Lost Playback Device

Q: Lost Playback Device

Here is my issue: I'm missing my Conexant playback device. I have an HP Pavillion 2610us notebook which is running Windows Vista Home Premium 32 bit OS. All of a sudden, I've lost all sounds, but iTunes, Pandora and other programs seems to be working well and continue to play tracks. After checking my control panel, I've noticed that my Conexant is missing. However, there is still the Speakers: Bluetooth Hands Free Audio and Bluetooth Stereo Audio in my Device Manager. I've tried the following steps:

1. Ran HP Recovery Manager to re-install original audio drivers. However, "Driver Installation Failed: Could not find the device for this driver" appeared and was unsuccessful.

2. I've downloaded and attempted to install the Conexant driver, sp37858, specific for this notebook, from the HP website. Still, "Driver Installation Failed: could not find the device for this driver."

These were all ran as administrator. Any useful suggestions?

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

go to device manager update your driver there. When it asks if you want to look on the internet say no. Browse to the downloaded file you downloaded from their site

I was wondering if you could give me some advice on a current computer issue So I've got my TV hooked up to my PC as an extra monitor via HDMI Up until last night I was able to get audio from my PC to be played heard whatever through the TV Earlier in the evening I saw a bunch of Windows Updates needing to be installed so I installed them One update was for the Intel Graphics Card HDMI as Device No Longer Device Appears Playback Audio wasn't able to be installed because of Windows Update Error which apparently appears when Windows tries to HDMI Audio Device No Longer Appears as Playback Device install something already installed I didn't think much of it at the time and proceeded with the post-install restart TV's HDMI audio was still working at this point Shortly after the restart upon resuming watching the video from before I noticed that the TV's HDMI audio was no longer playing I HDMI Audio Device No Longer Appears as Playback Device checked the Audio Device manager to see if it somehow got deactivated and found that it was no longer listed as a possible playback device I double-checked to make sure unactivated devices weren't being hidden from view which they weren't I tried un-plugging the HDMI device restarting re-plugging - to no avail I try replugging the HDMI cable into a different port on the back of the TV I then try to do a system restore to before the installed the updates but that didn't work Windows said they it was unable to restore anything so no settings were changed I try to re-install the Intel Graphics update via Windows Update but I get that Error again I double check my nVidia GeForce driver - which turned out to need an update so I update restart - still no TV listed as possible Audio Playback source I manually installed the Intel Graphics driver update from the Intel website Still no TV listed as possible Audio playback source I then go to update reinstall the RealTek HD Audio drivers - Still no TV listed as possible Audio playback source I am pretty much fresh out of troubleshooting ideas Aside from maybe uninstalling and reinstalling the drivers or re-formatting Let me know if you think there is anything you can think of the help

A:HDMI Audio Device No Longer Appears as Playback Device

If you have NVIDIA GE Force, that suggests it is the active video device, rather than the Intel. Check the Device Manager, Sounds section to see what is listed and if there are any error codes for the NVIDIA HDMI Audio.

A:Solved: Playback Audio through different device than the Default Device - Possible?

Hah, finally found out all by my self ^^

Windows Media Player 11 -> Tools -> Options -> Devices -> Speakers -> "Select the audio device."

As simple as that, amazing I haven't noticed that before - I've looked through the settings of WMP11 tons of times to no avail.

I have not been using sound on my computer, because there is an adjoining room and I usually am on this time of night. My houseguest is no longer here. When I try to play a CD (audio--music) I get the message no playback device.
I can pull up Microsoft media player and it appears to "hear" the music and responds visually, but no audio.
I have checked all the volumes--no mute; speakers are plugged in and power is on; I went to Device Manager and everything appears to be present and accounted for; there are not any exclamation marks; anything remotely sounding like sound, I have opened and all are working properly--except the device. Now what should I try next?

Well I'm having this problem with a few of my games - Counter Strike Source and Half Life Deathmatch The problem is that whenever I try to change the Speaker Configuration to Headphones it always reverts back to Speakers after I go back in the options to check This seems to be related to my Windows sound settings since whenever I change my Speakers Configuration in the Sound window to like Stereo or Quadraphonic or or Surround the option the games change respectively to Speakrs Speakrs I don't think that the things should be related meaning I Headphones as playback device. should be able to change my option in game to whatever I want despite what I've chosen in the Windows settings Now since I don't think Headphones as playback device. there is a way to make my game not know what I've set the windows audio settings to I need to find a way to get my headphones recognized by the OS and have quot Headphones quot instead of quot Speakers quot Unfortunately I have no idea how to do that I've tried to look for a guide or figure it out myself but with no luck This is what I can see in the Sound Options I think I've seen while I was looking for a way to fix this that other people have the quot headphones quot in their Sound playback tab but I don't

A:Headphones as playback device.

If you have a specific headphones port on your sound card/motherboard, try using that. Often times with onboard sound, you'll have a set of ports on the back and then a set of ports on the front. The front ports are usually set to headphones.

Also, try updating your drivers if you haven't already.

But now I can just play in speakers.
Alternatively, can I set different application to play in playback device individually ?

A:How to play in other playback device?

I'm actually running into this same issue. I have 1 sound card, the internal sound, and sound through the HDMI port of my video card, but the internal audio overrides everything as long as something is plugged into it. If I unplug my speakers, then the audio jumps to my TV (through the HDMI).

So I would also like to know about choosing the audio output, or if you can choose to have the audio go out to all devices simultaneously.

The typical way to change a playback device is by going into "Control Panel" -> "Sound" -> "Playback", and from there select your desire playback device.

I would like to know if there's a way that I could make this simpler such as writing a simple command line script or some sort because I have multiple audio outputs on my computer.

I tried to search in this forum with a search string "playback device" and no luck, any help would be appreciated.

A:Default Playback Device?

Are you setting the "speakers" as the default Playback Device and in the Control Panel/Hardware and Sound/Sound Panel? If not that is where you need to set the defaul Playback device.

When you "turn off" the PC are you using the Windows "Shut down" button to power off or are you just powering it off with the PC's power button or a switch on a power strip? If you don't use the Windows "Shut down" it won't save any changes.

Chances are that you are not using the SPDIF. Install the unknown device. Try updating with right-click or look for audio drivers at Dell.

I have system with multiple Sound playback devices. Most of the time it needs to be on the first entry in the list of devices (HDMI output with me).
I'm looking for a way that when I have manually set it to another device in the list, and then shut down the pc that at the next boot it automatically reverts back to the first in the list without manual intervention.

Any idea how to make that happen ?

A:How to set default sound playback device

Depends on the system. On some if there is an HDMI cable plugged in to the Video Card's HDMI port then it automatically defaults to the HDMI on others it requires a manual change. If yours requires the manual change I doubt that you can automate it, as in those cases Windows uses the last set device as the "default" when rebooting.

I am trying to run a call center addon on top of Skype on a Win2008 server. The server, as it would be expected, has not playback output device.

This is a problem because Skype does not accept any incoming call if the local machine has no speaker. Yet, since the call will be forwarded anyway, it should not really matter.

Thus, I would need a "virtual sound output", somewhat in the spirit of

Note that the Virtual Audio Cable (VAC) mentioned the past thread do produce a "virtual sound input" (recording) but no output (playback), thus it still does not work.

A:Win 8.1: Can I lock the default playback device?

You could disable the HDMI audio in the Device Manager. Then you would have to enable it again to use it. Otherwise Windows automatically switches to HDMI when an HDMI cable is connected.

Hello! I'm wondering how to create a virtual audio device for Windows 7. As in, a virtual audio device that shows up here: 273be50f07df62c03b32e53634c529ea.png Why? Mostly because I'd like to be able to live stream while talking to people on Skype who are also watching the stream without it echoing for them. Basically my plan is to create a virtual audio device that either my stream software will record (so it will have most of my computer's audio), and then another device that handle Skype, or vise-versa. If anyone knows a way to do this, or, if anyone knows a better way to accomplish this task, that'd be much appreciated.

I open the playback devices tab under sound and click on my Siberia v2 illuminated headset and click set as default device and it does nothing. I can't disable my speakers or my headset. Extremely frustrating because I'm sure there's a simple solution surely.

A:How to record from my playback device in Windows 7

Under sound you have to right click and go to properties and turn on stereo mix. Make sure your sound drivers are up to date. And reboot after updating them.

There are some websites that explain it but basically what I was looking for was "Stereo Mix"

The default device is set as my speakers and I'd like to set it as my headphones. I've tried reinstalling the drivers multiple times (I'm using IDT, can I use something else or do I have to use these?), and various other tips I've seen, and it refuses to change.
I'm using Windows 7 Home Premium 64 bit, and an HP Envy 14.

Odd, I've only experienced headphone jacks being ignored in ubuntu :/
Anyway, have you tried right clicking on the windows audio icon? One of the advanced options should be device selection.

You said all current drivers... where did you get the drivers from?

Have you tried totally uninstalling the drivers (in add/remove programs) then shutting down and removing the card itself, boot and make sure it is totally gone.

Now shut down and reinstall the card and try again.

Hello. I have a problem with sound software or hardware (I dont know ).
When I open the sound and audio device menu in control panel and click on the audio tab, the sound playback device list is inactive(it says that i haven't any devices).
I tried:
1. Reinstall Sound drivers (C-media AC97)
2. Use system restore
3. Install otheer drivers (that's why I used the system restore)
Can anyone answer because I can't live without sound

A:Solved: No Sound Playback Device

Welcome to TSG Andzha, hope we can get you fixed. You are posting in the wrong thread this needs to be in Hardware...anyway

Unistall the system sound device and see if it will find it again w/scan for hardware changes or reboot.

this was working and now its not? Also googled and found this

advised to boot in safe mode, remove all drivers under sounds, multimedia, etc. and then restart in normal mode. Lo and behold, it worked....thanks for the reply duckie, but I had already tried reinstalling drivers several times but didnt know about doing it in safe mode.......thanks again.........

I hope there are windows media player diagnostic procedures.

I've realized that all the media player playback functionality has been lost. I cannot even play sample wma files that comes with Windows. No videos in standalone player or Firefox/IE plugins work either.

Media Center can play recorded TV.
Zune software can play everything.
And I checked with something called codec_sniper, most of the codecs in the system are OK.
I can also use PowerDVD, even for BluRay playback.

So it is the WMP that has the problem.

I recently upgraded to 7100 x64. I had no problems on 7000 x64 with the same setup (same video drivers, same software, and btw "upgrade" was actually a reinstall).

Are there any diagnostic procedures to find out what is wrong?

==== Ok, I solved the problem. The culprit was the Creative Driver...

A:I've completely lost all playback in media player

I had a similar issue and found out it was the registry cleaner that caused the problems, have you used one?

I have headphones through onboard audio set as the default playback device.

I have HDMI set to listen stereo mix (onboard) under recording devices so that I can get duplicate audio on my headphones and TV.

Windows 7 likes to set as HMDI audio as the default playback device when I am not looking (assumedly shortly after rebooting, but not quite sure when). And then I get no sound from my headphones because the programs are all playing on HDMI.

Is there way I can fix this?

A:HDMI hijacks default playback device

Hmm; I think HDMI is mutually exclusive to pc { speakers & headphones }. If the HDMI senses a signal to the tv, then the others go off.

right-click on the speaker icon in the tray and view/set the playback devices

I can seem to make it stick for having my Creative Card as the primary default output device, it always switches back to my headset unless i un plug it !

Any ideas?

A:Sony Vaio greets but No Playback Device

Look in Device Manager. Under "Sound, Video & Game Controllers".
You should see XXXX Audio Device (where XXXX is the actual make/model of the sound device).

You only get sound from CD/DVD if there is audio content on it (such as a DVD-Video soundtrack, or a multimedia CD/DVD).

I recently upgraded from Windows 7 to Windows 8.1 and the biggest problem I noticed was when listening to music, playing games, etc. If I change my default playback device while audio is running (from a game or itunes etc) the audio would not switch to the new default device. I never encountered this issue with Windows 7. I did some research and believe this is called stream routing. The only application I've noticed this still works properly for is Google Chrome.
Has anybody else encountered this issue and is there a known fix for it? I spoke with a friend whom also runs Windows 8.1 and he has the same issue.
I'm constantly switching between my USB headset and speakers when listening to music/playing games, depending on what is more comfortable. This would definitely be a buzzkill for Windows 8 if I had to restart all my applications that are using audio every time I switch my playback device...

A:change playback device without restarting applications

It is a long known issue with both Windows and third party software. You just need to decide what you are going to use to listen to audio while logged in.

I have attached the options that i could see.

A:No HDMI output in Playback device list

I think what I need to know here is your mobility graphics card information.
First we need to determine if the device supports hdmi audio and then we will more than likely need to track down a driver specifically for it.
In the case of hdmi, the video card controls the audio. So it may not even appear in the volume control the way most other audio does.

A:Constantly have to change default playback device

The short answer is No. On many systems if there is an HDMI cable plugged into the PC it automatically defaults to the HDMI as the "default sound playback device" and with the cable inserted you have to manually switch it back to the speakers.

On some others, You have to manually switch to which output you want, the HDMI or the Analog (or digital) "speakers".

But in either case it has to be done at the PC.

I would suggest some other hookup method, with HDMI, at your theatre system, so you can do it somewhere other than at the PC.

What model PC?

But, generally if you have the speakers set as default playback device and the plug in a headset it will automatically switch to the headset, unplug the headset and it will revert to the speakers.

For the front panel headset/mic jack, is the cable that's connected to the motherboard labeled "HD Audio"? or is it the older "AC97". Some sound system control panels have a setup for whichever you have (the HD Audio is the preferred connector).

A few weeks ago, my computer froze so I did a complete system restore (I think pressing the main power button on my computer a few times and holding it).

After all of that and my computer straightened itself out, I went to play music on my computer, but whenever I would attempt to play music, my music player (iTunes) said that I don't have a default playback device and therefore my computer couldn't play music.

Is there any way to set a default playback device?

I installed a new soundcard thinking that that would work, but it didn't help either.

If anybody could please help me, I would greatly appreciate it, and you would bring the music back to my dreary college room.

Many thanks!

What "driver update" did you do?

There is nothing showing, either for the RealTek PC audio or the NVIDIA HDMI audio.

RIGHT click in a blank area in the Playback panel and check to Show Disabled and Disconnected devices. If nothing still shows up RIGHT click on the RealTek entry to highlight it in the Device Manager and then LEFT click "Uninstall". DO NOT uninstall the driver. Then restart the PC and when Windows starts it will detect and reinstall it.

I've not posted much in here and this is the first attempt to actually help somebody else here but I know that more info is going to be needed in order to get to the bottom of this. What kind of computer is it? Dell, Gateway, HP Pavilion, home made? Also, what was it you were trying to download before the error occurred?

I have a bluetooth headset, and I've paired/added it to my laptop. I check all its services and the drivers installed fine. But for some reason, the sound still goes through the speakers. I went to Control Panel->Hardware and Sounds->Sounds and it only showed 2 entries- Digital Audio (HDMI) and Speakers. There was no entry for a bluetooth headset.

I've once tried installing WIDCOMM bluetooth software. It worked at first, but later it couldn't connect to my device and had problems starting its stack service.

with widcomm if that happens remove the device and then pair again

Hello Guys,

I have been living for the past week without music.. There is no sound coming out from my Lenovo Thinkpad laptop's speakers. No sound when I play movies and songs... When I try to skype, it says "Problem with play back device". No sound too when I connect my earpiece to my laptop.

I use windows vista. My laptop's sound driver is SoundMAX Integrated Digital HD Audio. Based on my "Manage audio device" options in my control panel, I have 2 sound drivers.

SoundMAX Integrated Digital HD Audio

SPDIF Interface
SoundMAX Integrated Digital HD Audio
When I right click both drivers and click "Test", it says "Failed to play tone". I have tried reinstalling the SoundMax driver but it does not work. Friends, what else can I try to solve this issue?

A:No sound from my laptop's speakers. Problem with playback device

Any errors showing in Device Manager?
Are the sound devices specifically listed there?

I assume you downloaded the driver from Lenovo support website, not from anywhere else, as only Lenovo has the correct, compatible driver.

I just got a new computer a few days ago (Acer Aspire X3400) And I have my speakers plugged into the green audio jack in the back and my headphones plugged into the black audio jack in the front but they both come under speakers in my playback devices (as well as rear black port) and if both my speakers and headphones are plugged in sound only plays through my headphones but if I got to my realtek HD audio manager and disable front panel jack detection sound plays out of both, but I want it so sound comes out of my speakers and I can hear people in my skype call through my headphones, but for that my headphones and speakers need to be shown as different devices, just want to know if I can make if show different jack as different audio devices instead of sticking a few under one device. kthxbai <3

A:How do I change my audio jacks from under one playback device option?

Is there any chance you can rewrite that and use more than 1 sentence to make it intelligible?

An occasional period would help. Maybe even some white space or multiple paragraphs.

I have also looked around for my RealTek Audio Manager and I couldn't find it anywhere but in my uninstall tab and in my Program Files folder.

I hope you guys can help me with my problems!

Hello everyone, I have a problem that is driving me crazy. I am able to access all my channels when viewing them on my Windows 7 laptop using Media Center. When I hook up a HDMI cable to the laptop and connect it to my TV I get the following error.."display driver error the video playback device does not support playback of protected content". I have updated the video card drivers and this issue still persists. Does anyone have any ideas to solve this. I am using a HDHomerun Prime and this is the only way I have to watch live TV on my TV. Thanks in advance for everyone's help

A:Windows Media Center display driver error the video playback device does not support

"display driver error the video playback device does not support playback of protected content"

Infers the content/media that you are playing is protected and/or the HDCP handshake is not taking place. This is likely a hardware issue. The video chipset (ie: HDMI port) or the TV does not support HDCP.

Try viewing a different channel or content.

That dxdiag "no sound card" message is misleading as I've found it says that if no driver OR sound card. I think you're missing the right driver

Also, it would seem from your post you have High Definition (HD) audio. Which means you'll need to find the right High Definition audio driver. (AC97 pre-dates HD audio so the Realtek AC97 couldn't be right)

Try starting on the HP support website HERE and enter your model number or they have a button where they'll try to identify your product and drivers for your model. They should list an HD audio driver there

If it worked at one time and now does not, have you tried making it the default audio playback device rather than the RealTek? Or have you tried reinstalling it?

Have lost access to device manager after uninstalling Norton v 6 in Windows 7 system.

Had explorer problems after installing version 6.0 of Norton and decided to uninstall Norton. Unfortunately this seems to have created some weird results like not being able to access device manager.

Can run services and this shows Plug and Play are started automatically; does anyone of you know whether Norton made some register changes and/or some other magic that makes device manager unaccessable after uninstalling.

Many thanks in advance

I have an "Icy Box" USB2 external hard drive enclosure with a 160Gb drive installed connected to a USB2 socket on my XP Home Edition computer.

After turning the device on, it is recognised by the computer & an icon appears in the System Tray indicating that I can safely remove it if I want to so.

My problem is that after a while, (the time varies), the device fails to be recognised by the computer. I have to turn the power off to the device then turn it back on again. The device is then recognised again.

Any help on this matter would be appreciated - many thanks!

Best wishes to you all.

Tim Cutler.

A:Lost USB2 Device.

Unplug ALL USB devices.
Open Device Manager.
View, Show Hidden Devices.
Uninstall all devices under USB Controllers.
Uninstall all devices under Storage Volumes. Say no to any reboot prompts until you are finished. Also, if a Storage Volume doesn't uninstall, ignore it and move to the next one.
If you have a yellow ? with unknown devices, uninstall all of the entries there as well.

When this is done, reboot TWICE.

Reconnect the USB devices and see if they're recognized properly.

Hello all,

I'm new here and would like to ask a question. I have a compaq presario that my brother-in-law upgraded from windows xp to windows 7. Well, because of that, I lost my audio device. I have a high definition audio device listed with a yellow sign next to it. And I have get an error message that says "This device cannot start (code 10)". I updated the driver and it says it's up-to-date. I also tried to uninstall and reinstall to no avail. I also clicked on the volume button to troubleshoot the driver and I get a message that says high definition audio device has a problem.

I went to windows support, but they have no audio drivers for windows 7. Is there anything else I can do? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

My computer has lost the d drive. I have a Compaq Pesario 5461. I was having trouble installing a game and downloaded a new driver from the Compaq website. It apparantly was not the right one and the computer would no longer reconize the d drive. I was getting "d: device not ready". I contacted Compaq support who advised me to delete the cdrom from properties and the computer would auto detect it. It hasn't. I have tried taking the cdrw completely out and putting it back in, but it still doesn't auto detect it. It is completely out of device manager and won't reinstall. I searched this site but I'm not sure exactlly what to do in bios to correct.

I built a PC in August and it runs very fast and plays games, videos and audio without issue. However, I have been getting occasional BSODs during youtube playback or when playing a video from my hard drive, even if i played the same video moments earlier without issue. I have updated all drivers windows updates, memtest to check ram but nothing seems to explain my PCs sudden desire to BSOD me.

I would be very very grateful if someone would have a look at some min-dumps for me and see if they can identify the issue as i have reached the limit of my computer diagnostic knowledge.

A:Intermitent BSOD during internet video playback or avi playback (Win7 Pro 64)

How many Passes did you allow for Memtest? I read your five most recent dumps and the were all of the same error as described below...

Your error is 0x124: WHEA_UNCORRECTABLE_ERROR and is described as "A fatal hardware error has occurred."

This error code and definition has replaced the older XP code 0x9C: MACHINE_CHECK_EXCEPTION and though it is older the definition still is applicable: This is a hardware issue: an unrecoverable hardware error has occurred. The parameters have different meanings depending on what type of CPU you have but, while diagnostic, rarely lead to a clear solution. Most commonly it results from overheating, from failed hardware (RAM, CPU, hardware bus, power supply, etc.), or from pushing hardware beyond its capabilities (e.g., overclocking a CPU).

Honestly, this is a very difficult error to work with because as it says a clear diagnosis rarely comes forth and I have never seen a minidump with either error codes give a definitive answer. I know IT techs that don't like working with it. What makes it so difficult is that it can be any hardware in your system -- and I mean any. Your dumps simply cited hardware as the issue and nothing more definitive.

Here are some of the causes that were determined to be the source of 0x124/0x9C errors from posters here and abroad: NIC, DVD/CD drives, dust build up around the CPU that caused overheating of said CPU, bulging capacitors hidden by heatsink, corrupted memory, video card, psu, motherboard, and external harddrive connected by USB.

* Anything overclocked? If so set your hardware to factory specs.

A:Direct 3D device lost problem looking at your system specs, I see one possible weak point, the 350w power supply. Granted, it's an Antec, so the quality is there, but I don't really know if 350w is enough for a 64-bit CPU, an x800XL, and other stuff as well. That Direct3D error can be caused by power management problems, so it sounds like a possible candidate to me.

Try unplugging anything you don't need from your computer - run with one hard drive, one CD drive, and unplug any lights you have on. You can unplug case fans as well (NOT fans that are on heatsinks though), as long as you leave the case open and give it proper ventilation. If it helps at all, then that's probably it. That's just what popped out right away for me.
