Icon Labels Not Showing In Control Panel...

Q: Icon Labels Not Showing In Control Panel...

Both Windows Vista and Windows XP have a well-hidden ability to display thumbnail images with no labels This feature is probably Icon Labels Not Control In Panel... Showing most useful in a folder containing just pictures When Icon Labels Not Showing In Control Panel... you invoke it by accident it can definitely make life difficult To display the contents of a folder as thumbnails with no filenames simply hold down a Shift key while switching the folder from Details view to Thumbnails view in XP or to one of the several Icons views in Vista In my experience this action is a bit less responsive in Vista you may have to try several times Icon Labels Not Showing In Control Panel... But clearly it wouldn't be hard to invoke this feature accidentally So how do you get back the filenames First make sure the problem folder is currently set to display in one of the filename-free thumbnail views Now click on some other folder hold down a Icon Labels Not Showing In Control Panel... Shift key and click back on the folder whose filenames you want to recover Here again I found that in Vista I sometimes had to try several times Now that you know how to turn this feature on and off at will perhaps you'll find it's actually useful

Preferred Solution: Icon Labels Not Showing In Control Panel...

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/directdownload.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I installed the JRE6 update 10 Beta and the Java Icon is not showing in the Vista control panel. I have done two clean reinstalls. By clean installs , I mean that I uninstalled JRE each time and made sure it was off my computer before I downloaded and installed it again. I rebooted each time. No matter , The Java Icon is not in the computers control panel. So I cannot get the Java control panel opened because it is not there.

Please help me and thanks in advance

have Skype on windows surface, however sometimes when I answer the camera doesn't turn on but I can hear voice. I believe it might be might be that I have two different versions on this computer because I can answer one pop-up but still see it ringing. restart tablet and call the person from my windows app and it is fine.
here's the catch---why when I go to my control panel can I not find the program? it shows up on my app screen but clicking all relevant selections on the control panel-it is no where? my past experience says maybe I have two versions on the computer or I need to install and reinstall the program with the latest, but unless I go looking for the actual folder it is non-existant.

Hey mate,

I would recommend going to your control panel and uninstalling it completely, only to reinstall the newest version just after. That may very well solve all issues, but let me know if it doesn't

The 'Pen & Touch' and 'Tablet PC' services icons are not showing in the control panel. The tablet items Are checked in Windows features but still not visible. I have tried regediting the 'don't load' portion of the control panel but can't seem to get them to 'stick.' I've tried taking ownership of the control panel folder in the registry but that seems not to help either. Any solid ideas to try will be greatly appreciated.

Go to your BIOS and make sure that your system is set up for PnP. Should be in the advanced settings. While you are there, check to see if the BIOS reconizes the HD.

A:I have a icon in control panel & it does nothing.

Hello Jerry,

Before you do any of the below, be sure to right click on the long number CLSID key in the left pane and click on Export before you delete it. This way if it's not the right one, you will be able to just double click on the exported REG file to restore it.

Once there, look at each long number CLSID key in the left pane under NameSpace until you see one that has nothing entered in the right pane for (Default). If you spot it, then you can just right click on and delete the long number CLSID key for it.

Hope this helps,
Shawn

I recently just tried plugging in an old pair of speakers that i've had for some time, and they worked fine. I then decided that i'd just make sure everything worked fine if i wanted to switch back to my headset, so i went into Control Panel -> Sound and saw both my speakers and headset there. I double clicked on the realtek audio out part that was my speakers, and assumed that selecting the disable option (a drop down box that said "device usage" next to it) would just switch to my headset, since just double clicking on my headset did nothing. Well, now it just completely got rid of the driver from that list and i can't get my speakers to work.

Hi beast,

Go back to Control Panel -> Sound Right click on a device in the list, and select show disabled devices, you can then right click on your disabled device and select enable.

Having Loudspeakers enabled is as you have found out necessary, your headset should also work fine with this setting, so there is no need to swap between the two

I have multiple ethernet connections showing in Network Connections. In addition to my regular Ethernet (came with computer 10/100 card which cannot be upgraded), I have a USB Gigabit adapter which shows as #5. What are the ones in between and can they be removed? I did have to reset my USB adapter once when it lost the network connection. The USB adapter has only been hooked up for three days. We upgraded out internet to 150 Mbps so my old 10/100 card wasn't sufficient, but my computer, an HP p2-1310 doesn't have a slot for an internal network card replacement or add on. We tried a wireless USB adapter but my desk location is apparently in a dead zone in this house - even cell phones don't get a decent signal right here. Relocating the desk is not an option by the way.

I can't explain why but suddenly none of sound drivers including the Windows defaults are showing in the Control Panel for sounds or audio. I've reinstalled the driver for my Delta 44 card three times, ran repair on XP Pro twice and still no show or sound. All drivers are listed as working in Device Manager. I see on the internet that this is not uncommon, but how do you fix it?

A:Sound drivers not showing in XP Control Panel

Hmmmm.. Are you saying the default Sounds and Audio is also missing from Control Panel???? Is your sound otherwise working OK? It's just the stuff missing from Control Panel???

I don't know i have an answer.. but here's some info/things to try
> Note the "drivers" are what you see in Device Manager (so good they're still there!)
> The stuff in Control Panel aren't the drivers.

To try restoring the Control Panel applets try

Also, you should also be able to start the standard Windows Sound and Audio applet by Start->Run, enter: mmsys.cpl then click OK

Hi larryjr88. . .

Welcome to the Tech Support Forum - Vista Support!

I would use CCleaner found HERE. Simply download CCleaner, install, Right-click on the CCleaner icon, Select "Run as Administrator", select "Tools" (left side - center), and a list of installed programs should appear.

Typically, CCleaner lists more installed programs than Windows Uninstall Programs does.

Good Luck to you.

There could be several reasons, ranging from a corrupted file path to the icon for the program, to the program folder being deleted. You didn't state if the program is working or not, but a re-installation of the program should resolve the issue whether it's just a corrupt path to the icon file or a deleted program folder.

Hello Archdeacon, and welcome to Seven Forums.

You can look in the registry at the location below.

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\ControlPanel\NameSpace

Once there, look at each long number CLSID key in the left pane under NameSpace until you see the same TweakUI entry that displays in the Control Panel in the right pane for (Default). If you spot it, then you can just right click on and delete the long number CLSID key for it.

Hope this helps,

Hi,
I loaded a firewall Soft Perfect to be precise, when I uninstalled it left an Icon in the control panel. It has no file extension, no label. I can find the control panel under windows\system32 and under tools, folder options I could delete any other icon but this one does not appear in the list under folder options presumably because it has no file extension - it only appears an orphan image in the control panel display. The only way I can think of deleting it at the moment is to reinstall the software and if it gets an extemsion delete before uninstalling of course that way I might end up with two images. Is there any way of editing the control panel file directly,

Thanks in advance,

Hi,
I read and followed directions in the Threads from a posting on 12/18/07 titled "Control Panel Missing from Start Menu". I tried all of the solutions suggested, but my Control Panel Icon is still missing. I also have the probelm with my Add/Remove programs telling me that I need to contact my administrator. But, I can't tackle that problem without my Control Panel. HELP!!

A:Control Panel Icon Missing

Ok, let's try this Right-Click on the Start Button then click Properties. On the Taskbar and Start Menu Properties Dialog Box click the Start Menu Tab>Customize>Advanced. Under Start Menu Items the Control Panel Display as a link box should be checked.

If this doesn't work, your computer could be infected. In any case keep us informed, if not myself someone else here at TSF can help clear this matter up.

I'm looking for a way to remove the personal and control panel icons from the desktop. I've been able to remove them from the actual desktop, but when I open windows explorer and go to the Desktop, they are still displayed (see image below).
I've tried removing the namespace keys from the registry, but they still appear. Does anybody have a clue how to remove these icons?

Hi, all

This is a very frustrating issue that I'm having. I need to go into Nvidia control panel to change some options but I only am able to mess with sterescopic 3d settings...

this is what it looks like

This seems to be a common issue but every other suggestion online does not fix it for me. I only have 1 monitor (people suggested disconnection dual monitors) I have updated my drivers, I replugged my only monitor, I ended the process and tried again, but still nothing.

Can anyone help me?

A:NVIDIA Control Panel only showing stereoscopic 3d settings

As most people online suggest/say, the problem is not a problem at all. Your computer (Almost 100% sure of it) runs on an integrated graphics card. The card itself handles all the problems so there is no need for any extra options or anything of the sort.

Then again, you can try going into device manager and "restart" your drives. (In other words Enable + Re-enable). If that doesn't work you can reinstall the drives, followed by an update.

I do not know whether it should be like that or not but I find that Control panel >Programs and Features do not list all sizes for my installed apps. For example Office 2007 and many others have no size listed. Is that normal?

A:Control Panel not showing sizes 0f installed programs

Hello Patmos,

Yep, it's normal. If the uninstaller file from that program did not include this information, then it will not be displayed. It was the same in Vista as well. Have to blame the program publisher for this one.

I am struggling to find a solution to this - hopefully someone will be able to help.

Windows 10 recognises two displays - the external monitor and the laptop display. However, under Intel's control panel, it only shows the 'built-in display' in the drop down menu, which is the laptop's display. There should also be the external monitor. Lacking this, I am unable to adjust the gamma and brightness - I've already tried a couple of gamma utilities without success.

I've uninstalled and reinstalled fresh Intel drivers and also the displaylink adaptor which the monitor is plugged into via HDMI.

Would greatly appreciate a solution, even if it means some sort of registry fix.

Thanks

Hello,

I had installed Yahoo messenger a few days ago. I had went into Control Panel shortly after the installation and uninstalled Yahoo Toolbar, which I didn't want. I then decided that I didn't want messenger installed either so went back into Control Panel only to find that it was not listed there. I also noticed that most programs normally found listed in there, such as MSN messenger, NHL07 & Spysweeper just to name a few, are also no longer in Control Panel yet each program works just fine. There are only very few items still remaining in there. And again this happened immediately after uninstalling Yahoo Toolbar. My question is how did this happen, and how can i get Control Panel to list these installed programs again?

Thank you,
Kevin

So I have this extra icon in the control panel and I have no idea why it is there or how to get rid of it.

A:[SOLVED] Extra icon in Control panel

Hi, usually this is a left over from a program that you uninstalled and the "ghost" icon remains. It is harmless yet annoying. Number of ways to be rid of it lets do simple first:-

Click Start, Control Panel and right click on the "ghost Icon" and choose Create Shortcut, you may or may not see this (if not open desktop, icon will be there)

"Windows cannot create a shortcut here.
Do you want the shortcut to be placed on the desktop instead?"
Say Yes.

In the Desktop, right-click the newly created shortcut and choose Properties
Click the Change Icon button. You'll then see the actual CPL(control panel) file name in the resulting dialog.
Using the CPL file name, you should be able to trace the respective application. If that application has already been uninstalled, then you may simply delete the .CPL file. Just right click and select "delete".

If this doesn't work we need to go at it harder Post back.

I've tried Googling my issue with not much success, so here goes: at one point I had a program called Uninstall Tool on my computer which added a shortcut in Control Panel. I have since uninstalled it but the Control Panel icon remains, I would like to remove it. My Googling has so far only come across ways of hiding Control Panel entries, but I would prefer to remove it altogether.

Is there a way of doing this such as searching a particular directory/registry entry of sorts where said entries (or locations of entries) are stored?

Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

A:[SOLVED] Remove a Control Panel icon?

Control panel applets are usually stored in the Windows\System32 folder, and will have a .cpl extension.

Switch to Details View, sort by Type, scroll almost all the way down to the Control Panel item type, see if the tool is listed there.

There may be other related DLLs that were not removed, but removing the .cpl file if present should keep it from appearing in Control Panel.

I use Windows 7. I have uninstalled Java through Control Panel and checked no entries in regedit but the Java icon (Java 32 bit) is still on my Control Panel. When I click on it, it says application not available or something similar.

Can I get rid of this ?

Hi - How do I "re - activate" the internet options icon in the control panel ? thx. -

A:no internet options icon in control panel

Hi

The Internet Options Control Panel Extension is the file called inetcpl.cpl and can be found under C:\Windows\System32.
Check to make sure the file exists.
If the file does not exist you can run System File Checker.
To do this go to Start -> Run -> type sfc /scannow -> ok
SFC usually requires your Windows XP CD. Insert it when requested.
SFC should replace the inetcpl.cpl file as it is one of the protected Windows files.

Note that you could also have a restriction in place that prevents the Internet Options icon from displaying in Control Panel.

Windows XP

I have just installed my Canon PowerShot A40

I am using a USB Port

Everything seems ok except that the Camera Icon in the
Scanners and Cameras Folder in the Control Panel
disappears as soon as I turn off the Camera or disconect
it from the computer

Is this normal? - most Hardware Icons remain permanently
in their Folders

If it is not normal, what might I have done wrong?

Thanks

I just installed Win7 ultimate, and it works great. I went into the control panel to change the power settings, and I realized that the control panel is missing the icon for "all control panel items". I unlocked the built in administrator account and tried it that way, but the item is still missing. everything else seems to work perfectly. Any ideas?

I've just looked through my control panel icons and I don't have it either. I'm not sure what you mean.

Please see the attached pic.

I have uninstalled Avira weeks ago and only just now noticed it's blank icon is still present in the control panel when using "small" icon view.

When I click it, Windows tells me "application not found", is there a way to remove it from the list?

I have Window XP operating system and can no longer access the control panel. The icon is no longer available on my Start Menu. There is an icon called Set Program Access and Defaults and when I click on it it tells me "This operation has been canceled due to restrictions in effect on this computer. Please contact your system administrator". This is a private home computer, not on a system. Though I am a regular computer user I have few technical skills and may have entered an incorrect command. Can anyone tell me how to correct this problem?

You can either move to a temporary location (safer) or delete (up to you) the associated .cpl file in \windows\system32

A:need control panel icon on desktop or start menu

Right-click on the Start button > Properties > Customize > Advanced, in "Start menu items" for Control Panel click "Display as a link" or "Display as a menu".

I prefer "Display as a menu".
