I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/directdownload.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hi there and welcome to the Vista Forums!

The first thing I would tend to recommend there would be booting from the Vista dvd and going into the repair tools section for the automatic startup repair tool option found there. From the "GRLDR" seen at the top it looks like you had tried out Linux at some point or are seeing some other problem with the boot information.

Hello all I have a neighbor's Dell Inspiron desktop computer with a bootup failure When powered it displays the BIOS screen allowing access to the setup screens as well as the boot device option with arrow Vista cursor Black Screen Windows White In addition pressing the F key does allow access to the expanded options including Safe Mode and the Repair options The System Dell Inspiron Windows Vista Home Premium OS AMD Dual-core processor GB of DDR RAM Single SATA hard drive Single SATA DVD R RW drive When booted in Normal mode the Windows Vista scrolling Windows Vista Black Screen with White cursor arrow bars are displayed briefly before the screen goes black with a white arrow pointer The arrow pointer freely moves about the desktop when directed with the mouse However black screen remains until the time limit is reached for the screen-saver to start At this point the Windows Vista logo displays and the default screensaver application starts The same result is obtained when booting under Safe Mode I have tried other options via the F screen results were the same Last known good configuration Lower video resolution Using the Repair Windows function I was able to bring up the various options Tried a startup repair and indicated everything was fine Tried to restore the computer to an earlier time and was told there were no restoration points to reference I tried Command Prompt and found that I was able to move about the directory tree of the C drive In addition I have tried booting the system from Linux live media and have found that even though the machine is equipped with a DVD drive only iso files burned to CDs will function with this computer Live DVDs do not seem to be readable I do not have the original installation discs for the machine nor any repair discs Wondering if anyone has any ideas of what options to try short of wiping the HD and re-installing another OS Thanks

A:Windows Vista Black Screen with White cursor arrow

Get to the Command Prompt and type chkdsk /R and press enter. Now type a Y for Yes and Reboot the system. Check Disk will start at next bootup and will take a while. It will search for bad sectors and try to repair them as well as fix orphaned files.
You also can press F12 when booting up and do the Dell Diagnostics.

A drained battery led my laptop to shut down unexpectedly yesterday. Since then attempts to boot the computer result in a black screen, white cursor.

The problem replicates when I - [] attempt to boot the computer normally [] attempt to boot in safe mode (w/& w/o cmd prompt) [] attempt to boot to the last good configuration. During the course of this issue, I received a prompt to system restore (which replicated the issue) and I believe that there was a separate system recovery prompt which indicated that I would need to boot from a disk (which I do not have).

I was able to do a bit of research on another computer that I have access to, and from what I discovered, it appears that this issue happens to occur for a number of reasons. If any of you have helpful tips for an individual in my position, I would be highly appreciative.

Hi Anas, does the option "Last known good status" available when starting the computer while pressing F8 key? If so, you can try this option and see if the computer can start normally. If not, let's try the following method:

Step 1: Use the Windows Vista DVD to repair startup
===========
1. Insert the windows Vista DVD and reboot the system.
2. Press the space bar when ?Press any key to boot to CD or DVD? appears
3. When the system comes to the option to install windows, there are two links at the bottom; choose the option ?Repair your computer?
4. The system will locate the Windows Vista installation and show you drive it is located on. If it is not showing, and you have a non-standard SCSI or RAID controller, you will need to load the drivers for it to show. Once it is there, highlight it and click ?Next?.
5. On the menu that appears, click ?Startup repair?. The window will state that it is checking for problems, and prompt you to continue when it finds one to correct. Once it is done, it will prompt you to click finish to reboot. Remove the DVD from the drive and click Finish.

If the issue persists, please perform Step 2.

Step 2: Run System Restore in Windows Recovery Environment
=========
Note 1: Please ensure that the DVD-ROM is the first booting device.

Note 2: If the computer has another operational Operating System, we can save the collected log files to the hard drive partition to which another Operating System is accessible. Otherwise, please insert a floppy disk or connect a USB removable flash disk to the computer. We will collect the log files from another computer.

1. Please insert the Windows Vista DVD and reboot the computer.
2. When we are prompted to press a key to boot from the DVD, please press Enter or the space bar.
3. Click "Next" and click "Repair your computer".
4. Please highlight "Windows Vista" and click "Next".

Note: A computer may store more than one copy of Windows Vista. Please highlight the one which was just installed. The order of the items in the dialog-box is identical with the one on the boot menu.

5. In the dialog-box titled "System Recovery Options", click ?System Restore?.
6. Choose a restore point and try if we can restore to that point successfully.

Hope this helps!Sean Zhu - MSFT

Man this is the second time I ve come across this issue Both times they were top of the line Dell Studio and XPS laptops In the end I resolved the issue by installing Windows but for my own sanity I need to know why Vista won t install I tried installing times and it keeps bringing me to this damn white cursor I tried my trusty Dell OEM disk and even burned a fresh copy of Home Premium at x speed but to no avail The logic just doesn t add up The laptop boots fine from a BartPE disk and as I said with Windows I personally would never install Vista on any of my machines but when it s for a customer they re either going to have to spring for a license in days or not cough update cough if you know what I mean I m one of those people who has to know and THIS is what drives me nuts

I am having issues with my screen turning black and white about 10 seconds after the desktop comes up on startup. I have done a few system restores which seemed to return it to normal colors for a few weeks at a time and then i would have to restore it again. The most recent system restore did not help it at all.

The machine is an HP Slimline running Vista

Graphics Card(?): NVIDIA GeForce 9500 GT

Monitor is a Samsung 226BW

I am not sure if it is my graphics card, vista, my monitor or something else i am over looking.

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks,

Derek

A:Black and White screen using Vista after System Restore

I had the exact same thing happen. It turned out to be the Digital Vibrance setting. Go to your NVidia Control Panel-Display..Adjust desktop color settings.
Somehow, that slider was at 0% instead of the default 50%.
Hope this helps.

Having an issue with a laptop that has Vista installed.  I am getting the dredded black screen with movable white cursor.  There are no system restores available and I cannot start in Safe Mode.  I can start from a recovery disk to access the command prompt

I have seen many people running FRST in this forum for the same issue.  I was wondering if anyone would be able to try and assist me and, if they recommend me attempting to use the FRST program, I can post the results.

A:Cleaned system, but fixing rpcss.dll = Vista Black Screen white cursor

Hi,

You got hit with the latest version of Zekos. One of your system files (rpcss.dll) has been patched.
You'll need more advanced tools to replace that file.

Please follow the instructions in THIS GUIDE starting at Step 6. If you cannot complete a step, skip it and continue.
Once the proper logs are created, then make a NEW TOPIC and post it HERE. Please include a description of your computer issues, what you have done to resolve them, and a link to this topic.
If you can produce at least some of the logs, then please create the new topic and explain what happens when you try to create the log(s) that you couldn't get. If you cannot produce any of the logs, then still post the topic and explain that you followed the Prep. Guide, were unable to create the logs, and describe what happens when you try to create the logs.
It would be helpful if you post a note here once you have completed the steps in the guide and have started your topic in malware removal. Good luck and be patient. If HelpBot replies to your topic, PLEASE follow Step One so it will report your topic to the team members.

Hi,

Been getting the above lately, i think it an old un-resolved issue that i never got to the bottom of.

On start-up, or just after, it crashes, with blue screen, writing for about 2 seconds and then disappears as the pc re-boots.

Any one know where that file is stored? - It must be somewhere?

I think it said something about " a non-paged area"

Thanks in advance

I've a CPU running Vista connected to my TV using a S-Video cable. Yesterday when i booted the PC, the dispay came as Black and White. I mean everything. Not just my profile. I dont know how to get it back to start up in color. I checked the color schemes and they seem to be in color.

Any help to get my display back to color would be appreciated.
Thanks

(a) Try a System Restore.
(b) If you have a spare cable or can borrow one try it to see if the cable is failing.

Hi, I have a desktop computer with windows 7 (Inspiron 545).

When I turn it on the logo of windows loading appears normally but after it I only get a black desktop with a big white cursor (low resolution?) but there is nothing else there, no icons, no task bar, etc. just emptiness. I wish I could give out more details but there is nothing more I can do. I tried with F8 to load recovery and do a factory re-install but the option is not there, even though I know the hard drive has a partition for it, the only thing that it's there is check for errors (or fix errors) but that didn't help. I would do a full format and re-install the operative system but I don't have the original dvd.

Thanks!

My experience helping a neighbor with this problem was that some piece of hardware was not connected properly and the device driver had to time out (over 4 minutes) and then Windows launched properly and he could sign in. We then checked the device manager and saw a problem. Unistalling the problem hardware, plus checking for startup software (using msconfig), and then checking starup services (computer management), and then the startup program in the use profile and the all users profile and deleting stuff that obviously was going to the Internet for updates (e.g. Acrobat) solved the issue.

How long have you waited to actually get a signin screen?

HI Guys,

trust  you are doing good.

I really need your help here.

Actually facing a Black screen with white blinking cursor:

For info , the white cursor keep blinking without loading into windows.

F8 is not even accessible .Also tried to reset my BIOS settings to boot from my HDD first but with no result.

Tried repairing boot issues on start up via a Windows DVD, even tried a system restore, but still no positive boot up.

My issue is similar to this post:

http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/t/487382/windows-7-frozen-black-screen-with-white-blinking-cursor/

I tried generating a FRST Scan log so that you can get a clearer view of what's happening.

Can somebody please help me on that and provide me a fixlist.txt to solve same.

Thank you

I believe what you are trying to do is a "Repair Install". See the link below for detailed instructions on how to do this. How to Perform a Windows XP Repair Install

Hello all,

I have a problem very similar to this thread:

http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/t/487382/windows-7-frozen-black-screen-with-white-blinking-cursor/

On boot the bios posts fine, but after that it immediately goes to a black screen with a white line. I am unable to enter safe mode, and it never moves past this screen. I thought it was a hardware issue, so I cloned the drive onto a completely new drive and it has the same exact issue. So now I have to suspect something is wrong with windows itself.

Prior to this, the computer was working fine, then it shut itself down and on immediate boot up this issue appeared. System restore does not work from the windows 7 DVD, and I've tried startup repair numerous times, as well as chkdsk and sfc scans.

I have posted the FRST log for reference.

Thank you.

Another thing I noticed, is on the black screen if you press CTRL+ALT+DEL the laptop restarts. Not sure if that is helpful.

Hi, just finished a clean install of Windows 7 - everything was working perfectly and after about an hour I restarted my laptop just to make sure all was well. It wasn't. On starting my laptop now I get the usual 'Sony Vaio' screen and then just a black screen with a blinking white cursor like a command prompt.

You can't type anything into this screen and it just stays like that, Windows 7 does not load.

I installed Windows 7 through a USB stick since my CD drive isn't working. I've tried restarting the laptop both with and without the USB but no change. When using the USB I get the Windows 7 install screen again and I can choose 'repair' but it's not finding any problems.

I've also tried resetting my boots order to default (as it started with the USB drive when i was installing) but this hasn't helped either.

Any ideas on how to fix this?

A:Black screen with white dash after first portion of Windows Setup?

Seems that Windows XP installation is not detecting or having problems with your SATA2 drive.

Try going to BIOS and Switching the SATA2 drive out of RAID mode if possible see if that helps.

Windows Xp has issues with SATA2 Drives.

Or you may need to slipstream your copy of Xp with sp2 or 3 if your cd is only SP1 for it to recognize and work with SATA drives. Also with SATA drives I believe Windows XP only recognizes 128GB 137GB SATA drives.

Hi all I am back with yet another problem on my laptop computer Same black Windows blinking 7 cursor white with screen frozen computer as my last problem a HP Pavilion dm - with Windows OS This time the problem that I am experiencing is very similar to this one http www bleepingcomputer com forums t Unfortunately the post that I have linked is no longer applicable to me because the person in that post decided to reinstall his her OS Whenever my computer starts up it is automatically directed to a blank black screen save for a blinking white cursor on the top-middle of the screen The Windows logo animation screen does not even appear it just skips to the aforementioned black screen I have so far waited about hours for something to happen and of course nothing happens I am not redirected to Startup Repair or anywhere else after any reboot I recall that prior to this while I was trying to organise some of my files my computer suddenly decided to Windows 7 frozen black screen with white blinking cursor close all programs and shut down on its own for no conspicuous reason Once again system restore points do not work and I am unable to use Safe Mode or any of its variations because the computer won't let me do so Malwarebytes and Spybot are Windows 7 frozen black screen with white blinking cursor my antivirus programs installed and the solution of reinstalling the OS itself is off-limits to me because I am unwilling to see the extinction of all of my personal stuff

A:Windows 7 frozen black screen with white blinking cursor

I apologise, I just realised that I forgot to note that I am unable to provide a FRST.txt log for the computer this time because I am unable to get into Advanced Boot Options. No matter how quickly and repetitively I tap the F8 key, the black screen always manages to come first. I should also note that the white blinking cursor starts off from the top-left corner, then dashes to the top-middle after about a second passes. So consequently, I am unable to get into System Recovery Options and run any program through Command Prompt.

I still await any possible instructions. Again, I apologise if I sound impatient.

I have HP ProBook 430 G1 with pre-installed Windows 7 Professional 64bit. After clean system installation I have resized Windows partition and created new partition for Ubuntu. I also removed HP_Tools partition. After that (I don't know if it happend before resizing partition) when I start Windows and restart it from Start menu I got black screen with white short strips. I see it for about 10-15 seconds and Windows start normally. It happens after choosing Windows from boot menu but before Windows logo appears.
It only happens after system restart. It doesn't happen when I start system for the first time after turning on computer.
I uploaded photograph of the screen as an attachment.
Anyone has any ideas what causes this problem?

Now, after I was hitting F8 to start safe mode this screen appears everytime - no matter if I start or restart computer.

My name is polskamachina and I would like to welcome you to the Malware Removal Forum. I will be helping you with your malware issues.
What follows below are some ground rules for this forum.
I will reply as soon as possible (typically within 24-48 hours). In turn, I ask that you please respond within 72 hours. If you know you will be away longer than that, please let me know. I am in California at GMT-7 hours (Pacific Standard Time). If I do not respond to you within 48 hours, feel free to send me a private message.
Some points for you to keep in mind:
Do NOT run any tools unless instructed to do so.
We ask you to run different tools in a specific order to ensure the malware is completely removed from your machine. Running any additional tools may detect false positives, interfere with our tools, cause unforeseen damage, or system instability.
Do not attach logs or use code boxes, just copy and paste the text.
I cannot see your computer. Periodically update me on the condition of your computer, and provide as much detail as you can in every post.
Once things seem to be working again, please do not abandon the thread. I will give an "all-clean" message at the very end.
NOTE: Backup any files that cannot be replaced. Removing malware can be unpredictable and this step can save a lot of heartaches if things don't go as planned. You can put them on a CD/DVD, external drive or a flash drive, anywhere except on the computer.
NOTE: It is good practice to copy and paste the instructions into notepad and print them in case it is necessary for you to go offline during the cleanup process. Please remember to copy the entire post so you do not miss any instructions.
In order for me to give you the best assistance possible, I will need to see an English version of the FRST report.
Right-click the FRST64 icon.
Select Rename.
Change the name of the program to either: EnglishFRST64.exe or FRSTEnglish64.exe.
Press the Enter key to accept the name change.
Double-click the newly named icon and the program should start in English.
Check the box for Addition.txt. Note: This option is not available if you're running the program from the Recovery Environment.
Click on the Scan button.
When the scan has completed, copy and paste the FRST.txt and Addition.txt if available into your next reply to me.
Let me know if you have any questions.

Greetings endercase and to BleepingComputer's Virus/Trojan/Spyware/Malware Removal forum. My name is Oh My! and I am here to help you! Now that we are "friends" please call me Gary.If you would allow me to call you by your first name I would prefer to do that.===================================================Ground Rules:First, I would like to inform you that most of us here at Bleeping Computer offer our expert assistance out of the goodness of our hearts. Please try to match our commitment to you with your patience toward us. If this was easy we would never have met. Please do not run any tools or take any steps other than those I will provide for you while we work on your computer together. I need to be certain about the state of your computer in order to provide appropriate and effective steps for you to take. Most often "well intentioned" (and usually panic driven!) independent efforts can make things much worse for both of us. If at any point you would prefer to take your own steps please let me know, I will not be offended. I would be happy to focus on the many others who are waiting in line for assistance. Please perform all steps in the order they are listed in each set of instructions. Some steps may be a bit complicated. If things are not clear, be sure to stop and let me know. We need to work on this together with confidence. Please copy and paste all logs into your post unless directed otherwise. Please do not re-run any programs I suggest. If you encounter problems simply stop and tell me.When you post your reply, use the button instead. In the upper right hand corner of the topic you will see the button. Click on this then choose Immediate E-Mail notification and then Proceed and you will be sent an email once I have posted a response. If you do not reply to your topic after 5 days we assume it has been abandoned and I will close it.When your computer is clean I will alert you of such. I will also provide for you detailed information about how you can combat future infections.I would like to remind you to make no further changes to your computer unless I direct you to do so.Now let's get started ===================================================Now that I am assisting you, you can expect that I will be very responsive to your situation. If you are able, I would request you check this thread at least once per day so that we can try to resolve your issues effectively and efficiently. If you are going to be delayed please be considerate and post that information so that I know you are still with me. Unfortunately, there are many people waiting to be assisted and not enough of us at BleepingComputer to go around. I appreciate your understanding and diligence.Thank you for your patience thus far. I have a Satellite P850/040

I tried to start it up and was taken to the "Windows Error Recovery" screen. I tried both "Launch Startup Repair (recommended)" and "Start Windows Normally" options. Neither worked!

In the "Advanced Boot Options" I have unsuccessfully tried the following options:
Repair Your Computer
Safe Mode
Enable low-resolution video
Last Known Good Configuration (advanced)
Start Windows Normally

Stupidly I have not run a back-up of my files for 6 months & cannot afford to lose some of them.

Does anyone have any suggestions? Or should I send it off to a Toshiba Service Repairer (there is not one available in the town I live in)? Thanks

> Stupidly I have not run a back-up of my files for 6 months & cannot afford to lose some of them.

Two options:

*1)* You would remove the HDD from the notebook, and would use an external 2.5? USB to SATA enclosure in order to connect this HDD to another computer. In such case you should be able to get access to the HDD and to rescue the files.

*2)* You would boot the notebook using Live CD like Linux Live CD or an WindowsPE Live CD. Google for that to get more details.

Hello!

I tried Linux yesterday, and wrote over my previous Windows bootloader files with GRUB.

I later that day (as I could not boot into Windows 7), I deleted the Linux partitions with Windows 7 DVD.

Now, after BIOS I just get a white blinking border on a black screen.

I tried

bootrec /fixmbr
Success
bootrec /fixboot
Success
bootrec /rebuildbdc
Success
bootrec /scanos (Total identified Windows-installs: 0)

I also tried the "automatic" systemrepair (1st choice in the DVD menu, with no luck)

Can someone please help me?

A:Cant boot into Windows - suspect a virus - black screen with white cursor

Gazsa,

typically this is a sign of the computer trying to boot from something other than the hard drive. (In most cases) Double check that all flash drives are disconnected, there there is no cd in the disk player.

Most have already tried this, but I didnt see you mention this, thats why I ask.

Hope this helps

Hi everyone. Yesterday I was working with a laptop of a freind's of mine.
After removing some adwares (with Adware cleaner by bleeping computer) and after disabling some rubbish in msconfig.exe I decided to install an antivirus software on the computer (nothing was on it before).
I chose 360 Total Security. Well, after rebooting the system twice, I noticed a white screen after windows login.
I mena, I turn on the pc. I log in. 10 seconds of white screen. Windows desktop as usual. And the computer works.

Do you think the issue is related to 360 Total Security? Or to other factors? Despite being full of rubbish, that computer never showed a white screen like that. My "disinfection" seemed to have made the situation worse off.
Any suggestion (apart from trying to uninstall 360)?

My parents run Windows Vista on their computer, and I recently got rid of "Antivirus Live" by downloading and running Malwarebytes in safe mode. After that, I installed Comodo AntiVirus and Firewall on their computer. The computer starts up just fine, but many of the icons on the desktop do not load. If you click anywhere on the screen, it turns white.

Hello

I recently encountered an issue where my screen goes white, however I can get into my pc by rebooting several times and occasionally when I turn the screen on or off. I run several anti malware scans by Norton, MS and malware bytes. They all seemed to clean up some stuff but the next day the same thing occured. Some of the things that the scans found were: Strongvault app, Software bundler win32/dealply and trojandropper Win32 Rotbrow.L.
This problem has existed for about 3 weeks now.

Can you pelase help?

thanks

Yes, you've got a few malware entries in there (a CoolWebSearch hijack, and a couple of trojans), though it's not going to be easy to remedy without seeing the complete HJT log. Can you possibly copy the log to floppy and then post it from the other computer?

What's the Windows OS?
eg. Is it Windows 2000 sp4? Or is it WinXP Pro sp2?

What version of HijackThis is it? v1.99.1 is the latest version.
Is HijackThis.exe running from a permanent folder, and not from within a zip file in a Temp folder?
This is important. Make sure HijackThis.exe is installed in eg.
C:\Program Files\HijackThis
Re: your questions at the end of your post:
Don't worry about WINNT / winnt and System32 / system32
They are both exactly the same (whether smallcase or uppercase or a mixture).
svchost.exe is legitimate and is an integral part of Windows NT/2k/XP (Services Host).
It is normal to have multiple instances of it running.

Anyway, try this for now...
If possible, please download the following apps and transfer them to the infected pc.
CWShredder (free standalone version)
http://www.intermute.com/spysubtract/cwshredder_download.html
http://cwshredder.net/bin/CWShredder.exe
AboutBuster
http://www.besttechie.net/forums/index.php?showtopic=1488 (tutorial)
http://www.downloads.subratam.org/AboutBuster.zip

You will need to unzip AboutBuster.zip to a folder on the good pc,
then open AboutBuster.exe
click the Update button
download the updates
then copy the entire AboutBuster folder over to the infected pc.
Download the attached cleanup.zip file.
The zip contains a .bat and a .reg file.
Unzip them and copy the .bat and .reg file over to the infected pc.
Make a copy of them on the desktop and in My Documents.
You could also run them both directly from a floppy.
However, don't run either just yet.
I will tell you what they do and when to use them later in the instructions below.

I have a brand new HP Pavilion with a touch screen. Out of the box I noticed there was a white speck on the screen which I couldn't wipe off. When I turned the screen on the speck appears to be black. The speck returns to white when the screen is on, but displaying something dark. This seems to me to be strange behavior for a dead pixel, but I don't know anything about the new touch screens.  I found a 'dead pixel test' online, and against red and green backgrounds the speck appeared black, while the test would indicate that it should appear white were it so.  I think that the speck seems to be 'above' the rest of the screen slightly. Does anyone know what this is?

Hello,

I am new to this site and in need of some assistance. I am running windows 7 home premium. My video card is an ATI Radeon HD560. i was on my computer the other day and noticed that it started to run slow. I restarted it and worked a bit faster. after about another hour of surfing and running different programs the screen went from color to black and white. i have tried to uninstall the video driver and reinstalled (which exagerated my screen icons and indows) but no changes to the color. i saw soe forums where they suggest replacing the video card. but i dont know if that is the issue. I am also using a samsung tv as a monitor. when i change the tv to tv mode i get color. i can also print in color. please help. any help would be appreciated. thanks.

My Vista profile is now black and white:
Dell Inspiron 1750
Vista Home Premium 32 bit
Nvidia 8200
I turned on my laptop and boot was fine, logon screen and other profiles are fine but when I logon to my profile it is black and white. The desktop, the applications when opened are b/w, everything is b/w. This was literally an overnight occurance. Turned off laptop at night before I went to bed then turned it on when I returned home from work.

I have checked to make sure that my vid card driver was current and it was, I re-installed the driver. I have checked out the desktop properties. I have run my visrus scan twice. I cannot find what is causing this dilemma. Please if you have time throw some suggestions at me.
Thx,
rtflansburgh

A:My Vista profile is now black and white

Hi -

Do you have Vista SP2 installed?

Go directly to NVIDIA for 8200 driver update --> http://www.nvidia.com/Download/index.aspx?lang=en-us

Check Reliability Monitor - see what installations took place prior to B/W -
START | type perfmon /rel

Windows System Restore may be of help here - choose a restore point prior to B/W boot-up -
START | type rstrui

I have a user who asking me to fix his home PC that is running Vista and I am not really familar with it. I am told that when one user clicks their Icon, their desktop comes up in color. But when another user clicks their Icon, the screeen turns to black and white. Had user check appearance settings and both profiles show Vista Basic. Is there a setting that would cause the user to be just black and white?

Thanks!!

On a Windows 2000 desktop, all of the shortcuts (have the little arrow in their corners) have grey shortcut boxes with black arrows rather than the white box with black arrows like is normal. The icons themselves are fine, its the Shortcut part that is wrong.

At boot up the Windows logo has a lot of horizontal lines in the image; the Windows 2000 image on the side of the Start menu also has a lot of lines in it.

Spybot removed 32 items which fixed some of the issues (like the covered min/max/close buttons which we had) but not everything. Has anyone seen these issues? Any fix ideas? I'll run HiJack This next time I connect but I'd like a few more options to try before spending time on this issue...

I recently downloaded some viruses or whatever on to my pc. I'm not very good with computers and my first reaction was to use malwarebytes to remove. It said I had hundreds of Pups and I removed them all. After that it said I needed to restart to apply effects. After the restart, I could login with my password. After that it comes up with a black screen and a little bar on the bottom left. It has an x, a question mark, and a 'wind...'. Upon clicking the wind... A reflection bar goes up and you can select close or move.

My laptop is a few years old and today after I log in I get a black screen with a white cursor. I've read a few threads on forums and have tried taking battery out & pressing on button for 30secs-2mins (tried twice). I can access everything ok in Safe Mode, so did a malware bites scan & registry clean-up. No maleware was found and I restarted but still same black screen appears when logging in normal mode. I've tried to access Advanced tab in BIOS to do hardware test but I don't have that tab. I'm running out of ideas. Please help

A:Black screen with white cursor after log in

B_S2 Hello;Allow me to welcome you to the HP forums!Since it works OK in safe mode, then it's SOMETHING that is being loaded at startup that is trashing the display.  Could be a runtime program; could be drivers, could be a Service. No easy way to tell. Boot into safe mode, enter MSCONFIG in the start area.  When that opens, disable ALL the start items. Reboot. If the PC now works, it's one (or more) of those items -- and you have to go through a tedious process of re-enabling them one at a time until the PC fails again.  The last one you re-enabled was the problem. Here's a tutorial on how to do this: http://www.howtogeek.com/74523/how-to-disable-startup-programs-in-windows/ If the PC still does not run right with all the startup items disabled, then go back into msconfig and select the Services tab.  Check the box to hide the MS services.  Then, disable the upper half of the Services.  Reboot. If problem is fixed, then you have to go through a tedious process of re-enabling one Service at a time until you find the one that is the problem. If the problem is not fixed, then disable the other half of the services.  Repeat as above. No easy way to do this ...Good Luck

I'm running Windows 7.
Last night I installed normal updates.
This morning I try logging in to my computer.
On my user/admin account The screen will either turn black (no pointer), or white (with pointer).
On both safe mode and my Guest account on normal mode, it works perfectly fine.
Login takes a very long time.

I need help...
This is a three month old computer, came with Windows 7.
Working perfectly fine until now.
And I really don't want to pay $50 for support.

Make and model of laptop isfirst itme pholks here need.Have you installed "anything" immediately prior to (before) the problem arrived? Can you get into safe-mode? Press F8 when the system starts up; you may have to press it a few times, even possibly simply press and hold. One thing to try as occasionally it works.Remove all power, battery included. Then press and hold the on/off button for about half a minute or so. This discharges residual power in assorted components. Then restore normal power (battery included) and see if it will boot up ok.Any "beeps" when the system starts up? If so what are they?message edited by trvlr

With windows White Screen Black Cursor x I Black Screen White Cursor have seen many questions answered about this but I feel like I have slight different problem Many of these issues have been solved by downloading or buying a windows recovery disc My problem is obviously from the start up I get the black screen with the blinking cursor Windows shut down on me the other night as it looked to be preparing to download an update and after it did update it went to restart and failed to load windows I cannot press F and get to the recovery menu Now I have a Dell Inspiron R N One thing I have found different from the normal windows recovery disc is that it does not include the option quot Windows Complete PC Restore quot where the quot System Image Recovery quot is I don't think I used this to restore the PC the one time that I did it I believe I used the option at the bottom of the dell recovery partition named quot Dell Backup and Recovery Manager quot But being unable to get into the advance start up options with F I cannot access the Dell recovery manager So I used the windows recovery disc that I burned with my other computer which is not a dell and the options do not work I cannot system restore and when it does work it still wont boot There are no problems with the start up repair The temperatures are normal The diagnostic test available from the boot options menu verified that all my hardware worked properly and even everything says my OS boot up is working properly Also with the regedit command used in the command prompt option I see all my information from my hard drive Also I see and can access folders with files when I try and install drivers when messing with the system image recovery settings so i assume my hard drive is fine Can anyone help me please I've had a ton of issues with laptops before but this one is stumping me I thought maybe download the Dell Backup and Recovery Manager from their site but its for XP and specific products My warranty is up I do not want to open it or bring it to a shop as I believe the problem is fixable Just need some outside information Thank you

It does say that SMART failure is imminent, does this mean my hard drive has failed and need replacement?

Hence, they display as B&W on each others displays

I am running Windows 7. I picked up the FBI virus and thought I removed it with Malwarebytes and CCleaner.
Here's what's happening now.
If I attempt to start Windows normally --- the screen turns black with an active white arrow where the sign in screen should be.
I get the same black screen when I try to enter in safe mode or safe mode with networking.
F8 allows me to access Repair Your Computer.
The startup repair does not detect anything.
When I run a System Restore it gives me an error that I couldn't load C (0x8000ffff)
Anyone have ANY idea how I can fix this issue working with what I have going on?
Thanks!

A:XP: Black screen, white cursor..... Help!!!!

hi Watto, press F2 to enter set up and look in 'Drives' to see if your hard drive is recognised. If it is, then go to F12 and run hard drive diagnostics. You can also go to the website of the hard drive manufacturer and download their own diagnostics which have to be burned to disk as a .iso (not just copied to disk). Now as for retrieving files, you could take the hard drive out of the computer, place it in a usb caddy and attach to a working computer via usb to see if you can retrieve the files. Before trying this however I would see if the drive is recognised in your BIOS. When you got the blue screen you mention did you see any error messages? Be grateful if you could post back to let us know your progress.

So I'm trying to help a person I work with whose computer's been having problems I've come across several problems in the past Black with screen cursor white and always been able to fix whatever software hardware issues I've had So I figured I'd help Her problem however is Black screen with white cursor something I've never seen before and just recently read about First things first she's using Windows Vista Premium -bit edition Her computers problem After boot menu it goes to a black screen with a blinking white cursor She said it was fine one day not the next Some business did something or whatever and it stopped working Whatever the case it's not working now This problem from what I've read is caused by several different things Computer not waking from sleep hibernate mode Software issues or faulty hardware Possibly a issue with the Bios The most likely causing the issue seems to me like it would be software Her Bio's are fine and I reset them to normal Her hard drive is working because it gets to the boot menu at least before failing to enter windows So the most likely choice causing this is software Right I mean that's the only thing I can see causing it I also tried putting her computer into safe mode then realized it didn't even seem to have a safe mode Does that version of windows support safe mode No keys said enter safe mode and the typical F didn't work She doesn't have a windows CD because apparently it never came with her computer when she bought it And she has a lot of files on her computer she needs So at the least I wanted to get on to save those before even considering a reformat But I can't even seem to get to windows not even system recovery Both lead to the black screen with a blinking white cursor that does nothing Anyway any information would be helpful

Dear sir or madam,

I have been having some problems with me dell inspiron 6400, running windows vista.

Recently someone dropped it.

I turned it on, but only a black screen loaded with a white cursor after the green progress bar screen
I then turned it on using safe mode and it loaded fine. I then turned it back on in normal mode and it worked.

However, after doing this process twice, now i am unable to even load safe mode.

I have tried to reinstall factory defaults, but i have been unsuccessful in trying to use both ctrl f11 or f8, (found these form google searching)

Is there any other way to restore factory defaults without the disc on my system, or do you know what might be wrong with it?

Thank you very much in advance.

Shaun Barnes.

Lately I have one problem on my PC.

I use Win Xp SP3 , fresh reinstalled 2 months ago.

But.... randomly its freeze while I am doing something, majorly while playing some games , but also while I am on internet or while I am doing anything other on comp, after he freeze I go for restart, then he shows small white vertical strips all over black screen on start until he comes to windows logo then he freeze again. :S

I tried to go to safe mode and run avast for scan and he shows nothing, but after that I restart and everything is back to normal.

Now this happens few more times..... did anyone had similar problem , pls help .

A:Black screen white strips, pls help :S

when in safe mode is the screen normal? If so, sounds like it could be problem with the graphics driver/card. Is it a separate card or chip on the motherboard. Have you tried updating the driver.

So I was running through westfall on my gnome mage (ALT) and bumped into a much lower level ripper, as usual frost nova and keep running! But my system crashed, couldn't alt + tab or clsoe the program. Rebooted my computer which I have own for approx 5 months and it reads the motherboard fine then goes onto this black screen with a white flashing underscore. IF you leave it long enough it moves to another screen within the bios asking you what state you want to boot windows up in. None of my keyboard buttons work on this page and when the timer runs from 30 to 0 instead of booting up it just crash's...

Once i got a step further and I was on the XP loading screen but it never loaded.

Any ideas? :/

A:Black screen, white underscore...

What are the specs of your computer, could be the power supply, or memory is your system overclocked. When your computer is booting are there any beeps?

Try booting from a XP disc and run recovery console then type chkdsk -r

Hello all,
I'm not sure what went wrong with my pc this morning. It started normally but then went to a black screen. I still have the cursor and I can move it, but everything else is gone.
I don't know all the details of my pc I just know its an older Dell, nothing fancy about it, basic box stock 3yrs ago. I tried unplugging my video card and just using the integrated one, but it does the same thing.
Can anyone help?
Thanks

A:Black Screen, White Cursor

What is the operating system? This is not the correct forum but I need that information to know where to move it.

Hi,

My Windows 7 has stopped working

All I get after the bios starts up is a blank (black) screen and a white cursor.

I do not have a Windows 7 recovery disk and only a Windows Vista one. If I re-intsall Windows Vista I assume I will lose everything off my partition.

Can you tell me if I can fix my Windows 7 installation

If not can you tell me a way of not losing some sentimentally valuable files?

A:black screen white cursor

The files you can recover with this program ( Computer First Aid Using Knoppix ). To diagnose your problem, we would need more info.

A:Black screen white cursor (Help please)

Black screen errors are very difficult to diagnose and fix.  Even more so since it won't get into Windows at any point.
What happens when you tap F8 during startup - can you get into Safe Mode?
If so, backup your stuff from there.

If not, you can slave your hard drive to another computer and copy the data over from there.
You can also backup from the command prompt if you're comfortable working at the command line

Windows doesn't automatically set restore points as they take up a fair amount of hard drive space.
You have to tell it to do it.

I'd suggest that you concentrate on backing up your data.
And once that is done, wipe the hard drive clean and start over with a fresh install of Windows.

Good luck!

After creating a username and password the computer restarted again and after posting went straight to a black screen with a blinking white underscore in the top left. I tried booting from the CD again but when it says "press any key to boot from cd" nothing happens when i push any key on my keyboard. Any suggestions?

---Wow this is frustrating I just got done fixing two other computers- one was helping someone else fix their computer because they were seeking someone with basic expertise and here I am seeking someone with higher knowledge to help me out no screen screen, Windows logon bootup black Vista thanks in advance to all who contribute --- HP Media Windows Vista black screen, no bootup logon screen Center M FWindows Vista bit GB RAM NVIDIA graphics card and plenty of HD spaceF hardware diagnastics A-OK Suddenly this computer decided Windows Vista black screen, no bootup logon screen to malfunction without installing anything new or updates prior to its quot crashing quot I'm pretty wary to spyware and virus of the like so I am careful to what is installed and opened on this computer But for all I know when I was out of the house someone could have accessed the the machine infecting it with something I noticed before I left the house that it took a ridiculously long time to empty out the recycle bin has anyone else had this problem in vista I know there were a lot of high res pictures in there so I'm guessing quite a few gigs of deletion but after an hour it hadn't even progressed It said minutes and appeared to be frozen but was still moving I restarted the computer and tried the same thing-- exact same result lt --- this is the only hint I have as to what happened because before this everything was fine Anyway I got home and turned on the computer after someone turned it off and it just booted up the HP screen and then went to the windows logo loading page except there was no windows logo It displayed the loading bar and moving across the box at the bottom but just with no windows vista logo Then came the blue screen with the moveable mouse pointer I waited hours the mouse pointer still could be moved but the screen was frozen on the light blue hue right before the welcome screen or logon screen I retried this several times with this same result Even CTRL ALT DEL does not work Even more interesting I tried booting in Safe Mode and Safe Mode with Command Prompt both with the same result of black screen with mouse pointer and the text quot Safe Mode quot in all for corners No progression after an hour of waiting Booting windows in quot last known good configuration quot didn't work either There was also a quot repair quot function that precipitated the same results as well The F Recovery Console at the HP boot screen did not work no matter how rhythmic my F pushes were-- not sure why I couldn't recover this system on the recovery partition since HP doesn't send you recovery CDs anymore Lastly I made a Hiren Boot CD followed with my own Windows Vista installer boot CD They both had the same result when booting straight from the cdrom error message on a black screen quot The System memory manager EMM EXE has detected an error caused by a fault in one of the device drivers or programs loaded in the system Due to this fault the system is probably in an unstable state and you are therefore recommended to reboot the computer immediately If the problem persists then try to isolate which program is at fault if you have loaded several then load them one at a atime until the fault appears then contact tech support department for that program Advanced technical information Exception Invalid Opcode DS CB etc etc let me know if you need all the alphanumeric encoding quot When I don't boot straight from the cdrom it freezes and says this quot FD mb System Type- Starting Caldera DR-DOSEMM Copyright etc etc etc lt ---- blinking cursor quot I don't think I'm leaving out much of all but any other inquiries let me know I find this problem extremely odd yet annoying I don't know what else to do this computer is barely a year old Tech support wants or something like for days on one issue even for a recovery cd they want Wow HP Anyways thanks in advance and cheers Nowachi

A:Windows Vista black screen, no bootup logon screen

It may be that someone didn't turn off the PC rather that it experienced a damaging event and shut down.Suggest you check the RAM - remove and reseat and try rebooting. If not successful your mother board may be damaged - nasty thought. There is also this site which may be relevant.http://support.microsoft.com/kb/831515If you can get your PC going suggest you check Event Viewer. Then restore files from the recycle bin and then use SHIFT/DELETE to get rid of them, delete a small file and see if emptying the recycle bin works OKPaul

Older games have a history of having graphical glitches on newer updated machines. This happens all the time and sometimes there isn't anything you can do about it.

If you have administration privileges, right click on the game icon on your desktop or in the folder of the games directory and try running the game in different compatibility modes such as Windows XP.

Hi I have a problem with my computer that started about a month ago The BIOS Black before white underscore screen with computer hadn't been used for about a month Most of the time probably out of boots my screen displays a black screen Black screen with white underscore before BIOS with a white underscore in the top left hand corner before i get to the BIOS This is before any manufacturer logos appear It is the usual flashing underscore which has obviously frozen I have re-seated all hard drives my graphics card removed all cables from my PSU and plugged them all back in again Problem still existed I then unplugged all hard drives and tried to boot and the same problem happened again which rules out HDD failure It's going to be a Black screen with white underscore before BIOS problem with the PSU graphics card or motherboard but i don't know which Before i start replacing parts does anyone have any ideas on what it could be Like i said it doesn't happen with every boot Once the computer is on it works perfectly Putting the computer to sleep rather than shutting down has been working for a while which is how I've still been able to use the PC

I'm sorry for the lack of any technical terms used to describe this but I'm a complete novice with computers.

I was watching a video when some warning messages popped up saying something like harmful stuffs trying to access your computer, then it restarted. Now it starts up, goes to the motherboard thing, goes past that then hits a black screen with a little white line flashing in the top left corner.

I've tried to use F8 to enter the safe mode start up but when I press F8 it comes up with

'PLEASE SELECT BOOT DEVICE

SATA:3M-STM3250318AS
CDROM:3S-TSSTcorp CDDVDW SH-S22'

I tried the SATA option twice, first time the white line vanished so it was just a black screen and then it restarted. Second time it just went back to the screen with the white flashing line.

Any help in sorting this out would be greatly appreciated.
