Preferred Solution: How do I change the owner in C:/user/owner

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/directdownload.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

A: How do I change the owner in C:/user/owner

Hello Nick, and welcome to Vista Forums.

The only way to change the C:\Users\Owner folder name is to create a new administrator account, then delete the old C:\Users\Owner account from within the new account. Be sure to copy the contents that you want to save from the old accounts user folders into the corresponding new account's user folders to restore them to the new account.

Hope this helps,
Shawn

This picture shows how my name has been changed in User Accounts and in regedit, as displayed by running winver, but yet all my files are still found at C:\Users\Owner.
When I go to C:\Users, the Owner folder is locked and cannot be renamed even though my account type is administrator, as seen here.
How do I really change the name from Owner to a name of my choosing?

I purchased my HP from a big computer store with Vista home installed on it It was an out of the box sale I thought I could avoid a wait for the to new by Change owner/administrator held owner references all previous comptuer I wanted The company Change all references held by previous owner/administrator to new owner that sold it to me was listed as the administrator The old owner took off their password before I took possession of the computer I purchased I followed instructions on how to put on a password to start the computer However there are dozens of fiels named after the previous administrator I tried to find out how to change the administrator globally to my name There is still an administrator account name and it appears the previous administrator is still above my permission status - even though i am the computer owner don't think I am the ultimate administrator yet I read that not being able to use screen print was a result of not being the administrator I can't make the screen print work either I assume some members have dealt with these matters before I would greatly appreciate anyone directing me to some good quot how to fix quot information Thank you and boy do I miss XP

I recently bought an Acer AX3810 with Vista 7 Home Premium 64 bit from the widow of my neighbor. I had transferred all his personal files and copied all the photographs to an external hard drive for her then deleted all the files using "Eraser". I cannot seem to be able to delete the previous owner as administrator. His file has a little padlock symbol on it. I changed his name to mine in the "Manage user accounts" but no matter, it is still "him" that is logged on. I created a new account in my name and then changed the status from standard to administrator but he is still "there". I feel like I am being haunted. Any ideas?

I recently purchased a Dell desktop for my son. I was able to change him to system administrator in the log-on area, but the previous owner's name is still in the registration properties, as well as in the info such as "c:\Documents and Settings\Previous Owner\My Documents\My Music". How is this information changed? I have a legal copy of an XP Pro upgrade. Would that allow the change to be made (and would I lose any data currently on the machine)? I would prefer to just change something in the registry, or whatever it takes. Please help!!!

I am helping a friend clean up her PC. It is a WinXPsp2 Home edition, Pentium 4, 1.50Ghz, with 512Mb memory of which 384 Mb is available (the rest is shared for video).

When she bought the PC her then husband registered it to his name.

She now wants to remove the name of her ex-husband from the PC. I think that I have seen a way that the name of the Registered owner (as it appears when you right click on My Computer and select properties) can be changed but can't remember how it was done.

I've had a search in the registry for her ex-husband's name and it occurs numerous time in the HKEY_CURRENT_USER hive; I stopped looking at that point.

I'm comfortable with making registry changes if that is required.

Your help will be much appreciated.

A:How do I change the Computer Owner name

Direct from the MS site.

1. Click Start, and then click Run.
2. In the Open box, type regedit, and then click OK.
3. Locate the following registry key:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion
4. To change the company name, do the following:

In the right pane, double-click RegisteredOrganization. Under Value data, type the name that you want, and then click OK.
5. To change the name of the registered owner, do the following:

In the right pane, double-click RegisteredOwner. Under Value data, type the name that you want, and then click OK.
6. Click Exit on the File menu to quit Registry Editor.

Booted the computer today. Started a media player to listen to radio. Everything fine. Tried to start another program. Message box informed me Windows unable to access file. You may not have the appropriate permissions to access the item. Now I cannot run any programs.

There is only one user account. I cannot create another because I cannot run Control Panels either. I cannot drag and drop. I can't even shut the computer down except through the Task Manager. I can't even find a way to boot into Safe Mode to see what I could do there. I am trying to avoid reinstalling everything. Help.

A:User Owner has no permissions

FIRST try this:Boot to your WinXP Setup CD
At the 1st window with the Repair option on the bottom Statusbar, do that to open the Repair Console
When you get to the Repair Console's Command Prompt enter CHKDSK C: /R (the R is not a typo)
Let CHKDSK do its thing, then reboot
Also, running CHKDSK from the desktop (via Start menu, Accessories, Command Prompt) by entering CHKDSK C: /F (the F is not a typo), occasionally. This should be part of your general system maintenance routine. Note that this will require a reboot to actually run.

SECOND: You ARE running an up-to-date AntiVirus program, correct?

Just make sure the new owner/login has administrative rights, have the new owner login and delete your old account. Are even better...most new laptops come with an option to restore to factory defaults. That's what I would do if it was an option.

Is there a way to author user/owner vs Windows 7 permanently change the default 'author quot I often post files to the web and Windows 7 user/owner vs author dont really want my personal name there In hindsight I should have created profiles for Dad Mom RJ etc and never used 'conveninent' family member names for user profiles like for example Ralph Sally Robby Admin Guest as those later name show up as authors and are visibile under document properties or meta data - a concern when files are posted to the web I tried some workarounds but they are not that great eg - some apps allow you to hide personal meta data but one does not always remember to use it - some apps dont let you hide meta data or worse unhide them - eg - apps like CutePDF bring them right back when creating a PDF file - some apps strip meta data but again you need to remember to use them snd some only work on images Ideally I'd like to be able for permanent change author and forget about it I don't dare change all occurances of Ralph to Dad as I assume that will mess-up the user profiles Any suggestions Can I create an new profile called Dad and essentially make it a close of what I currently have for Ralph I see many references to a WinEnabler app - all positive but these seem to be older posts also read quot Windows Enabler is broken by some security change on Windows SP

I guess I'm trying to see if there is a solution where I could copy to new one (vs change), so as to:
- preserve my current profile if things go south
- later purge references to the old name from Task Manager, Permissions, the Registry etc ( by deleting the old account once the new account working.

Is changing the profile name (vs copy) the only option??

Hello anaron

These files are safe to delete if you wish. There are many threads here as to where they come from, some say from windows live mail or messenger and others have different views but I don't remember there been a conclusive answer. The only thing we all agreed on is that the can be safely deleted if you want to however they take up no space so can be left alone.
My advise is to leave them in the recycle bin for a few days just to make sure you have no issues.

A:Single user PC why do I need Admin + Owner + Users ?

I can appreciate your frustration, Russell. The learning curve from XP to 7 can be kinda steep. One of the issues many people first have is the increased security offered by Windows 7. As you said in your post about your XP machines, "They are all standalone PCs -- stable and they let me "in"." That was one of XP's major problems ... lots of malware was able to get in as well as the authorized user(s).

When a new 7 computer is first set up, the initial account created is an administrator account so you can make required changes to the computer (like choosing language of choice, setting computer time zone, etc.) So there always has to be at least one administrator account on a 7 machine.

But to add to the confusion, this is an "unelevated" administrator account. In other words, there are some tasks (such as running a system file checker scan [sfc /scannow] from a command prompt), that cannot be done without jumping through one more hoop. If you open a command prompt in 7 (either by typing cmd in the start menu search box or using the long way start > all programs > accessories > command prompt) you have to right-click the command prompt icon and select "Run as administrator". It's just another security feature to make it more difficult for malware to get in.

A lot of people who are the only ones using the computer leave things as is ... running with that administrator account. Nothing wrong with that if you're careful and know what sites you're visiting, what email attachments you're opening, etc. But for an extra degree of security many people operate as a standard user just because it does make it more difficult for malware to get in. This tutorial goes into more detail about the various account types.

User Account Type - Change

As far as obtaining a Windows 7 installation disk, you could check out Step 4 in this tutorial (doing a repair install of Windows 7.)

Repair Install

You could download the ISO file for your version of Windows 7, save it to desktop, then burn it to a DVD. If you ever did a repair install or a clean install, just use the Product Key on your Toshiba laptop to re-activate with Microsoft. Hope some of this helps and doesn't make things even more confusing.

A:Second hand laptop purchased , change owner name in registry

Click on Start/Run, type in regedit and click OK.
Click on My Computer , in the top left, so that it becomes highlighted (blue).
Click on Edit/Find, type in RegOwner and click on Find next
When found, doubleclick on the RegOwner key and change the name to yours.
Above it you will find RegCompany. Change that to your company or e.g. At Home.
Press F3 for the next occurrence, change it, press F3 etc. until the end.

Repeat this for RegisteredOwner and RegisteredOrganization.

Do NOT change any other name-occurrences, as that may invalidate UserID/Password for other programs. Enjoy what's on it.

Boot with your xp cd [cd set as first boot device in the bios] Choose install from the first menu. The next menu will show any previous xp installs and give you the option to repair the install. Choose your original xp install and let it repair for you.

After a repair install you will need to reinstall all updates, service pack 2, etc.

BTW you cannot just change a mb and expect the system to boot. Sometimes it will and sometimes it will not. If proprietary chipset / mb drivers were installed, it will not boot.

May I know is it possible to show domain user's "Display Name" instead of "User Logon Name" as owner in print queue? Our company's domain using generic "User Logon Name", i.e. 001, 002, 003 and so on, each "User Logon Name" will have personalized "Display Name", e.g. Mary, John etc., but a problem is when a print job printed by a user is hold in the print queue of a network printer, other users won't know who is it (the owner of the print job may shown as 001, 002 etc.) and so not able to ask that user to remove the print job. Any ideas? Thanks a lot!

Hi,

I would like to know if there is any way we can control (or modify)the "change owner to" drop box list in windows for a particular resource (for example say a file) using a vbscript or batch script.

the reason i am asking this is because for usbstor.inf file , i have given ownership access to domain admin group via batch script, but since administrator and my id are appearing in the "change owner to" drop box, i am again able to regain ownership back and then modify the permissions for the usbstor.inf file. I have tried using subinacl for denying the take ownership permission for the administrator group and my id , but even then i am able to take ownership back.
any help to resolve this issue is reallyr really appreciated

Just got a new notebook with Vista Ultimate installed. Under User Accounts it lists "All Users", "Default User" and "Owner". I'd like to change Owner to my name. Is that possible? I tried right-clicking it but Rename isn't an option. The computer was set up in the store I bought it and I suppose that's what they put in. My initial log-in as Administrator did not require a password. I've since changed that and I now log in with my name as an Administrator and using a password. But my name isn't listed as one of the Users. I remember going into the Registry in previous versions of Windows and changing things like this but am reluctant to do so in Vista because I know so little about it.

A:Changing User folder name from "Owner" to me

The best way to do this , is to "Make a new admin account", Ste up your email and make the system settings that you want. Copy all of the data files, favorites and etc from the "Owner" to your New account. After you are sure that you have copied all of your data, delete the old account and files.

I did see that some Registry installer sections for non-MS products have picked up the current Registered Owner, so will contact those companies separately.

In order to get rid of the *.zip folder view in WinExplorer on a64bit WIn7 system I tried to delete (according to some tutorials) the Registry key:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\Classes\CLSID\{E88DCCE0-B7B3-11d1-A9F0-00AA0060FA31}

Unfortuantely this is NOT possible immediately.
When I try to delete it then I got a popup

Cannot delete.... Error while delting key.

Ok, so I tried to get ownership of this key by right clicking-->Permissions
then selecting "Users" and enabling "Full control" the "apply" button but I got here:

Unable to save permission changes on ....
Access denied"

Why?

This last error comes for all Owners: SYSTEM, Administrators, trusted Installers.

I have Admin rights. So what more do I need to get ownership?

Even worse: Every change in owner is rejected as well.

Peter

I have a LAN connected and all sorted out at my house, but i need one thing.

I have the bad habit of leaving Pc's on around the house ( I haven't got all the programs sorted out) and i need something that i can click (Or something similar) to shutdown all the Pc's that are on or single, or disply messages.

I just need something that will give me full control of my LAN. It would be incredibly handy if you could find some Freeware software for this, i would preferably not like to use DOS based programs, as i know how to use them but prefer GUI programs.

Thank you.

Sounds like an overheating video card. Make sure that all the computers fans are working.
Check that any cabling is not blocking air flow through the case. Also check that the power supply fan is running.
If the video card does not have fan purchase an add on fan.

A:owner

Hi bugs461, and welcome to TSG.

Notepad is not an e-mail program that would normally open an e-mail message. It might be used to open certain types of files that are attached to an e-mail message. Are you trying to open attachments to e-mails? A wrong program association in the the email program may be causing the mail software to use Notepad to open a non-text file.

Q: Owner

Good grief:

It's one of those easy "stupid" questions I have. I once saw a Tech Republic letter that gave a simple method of changing the Microsoft IE identification bar. I changed mine to read "Microsoft Internet Explorer provided by Geoff Michael Group". I'd like to change it back to the default but didn't write the change down and now can't recall how I made the change.

Thanks for any help someone is able to share.

New laptop - had about a month. When I got the computer I created my user account and named the laptop right after starting up.

I just opened Properties for the C: drive, and in Security ->Permissions for Users ->Advanced, the current owner is listed as TrustedInstaller, not me.

Obviously I can change it to match the username/computer name I created for this system, but.... is this odd?

I bought a computer from a friend. It had ME on it. I installed XP and everything works great EXCEPT that his user name is everywhere. Even though the user account is under my name, all the documents and settings are still using his name. Another problem is that in IE6 when I click on history, all of the addresses are "[email protected]://blahblah.com". Therefore, they are unknown addresses when clicked on. How can I change these things?

Hello All,
I had "Microsoft Works Suite" installed on my computer by my former employer and it was registered to that company. I have unistalled all of that software, as I no longer work for them. I have since purchased "Microsoft Office 2000 Pro". The problem is ALL of my new "Microsoft Office 2000 Pro" software has my former employer as the "Registered Owner" by default. When installing this software it ask for my name and I entered it, but when I click to open Excell, Word, Outlook, ect... it says my former company is the registered owner on the initial start-up screen. HOW DO I CHANGE THIS TO ME, AS THE REGISTERED OWNER?
Thanks!

Need to ask you a question about laptops!
At Sam's Club today and they had a refurbished
HP Pavilion, dv7-3188cl, Intel Core i5-430M processor, 6GB ram and all the other goodies.
I can pay $475.00
out the door and use it for 90 days but the 1st 30 days I have option of buying extended warranty for 2yrs @$30 or 3yrs for $40
Is this a good buy? I am online with it now and so far everything is working ok. Just need someone with more experience with laptops than I am.
Product # wp586ua#aba

Ran sfc /scannow and everything was good.

What other tests can I or should I do to make sure this laptop is worth the money?
Add today at Frey's $699.00 for same model!

ps. I have a desktop that was refurbished from Costco and not a lick of problems for the 3 years I've owned it.

A:For Laptop Owner's Only

SFC checked the software
I would check the ram
Download memtest86 and test RAM
www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/105647-ram-test-memtest86.html

After your test the ram, take one good stick and test all the slots. You want to be sure no problems.
Test the hard drive, too

Hi, you might well be more successful downloading Win 10 iso (make sure you choose the right one) and using that. You then also can use that subsequently if necessary for an in place upgrade repair install (useful!).

You can find appropriate instructions in the Tutorial section (see above).

Make sure you use disk imaging to image your Win 7 so if anything goes wrong (and it did first time for me) you can restore Win 7 from your image backup.

Aomei Backupper or Macrium Reflect (free) + external storage medium for backup + their boot disk (make sure you create it).

Disk image backups are REALLY useful and allow you to restore your system in a defined time and provide a full backup.

A:Owner/Operator

James,

The problem is not with your computer, but with web designers and software.

There is a multitude of options for "ease of use", but as far as captioning existing websites, it is up to the designers. the ADA is highly active in finding solutions to your issue and others. Some options already exist on your computer. They can be found under your start menu/accessories/accessability.

There are programs that will caption existing DVD or Video. Maybe even some other multimedia. I think streaming video is still underdeveloped.

This link is from a company that has developed captioning software.

This link is from a research paper on disabilities vs. ease of use and what is to be done to overcome them.
http://http://www.otal.umd.edu/uupractice/hearing/#kasday00

Good luck with your search. I hope I have helped in some way.

I bought a used Dell Demension 2400 and (I have installed the storebought version WinXP SP2)and all of the files and downloads are all in the original owners names(even if I am logged on as user and save something) with me and my family as users. I went to My Computer and clicked Properties and then changed name and it brought up a screen that had numbers and letters..I am afraid to do anything past this for fear of loosing all my documents and downloads.

Is there a simple way to delete his name and then replace it with mine without loosing any files? I am thinking he is set up as administrator and I have no idea if this is password protected.

Thanks oodles,

Yes, embarassingly so, I have issues with changng all of my file path names. When I purchased my computer new the business had already installed the OS, etc. So whenever I save ANY document, the crazy file name includes "HP_Owner" to my dismay. I have already tried to do a regedit, yet file names still have the dreaded HP Owner scar. Here's a lovely example: C:\Documents and Settings\HP_Owner\My Documents\article.rtf. See?! Quite maddening to me. So how would I change that so my name appears as author and document owner?

A:What does this owner-pc belong to?

Hello Karizma,

"OWNER-PC" is the computer name of what appears to be a wireless PC or device that is currently connected to your network.

The error you got indicates that you do not have a permission to access this PC or device.

Do you have any PCs or devices that has you used that name for?

Hope this helps for now,

Not sure If it's 32 or 64 bit. I chose 32My sister has had this for sometime. A friend gave it to her and she's never used it or turned it on that I know of. Plugs in and lights up. Won't boot. I try to do diagnostics but it says it failed due to no disk installed. Where can I find a disk? I know this is pretty old but hoping for the best. Or if I continue without hitting escape to go to bootup, it says non-system disk or disk error. It does not have a cd/Dvd drive to it.Any help would be great appreciated

http://www.automation-software.co.uk/, this domain has been deactivated (contains my old favorite for enabling and disabling software Screen Saver Disabler), cuz the owner breeched the regulations and needs to reactivate it. If you (the owner) are in fact here at this site, please reactivate your domain so I can use your software which means mor $$$ for you!

Thanks,
