found out, this would be a global setting applied to all user accounts (new and old).

Please post a screenshot showing your Windows Update settings to help narrow down which policy it may be since there are a few for Windows Update.

Our current Windows 8/IE10 tablets apply a group policy which sets up the IE proxy configuration and prevents users from changing that configuration.
This is done using the settings "Prevent changing proxy settings" and "Disable changing automatic configuration settings" (located at computer configuration\administrative templates\windows components\internet explorer).
With Windows 8.1/IE11, the proxy server settings are still greyed out in the LAN settings dialog box under Internet Options\Connections in the desktop IE environment.
However in 8.1 the proxy settings can also be accessed from the Settings charm: Settings - Change PC Settings - Network - Proxy. From this location, ordinary users can modify and save changes to the proxy configuration.
Is there any way to lock this down?

A:Locking down IE proxy settings under PC Settings\Network\Proxy on Windows 8.1

Update on this - a very helpful Microsoft engineer came back with a workaround which, while not ideal, is a lot better than letting users change their proxy settings.
When I said I was going to post it here, the engineer said to make sure I started with the statement that Binary registry keys as used in this solution shouldn't generally be messed about with, and that editing the registry without first backing it up may
also lead to plagues of locusts, etc. All the usual disclaimers, so use this at your own risk.
His solution, which we've tested, involves switching from per-user proxy settings to per-machine proxy settings.
The Microsoft workaround word for word is:
The first thing we need to do is to export the following registry key from a machine that has the correct proxy settings set.
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings\Connections
This contains the following 2 binary registry keys which have the connections settings: ?DefaultConnectionSettings? and ?SavedLegacySettings?
The next step is to open the newly exported .reg file and to change the path:
From: HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings\Connections
To: HKEY_Local_Machine\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings\Connections
For a test on a single machine you can manually change this, from elevated cmd: regedit <file>.reg
For a bigger scale you can create a script to deploy the file containing the binary registry keys from the .reg file we exported with the path HKLM.
The final steps as discussed we need the following policy applied:

http://gpsearch.azurewebsites.net/#683

the policy is not being applied correctly then deploy the Registry Item directly:
If
HKLM\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings
ProxySettingsPerUser
Dword
Value=0
We have the following values:
0 -> policy set at machine level.
1 -> policy set at user level.

I have two windows 7 desktops connected on a LAN. I do not use the Homegroup sharing (have problem with IP6 on one of the machines) anyway I prefer the conventional standard workgroup share system. Now neither computers use IDs and passwords (left blank). But when I try and access a share on one machine from another, I get the id and password box, yet none are set. And I get stuck here and cannot access shared drives (and have locally set the drive to share with the hand symbol under the drive). How can I access the shares on the other machine. Both are on the same LAN and see each other. Never had this prob with XP although that had its own problematic ways of working at times. Mike

I need help accessing my IDE HDD connected via USB SATA/IDE hdd adapter (model usb-dsc9). This HDD was my primary on an old computer running Win7 and still has all the files. I am currently running Win8.1.

The HDD shows in My Computer as a removable disk, with an auto-assigned letter. When I try to open it, I am told to "please insert a disk". It is showing in device manager as USB mass storage device with no errors. It is also listed in disk management under my primary hdd. The hdd is powered by the adapter and I can hear it spinning.

Any help is appreciated,

Hello,

I'm running Windows 7 and have a friend who has given me a HD from their computer, which doesn't work.

I plugged it into my system, and can access the HD, but keep getting errors saying that I don't have the proper permission to view the JPG's I've been asked to retrieve.

I can't even just drag the files to a memory stick I have plugged into my USB.

What is the way around this? Do I have to find out their password, and enter it somewhere?

Any thoughts

Thanks

My wife and I have some friends who have a PC which doesn't work anymore, and they gave it to me to try and help. They were using XP.

The overall system is done, but they wanted to get photos from the HD, which are many of family, and they don't want to lose them.

I connected the HD to my system, which runs Windows 7, and can see the folders in question, but can't drag them to my USB stick, or my HD or anything.

It says I don't have permission to view these photos...is there a password they need to give me? Or is this a Windows 7 security issue?

They're anxious to hear some news, any help would be greatly appreciated.

I'll be speaking with them over this weekend, and hope to have their photos back.

Thanks in advance for any ideas.

I am a military service member trying to access my OWA e-mail and Defense Travel System (DTS) with a MacBook Pro. I am currently running Mac OS X Lion 10.7.5. I did not have any issues in accessing my OWA or DTS until December of last year. I understand there was a software update to Mac OS X Lion during this time and this could be the reason.

Whenever I try to login my OWA I get the following error:

Whenever I try to login to DTS I get the following error:

My Lenovo Y710 has 4 gig of RAM installed, but Vista, of course, only used 3 gig. I thought when I upgraded to Win7 (32bit) that it would use all 4 gig, but system information says it's still only using 3 gig. Is there a setting I can change or perhaps a BIOS upgrade that will cause the machine to use all 4 gig of RAM.

Thanks in advance,
John P. Sparkman

A:Accessing 4 gig of RAM

32-bit OS(s) can only addressed roughly 3.5gb of ram. 64-bit can use all 4gb. However if you have a embedded video card, it will take some of that memory.

I am trying to access some functions in a DLL created in VC. When I make the call to the function VB returns the error that it can't find the DLL. I've checked the spelling SEVERAL times. It's spelled correctly. I've also tried placing the DLL in the local folder where my VB APP is, in the Windows System folder and in the Windows System32 folder. The VC program finds the DLL in all these locations, but the VB program does not. I've even tried hard-coding the path to the DLL. Still no luck. Here's the declaration and call:

Declare Function ZMDOpenPort Lib "ZMDSerialComm.dll" Alias "OpenPort" (ByVal port As Long, baudRate As Long, parity As Long, stopBits As Long, nCOM As Long) As Long
Call ZMDOpenPort( MyPort, MyBaud, MyParity, MyStop, MyCom )

A:Accessing VC compiled DLL in VB6

Hello tim8w. I'm no expert on VC but seeing as you haven’t had any replies, I thought I’d have a go. I wrote a DLL in VC a while ago and had problems getting VB 6 to access it. Eventually I figured it out. First of all the function you are calling from VB must be declared “void __stdcall”, Eg “void __stdcall dosomething()” in your C++ source file. Second, you must have a definitions (.DEF) file. Without it VB cannot see the functions you are trying to export from your DLL. My one exported two functions, filereplace() and filereplaceall(), and and looked like this:

; filerpl.def : Declares the module parameters for the DLL.

LIBRARY "filerpl"
DESCRIPTION 'filerpl Windows Dynamic Link Library'

EXPORTS
; Explicit exports can go here
filereplace @1
filereplaceall @2

I hope this helps. BTW I'ma ssuming you wrote the DLL. If you did not try registering it.

I put a new boot drive in my computer and am using my old one as storage space on the computer. Because I had a system administrator password for my username on my old drive windows will not let me access files I had on my desktop or in the My Documents folder. There is a lot of music and video files I had in these two places that I need to get back. I can not get my old drive to work as the boot drive at all, have tried everything from reinstalling windows on it, to changing jumper settings and even in BIOS but can't get it to work. I am looking for a way to get around this password. When I try to access the folders the files are in it say that it is not accessible. Can anyone please help me?

Thanks in advance.

A:Need Help Accessing Data

Hi tci,Let's give this a shot. Create an XP boot disk. Right click the start button and select explore.Place a floppy disk into the computer - one you can erase. On the explorer screen - right click the "A" drive and select FORMAT - A being the FLOPPY DRIVEA new window will display - check the box that says "CREATE A MS-DOS START-UP DISK"The disk will format.************************************************Now, boot to this disk. If you hard drive is shown as drive "D", type D: (where D is the drive letter of the hard drive to be browsed to)type cd d:\documements and settings\administrator\my documentsHopefully this will have you in the right place on your hard drive. Type dir /p (This should display a directory listing for the administrator's my documents directory that is in paged form... press a key to continue scrolling through list.************************************************Try this first! Copy files to your new hard drive by doing the following: type:copy *.* c:\documents and settings\administrator\my documents\*.*Should move all files in the "my documents" directory.Next type:cd my picturescopy *.* c:\documents and settings\administrator\my documents\my pictures\*.*Should move all files in my pictures directoryType cd .. Type cd my videosType copy *.* c:\documents and settings\administrator\my documents\my videos\*.*Should move all files in my videos directoryType cd .. Type cd my musicType copy *.* c:\documents and settings\administrator\my documents\my music\*.*This may move the files to you new hard drive without issue. ************************************************If that doesn't work, try copying the files to a floppyStart copying your files to disk by doing the following:copy filename.ext a: (filename = name of your file ext = the extention ex: test.doc)If you don't have a lot of files to move this works: copy *.* a:When you have you files on disk, boot the new drive and use windows explorer to move the files where you want them on your new hard drive. ************************************************Hopefully booting into dos will ignore the password problem within XP. Good luckRigel

BTW, there's no "advanced" button in the sharing tab of "properties" for this folder

I have Windows XP on my laptop. The system crashed and I want to get my data out so I removed the harddrive and connected it to another laptop via a USB cable. I can open all of the data except for the one protected under my user name folder, because I had a password. Is there a way I can get into that folder (I still have the password) without running windows?

A:can't accessing websites

Lets start with the basics

Download the trial version of Ewido Security Suite http://www.ewido.net/en/download/ Win2K and XP only
Install ewido.
During the installation, under "Additional Options" uncheck both "Install background guard" and "Install scan via context menu".
Launch ewido
It will prompt you to update click the OK button and it will go to the main screen
On the left side of the main screen click update
Click on Start and let it update.
DO NOT run a scan yet. You will do that later in safe mode.
You might print the next part out to use in safe mode.

Restart your computer into safe mode now. Perform the following steps in safe mode:

Run Ewido:
Click on scanner
Click Complete System Scan and the scan will begin.
During the scan it will prompt you to clean files, click OK
When the scan is finished, look at the bottom of the screen and click the Save report button.
Save the report to your C: Drive
This will take some time to run!
Boot to normal mode
Post that log and a HiJack log. Let me know if you need help with the hijack this app...doc

I have a Toshiba Laptop with no OS. I have tried to install the factory settings that came with the CD, but there is no OS installed. Somehow the OS has been completely removed. When I try to access the BIOS I find it is password protected, and I have no idea what the password is. Anyone know how to override the password, or otherwise gain access to the BIOS?

I recently installed a new hard drive with windows xp, and now my old hard drive is Slave, but I need to get into my old registry and find something

is there I way I can take a look through my old registry, wich is now on my secondary drive

------

just to clear this up, I have a bunch of games and mods of games on my old drive that wont work now, but I think they wont work because of missing keys in the registry

I had a similar problem a some time ago after I moved some drives around, and changed some drive letters, and eventually found out that it could be solved just by changing a drive letter in a registry key to match the drive that the game is now on

but after this fresh XP install on a brand new drive, I cant find the path to these keys in my registry (cuz its a new registry from a fresh install on a new drive)

I know if I could browse my old registry, I could find this area, and make matching registry keys to make my games work

and yes I could just reinstall all the games, but theres a few of em, and alot of mods, and it would just be less of a pain in the *** this way, rather than haveing to reinstall mods and settings/controll configurations/video settings and all that kind of stuff I would be faceing

wait, just got a brain storm, if I reinstall just one of the games on the new drive, without deleteing the others, then the key would be in the registry, then I could find it, and change it to mach the old copy of the game ...maybe

but Id still like to know how to browse my old registry if possible, just out of curiosity, is it possible ?Click to expand...

Hi motherboard1,

Anything is possible! In order to do what you want, you would more than likely need a Win32 API program to do it which points to your old registry files on the slave disk.

Here is some VBS code you could download and modify to suit your needs:
Visual Basic Read and Modify the Registry at:
